Abstract (sommario):
IntroductionBipolar disorder (BD) typically starts in adolescence or young adulthood (early-onset; EO-BD), which may have different backgrounds and consequences than late-onset (LO) BD. There are controversies over pre-pubertal age of onset (AoO).ObjectivesTo give an overview of the various concepts of AoO in BD, the impact of AoO on subsequent illness course, and findings of the Stanley Foundation Bipolar Network (SFBN) with relationship to AoO.Methodsliterature review and additional analyses of SFBN database.ResultsBD usually begins with a depressive episode. SFBN-data reveal that an earlier AoO is associated with a less favourable prospective illness course (more depression, mood instability and rapid cycling), longer delay to first treatment, past history of suicide attempts, being abused in childhood abuse, more psychiatric and medical comorbidities. Comparison of the US sample with the European sample of SFBN showed an earlier onset in US patients.Conclusionand early AoF of BD is associated with a poorer long-term outcome, despite adequate current treatment.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his declaration of competing interest.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper presents a consolidation solution to a damaged construction due to its emplacement on difficult foundation soils and inadequate foundation design. Because of the long building operation, many difficulties arise out of structures some frequently met being produced by the unequal settlement of soil, incomplete design of foundation systems or adoption of constructive solutions for foundations apart from design stipulations. To carry out the sustainable performance of structures and actual deformations of structures, foundations, and foundation soils, the current characteristics of the materials being used are necessary to be assessed as well as to evaluate and identify the proper measures to bring them up to the imperative level that ensures safe, reliable and efficient operation. The paper aims to bring in practical ways for the rehabilitation of structures influenced by the inappropriate foundation design as well as difficult sites presenting not only some real deficiencies arisen in structural elements but also methods and technologies used to enhance the performance of constructions in terms of structural capacity and serviceability. The paper shows specific causes that produce structural degradations and the results got from a case study defining two possible solutions emphasising that the consolidation works are specific to each and every building needing experience in expertise, design and execution.

Abstract (sommario):
For the design of wind turbines it is necessary to consider several conditions such as: wind, turbulence, temperature variations, geology and characteristics of foundation soils on site, earthquake and neighborhood restrictions. The selection of the types and dimensions of the wind turbines foundations are dependent on the geotechnical conditions, the maximum power of turbines and the type of tower. This paper presents various tower structures correlated with the corresponding types of foundations currently used for wind turbines. For this research, the authors performed a variety of analyses and studies involving different characteristics of the locations for the wind turbines. The research shows the solutions obtained for the pile foundations and their impact upon the environment. The paper points out the influence of the pile length on the slope stability as resulted for the soil stratification from the investigated locations.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Strong gravitational lensed quasars (QSOs) have emerged as powerful and novel cosmic probes as they can deliver crucial cosmological information, such as a measurement of the Hubble constant, independent of other probes. Although the upcoming LSST survey is expected to discover 103–104 lensed QSOs, a large fraction will remain unresolved due to seeing. The stochastic nature of the quasar intrinsic flux makes it challenging to identify lensed quasars and measure the time delays using unresolved light-curve data only. In this regard, Bag et al. introduced a data-driven technique based on the minimization of the fluctuation in the reconstructed image light curves. In this article, we delve deeper into the mathematical foundation of this approach. We show that the lensing signal in the fluctuation curve is dominated by the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the derivative of the joint light curve. This explains why the fluctuation curve enables the detection of the lensed QSOs only using the joint light curve, without making assumptions about QSO flux variability, nor requiring any additional information. We show that the ACF of the derivative of the joint light curve is more reliable than the ACF of the joint light curve itself because intrinsic quasar flux variability shows significant autocorrelation up to a few hundred days (as they follow a red power spectrum). In addition, we show that the minimization of fluctuation approach provides even better precision and recall as compared to the ACF of the derivative of the joint light curve when the data have significant observational noise.

Abstract (sommario):
A time series prediction model was developed to predict the number of confirmed cases from October 2022 to November 2022 based on the number of confirmed cases of New Coronary Pneumonia from January 20, 2021 to September 20, 2022. We will analyze the number of confirmed cases in the Philippines from January 1, 2020 to September 20, 2022 to build a prediction model and make predictions. Among the works of other scholars, it can be shown that time series is an excellent forecasting model, particularly around dates. The study in this work begins with the original data for inference, and each phase of inference is based on objective criteria, such as smooth data analysis utilising ADF detection and ACF graph analysis, and so on. When comparing the performance of algorithms with functions for time series models, hundreds of algorithms are evaluated one by one on the basis of the same data source in order to find the best method. Following the acquisition of the methods, ADF detection and ACF graph analysis are undertaken to validate them, resulting in a closed-loop research. Although the dataset in this study was generated from publicly available data from the Philippines (our data world for coronaviruses), the ARIMA model used to predict data beyond September 20, 2022 exhibited unusually high accuracy. This model was used to compare the performance of several algorithms, each evaluated using the same training data. Finally, the best R2 for the ARIMA model was 92.56% or higher, and iterative optimization of the function produced a predictive model with an R2 of 97.6%. This reveals the potential trajectory of coronaviruses in the Philippines. Finally, the model with the greatest performance is chosen as the prediction model. In actual implementations, several subjective and objective elements, such as the government’s epidemic defence measures, the worldwide pandemic condition, and whether the data source distributes the data in a timely way, might restrict the prediction’s accuracy. Such prediction findings can be used as a foundation for data releases by health agencies.

Abstract (sommario):
INTRODUCTION. Intravenous loop diuretics have been a key component in treating pulmonary oedema since the 1960s and have a Class 1 recommendation in the 2021 guidelines for acute heart failure (AHF). While the diuretic effect of loop diuretics is well established, it remains unclear how furosemide influences pulmonary congestion and cardiac filling pressures in the hyperacute phase before significant diuresis occurs. METHODS. This was a prospective study of adult patients with AHF and objective signs of pulmonary congestion admitted to the cardiac ward. Remote dielectric sensing (ReDS) will directly measure lung fluid content, and cardiac filling pressures will be assessed by echocardiography with Doppler and strain analysis. CONCLUSIONS. This study will examine if furosemide leads to a hyperacute reduction in pulmonary congestion assessed by ReDS independent of diuretic effects in patients with AHF. We hypothesise that the haemodynamic effect of furosemide shown on pulmonary congestion may explain the subjective instant relief in patients with AHF receiving furosemide. FUNDING. Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the scientific heritage of the outstanding Russian hydrobiologist A.F. Alimov. Showing a deep scientific interest not only in the problems of aquatic ecology, but also in zoology, he laid the foundations of the functional ecology of animals as a common area of interest for ecology and zoology. Further, his views were successfully used in studying functional ecology of different groups of aquatic animals and on their basis important generalizations were carried out on productivity and energy flows through aquatic ecosystems and communities. An important stage in his scientific work was the development of a structurally functional approach to the study of the functioning of ecological systems of water bodies and watercourses. He showed that their structural and functional parameters are naturally interdependent. This approach allowed quantification of changes in the ecosystems of water bodies exposed to various types of environmental stress. To describe the response of aquatic ecosystems to external factors, A.F. Alimov proposed an original interpretation of the steadiness and endurance of ecological systems. As a result, he laid the foundation for a quantitative assessment of the influence of various factors, including anthropogenic, on aquatic ecosystems. The proposed measures of steadiness and endurance of populations, communities, and ecosystems made it possible to assess quantitatively the degree of influence of factors on aquatic communities and the ecosystem as a whole. A.F. Alimov made a great contribution to the development of theoretical ecology. He gave an original definition of the ecosystem and formulated the main provisions of the theory of the functioning of aquatic ecosystems. Of great importance for ecology and biology in general are the works of A.F. Alimov on the territoriality of animals and on mechanisms that determine the number of species in aquatic ecosystems depending on the morphometry of water bodies, their trophic status, geographical location and degree of water mineralization. Of crucial importance for theoretical biology is a series of his works devoted to the biological (physiological) time of organisms. Based on strict mathematical analysis, he convincingly showed that organisms exist in their own internal time, the speed of which depends on the rate of the processes occurring in the body and is closely related to its mass.

Abstract (sommario):
The mouse is a promising model system for auditory cortex research because of the powerful genetic tools available for manipulating its neural circuitry. Previous studies have identified two tonotopic auditory areas in the mouse—primary auditory cortex (AI) and anterior auditory field (AAF)— but auditory receptive fields in these areas have not yet been described. To establish a foundation for investigating auditory cortical circuitry and plasticity in the mouse, we characterized receptive-field structure in AI and AAF of anesthetized mice using spectrally complex and temporally dynamic stimuli as well as simple tonal stimuli. Spectrotemporal receptive fields (STRFs) were derived from extracellularly recorded responses to complex stimuli, and frequency-intensity tuning curves were constructed from responses to simple tonal stimuli. Both analyses revealed temporal differences between AI and AAF responses: peak latencies and receptive-field durations for STRFs and first-spike latencies for responses to tone bursts were significantly longer in AI than in AAF. Spectral properties of AI and AAF receptive fields were more similar, although STRF bandwidths were slightly broader in AI than in AAF. Finally, in both AI and AAF, a substantial minority of STRFs were spectrotemporally inseparable. The spectrotemporal interaction typically appeared in the form of clearly disjoint excitatory and inhibitory subfields or an obvious spectrotemporal slant in the STRF. These data provide the first detailed description of auditory receptive fields in the mouse and suggest that although neurons in areas AI and AAF share many response characteristics, area AAF may be specialized for faster temporal processing.

Abstract (sommario):
Abscisic acid (ABA) is a plant hormone that plays an important regulatory role in plant growth and stress response. The AREB (ABA-responsive element binding protein)/ABF (ABRE-binding factor) are important ABA-signaling components that participate in abiotic stress response. However, genome-scale analysis of ABF/AREB has not been systemically investigated in tomato. This study was conducted to identify tomato ABF/AREB family members and analyze their response to ABA and abiotic stresses. The results show that a total of 10 ABF/AREB members were identified in tomato, which are randomly distributed on five chromosomes. Domain analysis showed that these members exhibit high protein similarity, especially in the basic leucine zipper (bZIP) domain region. Subcellular localization analysis indicated that all 10 ABF/AREB members are localized in the nucleus. Phylogenetic tree analysis showed that tomato ABF/AREB genes are divided into two groups, and they are similar with the orthologs of other plants. The analysis of cis-acting elements showed that most tomato ABF/AREB genes contain a variety of hormones and stress-related elements. Expression profiles of different tissues indicated that SlABF2 and SlABF10 play an important role in fruit ripening. Finally, qRT-PCR analysis revealed that 10 tomato ABF/AREB genes respond to ABA, with SlABF3 being the most sensitive. SlABF3, SlABF5 and SlABF10 positively respond to salt and cold stresses. SlABF1, SlABF3 and SlABF10 are significantly induced under UV radiation treatment. SlABF3 and SlABF5 are significantly induced in osmotic stress. Overall, this study may provide insight into the role of tomato ABF/AREB homologues in plant response to abiotic stresses, which laid a foundation for future functional study of ABF/AREB in tomato.

Abstract (sommario):
The presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the rhizosphere has been shown to exert a substantial influence on plant disease resistance. The colonization of AMF induces a cascade of defense responses in plants, resulting in heightened resistance to pathogen invasion. The current study unveils the essential role of AMF in initiating systemic defense responses in plants. When plants undergo colonization by AMF, they initiate a variety of molecular and biochemical mechanisms that enhance their immune system. These systemic defense responses equip the plant with the ability to both withstand invading pathogens and ready neighboring uninfected tissues for potential future attacks. In addition, the establishment of AMF in the roots can induce physical alterations in the root architecture, thereby increasing the difficulty for pathogens to infiltrate and infect plants. While there have been notable advancements in understanding the overall impact of AMF colonization on plant disease resistance, further investigation is needed. Future investigations should delve into the mechanisms of AMF colonization on plant disease resistance, with a particular emphasis on elucidating the signaling pathways and biochemical factors that trigger systemic defense responses. This will offer valuable insights into the molecular foundation of plant immunity and aid in the development of precise disease management strategies. AMF can also serve as biocontrol agents for sustainable management of plant diseases, thereby decreasing dependency on chemical pesticides and encouraging environmentally-conscious practices. The efficiency of AMF colonization and the expression of plant defense responses can be significantly altered by environmental factors, such as soil conditions and nutrient availability. Comprehending these factors will facilitate the formulation of efficient management tactics to enhance biotic interactions in agricultural systems.

Abstract (sommario):
Marna Pease (1866-1947) was the founder of Biodynamic farming in Britain. The ‘Anthroposophical Agricultural Foundation’ (AAF) was inaugurated at the ‘World Conference on Spiritual Science and its Practical Applications’ (WCSS), London, July 1928, with Marna as the Honorary Secretary. Under the auspices of the AAF, Marna shepherded the fledgling Anglo Biodynamic (BD) movement through the turbulent times of the Great Depression (1929-1939), the Great Anthroposophy Purge (1935), and World War II (1939-1945). Marna stepped down in 1946. By that time there were reportedly over 400 members of the AAF. With Dr Carl Alexander Mirbt, she produced the first BD preparations in Britain at her home, Otterburn Tower, Northumberland. She took up the role of Honorary Secretary of both the AAF and the ‘Experimental Circle of Anthroposophical Farmers and Gardeners’. The AAF initially operated out of Otterburn (315 miles north of London, 74 miles south of Edinburgh). Marna was a member of the Executive Council of the Anthroposophical Society in Great Britain. She relocated to the Old Mill House at Bray-on-Thames (30 miles west of London) in 1930. Marna typed, bound, and despatched copies around the world, of the English translation of Rudolf Steiner’s ‘Agriculture Course’, to those who joined the Experimental Circle. She edited the first Biodynamics journal in English: ‘Anthroposophical Agricultural Foundation Notes and Correspondence’. Marna provided members with the BD preparations and she published BD pamphlets. She established a showcase Biodynamic garden and apiary at Bray-on-Thames. She recruited members, hosted visitors, and maintained an international correspondence with enquirers and members. Marna hosted Carl Mirbt (aka Mier) and his family, first at Otterburn and then at Bray. She hosted Dr Eugen Kolisko, Lilly Kolisko, and their daughter at Bray. Lilly’s ‘Biologisches Institut am Goetheanum’ (Biological Institute at the Goetheanum) relocated from Stuttgart to Bray in 1935. Marna was fluent in German and she translated Steiner’s ‘Nine Lectures on Bees’ (published 1933) and Lilly’s ‘The Moon and the Growth of Plants’ (published 1938). Marna’s legacy continues with the Biodynamic Agricultural Association (BDAA) in Britain, and with BD agriculture in the Anglo-sphere presently accounting for 30% of global BD agriculture.

Abstract (sommario):
Toona ciliata var. pubescens, known as “Chinese mahogany”, has high commercial value and is classified as a level II priority protected wild plant in China. However, due to overexploitation and its poor natural regeneration capacity, natural T. ciliata var. pubescens forests show varying degrees of decline in habitat adaptability. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) symbiosis presents a potential strategy to enhance its regeneration. In this study, T. ciliata var. pubescens seedlings were inoculated with Septoglomus viscosum, followed by RNA-Seq analysis to compare gene expression differences between AMF-inoculated (AMI) and non-mycorrhizal (NM) treatments three months post-inoculation. A total of 16,163 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were upregulated by AMF colonization, constituting 96.46% of the total DEGs. Specifically, 14,420 DEGs were exclusively expressed in the AMI treatment, while 35 DEGs were completely silenced. Most of the upregulated DEGs were located on the cell membrane, nucleus, and cytoskeleton and functioned in protein binding, S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methyltransferase activity, and lipid binding during cellular/macromolecule/protein localization, intracellular/protein transport, the cell cycle, and signal transduction. Additionally, lots of key genes related to oxidative stress responses, nutrient transport, and small GTPase-mediated signal transduction were found to be upregulated. These results suggest that AMF inoculation may enhance root cell growth by activating genes involved in nutrient uptake, stress responses, signal transduction, and substance transportation. This study elucidates the molecular mechanisms underlying the growth promotion of T. ciliata var. pubescens through AMF symbiosis, laying a foundation for the future application of AMF in its natural forest regeneration.

Abstract (sommario):
Ascorbate oxidase (AO) plays important roles in plant growth and development. Previously, we reported a cotton AO gene that acts as a positive factor in cell growth. Investigations on Gossypium hirsutum AO (GhAO) family genes and their multiple functions are limited. The present study identified eight GhAO family genes and performed bioinformatic analyses. Expression analyses of the tissue specificity and developmental feature of GhAOs displayed their diverse expression patterns. Interestingly, GhAO1A demonstrated the most rapid significant increase in expression after 1 h of light recovery from the dark. Additionally, the transgenic ao1-1/GhAO1A Arabidopsis lines overexpressing GhAO1A in the Arabidopsis ao1-1 late-flowering mutant displayed a recovery to the normal phenotype of wild-type plants. Moreover, compared to the ao1-1 mutant, the ao1-1/GhAO1A transgenic Arabidopsis presented delayed leaf senescence that was induced by the dark, indicating increased sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) under normal conditions that might be caused by a reduction in ascorbic acid (AsA) and ascorbic acid/dehydroascorbate (AsA/DHA) ratio. The results suggested that GhAOs are functionally diverse in plant development and play a critical role in light responsiveness. Our study serves as a foundation for understanding the AO gene family in cotton and elucidating the regulatory mechanism of GhAO1A in delaying dark-induced leaf senescence.

Abstract (sommario):
BIM technology comprises the digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of the building or structures. It provides the architectural model, engineering, and professional construction with the collaboration of construction projects in an efficient and effective manner. BIM technology can be used to create 3D models of transportation hubs, which can help visualize and simulate different scenarios, optimize space utilization, and improve safety. With detailed 3D models and simulating different scenarios, BIM technology can help optimize space utilization, improve safety, and enhance the overall travel experience for passengers. Core architectural design refers to the fundamental design principles and elements that form the foundation of a building or structure. Hence, this research designed Artificial Intelligence (AI) integrated fuzzy set (AIF-BIM) model for the transportation hub construction. The design of the AIF-BIM model uses the associative rule-based model for the design of the transportation hub. With a designed AI model BIM technology is integrated for the examination of design, construction, and operation. Through the AIF-BIM model, the transportation hub engineering architects are evaluated for the different phases such as the design phase and construction phase. Simulation analysis stated that the application of BIM technology with AIF – BIM in transportation hubs can improve their design, construction, and operation.

Abstract (sommario):
In Model Driven Software Engineering (MDSE), Action Language for Foundational UML (ALF) is a new standard for specifying the structure and behavior of a system textually. To update/transform existing systems with respect to advance business needs and/or by the change in the dependent technology, this standard can play a vital role in reverse engineering a system for technology change. In this paper, using ALF, we propose a reverse engineering approach for transforming object oriented system. Our work is the first attempt to use ALF in reverse engineering. Using a case study (an ATM system) of significant size developed in C[Formula: see text], we validate the feasibility of our approach. In this paper, to support our approach by a computer application, we created a tool CPP2ALF; this tool converts the C[Formula: see text] code to srcML code by using a third party srcML-tool and then generates the ALF code by using the generated srcML code.

Abstract (sommario):
In order to develop a cost-effective carbon fiber reinforced polymer sensor for compressive strain monitoring, a study was carried out to assess electrical and piezoelectric properties of samples containing five different carbon fiber weight percentages. Testing focused on sensing ability throughout measurement of resistivity: (1) when submitted to uniaxial variable compressive strain; (2) to time prolonged relaxation at constant strain; (3) and influence of environment temperature on measurements. Results enabled the possibility of usage for live monitoring of samples by determining sensitivity values of each sample being tested. Electrical resistance measurements assessment test results, show real time resistivity change in respect to experienced strain. Further piezoelectric properties where determined. An exponential decay function was found in fractional resistance in respect to relaxation due to constant strain testing. The total amount of time needed for measurements to present an error less than 1% at the probes was determined and found to vary up to seven days. Strain reversibility of resistivity measurements varied according weight percentages of carbon fibers used in composite sample being tested. Samples were tested in situ for monitoring of displacement on foundations of a dwelling to be built, placed on foundation’s soil. The main objective here was to assess practical questions such as handling and how measurements could be made safely. Results demonstrated successful monitoring during construction phase with easy deployment on site, sensing each construction phase loading.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Using observations of basal topography, ice thickness and modern accumulation rates, we use theory and a dynamic flowline model to examine the sensitivity of Antarctica's Foundation Ice Stream to changes in sea level, accumulation and buttressing at the grounding line. Our sensitivity studies demonstrate that the steep, upward-sloping basal topography inland from the grounding line serves to stabilize retreat of the ice stream, while the upward-sloping submarine topography downstream from the grounding line creates the potential for significant advance under conditions of modest sea-level lowering and/or increased accumulation rate. Extrapolating from Foundation Ice Stream, many nearby Weddell Sea sector ice streams are in a similar configuration, suggesting that the historical and projected responses of this sector's ice streams may contrast with those in the Amundsen or Ross Sea sectors. This work reaffirms that the greatest concerns for rapid West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) retreat are locations of reverse slopes, muted basal topography and limited lateral support.

Abstract (sommario):
Ukraine stands out among European countries concerning HIV epidemiological data. Since February 2022, the military conflict with Russian forces has posed unprecedented challenges to HIV prevention and care. AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), a global non-profit organisation with operations in Ukraine since 2009, implemented a preparedness plan to protect staff members and support local facilities in the continuity of care throughout the war. In this manuscript, we describe the strategies adopted by AHF to anticipate the risk of military conflict, steps to implement a preparedness plan, main challenges faced by local staff members and managers, adaptations needed as the conflict evolved, and indicators of HIV care 1 year before and 1 year after the onset of the conflict. Our experience shows that safeguarding the organisation’s human resources has been a prerequisite to sustain services throughout the war.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Active TB case finding (ACF) is a key strategy employed by the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (NTBLCP) to address the increasing gap in TB case finding in Nigeria. KNCV TB foundation Nigeria rolled out two high-impact ACF interventions; TB Surge and the Wellness on Wheels (WoW) campaigns from January 2020.Method: The TB Surge intervention supports the engagement of ad hoc staff for TB ACF. The WoW campaign employs a mobile diagnostic unit to deliver care to the doorstep of people at risk of TB. Data along the TB cascade are recorded for all clients using the CommCare app. Cochran-Armitage χ2 test for linear trend was used to assess the significance declining trends along the TB cascade. Results: There was a progressive decrease of respectively 63%, 64%, 73% and 72% in clinic attendance, presumptive TB identification, TB cases detected and treatment initiation for the TB Surge ACF intervention since the emergence of coronavirus; a similar decrease was noted for the WoW intervention. Trend analysis showed a significant decline in trends for both interventions for all variables (P < 0.001)Conclusion: The COVID-19 epidemic has impacted negatively on TB services in Nigeria. The TB programme could leverage some resources used to combat the epidemic such as digital health technology and funds, and work towards strengthening patient-centred approach to care to limit the challenges that COVID-19 presents to TB control.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This study examines how job satisfaction in six sub-scales and selected stressors and demographic covariates influenced assisted living administrators’ (ALF) intentions to quit during the COVID-19 pandemic. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 103 ALF administrators as part of a national study of long-term care administrators’ intent to quit during the COVID-19 pandemic funded by the Foundation of the National Association of Long-Term Care Administrator Boards in Washington, DC. Descriptive statistics were collected for the sample, and correlations between variables were examined, as well as responses from 3 open-ended questions that were coded for analysis. Although generally satisfied, roughly 41 percent of ALF administrators reported that they were intending to quit. Qualitative data suggested that job satisfaction was influenced by a more nuanced interpretation of job characteristics and work environment intrinsic factors such as adequacy of staffing and resources, changing regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic, and external supports such as family and friends. Given the limited research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on assisted living communities and their administrators, the results of this study can help to inform policies and strategies for providing support for this segment of long-term services and its workforce during widespread disasters.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractNumerical ice-sheet models are commonly matched to surface ice velocities from InSAR measurements by modifying basal drag, allowing the flow and form of the ice sheet to be simulated. Geophysical measurements of the bed are rarely used to examine if this modification is realistic, however. Here, we examine radio-echo sounding (RES) data from the Weddell Sea sector of West Antarctica to investigate how the output from a well-established ice-sheet model compares with measurements of the basal environment. We know the Weddell Sea sector contains the Institute, Möller and Foundation ice streams, each with distinct basal characteristics: Institute Ice Stream lies partly over wet unconsolidated sediments, where basal drag is very low; Möller Ice Stream lies on relatively rough bed, where basal drag is likely larger; and Foundation Ice Stream is controlled by a deep subglacial trough with flow-aligned bedrock landforms and smooth unconsolidated sediments. In general, the ice-sheet model represents each ice-stream system well. We also find that ice velocities do not match perfectly in some locations, and that adjustment of the boundaries of low basal drag, to reflect RES evidence, should improve model performance. Our work showcases the usefulness of RES in calibrating ice-sheet model results with observations of the bed.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The criticality of the physicochemical properties of the K3AlF6-Na3AlF6-AlF3 molten salt system to electrolytic aluminum production is a topic of great interest. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate the impact of Zr, B, C, W, Ti, Hf, Nb, and Ta on various properties including the radial distribution function, coordination number, viscosity, and conductivity of the 23.4K3AlF6-54.6Na3AlF6-22AlF3 molten salt electrolyte under conditions of 1173 K and standard atmospheric pressure. Significant and noteworthy discoveries were yielded by the simulations. A decrease in the coordination between Al-F and conductivity was brought about by the inclusion of B2-. Likewise, higher Zr4+ content resulted in a decrease in the coordination number between Al-F and viscosity. The impact of carbon was insignificant, while the presence of tungsten reduced the coordination number between Al-F. On the other hand, titanium, hafnium, niobium, and tantalum facilitated the decomposition of Al-F ligands, leading to an increased coordination between Al-F and the ions in the electrolyte. These findings provide valuable insights for future investigations on inert anodes containing Zr, B, Ti, Hf, Nb, and Ta. By understanding the effects of these elements on the physicochemical properties of the molten salt electrolyte, this work lays a solid foundation for further research in the field.

Abstract (sommario):
Radar emitter signal sorting (RESS) is a crucial process in contemporary electronic battlefield situation awareness. Separating pulses belonging to the same radar emitter from interleaved radar pulse sequences with a lack of prior information, high density, strong overlap, and wide parameter distribution has attracted increasing attention. In order to improve the accuracy of RESS under scenarios with limited labeled samples, this paper proposes an RESS model called TR-RAGCN-AFF-RESS. This model transforms the RESS problem into a pulse-by-pulse classification task. Firstly, a novel weighted adjacency matrix construction method was proposed to characterize the structural relationships between pulse attribute parameters more accurately. Building upon this foundation, two networks were developed: a Transformer(TR)-based interleaved pulse sequence temporal feature extraction network and a residual attention graph convolutional network (RAGCN) for extracting the structural relationship features of attribute parameters. Finally, the attention feature fusion (AFF) algorithm was introduced to fully integrate the temporal features and attribute parameter structure relationship features, enhancing the richness of feature representation for the original pulses and achieving more accurate sorting results. Compared to existing deep learning-based RESS algorithms, this method does not require many labeled samples for training, making it better suited for scenarios with limited labeled sample availability. Experimental results and analysis confirm that even with only 10% of the training samples, this method achieves a sorting accuracy exceeding 93.91%, demonstrating high robustness against measurement errors, lost pulses, and spurious pulses in non-ideal conditions.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the present experiment was to determine if the supply of biofertilizers could differently stimulate the native microbiota, thus determining different patterns of organic material decomposition processes. The microbial composition of soil and litter was investigated by next generation sequencing using a metabarcoding approach. The chemical structure of the decomposing litterbags was investigated through the TG-DTA analysis and NIR spectroscopy. The study was conducted in an apricot orchard in Italy, and two different type of biofertilizers (AMF and Trichoderma spp.) were compared to unfertilized control over one year. Bacteria and fungi in soil, 162 days from litter deposition, evidenced differentiated clusters for control and both biofertilizers; on the other hand, only fungal composition of litterbags was modified as a consequence of Trichoderma spp. supply; no effect was observed in the bacterial community of litterbags. NIR and TG-DTA analysis evidenced a significant change over time of the chemical composition of litterbags with a faster degradation as a consequence of Trichoderma spp. supply testified by a higher degradation coefficient (1.9) than control (1.6) and AMF (1.7). The supply of biofertilizers partially modified the bacteria community of soil, while Trichoderma spp. Influenced the fungal community of the litter. Moreover, Trichoderma spp. Evidenced a faster and higher degradation of litter than AMF-biofertilizers, laying the foundation for an efficient use in orchard.

Abstract (sommario):
The American Chestnut Foundation (ACF) has conducted a breeding program aimed at developing blight-resistant chestnut trees exhibiting the phenotype of American Chestnut (Castanea dentata). We developed a protocol for in vitro micropropagation and multiplication of candidate blight-resistant plants from the ACF breeding program. The protocol included forcing dormant shoots to budbreak, culture establishment, shoot multiplication, inducing a functional root system on the microcuttings produced by this system and establishment of autotrophic plants. Because Castanea spp. is recalcitrant to rooting, a unique bilayer method of rooting was developed. The unique bilayer consisted of a clear basal medium of 50% DKW and 50% WPM (Long and Preece), with a continuous level of 0.01 mg IBA/L and 0.2 mg BA/L. The clear basal medium was over-laid with an opaque layer. Rooting response occurred for 27 of the 31 genotypes at various frequencies. Rooted plantlets were planted in 50% peat: 50% perlite in order to become autotrophic and acclimated. Acclimated trees were planted in 10″ × 2″ Deepots® and placed in the greenhouse. These trees exhibited a very vigorous functional root system. Acclimated trees were hardened off, placed in cold storage (≈4-5 °C) for 5 months. All trees placed in cold storage broke dormancy for spring growth and ≈100 trees were sent to ACF for planting into field trials.

To study the vibrations of a Multiparker lift lift model, use various models for the lifting mechanism. In order to increase the number of parking spaces in the center of the Romanian capital, it is intended to design a parking lot on several levels above the Dâmbovița river, which would include two elevators for lifting and lowering cars. One of the elevators works as a system of translating cam and roller translating follower and thus, due to transmitting the torque from the electric drive motor to the cam, respectively changing the travel direction at the end of the route, upon starting and stopping, vibrations may occur within the elevator. This system must be supported on a foundation in order to achieve anti-vibration isolation. There are several possibilities to achieve this anti-vibration isolation, among which one can mention the elastic suspensions mounted on springs, rubber mats or standardized elastic rubber elements
