Collett, Edward. "Strategies of auditory categorisation in cochlear implant users and normal hearing listeners". Thesis, Toulouse 3, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016TOU30169/document.
Auditory categorisation is a process essential for coping with the large amount of sounds encountered in the real world. However it is affected by the use of a cochlear implant (CI) deviee. Whilst CI users may attain high levels of speech performance,ad their ability to perceive other kinds of sounds is impaired in comparison to Normal Hearing Listeners (NHL). The current project therefore proposes a new approach, looking at the perception of sounds at the leve!of categories rather than individual sounds. In the first study CI users and NHL were tested to see how accurately they categorised a series of vocal, environmental and musical sounds. Results showed that CI users with the longest duration of implantation and therefore of listening experience demonstrated results more similar to those ofNHL. A second study involving oniy vocal sounds showed that information pertaining to the emotion and age of a speaker was used to categorise different speakers and that gender was not strongly perceived. A third study looked at how different environmental sounds were categorised and whether or not the auditory context (i.e. location) was helpful to the categorisation and identification of vocoded sounds. Although context information did not appear to aid listeners the results showed the robustness of certain information regarding the perception of the sound producing action and material, even when listeners could not identify sounds. The research domain of auditory categorisation is not as large as that for the visual domain and subsequent!y this project is important for the further understanding of how sounds are categorised and what categories are commoniy used by listeners. For example the perception of the sound producing action and material as weil as results that show categories of sounds corresponding to hnman vocalisations, hnman actions, nature, mechanical and musical sounds, which agrees with previously conducted studies Concerning the results of CI users it appears that experienced listeners may have fewer problems perceiving auditory categories as compared to identifying individual sounds. This is the first study to test CI users in a free-sorting task and in addition to the few studies that have also tested CI users auditory categorisation suggests that categorical perception may be a useful way in which to test and rehabilitate CI users to different kinds of sounds

For decades, the police investigation has been a hegemonic phase of criminal procedure. Today, it supplants the judicial investigation by allowing investigators to carry out numerous investigative acts. In the same time, the rights of defendants and victims are incomparably less developed in the police investigation phase than in the judicial investigation. In this context, the claim to introduce more adversariality in the police investigation has emerged. In the police investigation, the adversarial process implies being able to access the acts carried out by the police officers and the documents they have collected, which are gathered in the case file. With this information, the suspect and the victim would be able to make observations to the public prosecutor and discuss the course of the investigation. However, too much increase in the rights of the parties to the investigation could undermine his effectiveness. There is a risk that the time spent talking to the suspect or the victim will slow down the procedure, but above all, the strategies deployed by the investigators sometimes involve maintaining an element of surprise, which would be impossible if a permanent right of access to the file was granted. In recent years, the legislator has created “windows of adversariality” in the police investigation. However, they are subject to particularly restrictive opening conditions and theprovisions in question therefore have difficulty being effectively applied. Based on a study of contemporary manifestations of the adversarial principle in investigations and related practices, it is possible to determine what degree of adversariality can be introduced in investigations without hindering the search for offences and their perpetrators

Eyewitness testimony is a fundamental determinant to the resolution of criminal investigations. To conduct criminal investigations effectively, it appears essential to obtain complete and accurate testimony. For this purpose, a research team has developed a method based on the features of human memory, aiming to enhance the eliciting of eyewitness accounts: the cognitive interview (Geiselman et al., 1984). Although this method enables investigators to obtain detailed descriptions without reducing the quality of the testimony, it is still only marginally used by legal professionals. The objective of this thesis is twofold: it aims to provide interviewing instructions which take into account the psychological processes at work in the recalling of events in episodic memory, while simultaneously being acceptable from the standpoint of professional practice. The first step involved conducting an analysis of professional practices. An evaluation of training in cognitive interviewing by police investigators showed that the method is easily learnt and suggests that the lack of implementation in practice does not stem from the difficulties linked to its implementation, but rather arises as a result of a lack of acceptance among professionals. In order to further our understanding of the professional objectives of the hearing, we then conducted an analysis of practices in terms of hearing. This analysis revealed that investigators were essentially seeking out information about the actions which took place during the crime scene. Based on these findings, we designed a re-enactment-alike interviewing instruction, which activates the verbatim traces in memory and is intended to elicit the general and specific actions of a scene. This instruction was tested in an interviewing protocol and demonstrated its quantitative and qualitative effectiveness in providing a greater quantity of correct information compared with other instructions, whilst withstanding a concomitant increase in the number of errors. Re-enactment-alike instruction thus appears highly relevant for reaching the main objective of a police investigation

Attention is a basic neuropsychological function subjacent to all cognitive processes. It can be defined as the ability of one to select and focus its mental processes in either inner or outer aspect, responding specially to meaningful stimulus or inhibiting the answer to other ones. Given that in many years of clinical work it has been observed that patients, especially children, have complained about their school performance without any auditory alteration, attention has been considered as very significant. Hearing loss compromises the regular development of a child since sensorial privation can alter several auditory abilities including attention. Thus, this study aims to compare children performance in Sustained Auditory Attention Ability Test SAAAT (FENIMAN, 2004), on the various ways of application (with earphones in free field), on the gender, application sequence aiming to assess this important ability in children using AASI and IC and on those who do not accept ear phones to perform the test in a standard way. 40 children, with 7 years old were divided into two groups: G1- and G2 with 20 children each. The SAAAT in G1 was applied firstly with wear phones and later in free field; in G2 the process was inverted. The evaluation process consisted of one specific questionnaire, a battery of auditory tests including tonal audiometry and audiometry in free field and SAAAT application. Results showed there was no significant difference in gender compared to the other groups for THAAS with earphones. G1 had statistically significant performance for inattention mistakes and total of errors (p=0.021615 e p=0.013393 respectively); When compared the groups in field, G2 had statistically significant performance just for vigilance decrease (p=0.021615); comparing the earphone and campo G1 had significant performance regarding inattention and vigilance decrease (p=0.020526) and in the same comparison with G2the difference was statistically significant for impulsivity mistakes (p=0.000174). Therefore, the difference observed between the two ways of application on the groups was due to the sequence of application, how it was applied on the first and second times. It was the determining factor to the performance given the learning effect of the test. This research showed the application of THAAS in free field is viable for cases which the standard application with earphones is not possible with the same normative values used for the standard way of assessment.
