Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents and evaluates the Brentanian theory of association of ideas. The topic of association usually brings to mind British Empiricism, which is often thought to have a monopoly on the matter. Brentano, however, adopts an original, alternative account of association. He argues that all cases of association can be placed under a single general law, that of “habit”. His explicit account of the topic is rather brief; however, his most faithful pupil, Anton Marty, thoroughly developed his master’s views. Marty presents Brentano’s account of association in detail, and endeavours to defend it against rival theories, notably those which hold that the laws of “similarity”, or of what is called “redintegration”, are able to explain all cases of association. First, the paper presents the information found in Brentano himself on association of ideas. Then, it turns to Marty to analyze his developments of the Brentanian view. Finally, the paper evaluates Brentano and Marty’s account by tackling some objections that it may face.

Abstract (sommario):
The Austrian Alpine Association created the brand of Mountaineering Villages to promote a sustainable development of tourism and protect the entire mountain range. The idea of the Mountaineering Villages is the result of the cooperation of alpine associations with local tourist organisations and communities, with hoteliers and committed members of the population. In its policy, the initiative Mountaineering Villages outlines ideas about the ideal guest. It connects the tourists through publications, forms, structures and everyday practices to the villages. The article asks how this relationship develops and what ideas about the guests are created.

Abstract (sommario):
In seven paragraphs written in 1893, Peirce puts forward a puzzling and thought-provoking claim about the role of rather mysterious “skeleton-sets” in processes of association of ideas: all association of ideas, either by resemblance or by contiguity, requires and involves “skeleton sets”, whose iconic dimension is necessary for these processes to take place. Because it relates to the question of the nature and mode of the existence of ideas, to that of the role of icons in thought, and to that of the content of concepts, this thesis is clearly of great importance for Peirce’s philosophical system. In this paper, I would like to examine two questions: (1) what is the justification of Peirce’s claim that “skeleton-sets”, or “skeleton ideas”, are necessary for an association of ideas – by resemblance or by contiguity – to take place in one’s mind? (2) Is this claim compatible with Peirce’s philosophical system?

Abstract (sommario):
This research makes use of a cognitive study to explore a mechanism for associating ideas during brainstorming. First, we propose a linking model that integrates three principles of idea association (similarity, contrast and contiguity) with two processes of case-based reasoning (retrieval and adaptation). Then, a design experiment and its protocol analysis are conducted in order to identify the types and mechanisms of linkages between ideas and cases, and to explore a computational mechanism for this linking model. Finally, a framework for case-based reasoning to support idea association called Dynamic Idea-Maps (DIM) is proposed, and its mechanism is elucidated.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In this dissertation an attempt was made to uncover the source of verbal associations. The investigation focused on establishing the locus of representation for associative relationships in the cognitive system and whether this locus is different from that for semantic relationships. A picture naming task and an object decision task were used within the standard priming paradigm, in which the target is preceded by a prime. A dual-level model was proposed in which associative relatedness is represented at a lemma level that connects the lexical form representation of a word to its semantic information. According to this model an interaction between associative and categorical relatedness should occur in picture naming, but not in object decision, when primes and targets share both relationships, and this is what was observed. To investigate the mechanisms of associative priming, asymmetrically associated prime-target pairs were used to create two situations. In the forward priming condition the target was an associate of the prime (e.g., brick-house), and in the backward priming condition the prime was an associate of the target (e.g., babyrattle). Unexpectedly, facilitation was observed for backward priming at the short SOA in picture naming. Because no effect was observed for this condition in the object decision task, and given that forward priming produced facilitation in both tasks spreading activation was upheld as the mechanism for associative priming. In order to investigate whether the source of the relationship between associates might be in their latent semantic content, the impact of instrument relationships (e.g., grinder-coffee), script relationships (e.g., zoo-tiger), and proximity in multidimensional semantic space were also investigated in the picture naming task. Items that were close in semantic space, but did not share any semantic relationships, produced the same priming pattern as category co-ordinates in picture naming (i.e., interference), while instrumental and script relationships did not produce a priming pattern that matched either that observed for associative or categorical relatedness. These results were taken to indicate that the source of associative relationships is in the co-occurrence of words in the language, which further supported the main claim of a dual-level model where information about verbal associations is stored outside semantic memory.

Yasutake, Yuko. "English and Japanese word associations and syntagmatic-paradigmatic shift of Japanese children learning English as a second language". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25540.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Research in word association studies found that children give predominantly syntagmatic responses (responses from different form classes from stimuli). English children were found to undergo a shift to paradigmatic (responses from the same form classes as stimuli) before age ten (referred to as S-P shift) which is the adult norm. On the other hand, Japanese children do not have S-P shift, and Japanese adults' responses are dominantly syntagmatic (Moran 1968). Leicester (1981) collected English word association responses from Japanese beginner and advanced learners of English as a second language and found S-P shift like increase of paradigmatic responses as English ability improves. This study purports to replicate Leicester's study among children. It is because the existence of the S-P shift in English of second-language learners whose first language does not have the shift would mean that second language learning parallels first language acquisition. Two main hypothesis were tested: 1. That Japanese children learning English as a second language will give dominantly syntagmatic responses in Japanese regardless of their grade level. 2. That Japanese children learning English as a second language of higher grade level will give more paradigmatic responses than those of lower grade level. Three subsidiary hypotheses were tested: 3. That Japanese children learning English as a second language will give different proportion of paradigmatic responses in Japanese and English. 4. That Japanese children learning English as a second language will give different pattern of responses in each language. 5. That Japanese children learning English as a second language will give fewer paradigmatic responses in English than monolingual English children of the same grade. Thirty students each of grades one, three, and five from two Japanese supplementary schools in Vancouver and Seattle were used as subjects. The subjects attend regular English classes at public schools, and therefore, their English ability was assumed to parallel their grade level. 27-item word association test was administered in English and Japanese. The ratio of paradigmatic responses was analyzed according to grade level. In agreement with literature, no grade difference was found among Japanese paradigmatic responses. In English, however, grade one subjects performed most paradigmatically, and thereby, no linear correspondence between English ability and English paradigmatic responses was found. Although English responses were close to the English norm, and Japanese responses to the Japanese norm, a significant number of Japanese responses were given in English association by grade five students. Significant difference in paradigmaticity was also found when two schools were compared as well as between two languages. Grade one students outperformed equivalent English monolingual children in English. It was speculated that young children develop L2 vocabulary systems independently and directly from the start resulting in higher rate of paradigmatic responses, whereas older children initially construct a one to one association between LI and L2, resulting in translation responses and low paradigmaticity in the case of English. School difference suggests that there are some other variables affecting word association.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractProviding a definitive interpretation of many ideas in Aristotle’s moral and political works has proved to be a difficult task for his commentators, both ancient and modern. The relation between the individual human good and the communal good is a particularly complex problem, especially because of its association with complicated notions of human happiness, practical wisdom, and contemplative and political virtue. This chapter considers the question of the superiority of the common good over individual happiness in light of these accompanying ideas. The many conflicting explanations of these doctrines are the result of Aristotle’s method of providing only general principles and a broad outline of moral concepts. That there may never be a consensus on the exact meaning of many of Aristotle’s ideas may not be a weakness in his work but rather a strength, which he himself had envisaged, since he allows the practically wise person to determine the best course of action in order to attain human goodness.

Abstract (sommario):
Psychological research into the influence of culture, intercultural interactions on different aspects of a person's life is still relevant. The presented research is devoted to identifying what values of what type of culture (traditional modern and dynamic according to J. Townsend) are shared by contemporary high school students aged 15-17 in Russia. Their own idea of values and how they represent the values of their immediate environment were studied. The measure of the coincidence of these ideas may indicate the state of cultural self-determination of high school students: they have their own values, different from the immediate environment, or, on the contrary, share the values of the immediate environment. The study revealed that the values of contemporary culture are the most popular among these young people. In general, the ideas of high school students about their values and the values of their inner circle coincide, since no significant differences have been revealed. Thus, the values of contemporary teenagers have been identified – the culture that allows them to be in harmony with themselves and their environment (society and nature).

Abstract (sommario):
Thermal inertia of the grout and of the ground located close to the borehole play an important role in the thermal response of geothermal boreholes to rapidly varying heating and cooling needs in buildings. The classical multipole method, developed by Bennet, Claesson, and Hellström in the 1980s, does not consider that thermal inertia, which is why the enhanced multipole method was recently proposed by the authors. The present work gives an overview of the fundamental ideas behind the enhanced multipole method, of its term-by-term convergence to the classical multipole method in the limit of vanishing thermal inertia, and of its performance in a numerical example.

Abstract (sommario):
Tempino structure is one of the brownfield structures in Jambi. Air Benakat and Gumai Formation have been producing hydrocarbon since 1920s and currently the Tempino structure contributes about 900 BOPD to the oil production of Jambi Field. There are 218 wells in Tempino before the success of drilling T-219 well in 2021. The T-219 well produced more than 400 BOPD from the Gumai Formation as confirmed the hydrocarbon potential in central block, to be followed by 7 approved-wells proposed to be drilled in 2022-2023, a most aggressive activity in Tempino in the last 20 years. Only about 13 wells of Tempino’s wells penetrated the Gumai Formation. The drawback in assessing subsurface was due to data (availability, quality, and comprehensiveness) to the production analogue, as there was no particular problem with the reservoir distribution. Three simple ideas of well profile mapping, selective layer perforation method, and fracturing design are lessons learned from many wells whose performance was not as expected, ideas which were then implemented in T-219 wells. The data acquisition result of T-219 well was surprisingly indicating that the Gumai sand had oil occurrence, near virgin formation pressure, and around 20 meters shallower than estimated. The updated static and dynamic model showed a significant change to the previous model, as vertical seismic profiling (VSP) and pressure test data played a massive role. The latest model shows great potential of central block of Tempino, where T-219 well was placed. In contrast to the T-219 well, it is assumed that the following wells will have better properties and the production forecast with low uncertainty case. On the other hand, there is still a big question to be answered, as more than 100 meters of Gumai sand is considered to have vertical barrier as the porosity log shows several streaks of more-dense materials in the midst of the sand. When this question is resolved, the Gumai sand in Tempino will probably have a bigger estimate of hydrocarbon potential. The Lessons learned of this success story in discovering hydrocarbon in a mature field is to implement a novel approach and learn from the ideas of previous well proposals.

Abstract (sommario):
This study analyzes how the Chilean curriculum of primary education (6-14 years) approaches the teaching of statistics and probability, in terms of the sense proposed, as well as in the fundamental statistical ideas promoted. For this purpose, a theoretical and qualitative analysis was performed, focusing on content analysis. The results indicate that the ideas of data, data representation, distribution, variation, probability, sampling and inference, and association and correlation stand out from greater to lesser emphasis. It should be noted that these ideas are approached with different levels of depth according to the ages of the students and as progress is made in the different courses that make up the Primary Education.

Abstract (sommario):
Preparing a successful small grant proposal involves research, planning, preparation, and determination, but obtaining funding for a creative project is not unrealistic. Practitioners are in the trenches on a daily basis, and many likely have novel ideas and relevant questions, especially when it comes to interventions. These intervention questions are important, with the American Occupational Therapy Association reporting that more studies are needed to investigate and support occupation-based intervention. By developing partnerships, educators, practitioners, and students can engage in small scale projects to further the knowledge base in the field of occupational therapy.

Cuello, Hugo, Alex Glennie e Nyangala Zolho. Innovation Agencies in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Characterization of the RELAI Network. Inter-American Development Bank, novembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0004574.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This report considers the ways in which innovation agencies are currently operating across Latin America and the Caribbean. The analysis is focused on the Latin American Network of Innovation Agencies (RELAI), which is an association that brings together the main national and regional innovation agencies in the region. Although this is a study of the institutions that are members of RELAI, the insights and recommendations are intended to be useful to other innovation agencies across the region and worldwide. This research revealed six key factors that are significant in shaping an innovation agency's role in its system: harmonized ecosystem, institutional safeguards, learning culture, autonomy and influence, skills and talent, and networks and reach. This report considers each factor, offering a general framework to help agencies assess where they are in relation to each area and suggesting ideas for action to support the development of agency capabilities and preparedness for future challenges.

Abstract (sommario):
As part of a cooperative agreement with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Federal Award Identification Number [FAIN]: NU50CK000586), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) began a strategic initiative in 2022 both to increase confidence in COVID-19 vaccines and to address medical misinformation and mistrust through education in health professions contexts. Specifically, the AAMC solicited proposals for integrating competency-based, interprofessional strategies to mitigate health misinformation into new or existing curricula. Five Health Professions Education Curricular Innovations subgrantees received support from the AAMC in 2022 and reflected on the implementation of their ideas in a series of meetings over several months. Subgrantees included the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, the Maine Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine, and the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. This paper comprises insights from each of the teams and overarching observations regarding the challenges and opportunities involved with leveraging health professions education to address medical misinformation and improve patient health.

Luengas, Pavel, e Inder J. Ruprah. Fear of Crime: Does Trust and Community Participation Matter? Inter-American Development Bank, luglio 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0008765.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines the association between trust and community involvement with fear of crime. Fear of crime is measured by three typical perception measures: neighbourhood security; walking alone in the dark; and the risk of becoming a victim. The data is from Chile's Victimisation Survey. The techniques used are a multinomial regression and an impact -propensity score single difference- calculation. We find that while trust matters participation generally does not for fear. However, regressions leave open the direction of causality. An impact calculation confirms that participation in a neighbourhood crime prevention program does not affect the fear of crime. Thus the evidence challenges the general idea that involvement in one's community and the specific idea of community participation in neighbourhood crime prevention programs reduce fear and increase feelings of safety.

Abstract (sommario):
Certain new ultrasonic meter designs in were evaluated in compact installations. The natural gas industry is interested in realizing possible capital cost savings that would be achieved if ultrasonic meters could be installed in a configuration using meter tube lengths that are shorter than those commonly used today. As a starting point for this study, the short- and close-coupled installation details described in American Gas Association Report 7, Measurement of Gas by Turbine Meters, were accepted as reasonable short dimension installations to be studied. This document reports on the test results for three different new ultrasonic meter designs that were evaluated in the short-coupled and close-coupled installations Recommendations are made for industrys application of these technologies. This study was developed in two parts, Phase I and Phase II. Phase I was focused on ultrasonic meter performance with ideal inlet flow conditions to the meter tube assembly. Phase II examined the response of the meters when the compact meter assembly was subjected to perturbed inlet flow conditions.

Hicks, Jacqueline. Donor Support for ‘Informal Social Movements’. Institute of Development Studies, aprile 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.085.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
“Social movements” are by definition informal or semi-formal, as opposed to the formal structure of a stable association, such as a club, a corporation, or a political party. They are relatively long lasting over a period of weeks, months, or even years rather than flaring up for a few hours or a few days and then disappearing (Smelser et al., 2020). There is a substantial and growing body of work dedicated to social movements, encompassing a wide range of views about how to define them (Smelser et al., 2020). This is complicated by the use of other terms which shade into the idea of “social movements”, such as grass-roots mobilisation/ movements, non-traditional civil society organisations, voluntary organisations, civic space, new civic activism, active citizenship, to name a few. There is also an implied informality to the term “social movements”, so that the research for this rapid review used both “social movement” and “informal social movement”. Thus this rapid review seeks to find out what approaches do donors use to support “informal social movements” in their programming, and what evidence do they base their strategies on. The evidence found during the course of this rapid review was drawn from both the academic literature, and think-tank and donor reports. The academic literature found was extremely large and predominantly drawn from single case studies around the world, with few comparative studies. The literature on donor approaches found from both donors and think tanks was not consistently referenced to research evidence but tended to be based on interviews with experienced staff and recipients.
