Abstract (sommario):
Why some democratic revolutions succeed while others fail? The scholarly community has sought to address this issue from various perspectives, from rational choice approaches to collective action theories. Too little attention, however, has been paid to analyzing the role of the military. By discussing the different types of interactions played by the military in five cases of successful democratic revolutions—the 1910 Portuguese Republican Revolution, the 1958 Venezuelan Revolution, the 1960 April Revolution in South Korea, the 1989 Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, and the 2000 Bulldozer Revolution in Yugoslavia—and three cases of failed revolutions, the 1905 bourgeois-liberal revolution in Russia, the 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests in China, and the 2016 Turkey’s coup attempt, this study finds out that the key factor in determining their outcome is the army’s response and that the military backing is a necessary condition for a democratic revolution to succeed.

da, Silva Marinho Cristina M. "Celebrating the April Revolution in the Portuguese Parliament : discursive habits, constructing the past and rhetorical manipulation". Thesis, Loughborough University, 2012. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/9774.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the political language and the ideological construction of the national past at the annual commemoration of the April 25 Revolution in the Portuguese parliament. The language of politics during these State commemorations is complex. The speakers of the ceremony are not expected to engage in the everyday politics but to celebrate and remember together the overthrow of the previous regime that occurred on April 25 1974. Nonetheless, behind apparent acts of unity and communion there is political controversy about the nature of the event and its celebration. Mostly this controversy cannot be expressed openly. In order to register the ideological and controversial aspects of these commemorations, the thesis looks at both the overt and the hidden language of the commemorative speeches from left and right political parties. Specifically, the official parliamentary transcripts of the commemorative speeches from left and right political party are analysed at different levels using different methodologies: broad quantitative content analyses of large numbers of speeches and fine critical discursive analysis of specific parts of particular speeches. A broad quantitative content analysis of wole speeches reveals the patterns of themes and terms mentioned in the speakers accounts of the past. By looking at the presence and absence of explicit themes and terms, the analysis suggests that accounts of the past in the parliamentary commemoration of the April Revolution differ along political and ideological lines. This is also apparent in the customary ways of greeting the audience right at the start of the speeches. This analysis combines a quantitative content analysis of the formal greetings over time with an analysis of the rhetorical meanings of particular terms. The analysis of greetings also shows the sexism of the customary and also the development of ritual forms. In order to examine the complexity of this sort of speech, it is necessary to move to in-depth qualitative analysis of parts of specific speeches. The analysis of the beginnings of two speeches given at the 2004 commemoration, namely, from the speaker of the far-right Democratic and Social Centre/Popular Party (CDS-PP) and from the far-left Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), shows that both speakers presented controversial versions of the past but did not do so in direct ways. The speaker from the CDS-PP uses a number of rhetorical devices including omissions and distortion in order to conceal his meanings, while appearing to celebrate a Revolution to which his party was ambivalent. On the other hand, the speaker from the PCP also uses manipulative devices but he does not do so in order to hide the ideology of his message but to make it clearer. The thesis argues for the importance of analysing hidden ideological messages as well as for distinguishing between a speaker manipulating the presentation of their ideology and a speaker manipulating the evidence in order to present their ideology clearer.

Abstract (sommario):
The subject of intelligence is still rather unknown in Portugal, and until now only the military ones approached this theme. The University began quite recently the study of these materials, as a part of Strategy and Strategic Studies. This essay is an example of how became of academic interest the learning of the period of the Portuguese history when the transition, at the level of intelligence, from dictatorship to democracy happen. In a country where persists the Estado Novo political police’s syndrome, the PIDE-DGS, the study of such matters assumes always a major responsibility. That is why we propose to answer the key and essential question, «what are the main differences in the production and use of the intelligence during the Estado Novo and after the Revolution of April 25th, 1974?», trying to describe and compare how the intelligence was produced and used in a dictatorial regime and as it is today in a democratic rule of the law. So, an analysis is made of the scope, means and supervisory mechanisms inherent to intelligence services in each one of the historical periods, including the former DGS and the current SIRP.

Abstract (sommario):
The Egyptian 2011 revolution is presented in media - as well as statements made by organisations participating in the overthrowing of Hosni Mubarak's regime - as a social media revolution. Despite the fact that internet has been shut down on the government's order on 28th January, just after three days of street protests, therefore forcing the social media revolution to go offline. This paper describes the role of social media in the events of the beginning of the revolution via qualitative content analysis. It focuses on the official Facebook communication of two prominent anti-Mubarak organisations - We Are All Khaled Said and April 6th Youth Movement - in the period between 9th January and 11th February, from the day of first invitation to a 25th January protest to the day Hosni Mubarak resigned. I have identified following sub-themes in the revolution-themed posts: 25th January - the nature of the event, the role of the activist group, organisation, internet shutdown, safety measures, propagation, news reporting, Facebook and event evaluation. The result of my research is that Facebook - albeit important - was only one of the tools of communication, propagation and organization actively employed by both of the anti- Mubarak groups. While useful - and actually promoted as a tool to save Egypt by...

Diogo, Cláudia. "A reforma agrária em Idanha-a-Nova". Master's thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/3254.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Agrarian Reform in Portugal arises in a revolutionary context, being a result of the Carnation Revolution in 25 of April, 1974. Workers occupied the large properties of the south and formed new production units, based on a system of collective management. The present historical research will analize the case of Beira Baixa, in the north of ZIRA (Zone of Intervention for Agrarian Reform), Idanha-a-Nova. The land issue in Idanha-a-Nova always provoked disagreements between the richest and the poorest, who lived in an area where agrarian collectivism and individualism stood strong. This county was marked in the twentieth century by poor living and working conditions, and had a high mass of temporary workers plagued by seasonal working conditions, famine and repression by large landowners. The Agrarian Reform gave hope of better working and living conditions to the inhabitants of the fields of Idanha-a-Nova. In this study, we present occupations, analyze the new production units and follow their development until its decline in the 80's.

Duarte, António Manuel de Sousa. "Movimento de 1383 e 25 de Abril de 74 – burgueses e capitães, do «putsch» à revolução". Doctoral thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10437/6291.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The 1383-85 Movement and the 25 April 1974 Revolution are two key moments in Portugal’s history. The proto-bourgeois nature of the 1383-85 Movement, which made a direct contribution to the genesis of a new dynasty; and the democratic regime, deriving from the military intervention in the Carnation Revolution, were underpinned by specific social, corporative and professional groups, who openly defined themselves as threats to the established systems. A set of relevant common aspects can be found in both instances: the popular support that proved a decisive factor in the victory of the rebelling forces; the shift from a “putsch” coup or uprising to a single-day revolution; and the leadership characterized by charismatic figureheads. This dissertation looks into the consolidation of the bourgeois as an emerging social group in 1383-85, a phenomenon that contains obvious similarities to the social discontent, the germ of the institutional rebellion instigated by the Captains’ Movement (the 1974 bourgeois), and attempts to prove the hypothesis of an analogy between the two moments of history, namely as regards the contribution of the people and the individuals King João I and Salgueiro Maia.

Abstract (sommario):
The article offers a culturological vision of publicity, and partly correlative privacy as universal aspects of the joint existence of people. The analysis methodology is based on the perception of culture as a universal specific way of existence of people and society; the perception of society as a sociocultural system; the perception of the evolution of society and all areas of its existence as a result of their holistic sociocultural determination. Publicity is considered in terms of its characterisation as a sociocultural phenomenon (space-time, socioanthropological, functional, communicative, discursive), and then the evolution of publicity as a function and the product of the cultural system is outlined. The main (and diverse) sociocultural influential factors having determined substantial changes in features of publicity (and its relationship with privacy) as from the second half of the 20th century to the present day are analysed: left-wing influence and democratisation of societies after World War Two; rising prosperity of citizens; origination of consumer society; release of public psychology from some conventional cultural taboos including as a result of secularisation and the sexual revolution; widespread and influential mass-media; informational revolution (information society). Critical effects of these factors in respect of publicity and its evolution have been shown. The information revolution of the second half of the 20th century to the early 21st Century is considered as the crucial factor of the radical qualitive transformation of social life, processes of its institutionalisation and with it, public and private spheres. Peculiarities of contemporary online publicness and its relationship with online privacy are addressed. Axiological problems of online publicness are highlighted.

Abstract (sommario):
Student centered. Demonstrable outcomes. Center of gravity shifting from learned to learner. Learn by doing. Collaboration. Critical thinking. Student responsible for learning. Deeper learning. Ongoing feedback. Outcome assessment. Priority on how, not where, a student learns. Life-long learning opportunities. Global access 24/7/365. Effectiveness. Efficiency. Revolution. These are but a few of the touted promises of distributed education (DE) that are supported by new and evolving web based information technologies (IT). Education periodicals bombard their readers with heralds of the IT community’s pledge to revolutionize education out of the industrial age of Taylorized mass production of passive students and into the knowledge age of life long active learners. Notable educators predict DE will profoundly affect the traditional classroom, forcing it to follow the DE classroom in becoming more of a student centered active learning environment. (Carnevale, April, 2001; Newman & Scurry, 2001; Toward a model of distributed learning, 1999) Is there any truth to this hype?

Abstract (sommario):
The article shows the connection of Kondratiev's theory of long waves and the crisis of 2023 with the digital information revolution taking place in the modern world. It describes the cycles (patterns) of five long periods of development of the world economy, which have already taken place and were accompanied by recessions and rises, and also provides a forecast of the development of the leading sectors of the national economy in the context of the sixth technological order.

Abstract (sommario):
Joseph (Iosif) Isaakovich Badeev (real surname Suslik) was born in 1880. He graduated from an agricultural school and worked as a gardener before the revolution. From 1903 to 1915 he was a member of the Bund, and from 1917 he was a member of the Communist Party. One of the founders of the communist underground organization in Bessarabia and the creation of the Moldovan ASSR in 1924. I. Badeev considered the Moldovans a separate ethnic group from the Romanians, advocated the Moldovan language and led a group of originalists (samobytniki) in the leadership of the Moldovan Autonomous Republic. In 1924—1928, he actively participated in discussions on these issues with Ion Dicescu-Dik and Grigory Stary. At the suggestion of the Central Committee of the CP (b) of Ukraine, he was included in the Bessarabian Commission of the Communist International, at whose meetings he defended this point of view, in contrast to the opinion of Al. Badulescu and Ekaterina Arbore-Rally. During the “Romanian operation” I. Badeev was arrested and on October 8, 1937 he was sentenced of death. Shot on October 11, 1937. Rehabilitated on April 4, 1957.

Abstract (sommario):
Recently Additive Manufacturing (AM) has been hailed as the “third industrial revolution” by The Economist magazine [April-2012]. Precision of the product manufactured by AM largely depends on the on line process diagnostics and control. AM caters to the quest for a material to suit the service performance, which is almost as old as the human civilization. An enabling technology which can build, repair or reconfigure components layer by layer or even pixel by pixel with appropriate materials to match the performance will enhance the productivity and thus reduce energy consumption. With the globalization, “Economic Space” for an organization is now spreads all across the globe. The promise of AM for Global Platform for precision additive manufacturing largely depends on the speed and accuracy of in-situ optical diagnostics and its capability to integrate with the process control. The two main groups of AM are powder bed (e.g. Laser Sintering) and pneumatically delivered powder (e.g. Direct Metal Deposition [DMD]) to fabricate components. DMD has closed loop capability, which enables better dimension and thermal cycle control. This enables one to deposit different material at different pixels with a given height directly from a CAD drawing. The feed back loop also controls the thermal cycle. New optical Sensors are either developed or being developed to control geometry using imaging, cooling rate by monitoring temperature, microstructure, temperature and composition using optical spectra. Ultimately these sensors will enable one to “Certify as you Build”. Flexibility of the process is enormous and essentially it is an enabling technology to materialize many a design. Several cases will be discussed to demonstrate the additional capabilities possible with the new sensors. Conceptually one can seat in Singapore and fabricate in Shanghai. Such systems will be a natural choice for a Global “Economic Space”.
