Abstract (sommario):
The remains in Montefeltro of the material structures of the medieval mendicant orders still constitute a fresh archive of data useful for casting light on the formal and technological transformations that took place in the first two centuries of its history. The book looks for the first time into the type of settlements of the Franciscan and Augustinian orders through the historical, archaeological, historico-artistic and petrographic analysis of the elevations of six convents dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

Abstract (sommario):
Since its publication in 1982, the Archaeological Gazetteer of Afghanistan has become the main reference work for the archaeology of Afghanistan, and the standard sites and monuments record for the region; archaeological sites are now referred to under their Gazetteer catalogue number as routine in academic literature, and the volume has become a key text for developing research in the area. This revised and updated edition has been significantly expanded to incorporate new field-work and discoveries, as well as older field-work more recently published, and presents new cases of synthesis and unpublished material from private archives. New discoveries include the Rabatak inscription detailing the genealogy of the Kushan kings, a huge archive of Bactrian documents, Aramaic documents from Balkh on the last days of the Persian empire, a new Greek inscription from Kandahar, two tons of coins from Mir Zakah, a Sasanian relief of Shapur at Rag-i Bibi, a Buddhist monastic 'city' at Kharwar, new discoveries of Buddhist art at Mes Aynak and Tepe Narenj, and a newly revealed city at the Minaret of Jam. With over 1500 catalogue entries, supplemented with concordance material, site plans, drawings, and detailed maps prepared from satellite imagery, the Archaeological Gazetteer of Afghanistan: Revised Edition is the most comprehensive reference work on the archaeology and monuments of the region ever undertaken. Cataloguing all recorded sites and monuments from the earliest times to the Timurid period, this volume will be an invaluable contribution to the renewed interest in Afghanistan's cultural heritage and an essential resource for students and researchers.

Abstract (sommario):
Re-excavating Jerusalem: Archival Archaeology is concerned with the archaeology and history of Jerusalem. It is a story of ongoing crises, of adaptations, inheritance and cultural transmission over many centuries under successive rulers, where each generation owed a cultural debt to its predecessors, from the Bronze Age to the modern world. It is not a summary history of occupation over four millennia, but rather a reflection of events as revealed in a major programme of archaeological excavation conducted by Dame Kathleen Kenyon in the 1960s, which is still in process of publication. The excavation archive has an ongoing relevance, even though knowledge of the city and its inhabitants has increased over the decades since then, revealing fresh insights to set against contemporary work. The preservation of such archives has great importance for future historians. Among topics addressed are the nature of a dispersed settlement pattern in the 2nd millennium BC; a fresh look at the vexed problems of the biblical accounts of the work of David and Solomon and the development of the city in the 10th and 9th centuries BC; the nature of the fortifications of the town re-established by Nehemiah in the 5th century BC; some evidence of the Roman occupation following the almost total destruction of the city in AD 70; and an exploration within the Islamic city during the 12th to 15th centuries. The latter illustrates the endless interest in Jerusalem shown by the outside world.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter concentrates less on producing and distributing goods than on storing and transporting them within and across the Roman Empire. Roman law seems to have provided an adequate legal framework for activities linked with managing storage space and organising the transport of commodities over short and long distances. This is an area of law where juristic opinions can be confronted with documentary evidence such as inscriptions (leges horreorum), tablets (Puteolan archive of the Sulpicii), and papyri (maritime loans), as well as archaeological remains. Storage and transport involved capital investment and know-how, and required special attention to the nature of the goods and the activities of people as economic actors.

Abstract (sommario):
The book ventures to look into eras bygone in order to chronicle the passage of three mega species—the rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), tiger (Panthera tigris), and elephant (Elephas maximus)—across millennia in early north India. It carefully sifts through an archive comprising faunal remains and visual depictions retrieved from the archaeological record as well as a gamut of Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, and classical Western accounts to document the presence of these mega animals in various cultural niches from hunter-gatherer societies to the first urban civilization of India and beyond. The narrative goes beyond treating these species as mere cultural icons to one that is also sensitive to their importance as markers of ecology. The focus is two-fold: to comprehend perceptions, attitudes, and sensibilities oscillating between veneration and persecution in order to reconstruct the cultural dimensions of human–megafaunal relations in the past, as also to use these species to understand the larger ecology of ancient India. At a time when the conservation of our megafaunal heritage is a major concern for biologists, ecologists as well as conservationists, this book underlines the need to historicize human interactions with these mega mammals keeping in mind that an animal’s past is critical in thinking about its future.

Abstract (sommario):
Chapter 2 explores various antiquarian, archaeological, and art historical evidence in order to reconstruct the decorative program of the Baths of Caracalla to the fullest extent possible, given the incomplete remains on site and the gaps in the archaeological and archival records. By tracing the materials scattered today between various museums, storage facilities, and private collections, the chapter compiles documentation for all art media (sculpture, mosaic, stucco, etc.) and assembles a comprehensive catalogue of the Baths’ decoration arranged according to provenance (secure, probable, or hypothetical) within the bath complex. Building on these provenance attributions, the chapter concludes by assessing decorative hierarchies and establishing decorative priorities within the Baths of Caracalla.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This Handbook provides a transnational reference point for critical engagements with the legacies of, and futures for, global archaeological collections. It challenges the common misconception that museum archaeology is simply a set of procedures for managing and exhibiting assemblages. Instead, this volume advances museum archaeology as an area of reflexive research and practice, addressing the critical issues of what gets prioritized by and researched in museums, by whom, how, and why. Through 28 newly commissioned chapters, authors problematize and suggest new ways of thinking about historic, contemporary, and future relationships between archaeological fieldwork and museums, as well as the array of institutional and cultural paradigms through which archaeological enquiries are mediated. Case studies embrace not just archaeological finds, but also archival field notes, photographic media, archaeological samples, and replicas. Throughout, museum activities are put into dialogue with other aspects of archaeological practice, with the aim of situating museum work within a more holistic archaeology, one that does not privilege excavation or field survey above other aspects of disciplinary engagement. These concerns are grounded in the realities of museums internationally, including those in Latin America, Africa, Asia, Oceania, North America, and Europe. In so doing, the common heritage sector refrain ‘best practice’ is not be assumed to solely emanate from developed countries or European philosophies, but will instead be considered as emerging from, and being accommodated within, local concerns and diverse museum cultures.

Abstract (sommario):
The physical remains of the ships that came to an untimely end at the shores of the southern African region represent an important part of the maritime cultural heritage. Yet, very few scientific investigations into this heritage have been undertaken to date, as a result, no archival record or archaeological evidence of local vessels being produced here exists. The known potential of shipwrecks therefore consists of vessels that originated from elsewhere. The first part of this article sketches the physical geographic setting of the region's shores and the adjacent coastal waters. Following this, some aspects relating to southern African shipwreck archaeological investigations are discussed. This article also gives information aspects of specific studies in maritime archaeology that have been undertaken in the southern African region so far.

Abstract (sommario):
This volume explores the climates, landscapes, ecosystems and hazards that comprise the Mediterranean world. It traces the development of the Mediterranean landscape over very long timescales and examines modern processes and key environmental issues in a wide range of settings. The Mediterranean is the only region on Earth where three continents meet and this interaction has produced a very distinctive Physical Geography. This book examines the landscapes and processes at the margins of these continents and the distinctive marine environment between them. Catastrophic earthquakes, explosive volcanic eruptions and devastating storms and floods are intimately bound up within the history and mythology of the Mediterranean world. This is a key region for the study of natural hazards because it offers unrivalled access to long records of hazard occurrence and impact through documentary, archaeological and geological archives. The Mediterranean is also a biodiversity hotspot; it has been a meeting place for plants, animals and humans from three continents throughout much of its history. The Quaternary records of these interactions are more varied and better preserved than in any other part of the world. These records have provided important new insights into the tempo of climate, landscape and ecosystem change in the Mediterranean region and beyond. The region is unique because of the very early and widespread impact of humans in landscape and ecosystem change - and the richness of the archaeological and geological archives that chronicle this impact. This book examines this history and these interactions and places current environmental issues in long term context.

Abstract (sommario):
A Struggle for Heritage draws on extensive archaeological, archival, and oral historical research and sets a remarkable standard for projects that engage a descendant community left out of the dominant narrative. Matthews demonstrates how archaeology can be an activist voice for a vulnerable population’s civil rights as he brings attention to the continuous, gradual, and effective economic assault on people of color living in a traditional neighborhood amid gentrification. Providing examples of multiple approaches to documenting hidden histories and silenced pasts, this study is a model for public and professional efforts to include and support the preservation of historic communities of color.

Abstract (sommario):
Empires of Antiquities is a history of the rediscovery of the imperial civilizations of the ancient Near East in a modern imperial order that evolved between the outbreak of the First World War and the decolonization of the British Empire in the 1950s. It explores the ways in which near eastern antiquity was redefined and experienced, becoming the subject of imperial regulation, modes of enquiry, and international and national politics. A series of globally publicized spectacular archaeological discoveries in Iraq, Egypt, and Palestine, which the book follows, made antiquity material visible and accessible as never before. The book demonstrates that the new definition and uses of antiquity and their relations to modernity were inseparable from the emergence of the post-war international imperial order, transnational collaboration and crises, the aspirations of national groups, and collisions between them and the British mandatories. It uniquely combines a history of the internationalization of archaeology and the rise of a new “regime of antiquities” under the oversight of the League of Nations and its institutions, a history of British attitudes to, and passion for, near eastern antiquity and on-the-ground colonial policies and mechanisms, as well as nationalist claims on the past. It points to the centrality of the new mandate system, particularly mandates classified A in Mesopotamia/Iraq, Palestine, and Transjordan, formerly governed by the Ottoman Empire, and of Egypt, in the new archaeological regime. Drawing on an unusually wide range of materials collected in archives in six countries, as well as on material and visual evidence, the book weaves together imperial, international, and national histories, and the history of archaeological discovery which it connects to imperial modernity.

Abstract (sommario):
The Introduction situates the chapters within the frame of Chris Wickham’s own trajectory of scholarship. It emphasizes Chris’s commitment to working across national linguistic and historiographical boundaries, and outlines how the editors to arrange the chapters so that they respond not only to Chris’s more recent, pan-European studies, but also to specifics of his archival work on Tuscany, including his work on dispute settlement. The introduction highlights the problems of written records, as well as the importance of new archaeological data for examining the late Roman transition and settlement patterns. Finally, it highlights the utility of looking for comparisons, for which Chris is rightly celebrated.
