Abstract (sommario):
Before the war there were private and "old field" public elementary schools, and also private, individual- and church-supported high-schools called academies, seminaries, or institutes. Some even used the word college. Geology and mineralogy were taught in some of the academies, depending upon the availability of teachers; most had the typical classical education of the day. There were four colleges: Franklin [the University of Georgia], Mercer [Baptist], Oglethorpe [Presbyterian], and Emory [Methodist]. All had geology in the curriculum, either as a distinct one-semester course [combining the present-day physical and historical geology] or as part of a course in natural history. None was a center of great scientific strength, although both Franklin and Oglethorpe had the services of Joseph LeConte for a short while. Brief biographies of John R. Cotting, James Jackson, Joseph Jones, William L. Jones, Joseph LeConte, Alexander Means, Josiah Meigs, George W. W. Stone, Joseph Willett, and James Woodward are included.

AbstractThe continuous substantial and flexible material support of the bankers Joseph and Alexander Mendelssohn were of essential importance for Alexander von Humboldt's outstanding scientific expeditions and his work as a publicist, coordinator and supporter of fellow scientist and scientific projects in Berlin for decades. New sources present this support of Humboldt by the Mendelssohns in all its depth and variety. At the same time, the enduring funding of one of Prussia's most important Bildungsbürger clearly illustrates that the business policy of the Mendelssohn bankers was based on a canon of values in which the acceptance of responsibility in different fields of society were of equal importance as pure economic success.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract:Alexander Scott’s narrative of his captivity in the Sahara in the early nineteenth century presents a curious example of how information of foreign lands was received and legitimized in Britain. Through the input of individuals such as Joseph Banks and James Rennell, Scott’s tale was presented as an authoritative account of the inaccessible West African interior. This article pursues this process of authentication and demonstrates how elements of the editors” preconceived notion of the region colored the subsequent text and associated cartography.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractJoseph Toynbee (1815–1866) is considered one of the fathers of modern otology. He spent his whole life in London, studying and describing the anatomy and pathology of the main diseases of the ear. This paper presents some of the motivations behind Toynbee's decision to specialise in otology, by examining several of his letters published under the signature ‘J. T.’ in The Lancet between 1838 and 1839. Frustrated by the weakened state of aural surgery in Britain, and by the popularity of several ‘quacks aurists’ (including John Harrison Curtis, William Wright and Alexander Turnbull), Toynbee insisted that the study of the ear needed to distance itself from quackery and rebuild itself upon a scientific foundation. This paper evaluates several exchanges between Toynbee and Curtis, Wright and Turnbull.

Abstract (sommario):
Joseph de Maistre, who found himself in the diplomatic service in Russia after the events of the French Revolution, used the high-society salons of St. Petersburg to established connections at court, and corresponded with the key figures of the time. The Savoy envoy earned a reputation of an advocate of Catholicism, and numerous conversions in the highest circles of the Russian society are attributed to his influence. His correspondence with Roxana Sturdza differs, however, from the messages addressed to other members of the Russian aristocracy of that time, and deserves separate consideration due to the variety of communication strategies of the Savoyard diplomat. Letters to Roxana cover almost the entire period of Joseph de Maistre’s stay in Russia, with the first one dating back to 1805 and the last one referring to 1817; apart from the personal relations of the correspondents, the letters let us trace the impact that the historical events of Alexander I’s reign made on the patterns of communication between the diplomat and the Emperor’s lady-in-waiting.

Abstract (sommario):
The worldwide exchange of fruits has been facilitated by traders, travelers, sovereigns, conquerors, diplomats, missionaries, and botanists. The beginnings of organized plant exploration date to the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt, who, as early as 2000 bce, brought back exotic trees and plants in their foreign campaigns and illustrated them on their temple walls. Queen Hatshepsut (ca. 1500 bce) sent out ships to bring back trees from the land of Punt (northeast African coast). The exchange of plants throughout antiquity was a by-product of trade routes between East and West as well as though the campaigns of conquerors including Alexander, the warriors of Islam, Genghis Khan, and the crusades. The age of exploration starting at the end of the 15th century was inspired by the search for a sea route to the spice-rich East. The encounter of Columbus with the Americas brought about an explosive exchange of New World and Old World plants. The rise of science in the 17th and 18th centuries was associated with botanical exploration involving travels and expeditions, including Hans Sloan to the West Indies, James Cunningham to China, Georg Eberhard Rumpf (Rumphius) to the Moluccas, and Sir Joseph Banks to Newfoundland, Labrador, South America Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, the Malay Archipelago, Hebrides, and Iceland.

Abstract (sommario):

AbstractContra Richard Bauckham's thesis that the Gospels of Mark, Luke and John were based upon original eyewitness testimony—in the case of Luke, the preface declaration; in the case of Mark, Peter's testimony; in the case of John, the testimony of Papias' John the Elder—I submit here evidence to the contrary, focusing my response on Luke and Mark With respect to Luke, I propose, drawing upon the works of Loveday Alexander and Joseph Tyson, that the Lukan preface is a second-century anti-Marcionite appendage to ‘original’ Luke. In the case of Mark, apart from any Petrine testimony, I argue that Mark created the passion narrative in large part from Davidic-saga and Josephan hypotexts.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyses the concept of “Alexandria column” in Pushkin’s Monument as a symbol of Russian imperial statehood and ideology edifice (“Alexandria” of Alexander I – by analogy with the pseudo-historical “Alexandria” of Alexander the Great) in opposition to the “non-handmade monument” created by Pushkin, which in light of religious philosophy of Russian Masonry and in correlation with Mk. 14:58 and 2Cor. 5:1 could be considered as a poetic temple of Freedom – “Alexandria” of Alexander Pushkin. In parallel to this, the article interprets the ideological and philosophical peculiarities of Pushkin’s interpretation of Peter the Great’s mission as the founder of the Russian Empire and St. Petersburg as the Fourth Rome, reflected in “The Bronze Horseman”. Particular attention is paid to the identification of certain aspects of the semantic field of Pushkin’s concept of “non-handmade” (hapax legomenon of the poet’s language) in comparison with its meanings in the sources, from which the term can be borrowed. The author also analyses Pushkin’s concept of freedom in correlation with the corresponding Russian Masonic views on freedom and the spiritual temple of freedom – world/universal and inner/individual. The author also considers the peculiarities of evolution of Pushkin’s idea of the inspiration of God in his works, first of all, in the comparison of his poems “The Prophet” and “The Monument”. The author concludes that Pushkin’s notion of true freedom, in correlation with his belief in the divine inspiration, is close to the corresponding concept of Joseph de Maistre, whose works were well known to the poet.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This article is devoted to studying the role of renovationist Metropolitan Joseph Krechetovich in the history of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Simferopol, which was destroyed in 1930. Based on the materials of the local periodical press (1928–1930), the documents of the State Archive of the Republic of Crimea and the FSB Archive for the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, the author provides the information about the cathedral clergy staff at the time of the appointment of the aforementioned bishop to the Crimean Cathedra. He also gives a brief description of the difficult Metropolitan's relationship with the cathedral religious community. There is the stable opinion about the greed of Metropolitan Joseph Krechetovich and the exorbitant expenses of the cathedral religious community associated with the maintenance of his large family. The author attempts to refute it and shows the nature of the organizational and financial difficulties experienced by the community within the last two years of its existence, which ultimately led to the closure of the cathedral in 1929. He also describes the anti-religious campaign that was launched against the renovationist hierarch and the cathedral community at the beginning of the first five-year plan of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), provides information about the subsequent fate of the building and the clergy of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (Simferopol).

In this article we have reviewed the potential role of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in the pathogenesis and treatment of a number of less common age-related disorders, for many of which effective therapies are not currently available. For most of these disorders, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation have been implicated in the disease process, providing a rationale for the potential therapeutic use of CoQ10, because of its key roles in mitochondrial function, as an antioxidant, and as an anti-inflammatory agent. Disorders reviewed in the article include multi system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy, sporadic adult onset ataxia, and pulmonary fibrosis, together with late onset versions of Huntington’s disease, Alexander disease, lupus, anti-phospholipid syndrome, lysosomal storage disorders, fibromyalgia, Machado-Joseph disease, acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency, and Leber’s optic neuropathy.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
James Sowerby included meteorites in his publications of British and exotic natural history and so raised interest in their nature and origins at a time of much debate and involving the President of the Royal Society, Sir Joseph Banks. The celebrations over the defeat of France in 1814 prompted Sowerby to make a sword from the Cape of Good Hope iron meteorite to present to the Russian Emperor, Alexander I, at the time of his state visit to London in June 1814 and in recognition of his achievements in bringing peace to Europe. The story of its attempted presentation, its final reception and the following response, including publications, all helped to increase interest in meteorites and their properties. The rediscovery of the sword after a lengthy disappearance probably brings an unusual saga to a fitting close.

This article is devoted to the heads of state who at some point in their lives were engaged in advocacy. Among the lawyers who ruled states in the 19th century: Abraham Lincoln, Prudente Jose de MoraisBarrus, Miguel Angel Juarez Selman, John Alexander MacDonald. In the XX century: Kerensky Alexander Fedorovich, Mohandas Gandhi, Raymond Nicolas Landry Poincaré, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, Robert Gordon Menzies, Muhammad Ali Jin- nah, Fidel Castro, Joseph Philippe Pierre Yves Elliott Trudeau, Lee Kuan Yew, Margaret Thatcher, Nelson Mandela, Gerch Kurt Schroeder. The study of the biographies of the heads of state in the context of their legal profession allows us to consider the paths leading to power from a special angle. A long-standing and traditional career scheme for the United States of America: «lawyer — senator — president» exists not only there, it has become standard for many countries of the modern world, not only which are the standard of democracy and freedom, but also others that are still striving to become such. The conducted research popularizes the legal profession, destroying the dogma prevailing in society about lawyers, the legal profession and its appointment. The purpose of the article is, within the framework of the aspect of the development of democracy in diff erent states, to tell about people who have left their mark on history and to declare that their profession is a lawyer.

Abstract (sommario):
The article aims to present the most important theses contained in the book of an outstanding Russian postcolonial researcher Alexander Etkind. At the heart of his deliberations lies the assumption that the Russian empire not only dominated foreign territories, but also native territories located in the central governorates of the state. The process was accompanied by colonization of the local population, above all — peasants. Etkind considers the Russian serfdom law and rural community as typical colonial institutions. His interests remain in some writers’ attempts to explain the phenomenon of internal colonization. A combination of methods used in historical and literary research results in an interesting interpretation of texts written by Daniel Defoe, Leo Tolstoy, Nikolai Gogol, Joseph Conrad, Immanuel Kant and Mikhail Bakhtin, reflecting their authors’ imperial experience. In the article, I focus on the issues included in the introduction and the first two parts of the book.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Joseph Townsend’s Dissertation on the Poor Laws (1786) advances the thesis that aid to the poor generates more poverty. It is a work that twists and traduces a number of bibliographic sources in order to produce its famous theorem about goats and dogs, an idea that would have tremendous influence on public policy on overpopulation. The sources of Townsend's Dissertation are based on the figure of Alexander Selkirk, who lived as a castaway on an island of the Juan Fernández Archipelago. This essay analyzes Townsend's sources and takes note of the spread of his proposals, the Robinsonades, and their validation by ostensibly scientific discourses which have asserted their truth value over and above that of literary fictions. In closing, it demonstrates Townsend's own grounding in fiction, and considers the role the shaping power of literature might play in the reimagination of a world out of joint.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The article is based on the materials from Russian and Austrian archives and devoted to lesser-known circumstances of the preparation and course of the 1761 diplomatic mission of Baron A.S. Stroganov to Vienna on the occasion of the wedding of the heir to the throne, Archduke Joseph, with Isabella of Parma. The embassy is considered in the context of symbolic communication through ceremonial gestures between St. Petersburg and Vienna. It emphasised the particularly friendly nature of the relationship between the two dynasties and two courts, not only united by a bilateral treaty and membership in the anti-Prussian alliance during the Seven Years War but also symbolically related as godparents. A.S. Stroganov was a young aristocrat without proper experience in the field of diplomacy and of the modest court rank of Kammer-Junker. The appointment was explained by his kinship with Chancellor M.I. Vorontsov whose daughter Anna officially accompanied her husband on the trip. The imperial ambassador to St. Petersburg Count Nicolaus Esterházy spared no effort to smooth over the awkwardness and find benevolent patrons for the young couple in Vienna. European education and the exceptional personal qualities of the ambassador allowed A. Stroganov to fulfil the commission with honour and receive the title of a Count of the Holy Roman Empire from Emperor Francis I as a reward. The embassy became the last page in the history of relations between St. Petersburg and Vienna on the eve of the break of bilateral relations and Russia’s withdrawal from the Seven Years War in 1762.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In one of his essays written shortly after the war, Gustaw Herling pointed out that what mattered to him in his approach to novels was not the used method of writing, but a specific representation of a human being in “moral and psychological becoming.” The patron of the idea of such a representation and the tendencies associated with it was Joseph Conrad, the author occupying an exceptional place in Herling's writings on literature. This article discusses a wide range of issues relating to the fictional character and its creation, a vast subject of Herling's essays and critical writings. Close attention is paid to his perception of Conrad's protagonists and to his use of them as a measure of literary works by other authors, especially moralist writers: Graham Greene, Albert Camus, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Franz Kafka, and Alexander Solzhenitsyn. The article also discusses other themes and strategies of Herling's criticism, emphasizing its multilateral and far-reaching nature. It shows how Herling—moving from the literary character to the author—crossed the boundaries of literature and connected its fictional realm with the real world. As a critic and writer living and working in exile, Herling not only dealt with literature as an art form, but also debated the problems of postwar history and politics, communism, human freedom, and the moral attitudes and responsibilities of writers.

Abstract (sommario):
Before Joseph Lister's landmark Lancet publications on the use of carbolic acid wound dressings in 1867, surgeons Jules Lemaire in France and Enrico Bottini in Italy had already used carbolic acid on hundreds of patients to control suppurative wounds. After Friedlieb Runge isolated it from coal tar in 1834, a number of scientists recognized the efficacy of carbolic acid in preventing decay and neutralizing the stench of dead animals and human cadavers. Frederick Calvert, Alexander McDougall, and Angus Smith in Manchester promoted a powdered form of carbolic acid as a deodorizing agent to treat municipal sewage across the United Kingdom, most notably during London's famous “Great Stink” of 1858. Edmond Corne in France introduced his formulation, which Alfred-Armand-Louis-Marie Velpeau, Ferdinand LeBeuf, and Lemaire adapted for clinical use in 1859. Lemaire wrote extensively on carbolic acid and its surgical application in three publications from 1860 to 1862. In 1866, Bottini published his experience of 600 cases where it was used. In 1865, Lister began to use carbolic acid in open fractures after Thomas Anderson, his colleague in agricultural chemistry at the University of Glasgow, told him about its use in Carlisle sewage works. This article traces the rich history of carbolic acid from an unknown compound in coal to the cornerstone of Listerism in late-19th–century operating rooms.

Abstract (sommario):
Among the families that have influenced the development of modern medicine into what it is today, the Monro lineage stands as one of the most notable. Alexander Monro primus (1697–1767) was the first of 3 generations with the same name, a dynasty that spanned 126 years occupying the Chair of Anatomy one after the other at the University of Edinburgh. After becoming Professor of Anatomy at the University of Edinburgh in 1719, Monro primus played a principal role in the establishment of the University of Edinburgh School of Medicine and the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. In 1726, he published The Anatomy of the Humane Bones, of which 8 editions were printed during his lifetime. His son, Alexander Monro secundus (1733–1817), arguably the most notable of the 3 men, succeeded him as Professor of Anatomy. A highly regarded lecturer and anatomist, Monro secundus studied under many great physicians, including William Hunter and Johann Friedrich Meckel the Elder, and was also teacher to other well-known figures at the time, such as Joseph Black and Thomas Trotter. His most notable contributions include his work with the lymphatic system, the interventricular foramen (of Monro), and the Monro-Kellie doctrine. Alexander Monro tertius (1773–1859), the last of the dynasty, also succeeded his father as Professor of Anatomy. His work included insights into abdominal aortic aneurysms and the anatomy of the genitourinary system. The prominent association of the Monro family with the University of Edinburgh and the effects of a tenured professorship under the concept of “Ad vitam aut culpam” over successive generations are also described. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this historical review of the Monro family is among the few published in neurosurgical literature. A vivid historical overview of the medical contributions of the most famous and influential dynasty of physicians in Edinburgh at that time is provided, with relevant excerpts from original publications.

Abstract (sommario):
The Reverend William Bell had six children who survived infancy. Two of his sons entered the legal profession and two other sons became distinguished anatomists and surgeons — John Bell, said for 20 years to have been the leading operating surgeon in Britain and throughout the world -and Sir Charles Bell, possibly the most distinguished anatomist and physiologist of his day. Information is not known about the fifth son or their sister. Charles Shaw, a lawyer of Ayr, had four sons and two daughters who survived infancy. Two of his sons, John and Alexander, became anatomists and later surgeons at the Middlesex Hospital, and both worked closely with Charles Bell at the Great Windmill Street School of Anatomy. His third son entered the law and his fourth son became a distinguished soldier. The two daughters of Charles Shaw married into the Bell family: Barbara married George Joseph Bell and Marion married Mr (later Sir) Charles Bell.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the evacuation of Crimean museum collections in October, 1941. The fate of the lost pre-war collection of the Simferopol Art Gallery, which did not have time to leave the Crimea and was destroyed by fire in Kerch port, is well known. At the same time, a temporary exhibition made up of the works of the Simferopol Gallery was evacuated from Feodosiya Art Gallery along with the masterpieces of the great marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky. Prominent museum figures Nikolay S.Barsamov and Jan P.Birzgal managed to send the exhibits to Novorossiysk, then to Krasnodar. Contrary to the plans of the Committee for the Arts to take these exhibits to Stalingrad, both Crimean galleries were sent to Yerevan. At the end of 1941, Birzgal compiled a list of 50 salvaged exhibits of the Simferopol Art Gallery. Soviet art of the 1920s–1930s is represented by the works of Igor E.Grabar, Mitrofan B.Grekov, Vladimir A.Eyfert, Peter P.Konchalovsky. The Russian landscape is represented by Vasiliy V.Baksheev, Pavel A.Radimov, Vasiliy V.Rozhdestvensky. From creative trips to Central Asia, Altai and Pamir, new works are brought by Peter I.Kotov and Peter N.Staronosov, Nikolay G.Kotov, Peter D.Pokarzhevsky, Sergei I.Pichugin. The work of Barsamov, the author of the portrait of the artist Bogaevsky (1940), is connected with Crimea. Among the rescued works are the works of Konstantin F.Bogaevsky himself, several of his industrial landscapes, and sketches for the panel Crimea (1921); Bakhchisarai landscapes by Alexander V.Kuprin, Sudak view by Alexander F.Gaush. In the postwar period, the museum workers established the affiliation of works by Ilya E.Repin, Joseph I.Oleshkevich, and Henri-Francois Riesener to the pre-war collection.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The article aims to assess a change in the EU’s soft power in the Western Balkan and Eastern Partnership states in the light of the crises the bloc has undergone in recent years. Generally agreeing with the common argument that the EU’s attractiveness for those countries has decreased, the author challenges the popular wisdom that such a decrease is likely to reverse those states’ pro-EU foreign policy orientations. To prove it, the author applies Joseph Nye’s and Alexander Vuving’s “power currencies” approach to operationalize soft power, considering the bloc’s attraction as a combination of “brilliance” (the actor’s relationship with its work), “benignity” (the actor’s relationship with other actors) and “beauty” (the actor’s relationship with values and ideas). Elaborating on the crises’ influence on each of these currencies, the author shows that their lessening, first, has mainly taken place in absolute rather than relative terms, so the EU’s attractiveness remains strong compared to that of its competitors, and second, it has primarily affected the bloc’s soft power potential rather than its actual behavior towards the target countries.

Adaptation of the line, “The woman that deliberates is lost.” JOSEPH ADDISON, CATO: A TRAGEDY, AND SELECTED ESSAYS 30 (2004). See also OLIVER WENDALL HOLMES, SR., THE AUTOCRAT AT THE BREAKFAST TABLE 29 (1858) (“The woman who ‘calculates’ is lost.”). American legal realism numbers among the most important theoretical contributions of legal academia to date. Given the movement’s influence, as well as the common centrality of certain key figures, it is surprising that privacy scholarship in the United States has paid next to no attention to the movement. This inattention is unfortunate for several reasons, including that privacy law furnishes rich examples of the indeterminacy thesis — a key concept of American legal realism — and because the interdisciplinary efforts of privacy scholars to explore extra-legal influences on privacy law arguably further the plot of legal realism itself.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
William Barton Rogers, conceptual founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, pursued two interrelated careers in nineteenth-century America: one centered on his activities in science and the other on his higher educational reform efforts. His scientific peers knew him as a geologist and natural philosopher, director of the first geological survey of Virginia, author of over one hundred publications in science, and promoter of professionalization. His colleagues in higher education, meanwhile, thought of him as the reform-minded professor at the College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia, who later left the South and established one of America's first technological institutes. Comparatively little has been written about either of these areas of Rogers's life and career. We know much more about the scientific and educational thought of such figures as Louis Agassiz at Harvard, Benjamin Silliman at Yale, Joseph Henry at Princeton, and Alexander Dallas Bache at the helm of the Coast Survey. The literature on Rogers, by comparison, has offered little insight into his life and even less about his relationship to broader developments in nineteenth-century science and higher learning.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract New theories of economic growth that are policy-relevant and connect with the histories of success and failure in economic development are urgently needed. This article compares the neoclassical (or market efficiency) school of thought with the production-capability school of thought which included Alexander Hamilton, Friedrich List, and Joseph Schumpeter. Many affirmative, industrial policy steps by governments to promote economic development have been historically recorded—including in the UK and the United States. Meanwhile the neoclassical school has ignored the role of government in helping to create competitive advantage. It has also chosen to ignore how firms are formed, how technologies are acquired, and how industries emerge. The dynamic capability theory of economic growth developed here assigns the central role in economic growth to firms but also an important role to governments. The rate at which a country’s economy grows depends critically on whether its firms can build the capabilities to generate and take advantage of “windows of opportunity” that exist for innovation and new markets, and whether over time they are able to enhance their capabilities to move into higher value-added activities.1

Abstract Engrailed-1 (EN1) is a critical homeodomain transcription factor (TF) required for neuronal survival, and EN1 expression has been shown to promote aggressive forms of triple negative breast cancer. Here, we report that EN1 is aberrantly expressed in a subset of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) patients with poor outcomes. EN1 predominantly repressed its target genes through direct binding to gene enhancers and promoters, implicating a role in the acquisition of mesenchymal cell properties. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments demonstrated that EN1 promoted PDA transformation and metastasis in vitro and in vivo. Our findings nominate the targeting of EN1 and downstream pathways in aggressive PDA. Abstract (sommario):
This article is dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mikhail Andreevich Balugyansky, a prominent scientist and statesman of Rusinian descent (1769–1847), who made a significant contribution to the development of Russian humanities, higher education and public administration by developing a number of important reforms and codification of Russian legislation during the reign of Alexander I and Nicholas I. Having analysed and collated M.A. Balugyansky’s theoretical views of the state, law, economy and society, the authors conclude about their correlation with those of Joseph Sonnenfels, Adam Smith, and the Physiocrats. They emphasize M.A. Balugyansky’s commitment to the capitalist model of development, which he reinforced with his own insights. M.A. Balugyansky applied his theoretical positions to practice. The article focuses on two of his projects – on finance and on state peasants, which had the systemic nature and exerted a strong impact on the subsequent reformative projects. Analyzing these projects as well as challenges of their promotion, the authors conclude that their implementation was limited by the historical conditions of the Russian absolutist state with its inert bureaucracy and dominant noble landlord class. In this regard, the authors argue that M.A. Balugyansky was a forward-thinker, so it was only later that his progressive ideas and reformative activities could be successfully implemented.

Abstract (sommario):
The article examines theoretical approaches of realism, liberalism, Marxism and constructivism towards the investigation, analysis and understanding of the phenomenon of hegemony in theory of international relations. It analyzes the fundamental claims of key representatives of each of the suggested theoretical approaches regarding hegemony. The authors emphasize the importance of theoretical works of representatives of each approach and demonstrate their direct influence on the formation and development of the studied theory within the science of international relations. In particular, the article provides an analysis of the theoretical views of such leading international relations scholars and theorists, as John Ikenberry, Robert Gilpin, Charles Kindleberger, John Mearsheimer, John Ruggie, Alexander Wendt and Christian Reus-Smit. In addition, the views of Antonio Gramsci, Robert Cox, Robert Keohane and Joseph Nye, which formed the foundation of the theory of hegemony in international relations, were investigated. The authors emphasize on the fundamental impact of the investigated approaches of realism, liberalism, marxism and constructivism towards the understanding of the phenomenon of hegemony within the academia, as well as on the theoretical reasoning and on the realization of this phenomenon in international relations. Concordantly, the relevance of the study of the phenomenon of hegemony in terms of theory and practice of international relations is emphasized.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Methionine adenosyltransferase 2A (MAT2A) is an essential enzyme responsible for biosynthesis of S-adenosylmethionine, a methyl-group donor of various methyltransferases. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma PDAC is characterized by severe hypoxia and upregulates autophagy and lysosomal biogenesis to enhance nutrient recycling and stress resistance. Here we show that a subset of MAT2A is targeted via the autophagy pathway for degradation by the lysosome under normoxia in PDAC cells, but is subsequently protected against degradation under hypoxia. Mechanistically, we show that the autophagy cargo receptor SQSTM1 (p62) binds to MAT2A in a ubiquitin-dependent manner under normoxia to regulate its autophagic capture. Under hypoxic conditions, stabilized MAT2A potentially facilities increased flux of methionine towards increased SAM, suggesting that protection of MAT2A against lysosomal degradation might enable alterations in methionine metabolism that drive epigenetic and metabolic adaptation to stress.
