Abstract (sommario):
Algeria's post-independence quest for cultural revitalization and architectural identity led to the creation of the Islamic University Mosque of Emir Abdelkader in Constantine. This mosque, a symbol of contemporary architectural heritage, heavily influenced modern mosque designs in the city. This research thoroughly examines this architectural influence through architectural analysis techniques, including on-site evaluations, comparisons, and scrutiny of manuscripts and blueprints. The analysis reveals a significant correlation between the architectural elements of the Islamic University Mosque (such as azure tiles, square-based minarets, and ribbed domes) and the designs of three modern mosques in Constantine: Ibn Al-Arabi, El-Haddad, and Al-Wihda. It demonstrates how these elements seamlessly integrated into the design of these contemporary mosques, emphasizing the profound impact of the Islamic University Mosque on modern religious architecture in Constantine. Through these architectural resemblances, this research underscores the pivotal role played by the Islamic University Mosque of Emir Abdelkader in shaping the contemporary religious architectural landscape of Constantine. The findings contribute to our understanding of the mosque's cultural and architectural significance within the broader context of Algerian heritage. Furthermore, this study not only highlights the influence of the Islamic University Mosque but also provides deep insights into the evolving architectural expressions of religious identity in Algeria. It enriches the fields of architectural history and cultural studies by emphasizing the cultural and historical importance of this architectural masterpiece.

IDRISSI AZAMI, Rim, Hamza TOUZANI e Abdelkader SABIL. "Gender Dynamics, Space, and Identity Formation in Yasmina Khadra’s What the Day Owes the Night (2008, 2011)". Integrated Journal for Research in Arts and Humanities 3, n. 2 (2 marzo 2023): 1–7. http://dx.doi.org/10.55544/ijrah.3.2.1.

Abstract (sommario):
Yasmina Khadra’s’ ‘Ce Que le Jour Doit à la Nuit’ (What the Day Owes the Night) is an Algerian best-selling novel originally written in French. Yasmina Khadra is the non de plume of the Algerian army officer, Mohammed Moulesshoul. Moulesshoul utilised a female pseudonym to avoid the inspections of his manuscripts by the army. The version I use in this article is a translation from French by Frank Wynne (2011). Yasmina Khadra discusses the human existence in a way that seeks to determine the purpose of all life beyond one’s social condition. In other words, Yasmina Khadra perceives life as a continuum of interpersonal and intrapersonal relations that possess a strong effect on the social subjects’ existence in the world. Also, being an Algerian drives Yasmina Khadra to concentrate on issues of identity, colonialism, the production, and circulation of particular social and cultural knowledge, along with the struggle of gender and political identification. Yasmina Khadra’s narrative is a manifestation of the struggle to produce a historic national culture and a narrative discourse free of the shackles of colonialist knowledge and mode of thought. This article uses CDA and thematic analysis to critically outline and investigate the gender dynamics and identity formation that characterise Khadra’s narrative discourse.

Abstract (sommario):
In his work, some modern Muslim literature shows a relationship between Arabic literature and Islam. This is shown in some of the literary works of Muslim writers who made Islam a Worldview and thought in his writing. Abu Bakar Siradjuddin, for example, who persistently spread Islam in Europe through his Literary Works and received a good response was even followed by several other poets. In contrast to Siradjuddin, Ahmad Al Alawi, an Algerian poet, also spread Islam through his 1955 manuscripts and literary books. This shows that the existence of Arabic and Islamic literature is still sustainable. Although on the other hand, there are new cultures, but this does not change the pattern of Muslim Literature. This article uses a description analysis method to describe the study of the Integration of Arabic and Islamic literature as an object of art and life revealed from the soul with full faith in Islam. So the resulting Texts also hold on to the view of Islamic life. (Islamic Worldview)

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This article discusses The Met’s unpublished Dalāʾil al-khayrāt—2017.301—(MS New York, TMMA 2017.301), together with a group of comparable manuscripts. The earliest known dated manuscript within the corpus, it introduces several iconographic elements that are new to the Dalāʾil, and which compare with the traditions developing in the Mashriq and the Ottoman world in particular. The article discusses Dalāʾil production in seventeenth-century North Africa and its development in the Ottoman provinces, Tunisia, and/or Algeria. The manuscripts illustrate how an Ottoman visual apparatus—among which the theme of the holy sanctuaries at Mecca and Medina, appearing for the first time in MS New York, TMMA 2017.301—is established for Muhammadan devotion in Maghribī Dalāʾils. The manuscripts belong to the broader historic, social, and artistic contexts of Ottoman North Africa. Our analysis captures the complex dynamics of Ottomanization of the North African provinces of the Ottoman Empire, remaining strongly rooted in their local traditions, while engaging with Ottoman visual idioms.

Abstract (sommario):
The Hassani dialect is the dialect spoken in southern Algeria, it spreads - in addition to the city of Tindouf - in Sakia El Hamra and the Gold Valley in Mauritania, southern Morocco and northern Mali. It resulted from the mixing of the languages of the Arabs coming from the East with the Berber languages from Sanhaja on the one hand, and the African Negro elements on the other hand. The Hassani dialect is distinguished by its interesting singing in various oral expressive styles. In a desert society in which writing and its means are reduced, oral expressions have become the only means of communication that convey experiences and preserve collective memory. The Hassani dialect includes a rich poetic heritage, which is characterized by its various meters and circles that cover all aspects of expression. It also includes a large number of proverbs and wisdom that are distinguished by their connection to man and the earth. In this study, we will deal with this diversity and what distinguishes it, through a reading in the Diwan manuscript of Hassan weld laerab in the Hassani dialect. He is one of the scholars of the city of Tindouf and its notables, who composed a huge collection in the Hassani dialect that is considered a reference to the social, cultural, and political life that prevailed in the city of Tindouf in the nineteenth century. This study comes as a new addition, as it aims to unveil the status of the Hassani dialect in southern Algeria, as it will contribute to preserving the Algerian identity. And in the formation of the Algerian personality, which is characterized by dialectical and cultural diversity.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This article focuses on letters in private Ibadi libraries and their importance for understanding the primary means of communication among Ibadi communities in the premodern Maghrib. Using the example of a letter from the 7th/13th-century Ibadi Shaykh Abū ʿAbdallāh al-Ṣidghiyānī from the island of Djerba (Tunisia) to the Ibadis of Warjalān (Algeria), it seeks to highlight the importance of the archive of unedited Ibadi manuscript letters. This corpus of correspondences has not received the care and maintenance it merits because these letters do not belong to a recognized volume or book and are today located in private libraries unavailable to the public. The article also uses the example of al-Ṣidghiyānī’s letter to emphasize the importance of the manuscript letters and their role in maintaining intellectual ties among the Ibadi cities of the Maghrib. This brief article consists of two parts. The first part offers a general presentation of the archive where the letter is today held: the El Barounia Library in Djerba, Tunisia. The second part presents the manuscript and its author in their historical context.

Abstract (sommario):
When travelling in and around Biskra, Algeria, in 1913, Béla Bartók recorded almost two hundred melodies on phonograph cylinders. Bartók’s unique research was the subject of my PhD dissertation at the Sorbonne in Paris in 2003. The dissertation was based on about half of Bartók’s Arab collection available at the time at the Budapest Bartók Archives. In the meantime in 2006, the CD-ROM Bartók and Arab Folk Music has made for the first time available all the surviving transcriptions and sound recordings, which represent Bartók’s collection almost in its entirety. The article summarizes new research into the source material which has recently become available and points out the special significance of his study of Arab folk music for ethnomusicological research into the Maghreb.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The aim of this article is to examine the narrative elements of the manuscript commentary, in Castilian and Latin script, on the work of one of the few Morisco poets in exile whose name is known to us. Ibrahim de Bolfad, who was living in Algiers at the time, was the author of quintils on the foundations of Islam, the life of the Prophet, the divine attributes, and the major tenets of Islamic theology. Preserved in the National Library of Spain (BNE : 9653), the manuscript in which the commentary on his poetry was written is thought to be the work of a Morisco exiled in Tunis. This study explores the narrative dimension of the two texts, in order to highlight the construction of a metanarrative around Morisco identity in North African exile. As part of this research, we are particularly interested in the way in which this narrative activity was conducted in Castilian in seventeenth-century Algeria. Finally, we propose a French translation of the 114 quintils, collected here as a single text.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract From the 15th century onwards, a network of Muslim scholarly communities developed in the western and central parts of the Sahara, covering present‐day southern Algeria, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, and Niger. The massive diffusion of Islamic literate culture led to the constitution of a rich tradition of scholarship that materialized in various types of texts: doctrinal treatises, biographical dictionaries, chronicles, commentaries, poetry, and, most important, comprehensive fatwa collections. In the last decades, increasing academic attention has been given to this astonishing cultural heritage of the people of the great desert. This article intends to give a short survey of works and research orientations, focusing on projects of identification and edition of Arabic manuscripts and on the mobilization of Muslim scholarly writing as a source for social and cultural history.

Abstract (sommario):
Manuscript type: Research paper Research aims: Consumer-based brand equity (CBBE) and purchase intention are two significant concepts in marketing research that have recently received notable attention from scholars and managers alike. Still, few studies have been conducted in Algeria with a specific focus on the home appliance category. This paper aims to explore the linkages between dimensions of CBBE dimensions (i.e., brand awareness/associations, perceived quality, and brand loyalty) and brand preference and the role of brand preference in shaping purchase intention in the context of home appliance brands in Algeria. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study conducted a quantitative research approach after collecting data from 294 householders. The PLS- SEM statistical approach is used to test the developed hypotheses. Research findings: The findings reveal that CBBE dimensions positively and significantly influence brand preference. Furthermore, brand preference positively influences purchase intention. Theoretical contribution: The study contributes to the understanding of brand dynamics and consumer behaviour in specific market settings of home appliances. Practitioner/Policy implications: The findings offer insights to brand managers and marketers of home appliances in different cultures, empowering them to develop an effective competitive positioning that crafts customer positive responses and drives sales growth. Research limitation/Implication: Rather than including only preferences and intentions, other behavioural and market outcomes may overlook the potential effect of CBBE such as defending negative information and market share; the study was conducted using qualitative and cross- sectional methods, qualitative methods would provide more insights into CBBE and attribute-based preferences.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In 1996, Hādī Ḥasan Ḥammūdī published an edition of a medical dictionary based on two manuscripts he had found in a private collection in Oran, Algeria. The dictionary was allegedly written by ʾAbū Muḥammad ʿAbdallāh b. Muḥammad al-ʾAzdī, known under the name Ibn al-Dhahabī (d. 456/1064). The transcription shows hamzat al-qaṭʿ but not hamzat al-waṣl, therefore: ʾabū but ibn. The author of the dictionary acquired his knowledge in several regions of the Islamic world and allegedly studied with such famous scholars as al-Bīrūnī (d. 440/1048) and Ibn Sīnā (d. 428/1037). Complaining that his contemporaries frequently used non-Arabic terms, he decided to compile a dictionary, arranging the terms in alphabetical order by their roots, and explaining their medical as well as their linguistic aspects. He entitled his dictionary the Book of Water (Kitāb al-māʾ), after its first entry, on water (al-māʾ). This paper investigates the text with regard to its author, content, principles of organisation, authorities, and intertextuality, with the aim of verifying the authorship of Ibn al-Dhahabī and of better understanding the literary environment and the reading culture of the fifth century.

Abstract (sommario):
Members of the Lamiaceae family are considered chief sources of bioactive therapeutic agents. They are important ornamental, medicinal, and aromatic plants, many of which are used in traditional and modern medicine and in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. In North Africa, on the Mediterranean side, there is the following particularly interesting Lamiaceous species: Thymus hirtus Willd. sp. Algeriensis Boiss. Et Reut. The populations of this endemic plant are distributed from the subhumid to the lower arid zone and are mainly employed as ethnomedicinal remedies in the following Maghreb countries: Algeria, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia. In fact, they have been applied as antimicrobial agents, antispasmodics, astringents, expectorants, and preservatives for several food products. The species is commonly consumed as a tea or infusion and is used against hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, respiratory ailments, heart disease, and food poisoning. These medicinal uses are related to constituents with many biological characteristics, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-ulcer, anti-diabetic, insecticidal, and anti-inflammatory activities. This review aims to present an overview of the botanical characteristics and geographical distribution of Thymus algeriensis Boiss. Et Reut and its traditional uses. This manuscript also examines the phytochemical profile and its correlation with biological activities revealed by in vitro and in vivo studies.
