Janse, van Rensburg Philippus Jacobus. "Investigating the feasibility of an indoor aquatic centre for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/791.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of an Indoor Aquatic Centre for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole. The main problem was to establish the minimum aquatic facilities an Indoor Aquatic Centre must have, to be able to host National and International aquatic events. The sub problems identified to address the main problem were as follows: - Should accommodation be available at the Indoor Aquatic Centre? - Should medical facilities be available at the Indoor Aquatic Centre? - Should there be a gymnasium at the Indoor Aquatic Centre? - Should there be food malls available at the Indoor Aquatic Centre? - Will sports tourism in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole benefit from an Indoor Aquatic Centre? In this study the researcher discusses current tourism opportunities, possible sports tourism opportunities and the current aquatic facilities the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole has to offer. From the discussion regarding these issues it was found that the metropole do offer many attraction opportunities including the following: - Adventure and Sport; - Agriculture; - Arts and Culture; - Business and Conferencing; - Coastal and Beaches; - Entertainment and Shopping; - Historical; - Wild Life and Nature. Adventure and Sport attractions contribute to sports tourism in the metropole and an Indoor Aquatic Centre could enable the metropole to improve sports tourism figures to the metropole. Sports tourism is defined as any tourism that is linked with a sports event. The conclusion can be made that the main initiative for sports tourism is to host a major sporting event to attract tourists. Adding other tourist attractions makes the destination more attractive. It is also important that the community is educated and informed about sports tourism so that the tourist and the community benefits from the event. Indoor Aquatic Centres found in countries like Australia, Canada, Europe, Russia, The Far East, United Kingdom and the United States of America, were discussed to identify the minimum requirements for an Indoor Aquatic Centre. The literature study has shown that the Indoor Aquatic Centre should be a multi purpose centre with a minimum of two heated pools and leisure facilities included. This will enable the centre to generate different streams of income to enhance sustainability. The aquatic centre should also be designed to host National and International events, but not necessarily for Olympic Games events. An empirical study was done to see if the respondents agree on the minimum requirements for an Indoor Aquatic Centre, identified by the literature study and if they agree that sports tourism within the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole will benefit from an Indoor Aquatic Centre. The conclusion of the empirical study is that the respondents’ view correlate with the information found during the literature study regarding the minimum requirements for an Indoor Aquatic Centre listed as follows: - The minimum number of heated pools are two consisting of a fifty metre ten lane pool and a twenty five metre ten lane pool; - A food mall that consists of a restaurant, fast food stalls and a food store; - Medical facilities, conference facilities, gymnasium and other leisure facilities must also be available; - Accommodation facilities must be available and consists of two and three bedroom fully serviced apartments; - The Indoor Aquatic centre must be able to have seating for 2000 people and parking for 1000 vehicles. The study has addressed the main problem and the sub problems, but further research needs to be conducted regarding the funding of the Indoor Aquatic Centre as this issue was not successfully addressed. More information is needed regarding the different ways of funding and who the stakeholders should be in this process.

Timar, Levente. "Modeling the Anthropogenic Spread of an Aquatic Invasive Species: The Case of Zebra Mussels and Transient Recreational Boating in Wisconsin". NCSU, 2008. http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/theses/available/etd-07112008-122212/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Transient recreational boating is the principal overland vector of dispersal for several freshwater invasive species. Traditional models of human-mediated aquatic invasions use aggregate data on boating patterns, and are unable to incorporate changes in boater behavior. This limits their practicality because most control policies, by targeting the human vector, are expected to have behavioral consequences, and a complete policy assessment needs to consider the resultant shift in invasion pressure. In this dissertation, I develop a framework that utilizes site choice probabilities from a travel cost recreation demand model to quantify anthropogenic invasion threat to a water body. This integrated behavioral approach enables the researcher to trace the effects of any perturbation that elicits a behavioral response, and to translate them into changes in site-specific invasion probabilities. I employ spatial and temporal data on the distribution of zebra mussels in Wisconsin, and the results of a large revealed preference boater survey in the state to empirically implement the model. Finally, I demonstrate via counterfactuals that a control policy that reduces the desirability of an infested choice alternative is less effective than a traditional model would imply. In some situations, the policy may be not only expensive in terms of lost consumer surplus, but also counterproductive in terms of increasing (instead of decreasing) the probability of zebra mussel spread to the uninfested water bodies it is designed to protect. Similar unintended consequences would be impossible to identify in a traditional, non-behavioral approach.

Grant, Lionel DeShaun. "Recreational Water Users, Aquatic Invasive Species and Fish Disease: Examining the Usage of Tailored Messaging to Increase Environmental Responsible Behaviors". OpenSIUC, 2012. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/893.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to discover how to efficiently use tailored messaging to increase recreational water users' behavioral intentions to perform specific behaviors that prevent the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) and Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS). The objectives were to identify the most effective message structure and message order for signs targeting seven behaviors that reduce the spread of AIS and VHS, and to examine the moderating effect of AIS and VHS knowledge and awareness on behavioral intentions. The population of this study consisted of students 31 years of age and younger attending Southern Illinois University Carbondale (μ = 21.06; n = 680). The study design tested messages according to the Optimal Arousal Theory. The respondents completed an 11-item questionnaire that measured knowledge, awareness, and behavioral intentions, and included one of 34 sign treatments. When asked how knowledgeable respondents were about AIS and VHS, 48% of respondents indicated that they were not knowledgeable. Respondents were also asked the extent to which they believed AIS is a problem in Illinois; 43% reported AIS to be a "moderate" problem. Seven (7) items on the questionnaire measured intention to perform specific behaviors that may reduce the spread of AIS and fish disease between water bodies. Knowledge and awareness (only when interacting with knowledge) were found to be covariates of behavioral intentions. Complex results were revealed regarding the most effective tailored message, as no one sign significantly increased all seven behavioral intentions and the number of treatments significantly increasing behavioral intentions varied by behavior (i.e., 11 treatments had a significant influence on the behavioral intention for "visual inspections;" 4 treatments had a significant influence on the behavioral intention for "drain water;" 8 treatments had a significant influence on the behavioral intention for "avoid bait release;" 6 treatments had a significant influence on the behavioral intention for "remove plants and animals;" 4 treatments had a significant influence on the behavioral intention for "flush motor;" and, 11 treatments had a significant influence on the behavioral intention for "rinse boat". Results suggest mainly positively phrased messages works best when trying to stimulate environmentally responsible behavior (ERB). The recommendations from this study encourage strategic use of communication to enhance natural resource management as this study yielded gains in predicted behaviors of respondents to reduce the spread of AIS and VHS. The study also demonstrates the need to increase recreational water users' AIS and VHS knowledge improve the likelihood that they will perform desired behaviors.

Ismail, Salim. "Investigation of the suitability of aquatic invertebrates as biological indicators for detecting the presence of Campylobacter spp. in recreational water supplies". Thesis, University of Canterbury. Department of Plant and Microbial Sciences, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4247.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Campylobacter species, the most frequent cause of acute bacterial gastroenteritis in humans, are of worldwide significance. Drinking and recreational surface waters have been identified as a major vehicle of pathogenic Campylobacter spp. transmission to humans. Outbreaks of campylobacteriosis as well as sporadic cases have been reported both locally and internationally. However, in only a small proportion of cases has the responsible organism been isolated from the implicated water source. The inherent difficulties with isolation of Campylobacter spp. from environmental water sources make the development of more reliable, alternative isolation and detection methods a preferred option. In this study, the potential for aquatic invertebrates to act as biological indicators for detecting Campylobacter spp. from recreational water was investigated. The suspension and filter feeding strategies of aquatic invertebrates allowing them to concentrate Campylobacter cells to readily detectable levels within their tissues was explored. Sampling of water, mussels, cockles and snails from the Avon-Heathcote rivers and estuary revealed low isolation rates with no apparent correlation between Campylobacter presence in water and the invertebrates. Placement of freshwater mussels in the Avon and Heathcote rivers proved successful for isolation of Campylobacter spp., while marine mussels, cockles and snails routinely tested negative. Hence, the freshwater mussel was chosen as a candidate bio-indicator. In vitro (tank) experiments showed close correlation between Campylobacter detection in mussels and water. However, isolation of Campylobacter from mussels was deemed to be no better than testing the water itself. Environmental Campylobacter isolates were analysed by resistotyping, flaA PCR-RFLP typing and PFGE to determine relationships between isolates. Although very few isolates were found to be clonal, a high level of genetic relatedness was determined between isolates from the Avon and Heathcote rivers. This indicates a common source of input between these rivers, most likely to be from birds. A validation study for the use of the cadF virulence gene as a marker for PCR detection of pathogenic Campylobacter species was under taken. Although useful for distinguishing Campylobacter spp. in pure culture, this system was found to show a degree of unreliability for specific detection from environmental samples.

The birth population in Taiwan has been declining year by year. Many literatures support moderate exercise to help the development of the fetus. Especially in the third trimester, there are general problems of lower extremity edema and low back pain. The hydrostatic pressure is used to reduce the burden during pregnancy, but it is based on traditional practices in Taiwanese pregnant women. The attitude towards the use of recreational activities in the waters is still conservative. In this study, pregnant women were surveyed using the safety and health awareness of recreational activities in the waters during pregnancy. The facets included: efficacy identification, consumption cognition, risk identification and safety and health identification in the use of water recreation activities during pregnancy. The survey targets pregnant women in Chiayi and Tainan. There are 137 valid questionnaires. The results showed that the willingness to use recreational activities in the waters during pregnancy was only 38, compared with 68 in the non-pregnancy period, a clear 56% difference. In any case, respondents had a high level of recognition for the use of recreational activities in the waters during pregnancy, with 85.4% of those who agreed and strongly agreed to improve sleep quality. A survey of consumption perceptions in the field of recreational activities in the waters shows that pregnant women have the highest demand for “emergency SOS” conditions, and 97.1% agree and agree. The risk identification survey using leisure activities during pregnancy showed that “water quality sanitation management conditions” was the first choice, with 94.9% consent and non-consensus. According to the safety and health approval survey, "the difference between water temperature and room temperature is too large" is the worrying item that pregnant women think is the safest and the healthest, and the agreement and the unrecognized person are up to 84.7%. Cross-analysis results show that the socio-economic background is different, and the efficacy identification, consumption cognition, risk identification and safety and health identification of the use of water leisure activities during pregnancy, and most cross-analysis items all show significant differences in chi-square test, but cross-analysis The items are still quite different from each other. On behalf of the pregnant women's society and the background of pregnancy, their views are still different. It means that the leisure activities of the waters should provide a multi-use thinking and relatively safe and healthy environment for pregnant women. In addition, the fear of increasing the risk of miscarriage is the reason for indirectly affecting the frequency of recreational activities in the waters during pregnancy. The research results suggest that in the era of user payment, the industry should comprehensively examine the needs of the consumer groups, and should indirectly reflect the service quality management of hardware equipment and water quality sanitation and safety to obtain consumer recognition.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT: This document describes an internship report about the end prototyping phase of a scuba diving system and the creative process of an aquatic platform in the company Snorkel Dive Innovations, located in Klagenfurt, south of Austria. Snorkel Dive Innovations focus on the conceptualization of aquatic equipment and holds a product that will soon be commercialized called STEP Dive. The company exists roughly for two years and its supported financially by the Wirtschaftskammer Kärnten (WKK), the local Carinthia Economic Chamber that represents business interests towards the regional government and public authorities. The Step Dive was created with the educational purpose of introducing Scuba diving for the younger users through the collective practice with an experienced supervisor this product is the only diving system that allows more than one person to dive at the same time allowing the users to have a more social and inclusive approach to diving. The project of the platform will be a pontoon type vessel: it will use the economic benefits provided by high pressure hoses that will act as inflatable pontoons, some elements from the Step dive´s raft and another typology of boat to define. Pontoons are structures, generally cylindrical, located under the deck that support the vessel and allow it to float. Their advantages for the platform are the great stability and simple functionality that, combined with the high-pressure hoses, create an economical and easy to transport\ assemble product consisting its main exclusive sailing propositions in the market. The inflatable pontoons eliminate the necessity of storing it in a harbor not polluting the air, water or disturbing the harbor area in any way, this also cases a reduction on the taxes applied on the owners creating a more appealing product. My contribution in the Step Dive consisted in adding and redesigning components in the harness where I used both interventionist and non- interventionist methods. The interventionist methods were quasi-experience on which I tested the prototype in a non-aquatic environment, and active investigation using formulation of hypothesis. The only non-interventionist method used was Delphi because I used the feedback from my supervisor in the company. For the water vessel, the process was more conceptual requiring only the quasi-experience non-interventionist, active research and observation.

The purpose of this study was to explore the status quo of elementary school teachers’ aquatic sport participation and recreational constraint factors, and to analyze teachers’ different constraints and participation with different backgrounds variables and tendencies of aquatic sport participation and further to explore the relationships between the aquatic sport participation and recreational constraints. The researcher selected 400 subjects for this study, resulted in the377 effective respondents, the effective return rate was 94 percent. The analytic approaches include Descriptive statistics, one-way MANOVA and canonical correlation analysis. The findings of the research are listed as below: (1)In terms of aquatic sport participation, the elementary school teachers in Pingtung showed a low of participation. (2)Among these teachers, there is remarkable difference of aquatic sport participation between each of them, which is shown in several background variables, such as: gender, marriage status and swimming capacity. (3)With regard to the leisure constraint, the main element is “personal” factor. (4)The interaction between background variables and leisure constraint is greatly influenced by the variables of gender, teaching experience and swimming capacity. (5)Among these teachers, there is no significant correlation between aquatic sport participation and recreational constraints.
