Abstract (sommario):
In 1840, Theodore Edward Cantor, nephew of Nathaniel Wallich, served as an assistant surgeon with the British forces on an expedition to China during the First Opium War. Cantor, a keen naturalist, was requested to use the opportunity to collect natural history specimens for the East India Company. Despite only spending four months on Chusan (Zhoushan), Cantor managed to amass a considerable number of specimens on the voyage and during the time in China. Cantor sought assistance from William Griffith with the identification of the plants, Edward Blyth with the birds, William Benson with the molluscs and Frederick Hope with the insects. Cantor published an account of Chusan and its fauna in Annals and magazine of natural history in 1842, but he also submitted the work to the Asiatic Society of Bengal to be published in Asiatick researches with many coloured plates and a chapter on the plants by William Griffith. The cost and slow progress with producing the plates contributed to the demise of Asiatick researches and the failure to publish the Chusan report as intended. William Griffith's paper on the botany was issued in a small number of preprints paginated either from 1 or from 33 in late 1844 or very early 1845. Sets of the twelve hand-coloured lithograph plates that were completed were issued with proof copies of pp 1–32 representing the introductory material written by Cantor as Zoology of Chusan, probably in 1847.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Centella asiatica has been recognized for centuries in Eastern medicine for its pharmacological properties. Due to the increasing prevalence of oncological diseases worldwide, natural substances that could qualify as anticancer therapeutics are becoming increasingly important subjects of research. This review aims to find an innovative use for asiatic acid (AA) in the treatment or support of cancer therapy. It has been demonstrated that AA takes part in inhibiting phosphorylation, inducing cell death, and reducing tumor growth and metastasis by influencing important signaling pathways, such as PI3K, Akt, mTOR, p70S6K, and STAT3, in cancer cells. It is also worth mentioning the high importance of asiatic acid in reducing the expression of markers such as N-cadherin, β-catenin, claudin-1, and vimentin. Some studies have indicated the potential of asiatic acid to induce autophagy in cancer cells through changes in the levels of specific proteins such as LC3 and p62. It can also act as an anti-tumor immunotherapeutic agent, thanks to its inductive effect on Smad7 in combination with naringenin (an Smad3 inhibitor). It seems that asiatic acid may be a potential anticancer drug or form of adjunctive therapy. Further studies should take into account safety and toxicity issues, as well as limitations related to the pharmacokinetics of AA and its low oral bioavailability.

Abstract (sommario):
Acne is an inflammatory skin condition caused by sebaceous follicles and characterized by skin inflammation in the form of a buildup of bacteria and oil that clogs pores and causes acne. Centella asiatica (L.) Urb., often known as gotu kola, has antibacterial properties that inhibit Propionibacterium acnes, thereby reducing papules, pustules, and nodules. Antioxidants, asiatic acid, and madecassic acid found in gotu kola (Centella asiatica (L.) Urb.) can treat wounds. Skin damaged by acne can be repaired and rejuvenated with gotu kola antioxidants, which also help collagen formation more quickly in the skin. This research aims to examine the ability of gotu kola (Centella asiatica (L.) Urb.) extract to inhibit acne-causing bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) resulting from a literature review. This research method is a literature review or literature review. Research journals that met the inclusion criteria (activity test results suppressing bacterial growth activity) were collected, and a journal summary was made. A summary of the research journals is included in the table sorted by the year of publication of the journal. Based on the results of a literature review carried out by researchers, Gotu kola can be extracted using the maceration method by soaking the plant material in an extraction solvent such as ethanol or water for a specified time. This process was used to remove the active components from the plant material. The inhibition zone formed was evaluated to determine the effectiveness of the extracts or preparations containing gotu kola extract in preventing bacterial growth ...

Abstract (sommario):
This study analyzes the presence, appropriation and influence of India in the period of genesis of the Schopenhauer\'s philosophy (1811-1818). In order to sustain such a thesis, this work tries to develop a rigorous analyzis, both philosophic and historic. The historical materials analyzed here are three works consulted by the philosopher and borrowed from the libraries of Weimar and Dresden between 1813 and 1816: Asiatisches Magazin (two volumes), Mythologie des Indous (two volumes) and Asiatick Researches (the first nine volumes). In them it can be found important Indian concepts to Schopenhauer, such as Māyā, Brahman, Ātman, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, liṅgaṃ, saṁnyāsins, Buddha, Tat tvam asi, metempsicose, nirvāṇa, among others. Concepts that are present in the Schopenhauerian Manuscripts, as well as in his capital work, The World as Will and Representation, published in 1818. My goal is to demonstrate that the \"Schopenhauerian India\" was built upon contributions that transcendend those he obtained from the Oupnek\'hat (Upani?ads). Indeed, as I will try to prove, these three works on India were fundamental to the understanding acquired by the philosopher about Hinduism and Buddhism.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This chapter examines imperial and ethnographic constructions of ‘Asia’ by the orientalists of British India. The foundation of the Asiatick Society of Bengal in 1784, accompanied by publications including literary translations of Indian texts and periodicals such as the Asiatick Researches, inaugurated a profound reimagining of Asia viewed from an Indocentric perspective during the Romantic period. Focusing on selected works of literary orientalism including William Jones’s Presidential discourses to the Asiatick Society, this chapter analyses the considerable cultural, ideological, and epistemological work involved in such a reframing of geographical understanding. The anxious and fractured nature of Romantic apprehensions of Asia, beset by spurious notions of sinology and troubled by China’s resistance to British imperial interests, is shown to impact on metropolitan prose writers, who distanced themselves from what they perceived as the Asiatic style, even as Asian ideas and motifs suffused and haunted their writings.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract When William Roxburgh left Calcutta to regain his health early in 1813, very few of his friends expected him to return. It was generally known that Francis Buchanan was the Company’s next nominee for the post and if he refused there would be no shortage of contenders. Among them was Thomas Hardwicke (1755-1835), an all-round amateur naturalist with a predilection for zoology. Early in his military career he had botanized on a tour to Srinagar in Kashmir and described his gatherings in Asiatick Researches. He discovered Rhododendron arboreum in the Siwalik Hills and sent seeds of it to England, the first Indian rhododendron to be introduced to European gardens. Sir James Edward Smith was pleased to copy Hardwicke’s drawing of this rhododendron in his Exotic botany (1804). The opportunity, however, for Hardwicke to change career never arose and he eventually retired from the Bengal Artillery in 1823 with the rank of Major-General.

Abstract (sommario):
Citrus Bacterial Canker Disease (CBCD), caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. citri, occurs in many citrus areas of the world. It has been reported in 40 different countries, on 5 continents (Asia, South Africa, Australia, South America and North America). Prior to the 1984 outbreak in Florida, the 4 known strains of the bacterium were A, B, C and Mexican bacterioses. Canker-A or Strain-A, endemic in Asia, was reported in China, India and Java in the early 1800’s, found in Japan in 1899 and in the Philippines in 1914. It affects most citrus species and hybrids. Grapefruit is especially susceptible. Strain-A was introduced into the United States from Japan on trifoliate orange seedlings in 1910. An eradication program was started in 1915 in Florida and the disease was eradicated in 1927. In South America, the Asiatic form was not found until 1957 in Brazil and 1972 in Argentina. In 1979, the A Strain broke out in the commercial citrus area of Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Paper published with permission.

Abstract (sommario):
Citrus Huanglongbing (HLB) or citrus greening disease has been in Florida since at least 2005 and has spread to all of the citrus producing regions. The Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) is the insect that transmits the suspected causal bacterium which is tentatively named Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus. Symptoms of the disease are first the yellow shoot (huanglongbing) and the development of the blotchy mottle symptom in the leaves. Mineral deficiency symptoms are often found on infected trees and may mimic normal deficiency symptoms. Fruit on infected trees may be small and lopsided and may abscise prematurely and therefore productivity is reduced. Tree decline eventually occurs. The suspected causal bacterium has not been obtained in pure culture and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test along with symptoms, is the only way to verify infected trees. All citrus cultivars appear susceptible. Current management strategies are chemical and biological control to reduced psyllid populations, inspections for infected trees and removal of infected trees to reduce the available pathogen inoculum. Current research on psyllid control, psyllid transmission, symptomology, detection, culturing the causal agent, development of new detection methods, alternative hosts of the psyllid and the causal agent, physiology of the disease, resistant or tolerant cultivar development and more is discussed. HLB is a major problem for citrus production and often limits commercial production. Paper published with permission.
