Abstract (sommario):
What had begun as a respectable stream of information about Asia during the sixteenth century became a virtual flood during the seventeenth. Literally hundreds of books about Asia and its various parts were published during that century, authored by missionaries, merchants, mariners, physicians, soldiers, and independent travellers. At least twenty-five major descriptions of South Asia, appeared during the century; another fifteen on mainland Southeast Asia, about twenty devoted to the Southeast Asian archipelagoes, and sixty or more to East Asia. Alongside these major independent contributions stood scores of Jesuit letterbooks, derivative accounts, travel accounts with brief descriptions of many Asian places, pamphlets, newssheets, and the like. Many of these were collected into the several large multivolume compilations of travel literature published during the period. In addition, several important scholarly studies pertaining to Asia were published during the seventeenth century - studies of Asian medicine, botany, religion, and history- as well as translations of important Chinese and Sanskrit literature.

Abstract (sommario):
To define East Asia’s cultural identity as several specific cultural factors is to recognize East Asian culture as objects of ideas, ideals, imagination, and fiction, not as entities that exist. However, it is not right to deny the existence of East Asian universal culture and common culture because of the fact that East Asian culture cannot be explained by several specific factors. It can never be right to deny even the facts that exist not to see East Asia based on ideas and ideals. Literature in classical chinese character, one of the cultural elements of East Asia, is a literary style that began in China and spread throughout East Asia. Therefore, in order to approach East Asian literature in classical chinese character, a balanced perspective between the self and the other is necessary. This is the same in the case of Korean literature in classical chinese character, and accordingly, it is argued that East Asian literature in classical chinese character and Korean literature in classical chinese character should be viewed from a relative perspective, but the practical approach has not yet met this discourse. Researchers of Korean literature in classical chinese character believe that Korean literature in classical chinese character is a literature that emphasizes subjectivity while aiming for chineseization, and that it is a literature that has heterogeneity based on homogeneity with literature in classical chinese character in China and homogeneity based on heterogeneity with literature in classical chinese character in other regions, and aims to establish the status of Korean literature in classical chinese character in East Asia by revealing the contents of exchanges and communication through various contacts. However, these arguments still have many problems to be solved in that most of the leaders of mutual exchange and communication in East Asia do not have a decisive influence in the country’s politics, society, and culture, and the results of exchange and communication have generally resulted in a personal level. Therefore, in order to solve the problem of the status of Korean Literature in Classical Chinese Character in East Asia, it is necessary to reconsider the most essential part of East Asia and Korean Literature in Classical Chinese Character from now on.

Abstract (sommario):
Literature becomes part of a cultural entity whose practice is reflected in literary works. Along with the times, the existence of Arabic literature spread to various continents including Southeast Asia. Arabic literature is one of the supporting factors in the spread of Islam, especially in Southeast Asia. The purpose of this research is to understand the existence of Arabic literature and its forms in the Southeast Asian region. This research uses a type of library research through a qualitative approach. Sources of data in this study were secondary, namely articles, books, and research reports on Arabic literature in the Southeast Asian region. Data collection techniques in this study used documentation techniques. The collected data were then analyzed using a descriptive method by describing findings related to the existence and forms of Arabic literature in the Southeast Asian region. The results of the study show that the history of Islamization in Southeast Asia has left behind a wealth of written texts, both literary and religious, in large numbers. The use of Malay Arabic script in several countries in Southeast Asia is a reflection that Arabic literature exists in Southeast Asia.

Abstract (sommario):
Editors’ Note: Among the liveliest and most ambitious journals in world literary studies today is the biennial Korean journal Chigujŏk segye munhak (Global World Literature), edited by Kim Jae-yong. Professor of modern Korean literature and world literature at Wonkwang University in Iksan, South Korea. Kim is the author and editor or co-editor of numerous books on Korean and world literature, including Hyŏmnyŏk kwa chŏhang (Collaboration and Resistance, 2004), Segye munhak ŭrosŏ ŭi asia munhak (Asian Literature as World Literature, 2012), and Rat Fire: Korean Stories from the Japanese Empire (2013). The following essay, translated for JWL by John Kim, is an expanded version of Kim Jae-young’s programmatic essay for his journal’s first issue (Spring 2013), in which he sets out the rationale for the journal as a counter to the persistent Euro-American-centrism of much world literary study, both in the West and in Asia itself. Genuinely global in its presentation of world literature, the journal is published in Korean and is designed for a broad scholarly and general readership in South Korea, providing a notable example of the contemporary development of world literary studies within a distinct national context.

Abstract (sommario):
Using a systematic literature review as the primary research approach, the purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the research trends connected to management of maritime logistics in both Asia and Indonesia. The literature review was carried out with the help of Leximancer, which is a text analytics software, in order to determine the major ideas and recurring topics that were addressed in the research that were chosen. A form of research known as a systematic literature review was utilized for this particular investigation. According to the findings of the comprehensive evaluation of the relevant literature, researchers in Asia and Indonesia follow comparable lines of enquiry in the field of maritime logistics management research. The studies concentrate their attention particularly on topics like the management of supply chains, the optimization of transportation, and the promotion of sustainability in maritime logistics. In spite of the fact that the study tendencies in Asia and Indonesia are quite comparable to one another, certain studies in Indonesia place a distinct emphasis on particular ideas like society, the environment, and marine development. Taking into account its archipelagic character, local rules, and vital position in international trade, these ideas are reflective of the particular challenges and opportunities that Indonesia has when it comes to the management of its maritime logistics. To summarize, Asian research on logistics and maritime management focuses on risks, performance, globalization, environmental sustainability, and green practices. Therefore, Asian trends can be utilized by Indonesian scholars in their studies of maritime logistics management.

Abstract (sommario):
Cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is highly transmissible. Although there are many studies on HPV infection in general population of women globally, little attention has been paid to female sex workers (FSWs) in Asia. In this study, we used a meta-analytic approach to systematically analyse the literature to elucidate the prevalence and genotype distribution of cervical HPV infection among FSWs in Asia. Fourteen eligible studies were identified in five databases, and data including 4198 FSWs from nine Asian countries were aggregated. Crude estimates of cervical HPV prevalence among FSWs in this region ranged from 12.8% to 84.8%. FSWs had a nearly 10-fold risk of HPV infection than the general population of women. Stratified analysis showed that HPV prevalence was higher in East Asia than other subregions and in younger FSWs than older FSWs. HPV genotype distribution was statistically different between East Asia and South-east Asia. In East Asia, the most prevalent genotypes were HPV 16 (23.9%), 18 (11.0%), 58 (9.4%), 56 (6.3%) and 52 (5.3%), while they were HPV 52 (12.9%), 16 (8.5%), 58 (5.2%), 18 (5.0%) and 66 (4.9%) in South-east Asia. HPV 31, 33 and 35 were less frequently found in both subregions. HPV infection was substantial among FSWs in some Asian countries. More studies are necessary to illustrate the overall picture of HPV infection in this region.

Abstract (sommario):
The international guideline recommendations for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) lowering were made based on the results of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), meta-analyses, and observational studies mostly in the White population. It was not clear whether these LDL-C targets could be applicable to other ethnic groups, for example, Asian patients. This review aimed to address major aspects related to the lipid goal and statin therapy in Asia, including the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, the LDL-C profiles, the lipid goals from localized guidelines, genetics and lifestyles, and the efficacy and safety of statins. Owing to the geographic, ethnic, genetic, and cultural diversity in this region, we observed a geographic pattern of diversity in cardiovascular epidemiology and statin response in Central Asia, East Asia (particularly for Asia-Pacific region), and South Asia. The rapidly growing literature from Asian countries questioning “lower is better” hypothesis was noticed. However, owing to the nature of these dominantly observational data, the conclusion was hardly confirmative. Despite the rapid expansion of the current literature in this region, efforts should be made to ensure an adequate sample size to assess the significance of a given lipid parameter on overall cardiovascular outcomes in this Asian population.

Abstract (sommario):
Knowledge about child protection system reform and deinstitutionalisation in South Asian countries is scarce. This study explores the legislative frameworks and literature on deinstitutionalisation in eight South Asian countries, to consolidate the knowledge, explore the challenges and propose strategies to overcome the difficulties associated with this reform. South Asia, home to almost 25per cent of the world’s population, or 1.8 billion people ( The World Bank, 2019 ), is culturally complex and requires a variety of solutions to keep all its children safe. This study introduces three strategies that could promote deinstitutionalisation in South Asia: (1) utilising a regional approach, (2) decentralised implementation and (3) capitalising on traditional alternative care practices. Future studies are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies in each country.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: The present study is aimed at presenting a critical appraisal of the empirical literature on the Balassa-Samuelson hypothesis for emerging and developing Asian countries. Design/methodology/approach: A critical appraisal of the relevant studies is carried out across various important dimensions of the empirical estimation of the Balassa-Samuelson hypothesis including the scheme of sectoral division followed, definitions and proxy variables used for constructing real exchange rate and price series, choice of output and employment series and their subsequent transformation, empirical methodology followed and (theoretically) different variants of the hypothesis chosen for empirical estimation. Findings: Only a handful of studies have investigated the Balassa-Samuelson hypothesis for Asia. Nevertheless, these studies are characterized by a variety of irregularities in dealing with different important features of the theory, which may be of critical importance for yielding consistent empirical estimates. In multi-country studies for Asia, serious inconsistencies are observed whilst handling these critical aspects of the hypothesis. Such irregularities may hold serious implications for model estimates since the empirical evidence from Asia is very mixed, and in many cases, not even robust. Practical implications: The inconsistencies highlighted in this review paper hold strong implications for future research in this area. The selection of price indicators for the construction of real exchange rate series, choice of econometric methodology and the theoretical framework followed are aspects of the empirical verification of the Balassa-Samuelson hypothesis that need to be handled with great caution since they turn out to be most sensitive in relation to yielding intuitively correct and robust model estimates. Originality: To our knowledge, so far, no study on Asia has presented such an extensive appraisal of literature on the productivity-real exchange rate nexus. The present study is therefore novel in the sense that it critically evaluates studies on Asia against all those features of the Balssa-Samuelson theory which may stand responsible for yielding mixed and even contrasting empirical estimates for Asia.

Abstract (sommario):
Defining Asian literature is always problematic, whether the terminology covers the literary work written by Asians, about Asian or by Asians about Asian(s). Regarding the issue, the women’s position in defining Asian literature is even more problematic since women are considered secondary to men and cultural dominance themes. This paper aims at giving a contribution to what to add in defining Asian literature through the advancement of women’s portrayal, position, and chance in three different female writers. The objects of the review are Ami Tan’s The Joy Luck Club (1989), Ayu Utami’s Saman published in 1998 and translated by Pamela Allen in 2005, Balzac’s My Journey from Paris to Java (2010). This study found that there is an advancement in the women’s portrayal, position, and chance in Asia which are reflected in the three literary works. This advancement confirms the significance of women in representing Asia in the literary works as well as becoming its distinctiveness.

Abstract (sommario):
According to Croissant & Lorenz, Southeast Asia as a region is an extraordinarily diverse collection of states, which vary widely in history, demographics, culture, economy, political systems, and the political challenges they face. Geographically, Southeast Asia is divided into an insular or maritime region, comprising Brunei, Indonesia, parts of Malaysia, the Philippines, and Timor-Leste, and a mainland or continental part, including Burma, Cambodia, Laos, the Malay Peninsula, and Vietnam (Croissant & Lorenz, 2018). Political and cultural synthesis can be seen in the way that Southeast Asian states have adapted to various external influences and internal challenges over time. Political and cultural synthesis can also be seen in the way that Southeast Asian societies have developed their forms of nationalism, identity, and civil society that reflect their diverse ethnic, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. The paper argues that political and cultural synthesis is a key feature and process of Southeast Asia, which is the result of the historical interactions and influences among different religions, cultures, and regions within and outside Asia. The paper analyzes various examples of cultural synthesis in Southeast Asian literature and cinema, and how they reflect and contribute to the diversity and complexity of the region. Abstract (sommario):
The existing literature has highlighted the positive effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on export upgrading and associated terms of trade in developing economies. However, the FDI effect has been found to be negative in South Asia. In this paper, we elaborate on the South Asia-specific effect by emphasizing the role of human capital in the positive link between FDI and terms of trade. We argue that education levels in South Asia have lagged behind those in East Asia and other developing regions. This has resulted in a world market integration strategy in South Asia that specializes in less skills-intensive products and generates associated FDI flows. We demonstrate these patterns for two South Asian economies (Bangladesh and Pakistan) and two East Asian economies (Malaysia and Thailand) for which historical breakdowns of FDI data are available.

Abstract (sommario):
While most Asian students still opt for Western universities when envisioning international destinations, growing numbers turn to Asian countries and their universities. This new development has received increasing attention among practitioners and policy makers, while social science research only recently turned to Asia-to-Asia students’ international flows. This contribution offers, first, a literature review, reflecting on trends and the magnitude of inter-Asian students’ movements. These movements are seen as multiple and complex mobilities, not only in spatial but also in the social and ideational sense. Student strategies in making choices while moving to foreign Asian universities as well as their pathways within the social spaces of universities—paying attention to the multiscalar dimensions of movements and the assemblages they recreate—constitute the second part of the article. The third and main part discusses what we learn about the changing shape of Asia while following students’ pathways and aspirations. These movements shape Asia’s academic space that is embedded in the shifting dimensions of Asian economies, polities, social negotiations, cultures, and values.

PG is a symptom of Gaming Disorder (GD) that has been classified as a mental disorder by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11). Despite the use of Public Service Announcements (PSAs) as a preventive measure in many countries, their effectiveness in increasing the awareness of PG in Asia, particularly in Malaysia is still questionable. The role of PSAs in preventing PG is a topic that deserves closer examination, open to debate and requires a more critical evaluation. The objective of this study is to identify diverse preventive measures employed to prevent PG in Asia, with a specific focus on determining whether PSA has been used or suggested based on empirical support to enhance awareness among Asian youth. A systematic review of the literature between 2015 and 2022 was performed with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology, utilizing Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar as the main sources for the search efforts. We systematically analysed 22 PG and GD prevention articles in Asia between 2015 and 2022, which yielded five main themes which were parent and family prevention, clinical practice, self-control, policy and technology restrictions, and school initiatives. Recommendations for future research in this field have been provided to enhance further understanding and effectiveness of PG and GD prevention efforts in Asia. Keywords: Public service announcement, problematic gaming, prevention, youth, systematic review.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: The COVID-19 vaccine that targets viral mRNA has been created and can be used as an effort to end the COVID-19 pandemic that has hit the world since 2020. The COVID-19 vaccine currently being developed has proven its effectiveness and safety in the general adult population. Objective: To identify reactivation of Herpes Zoster virus post COVID-19 vaccine. Methods: This article review discusses four case reports of Herpes Zoster following the COVID-19 immunization in Asia which were obtained from various sources such as Pubmed Medline Embase. Results: The mRNA-type vaccine is associated with skin manifestations with an increased incidence (14.4%) of Herpes Zoster which was observed around 6-8 days after administration of the first dose of vaccine (BNT162b2 vaccine) and 1.5% after administration of the mRNA- 1273 which occurred in the Asian Oceanian race. COVID-19 vaccine substances such as polyethylene glycol (PEG), the polysorbate present in mRNA vaccines, and polysorbate 80 are suspected causing an allergic reactions. Conclusion: Health workers must be careful in administering the COVID-19 vaccine, especially to individuals who have risk factors that can decrease their immune system so it can cause reactivation of Herpes Zoster.

Abstract (sommario):
The historical evidence suggests that women and men have been considered equal in the path of Tasawuff (Sufism). However, there are few studies that documents and analyse women's presence in South Asian Sufism. This "hagiographical silence" (historically) about Sufi women in South Asia raises questions and needs scholarly attention to address the gaps in the literature. The article explores some of the trends present and related to women and Sufism in South Asia in the existing literature. Drawing on historical sources (secondary material) and employing thematic analysis, the article examines significant trends in women and Sufism in South Asia. These multiple trends include lack of historical evidence, less documentation about Sufi women, paradoxical imagination about women, and gendered roles, all of which point out to the specific context and history of South Asian Sufi culture. The paper problematizes the assumption that Sufism (in general) has been open, inclusive, and accommodative to women and issues of gender. This study also analyses the data and the historical context of how women have been imagined and treated within South Asian Sufism. However, this research is not constructing any generalization and is presenting the analysis within a specific historical and cultural context–South Asia.

Abstract (sommario):
The northern part of the globe is dominated by industrialisation and is well-developed. For many years, the southern part of the world (South Asia, Africa etc.) has been a target of research concentrating on access to energy (mainly electricity) in rural regions. However, the Central Asian region has not been a focus of energy research compared to South East Asia and Africa. Despite plentiful domestically available energy resources, the energy supply in Central Asia is very unevenly distributed between urban and rural areas. Almost half of the total population of Central Asia lives in rural areas and there is a lack of access to modern energy services to meet primary needs. To analyse the energy situation (i.e., electricity, heating, hot water consumption, cooking, etc.) in rural Central Asia, this paper reviews residential energy consumption trends in rural Central Asian regions as compared to urban areas. Furthermore, the paper illustrates the potential of renewable energies in Central Asia. To perform the study, a qualitative comparative analysis was conducted based on a literature review, data, and statistical information. In summary, the presented article discusses the rural energy situation analytically and provides in-depth insights of Central Asian energy infrastructure.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims at creating an ensemble of the various principles of positive organizational scholarship professed in south Asia through ages. This is a review of various scholarly literature published between 1985 and 2020, on how positive organizational scholarship finds its roots in South Asia. Findings. Based on the detailed literature review, it was observed that south Asia has a distinct and rich spiritual culture which has given birth to many positive organisations. Positivity found in these indigenous organisations is strongly rooted in the concept of community development. It is also found that as compared to the western culture, the South Asian culture has been blessed with conscience of spirituality and this culture is capable of leading the entire world to peace, prosperity, and happiness. This study can be viewed as one of the pioneering attempts examining the roots of positive organizational scholarship in South Asia. This paper adds value to the body of existing knowledge by providing new insights into the virtues contributed by South Asia towards POS.

Abstract (sommario):
e18128 Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in never-smokers has emerged as a global health concern, but its cause is undetermined. Epidemiological studies have shown that the disease is frequently observed in East Asia. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has been widely investigated in NSCLC, particularly in Asia. However, few studies have focused on regional differences in the prevalence of HPV in NSCLC tissue from never smokers. Methods: We performed a systematic search of PubMed for articles of HPV infection in human subjects with NSCLC between Jan. 1993 and Dec. 2011. We included studies that used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as the primary HPV detection method. Because smoking status was not fully reported in all studies, we contacted the authors by e-mail to supplement this information. Differences in the distribution of patients with and without HPV infection were tested with the Chi squared test. Results: We identified 42 eligible articles, including 21 from Asian countries (N=2095 NSCLC cases), 17 from European countries (N=1430) and 4 from North and South America (N=160). The HPV prevalence was 28.0% (95% confidence interval (CI): 26.1-30.0%), 8.7% (95% CI: 7.3-10.3%) and 21.2% (95% CI: 15.2-28.4%), respectively. Seven studies from East Asia (N=939) and 4 from Europe (N=569) provided information on smoking status. The number of never smoker was 314 patients (33.4%) in East Asia and 54 patients (9.5%) in Europe. The HPV prevalence in East Asian countries was similar between never and ever smokers (38.2% vs 39.5%, P=0.94) and was significantly higher compared with European countries, where the prevalence was14.8% in never smokers (P<0.001) and 2.9% in ever smokers (P<0.001). In East Asia, the HPV prevalence was particularly high in Taiwan, the central part of China and Okinawa, south of mainland Japan. Conclusions: The prevalence of HPV is high in NSCLC tumor tissues from East Asia. Although the numbers of never smokers from European studies are very small, the different patterns of HPV prevalence from Asian and European countries is intriguing and deserves further study.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract It is quite often argued in the legal and political literatures that Asian nations tend to be more protective of their national sovereignty and thus are often reluctant to follow universal rules or principles provided in international legal materials and texts. Does this “conservative” image of Asian nations correctly reflect the national practices and academic literature of East Asian nations? How do we East Asians perceive the UN collective security system invented at the price of two catastrophic world wars in the 20th century? And why do East Asians need international law to keep peace and security in this region? By trying to find answers to these questions, this article contemplates what role international law will be able to play for the maintenance of peace and security in East Asia.

Abstract (sommario):
Southeast Asia has up to 7,000 higher education institutions with various qualities. The inequality may affect the learning process, such as student engagement. Student engagement is a multidimensional construct that is often positively related to academic achievement. This systematic review aims to get an overview and factors that influence undergraduate students' engagement in Southeast Asian countries. The article search method was carried out through five online databases; ERIC, ProQuest, Scopus, SpringerLink, and Taylor Francis Online, and obtained 11 articles. The articles were extracted using PRISMA flow. As a result, student engagement in Southeast Asia can be described through several dimensions, namely cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and agentic. The theory most widely used is Self-Determination and Social Cognitive Theory. Besides, there are also Broaden-and-Build Theory, Conservation of Resources, and Tinto Integration Model used as the theoretical framework in some studies. For the predictors, undergraduate student engagement in Southeast Asia is more influenced by external factors that will lead to the appearance of internal predictors. Furthermore, these results also show that several demographic factors can be influential, such as age and generation group, university type, and cultural factors. The implication of this study is to consider generational and cultural characteristics to gain a deeper analysis of student engagement. The researchers also provide recommendations for further research, especially for increasing external influence to gain student engagement towards undergraduates.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper studies the unusual features of emerging economy business cycles in Asia. When we assess whether approaches from the previous literature can explain Asian business cycles, we conclude that standard models based on permanent growth shocks do not replicate key features of Asian business cycles. The evidence suggests that different transmission mechanisms explain the connections between consumption, net exports, and export or import in Latin America and Asia. For evidence of a special transmission mechanism, we study durable goods business cycles in Asia (Korea), noting that strong pro-cyclical durable goods consumption may be explained by the export-income channel coupled with market laddering by which firms have expanded the variety and quality of their durable goods production.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe article argues for the utility of infusing the literature on Islamic politics in Southeast Asia with insights that may be gained from the literature on Islamic politics in North Africa and the Middle East. It suggests that such infusion, particularly of more explicitly historical sociology and political economy concerns, could reinvigorate the study of Islamic politics in Southeast Asia, which has been mostly dominated by cultural politics approaches and a concern for issues of doctrinal interpretation. Though this sort of literature has a rich and established tradition, it has lately succumbed to a more superficial security-oriented approach that has grown in influence since the advent of the War on Terror, in which Southeast Asia supposedly acts as a second front. Ironically, security-oriented analysts draw much of the material for their observations about Islamic ‘moderation’ and ‘radicalism’ from cultural politics analyses of Southeast Asian Islamic politics. Analyses based on historical sociology and political economy may provide alternative ways of understanding the evolution of Islamic politics in Southeast Asia by integrating such matters as post-colonial state development, Cold War era conflicts and the transforming effects of capitalist development on its social bases.

Abstract (sommario):
The term “Anthropocene,” coined in the 1980s by the ecologist Eugene F. Stoermer and popularized at the turn of the twenty-first century by the atmospheric chemist and Nobel laureate Paul Crutzen, has been used increasingly in the past decade to highlight human activity as a geological force and to underscore the rapidly escalating impacts of human behaviors on the planet—sufficient, many have argued, to launch a new geological age. While geologists and environmentalists continue to debate the validity of Anthropocene as a formal designation, climate change; mass extinctions of plant and animal species; and widespread pollution of sky, sea, and land make clear the extent to which humans have shaped global ecologies. An understanding of Asia—home to more than half the world's population, an increasingly significant contributor to global carbon dioxide emissions, the site of the Third Pole, and an area acutely vulnerable to climate change and rising sea levels—is vital to an understanding of the physical, chemical, biological, and cultural processes that comprise the Anthropocene.

Abstract (sommario):
Health workers are role models in preventing smoking behavior, yet many are smokers themselves. This study reviews and analyzes the smoking behavior of health workers in Asian countries, based on databases such as PubMed, EBSCO, and Google Scholar in 2013–2018. It is shown that the prevalence of smoking amongst health workers was 4.6–44%, with the nursing profession showing a higher level than other health professions and with a higher ratio of male to female smokers. Health workers are aware of the dangers of smoking, including the effects of cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, oral cancer, atherosclerosis, hypertension, fetal disorders, and infertility. However, the factors that lead to smoking include stress, the influence of friends or family who smoke, and addiction. Health workers are responsible for providing smoking prevention education. However, there are still obstacles to its implementation due to their smoking habits and lack of expertise in educating others. Smoking prohibition policies in the workplace, the training of health workers, and smoking prevention service facilities need to be considered by Asian countries to prevent smoking. Abstract (sommario):
The use of flipped learning as a pedagogical approach has increased in the 21st century. While there is an existing survey of literature regarding the development in American educational institutions – and fewer in an Asian context – there are some unique cultural considerations that may need to be examined regarding flipped learning's adoption and adaptation in Asia. This paper serves as a literature review focusing on several Asian nations with respect to three major considerations in comparison to the United States: geographical, educational, and cultural. After the comprehensive review, which comments on the number of relevant publications available per nation, this paper concludes that there is no significant barrier to the implementation of flipped learning in Asia beyond the existing considerations apparent in the United States (access, time, and institutional support). Additionally, the prevalence of flipped learning in Asia, and the purposes of various studies surveyed, indicate that cultural barriers, at least in this area, are becoming less notable or authoritative as national or historical distinctions are diminishing through Millennials' tendencies toward globalization.

Abstract (sommario):
There is a growing number of single people in the population in Asia, with a higher tendency for single people to be found in the East and Southeast Asia regions. Nevertheless, limited studies are available on the sociopsychological aspects of Asian singles. In fact, societies in many Asian countries have a variety of responses and attitudes toward singles. The overarching purpose of this literature review is, thus, to present many profiles of singles in Asia, although societal acceptance toward singles in each country varies. This study also explores several government policies and social acts that have been implemented to control the rising number of singles, and reviews their effectiveness. Directions for future studies are discussed at the end of this study.

Abstract (sommario):
Using the ‘Global Malaysian Novel’ as a focal point, my paper demonstrates how the emergence of this critical conceptualization is a shift that problematizes traditional postmodern and postcolonial modes that have not yet transcended the nation as a frame of reference. When ‘Global Malaysian Novels’ are being written, marketed and sold outside Malaysian borders, to what extent do these texts retain their capacity for representation: Asian identities, national identities, regional and diasporic? While a critique of their complicity in Global Literary Markets centered in the U.K. and U.S. is often reduced to an ad hominem attack, there remains much to be said about the effects of their increasingly transnational material productions upon their more formally understood aesthetic and literary qualities. As such, I explore the discursive effects of the ‘Global Malaysian Novel’ as a transnational production in Southeast Asia, and how literary scholars have approached contemporary Asian literatures and attempted to situate them within realms of the national, within postcolonial Southeast Asia and within wider World Literature frameworks. In particular, I chart not only the historical production of literary texts written in English in Southeast Asia since 1945, but the current discourse of English Literary studies in the region.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis article analyzes the institutional patterns of eight young democracies in Asia. The analysis originates from Lijphart's majoritarian-consensus framework. It illustrates that neither Lijphart's two-dimensional democracy pattern, nor an alternative pattern exists in Asia. Instead, the review of possible causes for the lack of conformity between Lijphart's patterns of democracy and the reality of the situation in Asia support the criticism in existing research literature regarding some of Lijphart's main assumptions and major conclusions. Furthermore, Asian realities provide only partial support for Lijphart's advice that the consensus option is the more attractive option for countries that designed their first democratic constitutions.

Abstract (sommario):
e22164 Background: Breast cancer incidence is increasing throughout Asia. However, the characteristics of Asian breast cancer are not always well understood due to the limited availability of local data and their inadequate inclusion in global literature databases. Effective breast cancer treatment in this region requires a better understanding of Asian breast cancer biology, including ErbB2 status. Methods: We performed a literature search in seven Asian countries on breast cancer studies in which tumour ErbB2 overexpression was assessed. The keywords erbB2 OR HER2 OR ErbB-2 OR HER-2 AND breast cancer AND (country) were used to search PubMed, international and local conference abstracts and local-language journals from the year 2000 onwards. Where available, we selected up to five representative studies from each country on the basis of population size, multi-institution patient populations, institution reputation and journal impact factor. We excluded studies containing only mRNA, serum, or cell line data or those conducted on biased populations or in western countries on Asian populations. Results: ErbB2 data from 26 Asian breast cancer studies are summarized in the table . The mean or median age of the study populations ranged from 46–56 years, with one exception. In most studies that evaluated tumour ErbB2 and hormone status, ErbB2 over-expression correlated negatively with ER positivity. Conclusions: The larger studies in particular confirm that the proportion of ErbB2-positive breast cancer in Asia is generally similar to the 20–30% reported for western women. Definitions of ErbB2 positivity using IHC vary between institutions and FISH is not routinely performed in several Asian countries. This may contribute to the fact that reliable, representative data on breast tumour ErbB2 status is scarce in Malaysia, the Philippines, India and Thailand. The increased availability of accurate ErbB2 testing and data would aid improved treatment of ErbB2-positive breast cancer in these countries. [Table: see text] [Table: see text]

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACTEven though Southeast Asia is one of the most densely populated regions of the world, its rock art is relatively unknown, and the rock art of Micronesia is even less so. As a starting point for comparing Philippine rock art within the region, a systematic quantitative literature review (SQLR) was conducted to assess the current body of accessible publications. The SQLR resulted in 126 viable references, and characteristics of those references were quantified and analyzed to ascertain the qualities of research published to date. The SQLR results show that scholarship in Southeast Asian rock art is increasing and that the research is dominated by Australia-affiliated scholars. It also quantitatively affirmed that the most noted color for rock art in the region is red and the most commonly identified motif is anthropomorphic. Many motifs found elsewhere in Southeast Asia are notably absent in the known corpus of Philippine rock art. Finally, we discuss SQLR methodology and propose integrating collaborative semantic web applications to increase efficiency and relevance.
