Abstract (sommario):
The addition of various oils to meat analog has been an important topic to improving its juiciness and tenderness. However, this causes a concern about oil leaching from the meat analog during long-term storage. Here, we aimed to assess the storage stability of vegetable-oil-supplemented meat analogs and analyze the effects of temperature and storage period on their physiochemical characteristics. The meat analogs were prepared by adding 30 g castor oil, orange oil, palm oil, shortening, or margarine vegetable oil based on 100 g of textured vegetable protein. They were then stored at −18 or −60 °C for 6 months and analyzed at one-month intervals. The meat analog supplemented with orange oil had the highest water content (64.85%; 66.07%), hardness (35.48 N; 34.05 N), and DPPH-radical-scavenging activity (30.01%; 30.87%) under −18 and −60 °C, respectively, as well as the highest liquid-holding capacity in different conditions. During frozen storage, temperature barely affected the meat quality. The storage stability of all meat analog samples was maintained for 6 months, although the quality was slightly reduced with an increase in storage duration. Coliform group bacteria were not detected regardless of the storage condition. In conclusion, all results supposed that orange oil can be a promising candidate for improving the juiciness and tenderness of meat analogs, and the quality of samples was maintained for at least 6 months under frozen storage. The findings of this study are relevant to the development and promotion of meat analog as an alternative to animal meat.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: This study aimed to explore whether the addition of a cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) analog and isobutylmethylxanthine (IBMX) in freezing media improved sperm quality and what role cAMP has in this recovery. Materials and methods: ach semen sample was cryopreserved into four groups: fresh semen sample, as a control group, freezing medium + 2.5 mM cAMP analog and 0.2 mM IBMX, freezing medium + 12.5 mM cAMP analog and 0.2 mM IBMX, and freezing medium + 25 mM cAMP analog and 0.2 mM IBMX. Sperm parameters after post-thaw were analyzed according to WHO instruction (2010). Viability, acrosome reaction, and DNA damage levels of the samples were evaluated. Results: Our results indicated that the effective concentrations of 12.5 and 25 mM cAMP analog and 0.2 mM IBMX significantly improved the total motility, progressive motility, and viability of the frozen-thawed (P<0.05). However, non-progressive motility and immotile were significantly reduced in the 12.5 and 25 mM cAMP analogs and 0.2 mM IBMX groups after thawing (P<0.05). During freezing the spermatozoa, the high concentration of the cAMP analog increased acrosome reaction after thawing in the 25 mM and 0.2 mM IBMX treated samples (P<0.05). DNA fragmentation in 25 mM cAMP analog and 0.2 mM (IBMX) supplementation was significantly lower compared to the other groups (P<0.05). Conclusions: Our findings revealed that in vitro cAMP analog and IBMX supplementation in freezing media play an important role in preventing cryodamage by maintaining the sperm functional parameters.

Abstract (sommario):
Effect of high-dose insulin analog initiation therapy was evaluated on lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress markers in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Twenty-four T2DM patients with HbA1c levels above 10% despite ongoing therapy with sulphonylurea and metformin were selected. Former treatment regimen was continued for the first day followed by substitution of sulphonylurea therapy with different insulin analogs. Glycemic profiles were determined over 72 hours by Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS), and blood/urine samples were collected at 24 and 72 hours. Insulin analog plus metformin treatment significantly reduced glucose variability. Plasma and urine lipid peroxidation were markedly decreased following insulin analog plus metformin treatment. No correlation existed between glucose variability and levels of plasma and urine oxidative stress markers. Likewise, changes in mean blood glucose from baseline to end point showed no significant correlation with changes in markers of oxidative stress. On the contrary, decreased levels of oxidative stress markers following treatment with insulin analogs were significantly correlated with mean blood glucose levels. In conclusion, insulin plus metformin resulted in a significant reduction in oxidative stress markers compared with oral hypoglycemic agents alone. Data from this study suggests that insulin analogs irrespective of changes in blood glucose exert inhibitory effects on free radical formation.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract We study satellite counts and quenched fractions for satellites of Milky Way analogs in Romulus25, a large-volume cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. Depending on the definition of a Milky Way analog, we have between 66 and 97 Milky Way analogs in Romulus25, a 25 Mpc per-side uniform volume simulation. We use these analogs to quantify the effect of environment and host properties on satellite populations. We find that the number of satellites hosted by a Milky Way analog increases predominantly with host stellar mass, while environment, as measured by the distance to a Milky Way–mass or larger halo, may have a notable impact in high isolation. Similarly, we find that the satellite quenched fraction for our analogs also increases with host stellar mass, and potentially in higher-density environments. These results are robust for analogs within 3 Mpc of another Milky Way–mass or larger halo, the environmental parameter space where the bulk of our sample resides. We place these results in the context of observations through comparisons to the Exploration of Local VolumE Satellites and Satellites Around Galactic Analogs surveys. Our results are robust to changes in Milky Way analog selection criteria, including those that mimic observations. Finally, as our samples naturally include Milky Way–Andromeda pairs, we examine quenched fractions in pairs versus isolated systems. We find potential evidence, though not conclusive, that pairs, defined as being within 1 Mpc of another Milky Way–mass or larger halo, may have higher satellite quenched fractions.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2011.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 84-86).
The performance of electronic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at high sampling rates is fundamentally limited by the timing jitter of electronic clocks. To circumvent this limitation, one method is to exploit the orders-of-magnitude lower timing jitter of mode-locked lasers and implement optical sampling as a front-end for electronic ADCs. The optical-sampling, wavelength-demultiplexing approach to A/D conversion, which is explored in this thesis, offers key benefits such as ease of scalability to higher aggregate sampling rates via passive wavelength-division demultiplexing (WDM) filters and potential for full integration via silicon photonics platform for chip-scale signal processing applications. This thesis will first cover the design issues for each stage in the optically-sampled, wavelength-demultiplexed photonic ADC architecture, followed by experimental results from two system demonstrations. Digitization of a 41-GHz signal with 7.0 effective bits at a sampling rate of 2 GSa/s was demonstrated with a discrete-component photonic ADC, which corresponds to 15 fs of jitter, a 4-5 times improvement over state-of-the-art electronic ADCs. On the way towards an integrated photonic ADC, a silicon chip with core photonic components was fabricated and used to digitize a 10-GHz signal with 3.5 effective bits. Drop-port transmission measurements of an integrated 20-channel WDM filter bank are included to show potential for high sampling rate operation with 10 effective bits.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) paradigm consists of the application of biological “neural” models to the solution of particular problems that often are very hard to solve for the classical “Von Neumann” architectures. Different are the approaches proposed in literature for the implementation of an ANN. Some of them are software implementations only while, others are circuital solutions as full custom digital circuits or programmed FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array) as well as analogue circuits and the typology of the implementation certainly depends on the length of the processing time that you believe adequate for the particular application. This thesis is focused on the design of new analogue circuits well suited for Neural Network applications. In particular, the class of the Cellular Neural Networks (CNN), proposed in 1981 by Prof. L.O.Chua (University of California - Berkeley), will be exploited. In this area, the “Laboratorio Circuiti” at University of Rome “Tor Vergata” designed and manufactured several analogue chips devoted to this class of Neural Networks. These chips belong to the Digital Programmable CNN (DPCNN) chip family and present two main features: the digital programmability of the synaptic weights as well as a special architecture oriented to an interconnection structure (i.e. it is possible to carry out large network by connecting together more of these chips). In this thesis work you will find an overview about the Artificial Neural Network, the Cellular Neural Network and the Star Cellular Neural Network: what they are, how they work and why they are useful. In particular, the DP-CNN chip family will be deeply described. This thesis proposes the TD-CNN (Time Division CNN), a particular design strategy, devoted to reduce the silicon area occupation of the a elementary cell in order to improve the VLSI integrability of the network. Moreover, the same time-division strategy will be applied to TD-Star CNN. In particular, these circuits consist of the digitally programmable non-linearity circuits (i.e. the Digital Programmable Transconductance Amplifier - DPTA and Digital Programmable Transconductance Comparator – DTPC) and special circuit for to carry out the multiplexing feature (i.e. the Dynamic Mirror Sample and Hold – DM-SH and the Multiplexer – DM-MUX). Several circuital simulations will be shown in order to study the behavior of this modified architecture and the modifications on the dynamics introduced by the time division strategy.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of this Master's thesis was to design and implement a low power Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) used for sensor measurements. In the complete measurement unit, in which the ADC is part of, different sensors will be measured. One set of these sensors are three strain gauges with weak output signals which are to be pre-amplified before being converted. The focus of the application for the ADC has been these sensors as they were considered a limiting factor. The report describes theory for the algorithmic and incremental converter as well as a hybrid converter utilizing both of the two converter structures. All converters are based on one operational amplifier and they operate in repetitive fashions to obtain power efficient designs on a small chip area although at low conversion rates. Two converters have been designed and implemented to different degrees of completeness. One is a 13 bit algorithmic (or cyclic) converter which uses a switching scheme to reduce the problem of capacitor mismatch. This converter was implemented at transistor level and evaluated separately and to some extent also with sub-components. The second converter is a hybrid converter using both the operation of the algorithmic and incremental converter to obtain 16 bits of resolution while still having a fairly high sample rate.

Abstract (sommario):
A variety of tools have been developed to assist in the quantification and analysis of naturalistic language samples. In recent years, computer technology has been employed in language sample analysis. This study compares a new automated index, Scoring Sentences Developmentally (SSD), to two existing measures. Eighty samples from three corpora were manually analyzed using DSS and MLU and the processed by the automated software. Results show all three indices to be highly correlated, with correlations ranging from .62 to .98. The high correlations among scores support further investigation of the psychometric characteristics of the SSD software to determine its clinical validity and reliability. Results of this study suggest that SSD has the potential to compliment other analysis procedures in assessing the language development of young children.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter begins with a definition of spin Hall effects, which are a group of phenomena that result from spin–orbit interaction. These phenomena link orbital motion to spin direction and act as a spin-dependent magnetic field. In its simplest form, an electrical current gives rise to a transverse spin current that induces spin accumulation at the boundaries of the sample, the direction of the spins being opposite at opposing boundaries. It can be intuitively understood by analogy with the Magnus effect, where a spinning ball in a fluid deviates from its straight path in a direction that depends on the sense of rotation. spin Hall effects can be associated with a variety of spin-orbit mechanisms, which can have intrinsic or extrinsic origin, and depend on the sample geometry, impurity band structure, and carrier density but do not require a magnetic field or any kind of magnetic order to occur.

Abstract (sommario):
Learn how to maximize your library's resources, gain access to more resources in your community, promote services, and reach new segments of the population through partnerships—with businesses, with schools, with other nonprofit organizations. Drawing on their experiences in developing successful partnerships with a variety of organizations, these authors show you how to go about creating productive and mutually beneficial community partnerships. They also explain how to avoid some of the common partnership pitfalls along the way. Based on what has become widely known as the WRL model, the guide begins with the rationale for partnerships and the organizational library structures needed; and then shows you how and with whom to form partnerships, how to handle challenges that may arise, how to meet partners, and how to create and maintain mechanisms for tracking and evaluating partnerships. The authors use the analogy of courtship to clarify the various phases of partnership development: glances, dating, engagement, and marriage. Brimming with samples and reproducible forms, this practical hands-on guide contains everything you need to get started on the partnership path.

Abstract (sommario):
Samples from both hydrothermal and melt growth techniques were characterized for absorption, index of refraction, and photorefractive dynamics. Doped hydrothermal samples possessed similar photorefractive properties to nominally undoped melt growth samples. BSO operates over a wide range of wavelengths, and it would be desirable to maintain the sensitivity of BSO while controlling the absorption coefficient at wavelengths into the infrared laser-diode operating region. The doped hydrothermal crystal is very transparent, having a light green color. In addition, a variety of response times may be useful in implementing optical analog devices in analogue to electronic devices. For example, heavy doping with chrome produces a dark, almost black, sample with an extremely long response time.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Asteroid porosity ranges from 0 to >50%, with most >20%, and some asteroids exhibit a water feature in their reflection spectra. Porosity and hydration are expected to influence the momentum transferred in hypervelocity collisions. We conducted a series of measurements of the post-impact momentum, characterized by a factor β, the ratio of the total linear momentum acquired by the target to the momentum of the impactor. We measured β for anhydrous meteorites, samples of their asteroidal parent bodies, spanning a wide range of porosities: 7 samples of the CV3 carbonaceous chondrite Northwest Africa (NWA) 4502 (2.1% porosity), 7 samples of the ordinary chondrite NWA 869 (6.4% porosity), and 4 samples of the ordinary chondrite Saratov (15.6% porosity), as well as 2 samples of terrestrial pumice (80% porosity). We also measured hydrous meteorite analog targets, including 2 samples of terrestrial serpentine (17.9% porosity) and 4 samples of terrestrial montmorillonite (51.5% porosity), the two clay minerals that dominate the composition of the hydrous CI carbonaceous chondrite meteorites, as well as 4 samples of hydrous meteorite analog material prepared by powdering and hydrating an anhydrous carbonaceous chondrite. We found that for both anhydrous and hydrous samples β decreased with increasing porosity, consistent with hydrocode modeling. The β for each target type was >2 demonstrating that crater ejecta makes a significant contribution to recoil in hypervelocity collisions.. The β values we measured for the anhydrous samples are larger, with β = 3.55 for NWA 4502, 2.69 for NWA 869, 2.10 for Saratov, and 2.15 for pumice, than results from hydrocode modeling for 10 km/s impacts into relatively strong, porous rock targets. The momentum enhancement by ejecta (β - 1) for the moderate porosity (17.9%) hydrous serpentine targets (β = 4.70), the highly porous (51.55% porosity) hydrous montmorillonite targets (β = 2.79), and the intermediate porosity (~26%) CI-analogs (β = 2.99) are much larger than β value for anhydrous targets of similar porosity, indicating jetting of water vapor could significantly affect deflection of hydrous asteroids and comets in natural or human-induced collisions.

Abstract (sommario):
Analog X-Ray radiography is still used in many underdeveloped regions around the world. To allow these populations to benefit from advances in automatic computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, X-Ray films must be digitized. Unfortunately, this procedure may introduce artefacts which may severely impair the performance of such systems. This work investigates the impact digitized images may cause to deep neural networks trained for lung (semantic) segmentation on digital x-ray samples. While three public datasets for lung segmentation evaluation exist for digital samples, none are available for digitized data. To this end, a U-Net architecture was trained on publicly available data, and used to predict lung segmentation on a newly annotated set of digitized images. Our results show that the model is capable to effectively identify lung segmentation at digital X-Rays with a high intra-dataset (PR AUC: 0.99) and cross-dataset (PR AUC: 0.99) performances on unseen test data. When challenged against analog imaged films, the performance is substantially degraded (PR AUC: 0.90). Our analysis further suggests that the use of maximum F1 and precision-recall AUC (PR AUC) measures are not informative to identify segmentation problems in images.

Abstract (sommario):
Sensing of analogue signals such as voltage, temperature, pressure, current etc. is required to acquire the real time analog signals in the form digital streams. Most of the static analog signals are converted into voltage using sensors, transducers etc. and then measured using ADCs. The digitized samples from ADC are collected either through serial or parallel interface and processed by the programmable chips such as processors, controllers, FPGAs, SOCs etc. In some cases, Multichannel supported ADCs are used to save the layout area when the functionalities are to be realized in a small form factor. In such scenarios, parallel interface for each channel is not a preferred interface considering the more number of interfaces / traces between the components. Hence, Custom, Sink synchronized, Configurable multichannel ADC soft IP core has been developed using VHDL coding to interwork with multichannel supported, time division multiplexed ADCs with serial interface. The developed IP core can be used either as it is with the SPI interface as specified in this paper or with necessary modifications / configurations. The configurations can be the number of channels, sample size, sampling frequency, data transfer clock, type of synchronization – source / sink, control signals and the sequence of the operations performed to configure ADC. The efficiency of implementation is validated using the measurements of throughput, and accuracy for the required range of input with acceptable tolerances. ZYNQ FPGA and LTC2358 ADC are used to evaluate the developed IP core. Integrated Logic Analyser (ILA) which is an integrated verification tool of Vivado is used for Verification.

Abstract (sommario):
A considerable background of prior work indicates that corrosion damaged casing in gas storage wells is largely due to the development of individual corrosion pits, which occur either on the inside or outside wall of the casing. Such pits are inevitably the result of electrochemical potentials, which are established between unlike conductive materials in an electrolyte. Damage is the result of localized loss of metal, which can be assessed in terms of the size of these individual corrosion flaws. Magnetic corrosion logging has been available for at least 25 years, but has not received wide acceptance as a basis for making intelligent repair decisions. An earlier PRCI-sponsored research study concluded that the best approach to short term improvement in the performance of current corrosion logging practice was the application of modern digital data acquisition techniques to one specific type of magnetic logging, namely, flux leakage or magnetic perturbation measurements. In this research program, experimental equipment of this type has been developed and demonstrated in conjunction with a cooperative effort with one of the logging companies (Dresser-Atlas). This equipment replaces the electronics assembly in the commercial instrument with a new package which samples each of the 12 (or 24) analog flux leakage sensor signals at a rate of either 86.8 or 173.6 samples per second, depending upon whether 24 of the sensors or only 12 are being sampled. The signals are digitized at this rate under the control of a downhole microprocessor, which formatsthe digital data into a serial bit stream and transmits it to the surface over standard logging cable. The data transmission system uses Manchester encoding and performs the data transfer at a maximum rate of 40,000 bits per second.

Abstract (sommario):
COVID-19 has created an unprecedented global health crisis that caused millions of infections and deaths worldwide. Many, however, argue that pre-existing social inequalities have led to inequalities in infection and death rates across social classes, with the most-deprived classes are worst hit. In this paper, we derive semi/non-parametric estimators of Health Concentration Curve (HC) that can quantify inequalities in COVID-19 infections and deaths and help identify the social classes that are most at risk of infection and dying from the virus. We express HC in terms of copula function that we use to build our estimators of HC. For the semi-parametric estimator, a parametric copula is used to model the dependence between health and socio-economic variables. The copula function is estimated using maximum pseudo-likelihood estimator after replacing the cumulative distribution of health variable by its empirical analogue. For the non-parametric estimator, we replace the copula function by a Bernstein copula estimator. Furthermore, we use the above estimators of HC to derive copula-based estimators of health Gini coeffcient. We establish the consistency and the asymptotic normality of HC’s estimators. Using different data-generating processes and sample sizes, a Monte-Carlo simulation exercise shows that the semiparametric estimator outperforms the smoothed nonparametric estimator, and that the latter does better than the empirical estimator in terms of Integrated Mean Squared Error. Finally, we run an extensive empirical study to illustrate the importance of HC’s estimators for investigating inequality in COVID-19 infections and deaths in the U.S. The empirical results show that the inequalities in state’s socio-economic variables like poverty, race/ethnicity, and economic prosperity are behind the observed inequalities in the U.S.’s COVID-19 infections and deaths.

Abstract (sommario):
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 (RHDV2) has caused dramatic declines in rabbits and hares on several continents, with cascading effects on local ecology. Recent mortalities have been reported for several rabbit and hare species in the United States, suggesting broad susceptibility of lagomorphs. If this susceptibility extends to the American pika (Ochotona princeps), the most cold-adapted lagomorph, it could compound climate-mediated threats to this species. Due to climate change, American pikas are predicted to experience significant upslope range retraction during this century. Using an analogy borrowed from wildfire scenarios, other lagomorph species occurring at lower and mid-elevations could act as ?ladder fuels? to wick RHDV2 into high-elevation pika populations. To address this concern, we investigated spatial patterns of habitat use by pikas and other lagomorphs in Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve (GRSA), which borders several counties that have reported RHDV2. In 2022, we surveyed 115 plots from a spatially balanced sample of pika habitats in the park, including 48 legacy plots from a pika survey conducted in 2010-2012. Pika detections at the plot level were paired with topographic and environmental indices to estimate minimum habitat occupancy and determine its covariates. Leporid (rabbit and hare) detections at these same plots were used to model presence using similar covariates and correcting for imperfect detection. Our best-supported models of pika and leporid presence were then used to estimate the probability of contact between these taxa within the park. Our mean estimate of pika habitat occupancy was at least 95% during 2022 in GRSA, slightly higher than in 2010-2012, and effects of elevation and precipitation on pika occupancy were as expected from the previous study. Leporid presence at these same plots was 48% after correcting for imperfect detection. The best model of leporid presence supported a negative effect of elevation, in agreement with other studies of these taxa. The best pika and leporid models also included a positive effect of incoming solar radiation. Finally, we used our best models of pika habitat occupancy and leporid presence within the park to map the potential for areas of contact and RHDV2 transmission between these taxa. Our results indicate some potential for contact within subalpine forests, Specifically in the northern half of the park near the lower reach of the Sand Creek Trail and in the far south just north of California Peak.
