Broyles, Michael. "Music and Class Structure in Antebellum Boston". Journal of the American Musicological Society 44, n. 3 (1991): 451–93. http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/831646.

Abstract (sommario):
The division of American musical culture into a cultivated and vernacular tradition may be traced in large measure to developments in antebellum Boston. It was there that American writers first argued fervently for the association of Platonic idealism with secular instrumental music, and some of these same individuals established the symphony orchestra as the musical medium most capable of realizing their ideals. Musical developments in antebellum Boston were affected by the class structure, which was closely related to religious preference. The upper class, mostly Unitarian, did not participate significantly in music until the late 1830s. The middle class, mostly congregational, favored religious, amateur performing ensembles. The socioeconomic elite began to support music in the 1830s. Led by Samuel A. Eliot, three-time Mayor of Boston, they wrested control of the Boston Academy of Music from the Congregational evangelicals and made it the premier secular musical institution of the city. The Academy featured the first successful symphony orchestra in Boston and one of the first in the country. Ironically, however, Eliot's motivations, which were articulated in several important articles, harked back to early federal Republican concepts of creating a homogeneous society through a commonly shared culture. They contrasted sharply with the more insular goals of the nineteenth-century socioeconomic elite, who wished to use music as a means of distancing themselves from other segments of society. Eliot's vision ultimately was not realized, but his efforts did much to establish the symphony orchestra in American society as well as the notion of high musical culture itself. As such Eliot is an major, although hitherto ignored, figure in American musical history.

Abstract (sommario):
We examined the publication trends of faculty in 396 CACREP-accredited counselor education and supervision (CES) programs based on Carnegie classification by exploring 5,250 publications over the last decade in 21 American Counseling Association and American Counseling Association division journals. Using Bayesian statistics, this study expounded upon existing literature and differences that exist between institution classifications and total publications. The results of this study can be used to inform the training and preparation of doctoral students in CES programs through a Happenstance Learning Theory framework, specifically regarding their role as scholars and researchers. We present implications and argue for the importance of programs and faculty providing research experience for doctoral students in order to promote career success and satisfaction.

Abstract (sommario):
Today’s sexuality education emphasizes risk reduction rather than sexual health and pleasure, Mary Calderone’s original vision. Some programs, developed outside the school system, do show possibilities for something richer and more positive. This chapter describes the history of two such programs, those of the Unitarian Universalist Association and of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. But even these programs run into opposition from parents who must be respectfully engaged in preparatory education to disarm many understandable fears and misunderstandings. And even so, disputes do arise. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of a recent—ultimately successful—campaign in Worcester, Massachusetts, New England’s second largest city, to launch a comprehensive sex-education program. Interference from outside organizations such as Focus on the Family and a lack of inclusiveness in the planning process initially frightened the local School Committee and many families into opposing it. The campaign was successful only after a three-year effort. Sex education has changed over the decades in some ways, but its fundamentally defensive and fearful approach to sexuality still prevails in much of the country.

Abstract (sommario):
Chapter 1 discusses the roots of rehabilitation psychology, which are found in the assessment and treatment of persons with a disability, whether congenital or acquired, and how the growth and development of the field can be traced in large part to care provided to returning veterans. It covers the establishment of Division 22 of the American Psychological Association (APA) and of a specialty competency examination board, the American Board of Rehabilitation Psychology (ABRP), which were significant historical milestones. Lastly, it addresses how Rehabilitation Psychology continues to refine standards of education, training and experience, delineating a route toward board certification as well as continuing education offerings to enable maintenance of competence by practicing clinicians.

Byun, Hoonseok, Jonghae Kim, Youngho Son e Banuk Park. "Recent Activity of KEPIC Application for Construction and Operation of Nuclear Power Plants in Korea". In ASME 2010 Pressure Vessels and Piping Division/K-PVP Conference. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2010-25530.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Korea Electric Power Industry Code (KEPIC), a set of integrated standards applicable to the design, construction and operation of electric power facilities including nuclear power plants, has been developed on the basis of referring to the prevailing U.S. codes and standards which had been applied to the electric power facilities in Korea. KEPIC has been applied to the construction of Ulchin Nuclear Units 5&6 since 1997 as per the endorsement of Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST), and is being completely applied to the construction of Shin-Kori and Shin-Wolsung Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) in Korea. Although the technical requirements of KEPIC related to design and inspections for pressure vessels have been developed on the basis of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), Korea Electric Association (KEA) that is KEPIC maintenance organization is trying to find and improve unreasonable requirements based on the acquired experiences for the continuous construction and operation of NPPs. In the administrative requirements, KEPIC, unlike ASME, adopted not only mechanical field but also electrical field related to NPPs. Furthermore, the qualifying system for services such as Nondestructive Examination, Heat Treatment, Design and Equipment Qualification Organization was adopted to improve safety and reliability for NPPs. In the technical requirements, KEA has been performing betterment study such as pressures for system hydrostatic test, temperatures for Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) of P-No. 4 materials, counterbore for Pre-Service Inspection (PSI) of elbows in piping systems. The construction method of Steel Plate Concrete (SC) structure studied by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP), has been adopted to KEPIC, recently. In the case of inservice NPPs, KEA is trying to establish the equivalent material tables for ASME unassigned materials to solve problems of material during the Repair & Replacement step. KEA is performing development study for Standard Welding Procedure Specification (SWPS) which can be used for production weld without any specific procedure qualification test performed by manufacturers in order to improve reliability and reduce costs. The SWPS will be adopted in KEPIC-MQW Appendix. KEA hopes to collaborate and grow with other Standard Development Organizations (SDOs) through the above efforts.

At KRIHS, the National Infrastructure Research Division coordinated the project and the Global Development Partnership Center provided the funding. Pangyo is a new city built from 2003 onwards near Seoul with a vision to become the Silicon Valley of Korea. Approximately 75 million USD of the development gain was allocated to smart city implementation, which took place in one shot within 3-4 years along with the city construction. Pangyo classifies its services into smart portal, facility management, security, disaster, and environment. Interesting aspects of Pangyo are the use of smart kiosk media boards for information provision and real-time management of street lights and waterworks. Key advantage of Pangyo is the low concern for investment overlap from simultaneous development of new city and smart city system, which also enabled high degree of integration of various functions in a spacious smart city operation center as well as utilization of fiber-optic network. Pangyo is currently making various attempts to generate revenue to cover maintenance cost through attracting advertisement on media boards and kiosks, and providing education contents to citizens at low charge.
