A reader asks: I recently had the opportunity to read Donn and Banagale's informative article entitled, "Neonatal Hyperammonemia" (Pediatrics in Review 1984; 5:203-208). I am somewhat confused by Table 5 which lists the ingredients for 1.5% dextrose-bicarbonate peritoneal dialysate. The use of a total of 167 mEq/L of sodium seems nonphysiologic and combination of calcium and bicarbonate, if I remember correctly, leads to precipitation. Dr. Donn replies: There was an error in Table 5 in our review article. Unfortunately, the error was missed by both authors, internal reviewers, and external reviewers as well. As indicated, the total sodium concentration of the dialysis solution is too high. The total sodium concentration, the combination of sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate should approximate 132 to 136 mEq/L. At the present time, our special peritoneal dialysis solution contains 95 mEq/L of sodium chloride and 40 mEq/L of sodium bicarbonate for a total of 135 mEq/L. This is certainly within the physiologic realm and avoids problems with sodium flux. With regard to concern about the precipitation of calcium and bicarbonate, the concentrations of both calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate are low enough that they do not exceed the solubility product and, therefore, remain in solution.

The spider subfamily Spartaeinae Wanless, with its only New World tribe Lapsiini (Araneae: Salticidae) is for the first time recorded from Colombia. Six new species of the genera Lapsias Simon and Thrandina Maddison are described and illustrated herein from the country. From the Andean region are described: L. iguaque sp. nov. (♂; Boyacá department), Lapsias quimbaya sp. nov. (♂; Quindío, Risaralda, and Caldas departments), L. tequendama sp. nov. (♂; Cundinamarca department), L. walekeru sp. nov. (♂; La Guajira department), and Thrandina colombiaenpaz sp. nov. (♂♀; Huila department). From the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Magdalena department, Caribbean region, is described L. tayrona sp. nov. (♂♀). In addition, new records of Galianora sacha Maddison and L. lorax Maddison for the country are presented, and the female of L. lorax is described for the first time. Finally, a map with plotted distribution of the tribe Lapsiini from South America is presented.

Present study on the morphological characterization of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) was conducted at Maharajpur Vegetable Farm, Department of Horticulture, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur. Utilizing 43 genotypes from different regions of Madhya Pradesh, the study aimed to enhance crop improvement programs by understanding genetic diversity. Present study was conducted on forty- three genotypes of chilli collected from Department of Horticulture, Department of Plant Breeding Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV), Jabalpur. Genotypes have harboured appreciable amounts of variation for morphological, growth and yield attributing traits were analyzed for Phenotypic co efficient of variance (PCV), Genotypic co efficient of variance (GCV) and heritability along with genetic advance. Genetic divergence through multivariate analysis using D2 statistics was done and clustering of forty-three genotypes was done using Tocher’s method of clustering analysis. GCV and PCV were resulted as moderate and high level whereas heritability coupled with Genetic advance were recorded as moderate to high level. 6 clusters formed in 43 genotypes using Mahalanobis D2.

Background: Many patients present to emergency departments (EDs) with an altered state of consciousness. Fast exclusion of gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB)-associated intoxication in these patients may optimize diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms and decisions in the ED. Methods: Between January and March 2014, a novel enzymatic test system was used to quantify GHB in blood and urine samples of suspected intoxicated patients in the ED of the University Hospital. The underlying causes for suspected intoxication and the diagnostic and therapeutic measures were documented and analysed retrospectively. Results: GHB measurements were performed in 13 patients with suspected ingestion during a 3-month study period. GHB was positive in six patients showing serum levels between 61.8 mg/l and 254.8 mg/l, and GHB was tested negative in seven patients with a range of 0.3–6.2 mg/l (upper reference limit 6.1 mg/l). Additional intoxication was found in five of six GHB positive (83%, alcohol n = 2 and other drugs n = 5) and in six of seven negative-tested patients (86%, alcohol n = 5 and other drugs n = 1). Conclusion: GHB quantification in the ED provides specific additional information for intoxication, which can lead to more precise diagnostic and therapeutic decisions and may also be important for legal aspects. We believe that GHB analysis in unconscious patients with suspected intoxication may improve the efficient treatment of intoxicated patients.

CaseA 20-year-old woman was referred to the emergency department with rapid acceleration of complaints of palpitations, fever, diarrhea, and agitation that had been present for several weeks. During physical examination, the patient was uncomfortable and restless with a tachycardia of 170/minute, and a fever of 38.5 °C. Palpation of the neck revealed a small ventral, painless, solid elastic mass, more prominent on the right side, clinically suspicious for goiter. An electrocardiograph showed an atrial flutter of 150/min. Initial laboratory results showed an erythrocyte sedimentation rate of 35 mm/hour (0–20 mm/hour) and urine analysis tested positive for ketones.Outcome and TreatmentThe patient was presumed to be suffering from a thyroid storm. She was treated promptly with Propranolol 160 mg and Thiamazole 30 mg twice daily at the emergency department. She was admitted to the Cardiac Care Unit for observation of the heart rhythm, which slowed down to 110/minute the same day and her condition improved clinically. The following day her laboratory result confirmed the diagnosis with a thyroid-stimulating hormone of < 0.01 mIU/L (0.4–4.0 mIU/L) and a free thyroxine (T4) of > 75 pmol/l (10–22 pmol/l). Eventually, she was diagnosed with Graves Disease.DiscussionThyroid storm is an acute, life-threatening, hypermetabolic state induced by excessive release of thyroid hormones. The adult mortality rate is high (90%) if early diagnosis is not made and the patient is left untreated. Therefore, in case of clinical suspicion for thyroid storm, it is critical to start prompt treatment with Beta blockade and Thiamazole before the diagnosis can be confirmed biochemically.

Abstract Background Metformin associated lactic acidosis (MALA) is a serious adverse event with a high mortality rate of 30–50%. Early recognition of MALA and timely starting treatment may reduce its morbidity and mortality. Objective The aim of this study was to explore clinical parameters to identify patients with MALA in patients with suspected sepsis induced lactic acidosis in the emergency department ED. Setting A retrospective single centre study was conducted at the Deventer Teaching Hospital in the Netherlands. Method Patients with lactate concentration > 4.0 mmol/l admitted at the ED between 2010 and 2017 with suspected sepsis or confirmed MALA and referred to the Intensive Care Unit were included. Baseline characteristics (pH, lactate, creatinine and CRP) of MALA patients were compared with patients with suspected sepsis induced lactic acidosis. Creatinine and lactate concentration were selected as potential relevant parameters. Main outcome measure Sensitivity and specificity of the highest tertiles of the creatinine and the lactate concentrations separately, in combination, and both combined with metformin use, were calculated. Results Thirteen MALA and 90 suspected sepsis induced lactic acidosis patients were included. Lactate (14.7 vs 5.9 mmol/l, p < 0.01) and creatinine concentration (642 vs 174 μmol/l, p < 0.01) were significantly higher in the MALA group and arterial pH (7.04 vs 7.38, p < 0.01) and CRP (90 vs 185 mg/l, p < 0.01) were significantly lower. The combined parameters lactate ≥ 8.4 mmol/l, creatinine ≥ 256 μmol/l had a sensitivity of 85% and a specificity of 95% for identifying MALA in suspected sepsis induced lactic acidosis patients in the ED. When combined with metformin use the specificity increased to 99%. Conclusion When managing lactic acidosis in the ED the diagnosis MALA should be considered in patients with a creatinine concentration ≥ 256 μmol/l and lactate concentration ≥ 8.4 mmol/l.

There have only been a few reported cases of successful management of extreme hyperkalaemia in excess of 10.0 mmol/L.

Background: Sepsis is a leading cause of death in emergency department. Serum lactate level assessment can play an important role for risk assessment and prognostication in critically ill septic patient.Objective: The objective of this study is to determine the relevance of initial serum lactate measurement after the implementation of sepsis protocol in emergency department, based on guidelines of Surviving Sepsis Campaign.Methods: This was a cross sectional descriptive study conducted at Patan Hospital from January 2014 to January 2015 among 94 sample of serum lactate who had clinical suspicion of sepsis as per established sepsis emergency department protocol. Data of serum lactate sent from emergency department was noted from the registry book of department of biochemistry, Patan Academy of Health Sciences. Based on clinical practice the obtained lactate results were stratified intothreerisk groups: high (> 4 mmol/L), intermediate (2.5 to 3.99 mmol/L) and low (< 2.5 mmol/L).Result: Out of the total 94 samples, 56 (59.6%) were male and 38 (40.4%) were female. Mean lactate level in males was 5.73 mmol/L and that in females was 5.47 mmol/L. Abnormal lactate level was predominantly high 85 (80%) out of which 31 (29%) had intermediate whereas more than half 54 (50.76%) had high lactate level.Conclusion: This study tells that clinically diagnosed sepsis do have higher serum lactate level. Usage the agent has been proved to be effective for equipment and room disinfection 0.5-0.6% solution in slaughtering department, 0.6% in sanitary slaughtering department based on 0.5 l/ m2, 0.5% in sausage department based on 0.3 l/m2 with irrigation method at 20 min exposure; technologic equipment when machine is on with circulation method 0.5% solution at 10 min exposure. Working solutions have no corrosion action towards stainless steel that is applied for equipment making at poultry processing enterprises. The solutions are being washed well from the surfaces being treated.

Abstract The experiment was conducted in the plant tissue culture laboratory of the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Engineering, College of Agriculture, Al-Qasim Green University. For the purpose of evaluating the tolerance of celery cultivar Festival to water stress in vitro using three concentrations of polyethylene glycol (PEG) (4, 0.2 mg L-1) and three concentrations of nano selenium (Se) (4, 2, 0 mg L-1) in the growth and multiplication of strawberry shoots. The apical meristem taken from the purlins of the aforementioned cultivar, which was obtained from Najaf Research Department - Agricultural Research Department - Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture, was cultivated in the MS medium (Murashige and Skoog) supplied with (1 mg L-1BA + 0. mg L-1). IBA + 80 mg L-1adenine sulfate) for 4 weeks, Then the percentage of surviving plants, the average number of shoots formed, their lengths, the number of leaves, and their fresh and dry weights were calculated as indicators of their response and tolerance to water stress. The results showed a significant reduction in the percentage of plant survival, the number of branches and their lengths, the number of leaves, and their fresh and dry weights when the concentration of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in the multiplication medium was increased. The lowest values were recorded at a concentration of 4 mg L-1compared to the highest results when the control treatment was 0 mg L-1. As for the nano selenium, the highest values were recorded at a concentration of 4 mg L-1compared to the lowest results when the comparison treatment was 0 mg L-1.

The significance of hyperketonemia in adults with diabetes presenting to the emergency department with acute illness, not due to a diabetic hyperglycemic emergency, has not been well characterized. Adult patients with diabetes presenting to the emergency department who had venous blood gas and beta-hydroxybutyrate levels measured whilst in the emergency department were retrospectively evaluated for the relationship between BHB and clinical outcomes. Over 6 months, 404 patients with diabetes had at least one beta-hydroxybutyrate level measured in the emergency department. There were 23 admissions for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or hyperosmolar state. Of the remainder, 58 patients had a beta-hydroxybutyrate≥1 mmol/L; this group had a higher glucose at presentation (19.0 (8.8) versus 10.4 (9.9) mmol/L), higher HbA1c (8.8 (5.4) versus 8.0 (3.3)%), lower bicarbonate (22.6 (6.2) versus 24.8 (4.7) mmol/L), and higher anion gap (14.8 (6.1) versus 12.6 (4.2)) than had those with BHB<1 mmol/L. There was no association between the presence of ketosis and the length of stay (4.2 (7.3) versus (3.0) (7.2) days). Acute illness in those with diabetes associated with ketosis in the absence of DKA is associated with worse glycaemic control than in those without ketosis. Ketosis may represent an intermediate state of metabolic dysregulation rather than being associated with a more severe acute illness, as suggested by no relationship between BHB and length of stay.

Wheat is one of the most economically important cereals for the Department of Boyacá; however, the cultivated area sees low yields, phytosanitary problems, and a lack of genetic materials with desirable agronomic characteristics. The present study aimed to morphoagronomically characterize 49 accessions from the FENALCE germplasm bank using morphological and yield descriptors and multivariate and cluster analyses. The variables auricle color, edge shape, precocity, growth habit, grain size and serosity showed little genetic variability, while the number of tillers per plant, number of spikelets per spike and glume color showed high genetic variability. The principal component analysis, based on the correlation matrix, showed that the first four principal components (PC) explained 71% of the total variation observed in the characterized accessions. The cluster analysis formed three groups according to the evaluated morphological characteristics, with group three containing the accessions with the best agronomic characteristics. None of the evaluated accessions had rust damage. Around 15 wheat accessions had good agronomic performance under the conditions of this study, which should be used in future genetic improvement programs aimed at identifying elite materials in the Department of Boyacá.

Hyperprolactinemia is the most common endocrine disorder involving hypothalamic–pituitary axis. This results from multiple causes such as medications, hypothyroidism, and pituitary disorders. Hyperprolactinemia and hypothyroidism are closely interrelated conditions. The present study aimed to estimate serum prolactin levels and determine the prevalence of hyperprolactinemia in newly diagnosed subclinical and clinical hypothyroid patients and correlation between TSH and prolactin levels in subclinical and clinical hypothyroid patients.This study was conducted in the Department of Biochemistry, in collaboration with Department of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, LATE BRKM Government Medical College, Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, India. Total of 138 patients presenting to Department of Medicine for various thyroid related problems were involved in this study. The newly diagnosed cases of primary hypothyroidism were included in this study. The demographic, physical and clinical history was taken from all the study subjects. In the present study, serum prolactin levels were significantly increased in subclinical (28.7 ± 6.4 ng/mL) and clinical hypothyroidism (15.02 ± 4.2ng/mL) compared to controls. Hyperprolactinemia was observed in 11 (22.9%) patients in subclinical hypothyroidism and 4 (8.3%) in clinical hypothyroid patients. In the subclinical hypothyroidism and clinical hypothyroidism, the serum TSH levels were (17.01 ± 8.2 μU/l, 7.3 ± 2.0 μU/l respectively) significantly increased than the controls. In the clinical hypothyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism, the serum free T3 (fT3) levels were (5.6 ± 0.68 pmol/l, 2.54 ± 0.43 pmol/l respectively) significantly increased than the controls. In the clinical hypothyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism, the serum total T3 (T3) levels were (1.27± 0.24 nmol/l, 0.59±0.12 nmol/l respectively) significantly increased than the controls. The study results may conclude that, prolactin regulation is altered, in patients with clinical and subclinical hypothyroidism. Thyroid functions tests ought to be conducted in patients with hyperprolactinemia prior to performing further tests.

It was developed by phenotypic selection from introduced lines for vigour, seed retention and low alkaloid concentrations, followed by half-sib progeny testing for forage yield. In forage dry matter, it yielded 101% of the check cultivar Vantage over 18 station years in the trials of the Québec forage testing network. The aim of the study was to perform a retrospective analysis of the morbidity of patients with allergic reactions hospitalized in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery of the Institute of Emergency Medicine in Chisinau during 2015—2019. To achieve the aim, the medical records of 263 patients, hospitalized during the evaluated period, were studied. It was revealed that the frequency of patients with drug allergies accounted for 3% of the total number of patients hospitalized in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery during 2015—2019. The analysis of statistical data found an increased incidence of drug allergy in women, most of them with various chronic diseases and allergy to a single drug. A higher frequency of hypersensitivity to local anesthetics was recorded in the group of amidine derivatives (72%).

A male patient aged in his early twenties presented to the emergency department (ED) with quadriparesis. He was ordinarily fit and well and had exercised and eaten a carbohydrate rich meal the evening before. His point-of-care venous blood sample on arrival to the ED showed hypokalaemia of 1.6 mmol/L. (normal range=3.5–5.0 mmol/L). He was put on a cardiac monitor and started on an intravenous infusion of potassium chloride. With the benefit of hindsight, his male sex, particular features in his history and his initial ECG all pointed to a differential diagnosis of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP), although a differential diagnosis of a first attack of familial hypokalaemic paralysis was considered. As urgent thyroid function tests were sent promptly, there was minimal delay in reaching a diagnosis of TPP and promptly starting propranolol as a safe and more effective means of reversing TPP, followed by definitive treatment with carbimazole.

ABSTRACTObjectivesThe aim of this study was to describe the sensitivity of various C-reactive protein (CRP) cut-off values to identify patients requiring magnetic resonance imaging evaluation for pyogenic spinal infection among emergency department (ED) adults presenting with neck or back pain.MethodsWe prospectively enrolled a convenience series of adults presenting to a community ED with neck or back pain in whom ED providers had concern for pyogenic spinal infection in a derivation cohort from 2004 to 2010 and a validation cohort from 2010 to 2018. The validation cohort included only patients with pyogenic spinal infection. We analysed diagnostic test characteristics of various CRP cut-off values.ResultsWe enrolled 232 patients and analysed 201 patients. The median age was 55 years, 43.8% were male, 4.0% had history of intravenous drug use, and 20.9% had recent spinal surgery. In the derivation cohort, 38 (23.9%) of 159 patients had pyogenic spinal infection. Derivation sensitivity and specificity of CRP cut-off values were > 3.5 mg/L (100%, 24.8%), > 10 mg/L (100%, 41.3%), > 30 mg/L (100%, 61.2%), and > 50 mg/L (89.5%, 69.4%). Validation sensitivities of CRP cut-off values were > 3.5 mg/L (97.6%), > 10 mg/L (97.6%), > 30 mg/L (90.4%), and > 50 mg/L (85.7%).ConclusionsCRP cut-offs beyond the upper limit of normal had high sensitivity for pyogenic spinal infection in this adult ED population. Elevated CRP cut-off values of 10 mg/L and 30 mg/L require validation in other settings.

The study determines the influence of a low-frequency electromagnetic field on the anatomical stem structure of the annual seedlings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) with a root-balled system, carried out in the nursery of the Ustyansky forest seed breeding center of the Arkhangelsk region, and annual seedlings of red oak (Quercus rubra L. ) carried out in the forest nursery of the Donskoy forestry of the Forestry Department of the Lipetsk region, when planting in open ground with the introduction of a hydrogel. Experimental samples of annual seedlings of Scots pine and red oak were treated with a low-frequency electromagnetic field using the patented POSEP technology (pre-sowing treatment of seeds and seedlings with an electromagnetic field) using the «Rost-Active» device (low-frequency generator). Untreated seedlings served as control. Conducted in the laboratory of the Department of Forest Plantations, Breeding and Dendrology of the BMSTU (Mytishchi branch), histometric analyzes of experimental and control samples of annual seedlings of Scots pine and red oak showed a positive effect of a low-frequency electromagnetic field on the anatomical characteristics of their stems.

We investigated the agreement of capillary lactate measured using handheld analysers (CL-Nova and CL-Scout+ measured by Nova and Lactate Scout+ analyzers) and the reference venous level assessed using a point-of-care testing (POCT) blood gas analyser (VL-Ref).DesignA prospective observational study.SettingA university teaching hospital emergency department in Hong Kong.ParticipantsPatients triaged as ‘urgent’ (Category 3 of a 5-point scale), aged ≥18 years during 2016 were eligible. 240 patients (mean age 69.9 years) were recruited.Primary and secondary outcome measuresThe primary outcome measure was the agreement of the capillary blood lactate level measured by handheld lactate analyser when compared with the reference standard technique, namely venous blood samples obtained by venepuncture and analysed using the blood gas analyser. The secondary outcome measure was the difference in values of venous lactate using blood gas analysers and handheld lactate analysers.ResultsThe results of VL-Ref ranged from 0.70 to 5.38 mmol/L (mean of 1.96 mmol/L). Regarding capillary lactate measurements, the bias (mean difference) between VL-Ref and CL-Scout+ was −0.22 with 95% limits of agreement (LOA) of −2.17 to 1.73 mmol/L and the bias between VL-Ref and CL-Nova was 0.46, with LOA of −1.08 to 2.00 mmol/L. For venous lactate, results showed the bias between VL-Ref and VL-Scout+ was 0.22 with LOA being −0.46 to 0.90 mmol/L, and the bias between VL-Ref and VL-Nova was 0.83 mmol/L with LOA −0.01 to 1.66 mmol/L.ConclusionOur study shows poor agreement between capillary lactate and reference values. The study does not support the clinical utility of capillary lactate POCT. However, venous lactate measured by Scout+ handheld analyser may have potential for screening patients who may need further testing.Trial registration numberNCT02694887.

Listeriosis is a foodborne disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes. Because outbreaks of listeriosis are associated with the ingestion of contaminated dairy products, surveillance of artisanal cheeses to detect the presence of this microorganism is necessary. We collected three types of artisanal non-acid fresh cheese (Campesino, Costeño, and Cuajada) from 12 municipalities of the Department of Quindío, Colombia. L. monocytogenes was identified using VIDAS® and confirmed with API® Listeria Rapid Kit. L. monocytogenes was detected in 104 (53.6%) of the 194 artisanal fresh-cheese samples analyzed. The highest percentages of contamination were detected in Salento (90.9%), Calracá (65.5%), Armenia (64.9%), and Filandia (50%). A significant association between municipality and contamination with L. monocytogenes was identified. However, no association could be established between the type of cheese and the occurrence of the bacterium. This is the first study on the presence of L. monocytogenes in artisanal fresh cheeses sold in the municipalities of the Department of Quindío, and the findings revealed very high percentages of contaminated samples. The presence of L. monocytogenes in artisanal cheeses remains a public health threat in developing countries, especially Colombia, where existing legislation does not require the surveillance of L. monocytogenes in food.

Background: The identification of biomarkers associated with delirium in the emergency department could contribute to the understanding, prediction and diagnosis of this disorder. The present study was carried out to identify biomarkers included in easily and quickly obtained standard blood examinations in older patients with delirium in the emergency department. Methods: A case–control study was carried out in the emergency department of Francesc de Borja Hospital (Gandía, Valencia, Spain). Older adults (≥65 years of age) diagnosed with delirium (n = 128) were included. Cases due to alcohol or substance abuse were excluded. Controls were selected on a randomized basis from the remaining patients (n = 128). All laboratory test parameters included in the routine blood and urine tests of the emergency department were collected. Results: The mean age of the patients was 81.24 ± 7.51 years, and 56.2% were males, while the mean age of the controls was 78.97 ± 7.99 years, and 45.3% were males. Significant differences were found between the cases and controls in relation to the following parameters: urea 43 (32–58) mg/dL versus 50 (37–66) mg/dL, respectively; neutrophils 69.6 (62.05–78.75)% versus 75.5 (65.1–83.2)%; monocytes 8.7 (7–10.4)% versus 7.6 (5.5–9.2)%; platelets 213 (159–266) × 109/L versus 224 (182–289) × 109/L; neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio 3.88 (2.45–7.07) versus 5 (2.75–8.83); platelet–lymphocyte ratio 281.4 (210–360) versus 357.1 (257.8–457.1); and mean platelet volume 10.6 (10–11.5) fl versus 10.4 (9.67–10.9) fl. Although the mean values were above desirable levels in both groups, they were higher for most parameters in the control group. No significant differences were observed in C-reactive protein concentration (9.99 (1.69–51) mg/L versus 12.3 (3.09–65.97) mg/L). Conclusions: The identification of delirium biomarkers poses difficulties due to the urgent nature of the disorders found in older people admitted to the emergency department. Research in this field is needed, since it would allow early identification and treatment of delirium.

This paper follows the series of publications in «Vegetation of Russia» devoted to L. G. Ramensky (Golub, 2013, 2014, 2017). It describes a period of 1924–1928 when Ramensky worked at the Voronezh State University (VSU). This period of his life has previously been largely unknown even in the VSU. Furthermore, the author tries to follow the scientific life of Ramensky's students who have chosen the profession of phytocenologist. It turned out that events of 1924–1928 are difficult to restore, as a significant part of the VSU archive was lost during the World War II. Nevertheless, several new facts were found. Outstanding Russian botanists B. A. Keller (1874–1945) and B. M. Kozo-Polyansky (1890–1957) were colleagues by Ramensky at the VSU. Kozo-Polyansky, who was a head of the VSU Department of Botany, helped Ramensky's family to establish their life in Voronezh. He provided them with accommodation directly at the Department of Botany. The author found documents proving a previously unknown fact that Ramensky had worked at the VSU Department of Geobotany. However, after Ramensky left the University, this department was closed, and with time its existence at the VSU in 1920s was forgotten. The current Department of Botany and Mycology of the VSU, which will celebrate 100th anniversary in 2018, is not a successor of the Department of Geobotany. Two of the students who received education under the leadership by Ramensky at the VSU, M. V. Nikolaevskaya and I. A. Tsatsenkin, became professional geobotanists. M. V. Nikolaevskaya (1900–1950) worked with Ramensky for many years after graduation from the VSU. In 1932–1935 she participated in the inventory of natural forage lands of the USSR headed by Ramensky. Since 1936 until the end of her life Nikolaevskaya held the position of a scientific researcher at the Voronezh State Nature Reserve. Classification of its vegetation (Nikolaevskaya, 1971) became a result of her the long-term investigations. She was the first geobotanist in the USSR who applied Ramensky's indicator values for vegetation classification. I. A. Tsatsenkin (1905–1973) already in his second year at the VSU was involved as a student in geobotanical studies supervised by Ramensky. Since 1930, he permanently worked at the All-Union Williams Fodder Research Institute. Tsatsenkin was Ramensky's closest assistant in the course of the 1932–1935 campaign on the inventory of the natural forage lands of the USSR. In 1940–1943 he headed the Hay-and-pasture expedition to study the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. After Ramensky's death, Tsatsenkin, together with the staff of the institute, completed the work on the ecological indicator values of plants of the European part of the USSR (Ramensky et al., 1956).

Objective: to assess the utility of peripheral venous lactate (PVL) in Emergency Department patients. Methods: arteriovenous agreement was assessed in three subgroups: PVL <2 mmol/l, PVL ≥ 2 mmol/l to < 4 mmol/l and PVL ≥ 4 mmol/l. The predictive value of PVL to predict arterial lactate (AL) ≥2 mmol/l was assessed at different cut-off values. Results: 74 samples were analysed. The venous-arterial mean difference and 95% limits of agreement for the subgroups were 0.25 mmol/l (-0.18 to 0.68), 0.37 mmol/l (-0.57 to 1.32) and -0.89 mmol/l (-3.75 to 1.97). PVL ≥2 mmol/l predicts AL ≥2 mmol/l with 100% sensitivity. Conclusion: PVL <2 mmol/l rules out arterial hyperlactatemia. As agreement declines in higher levels, arterial sampling should be considered.

IntroductionSeizures represent 3% of all emergency department attendances.MethodsA list of all possible seizure mimics was generated from ED computerized triage systems from 1/1/12 to 31/12/13. Data was extracted manually from review of ED notes and analyzed.Results905 seizure attendances by 636 patients were examined over 2 years. 340 men and 296 women accounted for them, with average age 33±28 years. 245 patients had a history of epilepsy and were taking at least one AED. >2 AEDs were used by 32 patients. 22 had known Non-Epileptic Attacks (NEAD). Convulsive seizures occurred in 429 and Status Epilepticus in 13. The mode for the number of convulsive events in ED was 2 for NEAD patients and 1 for others. Lactate and neutrophils in NEAD were 1.3±0.3 mM and 4.4±1.2×10^9/L respectively. In other patients with convulsive seizures, they were 3.2 ±3.2 mM (median 2.1) and 6.6±3.1×10^9/L (median 6.1). 73 had neuroimaging acutely. Few patients with NEAD were admitted. 1/3 of convulsive seizures were admitted.ConclusionThis retrospective service audit indicates the burden of epilepsy attendance in a busy hospital. There is a potential role for more acute neurology input to prevent unnecessary admissions, and a pathway for non-epileptic attack sufferers.

Background: Consultation-liaison (C-L) psychiatry has emerged as a separate specialty in psychiatry in developed countries. It is an important component of a multidisciplinary hospital. In developing countries, this specialty is being underused and less emphasized. The reason for this could also be due to scarcity of study in this field in developing countries.Objective: To assess the socio-demographic and clinical variables of patients referred for C-L psychiatry in a tertiary hospital in western region of Nepal.Methods: One hundred consecutive inpatients referred for C-L psychiatry were assessed for socio demographic referrals, reason for referral and their attitude towards psychiatric referral. Each patient was evaluated in detail by consultant psychiatrists and the psychiatric diagnosis made according to the International Classification of Disease-10 (ICD-10) criteria.Results: The mean age of the sample was 40.28 years (±18.76) with male to female ratio of 1.27:1. The department of internal medicine was the most referring department (56%) andmajority of the patients referred had positive attitude towards psychiatric referral (94%). Alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS) and intentional self harm (21% each) were the most common psychiatric diagnoses made. Conclusions: psychiatry consultation was done mostly by the department of internal medicine and majority of patient had positive attitude toward psychiatric referral.Health Renaissance 2014;12(3): 170-174

El género Passiflora cuenta con un total de 13 especies hasta ahora determinadas para Lambayeque. Estas especies, algunas con sus taxones infraespecíficos, están incluidas en los subgéneros Passiflora y Decaloba. En el presente trabajo se reportan por primera vez para Lambayeque Passiflora cisnana, P. edulis f. flavicarpa, P. ligularis, P. manicata, P. mathewsii, P. quadrangularis, P. suberosa, P. tarminiana y P. tripartita var. mollissima. De entre ellas, 8 están restringidas a la zona andina del departamento, entre los 1000–4000 m, de elevación, y cinco especies habitan la franja costera. Se proporciona una clave y breves descripciones de cada taxón. Además, se añaden datos corológicos, ecológicos y etnobotánicos que complementan esta investigación.

Field experiment was carried out at the experimental field of the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology beside the screen house, to study yield evaluation in rice genotypes. The plot was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and the treatments replicated three times. Seven rice genotypes sourced from the department crop improvement unit were sowed in a plot size of 5×1m. The study was conducted in 2016/2017 planting seasons. Data were collected on yield component traits i.e. number of tillers, plant height, number of days to panicle initiation, number of days to maturity, panicle length, panicle weight, number of spikelet per panicle, number of grain per panicle, 1000 grain weight, grain yield per hill and flag leaf length. The result of factor analysis indicated that the first factor was positively loaded for yield component trait however; the first six principal components jointly accounted for 98.99% of the total variation among the genotype studied. High levels of variability expressed among the varieties suggested that further improvement in the varieties is possible.

The herb Euphorbia hypericifolia L. was recorded for the first time in the flora of Libya. The species was collected in Tobruk city in north eastern Libya in 2022. It is presented here with updated nomenclature, taxonomic description, geographical distribution, and the place of occurrence in Libya. A coloured photograph taken in the field is also provided. The voucher specimens have been deposited in the Herbarium of Botany Department (ULT), Faculty of Sciences, University of Tripoli, Libya.

Objective: This study was conducted to investigate and compare the analgesic activity of methanolic ex- tracts of seeds of Cuminum Cyminum (L) and Centratherum anthelminticum (L)in mice.
 Methods: This study was conducted in the department of Pharmacology University of Karachi; 30 healthy mice were selected from animal house of Pharmacology department of University of Karachi for the study. All animals were divided into three groups, each group of 10 mice. Mice of Group 1 were given DMSO (Dimethyl sulphoxide) an organic solvent, mice of group 2 were given Methanolic extract of Cuminum Cyminum (L) and mice of group 3 were given Methanolic extract of Centratherum anthelminticum (L). The analgesic activity was investigated by tail flick test, heat is used to stimulate pain and observe analgesic activity, after a week of oral dosing of Methanolic extracts of seeds of Cuminum Cyminum (L) and Centratherum anthelminticum (L) in mice. Methanolic extracts of Cuminum Cyminum (L) and Centratherum anthelminticum (L) were insoluble in water so Dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) i.e. an organic solvent was used in this study (it is used for solutes that are insoluble in water). The methanolic extracts of Cuminum cyminum(L), Centratherum anthelminticum (L) and DMSO (dim- ethyl sulphoxide) were administered orally to three groups of mice for a week and on 7th day of dosing analgesic activity was tested through tail flick test, response is checked after 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180 and 240 minutes of 7th day of dosing.
 Results: The group of mice, which were given Methanolic extract of Cuminum cyminum(L)showed highly significant analgesic activity after 60, 90, 120, 150, 180 and 240 minutes of dosing. The group of mice which was given Methanolic extract of Centratherum anthelminticum (L) showed significant analgesic activ- ity after 60, 90, 120, 150, 180 andhighly significant analgesic activity after 240 min. of dosing on 7th day.
 Conclusion: The results indicate that both extracts of Cuminum Cyminum (L) and Centratherum anthelminticum (L)showed analgesic activity. On comparison Cuminum Cyminum (L) have more supe- rior analgesic potential than Centratherum anthelminticum (L).

Introduction: Severe hypophosphataemia may occur in long distance runners presenting to Accident & Emergency (A&E) department with exertional heat illness. Case presentation: A 46-year-old man who collapsed in half marathon race was found to have raised body temperature (38.8°C) and confused with memory loss in the Accident & Emergency department. His amnesia was persistent even after his body temperature was normalized. He was found to have severe hypophosphataemia (0.21 mmol/L; reference range: 0.74 - 1.4 mmol/L). He had a neurological recovery after phosphate replacement. Another 45-year-old female half marathon runner was found to have moderate hypophosphataemia (0.5 mmol/L) co-presenting with exertional heat illness. Discussion: Moderate to severe hypophosphataemia complicated the clinical picture of the two cases presented with exertional heat illness. Causes of hypophosphataemia in runners are multifactorial. Conclusion: Emergency physician should be alert of profound hypophosphataemia as a complication in heat exertional illness.

Vahl) roots extract on the reproductive system of mice (Mus musculus L.) female Swiss Webster organogenesis during pregnancy.The method used in this study is the method of extraction and examination of vaginal smears.. The experiment was conducted in August-December 2010, at the Laboratory of Zoology, Department of Biology Cenderawasih University, Jayapura. The Experiment was carried out by dividing the 20 female mice into 4 groups. One group is a control group and with no treatmen and the other 3 groups were tretaed with oral treatments.. The results obtained in the qualitative descriptive analysis. It could be concluded that ethanol extract of jarong (Stachytarpheta jamaicensis (L.) Vahl) roots cause of accidental poisoning in mice, embryotoxic and causes the effects of teratogens. Key words: Jarong (Stachytarpheta jamaicensis (L.)
