Lemkin, Sarah Judith Katherine. "How schools and youth provision support the wellbeing of all young people and lesbian, gay and bisexual young people in particular". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2012. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10020684/.

Abstract (sommario):
There is significant evidence of the difficulties experienced by Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) young people and the negative impact of those difficulties. It is argued that the psychological difficulties that some LGB young people experience are through the internalisation of heteronormative social messages and thus emphasis should be placed on changing the social context in order to promote the wellbeing of LGB young people. This focus on well being mirrors interest in promoting the wellbeing of all young people. The current study drew on a Positive Psychology framework to explore support for the well being of all young people and LGB young people in particular in secondary schools and youth provision. A case study approach was adopted. The site of the study was an area in a Local Authority in the South East of England with high levels of deprivation. The settings were a secondary school and a LGB youth group. Individual interviews were conducted with three school staff, the LGB group youth worker and an Educational Psychologist. Group interviews were conducted with pupils from Years 8, 10 and 12 and a group of LGB young people attending the LGB youth group. Interview transcripts were analysed for common themes using thematic analysis. Findings were discussed in terms of five important processes considered to promote wellbeing; 'promoting equality', 'preventing harm', 'supporting relationships', 'meeting needs' and 'understanding sexualities'. Although ways in which schools can promote wellbeing were reported, a number of difficulties were also reported. Thus, the Positive Psychology framework was adjusted to incorporate both what was supportive of as well as what compromised wellbeing. It is argued that those processes informed by convivial practices promote wellbeing and those informed by heteronormative practices compromise the wellbeing of LGB young people. Implications for Educational Psychologists' practice were discussed in terms of supporting schools and other agencies to promote convivial practices and reduce heteronormative practices in order to support the wellbeing of all young people and LGB young people in particular.

Abstract (sommario):
In his two-volume account of Christian beginnings Luke fills out for already instructed Theophilus Mark’s account of Jesus, and extends it to tell of the bringing of ‘good news’ for all people, offering a tested alternative to the pagan world-view, worthy to be adopted by citizens of the Roman empire. Primarily employing ‘redaction-critical’ methods and seeking narrative patterns with variations within the whole text, we analyse the roles of Peter in the first half of Acts and the influences upon Luke in their making. They portray the pattern of apostolic witness in message, deed and life, and anticipate the extending of the mission to Gentiles, which is taken up in a heroic way by Paul in the second half of Acts. Then analysing Luke’s reshaping of the account of Peter before Easter in his first volume, we show it is done with an eye to how it will be completed in Acts, how Peter will repent from denying Jesus to strengthen his brother apostles and urge repentance on his fellow-Jews. Luke’s captivating narrative is persuasive for its implied reader in the context of the post-apostolic age, that the apostolic kerygma proclaims the divine gift of salvation expected by Israel’s prophets, despite its rejection by much of Judaism. The missions of Paul are to be received as being in harmony with Peter’s. A foundation has been established which will outface Christian rivalries and strengthen believers under persecution. The influence of Luke’s account on other early Christian writers is tested where evidence is available. Luke’s success is that his account became, almost without rival, the canonical New Testament account of Christian beginnings.

Tinch, Dugald. "Upland landscapes : what do people want, who wants it and can they have it all?" Thesis, University of Stirling, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/2753.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The objective of this thesis is to investigate the preferences of individuals for the management of upland landscapes in the UK. Environmental valuation techniques are becoming an increasingly important tool in the development of environmental management policy, however, they are not without their detractors. In particular a school of thought, developed from the work of Bentham, takes issue with the behavioural foundations of the dominant welfare economic doctrine which underpins many of the valuation techniques commonly adopted. They identify that heuristic rules, experience and memory can all play a role in the development of ‘value’ for a good. This thesis aims to investigate the roles of these, along with the role of association with an environmental good, in the development of value for upland landscapes using the Peak District National Park as a case study. This objective is developed in three parts. Part I introduces the topic, identifies the background of research against which this thesis is presented and introduces the case study. This part also attempts to identify how well the complex economy – ecology interactions in this landscape are understood by stakeholders. It shows that, given the complexities of the systems, there are key omissions in stakeholder knowledge and understanding. Part II uses Discrete Choice Experiments to analyse the impact on value of experience, memory, heuristics and association. A series of experiments are applied to the same landscape characteristics in order to achieve this. The results show that value can be impacted in a number of ways with implications for the development of future valuation studies. This thesis concludes with a discussion of the policy implications, limitations and future work associated with this research.

Abstract (sommario):

Kiata-Holland, Elizabeth. "‘All in a day’s work’ : the lifeworld of older people in New Zealand rest homes". Thesis, University of Auckland, 2010. https://researchspace.auckland.ac.nz/handle/2292/6098.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This doctoral thesis contributes to critical gerontology research by investigating the lived experiences of residents in the everyday world of New Zealand rest homes. There is a need to understand how frail rest home residents experience "age". This study focuses on describing and understanding residents lived experiences. As the New Zealand population is ageing, this phenomenological focus adds clarity to the poorly understood lived experiences about being aged in rest homes. Policy initiatives such as the Positive Ageing Strategy with its emphasis on keeping older people living in the community largely ignore the life practices of the increasing proportions of frail older people who require long-term residential care. My mixed-methods modified framework approach draws on the lifeworld as understood by Max van Manen (1990) and Alfred Schütz (1972). The lifeworld is made up of thematic strands of lived experience: these being lived space, lived time, lived body and lived relations with others, which are both the source and object of phenomenological research (van Manen, 1990). These strands are temporarily unravelled and considered in-depth for 27 residents who took part in audio-recorded interviews, before being interwoven through a multiple-helix model, into an integrated interpretation of the residents‟ lifeworld. Supplementing and backgrounding the interviews with these residents, are descriptive data including written interview summaries and survey findings about the relationships and pastimes of 352 residents living in 21 rest homes, which are counted and described. The residents day-to-day use of rest home space, mediated temporal order, self-managed bodies and minds, and negotiated relationships are interpreted. The mythology of the misery of rest home life is challenged, and a more constructive critical gerontology approach is offered. Findings of this research reveal how meanings around daily work practices are constructed by the residents. These elders participate in daily rest home life, from the sidelines or not at all, as they choose or are able, and this always involves work for the residents. They continue to actively manage satisfactory and fulfilling pastimes and relationships, because in their ordinary, everyday lifeworld it is “all in a day‟s work”.

Russo, Thiago Pereira. "Análise formal de All my sons e de An enemy of the people, de Arthur Miller". Universidade de São Paulo, 2014. http://www.teses.usp.br/teses/disponiveis/8/8147/tde-01122014-105930/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
A presente pesquisa busca analisar e comparar as peças All My Sons [Todos Eram Meus Filhos] (1947) e An Enemy of the People [Um Inimigo do Povo] (1951), do dramaturgo norte-americano Arthur Miller (19152005).
The research focuses on the analysis and comparison of the plays All My Sons (1947) and An Enemy of the People (1951), by American playwright Arthur Miller (19152005). In two crucially important moments of American History (PostWar period and McCarthyism, respectively) Miller turns to Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen (18281906) to respond both artistically and politically to these situations. Such a response had a strong impact on the formal structure of the plays at a time in which Arthur Miller was almost giving up on being a dramatist. In All My Sons, the Analytical Technique, theorized by Peter Szondi in Theory of Modern Drama, places the past and its analysis on stage as essential elements of action, fundamentally contradicting the strict principles of drama. The Greco-Ibsen structure present in the play is also one of the elements that helps the play reach a remarkable effect in which form and content interact dialectically and contribute to exalt Arthur Millers position as a singular figure among other American dramatists. In An Enemy of the People, Miller turns to Ibsen once again in a direct way by choosing this play which had been originally written by the Norwegian playwright himself and now adapted by Arthur Miller in the context of McCarthyism. Its form, according to what Raymond Williams says in Modern Tragedy, is that of the Liberal Tragedy whose most essential mark is to discuss the struggle of man against his own society. The proximities and detachments between both versions (Ibsens and Millers) will lead to some reflection about which kind of adaptation Arthur Miller tried to have and how it endorsed a formal advance. The study and elucidation of the formal process in which both plays are rooted, point out to a merging of Millers ideals as a writer and citizen which helped revolutionize the American theater. By writing such plays, Miller attests the need to think and reflect, bringing the fury, the lucidity and the coherence of Henrik Ibsen to the eye of the storm within the United States

Alexander, Valerie J. "Where have all the people gone? A policy review and geospatial analysis of Hope VI in Atlanta". DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 2015. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/3135.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study examines the federally-funded HOPE VI initiative as it relates to affordable housing in Atlanta. It examines spatial and social outcomes experienced by residents of the now-demolished public housing units. Findings indicate, inter alia, that the voices of residents were either ignored or excluded in the policymaking decisions of the Atlanta Housing Authority. A case study analysis approach was used to analyze data gathered from three sources: primary data collected from an original online survey, primary data gathered from personal interviews with community stakeholders, and secondary survey and focus group data from two evaluation studies of Capitol Homes revitalization. The researcher found that, while there are still barriers to sustainability and self-sufficiency, most of the residents who were displaced are generally satisfied with their living environment post relocation. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that more evaluations are necessary to determine long-term outcomes of relocated residents. Furthermore, residents - as beneficiaries and stakeholders of housing policy - should have an equal voice in housing development decisions of the Atlanta Housing Authority and its partners.

Eriksson, Hanna. "Urban green spaces for all people : Supplying green spaces in Stockholm municipality from a social sustainability perspective". Thesis, KTH, Hållbar utveckling, miljövetenskap och teknik, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-286212.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
As many cities face the challenges of urbanisation, effective provision of urban green spaces (UGS) is needed. There is an identified need to explore the potential to supply green spaces for municipalities and the challenges they face. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to look closer at the potential and challenges of supplying UGS from a social sustainability perspective in Stockholm municipality. The focus is to examine how the municipality can achieve their goal of supplying good access to UGS, that meets the diverse needs of people. To do so, the implication of good access for all people was first explored on a theoretical level with a literature review. Secondly, to establish a link from the theory and policy to the practical work, the experiences and knowledge of practitioners and consultants in the Stockholm context was explored with an interview study. Specifically, how planning tools and way of working can support, which was the main focus of the study. The results from the literature review indicates that different social factors may influence the perceived access and usage of UGS. Safety issues was the most noted factor that could have a negative effect for the perceived access to UGS. The interview study indicates that planning tools that are used within Stockholm municipality can enable to achieve the goal of good access for all people by a more intentional planning. However, the way of working in the planning process is critical. It requires a holistic mindset and the social perspectives needs to be integrated throughout the whole planning process. Social factors, such as safety concerns, are considerable for UGS planning, but also challenging to capture and incorporate into the planning process. To be able to reduce the gap between theory and practice, more unified research has to be done, to know more about what factors that influence perception of access, and the diverse preferences and needs that exists for UGS. This is needed to enable for practitioners to have a more solid knowledge ground for their work in providing UGS that can contribute to social sustainability in cities.

Abstract (sommario):
This essay analyzes the changing portrayal of Yugoslavia's World War II experience in music, film, and literature. It argues that the disappearance of unifying themes from the cultural sphere opened the doors to the popularization of controversial and divisive subjects. Shifting perceptions of how Yugoslavs fought and survived the Second World War contributed to the destruction of Yugoslavia.
The first chapter focuses on World War II in Yugoslavia. The second chapter discusses the early development of Yugoslav culture and its dependence on the Second World War. The third chapter follows the development of Yugoslav culture through the 1960s and 1970s when political liberalization promoted greater freedom in the arts. Aside from inspiring artists to address new themes and approach old themes from a fresh perspective, it also permitted the stirrings of political dissent. The fourth chapter addresses the disappearance of the Yugoslav idea from the cultural realm during the 1980s.

Banda, Dennis. "Education for All (EFA) and 'African Indigenous Knowledge Systems (AIKS)' : the case of the Chewa People of Zambia". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2008. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/10525/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This research is an investigation of whether 'African Indigenous Knowledge Systems (AIKS)' can enhance the achievement of Education for All (EFA) with particular reference to the Chewa people of Zambia. The study raises challenges that many countries have experienced in their effort to achieve EFA. Among the Chewa people of Zambia, quality, relevance and credibility of the education are some of the reasons affecting the provision of education to all. This research has argued that formal schooling education, in its current form may not be the right vehicle to deliver EFA goals. The research has proposed alternative forms of knowledge that could be hybridized with the formal schooling education to address some of the challenges identified. The research has tried to re-appropriate some Chewa AIKS to theorize curriculum and pedagogy reforms that could enhance the achievement of the EFA goals. I have used qualitative research methodology in the study. The respondents in this study were drawn from two areas of community of practice i.e. the Chewa traditional chiefs and elders as perceived custodians of the Chewa AIKS and the educationists, as implementers of education programs and policy and curriculum designers. Key issues identified by this research include the following: that a replacement of the formal schooling education by the AIKS is not an answer to the current challenges facing the provision of meaningful education to all; that through consultations, and co-ordination by all stakeholders and research in AIKS and formal schooling education, either system would shed off elements perceived as barriers to EFA; and be hybridized to complement each other to enhance the achievement of EFA goals; that the formal schooling education should not be considered to be superior to informal and non-formal education systems, but that all are critical components in this quest. Theories and frameworks of hybridization of forms of knowledge/education have been considered in this research. I have argued that hybridizing AIKS with the formal schooling system will only become significant if an economic value is added to the AIKS through some mechanisms put in place. The practical skills embedded in AIKS could foster career building, entrepreneurship and apprenticeship if linked to the money economy of employment and wealth creation. I have argued that there may be need to establish opportunities for AIKS holders to be accredited within the National Qualification Framework and policy framework on AIKS be enacted to regulate and protect IK, and guide the hybridization process. The study highlights three main frameworks on the hybridization of the AIKS and the formal schooling curriculum: (1) Mainstreaming/ Incorporation/ Integration/ infusion of the AIKS into the formal school curriculum. (2) Establishing IK as a core subject with a structure similar to those of other core subjects in the curriculum. (3) Teaching AIKS as a component of the seven official Zambian languages that are taught in schools.

Vannerley, D. "The Church's one foundation : the Anglican origins and ecclesiological significance of the 1920 Lambeth 'Appeal to all Christian people'". Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2015. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/15003/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
How can the Anglican Communion resolve its problems of internal ecumenism to overcome the threat of rupture that faces it at the beginning of the twenty-first century? Anglican identity is not monolithic but pluriform within the particularity of its tradition. The Anglican way of being Christian is one that is discursive rather than definitive, aware of its roots but open to new expression of itself – and aware of the conditionality of any expression of Church in this passing world. However, from time to time, there are tensions within the tradition between those who hold differing views. In 1867, facing the challenge of maintaining Anglican unity, Archbishop Longley summoned a meeting of Anglican bishops who sought collective understanding in a discursive, dialogic fashion and which evolved into a Lambeth Conference Tradition. The bishops sought the common mind of the Church on problematic questions, always aware of the mutability of their conclusions and often willing to change their view according to changed circumstances. In this way they sought to maintain Anglican unity and the principle of comprehension whereby the tradition sought to be inclusive of diversity. The Sixth Conference in 1920 sought to address the wider question of Christian unity by employing the same methodology. The Appeal to All Christian People was intended to draw the churches into engagement with one another to overcome their differences and achieve a degree of ecclesial unity. Reconciliation of Christians with each other was set at the heart of ecumenical discourse and bore fruit in important ways. This thesis proposes that the same methodology can and should be deployed to address the disputes that exist within the Anglican Communion at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The Lambeth Conference Tradition is an essential element in Anglican heritage that Anglicans may only ignore at their peril.

Abstract (sommario):
This is a narrative study on representations of dehumanization in John Boyne’s novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The book is a fictional story situated in Auschwitz concentration camp. Bruno, the main character of the book, is an eight-year old boy, a son of the camp commandant. He befriends Shmuel, a Jewish boy living in the concentration camp on the other side of the fence. The theoretical framework for the study is dehumanization. Dehumanization is defined as perceiving someone as less than a human being. The phenomenon is studied both as a psychological process and as a necessary step in the process of genocide. Two research questions are investigated. Firstly, the study looks for answers to what kind of representations of dehumanization there are in the novel in general. Secondly, Bruno’s narrative in respect to dehumanization is studied by asking what factors there are to explain why Bruno does not dehumanize Shmuel. The study is carried out within the framework of narrative research. The analysis consists of two parts, the first one being based on the theory of dehumanization and aiming at finding the representations of the phenomenon in the story. The second part of the analysis is inductive, and it aims at deconstructing Bruno’s process of granting humanness to Shmuel. The findings of the study show that dehumanization is present in the novel both in severe and subtle forms, and there are characteristics of both animalistic and mechanistic dehumanization. Subtle forms of dehumanization usually represent mechanistic dehumanization, whereas severe forms more often link with animalistic dehumanization. The elements of genocidal dehumanization are strongly present. A few references to utilizing dehumanization for legitimizing and motivating genocide are found. The factors explaining Bruno’s way of relating to Shmuel are various. First of all, friendship is the priority for Bruno, it is more important than the ideology surrounding him. Furthermore, Bruno’s interpretations of his surroundings are tied to his own limited experience of life and lack of information, and he does not understand what is taking place in Auschwitz. This is supported by the culture of silence among the adults in the story; when Bruno asks about things, he is either told to keep silent or given insufficient answers. Shmuel also decides to keep silent about some things in the camp. Meanwhile, Bruno trusts his father as his authority, which keeps him from questioning the rightfulness of things happening in Auschwitz. Finally, Bruno finds many similarities with Shmuel, which support the idea of shared humanness. In addition to presenting the results of the study in written form, two songs have been created on the basis of the findings. The songs are reconstructions of the narratives of Shmuel and Bruno; Shmuel’s song summarizes the representations of dehumanization in the novel from a perspective of a victim, whereas Bruno’s song compiles the findings of the second research question emphasizing the role of friendship
Tutkielma on narratiivinen tutkimus dehumanisaation representaatioista John Boynen kirjassa The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (suom. Poika raidallisessa pyjamassa). Kirjan tapahtumat sijoittuvat Auschwitzin keskitysleirille. Tarina itsessään on fiktiivinen. Bruno, kirjan päähenkilö, on keskitysleirin komentajan 8-vuotias poika. Toinen tutkimuskysymys keskittyy Brunon tarinaan suhteessa dehumanisaatioon. Vastauksia etsitään siihen, miksi Bruno ei epäinhimillistä Shmuelia, ja mitä selittäviä tekijöitä tämän taustalta löytyy. Tutkimus on toteutettu narratiivisena tutkimuksena. Analyysi koostuu kahdesta osasta, joista ensimmäinen perustuu teoriaan, ja toinen on aineistolähtöinen. Teoriapohjaisen analyysin avulla etsitään vastauksia ensimmäiseen tutkimuskysymykseen dehumanisaation representaatioista yleensä. Aineistopohjaisen analyysin tarkoitus puolestaan on purkaa auki Brunon prosessi suhteessa dehumanisaatioon ja Shmueliin. Tutkimustulosten mukaan dehumanisaatio esiintyy kirjassa eriasteisina ilmiöinä lievästä vakavaan. Dehumanisaation eri muodot, eläimellistäminen (animalistic dehumanization) ja mekanistinen dehumanisaatio (mechanistic dehumanization) ovat molemmat läsnä teoksessa. Useimmiten dehumanisaation lievissä ilmentymissä on kyse mekanistisesta dehumanisaatiosta, kun taas vakavammat ilmentymät sisältävät viitteitä eläimellistämisestä. Kansanmurhaan liittyvän dehumanisaation elementit ovat kirjassa vahvoja. Viitteitä dehumanisaation hyödyntämisestä kansanmurhan oikeuttamiseen ja kansanmurhan toteuttamisen motivointiin löytyy muutamia. Brunon tapaa suhtautua Shmueliin selittävät useat seikat.

Abstract (sommario):
Background/aim: Palliative care is recommended for people with advanced non- malignant lung disease. Yet there is limited evidence regarding the integration of palliative care for people with interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis and COPD. This study aimed to explore the experience of palliative care provision for people with non-malignant respiratory disease and their bereaved carers. Methods: Qualitative study involving a convenience sample of 17 bereaved carers and 18 healthcare professionals recruited from 2 rural and 2 urban sites in the North and Republic of Ireland. Data collection consisted of 17 semi-structured interviews with carers of patients with COPD, interstitial lung disease or bronchiectasis who had died 3-18 months previously; and 4 focus groups with healthcare professionals. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Findings: Key findings included: 1) The adverse impact of geographical location on local palliative service provision, not only due to rurality but also health jurisdiction; 2) Lack of consensus amongst healthcare professionals regarding when specialist and generalist palliative care is appropriate for patients with non-malignant respiratory disease; 3) The unpredictable nature non-malignant respiratory disease caused uncertainty about illness progression amongst all participants, especially carers who experienced a lack of awareness of the life limiting nature of the disease. Conclusions: The management of patients with non-malignant respiratory disease is complex and challenging with a clear need for a more integrative model of practice, incorporating palliative care in a responsive and dynamic way. This research informed a potential model of care which may help healthcare professionals introduce palliative care,, and specialist respiratory care, early in the disease trajectory. This model also encourages the involvement of specialist palliative care for complex symptom management.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
In 2016 a new temporary asylum law was introduced in Sweden which limited the chance of being granted asylum. This law was most hard hitting on unaccompanied young people who no longer received fair asylum processes. The government changed part of the temporary law in 2018, and this amendment is referred to as the Upper Secondary School Act. The purpose of this change was to allow certain groups of unaccompanied young people the chance to gain asylum by granting them a residence permit to study in Sweden.   The purpose of this thesis is to examine whether the Upper Secondary School Act provides unaccompanied young people enough human dignity and respect. To do this, elements of two immigration laws are examined to see how the differences between the laws affects unaccompanied young people in the asylum process and in order to gain an understanding of why the new high school law was introduced into legislation. This thesis also conducts a qualitative study to find out what effects the law have had on unaccompanied young people. The Upper Secondary School Act is then reviewed from an ethical and critical standpoint, where the thesis's theoretical approach is based on the thoughts of Jürgen Habermas, Seyla Benhabib and Elena Namli.   The study shows that the Upper Secondary School Act has been criticized from many different directions, and points out that the law is inadequate and lacking a humane perspective. This study also concludes that the law has led to negative consequences for unaccompanied young people because they are not provided with the right conditions for a good life in Sweden. This has led to them being neglected. In order to change this the law must respect human dignity and express an equal respect for all people. This will then counteract repressive structures that prevent the possibility of integration, which the Upper Secondary School Act does not achieve. The main problem with the present law is that there is not enough respect for unaccompanied young peoples’ human dignity.

Abstract (sommario):
People with diabetes are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Published data on risk of all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke in type 1 diabetes separately from risk in type 2 diabetes are scarce. Such data that do exist may be derived from studies limited to a specific geographical area with a high background risk of CVD. Cohorts and sample sizes are often small with limited data for the elderly or young. This thesis presents analyses of data taken from the General Practice Research Database (GPRD). This database provides longitudinal data from primary care representative of approximately 5% of the UK population in 1992. Cohorts of patients with type 1 (n 7,713) or type 2 (n 44,230) diabetes were identified and followed from baseline to 1999. Risk of all-cause mortality MI and stroke in type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes was compared with that risk in people without diabetes. Patients with type 1 diabetes were at three to four times the risk of death or CVD than their peers without diabetes. In people with type 2 diabetes the risks were generally twice those of people without diabetes. The relative risks stratified by age and sex in type 1 and type 2 diabetes revealed risk was highest in the younger age-groups, reduced with age and that the risk associated with having diabetes was greater for women than for men. Importantly, women with type 1 or type 2 diabetes in their late 50s or early 60s had a risk of CVD that was five times greater than that of women without diabetes. There was little difference between the relative risks associated with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. These data provide an important UK baseline against which the effectiveness of policies introduced after 1999 to reduce the relative risk associated with diabetes can be evaluated.

Abstract (sommario):
Discussion of the equal use and access to public e-services for people with disability does not present a coherent picture of Information Technology (IT) policies, public e-services and disability. Current studies usually take care of one or two of these subjects together, for example use and accessibility issues of public e-services from the viewpoints of users with disability, or IT policies and guidelines regarding use and access to public e-services for all people, or limitations of technology in supporting people with disability to equally use and access public e-services. In this study, in order to explore the equality of use and access to public e-services for people with disability, I will apply a framework proposed by Orlikowski (1992). On this account, I will explore the equal use and access to public e-services from three aspects of experiences and expectations of people with disability, public e-services and disability features available on them, and IT policies in combination.

Abstract (sommario):
Is it what adult violent offenders think or how they think that discriminates them most from non-offenders? This study investigates whether violent and criminal sentiments, attributional biases and violence based grievance resolution strategies represent dynamic criminogenic risk factors. The results indicate that it is what offenders think that discriminates them more than how they think. The participants were 546 adults comprising 105 violent offenders, 238 university students and 203 men and women from a stratified random community sample. Using interview data from high-risk violent offenders, two scales were specifically developed to measure the variables of interest. The differences between offenders and non-offenders in violent attitudes was measured by expanding the scope of the Criminal Sentiments Scale. The differences in attributional biases and problem solving was assessed by a second scale developed for this study. The results showed that offenders were clearly different from non-offenders with the offenders endorsing significantly higher criminal and violent sentiments with an effect size of h2 =.46. The offenders also reported a significantly higher level of violence-based resolution strategies to end grievances than non-offenders. However, the surprising finding was that the adult male high-risk offenders did not demonstrate more pronounced hostile attributional biases than either adult men and women students or men and women from the community. The results imply that believing violence is acceptable and being prepared to use violence is more criminogenic than how you interpret the social behaviour of others. These findings have important implications for our understanding of why grievances escalate and the development of more effective intervention programs.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the significance of a Tiwi community's history in order to better understand the work of Aboriginal Community Police Officers (ACPO).The situation under study is a workplace on Bathurst Island in the Northern Territory. The literature on workplace education offers the proposition that an understanding of the socio-cultural and historical context of workplaces is fundamental to thinking about workplace education. It is hypothesised that ACPOs have a dual consciousness of their profession and their workplace, and this consciousness has been informed and shaped by their common history. It is argued that this history is characterised by syncretism. The process of acculturation is researched, where police officers draw on experiences with, and knowledge of, both Tiwi and murrintawi societies. An historical account of the Tiwi society is given.A literary device of vignettes is used, followed by a descriptive-analytical interpretation in which historical events and various social-cultural aspects are described, analysed and interpreted

Abstract (sommario):
Healthism is an ideology and discourse that positions the maintenance of health as a personal responsibility under individual control. It is known to negatively impact the lives of individuals, especially those judged as ‘physically unhealthy’. The aim of this exploratory mixed methods study was to investigate whether the healthism ideology and discourse extends to include mental health. This was referred to as ‘mental healthism’. This study also aimed to explore whether exposure to mental healthism framings affects: mood, self-stigma, mental healthism attitudes, or beliefs about mental health, in people who have experienced mental illness. One hundred and twenty-four participants with a history of mental illness were randomly assigned to read news media stories relating to mental health, two of which contained a mental healthism framing. They then completed an online survey containing self-report scales that measured mood, self-stigma and mental healthism attitudes, before contributing answers to open-ended questions regarding mental health. The quantitative data did not identify an effect of reading the different framings of mental health on any of the psychosocial variables. However, the qualitative responses provided evidence that mental healthism is already ingrained within understandings of mental illness. Furthermore, the qualitative data revealed that the mental healthism framings led to negative attitudes towards medication as a treatment for mental illness, suggesting that mental healthism could increase stigma around medication use. The convergent result of this mixed method study calls for additional ‘mental healthism’ research in samples of people who have not experienced mental illness. Messages about how to remain healthy through diet and exercise are ubiquitous in the news and popular media. They operate on an ideology and discourse known as ‘healthism’ which emphasises personal responsibility for individuals to manage their bodies in pursuit of good health (Crawford, 1980). Healthism beliefs are associated with negative psychosocial outcomes, particularly for groups of people who do not meet society’s standards of ‘healthy’. These include stigma, anxiety and discrimination (Crawford, 1994, 2004; Powroznik, 2017). In recent times, these healthism messages have been linked to mental health, with a growing focus in the media on using diet and exercise to control or prevent mental illness. In consideration of the negative effects of the healthism discourse, this study is concerned with the potential impact of ‘mental healthism’ on mood, self-stigma and attitude formation for those who have experienced mental illness.

Abstract (sommario):
Parallelisms between stories of biblical inspiration and myths that describe the origins of the human beings, their corporal transformations and the differences between diverse types of beings can be found in contemporary narrations of the Toba people (Qom) of the Argentinean Gran Chaco. Events described in the Bible are usually spun with elements of the mythical past of Toba people, therefore generating a biblical reading of the indigenous past and new readings on the human origins, of the differences between beings and of the importance of the body in the constitution of human specificity. This paper examines some of these narrations where myths and Biblical stories are interlaced giving rise to new notions of body and person.

Abstract (sommario):

This paper, the corresponding wireframe documentation including the functional prototype and flowchart document the evaluation and redesign of the beta version of the social networking platform ModernFamilies.net. In order to reveal possible usability flaws for people of different generations, in particular the elderly, a user-centered design approach including an expert review, diary studies and interviews were conducted. The findings reflected the need for consistency and feedback in general. For young children, the concept of the site appeared to behard to grasp. Experienced users found the access and management of relatives cumbersome. Most importantly, the elderly, novice computer users had a hard time getting started with the site on their own because they did not have access to a PC nor internet at their home. The latter and the fact, that some issues might never be solved by traditional usability testing because the user just feels overwhelmed by the vast amount of communication features he is faced with today calls for alternative, more intelligent, ambient interfaces. However, we came to the conclusion that although evaluation of such new technologies with elderly people is not alwayseasy, it is best to be conducted in the participants home or a similar environment.

These findings seriously question the idea that sport promotes egalitarianism. The data reveals that the legacy of apartheid still means that access to sports such as 6-down touch rugby are available only to areas with particular facilities and to those that can afford it. It is not available for all. Sport itself is not magic-wand through which people naturally find it possible to put behind them societal differences. Differences from greater society are mirrored in sport and this was evident from my data.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper aims to estimate how much Official Development Assistance (ODA) per capita and year is required to eradicate extreme poverty for all people in Nigeria by 2030 and hence achieve the first target of the first Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 1) in Nigeria. This is done with a method proposed by Kakwani and Son (2006) estimating headcount ratio, required growth rates, investment rates and ODA in order to achieve the first target of SDG 1. The paper takes into account three different growth scenarios; pro-poor, distribution neutral and anti-poor growth and comes to the conclusion that $29 200, $35 566 or $41 374 ODA per capita and year is necessary to eradicate extreme poverty in Nigeria by 2030.

Mulholland, Shipley Kirstin Elizabeth. ""I think when I work with other people I can let go of all of my ideas and tell them out loud' : the impact of a Thinking Skills approach upon pupils' experiences of maths". Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/3282.

Abstract (sommario):
This study investigates the impacts of a Thinking Skills based pedagogy upon pupils’ experiences of Maths, focusing upon three aspects: progress; self-concept; and the development of metacognition. Literature relating to Thinking Skills suggests that it can have significant impact, with the open nature of tasks and focus upon collaboration providing an alternative to more traditional, de-personalised forms of teaching. The implemented approach ensured increased opportunities for pupils to work collaboratively within mixed-attaining groups. This was combined with a shift from teacher to pupil-led talk, and the use of questions to probe thinking. Key strategies included a visual metaphor to encourage pupils to articulate problem solving strategies and pupils’ involvement in formulating learning goals. The research originates in challenges identified from my own primary classroom and was undertaken between September 2011 and July 2013. It details the shared experiences, of myself, as teacher-researcher, and my pupils - a cohort of 37 Upper Key Stage Two pupils. I have adopted an ‘action inquiry’ approach, which combines elements of action research and case-study. Research employed mixed methods, including the use of progress and attainment data; a measure of self-concept; and pupil views templates to chart development in pupils’ metacognition. This was further supplemented by two embedded case studies following individual children within the focus cohort. Results show a positive impact, but a complex one. Key findings include an increase in the proportion of pupils making better than expected progress; a positive shift in pupils’ selfconcept; and pupils’ increased focus upon discussions about learning, suggesting the development of metacognition. Overarching these conclusions has been a gradual change in my understanding of the nature of a Thinking Skills approach, becoming synonymous with my beliefs surrounding education in general. In short, Thinking Skills has become my philosophy for education.

Chana, Parminder Kaur. ""It's all just a bit of a mess when drugs are involved, it really is" : a narrative study of young people who have recently been discharged from a specialist support service for their substance use". Thesis, University of Essex, 2017. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/19339/.

Abstract (sommario):
There is a lack of narrative research in the United Kingdom (UK) that captures the stories of young people who are, or have previously been, dealing with issues surrounding their use of drugs and/or alcohol. This study, through the utilisation of a narrative approach, aims to provide a rich and detailed description of young people’s experiences, and the difficulties they’ve faced, with their use of drugs and/or alcohol. In this study I have presented the stories of three males aged seventeen to eighteen in rough verse form and then individually analysed the narratives using Engels’ narrative analysis approach. The young males have recently been discharged from a specialist support service for their use of drugs and/or alcohol which has caused concern. The specialist support service supports adolescents (aged fourteen – eighteen) with their drug and/or alcohol use. Each young male was interviewed twice, the first interview allowed the young person to tell their story in its entirety. During the second interview, each young person’s narrative was presented back to them in rough verse form and they were asked to reflect upon reading their story as well as check the anonymity of their identity in their narrative. It is hoped that the findings will help inform Educational Psychologists of some of the challenges faced by young adults who have experienced difficulties as a result of their substance use. In turn it is hoped that this may lead to better informed hypothesis generation when encountering young people who have problematic relationships with drugs and/or alcohol.

Abstract (sommario):
Throughout history, sex and sexuality has been a subject for many debates. It has been regulated through both authorities and social norms. Female sexuality has been seen both as a symbol for motherhood and as a sin. Women have also been judged both for their virginity and their lack of it. This matter appears regularly in the media, whereas women still are objectified and judged for how they choose to exert their sexuality. Therefor, we have chosen to study how this appears in teenage movies in modern times, through a case study of the movies Easy A, Juno and The first time. We want to examine which kind of messages that are transmitted to youths about women and their sexuality. We have used the variables informal sexual education, slut shaming, victim blaming, the madonna/whore complex and objectification. Our results shows that women’s sexuality still is criticized and regulated by society and its values.

Cowdell, Fiona. ""That's how we do it ... we treat them all the same" : an exploration of the experiences of patients, lay carers and health and social care staff of the care received by older people with dementia in acute hospital settings". Abstract (sommario):
'... we treat them all the same'. This study aimed to explore the experiences of patients, lay carers and health and social care staff of care received by older people with dementia in the acute hospital setting. In view of the ageing population, an increasing prevalence of dementia and the emerging dignity agenda this is a particularly topical subject. Four elements are included in this thesis: a literature review, a research study, a practice development project and an integrative review. A literature review sets person-focused research in the context of dementia research as a whole. It also identifies ways in which studies have been conducted in an ethical and meaningful manner. An ethnographic approach was used in the research study to collect data through observation, conversations and interviews. Findings portray a bleak picture of the care of this vulnerable group. Patients demonstrated, through words and actions, how difficult they found the experience. Lack of communication was an issue as was the obvious distress caused by delivery of personal care. Lay carers were relatively uncritical although this may have been due, in part, to the recruitment process. Staff generally appeared to have good intention. Most stated that they had received little or no preparation or education in dementia care. Many staff functioned almost entirely within thebed and body'framework. They frequently avoided communication with patients. Staff worked in a deeply embedded habitus, in which they appeared not to really think about what they were doing. They demonstrated a lack of empathy with patients. The concept that staff were working in a 'switched off mode and lacked empathy called for a practice development project that engaged them on both cognitive and emotional levels. A practice development project based on the philosophies of confluent education and situated learning was implemented. Initial evaluation has demonstrated some tangible changes in practice. An integrative review draws these elements together into a coherent whole. Potential contributions to the body of knowledge are acknowledged, as are limitations of the work. This study has shown that people with dementia, even those at an advanced stage and with superimposed physical illness, can be engaged in research that is both ethical and meaningful. It has shown that improvements in practice are possible. They need to be underpinned by a belief in the personhood of staff as well as patients. Areas for further research and practice development in this vital subject have been identified.

Shepherd, Jacqueline. ""Hopefully if I like get the right support at college, I'll be able to like find my way and all that if you know what I mean?" : experiences of transition from special school to mainstream college for young people with autism". Thesis, University of Sussex, 2016. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/61439/.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates the transition of young people with autism moving from a small, protected and personalised special school environment to a large, busy mainstream college of further education in England. Whilst potentially unsettling for any young person, this transition can be particularly challenging for young people with autism given a desire for predictability and difficulty in adapting to change. This longitudinal research focused on the experience of transition from the point of view of the young people and their parents, and it contributes to the somewhat limited research on post-16 transitions for young people with autism and learning difficulties. Six young people were at the heart of my research but their parents, teachers, lecturers and careers advisers were also interviewed. A key aim of the research was to develop methods to engage and support the young people in an interview process, without influencing their responses too much or restricting their contributions. With this in mind, ‘interrupted interviews' were developed that involved both the use of collage and card sort applications on a tablet, and walking interviews around the college environment. These methods helped to personalise the interview process, to hear the individual student voices and to facilitate communication about the concerns and experiences of the participants. The research findings demonstrate that young people with autism have aspirations, interests and concerns as they progress towards adulthood; that they both seek and enjoy social interaction and that young people and parents need support during and after transition. The tensions between independence and vulnerability are explored as well as the notion of interdependence. While some of the young people in this research made reasonably smooth transitions to college, there were difficulties and challenges, and these lay almost entirely within the area of social interaction. In order for young people with autism and learning difficulties to progress both academically and socially, there needs to be a greater understanding of autism within the whole college community and proper attention given to personalising the transition process to ensure that these young learners can realise their capabilities.

Webb, Lucy. "Will evidence-based practice help the practitioner meet the needs of all the patients in the waiting room? : an examination of the applicability of evidence-based practice and its effect on service provision and access for people with problem substance use". Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.506705.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This critical reading aims to evaluate the extent to which evidence-based practice meets the intervention and care provision needs of minority patient groups. Among problem drug and alcohol users, certain sub-populations such as ethnic minorities, women, extreme age groups and those with complex problems present particular challenges for identification of needs and appropriate service provision. People from ethnic minorities are under-represented among substance use treatment populations, and young males are identified as presenting high suicide risk and either experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, social exclusion and criminality, but at the same time have greater difficulties accessing treatment pathways. There is also an increasing clinical concern about young, aged and female substance misusers, and recognition that there is limited knowledge about their particular service access and intervention needs. Current practices and policies for substance misuse services, however, may often be based on medically dominated evidence established from the majority patient population, leading to provision targeted at the needs of, often, white, middle-aged men who have the easiest access to services. The methodological approach of this thesis is a critical reading of existing research underpinning current evidence-based practice, with an analysis of how, and in what ways, quantitative methodological approaches favoured in medicine fail to recognise and accommodate the needs and presentations of minority sub-groups. In this way, the analysis focuses on the manifest and latent limitations of each quantitative approach, identifying and exploring evidence regarding sub-populations for whom the findings, and therefore the evidence-based practice, may not apply. The investigator's own studies will be included in the critical reading and alternative methodologies will also be examined. It is argued that, in addition to acute and chronic illness, lifestyle health problems such as substance misuse represent a third category of health concern by being subject to contextual influence and behaviour change. It is therefore less suited to a disease model approach to evidence for practice and demands evidence based on behavioural and psychological change processes rather than treatment outcomes.
