Testo completoBetween the 17th century and the first half of the 19th century, temples figure in good place in the itinerary of travelers. Literature is at first their only reference for identifying and understanding these places of worship. In the middle of the 18th century, Caylus published his Recueil d’Antiquités which privileges the strict archaeological point of view for the study of monuments. This epistemological upheaval is reflected on the ground. From excavation techniques to recording and presentation of data, early archaeologists think of remains as objects of knowledge to understand how religious institutions are organized on a territorial scale. However, it is necessary to wait until the beginning of the XIXe century so that the excavation of the temples acquires a scientific rigor. It was during this pivotal period for the history of archeology that appeared the first theoretical essays on the Greek religion. On the religious topography, we wonder about the interest of having the temples away from the dwellings, about the importance given to the urban sanctuaries, about the path of the faithful during the Great Panathenaeans and the supposed link between the location of the temple and the divinity that is dedicated to it. We are also interested in religious architecture. Beyond the aesthetic and technical considerations, the conjectures relate to the destination of the temples, the architectural orders, the polychrome and its effects in the context of religious ceremonies but also on the hypethrum architecture and the interest of the light for the exercise of worship. Complementary to the monumental approach, sculpture is also approached under the prism of religion. They explain the archaism of the pediments of the temple of Aphaia to Aegina by religious superstitions. They wonder about the representation of the god among the Greeks in that it is different from the representation of man. Finally, when the sculptures are in the state of vestiges, the first archaeologists question the myths

Testo completoThe De Verborum Significatione of Festus has been preserved by only one manuscript of the 11th century (Farnesianus, Cod. Neapol. IV. A. 3), incomplete and severely damaged. But most datas date back to Verrius Flaccus, a famous grammarian teaching Augustus’s grandsons. He quotes lots of antiquarians of the last century of the Republic and of the beginning on the Principate. The monographs of these men are still quoted by compilers of the Empire, such as Plinius, Aulus Gellius, Festus or Macrobius. In spite of their different social status and of the different titles, these erudites used to work on the same subjects and resorted to the same tools, such as etymology. They are advisers to powerful men they probably helped to reform traditional religion. The study and translation of 800 articles on 3300, bearing on roman religion, allow us to remark that the description of religion is not exhaustive but centered on the difficulties of traditional rituals. The annexes offer some practical tools to make the use of this lexicon easier, and, a bibliographical directory of various modern works on Festus’ articles
Félix, Geoffroy. "Les savoirs non académiques des antiquaires : contribution à une sociologie de l'irrégularité". Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016USPCC157.
Testo completoThe subject of this study is the circulation process of antique objects and of people in antique shops and galleries in Paris. Chapter 1 is devoted to establishing the notion of non-academic learning of antique dealers from a theoretical perspective by means of a field survey using semi-structured interviews. It emphasizes the peculiar nature of antique dealing, and the bearing that this aspect has had on the field survey. The object is to formulate a theory that explains how antique dealers contribute to the pricing and the « creation » of value of non-homogenous articles, that are exempt from « classic » production costs. Chapter 2 delineates the environment that structures the antique dealer’s life. Its first part analyses the manner in which you start out and orientate yourself in this very independent trade, where division of labour is practically non-existent, leading to the fortunes, reverse of fortunes, and misfortunes connected with prospecting for and authentifying objects. Its second part is a synthesis which reflects the morphology of antique dealing, stressing the linguistic and spatial dimensions inherent to its organization. The 3rd and last chapter is more theoretical. It focuses on the value of antique objects and determining their price. The idea is to bring to light a double coordination of transactions in order to uncover the hinge point between the specific structure of the antiques market as organized by the dealers and the supply and demand dynamics of trade in general

Testo completoMy PhD Thesis deals with the reconstruction of a less known Rabelais than the one of the legend, a philologist, editor of classical texts, based on an analysis of the Poitevine period seen as the origin of his future main projects. My research takes into account the revival of Literary History and Historicism ; I make use of a range of concepts taken from varied disciplines, including philology, history of books and readers, stylistics and poetics, to throw light on the intertextual palimpsest, based on riparographic style, that he opposed to the « Crimson-silken rhetoric » used by court poets. Investigating Rabelais’s workshop consist on studying the genesis of the invention of Pantagruel based on the largest text corpus by Rabelais, including the epic as well as correspondence and peripheric texts, with special focus on Rabelais’s annotated books which are scarce marks of his work in progress. The crux of the research is the dossier of the posthumous Fifth Book, reassessed with focus on the philological and antiquarian paradigm. It makes appear the outlines of an antiquarian fable with parodic background, remains of a road not taken, staging a sodalitas of curious people involved in an initiatory quest which is like a mirror of academic talks and reflections around Lucian of Samosata and the Dream of Poliphilus
Raffarin-Dupuis, Anne. "Les "antiquaires" et les debuts de l'archeologie a la renaissance : la roma instaurata de flavio biondo. (edition, traduction, commentaire)". Paris 4, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1997PA040309.
Testo completoThe roma instaurata had not been printed since the year 1559. This constitutes the first critical edition of the original text. It is also the first modern translation of the writing which had not been translated since 1558. Around thirty manuscripts of biondo's text, all dated end of the fifteenth century, have been thoroughly examined to achieve this work. Both the place accorded to the author and is work, as well as the topographical commentary lay on the philological approach. Generally unknown, the author had to be presented as well as the environnement he lived in and the period during which he produced his writings. The large number of quotations contained in the roma instaurata justifies a specific study of textual sources. Besides, though less important among the sources used by the author, archaeological elements extracted from roman ground are not to be neglected. The method proposed by the author consists in a perpetual confrontation between the sources on the onehand, and the site on the other hand, but also in a comparative analysis of the different sources so as to establish their accuracy. Pragmatism and efficiency appear essential to grasp the roman antiquity. The topographical commentary illustrates how f. Biondo improoved the knowledge of the town. Far from repeating the errors commited by his predecessors during the middle ages, he took advantage of his critical approach. The present thesis aimes also at underlying the fact that biondo used more sources than those he mentionned in the roma instaurata and at comparing his analysis with the maps of rome executed in the late xvth cetury and early xvith. Obviously, the science known as "antiquaria" accomplished tremendous progress thanks to this humanist

Testo completoThis thesis deals with the epigraphical activity of F. Ximenez, the administrator of the Trinitarians hospital at Tunis who, between 1720 and 1735, undertook several excursions in the interior of the Regency. Most of his work remains unpublished, and even and even after being dissected for the publication of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL), a re-reading have been proved to be necessary. Indeed, a certain amount of the information on the inscriptions was yet to be discerned and a significant part extracted from it hasn’t been correctly interpreted. They concern the features of the epigraphical monuments as well as their localisations and the conditions of their discovery. The major blunders committed interpreting the manuscripts of F. Ximenez have created duplications of inscriptions and have let researchers think that some inscriptions came from what it tourned out to be the wrong places. In order to draw up the itineraries of F. Ximenez and to determine the sites of origin of the inscriptions it has been essential to consult the ancient and recent archeological maps, along with a field visit in the country in order to follow his steps, shedding light on the case of his more unclear journeys. This new reading of the manuscripts of F. Ximenez and the comparison with the works of the contemporary travellers have also allowed to recreate the stemmata of the manuscript tradition of inscriptions. The aim has been to analyse the transmission of information between the antiquarians of that time and give back to all of the parties involved what was due to each one of them. These comparisons have led us to analyse the reasons and the interests of F. Ximenez with regard to the ancient inscriptions. What's his main interest concerning the epigraphs? What kind of data does he gather from them and what kind of information does he try to deduce from them? How does he take the tracings? These approaches have allowed to place F. Ximenez within the antiquarians of his time, but in order to do this it has been essential to study the reception which some of them have made of the manuscripts of F. Ximenez. What was the opinion of those scholars on F. Ximenez? How did they use the data he has gathered? We have attempted to answer these as well as other questions in this thesis

Testo completoThe history of the nobility during the 19th century is a historiographical field less strudied by historians. The first of them were the one of David Higgs. Previously, the history of the post-revolutionary nobility was always envisaged as part of elites hystory, such as established by Louis Bergeron and Guy Chaussinand-Nogaret. To envisage the nobility of the specific subject 19th, it is necessary to exceed the balance assessment raisedby Karl Marx and Jean Jaures who wanted to see in the nobility the expression of a calcified society, which has disappeared during the revolutionary events. The first point to be solved is to find a definition of the nobility which allows to establish basis of not ambiguous work. So, the nobility of the 19th century is not any more the one of the Ancien Régime. It is not any more protected by statutes and privileges which she wished herself to rease. Consequently the nobility consists of men and women who have an ethnological consciousness to belong to a group having values and similar behavior. The geographical frame of the search is widened to the set of five Norman departments in order to find and follow the senses of identity of the nobility as well as the influence of bordering Paris. The period extends from 1789 till 1910 to seize all the variations of the political influence of the Norman nobility. The impact of each of the revolutions as well as the role of the nobility in the emergence of the revolutionary movements so enter the field of the study. In a related way will be envisaged the economic and intellectual influences of the nobility, in particular its role on the plans of railroads or on the Société des Antiquaires de Normandie
