Abstract (sommario):

This paper presents and evaluates the Brentanian theory of association of ideas. The topic of association usually brings to mind British Empiricism, which is often thought to have a monopoly on the matter. Brentano, however, adopts an original, alternative account of association. He argues that all cases of association can be placed under a single general law, that of “habit”. His explicit account of the topic is rather brief; however, his most faithful pupil, Anton Marty, thoroughly developed his master’s views. Marty presents Brentano’s account of association in detail, and endeavours to defend it against rival theories, notably those which hold that the laws of “similarity”, or of what is called “redintegration”, are able to explain all cases of association. First, the paper presents the information found in Brentano himself on association of ideas. Then, it turns to Marty to analyze his developments of the Brentanian view. Finally, the paper evaluates Brentano and Marty’s account by tackling some objections that it may face.

The Austrian Alpine Association created the brand of Mountaineering Villages to promote a sustainable development of tourism and protect the entire mountain range. The idea of the Mountaineering Villages is the result of the cooperation of alpine associations with local tourist organisations and communities, with hoteliers and committed members of the population. In its policy, the initiative Mountaineering Villages outlines ideas about the ideal guest. It connects the tourists through publications, forms, structures and everyday practices to the villages. The article asks how this relationship develops and what ideas about the guests are created.

In seven paragraphs written in 1893, Peirce puts forward a puzzling and thought-provoking claim about the role of rather mysterious “skeleton-sets” in processes of association of ideas: all association of ideas, either by resemblance or by contiguity, requires and involves “skeleton sets”, whose iconic dimension is necessary for these processes to take place. Because it relates to the question of the nature and mode of the existence of ideas, to that of the role of icons in thought, and to that of the content of concepts, this thesis is clearly of great importance for Peirce’s philosophical system. In this paper, I would like to examine two questions: (1) what is the justification of Peirce’s claim that “skeleton-sets”, or “skeleton ideas”, are necessary for an association of ideas – by resemblance or by contiguity – to take place in one’s mind? (2) Is this claim compatible with Peirce’s philosophical system?

This research makes use of a cognitive study to explore a mechanism for associating ideas during brainstorming. First, we propose a linking model that integrates three principles of idea association (similarity, contrast and contiguity) with two processes of case-based reasoning (retrieval and adaptation). Then, a design experiment and its protocol analysis are conducted in order to identify the types and mechanisms of linkages between ideas and cases, and to explore a computational mechanism for this linking model. Finally, a framework for case-based reasoning to support idea association called Dynamic Idea-Maps (DIM) is proposed, and its mechanism is elucidated.

In the 1920s, the Surya Karta and Bali Adnyana Associations emerged in Bali. They represented modern versus traditional as outlined in the articles summarized in Surya Kanta and Bali Adnyana newspaper. The two did not reach common ground, so they continue to color the dynamics of Bali's history to this day. This study aims to find a meeting point for the teachings of the two associations as valuable lessons to build peace in Balinese society. This study was conducted through a literature study pertinent to the research topic and also used a social history approach model that was developed with a critical theory perspective as loved by those who pursue Cultural Studies. The object of the study is Surya Kanta and Bali Adnyana Association and the main data presented in this article is mostly taken from a book entitled Reform towards Perfect and Holistic Progress Surya Kanta Association's Ideas about Bali in the Future. The study shows that the ideas and actions of the Surya Kanta association are fundamental because they can function as moral schools for the Balinese today. The ideas expressed in their newspaper are very interesting from a cultural point of view. The conflict between Surya Kanta and Bali Adnyana is also related to caste in Bali, which continues today. If the Balinese could use this event as a moral school, then the Balinese would certainly not continuously keep repeating the same mistakes. Because we do not want to learn from history, the conflict between the nations continues.

It has long been claimed and supposedly substantiated that there exists an association of ideas, but not of perceptions (that is, sensations or impressions). Collingwood echoed this claim from Hume, but Hume later in the Treatise produced an association of impressions (actually emotions and passions), so he came close to Hobbes’s position: human physiology has “trains of sense” and these are carried on in human thought—what we call “ideas” (he called “decaying sense”). A strong case can be made for this claim when we examine the phenomenon of food. Concerning food, I explore Chinese cuisine and more recently Kunz and Kaminsky’s The Elements of Taste for examples that provide substantiation of the association of perceptions. This proves to be a rewarding way to look at the phenomenon of food and leads us to re-examine traditional theories of perception.

The study of associations from the perspective of psycholinguistics contributes to the comprehensive description of thinking and the types of its expression. This can be made possible through the classification of the word associations presented by the participants in the course of a psycholinguistic experiment and its analysis. As a result, it becomes clear that the type of word associations is directly linked with the perception of words and the individual nature of their application. The latter is determined by both linguistic and extralinguistic factors. Associations are the important links between ideas or between sensations that ensure the categorization of linguistic consciousness.

The article deals with the perceptions of the family of young followers of The Moscow Church of Christ. It examines the process of religious socialization, the relationship between parents and young followers of a religious association, and ideas of the ideal family and divorce. The study finds that children from single-parent families are more likely to become members of a religious association, while children who grew up in a religious association are less interested in starting a future family. Ideal family relationships are based on the “biblical” model, which affirms the primary role of the father as the head of the family. The importance of the institution of “family” mentoring as a factor in strengthening family relationships was noted. The interchangeability of the kinship and spiritual understanding of “family” in the rhetoric of the respondents was revealed. The research is based on field material collected in 2018–2019 in Moscow.

Abstract (sommario):

ABSTRACT The aim of the research is to discover the pedagogical and cultural ideas of baron М. О. Korf and their impact on the modern monitoring of quality of education. The pedagogical ideas of baron М. О. Korf refering to the problem of monitoring of quality of education are exposed in the article. In fact he was the first person in Ukraine and Russia who started verification of knowledge of peasants and students. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, system-formation, scientific character, verification, the author’s objectivity, moderated narrative constructivism, and the use of general scientific (analysis, synthesis, generalization) and specially pedagogical (empiric, historical comparative) methods. The scientific novelty of the article consists in the fact that for the first time in history of pedagogics it was found out on the basis of works of Mykola Korf and publications of researchers of his inheritance that a teacher tested the knowledge of peasants and students of elementary school and then made a report. A question for conversation was divided into two categories: those which analytically name an object and offer child to define the sign and the ones that enumerate signs synthetically, not naming an object, and offer to thinking of child to recreate an object according to its signs. Nowadays there is the idea that the founder of the world monitoring of quality of education is the American association of Progressive Education Association in the of United States. However, we prove that Mykola Korf measured the quality of knowledge of students, conducted monitoring of quality of knowledge, considerably before associations. Conclusions the results of research allow to assert that the pedagogical ideas of baron M. O. Korf can be considered as basic developments of modern theory and practices of monitoring of quality of education because he organized the research before American association of Progressive Education Association in the of United States. Key words: monitoring, knowledge, methodology, conversation, pedagogical ideas.

Attributes of communities have long been considered a major influence on people’s self-organized governing behavior (Ostrom 2005). Does Confucianism, a widely shared set of traditional ideas, inform Chinese homeowners in governing their neighborhoods? Based on in-depth interviews with 27 homeowner association (HOA) organizers from 16 neighborhoods in Beijing, we found evidence suggesting that their governing behaviors were informed by traditional Confucian conceptual distinctions and normative expectations: Stringent expectations were found on HOA organizers to serve with purely “public” motives and renounce “private” ones; neighborhood management, meanwhile, was not merely considered as a means for improving living conditions, but a patriotic act of serving the country. Arguably, these meanings corresponded to the Confucian ideal of junzi and its guide to moral cultivation. They helped sustain homeowners’ participation and promote a social norm that maintained accountability for their behaviors. The findings suggest further research on neighborhood governance, and contribute to the reforming governance of contemporary China.

This special issue on membership associations publishes eight articles from a variety of disciplines that illustrate the continuing advancement of scholarship related to member-based nonprofit organizations. Each addresses one or more enduring questions about the existence and influence of associational activity. The articles are ordered according to the level of analysis from the cognitive/intrapersonal to the systemic/societal. Taken together, they demonstrate the scholarly and practical value of explicitly addressing membership dynamics and associational structures within the broad field of nonprofit studies. They also suggest important areas for future study. After introducing the special issue and articles, to further build understanding of membership association dynamics, we review recent publications that complement the issue and offer ideas for additional research.

AbstractAlthough yodelling has been a part of English-language popular music since the early decades of the 19th century, it lacks prestige in contemporary popular music. This essay charts the change in the yodel's fortunes from its use in the early 19th century as a signifier for ideas relating to a pastoral Golden Age to its present-day association with hillbillies and comic stereotypes. It examines the contexts in which yodelling was most frequently heard in order to elucidate its primary associations and connotations. By examining the changing attitudes towards the ideas associated with yodelling, the essay analyses the gradual decline in the prestige of the yodelled voice.

The article investigates semantic forms of the association field ‘German’ in the linguistic consciousness of Russian students. It systematises Russian stereotypical ideas of Germans through a word association experiment. Five thematic areas of the semantic form ‘German’ are described. Both direct (from stimulus to response) and inverse (from response to stimulus) test items probing the associative field ‘German’ were analysed. The results indicate how stable stereotypical ideas of Germans are in the consciousness of today’s Russian students.

Abstract (sommario):

The test of association of words and ideas proposed by Kent and Rosanoff, may be designed as a creative technique to study the mental operations selected by a population. This test has been carried out with two groups of Greek pupils in order to study the gap of the interpretations proposed from the term "watch", an object that is not found only in school, but that reminds to the rhythm of school life and by extension, to the employment of time regulating daily life. The test of association of words and ideas is of interest if one examines, on the one hand, the total of connotations produced by the students and if one compares, on the other hand, the statements of the two groups in relation to their level of studies and to their ability to combine unexpected ideas. The study of connotation for the study of the mechanism of the association of words and ideas from the inducing object of the watch can be used to draw conclusions on the type of mental operations carried out by the two groups of participants in distinguished social and personal areas. Finally, the scope of the interpretation of the inducing object suggested always remains open. Thus, the territory of the associated ideas remains unconquered and reveals the psychology and the inventiveness of the participants.

Technological developments have triggered changes in the way we carry out economic activities. This change is closely related to ideas, creativity, innovation and speed that most of our farmers fail to understand and follow. As a result, farmers always get the smallest profit and are left behind in the economic chain. This study aims to find out and describe how the Bendungan Village Farmers Association provides counseling on the development of agricultural technology in Bendungan Village, to find out and describe how farmers respond to ideas and innovate to increase their agricultural yields and to find out and describe the obstacles the Bendungan Village Farmers Group Association has in improving The Economy of the Bendungan Village Community. This study used a descriptive qualitative method involving the Association of Farmers’ Group Management and Members of the Farmers’ Group in Bendungan Village. The data collected is then analyzed and reduced so that it can be presented in descriptive paragraphs. This study found the following results: 1) Bendungan Village Gapoktan used 3 counseling methods, namely scheduled counseling and incidental counseling. 2) Not all Farmer Groups and their members are ready and follow the ideas and innovations initiated by Gapoktan through counseling. 3) The Combined Farmers Group experienced difficulties in conveying (communicating) their ideas and ideas to stakeholders and farmers in Bendungan Village.

This article examines the isomorphic connections between the scientific and political ideas of William Lovett and the National Association for the Political and Social Improvement of the People. It demonstrates that, far from being a mere coincidental device, distinct from his politics, Lovett's scientific ideas helped shape the internal structure of his political radicalism. The same was also true of the National Association more generally. Concepts and assumptions derived from phrenology and physiology served the heuristic function of stimulating the construction of analogous systems which directed and conditioned the version of political radicalism which Lovett and the National Association propagated. This suggests that in the mid-nineteenth century the importance of the organic sciences was more politically subtle than previously thought and that a reconciliation of the ideas of George Combe with political radicalism was possible. This insight is compatible with recent historiographical trends, and opens up new vistas for the study of science in radicalism.

Because it arose from a coalition of pre-war societies and associations it provides a valuable historical link, as well as an example of a later alliance with progressive ideas in education. The paper considers the following questions: What were the historical roots of MEUT? Why was MEUT formed? What new ideas were developed and debated, and how did these relate to traditional concerns? What accounted for the demise of MEUT? Through the investigation of such an association we can better understand how music as a curriculum subject changes over time.

Thermodynamics, and in particular entropy, has been found to be challenging for students, not least due to its abstract character. Comparisons with more familiar and concrete domains, by means of analogy and metaphor, are commonly used in thermodynamics teaching, in particular the metaphor ‘entropy is disorder’. However, this particular metaphor has met major criticism. In the present study, students (N= 73) answered a questionnaire before and after a course on chemical thermodynamics. They were asked to: (1) explain what entropy is; (2) list other scientific concepts that they relate to entropy; (3) after the course, describe how it had influenced their understanding. The disorder metaphor dominated students' responses, although in a more reflective manner after the course. The view of entropy as the freedom for particles to move became more frequent. Most students used particle interaction approaches to entropy, which indicates an association to the chemistry tradition. The chemistry identification was further illustrated by enthalpy and Gibbs free energy being the concepts most often mentioned as connected to entropy. The use of these two terms was particularly pronounced among students at the Chemical Engineering programme. Intriguingly, no correlation was found between the qualitative ideas of entropy and the results of the written exam, primarily focusing on quantitative problem solving. As an educational implication, we recommend that students are introduced to a range of different ways to interpret the complex concept entropy, rather than the use of a single metaphor.

AbstractMuch of the written evidence for Greco-Roman associations provides information about meeting frequency, group activities, venues for gathering, and membership requirements. At the same time, many inscriptions and papyri also contain short narratives that directly contribute to the common identity of the association. These narrative elements often take the form of a vision, a dream, or an oracle that a patron receives that encourages him or her to found the association or direct its practices in some way. I suggest in this article that many of Paul's audiences would have received his story about encountering the risen Christ as rather commonplace given the frequency of these similar claims among voluntary associations. In other words, the article explores how Paul's (mainly non-Judean) audiences would have slotted his claims into their cultural repertoire of ideas, especially if they considered his Christ group to be just like the many other associations with which they were already familiar. Association inscriptions offer an important collection of examples that can be analyzed alongside Paul's claim to have seen the risen Christ.

AbstractThis article explores the ideas of “Walking” John Stewart (1747–1822), a little-known adventurer and philosopher active in debates over social reformation during the French Revolutionary period. Renowned as a peripatetic who walked from India to Britain, Stewart befriended Thomas Paine and others during the early years of the Revolution. His main aim was to persuade them of the value of his philosophy, which was derived from French materialism as well as Hindu and Buddhist sources. But Stewart also came under the influence of the Shakers, Dunkers, Moravians, and other North American sectarian communities. As early as 1791 he commended small-scale “cohabitations” of no more than 100 men and 100 women as the ideal form of association. Here, and in his radical approaches to marriage and sexual relationships, he strikingly anticipated the ideas of Robert Owen and the early socialists.

In this paper I attempt to review critically the historical thought of Isaria Kimambo through time by examining a selected number of his publications and manuscripts. The paper also incorporates comments from his peers and colleagues, as well as his own assessment. In conclusion, the paper appeals to historical institutions and organizations in the developing world (including the Department of History, University of Dar es Salaam and the Historical Association of Tanzania) to cultivate a culture of awarding outstanding historians for the purpose of promoting creativity, commitment, and devotion to the discipline.Isaria Ndelahiyosa Kimambo turned 72 years of age in 2003, For half his lifetime Kimambo has served the Department of History of University Dar es Salaam and the Historical Association of Tanzania (HAT). Established in 1964, the Department of History is one of the oldest departments in the University, which started in 1961 as a college of the University of London. In 1963 this became the college of the University of East Africa, based at Makerere, Uganda, and in 1970 it became a full-fledged University. HAT, which became a non-governmental organization in 2000, was born in 1966, with Kimambo as one of the founding members.Kimambo joined the Department of History in 1965, when he was in his third year of doctoral studies at Northwestern University. In 1967 he successfully defended his dissertation entitled “The Political History of the Pare People to 1900,” which was based on research he conducted in Upare in northeastern Tanzania. In 1969 he became the Head of History Department, the first indigenous Head, taking over from Terence O. Ranger, who left the Department and joined the University of California at Los Angeles as Director of African Studies.

In addition to analyzing in detail the arguments of these texts and their relations to the received tradition, it also provides a useful introductory survey of the current state of the study of Chu-script bamboo-slip texts, facilitates direct confrontation with these texts for anyone who desires to pursue them, demonstrates—in association with her earlier monographs—how newly discovered texts have transformed our understanding of early China, offers insights into the origins and deep structure of the Chinese modeling of history as a dynastic cycle/sequence, and shows how working across generic boundaries both improves our understanding of ancient China, and allows more insightful comparisons with other early civilizations.

No philistine, Thorstein Veblen thought humankind's innate impulse to imbue experience with aesthetic unity advanced all knowledge, and that the most beautiful objects, ideas, and actions met a standard of communal benefit reflecting humanity's naturally selected sociability. Though German idealism was an early influence, it clashed with Veblen's historicist critique of Western institutions, and it was William James's psychology that refined his ideas into a coherent aesthetics with ethical and political applications, by clarifying how instinct, habit, and environment could interact to institutionalize standards of beauty subverting the native altruism of the aesthetic impulse. Over years of association with John Dewey, Veblen concluded that a redeemed and reflective will to behold and create beauty in and through selfless activity could advance a more efficient and egalitarian society, and that humans cooperatively shaping their environments for the common good could approximate the German tradition's ideal of harmonizing personal freedom and external reality.
