Testo completoThis thesis, titled "Multibeam Beamforming Antennas for Navigation" focuses on developing advanced antennas capable of beamforming in the L-band for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals, aiming to enhance reliability and performance in diverse scenario. To achieve this, two innovative approaches have been implemented: a phased array antenna system and a modified 3D printed Luneburg lens. The phased array antenna system include the design of both the antenna array itself, from the sourceelement to the array structure and also the beamformer. The beamformer is composed of multiple stages inter connected by SMA connectors making the complete system extremely flexible and easy to modify. The beamformer is capable of generating multiple beams in the L-band, and can be used to track multiple satellites simultaneously. It's configuration includes a filtering and an amplification stages specifically for GNSS signals. The second technology developped is a modified 3D printed Luneburg lens. The final design of the lens allow the beamforming of up to 16 simultaneously active beams without any mechanical components and providing almost a full-sky view. Multiple versions of the lens and it's source array were developped including dual circular polarization and dual-band configurations. To be able to operate the lens, a custom 16 channel dual-band GNSS receiver was developped. The receiver is capable of tracking all the GNSS signals from all the existing constellations and can be used to track multiple satellites simultaneously. Finally, using the experience gained from the L-band, a Ku-band lens was developped. The lens is capable of generating multiple beams in the Ku-band and can be used to receive signals from recentlow earth orbits (LEO) constellations. The objective behind this lens for the European Space Agencyis to deevelop an alternative navigation system to the GNSS, relying on the signals from the LEO constellations

Testo completoConfocal propagation and Brillouin scattering of phase conjugated acoustical beams using the method of parametrical magneto-acoustics wave phase conjugation (WPC) is experimentally and theoretically studied. In numerical model the matching layer of 1 mm thickness with smooth variation of impedance is proposed to increase acoustic emission. The output of conjugator increasing (8. 1dB) was numerically obtained by such acoustic matching. The existence of accumulative effects in the case of the nonlinear interaction such as Brillouin scattering of the phase conjugated acoustical beams moving in the same direction was shown. The amplitude of the wave of differential frequency (WDF) in the resonant interaction of plane waves exceed the amplitude of WDF in non-resonant interaction more than three orders. Experimental results show that due to local interaction in a confocal system, the amplitude of WDF can be increase by two orders. The phase super sensitivity of WDF according to the position of the object disposed in the focal plan of a confocal system of Brillouin scattering of phase conjugated acoustical waves were shown. Presented results show the possibility to realize a parametric antenna based on the principle of the phase conjugation Stokes component of Brillouin scattering of the ultrasound waves. Developing methods can be used for the creation of ultrasound diffractive tomography devices based on WPC and meant for the detection of local non homogeneities of medium

Testo completoThe work presented in this paper are placed in the context of wireless networks without infrastructure (Ad Hoc) involving the use of sector antennas in a 60 GHz radio channel. The antenna consists of several simple antennas; each intended for a particular sector and may be mechanically switched to activate a single sector. It is thus possible to choose the area of transmitting or receiving data. This type of antenna nevertheless suffers from a problem with this mechanical switching: it cannot be done instantly. At each change of sector, a small amount of time is lost, which reduces the efficiency. This problem is particularly important when the switching time is around the time needed to send a packet: more than half of the bandwidth can be wasted. The state of the art solutions for supporting sector antennas generally do not take into account this switching time and therefore are not adapted to this problem. The thesis is that by taking into account the switching time, it is possible to produce an efficient and adapted protocol stack to this type of antennas. We therefore propose a new optimized protocol stack including the two lower layers of the OSI model. It then remains interoperable with other systems

Testo completoThe evolution of radar systems as well as telecommunication satellites induces the need of simultaneous multibeams for the receive mode. In this thesis we propose two new optical beamforming architectures for the receive mode in network antennas. The former is based on the fiber chromatic dispersion, whereas the latter is an optical coherent architecture based on an optical dual-frequency source. These architectures were firstly analyzed theoretically and secondly their performances were measured. Both are based on two technological blocks that have been studied too: the optical summation and dual frequency optical source locked on a local oscillator. The dynamic behavior of the optical summation was modeled and various technological solutions based respectively on a coupler, a multiplexer or a fiber summation was presented. The WDM channel influence and the interference between optical carriers were analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The optical summation models were applied to summation through a WDM and the theory is in agreement with the measure. As in the case of microwave summation, the optical summation allows a gain on the dynamic range. Then we present the theory allowing to conceive a dual frequency laser locked on an electric signal. The results are very promising, indeed thanks to the use of two lock loops, a stability of about an hour was observed

Testo completoFor more than 45 years, focused ion beams FIB columns based on liquid metal ion sources (Ga) have been used for the development, modification or analysis of nanostructures. Much more recently, less than 10 years ago, plasma sources are integrated in FIBs to meet the needs of failure analysis as well as sample preparation. This plasma FIB market has grown strongly in recent years and is accompanied by a permanent improvement of the specifications of this young technology. Therefore, it is necessary to characterize these sources in order to improve the associated optics. In this thesis, we present the development of a new FIB column working with a plasma ion source, dedicated to the creation of NV centers, as well as the development of a system dedicated to the characterization of the performances of this source.Given the context of this work, the first part of the manuscript is dedicated to the presentation of FIB technology, its operation and its applications. In the second chapter, we present the development of a FIB column dedicated to the implantation of nitrogen ions for the controlled creation of NV color centers in diamonds. We begin by introducing the unique properties of NV centers as well as the usual methods for their creation. Then we present the different steps of the characterization of this FIB column. The implantations carried out during this work have been used for the development of a new application of doped diamonds. In the last chapter of the thesis, we are interested in designing a test bench to obtain the key parameters of the ion source, namely energy dispersion and emittance. The usual methods for measuring these parameters are presented and the operation of the test bench is fully described. Then we then present the measurements made with beams of xenon ions and oxygen ions. Some parameters of the plasma ion source have thus been obtained

Testo completoA feeding sources arrangement installed in an EBG resonator leads to profit at the same time from the array advantages (such as beamforming, nulling patterns, beam steering) and the resonator filtering attributes (spatial filtering, directivity increasing, steering). This report presents a set of steps that is adjusted to the EBG antennas development and design in particular multi sources EBG antennas. First, a spatial function computation is presented. This function results in the EBG resonator filtering attributes. Weighting the EBG resonator by a source radiation pattern allows the defined function to quickly evaluate the EBG performances. The second part focuses on the multi sources feeding problems. The goal of this part is to design and realize two prototypes. Then, the measures come to validate the antenna design. Aside from the resonating attributes of this kind of structure, the design steps are more tricky. Indeed, the EBG antenna intensifies the coupling phenomena between the radiating elements in the multi sources antennas. For this reason, a novel method overcoming the coupling complication was developed

Testo completoThis thesis revisits parasitic elements antennas and offers innovative and effective synthesis design strategies. The main objective of this work is to reveal the full potential of these antennas in order to promote their dissemination. Parasitic elements antennas are presented as cost-effective solutions to achieve beamforming. A dedicated synthesis technique has been developed to obtain performances close to those of antenna arrays, without the disadvantages of a feed distribution network. The latter is complex, expensive and sensitive to manufacturing dispersions, making arrays difficult to design as cost-effective antennas. In this manuscript, generic architectures of parasitic elements antennas are developed. Particular points of versatility, reliability and ease of manufacture have been addressed in order to comply with the requirements of industrial processes. A demonstrator of a reconfigurable parasitic elements antenna has been designed, fabricated and characterized. The successful demonstration allows considering reconfigurable low cost antennas. The skills developed in this thesis have been applied in the context of energy saving in the framework of the Remote Wake Up project (RWU), dedicated to the minimization of standby mode electrical consumption. High efficiency integrated antennas were developed for wireless energy transfer

Testo completo. This report joins within the framework of a project CEDRE (Collaboration between the University of Limoges and the Lebanese university) on the topic of the intelligent antennas in the radio mobile communications. Work consisted with a contribution to the optimization of the lobe of radiation for an intelligent antenna. Two complementary approaches were developed to implement the technique of forming of the lobe, one based on an algorithm of optimization which calculates the phases of the excitations according to the specifications desired (pointed lobe, multiple lobes and creation of the zeros) and the other using the results of the first technique to implement a model with networks of neurons. The first method has a disadvantage concerning the computing time (some seconds), the second is almost an application in real time. The taking into account of the effect of coupling on the radiation was implemented directly in technique of synthesis, and a practical validation of this effect was carried out. Many measurements of an antenna arrays 8 elements, excited only in phase, made it possible to validate our developed tools

Testo completoTo overcome throughput limitations of electron beam lithography, Mapper Lithography designed a machine that can expose with up to 649,740 parallel Gaussian electron beams. In the exposure process, the substrate is divided into 2.2-µm-narrow stripes with a 200 nm overlap. Several parameters need to be controlled: the critical dimensions of the features in the individual stripes; the stitching between the stripes; and the overlay with respect to a previous layer. In this thesis, different optical metrology techniques are explored. Six novel targets for an image based overlay have been developed to measure in-stripe overlay and stripe-to-stripe stitching and are evaluated by total measurement uncertainty (TMU) and measurement time. Scatterometry by spectroscopic reflectometry allows for measurement of non-uniform gratings using an effective critical dimension concept, resulting in a total measurement uncertainty metric down to 0.41 nm (3σ). Stitching can be measured by cross-resonant bow-tie antennae, consisting of four triangles straddling the stitching boundary. Simulations for three different stacks show that the DX and DY stitching errors can be reconstructed independently

Testo completoThis R&T CNES project concerns the design and realization of a Core-chip MMIC system integrated in SiGe BiCMOS technology. The MMIC core-chip system is dedicated to the beamforming for the active satellite antenna. The new solutions for the satellite payloads being developed for telecommunication applications need an increased flexibility at all the levels. More precisely, the system of active antennas allowing an adjustment by real-time electronic command of the terrestrial covered area offers an optimized response for the communication link budget. This performance has a cost: the necessity of a very large number of RF control points "amplitude / phase" of the beamforming equipment which power the active antenna matrix elements. So, it becomes mandatory to bring a new solution to optimize this function. The main challenges are: increasing the functions integration, decreasing the DC power consumption and keeping the RF performances in terms of gain, resolution and linearity

Testo completoThe multisources EBG antenna with defect may be an alternative solution to classical focal feed dedicated to high data rate coverage with reflector antennas onboard satellite. By reducing the number of reflectors, the EBG antenna can decrease the satellite weight and cost. However, its performances must be studied before concluding on its interest. This is the aim of this thesis. After presenting a state of the art of multibeam solution for space telecommunications, a software developed to characterize these performances is presented. It has been used to determine the EBG antenna focal feed advantages and drawbacks. Then, a useful design method is presented. As good performances have been obtained, a prototype has been realized to validate all these results

Testo completoThis thesis is based on a patent done at XLIM RF-Systems. Previous thesis focuses on the ARMA theoretical part and some validation in linear polarization. In this thesis we aimed to introduce the system ARMA to the circular polarization applications in general and to space applications especially. In the entire thesis circularly polarized ARMA with different architecture are achieved with the design of polarization circuits and power dividers. Beam forming of the wide Isoflux pattern with the axial ratio are presented, also scanning beams are achieved for far angles with good axial ratio. All the results are compared with the classical array antenna AESA. Manufacturing of circularly polarized ARMA and the polarization circuits and the power divider are done and the corresponding measurements are presented. Then in the perspectives different challenges are expected to be in a future work for enhancement of the whole ARMA system

Testo completoIn some contexts, conventional methods used for large problems involving radiated or diffracted field computations in the presence of obstacles, such as Physical Optics and ray based methods, become really inaccurate or prohibitively time-consuming. Gabor frame theory provides a rigorous framework for the initial decomposition of equivalent source distributions into a redundant set of Gaussian windows. Frame decomposition has been introduced as a first discretization step into Gaussian Beam Shooting (GBS) algorithms. Until now, frame decomposition has essentially been restricted to planar source distributions, radiating into one half space. The main goal of this thesis is to extend the application range of this theory to radiated or diffracted field decomposition into Gaussian beams propagating into the whole space. The thesis begins with a thorough study of influence of the parameters used for frame coefficient calculation. Numerical implementation is used to test the efficiency of truncation and compression techniques in terms of accuracy / computation time balance optimization. The core of the thesis consists of an original spectral domain partitioning method involving partition of unity functions, which allows to use Gaussian beam shooting from frames defined in six planes, for radiation into the whole three-dimensional space. The formulation of the method is presented and applied to the decomposition of fields radiated by theoretical omnidirectional antennas (dipole array and half-wave dipole) into Gaussian beams. A realistic antenna is used as a test case for the implementation of decompositions based on experimental discrete initial data

Testo completoThis thesis is dedicated to the design, manufacturing and characterization of a reconfigurable antenna array in the 3.4-3.8 GHz band. The active array is composed of 16 dual polarized dipoles that are able to radiate a beam steerable from ± 45° in a plane. Thanks to an arbitrary waveform generator, two beams can be radiated in two directions at two different frequencies simultaneously and can be reconfigured at will. This array can be seen as a candidate for future terrestrial communication systems. Two mobile network operators could then share the same antenna array. The steps of the array design are detailed showing the progression from the single antenna, to the passive array, the reconfigurable array by cluster to finish with the fully reconfigurable array. The array design has been driven by the reduction of the energy consumption. For that purpose, array synthesis tools have been developed to leverage at best the consumption characteristics of amplifiers. A number of measurement results validate experimentally the array radiation performances at each step of the design. Moreover, they demonstrate the achieved reduction of energy consumption and thus validate experimentally the practical interest of the developed synthesis tools

Testo completoThe activities presented in this PhD focus on the study and development of continuous parallel plate waveguide (PPW) lenses for multiple beam applications. The wave front conversion is ensured by a PPW transversal ridge and cavity. The proposed concept, based on a simplified mechanical approach and possibly full-metal, is particularly suitable for future satellite communication systems (GO/LEO) requiring low-cost antennas while maintaining high performances. The first part of the thesis deals with the development of a numerical analysis tool based on geometrical optics (GO). A fast and accurate prediction of the radiation performance is provided.Combining the tool with optimization processes, large scanning performances have been demonstrated, including a stability of the radiation pattern performance (HPBW, SLL, scan loss). A prototype working at Ka band has been manufactured, validating the performances demonstrated previously. High radiation efficiencies are also proved over the entire frequency range. Finally, a second prototype targeting performances in compactness and based on multiple lenses is proposed and studied, showing similar performances as the first solution fabricated and measured

Testo completoWireless energy harvesting (WEH) of ambient or intentional electromagnetic power sources of frequency ranging from 100 MHz to 10 GHz, has appeared as a promising solution to develop self-powered electronics in the past decades. However, the low power densities available, usually lower than 1 uW.cm-2, result in a limited RF-to-DC conversion efficiency and sensitivity of the energy harvesting system (rectenna) and the ambient signal diversities (unknown and time-varying direction of arrival, polarization) prohibit the use of directive antennas. In this thesis, the power combination techniques of Radio Frequency (RF) or Direct Current (DC) power in multi-antenna WEH systems, together with original structures, are investigated to address those challenges. Besides, a new Figure-of-Merit (harvesting capability) for rectennas operating in ambient scenarios is derived with probabilistic terms representing the frequency, polarization and spatial diversities of ambient signals. The first part of this thesis focuses on the design of efficient antenna and rectenna elements. Eco-responsible and low-cost prototypes are proposed by using a paper substrate along with an original strategy for the reduction of the losses. In the second part of this work, the rectification efficiency of a WEH system is enhanced through the combination of the RF power prior to the rectification process, without reduction of the spatial coverage. For this, a 3D multidirectional structure of scanning antenna arrays using passive beam-forming networks is designed to obtain a multidirectional high gain aggregate pattern. This radar-inspired solution involving Butler matrices results in a highly efficient RF-to-DC power conversion along with an optimal angular coverage, which leads to a harvesting capability higher than the state-of-the-art.The last part of this work addresses the limited sensitivity of the RF combination technique compared to that obtained with the series DC combination technique thanks to a reconfigurable system. To this end, modular rectenna unit cells are designed to form a scalable and adaptative interferometric beam-forming network, which offers the possibility to achieve a highly efficient and sensitive WEH system. This solution is suitable for low-power energy harvesting, autonomous passive tracking or RFID applications

Testo completoThis PhD thesis deals with the design of multi-beam antennas. A single radiating aperture is used to generate several beams with high gain and a large field of view. The multi beam operation is achieved by using two topologies of Beam Forming Networks (BFN): quasi optical BFN, and circuit-based BFN. For each category, several solutions have been proposed and validated experimentally. In particular, for the quasi-optical configurations, pillbox structures, mono-pulse antennas in pillbox technology, and multi-layer Rotman lenses have been considered. On the other hand, for circuit-based multi-beam antennas, two solutions have been analyzed: a phased array for SATCOM applications in the framework of a national ANR project and a Butler matrix with controlled side-lobe levels for the radiated beams within a collaboration with the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. The proposed concepts and antenna solutions have been considered in different frequency bands: Ku, K and V. Two technologies have been mainly adopted for the fabrication of the various prototypes: Substrate Integrated Waveguide technology (SIW) which combines the advantages in terms of cost of the printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication process with the efficiency of classical waveguide technology. Considerable efforts have been devoted to the implementation of multilayer SIW structures to overcome and go beyond the current state of the art at national level on PCB fabrication process. Diffusion Bounding Technique, developed at “Ando and Hirokawa lab” at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, which consists of bonding laminated thin metal plates under high temperature and high pressure. This technique allows the fabrication of planar hollow waveguide structures with efficiencies up to 80% in the millimeter wave-band

Testo completoThe evolution of wireless communication impose the need for more sophisticated antenna architectures, combined with antenna diversity and beamforming techniques. This type of antenna offers new possibilities for wireless applications in terms of spectral efficiency, radio link reliability, reduced environmental impact and increased communications system capacity. However, conventional beamforming techniques often lead to a significant increase in antenna size. As a result, the integration of such systems into small wireless devices is relatively limited. Compact, superdirective antenna arrays offer an innovative and attractive solution for both beamforming needs and integration in small volumes. However, they exhibits multiple drawbacks, including low radiation efficiency, low gain and narrow bandwidth. These drawbacks limit the usefulness of superdirective arrays to meet the needs of new-generation wireless technologies. In this thesis, we propose new multi-objectives optimization methods, based on network characteristic mode theory (NCM), array factor theory as well as artificial neural networks (ANN), for the design and the development of new compact, superdirective, efficient and wideband antenna architectures for 5G applications

The concept of ARFFR generalizes the works of Harrington onelectronically steerable parasitic array radiator to regular arrays composed by excited elementsand parasitic ones. This approach aims to simplify the BFN of these antennas in order todemocratize competitive reconfigurable antenna arrays. Thanks to the use of reactive loadsconnected to parasitic elements, controls are maintained to manage both beam forming andactive matching. This thesis aims to assess the performances of the ARFFR and to developantenna architectures which permit to attain complex functions. The scope of application ofARFFR is defined and a design methodology is proposed. This work details the principle ofARFFR concept and analyses the potentialities of a Ku-band ARFFR. The digital approachused to design ARFFR is validated thanks to a demonstrator. Finally, the potentialities of thisconcept are refined by the study of orthogonal bipolarization

Testo completoThe fast development of wireless communication led to an increasing demand for new developments on antennas. These developments were backed by an urgent need for more complex architectures due to the need of reconfigurability in terms of frequency, reliability, radiation pattern and power consumption. In order to cover those needs, this work is based on an original reconfigurable antenna with a simplified feed network developed by XLIM laboratory, to offer an attractive tradeoff in terms of performances, complexity and cost. This new architecture is based on previous works from the laboratory (2012-2015) and a first proof of concept working at 2.45 GHz. The work proposed for this PhD is based on the development of this new architecture to manage the problems of periodic antenna arrays. Two main axes were developed during this work. The first axis consists to demonstrate the interest of this concept to manage the active VSWR of each excited element using loads connected to the parasitic elements, avoiding the need for circulators, while reducing the complexity of feed network. The second part of our work is dedicated to illustrating the potentialities of these antennas to reduce the grating lobes, while defining a constraint on the level of sidelobes. A manufactured prototype is presented in order to experimentally validate the potentialities of these antennas

Testo completoThe work of this thesis aims to investigate a new concept of reconfigurable antenna allowing a good trade-off between performances, complexity and cost. This concept is called ‘hybrid’ because it is based on the capabilities of thinned arrays and parasitic element antennas. It is an alternative to classical antenna arrays and their complexity. The proposed concept has a modular architecture, and a good versatility for reconfigurable beams. The main advantage of this hybrid antenna is the simplicity of its beam formation network (BFN) which requires only a few number of excited elements. The antenna uses parasitic elements to manage the effects of couplings between the electromagnetic access. The problematic of active VSWR is also solved at the antenna level, avoiding the use of additional components in the BFN. This work details the principle of the reconfigurable hybrid antenna concept. The potentialities are evaluated. The elements required to realize a proof of concept are then defined, using a dedicated experimental setup. A prototype is manufactured and the performances have been checked to validate this innovative concept

Testo completoThis PhD thesis is dedicated to the study and the development of a novel agile antenna system called ‘Agile Radiating Matrix with Metamaterials Pixels’. This system is formed by a planar matrix which is composed by an association of jointed electromagnetic pixels. The pixel design is inspired from the electromagnetic band gap antenna and it is surrounded by metallic walls. These pixels are fed by means of several beam forming networks. The intensive theoretical study made on the matrix antenna, showed several electromagnetic performances concerning the low mutual coupling, the great beam steering for high scanning angles and the elimination of grating lobes. Three manufactured prototypes are presented in order to experimentally validate the matrix performances and to respond to some application requirements

Testo completoThe work presented in this thesis is a contribution to the design of a Wireless Power Transfer system (WPT) as a reliable source to supply “Wireless Sensor Network” (WSN). The beamforming concept is used to efficiently transfer the energy wirelessly by focusing the radiation pattern toward each sensor forming the WSN. In the first part of this work, the design and the implementation of a fully integrated active phase shifter, in a BiCMOS SiGe:C 0,25 µm technology, for beamforming was presented. This phase shifter is based on an original architecture using an Injection-Locked Oscillator (ILO) associated with an in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulator. The circuit was manufactured and the measurement results show a continuously controlled 360° phase shiftrange. Applied to each element of the antenna array, this phase shifter covers the entire beam-scanning range of the radiation pattern. In the second part, the design and implementation of an RF energy harvester system at 5.8 GHz is presented. After detailing the design methodology of the rectifier circuit in microstrip technology, the prototype was manufactured, measured and validated. Finally, the "rectenna" was combined to a commercial power management circuit to supply a resistive load emulating the behaviour of a sensor. The complete WPT system was tested experimentally in the laboratory and excellent performances are demonstrated

Testo completoThis thesis present the author’s contributions to the field of non-diffractive waves. Essentially, non-diffractive waves are electromagnetic beams that radiate localized energy with a variety of potential practical applications. The work presented in this thesis can be divided into two parts. In the first part, a novel concept of synthesizing metallic spline profiled Bessel beam/X-wave launchers has been proposed. First, an ad-hoc tool based on mode matching is presented. The tool is capable of evaluating the S parameters, near-, and far-field radiation patterns of metallic structures with azimuthal symmetry. Then, metallic Bessel beam/X-wave launchers are synthesized using the ad-hoc tool. The concept has been experimentally validated by manufacturing and measuring an X-wave launcher operating in a 75-105 GHz frequency range. The fabricated launcher is the first experimental demonstration of an X-wave launcher at such frequencies. In the second part, we have investigated the use of non-diffractive waves for wireless power transfer. First, the use of Bessel-Gauss beams for WPT is investigated. The superior performance of Bessel-Gauss beams compared to Bessel beams is demonstrated. A Bessel-Gauss launcher has been designed for validating this claim. The power transfer coefficient of the launcher exceeds 50% for distances exceeding its non-diffractive range

Testo completoFor good reasons, 5G dominates technological news. The high-bandwidth and real-time capabilities of 5G have huge societal potential by enabling a plethora of new and unanticipated application cases. Indeed, the millimeter-wave frequency band is characterized by an available bandwidth that can support high-speed wireless systems for future radio communications systems, including 5th Generation cellular systems and beyond. The frequencies of operation at mm-wave generally requires larger antenna aperture to improve the channel budget at useful distances. These antennas are usually in the form of phased arrays, allowing beamforming to be performed. This work presents the design and implementation of a 19.5 GHz active phase shifter for beamforming in 5G applications. The proposed circuit is based on an original architecture using an injection-locked voltage-controlled oscillator (ILVCO) associated with a polyphase filter followed by a phase selection circuit and its sign. The desired phase in the range of ± 45° is synthesised with the proposed circuit by altering the control voltage Vcntr of an ILVCO for fine-tuning and modifying the two control signals of phase and sign selectors (S0, S2) for coarse tuning, resulting in a 360° linear phase variation. According to the post-layout simulation results, the frequency tuning range of the VCO varies from 17.89 GHz to 20.16 GHz in free-running mode. In addition, with an injected power of -8.5 dBm and a frequency of 19.5 GHz, the proposed phase shifter draws 20.47 mA from a 1.3 V supply voltage. Furthermore, the mean output power on 50 Ω load is found to be -15.58 dBm. The whole circuit has a chip size of 1.58 mm2 including the pads and it is integrated in a BiCMOS SiGe:C 0.13 μm process. Finally, the obtained results justify that the proposed active phase shifter is a relevant design for phased-array systems used for beamforming in 5G applications
