Testo completoThe Mississippian Cultures are agricultural societies established on the Mississippi Valley between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries. Practicing maize agriculture, they established ceremonial and urban centers composed of tumuli on which various structures were built. The arrangement within the burial mounds is part of the socio-political organization of a society based on a cosmovision that has been the subject of various archaeological and ethnohistorical studies since the twentieth century. A mythology based on the antagonism between the Thunderbird and the Serpent materialized on artifacts made of copper and shells in particular. Through the study of the four major Mississippian sites (Cahokia, Moundville, Etowah and Spiro), what are the elements that allow us to speak of "Mississippian cultures"? Moreover, what socio-political-religious organization was adopted by the Mississippians considering the results of the archaeological studies carried out? To what extent can a study of twentieth-century ethnographic texts (Omaha, Osage, Sauk, among others) help in the analysis of the religious field? What observations did European colonizers have of Native American groups formerly federated with the Mississippians (the most evocative example being the Natchez)? Through the spatial analysis of the arrangement of burial mounds, funerary spaces and the question of sacrifice, iconography and its correlation to myths and funerary rites, this study is a contribution to the archaeology of Mississippi cultures and a contribution to the discussion on the socio-political organization of Mississippians

Testo completoThe story of medieval and modern hospitals remained for a long time the privilege of the historians and the art historians. Their works have delivered numerous informations, both on their charitable vocation and on their financial organization, also helping to understand the details of the everyday life. The recent discovery of several Hospital cemeteries led to us to start by contemplating this study in a transdisciplinary way and by including an archeo-anthropological reflection, to answer questions, which until then remained unsolved. These specific funeral contexts have, up to now never been studied. Our main objectives were to try to characterize at best the subjects welcomed in hospitals, by analyzing both the funeral practice and biology. Our research focused on four medieval and modern sites of the northeast of France. Our study showed that certain characteristics were similar from one cemetery to another, particularly the funeral practice and recruitment. The first ones indeed remain rather simple, without particular structure like sarcophagus or vault. The buried appear to be similar from a site to another, with a weak number of children and a sanitary state which does not differ from what was discovered in other contexts. The presence of multiple graves on three of these sites (Troyes, Verdun and Epinal) permitted us to acknowledge evidence of a few major crisis, and thus understand the difference in the management of such an event by a medieval hospital or by a modern one

Testo completoBarbuda is a small, relatively isolated, calcareous island in the northeastern West Indies. Since it is sparsely populated, it has been less affected by the large scale changes that were the result of European colonization. Therefore, it offers an exceptional opportunity to research intact prehistoric archaeological sites. This master’s thesis examines the earliest human occupation on Barbuda. During the 2011 and 2012 field campaigns of the Islands of Change project, directed by Dr. Sophia Perdikaris and funded by the National Science Fundation (USA), three Archaic Age sites were identified and excavated by an international team. The analysis of these sites and their respective collections which were solely composed of shell and lithics, helps to better understand Barbuda’s place in the Archaic Age of the Northern West Indies. This thesis presents these excavations, discusses the results of the analysis and contextualizes the importance of Barbuda in the regional economy.

Testo completoAfter the destructive earthquake that took place in 1980 in many localities of the Irpinia and the Basilicata, even the territory of the city of Buccino (Campania) former center of the ancient city of Volcei, was involved in the construction of new residentialblocs. During the reconstruction, the excavations of the Archeological Superintendence of Campania brought to light, all around of the hill on which the town is settled, about 270 burials dated from the mid VII and the III century BC. The study of the grave goods and burial practices as well as the analysis of the topography of the two necropolis area - in Braida and Santo Stefano localities - allowed us to get some important informations about the burials spatial organization, funeraryrituals, the material culture and about changes of the burial ritual after the arrival of the new population, of the Osco-Sabellian origin, in the delicate passage between V and IV century BC

Testo completoThis thesis' work follows a number of studies carried on for more than thirty years on the territory during the Iron Age. It focuses on the North-West Paris basin and covers up five centuries of evolution and occupation between the Ha D1 (625 BC) and the LT D1b (90 BC). lt relies on a very rich archaeological documentation supplying a relational database built after a long work of modeling and insertion within an-information system. 3,517 occupations were thus indexed and are divided into functional categories : domestic, funerary, religious and craftsmanship. They also include data linked to regional planning. This work focuses more particularly on the domestic and funerary data. Through the use of identical tools and methodologies based on statistics, spatial analysis and spatial statistics, the goal was to see how each of these categories of sites allowed to transcribe the evolution of the occupation, of the structuration of the territories, and also of the human groups. The question that arose was that of the hierarchy of the sites and, through them, of the society. The hierarchy was approached through a crossover study of fumiture and structures. For the domestic occupations, it was also the occasion to start considering the identification of the numerous activities implemented, which make it possible to characterize the complexity and the richness of the occupations

Testo completoThis disseration deals with two Syrian-American excavation projects in the north of Syria: the one at TellMozan / Urkesh (G. Buccellati Buccellati and Kelly) and the project at Tell Hamoukar (C. Reichel and S. al-Kintar).These two excavations are planned in the cooperation with the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums ofSyria (DGAM). We aim, through this archeothanatological study to reintegrate the anthropological data in the globalarcheological analysis of the population as well, in order to deepen our pre-established knowledge in the same timeof developing a multidisciplinary approach on such unpublished data. Such research is essential to complete thisrevealed knowledge mosaic of various ancient societies that occupied Upper Mesopotamia from Chalcolithic to theMiddle Bronze Age (3700-1600 BC.) leaving behind valuable evidences

Testo completoThe royal tombs and the tombs of prestige are specific of a group detaining a regional power or local power. We have identified archaeological traits in the Syrian and Mesopotamian Early Bronze Age context which could distinguish the prestige tombs from the others. These formal features are the monumental architecture, the specific location of the prestige tombs and the group of graves associated, and the grave goods. The wealth of the deposition and the structure are characteristics of the prestige tombs and it constitutes complex signs integrated in an ideological discourse. Thus, an anthropological perspective has been essential to appreciate the social implication of the elite funerary practices. As others main events in the society, funerary practices of prestige are rituals and social practices which play a role in the representation of the elite power and in the structure of the society. The royal tombs and the tombs of prestige are social instruments of ideological manipulation; the funerary practices are integrated in social discourse through rituals in order to reproduce and maintain social structure and justify the elite power

Testo completoThe roman cities of Asia Minor are surrounded by vast necropolises, amongst which funerary complexes are mostoften plundered. While monuments and inscriptions have been studied in great detail in the past, the depositional context andfunerary treatment of the dead and the management of collective burials have not been submitted to detailed analysis. Thediscovery of Tomb 163d, a subterranean funerary chamber not plundered in the North Necropolis of Hierapolis (ancientprovince of Phrygia, in the South-West of Turkey) provided a unique opportunity to apply archeo-anthropological analysis inorder to understand funerary treatment and burial practices. This study reinvestigated the excavations which took place in2003, to complement another four campaigns (2010-2013). For these excavation campaigns a specific intervention strategywas developed as part of the Archeological Italian Mission of Hierapolis. After discussing the chronological framework, thisstudy analyses funerary treatment (modes of inhumation, body treatment, depositional context) as well as the burialmanagement to the management within the dynamic of the funeral space. The stratigraphic analysis demonstrated that thegrave was utilized from the Augustan period to the 7th century and contained 293 individuals. During the 3rd century, a Jewishfamily rebought the tomb for further use, as indicated by the inscriptions engraved on the monument. The taphonomic study ofthe articulated skeletons revealed that the majority of the deceased were buried in wooden coffins. It appeared that the Jewishfamily left some skeletal remains from the first occupiers in situ, in accordance with the Roman law defining the sepulchrum asa locus religious. However, the management of human remains was more related to practical considerations, linked to thevolume of the remains, than to the concern of respecting the deceased. By analyzing and interpreting the organization offuneral spaces, the conclusions of this study provide new evidence on relationships between different religious groups living inHierapolis, and on aspects of burial practices during Roman Antiquity and Proto-Byzantine period

Testo completoCemeteries are an essential element in the study of the defining characters of the settlement and death rituals in societies within the end of the Lower Empire and the beginning of the Merovingian period (fifth-sixth centuries). In northern France, Merovingian archaeology developed punctuated by discoveries made since the nineteenth century, at the same time as the learned societies, museums and scientific conferences were appearing. Through the study of cemeteries may have drawn the main lines in the analysis of urban and rural settlement during late antiquity in northeastern Gaul, always in a relevant geopolitical framework based on the old administrative boundaries. Their study also observes any changes of the dynamics of relationships between the living and the dead from the funeral topography and its evolution. These reports find their maximum expression in funeral rituals, considered all as practices to express the beliefs of a particular cultural group of people. On the other hand, the phenomenon of burial dressed and its immediate consequence is that the presence of the furniture in burials, can address the socio-economic relations of communities through the expression of a set of physical phenomena such competitiveness, solidarity and cultural assimilation. A fundamental aspect from the analysis of the grave goods, looks characterization ornamental elements with exogenous influence, a question that refers to the concept of ethnicity in the Migration Period and the possibilities of archaeology to determine the cultural identity of buried people
Thesis, Lyon 2, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012LYO20001/document.
Testo completoThis work is founded on the study of three funerary complexes of outlying suburbs located in the capital cities of Mediomatrici (Metz-Divodurum), Nervii (Bagay-Bagacum) and Morini (Thérouanne-Tervanna). Our study is based on a corpus composed of more than 480 funerary structures, which has been amended by the data issued from the other funerary discoveries carried out in these three cities, from the 18th century to nowadays. Based upon that documentation, we propose an analysis of funerary practices in use in the North of Gaul and more particularly in the province of Gallia Belgica and of their evolution in the first three centuries of our area. The first part of this work is related to the organization of the funerary areas in an urban context through the analysis of different parameters: places and settlement dynamic of funerary areas, internal organization and space structuring as well as the mode of distribution of the structures (functional, chronological and social). The following chapters are related to the understanding and interpretation of the different funerary practices and gestures, which may have been observed during the study of the structures of our corpus. To do that, we have tried to reconstruct the different steps of the funerary process and to replace the whole practices in the order in which they took place. First, we took an interest in the data connected with the stage of the body cremation, data observed during the excavation of the funerary pyres, through the examination of the pit structure, the methods of treatment of the body as well as the role and the origin of the grave goods used around the pyre. Then, we moved on to the place of final deposition of the remains by presenting the constituent elements of the grave, the different types of funerary structures we have been confronted with as well as the varied modes of deposition of the bones and their organization within the sepulchral pit. A specific attention has also been given to the steps which are relative to the transfer and to the modes of deposition of the bones of the deceased in the grave as well as the practices and body movements which follow that. Finally, in a last chapter, we have analyzed the different deposits of the funerary goods in order to define as well as possible the different gestures which were pointed out through the archaeological remains, and which were made at the time of the composition of the grave but also throughout the funeral or during the memorial feasts where respects to the deceased were paid. This overall study is based on a detailed catalogue of the tombs which is composed of two volumes (volume 1: Metz “Avenue André Malraux”, volume 2: Bavay “La Fache des Près Aulnoys” and Thérouanne “Les Oblets”) displaying by chronological phases the observations made during the excavation work, the inventory of the grave goods, as well as the results of the studies of animal and human bones rests

Testo completoThis thesis explores male-female relationships within societies of the North Alpine world. The reflection is based on a corpus of more than 1000 graves spread over north-eastern France, Southern Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Bohemia. This corpus is twofold : a first part is dedicated to cemeteries and reveals the existence of a social hierarchy in these societies ; a second part focuses on the elite’s graves that multiplied from Late Bronze Age to the middle of second Iron Age. The study of these burials required the development of methodological tools for interpreting the corpus in terms of wealth and gender in order to question the relationships between male and female. This funerary data was completed with ancient textual and iconographical data and broadened with a consideration of gender relations in contemporary and neighboring societies of the North-Alpine world. These elements enabled to clarify the development that affected male and female relationships, as well to highlight important periods of emergence of women and finally to draw interpretative hypotheses on the social structures of the considered north Alpine societies

Testo completoThis work starts with the study of three rural sites situated in mediomatric territory, leuque and atrebate : Mecleuves (Moselle), Contrexeville (Vosges) and Loison-sous-Lens (Pas-de-Calais). Archeological and anthropological studies practiced on the structures and osseous remains of these sites, allows a concentrated approach of the defunct who, put in perspective with data of many other regional sites, offers the occasion to examine the question in a larger way. In this way, a data base has been realized with the purpose to inventory and to characterize the funeral sites of the regions of Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Lorraine. Starting from this documentation, first the implantation of funeral area`s in the landscape has been treated, especially in their relation with living structures and other elements of the landscape (paths, parcels of land…). A second approach treats the inner organization of the funeral space : its materialization, its surface, arrangement of tombs and other structures…The funeral structure on its own is approached in a more detailed way, to differentiate the cremation areas, secondary graves and annexed structures to the tomb that belongs to the funeral rites and accompanies the defunct. Finally, the osteological studies are compared with the archeological data (especially the funeral fittings), to develop more in general the management of the cremated remains

Testo completoFinal Bronze Age and First Iron Age communities (10th - 5th century B. C.), situated between the Garonne and the Ebro Rivers are essentially known though their cremation burial cemeteries. This work, based on an abundant documentation of more than 400 cemeteries, intends to approach the question of the funeral practices under a new point of view, by realizing a synthesis of the archaeological data on a large geographical scale to get an overall view of the funerary practices and their dynamics throughout time. After introducing the important background notions and discussing the chronological elements (proposal of an inter-regional chronological system), we suggest studying a selection of cremation burial cemeteries well documented. These cemeteries will be studied according to a grid of analysis which will allows us to realize statistical analyses to study possible funeral groups. The results of these analyses are explained in a chronological way which give us the opportunity, in a second time, to discuss the geographical distribution of these funeral groups and their evolution in time and space

Testo completoStudy, on the basis of 162 characters from 179 perfectly preserved frozen burials, of the cultural evolution of the settlement of Yakutia from the 16th century to the 19th century. The Yakuts, people from north-eastern Sibe- ria, Turkic speaking, cattle and horse breeders, are surrounded by Siberian speaking people, reindeer herders. Divided into several tribes before the Russian colonization, they will experience in contact with the Russians a "golden age" before being assimilated into the Russian Orthodox culture in the 19th century. Their frozen tombs, with intact cultural and biological data, together with historical data and this particular ecological context place their cultural evolution as an exceptional school case for human-environment interaction and for the human and social sciences. After a descriptive study of the characters, multivariate, descriptive and decisional studies, comparing differences between ages, sexes, lineages, periods, geographical groups, are carried out; it is followed by a phylogenetic analysis. The first analyses demonstrate the economic and religious changes linked to chronological evolution, while phylogeny provides hypotheses on cultural transmission, differentiated according to sex. A phase of synthesis allows us to confirm the southern origins of the Yakut culture, to identify its mechanisms of adaptation, then of evolution in the face of Russian colonization, and finally to recognize its modes of transmission and diffusion that have made it evolve from a traditional way of life to a Russian orthodox way of life

Testo completoBeringia, a vast landscape stretching from eastern Siberia to the Yukon Territory, is thought to be the initial entry point of humans into North and South America. At the end of the Pleistocene, this unglaciated region constituted a refugium for the first prehistoric populations dispersing out of Asia. According to genetic and palaeogenetic data, Beringia was occupied during the Last Glacial Maximum (19 000-23 000 cal BP, calibrated years before present) by a human population that remained genetically isolated for about 8000 to 9000 years, leading to the divergence of the Native American lineage that would eventually disperse south of the ice-sheets into North and South America. The « Beringian standstill hypothesis » is not well supported in the archaeological record, however: in eastern Siberia, the oldest archaeological site is dated to 32 000 cal BP while in Alaska and the Yukon, evidence for a human presence doesn’t exceed 14 000 cal BP. Excavated in the 70s-80s, the Bluefish Caves site (Yukon) yielded stone tools and bone remains thought to have been culturally modified, buried in a Pleistocene loess deposit; the discovery encouraged archaeologists J. Cinq-Mars and R. Morlan to propose that humans occupied the caves sporadically between about 11 000 and 30 000 cal BP. The anthropogenic nature of the bone samples submitted for radiocarbon analysis and the stratigraphic integrity of the site didn’t convince the scientific community, however. The current dissertation proposes a rigorous archaeozoological and taphonomic analysis of the mammal bone assemblages of Caves I and II in order to identify the agents responsible for the accumulation and modification of the bone material. The results show several cut marks on bone specimens belonging to horse, caribou, wapiti and possibly bison and Dall sheep, while mammoth skeletal remains may have been collected for bone industry. New radiocarbon dates obtained by an Oxford laboratory (Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit) on bone bearing indisputable evidence of cultural modification allow the precise dating of the human occupation at the site. The AMS dates suggest that the Bluefish Caves were occupied sporadically between 12 000 to 24 000 cal BP, i.e., during and after the Last Glacial Maximum. The site, therefore, offers archaeological support for the Beringian standstill hypothesis. The taphonomic history of the Bluefish Caves, as well as other Beringian karstic sites, shows use of the caves by various carnivores and short-term human occupations for hunting activities. Moreover, cultural modifications on horse bone from Caves I and II enhance the debate surrounding the megafaunal extinctions at the end of the Pleistocene (ca. 14 000 cal BP). The site underlines the incompleteness of the archaeological record and invites us to expand research efforts in Beringia if we are to understand the prehistory of the first people of the Americas.
