Abstract (sommario):
This thesis considers Max Dupain (1911-1992) and his contribution to the development of architectural photography in Australia. Through his continuous and prolific output over six decades of professional photography Dupain greatly stimulated awareness of and interest in Australian architecture. Before Dupain began specialising in the field, little consistent professional architectural photography had been practised in Australia. He and some of his close associates subsequently developed architectural photography as both a specialised branch of photography and - perhaps more significantly - as a necessary adjunct to architectural practice. In achieving these dual accomplishments, Dupain and like-minded practitioners succeeded in elevating architectural photography to the status of a discipline in its own right. They also gave Australians generally a deeper understanding of the heritage represented by the nation's built environment. At the same time, some of the photographic images he created became firmly fixed in the public imagination as historical icons within the development of a distinctive Australian tradition in the visual arts. Within his chosen field Dupain was the dominant Australian figure of his time. He was instrumental in breaking the link with Pictorialism by bringing Modernist and Documentary perspectives to Australian architectural photography. He was an innovator in the earlier decades of his professional career, however, his photographic techniques and practice did not develop beyond that. By the end of the 1980s he had largely lost touch with the technology and techniques of contemporary practice. Dupain's reputation, which has continued growing since his death in 1992, therefore arises from reasons other than his photographic images alone. It reflects his accomplishment in raising his fellow citizens' awareness of a worthwhile home-grown artistic tradition.

This thesis begins with an enquiry into the way the house is the physical expression of interacting cultural factors. Despite views emphasizing the determinant influence of culture on the house form, an investigation of the literature on architectural sociology reveals that, in the contemporary development of the built environment, the relationship between house form and human behaviour and/or activities, as manifestation of the users’ cultural needs, was treated as secondary. This study provides a conceptual framework based on cross-cultural studies and architectural sociology to understand how first generation Italian migrants in Brisbane have influenced the form of a specific typology of dwelling, the archetypal ‘house on a quarter-acre block’, in the post WWII period, in response to cultural needs. Qualitative data collected from the testimonies of Italian migrants in conjunction with evidence left from four houses, were analysed to answer the research question: in what ways did Italian migrants influence the form of their houses built in Brisbane in the post WWII period, and what were the forces behind, and outcomes of, this influence? The findings revealed that the architectural form of the house is influenced by the need to continue architectural traditions. The spatial form of Italian houses was influenced by sociocultural factors and urbanization patterns. These are the lack of public urban spaces like a town square traditionally utilized by Italian migrants in their native built environment for performing social activities. This insight means that migration to another land represents a fundamental disruption of social activities and, in this regard, the spatial form of the house could be conceptualised as a means of re-establishing and enhancing social interactions.

An exploratory design project is used as a vehicle to understand and identify approaches towards the notion of "place" and more precisely "visiting a place". The inquiry begins from the design challenge of an architectural competition for the design of a visitors' center in Sydney Australia. The international design competition set by AlA, ASCA and DuPont Glass Industry, is asking for a building, addressed to visitors of Sydney, that represents the "Australian culture" and can provide general information on ways to explore the continent. The design exploration navigates through several descriptions and approaches, on the city and the continent, conducted by a variety of intellectuals, writers, reporters, and Architects. The hints collected, enrich the design diary, and formulate the design process. "Transparency" is therefore used both as a means of looking through design as a tool of communication, research and representation, as well as a structural demand set by the competition. The design artifact navigates the design process towards the formulation of a specific proposal answering the primary demands; nevertheless in the research the focus is given on the experience of processing the design problem. Structured in a series of episodes, the design diary that follows, incorporates the research into a series of manifested notes on the issue of architectural conception. Diagrams and drawings representing several stages of the design evolution, are combined with the manifested theoretical points, and arguments in the form of parallel stories.

[Truncated abstract] I have evaluated the effects of different types of ephemeral pools on the evolutionary dynamics of two large branchiopods in Australia, the clam shrimp Lynceus and the fairy shrimp Branchinella longirostris. Both shrimps are passive dispersers, relying on their sexually produced resting eggs for continuity of populations in time and space, although their actual dispersal ability remains speculative. The two currently recognised species of the genus Lynceus (L. tatei and L. macleyanus) are widespread across Australia, and they occupy a wide range of ephemeral fresh water habitats, while the fairy shrimp Branchinella longirostris is endemic to rock pools on granite outcrops in south-western Australia. Samples of populations were collected from a total of 96 ephemeral pools at 80 locations in New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia . . . This highlighted the contrast between the two species and their microhabitats, and implied that these microhabitats offered different opportunities for dispersal. These were identified as frequent disturbances of the clam shrimp’s egg-banks due to ‘wash-out’ effects during heavy rains and animal and human vectors attracted by the water stored in the deep pools. My comparative study shows that the difference in evolutionary dynamics observed between the two species was a consequence of their environmental interactions rather than of the microhabitats themselves. Similar to patterns detected in other passive dispersers with disjunct population distribution, evolutionary dynamics in Lynceus and B. longirostris seem to be a result of complex interactions among gene flow, population histories and ecology of their habitat. The results contribute to the emerging evidence that branchiopod crustaceans are poor dispersers and highlight the importance of local context in determining evolutionary processes within species.

‘Frendin Architecture – A project on the practice of an architect’ uses the realm of architectural design to engage with the design of architectural practice. With only a limited network of contacts and practical experience, without commissions in the pipeline or a portfolio of works, this project approaches the city as a site for architectural office and explores strategies for establishing an architect’s practice.  At the core of the thesis is a belief that a viable strategy for establishing a practice is to locate a potential within a given area, unlock that potential within a given site and position a practice at the heart of the potential with which we wish to engage. This statement translates into three key strategies of the practice that have been explored in the threefold structure of the project: firstly, as participants in and builders of society, to live, work and build locally; secondly, to appeal to a common condition by working within the framework of a typology; and thirdly, to initiate projects on a small scale and as an enlightened architectural developer as a means of establishing trust and generating clients. As such, with the main objective to design an architectural practice, the initial stages of the project aimed to formulate a series of strategies for establishing, operating and marketing an architectural practice, these strategies and the speculative process of the project were developed then within the context of a given area and the framework of a typology.
‘Frendin Arkitektur - Ett projekt om en arkitekts praktik’ använder arkitektonisk design för att designa en arkitekts praktik. Med endast ett begränsat nätverk av kontakter och praktisk erfarenhet, utan uppdrag i sikte eller en portfölj av byggt arbete, angriper detta projekt staden som en plats för en arkitekt byrå och utforskar strategier för att etablera en arkitekts praktik. I grunden till avhandlingen ligger en tro på att en hållbar strategi för att etablera en praktik är att finna en potential inom ett visst område, låsa upp denna potential inom en given plats och etablera en arkitekt byrå i hjärtat av den potential som vi önskar arbeta med. Detta uttalande leder till tre viktiga strategier som har undersökts i den trefaldiga strukturen för projektet: för det första, att som deltagare i och konstruktörer av samhället, att leva, arbeta och bygga lokalt; för det andra, att vädja till en allmän situation genom att arbeta inom ramen av en typologi; och för det tredje, att som en medveten arkitektonisk fastighets utvecklare initiera projekt i liten skala - som ett sätt att skapa förtroende, generera kunder och ett generellt intresse inom det bredare samhället. Includes bibliographical references (p. 233-251) An examination of some texts influential in the discourse of Australian architecture in the twentieth century. Explores from a feminist standpoint the gendered nature of discourse in contemporary Western architecture from an Australian perspective. The starting point for the thesis was an examination of Australian architectual discourse in search of some explanation for the continuing low numbers of women practitioners in Australia. Hypothesizes that contemporary Western architecture is imbued with a pervasive and dominant masculinity and that this is deeply imbedded in its discursive constructions: the body housed by architecture is assume to be male, the mind which produces architecture is assumed to be masculine. Given the cultural location of Australian architecture as a marginal participant in the wider arena of contemporary Western / international discourses, focuses on writing about two iconic figues in Western architecture; Le Corbusier, of international reknown; and, Glenn Murcutt, of predominantly local significance.

Architect and soldier Sir J.J. Talbot Hobbs was born on 24 August 1864 in London. After migrating from England to Western Australia in the late 1880s, Hobbs designed many buildings that were constructed in Perth, Fremantle, and regional areas of the State. Although Talbot Hobbs has previously been recognised as a significant and influential contributor to architecture in Australia, his development as an architect has not been documented, nor has his design output undergone critical analysis. A number of problems confront attempts to interpret Hobbs' contribution to architecture. One is that a number of his most prominent building designs have been demolished. Another is that national recognition for his achievements as a First World War Army General have overshadowed his extraordinarily productive pre and post-war career as an architect. Military service was intrinsic to his character, and thus is woven in to this architectural biography. The thesis examines Hobbs' life and work, filling the gap in documented evidence of his contributions, and fitting it within the context of Australian architectural and social history. The main proposition to be tested is whether Hobbs' Australian architecture, of English derivation, combined with vast community service, warrants his recognition as an architect and citizen of national significance. Completely new important issues, information, discussion and facts that have resulted from the research for this thesis are: 1. Biographical knowledge about Hobbs' life – including his upbringing, education and training in England, and his fifty years of comprehensive work and community service in and for Australia; 2. The elucidation of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century architectural issues that were relevant to Hobbs and other architects in Western Australia; 3. Examination of the important works of Hobbs' architect predecessors and contemporaries in Perth, and the setting of his own work within this context; 4. Revelation of his primary and pivotal role in war memorial design and organisational work for the far-flung theatres of Australian Army conflicts and selected personal design works within Australia itself during 1919-38; and 5. A chronology and summary of Hobbs' life, with thorough documentation of his output as a sole practitioner in the period 1887-1904 by development of a detailed web-based database - an extremely valuable tool for future researchers.

The High Court of Australia is a seminal work of architecture, recognised nationally after twenty-five years by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects 'Enduring Architecture' award, and internationally, as one of only ten Australian buildings registered on the Union of International Architects 'Architectural Heritage of the 20th Century'. Since its construction in 1980, the design of the High Court has been consistently ascribed to the architect Colin Madigan – a director of the firm Edwards Madigan Torzillo and Briggs. It is said to embody a 'unity of concept' with Madigan's National Gallery, and to accord with 'universal' principles, geometric 'design laws' and the 'craft-based attitude' of 'Madigan's architecture'. Such sustained references have effectively established a dominant and institutionally sanctioned narrative. A body of other acclaimed work produced by the firm is similarly construed as Madigan's oeuvre. In fact, the design of the High Court resulted from a national competition held between 1972 and 1973. Documented evidence credits its 'Design Team' and identifies architect Christopher Kringas as the 'Director in Charge'. The stated 'Design Concept' does not mention universal principles or geometric laws, nor does the High Court's architectonic design accord with such descriptors. Kringas's design role is further evident in the firm's most significant work. This thesis traces and critically reviews the prevailing narrative of the design of the High Court. Behind-the-scenes correspondence, original archives and oral histories expose machinations around its authorship and build a counter-narrative that re-contextualises the High Court according to Brutalist ideology, nation building agendas, individual agency and design experimentation, crystallised by an architectural competition. An alternate reading of the High Court design is developed, pointing to a radicalisation and shift of the Brutalist agenda, and salient innovations previously unexamined.

Constructed Isolation investigates the development of a collection of architectural devices and operations that respond to and have evolved from the specific nature of residential suburban Perth, Western Australia. These devices explore the potential for ambiguity to create space that transforms the occupant from being a passive observer into a dynamic participant. It collates a collection of projects by iredale pedersen hook architects and examines the devices under the thematic concerns of geometry, place, time and craft. The Masters Thesis identifies the potential for Perth's geographic isolation to manifest as a positive construct, developing a unique architecture that opportunistically reinterprets past traditions to create individual environments. 'Constructed Isolation' is an ambitious idea where identity may begin with the individual dwelling and collectively evolve to create a constellation of considerable influence. It demonstrates how these devices may result in new propositions for suburbia, how big ideas with small-scale projects and a little irrational joyousness may contribute to or at least aspire to create change. These small projects will be viewed as a continuation of Perth's 'Heroic Period of Modernism', the fertile and ambitious but incomplete project from the 1950s and '60s. This will also focus on the development and change that occurred as a result of the reflective practice process, while identifying potential opportunities for the future.

Country and First Nations cultures in Australia are continually gaining interest in the wider community. In the architectural profession, recent discourse that has focused on Indigenous issues is occurring in a pre-dominantly non-Indigenous environment. These discussions have highlighted the need for more in-depth conversations that encompass conceptual frameworks relevant to First Nations cultures. I argue that the profession can further engage with, acknowledge and understand Country and culture, its interactions with colonialism and actions of reciprocity. I explore the concept of a Third Space (after Homi Bhabha), as the main proposition in this thesis based on the overarching notion that Country is always giving to all of us. Framing thinking in this way can affect change and allow the profession to engage with cultural differences by meaningfully giving and receiving in spaces between beings—realms, ideological doctrines, cultures, communities, individuals, living and non-living entities—that are always part of Country. These spaces are, collectively, here considered as a Third Space. This thesis presents the relational, translational and transformational qualities of a Third Space. This can inform ways of thinking that link architecture and cross-cultural engagement with placemaking in contemporary settings, deep time living practices and colonial interventions on the Australian continent between beings. Investigations of contemporary placemaking in Hyde Park, Sydney, the ancient designed environments of Lake Mungo and the incorporation of cultural narratives at the University of Sydney are underpinned by the notion that placemaking has always occurred on this continent and has always engaged with beings constitutive of Country. Analysis of these case studies, framed thematically in each chapter, leads to the proposition that thinking behind placemaking gives back to Country as gifts with distinct qualities and narratives to focus and inform architectural design philosophies and engagement practices. The thesis shows how this can enable reciprocal actions between engaged beings within the interstitial void of a Third Space. Reciprocity in thinking—giving back—informs more nuanced and inclusive approaches to architecture and placemaking as always becoming part of Country.

Summary: This research proposes a new site analysis methodology in the form of an integrated framework. The framework separates the site analysis process into different models, incorporates each model, and considers the interaction between them. The most important models are the environmental models (climate, geology, hydrology, topography, and vegetation models), social-cultural models, economic models, and infrastructure models. Each model also contains several important factors.The study identifies and organizes environmental factors within the framework that influence site analysis and design. Based on the applicability of feng shui principles and their interpretations into measurable factors, this research compares and incorporates feng shui and contemporary environmental design theories, and summarizes essential environmental factors. The emphasis on environmental factors from these models may lead to a better understanding of the relationships between humankind and the natural environment.

This thesis is an investigation into the use of defensive architectural techniques by civilian settlers in frontier South Australia and the Northern Territory between 1847 and 1885. By focussing specifically on the civilian use of defensive architecture, this study opens a new approach to the archaeological investigation and interpretation of Australian rural buildings, an approach that identifies defensive strategies as a feature of Australian frontier architecture. Four sites are analysed in this study area, three of which are located in South Australia and one in the Northern Territory. When first built, the structures investigated were not intended, or expected, to become what they did - their construction was simply the physical expression of the fear felt by some of the colonial settlers of Australia. Over time, however, the stories attached to these structures have come to play a significant part in Australia’s frontier mythology. These structures represent physical manifestations of settler fear and Aboriginal resistance. Essentially fortified homesteads, they comprise a body of material evidence previously overlooked and unacknowledged in Australian archaeology, yet they are highly significant in terms of what they can tell us about frontier conflict, in relation to the mindsets and experiences of the settlers who built them. This architecture also constitutes material evidence of a vanguard of Australian colonisation (or invasion) being carried out, not by the military or police, but by civilian settlers. v Apart from this, these structures play a part in the popular mythology of Australia’s colonial past. All of these structures have a myth associated with them, describing them as having been built for defence against Aboriginal attack. These myths are analysed in terms of why they came into existence, why they have survived, and what role they play in the construction of Australia’s national identity. Drawn from, and substantiated through, the material evidence of the homesteads, these myths are one component of a wider body of myths which serve the ideological needs of the settler society through justifying its presence by portraying the settlers as victims of Aboriginal aggression.

Please see the pdf version of this abstract for an accurate representation.] The 3.24 Ga Panorama VMS District, located in the Pilbara Craton of Western Australia, is exposed as a cross-section through subvolcanic granite intrusions and a coeval submarine volcanic sequence that hosts Zn-Cu mineralization. The near-complete exposure across the district, the very low metamorphic grade, and the remarkable preservation of primary igneous and volcanic textures provides an unparalleled opportunity to examine the P-T-X-source evolution of a VMS ore-forming system and to assess the role of the subvolcanic intrusions as heat sources and/or metal contributors to the overlying VMS hydrothermal system. Detailed mapping of the Panorama VMS District has revealed seven major vein types related to the VMS hydrothermal system or to the subvolcanic intrusions. (1) Quartz-chalcopyrite veins, hosted in granophyric granite immediately beneath the granite-volcanic contact, formed prior to main stage VMS hydrothermal convection, and were precipitated from mixed H2OCO 2-NaCl-KCl fluids with variable salinities (2.5 to 8.5 wt% NaCl equiv). (2) Quartz-sericite veins, ubiquitous across the top 50m of the volcanic sequence, were formed from an Archean seawater with a salinity of 9.7 to 11.2 wt% NaCl equiv at temperatures of 90° to 135°C. These veins formed synchronous with the regional feldspar-sericite-quartz-ankerite alteration during seawater recharge into the main stage VMS hydrothermal convection cells. (3) Quartz-pyrite veins hosted in granophyric granite, and (4) quartz-carbonate-pyrite veins hosted in andesitebasalt, also formed from relatively unevolved Archean seawater (5.5 to 10.1 wt% NaCl equiv; 150° to 225°C), but during the collapse of the VMS hydrothermal system when cool, unmodified seawater invaded the top of the subvolcanic intrusions. (5) Quartz-topaz-muscovite greisen, (6) quartz-chlorite-chalcopyrite vein greisen, and (7) hydrothermal Cu-Zn-Sn veins are hosted in the subvolcanic intrusions. Primary H2O-NaCl-CaCl2 fluid inclusions in the vein greisens were complex high temperature hypersaline inclusions (up to 590°C and up to 56 wt% NaCl equiv). The H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions in the Cu-Zn-Sn veins have variable salinities, ranging from 4.9 to 14.1 wt% NaCl equiv, and homogenization temperatures ranging from 160° to 325°C. The hydrothermal quartz veins and magmatic metasomatic phases in the subvolcanic intrusions were formed from a magmatic-hydrothermal fluid that had evolved through wallrock reactions, cooling, and finally mixing with seawater-derived VMS hydrothermal fluids.

Detailed facies analysis and sequence stratigraphic principles applied to outcrop and subsurface data have aided in the development of a reservoir geological model for the Pacoota P3B Unit at the Mereenie Field, Central Australia. Mereenie is a linear Northwest/southeast trending oil and gas field 4 km wide and 35 km long, and covers an area of approximately 130 km2. In this field, oil and gas are produced from some of the oldest known petroleum reservoirs in the word: reservoirs approximately 500Ma. The Ordovician Pacoota P3B Unit, is part of an overall transgressive succession which records the transition from non-marine to marine environments in the northeastern margin of the Amadeus Basin. This transgression was punctuated by episodic events of rapid sea level rise and periods of sea level fall. The resulting vertical succession consists of three Fourth-order deltaic sequences formed by the regular alternation of sand-prone, non-marine sediments with marine mud/sand-prone deposits that prograded northeast as the basin subsided. Unlike previous investigations, this study recognizes four distinct types of sandstone facies associations within the broad braid delta system that characterizes the Pacoota P3B Unit. Facies Association 1 records the depositional characteristics of a distal braid plain that was dominated by episodic sheetflood events. Facies Association 2 reflects a sudden change in fluvial style from fine-grained sheetflood lobes to a coarse to pebbly-grained braid-delta system during a short-lived regressive phase. With time, this basal braid-delta system evolved into a tide-influenced braid plain indicating a transgressive phase. Facies Association 3 records the abrupt change from fluvial to tidal processes. This association is interpreted as the product of a tide-dominated delta front that prograded northeast. The palaeoenvironment of Facies Association 4 is interpreted as the fill of a wide incised fluvial valley system, which marked the end of fluvial sedimentation at the margin of the Amadeus Basin during the Ordovician. This association is capped by the transgressive marine deposits of the Pacoota P3A Unit. These four facies associations represent a complex network of depositional environments that results from the deposition of superimposed sandy, deltaic systems affected by tidal currents. The vertical facies evolution is punctuated by erosional sequence boundaries. The development of a detailed stratigraphic framework allows the Pacoota P3B Unit to be subdivided into five correlative intervals that define reservoir compartments in the Mereenie Field. These reservoir compartments are bounded by key stratigraphic surfaces and represent the lowstand (LST), transgressive (I'ST) and highstand (HST) systems tracts of the Fourth-order sequences defined within the P3B Unit. Maximum reservoir quality is associated with amalgamated fluvial sandstones that define the LST of each sequence. Marginal to impermeable reservoir characteristics occur within the tidally-influenced TST and HST. From base to top reservoir intervals are: P3-250, P3-230, P3-190, P3-150 and P3-120/130. Of these, the lowstand P3-120/130, P3-230 and P3-250 Reservoir Intervals are the most prolific producers. The transgressive to highstand P3-150 and P3-190 Reservoir Intervals are considered as not economically profitable for hydrocarbon exploitation. Petrophysical characterization of lithofacies types observed in the succession indicate that within each compartment, depositional facies exert the primary control on reservoir properties. Flow units are associated with tabular, cross-bedded sandstones. Permeability barriers are associated with bidirectional cross-beds, parallellaminated sandstones, soft-sediment deformed sandstones and bioturbated beds. During transgression the upper part of the lowstand fluvial system was sheared off resulting in a transgressive surface capping the fluvial deposits. Reworked fluvial sediments were redeposited as reversing tidal flows above the lowstand intervals. These deposits, interpreted as neap-spring tidal cycles, consist of alternating sand and silt/mud and bioturbated beds. In this setting, intense bioturbation generate sediment mixing destroying the reservoir properties of this interval. Additionally the areally continuous and impermeable silt/shale intervals of the tidal deposits contributed to the vertical barriers to flow in the reservoir. This study illustrates how facies analysis and high resolution sequence stratigraphy can be applied to improve reservoir characterization in fluvio-marine successions deposited before the existence of land vegetation. In the Mereenie Field, these concepts have been successfully applied to: i) recognize with confidence all correlative reservoir intervals and ·ii) identify, orientate and map the LST of the Fourth-order sequences which represent the major reservoir intervals of the P3B Unit.

Decoration holds a contested position in built environment scholarship. Largely marginalised by Modernist claims of material and structural integrity, decoration is often sidelined as the most temporal and superficial of built environment practices. A common misunderstanding is that decoration and interior design merely make built space fashionable. The thesis challenges the misconception of interior design as gratuitous embellishment, and demonstrates how a reconsideration of the term ‘decoration’ makes new insights available for both contemporary practice and scholarship in interior design. I contend that if decoration can be considered a vehicle through which ideas, such as the cultural veneration of appearances and the social motivations of fashion are explored, it can be understood as representative of contemporary cultural concerns.

Sedimentological analysis of cored sections within the Merrimelia Formation (basal Gidgealpa Group, Cooper Basin, South Australia) reveals a complex glacigenic environment, including glaciolacustrine, deltaic, shorezone, fluvial, aeolian and other associated terrestrial facies (over 20 different facies have been identified). These facies are observed within terminoglacial and proglacial environments and interfinger laterally and vertically constantly throughout the Merrimelia Formation, exhibiting rapid environment change related to the position of ice sheet. Detailed sedimentological and petrographical (Cubitt 1998) analysis suggests that Tirrawarra sandstone-type sandstones facies belong within the Merrimelia depositional realm. Provenance data (Cubitt 1998) indicates that the lithic component of the Tirrawarra Sandstone (sensu stricto), is sourced from reworked Merrimelia coeval depositional facies. It is proposed that the fluvial sandstones of the Merrimelia Formation are part of the same fluvial deposystem as the Tirrawarra Sandstone (sensu stricto) as the two sandstone sequences are the natural progression of coarsening sediment as more detritus was released from melting glaciers during deglaciation. It is suggested that there no longer remain any sedimentological, stratigraphical or petrographical (Cubitt 1998) reasons why the Tirrawarra Sandstone (sensu stricto) and the Merrimelia Formation glaciofluvial sandstones should not be grouped together as Tirrawarra-type facies within the Merrimelia glacigenic domain. Facies architecture across the basin on both field and basin wide scales has identified two regional lacustrine episodes, both of which are followed by a period of lacustrine basin clastic infill. Such cycles represent ice advance and retreat, allowing two deglaciation phases and one ice advance phase to be identified.

This research investigates contemporary architecture's difficulty in distinguishing new civic buildings from commercial and other non-public building types. Historically, the desire to create a clear typological distinction for the civic has come and gone through periods of time and key practitioners. Through projects, the masters attempts to formulate strategies to speak of the civic in the contemporary condition. The research aims to consider architectural language and its use in the context of new public buildings to establish a sense of difference from dominant urban typologies, and be grounded within a contemporary reading of the civic. This project-based research features three principal resolved design projects - a Civic Centre in Mildura; Council Offices for the City of Hume, Broadmeadows; and a new 'civic school' in the Melbourne outer suburb of Mill Park. The design process undertaken for each project is subject to investigation of selected precedents, both contemporary and historical, and these are explored through an illustrated written chapter.

This thesis presents a research study that investigated student learning in a mentor supported design office situation, using a cognitive apprenticeship learning approach that utilised authentic design project tusks. In this study, 29 final year Technical And Further Education (TAFE) building design students undertook authentic building design projects with expert building designers, who acted as mentors, in commercial design office situations. The mentors guided student learning by using a cognitive apprenticeship approach to learning, implemented with authentic design projects designed to replicate the everyday culture of practice activities typical of commercial design office operations. This study follows the progress of these students as they worked in collaboration with their mentors in the design and presentation of design solutions developed for the projects. Data about the students' learning experiences in this setting were collected and analysed to determine their learning outcomes, the kinds of knowledge acquired and the means through which knowledge was transferred in the study situation. A holistic interpretivistic approach was used to collect data in three phases. The first of these was a pilot-study with the other two phases providing the main data gathering parts of the study. Much of the focus of the third phase of this study was on verifying findings emergent from analysis of data collected in the first two phases, as well as seeking greater understanding of the study phenomena. Throughout each of the three phases, data were collected from multiple sources, which included interviews, direct observations, personal journals and drawings. Analysis of the data showed that using cognitive apprenticeship learning methods organised around mentor supported authentic projects implemented in authentic commercial design office situations provided successful transfer of declarative, tacit and procedural knowledge from the mentor to the students. This thesis concludes with recommendations for the classroom application of cognitive apprenticeship learning methods, as used by the expert building designers who participated in this research.

The thesis studies the role of the European modem architect, the Dutchman Willem Marinus Dudok, in the dissemination of certain aspects of the concepts of architectural modernism in Australia from 1930 to the mid-1950s, and examines the manner in which his works and ideas were actually transferred. The thesis establishes the significance of Dudok's role in the Australian architectural context. An introductory discussion of European architectural modernism is presented so that Dudok's position can be understood in relation to it. This is followed by an examination of Dudok's professional life and architectural works. His buildings are analysed according to general principles and specific characteristics, all of which are illustrated by examples. Dudok's standing as an important modem architect is supported by a study of his relationship to European modern architecture, including prior and contemporary Dutch architecture. The connections between Dudok and Frank Lloyd Wright and their respective architectures are briefly investigated. Australian modernism is discussed in broad terms to establish the cultural context within which modem architecture evolved in that country. The development of modem architecture is described by examining the architectural debate conducted at the time of its emergence, and by an analysis of modern buildings. Architects, from both the public and private sectors, whose buildings demonstrate an understanding of the principles and Ill practice of modern architecture are identified and their work is examined for any evidence of Dudok's intluence. The thesis also examines the vehicles through which such Australian architects became aware of Dudok's architecture and demonstrates that these were many and diverse. Three significant means are identified: first, photographs of Dudok's architecture and articles about it in Australian and overseas professional and popular journals; second, the experiences of those Australian architects who travelled to the Netherlands specifically to look at Dudok's architecture; third, the awareness of his work that existed among Australian architects working in the United Kingdom. Of particular note was the role of the Architectural Association in London in informing Australian architects about Dudok. This thesis suggests that many modem buildings designed and built in Australia during the period 1930 to the mid-1950s displayed characteristics in their built form that can be directly sourced to Dudok's architecture. It concludes that Dudok had a widespread influence on modern buildings in Australia during the 1930s and 1940s, and his intluence remains evident in occasional buildings designed during the early 1950s.

A work of architecture holds the observations of the architect, an accumulation of images, feelings and sensations. These remain largely detached and invisible to the casual observer, occasionally becoming apparent as an idea is glimpsed through an external point of observation. The research has looked to redefine the paradigms of observation, that define the way architecture is seen and interpreted, by exploring attachments to places and belief systems. It has followed a journey within practice. Part of this journey has been about locating the aesthetic and metaphysical experience of architecture within its physical and operational realities. The research is an observation of the architect experiencing, as an observer, himself, his place in the world, and of the cities and spaces that occupy his imagination. By observing the interface between things that have defined career and identity, an architectural narrative has been developed to describe how an architect' s persona, what he lives through and the memories that he carries with him have been and can continue to be condensed into his work. Beauty resides in the interface between these things and ultimately, the fixed reality of the work. The search is characterised by the appearance of The Blue Room. It is a metaphorical place representing both the present and the un-created future. The Blue Room is a metaphor for all of the emotions that rest behind the evolution of an architectural idea and which remain embedded within it as a finished work. It is a metaphor for beauty and a metaphor for loss and sadness, all of the things that exist in-between the idea and the representation of that idea; between the visible and the invisible. It also represents the inherent paradox of the architectural work in that the idea is never the same as it is first imagined; in its finished form it is both the space of the architect and the client.

Edmund Blacket (1817-83) was an English-born Gothic Revival architect. This thesis uses the critical framework of medievalism to identify the function of multiple timeframes, real and imagined, within the Gothic style. It traces Blacket’s youth sketching Gothic ruins in the Yorkshire countryside, his construction of quintessentially English churches in the Colony of New South Wales, and his grand designs for the University of Sydney’s first buildings. This journey shows how Blacket’s use of the Gothic style spoke at once to a romanticised medieval past and the fragmented colonial present, as well as anticipating the Colony’s future.

The aim of the research was to explore whether criminal events and the physical arrangement of park settings influence the community’s perception of safety, and ultimately their usage of urban parks. Community perceptions of personal safety and park use were examined in urban park settings within a regional city of South East Queensland, using a 2 x 2 (reported crime incidents: high or low levels x park setting: inviting or uninviting) Factorial Design. Park settings were evaluated using Kaplan, Kaplan and Ryan’s (1998) eight patterns of fear and preference. A Pearson Productmoment correlation revealed that participant scores for perception of safety were independent to scores for park use. ANOVA revealed that there was a significant difference in participant scores for personal safety, between settings classified as either inviting or uninviting. The difference in participant scores for personal safety, between settings classified as experiencing either high or low levels of crime incidents, was not significant, with no interaction effect. ANOVA also revealed that while there was no significant difference in participant scores for park use between settings classified as inviting verses uninviting, or between settings classified as experiencing high levels verses low levels of reported crime incidents, there was however a significant interaction effect. When parks experience high levels of crime, reported park use was greater when the setting was inviting than uninviting. No gender or age differences were detected for any of the dependent variables. The research findings support previous research that found perceptions of personal safety are related to the physical characteristics of park settings, and also that park use and perceptions of safety are independent to crime incidents. The research demonstrates that while crime incidents may not have a significant influence, the physical characteristics of park settings play a very important role in promoting positive perceptions of safety within the community. The implications are that future design and management of park settings should consider Kaplan, Kaplan and Ryan’s (1998) eight patterns of fear and preference to promote positive perceptions of personal safety within the community.

Alkalic porphyry style Au-Cu deposits of the Cadia district are associated with Late-Ordovician monzonite intrusions, which were emplaced during the final phase of Macquarie Arc magmatism at the end of the Benambran Orogeny. N-striking faults, including the curviplanar, northerly striking, moderately west-dipping basement thrust faults of the Cadiangullong system, developed early in the district history. NE-striking faults formed during rifting in the late Silurian. Subsequent E-W directed Siluro- Devonian extension followed by regional E-W shortening during the Devonian Tabberabberan Orogeny dismembered these intrusions, thereby superposing different levels porphyry Au-Cu systems as well as the host stratigraphy. During the late Silurian, the partially exhumed porphyry systems were buried beneath the Waugoola Group sedimentary cover sequence, which is generally preserved in the footwall of the Cadiangullong thrust fault system. The Waugoola Group is a typical rift-sag sequence, deposited initially in local fault-bounded basins which then transitioned to a gradually shallowing marine environment as local topography was overwhelmed. Basin geometry was controlled by pre-existing basement structures, which were subsequently inverted during the Devonian Tabberabberan Orogeny, offsetting the unconformity by up to 300m vertically. In the Waugoola Group cover, this shortening was accommodated via a complex network of minor detachments that strike parallel to major underlying basement faults. For this reason, faults and folds measured at the surface in the sedimentary cover can be used as a predictive tool to infer basement structures at depth.

Mulka's Cave is a profusely decorated hollow boulder at The Humps, a large granite dome near Hyden, a small town 350 km southeast of Perth. The importance of the artwork has been recognised for 50 years. Test excavations in the cave in 1988 yielded 210 mainly quartz artefacts assignable to the Australian Small Tool phase and a radiocarbon date of 420 ± 50 BP from just below the lowest artefact found. The artwork was recorded in detail in 2004. The recorder considered the radiocarbon date to be 'anomalously young' because most of the artwork is in poor condition, suggesting that it was made 3000-2000 years ago. Other dated rock art sites in Southwestern Australia came into use 4000-3000 BP. The excavators argued that the site was fairly insignificant, while the rock art researcher thought the profusion of motifs (452) made it a site of some significance, particularly in Southwestern Australia. The main aim of this study was to investigate these conflicting claims by re-investigating how Mulka's Cave had been used by Aboriginal people in the archaeological past. This research became possible because local tourist organisations obtained federal funding to install an elevated walkway outside the cave in 2006. Under Section 18 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act (1972) 12 of the 34 postholes required were excavated and artefacts were collected from all the ground surfaces to be impacted. Subsequently, under Section 16 of the AHA, four, small, 0.5 x 0.5 m, testpits were excavated around the site: outside the cave entrance, on The Humps and in the Camping Area; a sheltered spot where the Traditional Owners had camped as children, with their grandparents. Organic material was scarce, so analysis focused on the numbers and types of stone artefacts recovered. The artefacts excavated in 1988 were also re-analysed. Five radiocarbon dates were obtained, which suggested that people began visiting the Camping Area (and using ochre) about 6500 BP, making Mulka's Cave one of the oldest radiometrically dated rock art sites in southern Western Australia. The artefact data from Mulka's Cave were compared to those from these sites. The low artefact discard rate and high proportion of retouched/formal tools found at Mulka's Cave may indicate that the site was used differently from the other sites, but the data are problematic. Most (70%) of the handstencils in Mulka's Cave can be attributed to adolescents, possibly boys, which may also suggest that the site had ceremonial significance; perhaps as a focus for male initiation rituals. The artefact data do not support this hypothesis, however. There is no evidence of spatial patterning in artefact type or frequency across the site, which would be expected if the cave had had a ritual function. Instead, the Camping Area, Walkway Area and Mulka's Cave itself seem to have been used similarly. It was concluded that, given the scarcity of free-standing potable water in the surrounding region and the presence at The Humps of two capacious gnammas (rockholes), that people probably visited the site when the gnammas were full. A wide variety of plant and animal foods would also have been available before the country was cleared for agriculture. When at Mulka's Cave, they may well have added to the corpus of rock art and carried out other ceremonial business, but there is no archaeological evidence for the latter. It was also concluded that much more research needs to be undertaken in this neglected part of the semi-arid zone before the significance of Mulka's Cave can be properly assessed and its place in the archaeological record of Southwestern Australia determined.

This thesis considers varied representations of landscape in Australian narrative film and designed landscape. Landscape is taken as an active concept that combines the associative meanings of place and the dynamism of space. Sixteen film and designed landscapes are examined to derive their landscape sources, forms and ideas, using the methodology of 'contextual poetics', Each of these landscapes is considered under a specific theme: landscape as delight, absence, nation or hope. In addition to detailing specific landscape responses by the designers of the examined landscapes, this project aims to contribute to an enhanced conversation about the effective, just practice of landscape architecture. The topic derives from a question central to landscape architectural practice in a post-colonial context, such as Australia. In a cultural setting where no single, agreed definition of landscape is allowed by the conditions of its history, which versions do practitioners of landscape architecture take up? What should be their limits, where are their inspirations and whose landscape narratives are ignored in these decisions?

Please see the pdf version for an accurate reproduction.] This thesis examines the water use, ecophysiology and hydraulic architecture of Eucalyptus marginata (jarrah) growing on bauxite mine rehabilitation sites in the jarrah forest of south-western Australia. The principal objective was to characterise the key environment and plant-based influences on tree water use, and to better understand the dynamics of water use over a range of spatial and temporal scales in this drought-prone ecosystem. A novel sap flow measurement system (based on the use of the heat pulse method) was developed so that a large number of trees could be monitored concurrently in the field. A validation experiment using potted jarrah saplings showed that rates of sap flow (transpiration) obtained using this system agreed with those obtained gravimetrically. Notably, diurnal patterns of transpiration were measured accurately and with precision using the newly developed heat ratio method. Field studies showed that water stress and water use by jarrah saplings on rehabilitation sites were strongly seasonal: being greatest in summer when it was warm and dry, and least in winter when it was cool and wet. At different times, water use was influenced by soil water availability, vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and plant hydraulic conductance. In some areas, there was evidence of a rapid decline in transpiration in response to dry soil conditions. At the end of summer, most saplings on rehabilitation sites were not water stressed, whereas water status in the forest was poor for small saplings but improved with increasing size. It has been recognised that mature jarrah trees avoid drought by having deep root systems, however, it appears that saplings on rehabilitation sites may have not yet developed functional deep roots, and as such, they may be heavily reliant on moisture stored in surface soil horizons. Simple predictive models of tree water use revealed that stand water use was 74 % of annual rainfall at a high density (leaf area index, LAI = 3.1), high rainfall (1200 mm yr-1) site, and 12 % of rainfall at a low density (LAI = 0.4), low rainfall (600 mm yr-1) site, and that water use increased with stand growth. A controlled field experiment confirmed that: (1) sapling transpiration was restricted as root-zone water availability declined, irrespective of VPD; (2) transpiration was correlated with VPD when water was abundant; and (3) transpiration was limited by soil-to-leaf hydraulic conductance when water was abundant and VPD was high (> 2 kPa). Specifically, transpiration was regulated by stomatal conductance. Large stomatal apertures could sustain high transpiration rates, but stomata were sensitive to hydraulic perturbations caused by soil water deficits and/or high evaporative demand. No other physiological mechanisms conferred immediate resistance to drought. Empirical observations were agreeably linked with a current theory suggesting that stomata regulate transpiration and plant water potential in order to prevent hydraulic dysfunction following a reduction in soil-to-leaf hydraulic conductance. Moreover, it was clear that plant hydraulic capacity determined the pattern and extent of stomatal regulation. Differences in hydraulic capacity across a gradient in water availability were a reflection of differences in root-to-leaf hydraulic conductance, and were possibly related to differences in xylem structure. Saplings on rehabilitation sites had greater hydraulic conductance (by 50 %) and greater leaf-specific rates of transpiration at the high rainfall site (1.5 kg m-2 day1) than at the low rainfall site (0.8 kg m-2 day1) under near optimal conditions. Also, rehabilitation-grown saplings had significantly greater leaf area, leaf area to sapwood area ratios and hydraulic conductance (by 30-50 %) compared to forest-grown saplings, a strong indication that soils in rehabilitation sites contained more water than soils in the forest. Results suggested that: (1) the hydraulic structure and function of saplings growing under the same climatic conditions was determined by soil water availability; (2) drought reduced stomatal conductance and transpiration by reducing whole-tree hydraulic conductance; and (3) saplings growing on open rehabilitation sites utilised more abundant water, light and nutrients than saplings growing in the forest understorey. These findings support a paradigm that trees evolve hydraulic equipment and physiological characteristics suited to the most efficient use of water from a particular spatial and temporal niche in the soil environment.

This thesis explores the nexus between landscape design processes and the conservation of wildlife diversity. Extinction of earth’s unique and diverse animal species is progressing at unprecedented rates, due to humanity’s profound alteration of the natural landscape. Scientific literature increasingly points towards opportunities in the urban and landscape design fields to this issue. Unfortunately, the science and needs of wildlife are rarely integrated in rigorous ways in the planning and design of human landscapes. This gap in professional practice protocols and regulatory frameworks in much of the western world is explored and raises questions about how design can successfully protect, restore, and even re-create viable habitat and linkages for wildlife that is integrated with human landscape. Australia has modeled new integrated wildlife-centric design approaches and projects there demonstrate accumulated expertise in the specific area of wildlife habitat design. Through a case study of Australia’s Alice Springs Desert Park, I argue that balancing human and wildlife needs at every step of the design and building process is necessary for successful wildlife habitat design. This integrated approach does not view wildlife and humans as independent, but rather as two interdependent habitat participants that must coexist to ensure the future of both.

This thesis demonstrates the use of geophysics to identify the hydrogeological structures and mechanisms responsible for the salinisation of land and water in three different case studies. In addition, it demonstrates the critical importance of the interpreted information products being relevant to the land managers and the management tools and strategies available to them. Three case studies are examined. The common requirement for each study area was the acquisition of detailed sub-surface information on the location of hydrogeological features that could not be interpreted from surface observations or obtained from isolated drill holes. The spatial coverage of the geophysical data is shown to be critical to the quality of location information produced. The interpretation of these data and presentation of information products in terms of the current management tools available to land managers are shown to be essential for successful and cost effective adoption.At Broomehill, the geophysical and other data were interpreted to produce information products that indicated the location of salt stores, sources of water, mechanisms that brought water and salt together in the landscape and mechanisms that brought saline groundwater to the surface. Using these information products, the spatial plan took the form of a farm plan that clearly mapped the location and design of surface water management earthworks, areas of revegetation, water storages, roads and fences such that the salinising processes in each paddock were directly impacted through the considered location of the proposed works. One such plan at Broomehill was promptly implemented in 1996 and the results have been monitored since that time. The farm plan is shown to be more cost effective than comparable farm plans on nearby properties that did not use information from geophysics.At Tammin, ground geophysical surveys (gravity and time domain electromagnetics) were used to identify the location of sedimentary fill in a buried inset valley. This was to provide information on which to base the siting of a production bore such that it would intersect hydrologically transmissive sediments. This bore was used to test the effectiveness of groundwater pumping to lower the watertable and recover agricultural land from salinity.The bore failed to pump an adequate volume of water and the groundwater pumping aspect of the trial was considered a failure. However, the value of this case study lies in observation of the characteristics of the geophysical information collected.The geophysical data were collected along four transects 0.8 km to 2.0 km apart. The processed geophysical data revealed cross-section profiles of the buried valley and the production bore was located on the transect that showed the steepest “V” profile. Given only four transects of information and the difficulty of interpolating over up to 2 km between them, this choice is understandable. The failure of the interpretation of the geophysical transect data to locate a suitable bore site calls into question the usefulness of geophysical survey transects up to 2 km apart. The geophysical information (although it was cheaper) was not much better than having four transects of closely spaced bores. It failed to adequately reveal the hydrogeological architecture of the study area. This case study revealed the importance of survey design and scope to ensure that the data are suitable to produce interpreted information products that are suitable for the purpose.A helicopter-borne, time domain electromagnetic survey was flown over the Lake Warden Wetlands near Esperance. The data were processed and interpreted to reveal potential groundwater flow paths in the main aquifers underlying the wetlands. This information, along with salt storage distribution maps derived from the conductivity product, was provided to the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) in the form of the maps shown in this thesis. This information enabled the DEC to formulate a catchment management strategy that focussed on the eastern sub-catchments of Bandy Creek and Neridup Creek as the main sources of saline groundwater. Surface water management plans prioritised diversion of waters contaminated by discharging saline groundwater and could be designed without active discharge occurring at the time. Prior to this survey, the DEC and South Coast Natural Resource Management were promoting generic management strategies, such as revegetation to reduce groundwater recharge, over the whole catchment area.The information products developed in this study enabled the DEC and community to understand mechanisms causing high water tables and salinisation in the wetlands and consequently, to be much more targeted and effective in their investment of limited land conservation funding.In all these case studies, the use of geophysics was essential to identify the hydrogeological architecture and mechanisms responsible for the salinisation of land and water. Furthermore, the interpretation of the data and design of information products is critical as to whether the information is successfully acted upon. The interpretation of the data and design of information products based on location of aquifers and other geological structures is critical to adoption by land managers and the impact and effectiveness of the actions taken.

It is generally accepted that tree roots can reinforce soil and improve the stability of vegetated slopes. Tree root reinforcement is also recognised in riverbanks although the contribution that the roots make to bank stability has rarely been assessed due to the reluctance of geomorphologists to examine riverbank stability by geomechanical methods that allow for the inclusion of quantified biotechnical parameters. This study investigates the interaction between alluvial soil and the roots of four southeastern Australian riparian trees. It quantifies the amount and distribution of root reinforcement present beneath typically vegetated riverbanks of the upper Nepean River, New South Wales, and examines the effect of the reinforcement on the stability of these banks. The ability of a tree to reinforce the soil is limited by the spatial distribution of its root system and the strength that the roots impart to the soil during shear. These two parameters were determined for the following four species of native riparian tree: Casuarina glauca, Eucalyptus amplifolia, Eucalyptus elata, and Acacia floribunda. The four species all exhibit a progressive reduction in the quantity of root material both with increasing depth and with increasing lateral distance from the tree stem. In the vertical direction there are two distinct zones that can be described. The first occurs from between 0 and approximately 15 % of the maximum vertical depth and consists of approximately 80 % of the total root material quantity. In this zone the root system consists of both vertical and lateral roots, the size and density of which varies between species. The second zone occurs below approximately 15 % of the maximum vertical depth and consists primarily of vertical roots. The quantity of root material in this zone decreases exponentially with depth due to the taper of individual roots. The earth reinforcement potential in terms of both geometric extent and the quantity of root material expressed as the Root Area Ratio (RAR) varies significantly from species to species. E. elata exhibited the highest values of RAR in soil zones beneath it while E. amplifolia reinforced a greater volume of soil than any of the other species examined. The increased shear resistance (Sr) of alluvial soil containing roots was measured by direct in-situ shear tests on soil blocks beneath a plantation. For three of the species (C. glauca, E. amplifolia, E. elata) Sr increased with increasing RAR measured at the shear plane, in a similar linear relationship. The shear resistance provided by A. floribunda roots also increased with increasing RAR at the shear plane but at a much greater rate than for the other three species. This is attributable to A. floribunda’s greater root tensile strength and therefore pull-out resistance, as well as its smaller root diameters at comparative RARs which resulted in a greater proportion of roots reaching full tensile strength within the confines of the test. Tree roots fail progressively in this system. Therefore determining the increased shear strength from the sum of the pull-out or tensile strengths of all individual roots and Waldron’s (1977) and Wu et al’s (1979) simple root model, would result in substantial over estimates of the overall strength of the soil-root system. The average difference between Sr calculated in this manner and that measured from direct in-situ shear tests is 10.9 kPa for C. glauca, 19.0 kPa for E. amplifolia, 19.3 kPa for E. elata, and 8.8 kPa for A. floribunda. A riverbank stability analysis incorporating the root reinforcement effect was conducted using a predictive model of the spatial distribution of root reinforcement beneath riparian trees within the study area. The model is based on measurements of juveniles and observations of the rooting habits of mature trees. It indicates that while the presence of vegetation on riverbank profiles has the potential to increase stability by up to 105 %, the relative increase depends heavily on the actual vegetation type, density, and location on the bank profile. Of the species examined in this study the greatest potential for improved riverbank stability is provided by E. amplifolia, followed by E. elata, A. floribunda, and C. glauca. The presence of trees on banks of the Nepean River has the potential to raise the critical factor of safety (FoS) from a value that is very unstable (0.85) to significantly above 1.00 even when the banks are completely saturated and subject to rapid draw-down. It is likely then that the period of intense bank instability observed within this environment between 1947 and 1992 would not have taken place had the riparian vegetation not been cleared prior to the onset of wetter climatic conditions. Typical ‘present-day’ profiles are critically to marginally stable. The introduction of vegetation could improve stability by raising the FoS up to 1.68 however the selection of revegetation species is crucial. With the placement of a large growing Eucalypt at a suitable spacing (around 3-5 m) the choice of smaller understorey trees and shrubs is less important. The effect of riparian vegetation on bank stability has important implications for channel morphological change. This study quantifies the mechanical earth reinforcing effect of some native riparian trees, thus allowing for improved deterministic assessment of historical channel change and an improved basis for future riverine management.

In 1879 the British Colony of New South Wales hosted the first international exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere. This was immediately followed by the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880 in the colony of Victoria and the success of these exhibitions inspired the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition, which was held in 1888 to celebrate the centenary of white settlement in Australia. My thesis is that these international exhibitions had a profound impact on the development of our cities, the evolution of an Australian ethos and the gaining of nationhood. The immense popularity and comprehensive nature of the exhibitions made them the only major events in late nineteenth-century Australia that brought the people together in an almost universally shared experience. The exhibitions conveyed official ideologies from the organising elites to ordinary people and encouraged the dissemination of new cultural sentiments, political aspirations, and moral and educational ideals. Many exhibition commissioners, official observers and ideologues were also predominantly involved in the Federation movement and the wider cultural sphere. The international exhibitions assisted the development of an Australian urban ethos, which to a large extent replaced the older pastoral / frontier image. Many of the more enduring ideas emanating from the exhibitions were physically expressed in the consequent development of our cities ??? particularly Sydney and Melbourne, both of which had achieved metropolitan status and global significance by the end of the nineteenth century. The new urban ethos, dramatically triggered by Sydney 1879, combined with and strengthened the national aspirations and sentiments of the Federation movement. Thus the exhibitions created an immediate connection between colonial pride in urban development and European and American ideals of nation building. They also created an increasing cultural sophistication and a growing involvement in social movements and political associations at the national level. The international exhibitions, more than any other single event, convinced the colonials that they were all Australians together and that their destiny was to be united as one nation. At that time, Australians began to think about national objectives. The exhibitions not only promulgated national sentiment and a new ethos, but also provided opportunities for independent colonial initiatives, inter-colonial cooperation and a more equal position in the imperial alliance. Thus they became a powerful impetus, hitherto unrecognised, for the complex of social, political and economic developments that made Federation possible.

This thesis examines the role of the artist at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It focuses on the interaction between art and science in an exploration of the dialectical processes that may occur in that interaction. Researchers have recently developed techniques in stem cell technology and genetic modification that offer remarkable potential and bring possible advantages and disadvantages for scientists and the wider community. In response to these new technologies, scientists and artists have developed collaborative projects and, in some instances, artists have moved from the studio to the science laboratory to create work called sci-art, bio-art, or moistmedia. This new inter-disciplinary activity affords prospects of dialectical processes: it crosses many boundaries and disturbs some existing conventions and practices, and, for the artists involved, the access to innovative materials has moved their work into areas of new skills and concepts. The extent to which traditional artists and those with collaborative sci-art practices contribute to the debate on important social and cultural issues forms part of this study. The research data was gathered during semi-structured interviews with scientists and artists, of whom three scientists and five artists are involved in sci-art collaborations. Proposed dialectical processes identified in the data are outlined throughout the document. A discussion about the ways in which contemporary art and artists are located within the current social and cultural environment; the status accorded visual art education today; and the manner in which commentators and other members of the public regard the elements and functions of art, forms the initial framework. This is followed by an overview of biologically based art practices, worldwide, that provides a background for a discussion of sci-art collaborations. These collaborations are initiated by a wide range of individuals and organisations and, according to the participants, the intentions of the originator or funding body have the potential to influence the outcome of the collaboration. The research explores possible conflicts of interest between the parties involved in these interactions, and any perceived implications for creative freedom. This study also examines current attitudes towards the notion of creativity in science and art, the avant-garde, and the relevance of philosophy and theory in art practices. It discusses the extent to which technology influences the creative process, and highlights issues that augment, interrogate or philosophise about the role of the contemporary artist. The research found that, although the notion of Snow’s ‘two cultures’ still has supporters, there are more similarities than dissimilarities between scientists and artists. Although some instances of Hegelian dialectical processes were identified, the data residing in many of the participants’ responses called for a more post-structuralist, non-linear approach to the dialectic as described by Jervis (1998), Janesick (2000) and others. In this way, the data drew attention to many complex issues and tensions that emanate from the interaction between art, science, technology, government and commerce, and the interaction between artists and the culture and society in which they live at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

L’architecture crustale et l’évolution de la partie profonde des marges passives peu-magmatiques sont encore mal comprises. En prenant comme chantier principal les marges Australie-Antarctique, cette thèse montre que l’enregistrement de la déformation dans les sédiments met en évidence une évolution polyphasée des marges distales. Cette évolution polyphasée implique le développement de multiples systèmes de détachement présentant une organisation hors-séquence et menant à une architecture finale symétrique des domaines exhumés. Cette organisation des systèmes de failles est liée à des cycles de délocalisation / relocalisation de la déformation influencés par l’apport magmatique, par un niveau de découplage et par la remontée asthénosphérique. L’interaction faille / magma apparait particulièrement importante dans l’évolution des marges distales. Cette étude a permis de mieux caractériser la rupture lithosphérique, qui peut se définir comme un événement tectono-magmatique progressif
The crustal architecture and evolution of the deepest part of magma-poor rifted margins is currently not well understood. Taking the Australia-Antarctica margins as main study area, this thesis shows that the record of the deformation in sediments highlights a clear polyphase evolution of distal margins. This polyphase evolution implies the development of multiple detachment systems presenting an out-of-sequence organization and leading to a final symmetric architecture of the exhumed domains. This organization of fault systems is linked to cycles of delocalisation / re-localisation of the deformation influenced by the magmatic supply, by a decoupling level and by the asthenospheric uplift. Fault / magma interaction appears particularly important during the evolution of distal margins. This study allowed a better characterization of the lithospheric breakup, which can be defined as a progressive tectono-magmatic event

However, directly estimating dispersal can often be difficult. Therefore, estimates of gene flow, the movement of genes, are often used to infer dispersal among natural populations. In riverine species, gene flow is determined by species biology, riverine architecture and flow regime. While many studies investigate the role of species dispersive strategies by comparing patterns of genetic structure in different species across the same geographic range, few also attempt to investigate the role of the non-biotic influences on gene flow in a comparative manner. Instead, studies regarding landscape processes (river architecture and hydrology) are based upon observations in a single riverine environment and not compared to other catchments that may differ in riverine architecture or hydrology. This study attempts to investigate all three factors influencing gene flow and genetic diversity using a comparative approach. This is done by contrasting two species of freshwater fish in two riverine systems that differ in their hydrological and structural makeup. By comparing patterns of genetic structure for each fish species, the role of species biology (behavioural and physical adaptations) can be explored. Then, by comparing patterns of genetic structure for each species, between riverine systems that differ in their landscape processes, the role of hydrology and riverine architecture in determining genetic structure can be explored. This study employed three different genetic markers to elucidate patterns of genetic structure and genetic diversity. These were, direct sequencing and screening of the control region of the mitochondrial DNA genome, microsatellite loci and allozymes...
