Step 7 is the final step in the Make Arts process. It includes suggestions for promoting continual creativity within communities and for celebrating both new and older arts forms. It describes results-based management (RBM) and demonstrates how to create arts-related results chains. The focus, however, is not so much in providing a new set of activities, but in urging readers to continue applying all seven of the Make Arts steps. Embedding the Make Arts cycle in community life will result in the best chance for better lives to continue to emerge and endure. This section also includes a case study and discussion highlighting the potentially devastating effects of cultural and musical change within communities. Step 7 concludes with final thoughts from the authors about the Guide and the impact they hope it will have on arts advocates and arts work.

This chapter describes the 12 component tools of ARC within three stages of the ARC model. The first stage of collaboration focuses on ARC component tools for relationship, network, and leadership development. These tools establish the foundational relationships and conceptual development of leaders necessary to begin ARC’s second stage. In the participation stage, component tools such as team building, participatory decision making, and feedback (as well as others) are introduced to illustrate how ARC builds effective teams that apply ARC tools to improve services quality. Innovation represents the third stage as ARC participants employ the tools in a continuous improvement process to eliminate barriers to effective services, drive job redesign, and assure stabilization for sustainable improvement.

This chapter focuses on Kernis's music in the years 1995–2001. In 1995, the American Academy of Arts and Letters honored Kernis with a $7,500 prize to facilitate a recording. During the following five years, Kernis would continue down the “road of excess,” churning out new works at a prodigious rate. In the summer of 1995, Kernis appeared for the first time as one of the featured composers at the Cabrillo Music Festival in Santa Cruz, California—a two-week contemporary music extravaganza held annually since 1963. Commissions also added to Kernis's increasing renown—he received one in August 1995 from the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra for an arrangement of piano music, another in September from the Birmingham Bach Choir for a short choral work, and a third in October from the Chicago Symphony for a choral symphony. Meanwhile, Kernis was frantically working on the Double Concerto for Violin and Guitar, which continued to give him trouble.

In this chapter, Mahbub ul Haq points out the economic schisms in South Asia and the need to move away from arms security to human security in the region. This was a time when people were starving, poverty and inequality was rampant yet modern arms continued to accumulate. Haq points out that South Asia was the only region in the world where military expenditures had continued to rise even after the end of the cold war. The human cost of military confrontation between India and Pakistan had become prohibitive. For Haq, South Asia needed to move away from the dark shadows of military confrontation and turn its policy attention to issues of human security.

This chapter continues the examination of how martial arts differ from violence by delving into the symbolism attached to sport fighting. Here, this section investigates the significance of seemingly small gestures such as handshakes and fist bumps, treating them as play markers that separate the mat or the ring from the outside world. The rich symbolism of play markers run alongside an inversion of the meaning attached to strikes: in the outside world a punch devalues, whereas in sport fighting it signals respect for an opponent’s abilities. In this sense, sport fighting differentiates but also walks a fine line between the form and the function of violence. This consideration of significance in martial arts practice includes an investigation of martial arts and combat sport’s vexed relationship to real violence.

The third chapter brings the mixed media of the BAM and the 21st century together as Crawford shows that black art, after the Black Arts Movement, continues to create an alternative way of approaching art as process, not as object. The first part of this chapter shapes this process-oriented counter-literacy around the Black Arts Movement textual productions of the black book as the open book. She explores the openness of word and image texts and argues that they produce the lack of closure of black post-blackness. Through the text paintings of Glenn Ligon and the word and image books of Amiri Baraka, June Jordan, John Keene, Christopher Stackhouse, and others, this chapter unveils the unbound nature of mixed media as one of the most innovative legacies of the Black Arts Movement.

The book “Arca Project: Solidarity strengthening dreams and hopes in Altaneira-Ceará” describes the history of two Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), known as Associação Raízes Culturais de Altaneira (ARCA) and Fundação Educativa e Cultural Arca (Fundação Arca), linked especially by the spirit of solidarity. While the Association, formed mainly by family farmers, works with income generation and solidarity economy projects, the Arca Foundation develops projects in line with local and regional education and culture. The work begins by portraying the path of Carlos Alberto Tolovi in a social project of struggle for housing in an old favela that was located near the center of São Paulo, when he served as a seminarian and also as a priest, trying to show how much this his path contributed to the formation of the Arca Project. After describing how ARCA has established, the author continues to present the evolution of the work carried out by the Association and the context that subsequently led to the creation of the Arca Foundation. The narrative of the history of these two non-profit entities, known together as Projeto Arca, refers to the discussion of key concepts that inspire collective work, the questioning of the reality of social injustices and inequalities that characterize capitalist society and represents the hope of a culture, where the dignity of human life and social relations are more important than the economic one, aimed mainly at maximizing individual profit.

Antimicrobial resistance started to become a human health issue in the 1940s, following the discovery of the first antibiotics. The golden age of antibiotics (the 1950s through 1970s) marked the beginning of the arms race between humans and bacteria. Antimicrobial resistance is now among the greatest threats to human health; occurring in every region of the world and with the potential to affect anyone, anywhere. We describe the main mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, as well as how the bacteria evolve into “superbugs.” We detail the role of human activities on the emergence and spread of highly drug-resistant bacteria. Currently, data to identify the specific causes, and to establish the baseline in low-income countries, are lacking. Because of the continual increase of multidrug resistance, the situation is urgent. The chapter ends with a view to the future, with a discussion of the specific problems of low-income countries and initiatives taken.

Conceived as the meanings that individuals attach to their selves, a substantial stockpile of identities-related theorizing, accumulated across the arts, social sciences and humanities over many decades, continues to nourish contemporary research on self-identities in organizations. Moreover, in times which are more reflexive, narcissistic and liquid the identities of participants in organizations are increasingly less fixed, less secure and less certain, making identities issues both more salient and more interesting. Particular attention has focused on processes of identity construction (often styled ‘identity work’), how, why and when such processes occur, and their implications for organizing and individual, group and organizational outcomes. This has resulted in a burgeoning stream of research from discursive, dramaturgical, symbolic, socio-cognitive, and psychodynamic perspectives that (most often) casts individualsâ efforts to fabricate identities as intentional, relational, and consequential. Seemingly intractable debates centred on the nature of identities â their relative stability/fluidity, whether they are best regarded as coherent or fractured, positive (or not) and how they are fabricated within relations of power â combined with other conceptual issues, continue to invigorate the field, but have led also to some scepticism regarding the future potential of identities research. As the chapters in this handbook demonstrate, however, there are considerable grounds for optimism that identity, as root metaphor, nexus concept and means to bridge levels of analysis, has significant generative utility for multiple streams of theorizing in organization and management studies.

This introductory chapter provides a short history of medical humanities and continues on to give an overview of the limits of medical practice, evidence-based medicine (EBM), successes and failures, curricula, and the current state of medical humanities. The medical and health humanities have become a widespread discipline, with journals, institutes, and associations worldwide. Throughout undergraduate medical education, new courses, electives, programs, and research are proliferating. Yet there is very little officially documented about relevance and efficacy in postgraduate medical education. The chapters that follow provide both a rigorous argument for using the arts and humanities in postgraduate medical education and a practical “how-to” that will guide readers in developing arts and humanities initiatives in their own program or medical school. Each chapter provides ideas, hands-on lesson plans, and resources to pave the way forward.

Abstract From Law and Literature to Legality and Affect represents a sustained argument for the continued vitality of Law and Literature. It argues that the traditional methods of Law and Literature can be combined with work in critical media studies, affect theory, and cultural narratology to address topics such as ethnonationalism, anti-immigration sentiments, and systemic racism in nations like Germany and the United States. Taking stock of the pluralization and diversification of the field at 50 years from a comparative standpoint, the book understands Law and Literature as a political project. This has a precedence in inaugural Law and Literature texts like Jacob Grimm’s Von der Poesie im Recht (On the Poetry in Law) from 1815/16, which imagines an alternative legal order grounded in the unity of law, poetic language, and feeling. The political thrust of Law and Literature continues up into the present with the arts of BlackLivesMatter documenting and resisting police violence against Black people. Law and Literature offers keys for understanding how legal identities are constructed, for analyzing how legal texts are formally constructed, and for comprehending how cultural-legal issues are mediated using affective means. Using cultural, medial, affect theoretical and narrative analyses of law, a revitalized Law and Literature offers a set of methods and theories with which to address the most pressing current issues.

This chapter focuses on literary artists—that is, novelists, poets, and playwrights—who have shown fascination with Baruch Spinoza’s philosophy. The fictionalization of Spinoza’s life begins during the Enlightenment period and continues until today. The multifaceted literary attraction to Spinoza becomes only more remarkable when one considers how little it was reciprocated. For all the attention that literary artists have paid to Spinoza, he appears to have accorded little thought to the arts. This chapter first examines why Spinoza has paid little attention to the arts before turning to literary figures who have made Spinoza the central character of their work, including Gotthold Lessing, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Hölderlin, Novalis, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, Heinrich Heine, Matthew Arnold, Herman Melville, George Eliot, Jorge Luis Borges, Zbigniew Herbert, Eugene Ostashevsky, Goce Smilevski, and Isaac Bashevis Singer. It concludes by discussing how compatible literary Spinoza is with philosophical Spinoza.
