Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. The "Great Frost" of 1740 was one of the coldest winters of the eighteenth century and impacted many countries all over Europe. The years 1740–1741 have long been known as a period of general crisis caused by harvest failures, high prices for staple foods, and excess mortality. Vulnerabilities, coping capacities and adaptation processes varied considerably among different countries. This paper investigates the famine of 1740–1741 in Ireland applying a multi-indicator model developed specifically for the integration of an analysis of pre-famine vulnerability, the Famine Vulnerability Analysis Model (FVAM). Our focus is on Ireland, because famine has played a more outstanding role in Irish national history than in any other European country, due to the "Great Famine" of 1845–1852 and its long-term demographic effects. Our analysis shows that Ireland was already particularly vulnerable to famine in the first half of the eighteenth century. During and after the experience of hardship in 1740–1741, many Irish moved within Ireland or left the country entirely. We regard migration as a form of adaptation and argue that Irish migration in 1740–1741 should be considered as a case of climate-induced migration.

Theodor Adorno's post-humanist account of has established the aftermath of World War Two as a preeminent context for interpreting the play, but the violent origins of Ireland's Protestant Ascendancy, as foreshadowed in Spenser's (1596), provide equally compelling evidence of the intimate relationship between civilizing pretension and barbaric practice. By way of a betrayal of W. B. Yeats's suppression of the darker aspects of the Ascendancy's Irish history, in particular the Irish Famine of 1845-1852, can be seen to interrogate the discontents of humanism in both Ireland and on the Continent.

Abstract (sommario):
The growth of Swedish-Romanian trade increased after Sweden opened its first diplomatic representation on Romanian soil in Galați (1851), Brăila (1852), Bucharest (1852), and Constanța (1880). In 1922, Sweden and Romania signed the first convention that regulated commerce. Later, in 1929, Romania took a loan of 30 million dollars from a Swedish concern in what proved to be a significant moment in the history of Swedish-Romanian economic relations.During the Second World War, both countries faced difficulties maintaining stable trade as a result of economic pressure from Germany and, eventually, the Soviet Union. Despite the challenges, Sweden succeeded in importing Romanian oil products, fodder, and grains – essential products for their economy – while Romania purchased Swedish agricultural machinery and other technologies.By the end of the war, several Swedish companies had established operations in Romania; among them, internationally recognized companies such as Swedish Matches, Kullager, Elektrolux, L.M. Ericsson, and Elektro-Invest.

Abstract (sommario):
Just over 50% of the productive forest estate in Ireland is less than 25 years of age. The private component of this estate is even younger. Substantial Government and EU grant-aid has been the primary driver to the establishment of private forests. The major factor affecting the competitiveness of the forest – wood / non-wood / services – consumer chain in Ireland therefore is the limited current supply of raw material and the uncertainty about the future supply of roundwood from private forests. Most of these forests are less than 10 hectares in size and are located in inaccessible areas. There are concerns that, due to the lack of economies of scale, harvesting will not take place. The lack of silvicultural skills combined with the absence of an organisational structure among the majority of forest owners makes the economic harvesting and marketing of the timber output from the forests more unlikely. Species distributions of state and private forests are dominated by Picea sitchensis. While the species is suitable for a range of end-uses the opportunities to add value are limited. This is a barrier to the development of value-added enterprises. The development of enterprises using species other than Picea sitchensis is difficult due to the limited and irregular supply. The range of non-wood products and services that can be produced within Picea sitchensis forests is limited. The main problem and research question for enterprise development in the forest sector is to identify the appropriate organisational structure that will facilitate the economic harvesting and marketing of the timber output from small-scale forests. If this structure is in place a key barrier to enterprise development in the forestry sector will be removed. Research and development into value-added applications of Irish grown timber, in particular Picea sitchensis timber, is required to expand the market for that timber. Markets for a range of non-wood products and services need to be investigated further.

Abstract (sommario):
When Lady Augusta Gregory (1852-1932) effected her famous mid-life self-reinvention from Anglo-Irish landlady to revivalist dramatist, healing women from her locality provided significant guides and models for her new life and work. This article will discuss what Gregory learned from the lore of a local healer, the shadowy Bridget Ruane (who died c.1899). It will analyse how Gregory worked Ruane’s folk medical knowledge into her prose writings and plays, including The Pot of Broth (1904). In restoring the name of this non-elite woman from the west of Ireland, this article suggests the benefits of casting the net more widely for names to stand alongside Gregory’s as creators of Revival-era culture.

Abstract (sommario):
The Great Famine (1845--1852) was not only a catastrophic moment in Irish history, it was and remains an important source of textual production, particularly in regard to literature and drama. These cultural products carry a powerful discourse used to communicate various social and political agendas. From the beginning, Irish novelists, poets and dramatists have confronted the question of the Famine's meaning then and now. At each historical moment, they have interrogated the Famine and have employed various discursive strategies to communicate to their readers and audiences.
This dissertation makes four primary claims: (a) The historical Irish Famine has remained a source of discursive activity by Irish writers, and so constitutes a phenomenon that merits communication research; (b) This discursive content constructs the Famine in ways that communicate its meaning for contemporary readers in successive historical periods; (c) The multiple discursive meanings of the Famine are often contradictory, and demonstrate the conflicting socio-cultural and political goals of both writers and their readerships; and (d) The emergence and evolution of Famine discourse, which consistently recruits pre-existing discourses, provides an important site for examination of the communicational function of imaginative literature and drama.
A survey of Famine literature and drama reveals inconsistent patterns of textual production and discursive content. By determining the historical periods of Famine literary and dramatic production, and by analyzing the contextual dimensions and textual features of representative works, the reasons behind periods of high and low output, the purposes of discursive maintenance and manipulation and the relationship between literary and dramatic discourse and readerships can be approached. To undertake this analysis, five central tropes---land, national identity, religion, gender and agency---are employed. These themes are multi-layered and mutually implicated both on the level of textual production and consumption, that is, in their writing and in their reading/viewing. These tropes have been employed in and through the communicational perspectives of several thinkers, notably Pierre Bourdieu and Teun van Dijk.
Termed an Gorta Mor in the Irish language, the Famine dramatically altered Ireland's social, economic and political fabric, triggered massive emigration to America, Britain and Canada, and etched itself into the Irish psyche as an enduring, if frequently repressed, moment of trauma. As such, a study of its role in communication, in human meaning-making, can illuminate not only Irish experience but the human capacity to tell a bitter, painful story, for specific ends, by remembering and manipulating its elements and to use that story as tool in achieving social and political goals, and in obtaining or maintaining power.

Abstract (sommario):
It is the contention of this thesis that the activities of, and the influences on, the senior administrators based in the Castle and the Custom House in Dublin during the Great Irish Famine are an essential element to understanding the formulation and execution of Irish Famine relief policy. The principal aim of the study is to articulate the role played by these administrators in the formulation of relief policy. Emphasis is also given to the debates in the Cabinet over Irish relief policy and the influence of the administrators on those debates. The subject of the first chapter is the Science Commission. It examines in turn Peel's motivations for establishing the Science Commission, the chronology of events leading up to its establishment and the activities of the Commissioners both in England and Ireland. The second chapter concerns the Scarcity Commission established by Peel and Graham. It explores the motivations behind the selection of individual Commissioners and the relationships between the Commissioners. It also considers and contrasts the tasks that were officially assigned to the Commissioners and the limited use to which their conclusions were put by the Government. Chapters three and four deal with the Board of Works and in particular its influence on the formulation and administration of relief policy of Richard Griffith, Thomas Larcom, and Harry Jones. The activities of the Commissioners after the reconfiguration of the Board of Works by Act of Parliament in 1846 are examined and the fourth chapter seeks to establish in detail the political context surrounding-the decision to abandon relief by public employment as revealed in the Cabinet discussions at the time. The final chapter examines the actions of Edward Twisleton in Ireland during the Famine and his influence, or lack of it, on the formulation of relief policy. A detailed account is offered of the political context of the Poor Law Extension Act. Twisleton's relationships with both the Treasury and Clarendon, and the motives underlying his resignation in March 1849, are investigated.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Ireland-Claisen rearrangement is a powerful synthetic tool which allows predictable diasterocontrol and chirality transfer in the synthesis of γ,δ-unsaturated carboxylic acids. Previous work within the Carbery group has developed a novel protocol for the synthesis of β-alkoxy- and aryloxy-α-amino acids. Chapter 2 covers the initial volume of work on developing this methodology further to allow the synthesis of sterically congested α-quaternary carbon centres in β-alkyoxy- and aryloxy-α-amino acids. Individual substrate optimisation allowed improvement of both the yields and diastereoselectivity of this rearrangement, along with the isolation of a key degradation product. A series of heteroproline-based rearrangements laid the groundwork for remote chirality transfer within this Ireland-Claisen rearrangement. The principle of self-regeneration of stereocentres is applied in an Ireland-Claisen context in Chapter 3. Showing exceptional levels of remote stereocontrol the rearrangement is shown to be general, offering almost exclusively diastereoselectivities of >99:1. Allylic enol ether amino esters saw yields of 47 – 83% and provided functional handles allowing for further synthetic manipulations. Carbon substituted allyl amino esters allowed facile access into β-hydroxy-α-amino acid derivatives of proteinogenic amino acids leucine and isoleucine (amongst others) with excellent selectivity. The synthesis of both enantiomers of mycestericin G in Chapter 4 highlights the synthetic utility of this methodology, in addition to allowing a revision of absolute configuration of this natural product. The synthesis of a mycestericin G analogue, derived from threonine, is also presented. Finally, Chapter 5 exploits these rearrangement products as chiral diene ligands in rhodium-catalysed conjugate addition reactions. Both ligand and reaction condition optimisation led to a range of aryl boronic acids used in the 1,4-addition to 2-cyclohexenone with yields of 24 – 100% and enantioselectivities of 74 – 93% observed.

Abstract (sommario):
In December 1881, a young Irish woman arrived in Cairo with her husband. She had already read much about Urabi, but in Cairo she had a chance to meet the Egyptian nationalist, who was actively revolting against the Khedive’s rule and Western, especially British, intervention in the region. This young woman was Lady Augusta Gregory, most famous for her role as a dramatist and folklorist, and most importantly as a co-founder of the Abbey theatre with W.B. Yeats. This dissertation starts on that note of exchange between two nations trying to liberate themselves from the British Empire and is especially interested in the role of the theatre in the process. The thesis, thus, looks at Ireland with its cultural nationalism and its politically engaged theatre as a case study and compares it to the role of the theatre in Egypt in the 1960s. It begins with the assumption that theatre with its performative capacity has the power to engage with and to an extent affect the politics of its day. As such it explores plays from Egypt and Ireland in the second half of the 20th century in order to look into the role theatre and performance have played and can potentially play in politics, in these specific contexts and beyond. By examining works by Tawfiq al-Hakim, Mikhail Roman, Yusuf Idris, and Salah Abdul-Saboor, alongside Brian Friel, Frank McGuinness and, of course, Samuel Beckett, this dissertation helps map not only the political aesthetics of unsteady times and seemingly disparate places, but it also reflects on the dynamics of revolt as a staged act in and of itself, which highlights its relevance to our contemporary world

Abstract (sommario):
Historical evidence from contemporary documents established that Irish migrants to London during the Great Irish Famine (1845-1852) were likely to come from low socio-economic groups in south-west Ireland, and has characterised mid-19th-century health status and living conditions in both locations. Using samples from 119 individuals from the Catholic cemetery at Lukin Street, London (1843-1854) and 20 from the Union Workhouse Famine cemetery, Kilkenny, Ireland (1847-51), mean bone collagen isotope values were established for the well-documented Irish pre-Famine potato-based diet (δ¹⁵N 10.6‰, δ¹³C -19.1‰), and the diet of contemporaneous Londoners (δ¹⁵N 12.6‰, δ¹³C -19.1‰). The introduction of maize as a short-term Famine relief food was identified in three Kilkenny juveniles with bone collagen δ¹³C above -17‰, and incremental dentine collagen demonstrating temporal changes in δ¹³C consistent with dietary change from C3 to C4 plants. Bone collagen values for two Lukin Street individuals were consistent with high marine protein consumption. Techniques developed in this study to sample increments of dentine representing nine months or less of life have improved temporal resolution not only for migration events but also short-term dietary changes and physiological status during childhood. Combining epigraphic, osteological and archaeological evidence, individual 'lifeways' have been constructed using isotope data and provide insights into the connection between health, diet and skeletal manifestations of deprivation during childhood and adolescence. New models are investigated for examining maternal and infant health using dentine collagen increments formed in utero and combining dentine and bone collagen values to explore the effects of nutritional stress on bone turnover.

Fitz, Mark. "Martingales on Riesz Spaces and Banach Lattices". Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/1852.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Student Number : 0413210T - MSc dissertation - School of Mathematics - Faculty of Science
The aim of this work is to do a literature study on spaces of martingales on Riesz spaces and Banach lattices, using [16, 19, 20, 17, 18, 2, 30] as a point of departure. Convergence of martingales in the classical theory of stochastic processes has many applications in mathematics and related areas. Operator theoretic approaches to the classical theory of stochastic processes and martingale theory in particular, can be found in, for example, [4, 5, 6, 7, 13, 15, 26, 27]. The classical theory of stochastic processes for scalar-valued measurable functions on a probability space ( ,#6;, μ) utilizes the measure space ( ,#6;, μ), the norm structure of the associated Lp(μ)-spaces as well as the order structure of these spaces. Motivated by the existing operator theoretic approaches to classical stochastic processes, a theory of discrete-time stochastic processes has been developed in [16, 19, 20, 17, 18] on Dedekind complete Riesz spaces with weak order units. This approach is measure-free and utilizes only the order structure of the given Riesz space. Martingale convergence in the Riesz space setting is considered in [18]. It was shown there that the spaces of order bounded martingales and order convergent martingales, on a Dedekind complete Riesz space with a weak order unit, coincide. A measure-free approach to martingale theory on Banach lattices with quasi-interior points has been given in [2]. Here, the groundwork was done to generalize the notion of a filtration on a vector-valued Lp-space to the M-tensor product of a Banach space and a Banach lattice (see [1]). In [30], a measure-free approaches to martingale theory on Banach lattices is given. The main results in [30] show that the space of regular norm bounded martingales and the space of norm bounded martingales on a Banach lattice E are Banach lattices in a natural way provided that, for the former, E is an order continuous Banach lattice, and for the latter, E is a KB-space. The definition of a ”martingale” defined on a particular space depends on the type of space under consideration and on the ”filtration,” which is a sequence of operators defined on the space. Throughout this dissertation, we shall consider Riesz spaces, Riesz spaces with order units, Banach spaces, Banach lattices and Banach lattices with quasi-interior points. Our definition of a ”filtration” will, therefore, be determined by the type of space under consideration and will be adapted to suit the case at hand. In Chapter 2, we consider convergent martingale theory on Riesz spaces. This chapter is based on the theory of martingales and their properties on Dedekind complete Riesz spaces with weak order units, as can be found in [19, 20, 17, 18]. The notion of a ”filtration” in this setting is generalized to Riesz spaces. The space of martingales with respect to a given filtration on a Riesz space is introduced and an ordering defined on this space. The spaces of regular, order bounded, order convergent and generated martingales are introduced and properties of these spaces are considered. In particular, we show that the space of regular martingales defined on a Dedekind complete Riesz space is again a Riesz space. This result, in this context, we believe is new. The contents of Chapter 3 is convergent martingale theory on Banach lattices. We consider the spaces of norm bounded, norm convergent and regular norm bounded martingales on Banach lattices. In [30], filtrations (Tn) on the Banach lattice E which satisfy the condition 1[n=1 R(Tn) = E, where R(Tn) denotes the range of the filtration, are considered. We do not make this assumption in our definition of a filtration (Tn) on a Banach lattice. Our definition yields equality (in fact, a Riesz and isometric isomorphism) between the space of norm convergent martingales and 1Sn=1R(Tn). The aforementioned main results in [30] are also considered in this chapter. All the results pertaining to martingales on Banach spaces in subsections 3.1.1, 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 we believe are new. Chapter 4 is based on the theory of martingales on vector-valued Lp-spaces (cf. [4]), on its extension to the M-tensor product of a Banach space and a Banach lattice as introduced by Chaney in [1] (see also [29]) and on [2]. We consider filtrations on tensor products of Banach lattices and Banach spaces as can be found in [2]. We show that if (Sn) is a filtration on a Banach lattice F and (Tn) is a filtration on a Banach space X, then 1[n=1 R(Tn Sn) = 1[n=1 R(Tn) e M 1[n=1 R(Sn). This yields a distributive property for the space of convergent martingales on the M-tensor product of X and F. We consider the continuous dual of the space of martingales and apply our results to characterize dual Banach spaces with the Radon- Nikod´ym property. We use standard notation and terminology as can be found in standard works on Riesz spaces, Banach spaces and vector-valued Lp-spaces (see [4, 23, 29, 31]). However, for the convenience of the reader, notation and terminology used are included in the Appendix at the end of this work. We hope that this will enhance the pace of readability for those familiar with these standard notions.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The effectiveness of cathodic protection to control corrosion and the resulting corrosion rate of pipelines arc determined by the chemical and electrochemical conditions at local areas along the pipeline. The disbonding of coatings and tapes is also controlled to a large extent by the chemical and electrochemical conditions. Processes that occur on the metal surface and their effect on corrosion and cathodic protection are discussed with respect to real pipeline conditions. Disbonded coatings on steel can interfere with the current distribution from cathodic protection. Shielding the current under disbonded coatings can affect the level of protection, the corrosion behavior and the disbonding of coatings. A major thrust in our laboratories has been the use of laboratory measurements and computational models to determine the changes in the corrosive environment that occur beneath disbonded coatings as a function of applied potential, disbonded area geometry, prior corrosion products and wet/dry cycles. These results are summarized here.

Reynolds, Anthony, Philip R. LeGoy e Aidan Sweeney. "Waste to Energy Strategy and Approach for Ireland". In 10th Annual North American Waste-to-Energy Conference. ASMEDC, 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/nawtec10-1009.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Waste to Energy (WTE) is a viable and vital resource to Ireland. Due to its geographic location, strategically located between the U.S. and Europe, Ireland has inherent advantages when it comes to gaining technical knowledge. As an island country with its size it has exaggerated waste elimination problems. Power generation in Ireland is distorted by the size of the island and Irelands recent high-tech business boom has had an affect too. These two items, power and waste, overlap and can be addressed (in part) with one solution. Products not produced in Ireland are imported. The residue of these products is garbage. Therefore the garbage is constantly being imported to the island and never expelled. Landfill space in Ireland is diminishing — rapidly. “Not in my backyard!” is a principal attitude of the public and with good reason. Refuse is a health threat. Landfill tax legislation is changing and the price is rising to €19/tonne and heading for €32/tonne. Converting waste to energy as part of a recycling process garnishes public support because the resource of rubbish is managed in a manner that appeals to common sense. It is a solution that takes into account the public health and providence of the island. If waste is sorted and classified as economically recyclable (i.e. marketable) it is reclaimed and reused. If waste is sorted and classified as economically un-recyclable by conventional methods it is then evaluated for its energy value in power generation and thermal conversion to basic elemental products. The classification process determines the value of waste products, therefore the economic implications of their use either by recycling the waste and thermally eliminating it while generating electricity and/or by producing recycled products. This paper presents a waste recycling/generation project concept that includes waste stream separation, refuse-derived fuels, waste gasification/generation and renewable power resource integration.

Willis, C., F. Jorgensen, S. A. Cawthraw, H. Aird, S. Lai, M. Chattaway, I. Lock, E. Quill e G. Raykova. A survey of Salmonella, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and antimicrobial resistance in frozen, part-cooked, breaded or battered poultry products on retail sale in the United Kingdom. Food Standards Agency, maggio 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.xvu389.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Frozen, breaded, ready-to-cook chicken products have been implicated in outbreaks of salmonellosis. Some of these outbreaks can be large. For example, one outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis involved 193 people in nine countries between 2018 and 2020, of which 122 cases were in the UK. These ready-to-cook products have a browned, cooked external appearance, which may be perceived as ready-to-eat, leading to mishandling or undercooking by consumers. Continuing concerns about these products led FSA to initiate a short-term (four month), cross-sectional surveillance study undertaken in 2021 to determine the prevalence of Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in frozen, breaded or battered chicken products on retail sale in the UK. This study sought to obtain data on AMR levels in Salmonella and E. coli in these products, in line with a number of other FSA instigated studies of the incidence and nature of AMR in the UK food chain, for example, the systematic review (2016). Between the beginning of April and the end of July 2021, 310 samples of frozen, breaded or battered chicken products containing either raw or partly cooked chicken, were collected using representative sampling of retailers in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland based on market share data. Samples included domestically produced and imported chicken products and were tested for E. coli (including extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing, colistin-resistant and carbapenem-resistant E. coli) and Salmonella spp. One isolate of each bacterial type from each contaminated sample was randomly selected for additional AMR testing to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for a range of antimicrobials. More detailed analysis based on Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) data was used to further characterise Salmonella spp. isolates and allow the identification of potential links with human isolates. Salmonella spp. were detected in 5 (1.6%) of the 310 samples and identified as Salmonella Infantis (in three samples) and S. Java (in two samples). One of the S. Infantis isolates fell into the same genetic cluster as S. Infantis isolates from three recent human cases of infection; the second fell into another cluster containing two recent cases of infection. Countries of origin recorded on the packaging of the five Salmonella contaminated samples were Hungary (n=1), Ireland (n=2) and the UK (n=2). One S. Infantis isolate was multi-drug resistant (i.e. resistant to three different classes of antimicrobials), while the other Salmonella isolates were each resistant to at least one of the classes of antimicrobials tested. E. coli was detected in 113 samples (36.4%), with counts ranging from <3 to >1100 MPN (Most Probable Number)/g. Almost half of the E. coli isolates (44.5%) were susceptible to all antimicrobials tested. Multi-drug resistance was detected in 20.0% of E. coli isolates. E. coli isolates demonstrating the ESBL (but not AmpC) phenotype were detected in 15 of the 310 samples (4.8%) and the AmpC phenotype alone was detected in two of the 310 samples (0.6%) of chicken samples. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing showed that five of the 15 (33.3%) ESBL-producing E. coli carried blaCTX-M genes (CTX-M-1, CTX-M-55 or CTX-M-15), which confer resistance to third generation cephalosporin antimicrobials. One E. coli isolate demonstrated resistance to colistin and was found to possess the mcr-1 gene. The five Salmonella-positive samples recovered from this study, and 20 similar Salmonella-positive samples from a previous UKHSA (2020/2021) study (which had been stored frozen), were subjected to the cooking procedures described on the sample product packaging for fan assisted ovens. No Salmonella were detected in any of these 25 samples after cooking. The current survey provides evidence of the presence of Salmonella in frozen, breaded and battered chicken products in the UK food chain, although at a considerably lower incidence than reported in an earlier (2020/2021) study carried out by PHE/UKHSA as part of an outbreak investigation where Salmonella prevalence was found to be 8.8%. The current survey also provides data on the prevalence of specified AMR bacteria found in the tested chicken products on retail sale in the UK. It will contribute to monitoring trends in AMR prevalence over time within the UK, support comparisons with data from other countries, and provide a baseline against which to monitor the impact of future interventions. While AMR activity was observed in some of the E. coli and Salmonella spp. examined in this study, the risk of acquiring AMR bacteria from consumption of these processed chicken products is low if the products are cooked thoroughly and handled hygienically.

UK, Ipsos. Potential Divergence of Food Safety Regulations Within the UK. Food Standards Agency, gennaio 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.nct227.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This report summarises the findings from qualitative research exploring public attitudes towards regulatory divergence related to food products. The research was conducted with 78 participants from England, Wales and Northern Ireland, who took part in four online workshops between 26 January and 7 February 2023. Each workshop lasted three hours. Previous research for the Food Standards Agency (FSA) captured general consumer views towards regulatory divergence in the meat industry. Attitudes were influenced by three key factors including the scale of the change, perceptions of whether an erosion of standards could increase the risk of food becoming unsafe and the perceived motivations behind making changes. This study was designed to explore whether findings were applicable across other food sectors, product types, and regulated activities, and to understand what factors influence consumer views of regulatory divergence. Reflecting the complexity of the subject matter, our methodology was designed to introduce the public to the context for change and the concept of regulatory divergence, provide them with an opportunity to ask the FSA questions and used hypothetical scenarios to draw out views on regulatory divergence in practice.

Estimating financial cost to individuals with a food hypersensitivity. Food Standards Agency, dicembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.buq453.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is a non-ministerial government department within the United Kingdom responsible for protecting public health and protecting consumer interests in relation to food in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Food Hypersensitivities (FHS) is a key priority within the FSA as it is an important food-related health issue with a severe and enduring impact for people living with it. FHS includes individuals living with a food allergy, coeliac disease and food intolerance. It is the responsibility of the FSA to seek ways to understand and reduce avoidable deaths, the negative impact of FHS on both consumers and businesses, and make sure that FHS consumers have access to safe food that is what it says it is on the label, which they can trust. For people with chronic and / or potentially life-threatening FHS, that trust becomes even more important. FHS places both a public health and financial burden on society. According to the FSA’s Food and You 2 Wave 3 Survey(footnote 1), an estimated 800,000 people are living with a clinically diagnosed food allergy, 300,000 with coeliac disease and 1.2 million living with food intolerance and other FHS conditions in the UK. The FSA has invested in a programme of research to understand the economic and societal burden of FHS and to explore how people living with FHS are impacted in their daily lives. The FSA commissioned RSM UK Consulting (RSM), Dr Audrey DunnGalvin from University College Cork and Alizon Draper from the University of Westminster to quantify and monetise the financial burden imposed on people living with FHS through their day-to-day management of the physical risks associated with food allergies, food intolerance and coeliac disease. This is the first study of its kind to consider whether residents in England, Northern Ireland, and Wales who live with any type of FHS condition (food intolerance, coeliac disease or food allergy) results in additional financial burden for their household. About this study The aim of the study was to quantify and monetise the financial burden imposed on households with FHS through the day-to-day management of the physical risks associated with food allergies, food intolerance and coeliac disease, by: comparing the price paid for food between households with at least one adult above 18 years old living with FHS, to households without FHS valuing the direct costs incurred through efforts to manage FHS and remain symptom free (for example, medical and kitchen supplies) monetising indirect costs incurred when having to deal with an FHS condition (for example, lost working days) This study is unique in terms of estimating price differentials for food consumption across different types of FHS and then comparing to a non-FHS comparison group. Previous studies have focused on coeliac disease, specifically the comparison between gluten-free and gluten-containing products, so this study is adding new knowledge to the evidence base.
