Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: This article reads depictions of the fille-mère as a vehicle for the expression of anxieties surrounding representation of marginal female figures and freedom of the press in the Belle Époque. It looks to two texts, exploring how these fictional unmarried mothers differ from Hugo's Fantine, the archetype of the fille-mère , earlier in the nineteenth century. After an overview of welfare support for unmarried mothers in the long nineteenth century, the author provides close and intermedial readings of a 1902 issue of L'Assiette au Beurre and Marcelle Tinayre's La Rebelle (1905), focusing on the limits of representation of these non-conforming women.

Abstract (sommario):
The women’s right to vote was recognised by the Second Polish Republic in 1918. That led to certain changes in the politics of the country. The Catholic women’s press played a major role in examining what was influencing female voters. There were two points of interest for political journalism: 1) the justification of women’s right to political equality by showing Polish women as heroines throughout the Polish history; 2) popularisation of women’s right to vote. Readers were encouraged to learn how Polish women gained voting experience. The press was particularly interested in Catholic female Members of the Polish Parliament and deputies for the Silesian Sejm. The debate itself was repeating the patterns of the patriarchal system and the archetype of the Polish Mother and the Polish-Catholic woman. Thus, they were shown as defenders of the traditional way of doing politics, assuring that after gaining the suffrage the Polish women would vote for the Catholic National political parties.

Abstract (sommario):
The article reveals a corpus of folklore and literary texts dedicated to the life and activities of the horse thief Shakur Rakhimov who was shot in 1926. His gang consisted of 100 people. In the Russian literary tradition, writers turned to this image only during the years of perestroika – largely by order of the Press Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. These are the story by E. Sukhov “Shakur-karak” (1994) and the essay by M. Belyaev and A. Sheptytsky “Robin Hood or the Progenitor of Organized Crime?”, which was written for the book “Gangster Tatarstan”. Both works were created on a documentary basis. The writers familiarized themselves with 40 volumes of the criminal case, analyzed press coverage of the events and the memories of the eyewitnesses. The fight between the smart thief and the professional investigator is depicted in F. Dostoevsky’s traditions. Tatar literature remains faithful to the folklore tradition where the image of Shakur-karak gravitates towards the pole of the Robin Hood archetype – the people’s protector. It is obvious that the Gorky romantic tradition dominates in Tatar works.

Abstract (sommario):
The representation of women artists in the Spanish graphic press in the first third of the 20th century is a field of research that has hardly been approached, which has undoubted value for its contribution to the analysis of the reception of plastic artists in the period in which women began to make their way into the art system. This work analyzes the construction and meanings behind the archetype of the female painter in the particular case of the magazine Blanco y Negro (1891-1936), which was a pioneer in the modernization of the illustrated press in Spain as well as emblematic for its covers and artistic pages, made by the most recognized artists and cartoonists of the time.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In 1836, American actor Thomas D. Rice first arrived in Great Britain to tour the creation that had made him famous in the USA, Jim Crow. This blackface depiction of a raggedy, runaway slave, with his infectious songs, eccentric dancing and demotic appeal soon took London by storm. The Jim Crow craze lasted for three years, with Rice finding fame, fortune and success and his imitators becoming ubiquitous in the capital's theatres and on its streets. Although the act and its character have been acknowledged as a precursor to the evolution of British minstrelsy and blackface traditions throughout the Victorian period, the craze itself has not been substantially studied in its British context. This essay will look beyond Rice's act and the performance of Jim Crow in the theatres to look instead at Jim Crow's appropriation in print satire and street performance. It will argue that these requisitions of Jim Crow illustrate how Georgian traditions of carnival and grotesque humour were redeveloped for the early Victorian context. In print, Jim Crow was widely utilized in caustic bodily humour that attacked insincere politicians. On the streets, this same humour was seen as obscene and was repressed and contained, paving the way for the respectable, mainstream Victorian blackface act. However, integral to both appropriations of Jim Crow was the figure of the black buffoon, and the act rapidly provided an archetype for the belittling and persecution of London's black population.

Lloyd, Benjamin. "Stanislavsky, Spirituality, and the Problem of the Wounded Actor". New Theatre Quarterly 22, n. 1 (febbraio 2006): 70–75. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0266464x06000303.

Abstract (sommario):
In the following article Benjamin Lloyd uses the work of the noted Swiss psychologist Alice Miller to propose a new archetype – ‘the wounded actor’, a person in the throes of a narcissistic disorder, as defined by Miller in her book The Drama of the Gifted Child. He suggests that conventional actor training will not help the wounded actor, but that the re-introduction of spirituality into the acting-class curriculum may do so. In this light he looks at Stanislavsky's writings about spirituality, focusing on the chapter in An Actor Prepares called ‘Communion’. Linking Stanislavsky's spirituality to the writings and thought of Leo Tolstoy, he explores the reasons why the spiritual nature of Stanislavsky's work has not been generally explored in the West, and suggests some ways in which acting teachers may introduce spiritual concerns into their curricula. Benjamin Lloyd teaches at Villanova University. His The Actor's Way: a Journal of Self-Discovery in Letters is due for publication later this year by Allworth Press, New York, and he is currently facilitating a workshop on possible intersections between Quaker spiritual practice and theatre-making called ‘Revival: Meetings for Theatre’.

Abstract (sommario):
Josip Juraj Strossmayer is a major political figure in nineteenth century Croatian history, and he represents the archetype of a cleric-politician. As one of the ideologists of the Croatian People’s Party (the narodniaks), he advocated the reconstruction of the Habsburg monarchy on a federalist basis and considered the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia to be politically equal not only with Hungary, but also with Austria. Interested in religious philosophy, Strossmayer developed a “code of honour” for a narodniak-politician, based on political morality. Such morality was based on the “crystal” honesty of the people's representative towards himself and the voters, which meant following his principles to the end. In practice, the main criterion for compliance with this morality was the defence of the rights of the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia, and more broadly the southern Slavs of the Habsburg monarchy in relation to Hungary and Austria; in other words, every manner of resistance to Magyarisation and Germanisation. He followed this principle himself throughout the entire period of his major political activity (1860–1873), which eventually led to his disillusionment with politics and the realization of his own powerlessness to influence the situation in unfavourable political conditions in the Monarchy. Nevertheless, despite personal political setbacks and the associated attacks of political opponents in the press, he didn’t depart from his beliefs, but remained faithful to them, even when they ceased to be shared by the majority of his party colleagues. Croatian-Hungarian relations after 1868 he considered far from the ideal of political morality, mainly because of their inequality.

Abstract (sommario):
The representation of the concept of freedom in Ukrainian journalistic texts is studied, which demonstrates its modern content in the public consciousness and reflection in the language material, stereotypes and connotations, the development of the concept in a diachronic way. They are preferred as a universal value category, which is represented in various spheres of life of both the individual and society, the state. It is established that the freedom correlates with civil rights and freedoms in the context of interaction between individuals and the state, as well as correlates with the possibility of the individual being freely realized in society, without pressure from other people or social formations. The socio-political discourse revealed the opposition of the will of the people and the will of power as a democratic and autocratic vector of society, the actualization of the concept of political will as an instrument of constructive change, freedom and independence of the state. The language material testifies to such components of the conceptual sphere of will as the use of the subject of civil rights and freedoms (freedom of speech, press, movement, etc.); participation of the subject in socio-political life (elections and other acts of expression of will). In the context of the democratic development of the state, the idea of preserving freedom with opportunity can be an instrument of the authorities and must be protected from external and internal threats. Freedom as an ethical category is studied in connection with the nationally determined archetype of the struggle for freedom; in historical and contemporary contexts, freedom is shared by a corresponding value and can be represented above life. At the present stage, in addition to strengthening the value component, we can assume evolutionary changes in meaningful concepts due to social, economic and humanitarian challenges in the context of military aggression, and their reflection in the facts of language.

Abstract (sommario):
In The Poetics of Islamic Legitimacy, Suzanne Pinckney Stetkevycheffectively debunks the myth that the classical Arabic panegyric ode (qasidat al-madh) is merely a descriptive, prescriptive, or sycophanticpoetic genre by demonstrating its dynamic engagements with what sheterms “Arabo-Islamic court life.” The book builds on her previous work(e.g., The Mute Immortals Speak [Cornell University Press: 1993]), usingan approach that blends an understanding of myth, rite, and archetype inthe classical Arabic qasidah with historically grounded, contextualizedinterpretations of these poems. Her insightful, close readings of individualpoems are coupled with a detailed exploration of the classical Arabicqasidah’s social and ritual functions – from the pre-Islamic period, through its early days, and continuing through the Umayyad and`Abbasid periods. This book’s specific argument is that the panegyric ode “created, encoded, and promulgated a myth and ideology of legitimate Arabo-Islamic rule” (p. ix). She uses a range of contemporary sources, includinganecdotal material about poetry and poets, in her interpretations. Thisgrounds her detailed and specific literary analyses in a broader sociopolitical, historical, and cultural setting and invigorates her argumentsabout poetry’s role in relation to power and leadership. Each chapter treats one aspect of this overall argument and progresseschronologically, beginning with pre-Islamic Arabia and ending withAndalusia. Each chapter is highly structured and begins by setting a context.Stetkevych then explicates the paradigms and theories employed (e.g.,Van Gennep’s rite of passage and Mauss’ formulation of ritual exchange),before providing a translation of the poem(s) to be analyzed. Finally, sheanalyzes one or more poems, reading each section meticulously in relationto the previously outlined contexts, paradigms, and theories, as well as theArabic literary tradition. She also notes grammatical and linguistic pointsand the sociopolitical, historical and/or cultural elements affecting its composition. She concludes by linking each chapter to the larger idea that bindsthe book together – how the poems shore up or undermine the legitimacyof Arabo-Islamic leaders ...

Abstract (sommario):
SummaryBackground Wearable face-mounted computers such as Google Glass™, Microsoft HoloLens™, and Oculus’ Rift®, are increasingly being tested in hospital care. These devices challenge social etiquette, raise privacy issues, and may disrupt the intimacy of the doctor patient relationship. We aimed to determine patients’ perception of and their privacy concerns with an archetype of wearable face-mounted computer devices, Google Glass. Methods Hospitalized inpatients were asked about their familiarity with Glass, how comfortable they would be and if they would be concerned about privacy if their physician wore Glass, if the use of Glass would affect their trust in their physician, and if they would want their physician to wear Glass if it improved their care. Results Most (73%) respondents were unfamiliar with Glass, though 64% would be comfortable if their doctor wore Glass. Under half (46%) of respondents were concerned about privacy with the use of Glass. Seventy-six percent (76%) of respondents stated their doctor wearing Glass would not affect their trust in their doctor. Patients concerned about their privacy were less likely to trust their doctor if their doctor wore Glass (17% vs. 0%, p<0.01). Sixty-five percent (65%) of respondents would want their doctor to wear Glass if it improved their care. Conclusion Most patients appear open to and would want their doctor to use face-mounted wearable computers such as Glass, even when unfamiliar with this technology. While some patients expressed concerns about privacy, patients were much less concerned about wearable technologies affecting the trust they have in their physician.Citation: Prochaska MT, Press VG, Meltzer DO, Arora VM. Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the article is to explore of genre and dramaturgic features of a modern historical film. The research methodology is based on the systematic use of materials from the scientific branches of art and cultural science, cinema theory and history, psychology, etc. The empirical basis of the study included a series of historical films of the XXI century, a detailed analysis of genre and dramaturgic features was carried out. The results. Historical drama is the leading genre of a film based on real events, which grinds the past, turning it into a mirror image of the present. Thus, the theme of the film, its newsworthiness has the equal importance along with the genre, which ensures the integrity of the material, director’s and cameraman’s methods and techniques and the style, which forms the aesthetic expressiveness of the film. Films based on real events, which premiered in the XXI century, were chosen as the empirical basis of the study. As the core of the plot were chosen issues of human rights violations, social discrimination and injustice. These problems have their origins in ancient times and have long been the main obstacles for the establishment of democratic values in society. We found that modern historical drama has significant morphological differences from the XX century drama: lack of epicism, abandonment of the tragic component in favor of a happy ending, the transition from melodramatics to hybridization of drama with more dynamic genres: action, road movie, western. At the same time, we see that modern historical drama has signs of genre elasticity and syncretism, which allows forming new multigenre constructions that have not yet entered scientific circulation in the domestic press (action drama, crime drama, western drama, kidnap drama, etc.). The dramatic features of modern historical films are closely related to the genre construction of the films. The genre of autobiography determines the priority of using the “plot of growing up” and “plot of the experience”, when the main characters grow up psychologically and fight for their rights: life, freedom, personal inviolability. The hero — is dominated archetype, a person who serves others, sacrifices himself or puts himself in constant danger for the sake of others. The issue of social inequality in the historical context, when realities separate the viewer from the depicted events for a significant period of time, is reflected in the historical film more often and has a proper response from the viewer. At the same time, the modern issue of human rights, which demonstrates the principle of “democracy for the elect” is not so popular among modern fans of historical cinema. Novelty. The scientific novelty of the article is to identify the modern morphology of historical film, the actualization of the relationship between the genre, the magnitude of the theme of historical film, its dramatic solution and the value expectations of the audience. The practical significance. The main theses and results of the research may be useful for practicing screenwriters of historical films. The recommendations in this article contribute to the creation of a commercially successful and psychologically powerful film product. In addition, the article can be used for academic disciplines in film schools in Ukraine and abroad.

Abstract (sommario):
Vigorous extra-parliamentary public debate over the question of union helped to ensure that Scotland brought into the Union of 1707 a sense of itself as a nation with national opinions. Though the parliamentary electorate remained small, a meaningful number of Scots engaged in public political debate on the question of union. Petitions from shires, burghs and parishes spoke for local communities and pamphleteers presented Scottish voices through archetypal figures such as a ‘country farmer’. This allowed opponents to declare that incorporating union was inconsistent with ‘the publickly expressed mind of the nation’. After the Union, extra-parliamentary national opinion continued to be expressed and sustained by the Scottish press and petitions, contributing to the maintenance of Scottish national identity within the United Kingdom.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this article is to examine the sport–celebrity relationship of singer–actress Jessica Simpson and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. This qualitative analysis of 100 magazine and 100 newspaper articles that coincided with the first publicized notion of the “Jessica [Simpson] Jinx” reveals the prevailing dominant ideologies of patriarchal structures, traditional gender roles, hegemonic masculinity, and deviance. This study uncovers typologies that mirror the archetypal sporting partnership, for example, Simpson’s feminine position as a “supporter” and her function as an “antagonist” (e.g., the femme fatale, Yoko Ono) and Romo’s position as a hegemonic male (the new-laddist, maverick sporting star) and victim. Through developing these themes, the researchers illustrate the concepts of villainization and victimization in the mass media, where Simpson was portrayed unfavorably. Romo, conversely, was portrayed favorably in the press, suggesting the need to maintain the patriarchal order while restraining female dominance.

Abstract (sommario):
The sloshing of water waves in a vertical cylindrical tank is an archetypal damped oscillator in fluid mechanics. The wave frequency is traditionally derived in the potential flow limit (Lamb, Hydrodynamics, Cambridge University Press, 1932), and the damping rate results from the combined effects of the viscous dissipation at the wall, in the bulk and at the free surface (Case & Parkinson, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 2, 1957, pp. 172–184). Still, the classic theoretical prediction accounting for these effects significantly underestimates the damping rate when compared to careful laboratory experiments (Cocciaro et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 246, 1993, pp. 43–66). Specifically, theory provides a unique value for the damping rate, while experiments reveal that the damping increases as the sloshing amplitude decreases. Here, we investigate theoretically the effects of capillarity at the contact line on the decay time of capillary–gravity waves. To this end, we marry a model for the inviscid waves to a nonlinear empiric law for the contact line that incorporates contact angle hysteresis. The resulting system of equations is solved by means of a weakly nonlinear analysis using the method of multiple scales. Capillary effects have a dramatic influence on the calculated damping rate, especially when the sloshing amplitude gets small: this nonlinear interfacial term increases in the limit of zero wave amplitude. In contrast to viscous damping, where the wave motion decays exponentially, the contact angle hysteresis can act as Coulomb solid friction, thus yielding the arrest of the contact line in a finite time.

Abstract (sommario):
For the interdisciplinarian, Anglo-Indian historiography can be frustrating. In working on Paul Scott's Raj quartet (four profoundly historical novels about Anglo-India, 1942–7, better known as TV's The jewel in the crown) I have faced such questions as: whether it is reasonable to believe that in 1947 a senior British police officer who owned Pathan clothes and brown make-up used them professionally, passing as an Indian to gather intelligence; what credence the officer's probable homosexuality gives an alternative explanation, that cultural transvestism and Indian guise served private sexual rather than public professional ends; and whether the resonances with Thuggee in the costumed and made-up officer's murder by strangulation (in a Muslim-ruled, Hindu-majority, not-yet-acceded princely state in late July 1947) are of any historical merit. But the archetypes in which writers of fiction can combine scope and particularity are unavailable to the historian, too often confined to the dense and satisfying footnotery of the local study claimed as typical, or happily wandering the open generalizations of the all-India history claimed as exemplary; and for the critic wishing to test the historical probity of a fiction the result is Hobson's choice between easily-found but tangential treatments, and trawling memoirs for the reticent implications of conventional Anglo-Indian understatement.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT A 3,372-bp insertion sequence, ISPpu12, has been identified on the archetypal toluene-xylene TOL catabolic plasmid pWW0 from Pseudomonas putida mt-2. The insertion sequence element is located on the plasmid between bases 84397 and 87768 in a region which also contains the termini and transposase genes of the catabolic transposons Tn4651 and Tn4653 (A. Greated, L. Lambertson, P. A. Williams, and C. M. Thomas, Environ. Microbiol., in press). ISPpu12 has terminal inverted repeats of 24 bp with three mismatches and contains four open reading frames, a tnpA homologue and three open reading frames (lspA, orf1, and orf2) of undetermined function. After insertion in vitro of a Kmr cassette into ISPpu12 either in the intergenic region between orf1 and orf2 or directly into the orf1 gene and ligation into a suicide vector, the modified ISPpu12-Km transposes at high frequency, often in multiple copies, into the chromosome of a P. putida recipient. Inactivation of lspA, orf1, and orf2 by introducing a 7-bp deletion into the 5′ region of each gene had no major effect upon transposition, but a similar mutation of tnpA completely eliminated transposition. Analysis of the literature and of strains derived from the chlorobenzoate-degrading Pseudomonas sp. strain B13 suggests that the promiscuity of this element has played an important role in the history of plasmid pWW0. Database comparisons and the accompanying paper (A. J. Weightman, A. W. Topping, K. E. Hill, L. L. Lee, K. Sakai, J. H. Slater, and A. W. Thomas, J. Bacteriol. 184:6581-6591, 2002) show that ISPpu12 is a transposable element also found in other bacteria.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In 1942 Orson Welles traveled to Brazil to film a movie about four Brazilian fishermen who had protested their labor conditions by traveling nearly 2,500 kilometers for sixty-one days from the city of Fortaleza to Rio de Janeiro on a rustic sail-raft called a jangada. Their voyage pressured Brazil’s so-called New State (Estado Novo) to recognize the fishermen’s trade as an official profession within the state’s expanding social programs and centralized labor laws. Through an analysis of the fishermen, their voyage, Orson Welles’ visit, and Brazil’s Northeast, this article examines the role of the region in both imagining and moving beyond the nation in the twentieth century. It presents press accounts, intellectual essays, music, images, film, and the Dirio dos jangadeiros – a scrapbook of sorts in which supporters from all social classes left messages for the fishermen at each port. While structurally, the fishermen’s protest pulled the most rustic element of this newly defined region into the modern legal apparatus of a centralized state, symbolically, the fishermen’s journey generated an archetypal figure that provided a way to talk about the Northeast in terms of its rusticity, developing both racialized and folkloric characteristics of its people and uniting the semi-arid backlands and the humid, tropical coast. The fishermen of the Northeast were transformed from brave labor organizers into non-threatening folkloric figures through a process of memory, narration, and forgetting. Examining the fishermen’s story as a regionally-defining moment that transcended national boundaries provides a significant case study of how, by the mid-twentieth century, the nation came to be understood as a series of interrelated regions, with one region serving as both national scapegoat and root of authentic culture.

Abstract (sommario):
The author of the publication reviews the photobook “Palimpsests”, published in 2018 in the publishing house “Ad Marginem Press” with the support of the Heinrich Böll Foundation. The book presents photos of post-Soviet cities taken by M. Sher. Preface, the author of which is the coordinator of the “Democracy” program of the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Russia N. Fatykhova, as well as articles by M. Trudolyubov and K. Bush, which accompany these photos, contain explanation of the peculiarities of urban space formation and patterns of its habitation in the Soviet Union times and in the post-Soviet period. The author of the publication highly appreciates the publication under review. Analyzing the photographic works of M. Sher and their interpretation undertaken in the articles, the author of the publication agrees with the main conclusions of N. Fatykhova, M. Trudolyubov and K. Bush with regards to the importance of the role of the state in the processes of urban development and urbanization in the Soviet and post-Soviet space, but points out that the second factor that has a key influence on these processes is ownership relations. The paper positively assesses the approach proposed by the authors of the photobook to the study of the post-Soviet city as an architectural and landscape palimpsest consisting mainly of two layers, “socialist” and “capitalist”. The author of the publication specifically emphasizes the importance of analyzing the archetypal component of this palimpsest, pointing out that the articles published in the reviewed book do not pay sufficient attention to this issue. Particular importance is attributed by the author to the issue of metageography of post-Soviet cities and meta-geographical approach to their exploration. Emphasizing that the urban palimpsest is a system of realities, each in turn including a multitude of ideas, meanings, symbols, and interpretations, the author points out that the photobook “Palimpsests” is actually an invitation to a scientific game with space, which should start a new direction in the study of post-Soviet urban space.

Abstract (sommario):
Publication of An essay on spirit in 1750 was, on the face of it, no particular landmark in the history of heterodoxy. There had been arguments in Anglican circles since the 1680s about ‘mystery’ and the Holy Trinity, all part of the assault on fundamental articles of belief waged by such critics as John Toland and Anthony Collins after the Revolution Settlement, a time when interest in Arian ideas was reviving among Isaac Newton's followers, particularly Samuel Clarke and William Whiston. An essay on spirit – this latest expression of a highly developed Arianism – was couched in scholastic, even esoteric language, of apparent interest only to controversialists on either side of the question. What, however, made it a cause célèbre was the talk from the moment it left the press that its author and apologist for what we have recently been reminded was the archetypal Christian deviation was none other than one of the most senior members of the Church of Ireland – the bishop of Clogher, Robert Clayton, himself an Englishman by birth. Though not every commentator could or would believe this ascription, the bishop himself never attempted to deny it and, before long, the unsettling evidence of the extent to which heresy had penetrated the highest circles of the Anglican establishment was beyond serious doubt. Its appearance (and the writings which followed) led to vigorous counter-blasts on both sides of the Irish Sea from a range of clerical and lay opinion that extended well beyond the confines of any church ‘party’. Having spent the previous half century countering, with some success, the different strains of deism and free-thinking on the frontiers of Anglicanism, a broad band of clergy was alarmed that Clayton's writings of the 1750s bore disturbing witness to the presence of traitors within the citadel who, in challenging the Church to tolerate their continued presence, were ready to endanger its moderate latitudinarian character. Moreover, An essay on spirit appeared at a time when the writings of Middleton and Hume also demanded the notice of theologians, and the ‘Church in Danger!’ had not ceased to be an appropriate battle cry to marginalised Tories.

Abstract (sommario):
The mysterious Russian soul is always looking for non-trivial aspects of a problem. The modern coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has become the subject of ridicule in the everyday laughing practices of Russian people. In this case, the laughing discourse acts as a form of psychological defense and struggle against the inevitable evil. The importance of the research is due to the lack of knowledge of the communicative and cognitive aspects of laughter discourse and the need to study the modern anecdote on the topic "coronavirus pandemic" in the aspect of forming the stability of the human psyche in the conditions of pandemics and isolation. The relevance of this work is also determined by the fact that it expands the empirical base of discourse linguistics, LSP theory and practice, motivology and emotive linguistics, whose interests include consideration of the problem of the influence of emotions on language. The relevance of the work also lies in the fact that special attention is paid to the little-studied phenomenon of "black humor", which is vividly represented in the laughing discourse about coronavirus. Unfortunately, today Russia occupies the leading positions in terms of the number of people infected with virus COVID-19. Archetypal fear of unknown Evil, of invisible death evoke chthonic experiences of the unconscious from the depths of the subconscious, actualizing the laughable techniques of devaluing danger as one of the effective methods of psychological protection. The world stereotype defines Russian people as frowning and unsmiling, extremely hostile to the world around them. The article reveals the specifics of modern Russian anecdotes about COVID-19. This allows the reader to understand what the stress resistance and resilience of the Russian person in a situation of degenerate press of negative information in various media is. This situation is complicated by fake news stories about the pandemic. What are Russian people laughing at during the pandemic? What helps them survive and stay mentally healthy in this situation? What is the specifics of Russian jokes about the pandemic? How do these anecdotes structure a person's inner space in a new way? What Parallels can we find in a laughing culture that plays up the stigmatized situations of tragedies, wars, and epidemics? This article is intended as an attempt to answer these and other questions.

MUREȘAN, Maria. "RELATED CONCEPTS: CULTURAL MATERIALISM, NEW HISTORICISM, CULTURAL STUDIES". Incursions into the imaginary 14, n. 1 (20 agosto 2023): 273–91. http://dx.doi.org/10.29302/inimag.2023.14.13.

Abstract (sommario):
Until 1988 Stephen Greenblatt practiced a kind of criticism which was closer to Cultural Materialism in its emphasis on ideology, on the exercise of state power in creating narratives supporting its desired self-image. In “Renaissance Self-Fashioning from More to Shakespeare” (Chicago University Oress, 1982), Greenblatt undertakes a Foucauldian archaeology into the imaginary which caught the public eye in an age reputed for its self-dramatization and acting. Alan Sinfield assumed his position as cultural materialist, which he equates with political dissidence, in his book, “Faultlines” (1992) from the very title: “Faultlines Cultural Materialism and the Politics of Dissident Reading”. Included in this book is an essay on “Cultural Materialism, Othello, and the Politics of Plausibility”. In a New Historicist approach to the play (“The Shakespearean Search for Archetypes”, 2020), Maria-Ana Tupan reads the plot against other texts that circulated at the time, and which account for the cognitive background of the characters. Neema Parvini, a scholar from the University of Surrey, is a telling example of the way New Historicism works, that is, through a historicized and theorized approach to the author in question and through meditation on the tools of his interpretation (metatheory). New Historicism too distances itself from the official canon, focusing on less known texts whose marginalization is seen as the policy of networks of power. Raymond Williams launched a concept somewhat similar to Foucault’s episteme – the “structure of feeling” – and his contribution to cultural anthropology dates back to 1961 when he published “The Long Revolution”. In Marin Sorescu’s “Vărul Shakespeare” (“Cousin Shakespeare”), for instance, Hamlet’s rage against the corruption of the Danish court swells so high because he is absolute for the humanistic ideals and values which were indeed current in the author’s time, but which do not characterize either the time of the action (dated by Saxo Grammaticus at about 1200 AD) nor the time of the author rewriting it for a postmodern audience. Similarly, D. R. Popescu produces a palimpsestic text in his 2012 novel, “Simonetta Berlusconi. Calugarul Filippo Lippi și călugărița Lucrezia Buti”, where not only do characters join a transhistorical party (the author too lapses into the chronodiegetic universe of the Italian Renaissance, visited by a refugee from Vlad the Impaler’s land) but the very ontological stability of the worlds vanishes into the faultlines separating authors, critics, editors, characters. The ongoing discussions about the sources, tenets, concepts and protocols of New Historicism, which are trying to breathe new life into a critical theory which colonized literary studies at the turn of the millennium, are revisionist and summative, locating New Historicism in the general picture assembled by William Wolfreys as editor of a book of essays on “Criticism at the 21st Century ”(Edinburgh University Press, 2002).
