Abstract (sommario):
Previous work in this laboratory showed that concurrent consumption of an iron-deficient diet and exposure to lead caused seizure activity in Albany heterogeneous (HET) stock mice. In the present investigation, 26 Albany HET mice (ages 35 to 57 days of age) ate either an American Institute of Nutrition approved iron-sufficient (30 ppm) diet or an iron-deficient (less than 3 ppm) diet and drank either a 0.5% lead solution or distilled water for 12 weeks. We measured several activities in an open-field, hole-board apparatus, and spontaneous seizures which occurred during testing, changes in body weight, and hemoglobin levels. Replicating previous findings, mice fed the iron-deficient diet and treated with lead had more seizures with longer durations and longer postictal periods than animals given the iron-sufficient diet but also treated with lead. Mice not exposed to lead did not seize. Both lead-treated groups had lower rates of body-weight gain over the 3-mo. period and lower hemoglobin values than nonlead-treated animals. Changes in activity were observed in the open field as a function of diet and exposure to lead.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Fifteen outbreak-linked Salmonella enterica strains in chicken meat were evaluated under simulated human gastrointestinal conditions for their resistance and susceptibility to 11 antibiotics from seven antibiotic classes. The MIC of each antibiotic was determined by microdilution in broth before and after the exposure of each strain to a continuous system simulating the conditions in the human mouth, esophagus-stomach, duodenum, and ileum. Strains were inoculated onto chicken breast (9 g; inoculated at 5 log CFU/g) prior to exposure. Data were interpreted according Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute breakpoints. After the in vitro digestion, 12 Salmonella strains with reduced susceptibility to ciprofloxacin (CIP) changed to CIP resistant. The ceftriaxone (CTX)–intermediate Salmonella Newport strain changed to CTX resistant. The ampicillin (AMP)–susceptible Salmonella Heidelberg strain changed to AMP resistant, and the sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (SXT)–susceptible strains of Salmonella serovars Typhimurium, Agona, Newport, Albany, and Corvallis changed to SXT resistant. The Salmonella Heidelberg, Salmonella Newport, Salmonella Albany, and Salmonella Corvallis strains had the highest frequency of changes in antibiotic susceptibility with new resistant phenotypes to AMP and CIP, CTX and SXT, CIP and SXT, and CIP and SXT, respectively. Conditions imposed by a simulated gastrointestinal environment changed the susceptibility of S. enterica strains to clinically relevant antibiotics and should be considered in the selection of therapies for human salmonellosis.

Abstract (sommario):
The recent advancement in autonomous robotics is directed toward designing a reliable system that can detect and track multiple objects in the surrounding environment for navigation and guidance purposes. This paper aims to survey the recent development in this area and present the latest trends that tackle the challenges of multiple object tracking, such as heavy occlusion, dynamic background, and illumination changes. Our research includes Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) methods incorporating the multiple inputs that can be perceived from sensors such as cameras and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR). In addition, a summary of the tracking techniques, such as data association and occlusion handling, is detailed to define the general framework that the literature employs. We also provide an overview of the metrics and the most common benchmark datasets, including Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Toyota Technological Institute (KITTI), MOTChallenges, and University at Albany DEtection and TRACking (UA-DETRAC), that are used to train and evaluate the performance of MOT. At the end of this paper, we discuss the results gathered from the articles that introduced the methods. Based on our analysis, deep learning has introduced significant value to the MOT techniques in recent research, resulting in high accuracy while maintaining real-time processing.

Abstract (sommario):
A new optical system based on multiple reflection of X-rays and neutrons along specially shaped solid surfaces first proposed by Kumakhov has undergone intense and rapid development in the USSR and more recently in a joint development effort between the Institute for Roentgen Optical Systems (IROS) in Moscow, Russia, and the Center for X-Ray Optics (CXO) in Albany, NY. The most used X-ray Optical System (XOS) utilizes thin hollow microcapillary tubes arranged appropriately to capture X-rays from a divergent source to produce a quasiparallel beam or a focussed beam as shown schematically in Figure 1. Alternatively, a parallel beam of X-rays (or neutrons) can be deflected or focused. It is also possible to use such systems for energy filtering or energy selection. The first such systems were constructed from single hollow capillaries and showed that X-rays could indeed be captured and focussed as shown in Figure 2. These "first generation" Kumakhov optics are most efficient for relatively low energy X-rays (0.5-2 keV).

Abstract (sommario):
Object The development of self-expanding stents dedicated to intracranial use has significantly widened the applicability of endovascular therapy to many intracranial aneurysms that would otherwise have been untreatable by endovascular techniques. Recent Food and Drug Administration approval of the Enterprise Vascular Reconstruction Device and Delivery System (Cordis) has added a new option for self-expanding stent-assisted intracranial aneurysm coiling. Methods The authors established a collaborative registry across multiple institutions to rapidly provide largevolume results regarding initial experience in using the Enterprise in real-world practice. Ten institutions (University at Buffalo, Thomas Jefferson University, University of Florida, Cleveland Clinic, Northwestern University, West Virginia University, University of Puerto Rico, Albany Medical Center Hospital, the Neurological Institute of Savannah, and the Barrow Neurological Institute) have provided consecutive data regarding their initial experience with the Enterprise. Results In total, 141 patients (119 women) with 142 aneurysms underwent 143 attempted stent deployments. The use of Enterprise assistance with aneurysm coiling was associated with a 76% rate of ≥ 90% occlusion. An inability to navigate or deploy the stent was experienced in 3% of cases, as well as a 2% occurrence of inaccurate deployment. Procedural data demonstrated a 6% temporary morbidity, 2.8% permanent morbidity, and 2% mortality (0.8% unruptured, 12% ruptured). Conclusions The authors report initial results of the largest series to date in using the Enterprise for intracranial aneurysm treatment. The Enterprise is associated with a high rate of successful navigation and low occurrence of inaccurate stent deployment. The overall morbidity and mortality rates were low; however, caution should be exercised when considering Enterprise deployment in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage as the authors' experience demonstrated a high rate of associated hemorrhagic complications leading to death.

Abstract (sommario):
This work is part of a wider research on the relationship between Italy and the Nordic countries, headed by prof. Antonello Alici at the Università Politecnica delle Marche. The work is organized chronologically around the analysis of both Italian articles on Nordic countries and original archival materials, tracing back the mutual relationships with the Italian audience, focusing on artistic and architectural travels and exhibitions. In particular, the research focuses on the events related to the nation –Sweden– which first had the most relevant introduction into Italian Architecture since the first Venetian Biennale in 1895. The first chapter investigates the genesis of this relationship before the beginning of the First World War, thanks to the contribution of figures as Vittorio Pica and Ferdinand Boberg. The second chapter deals with the consequences occurred after the First World War, with the emigration of the futurist Arturo Ciacelli (1883-1966), the engraver Guido Balsamo Stella (1882-1941) and the travels of the architect Giuseppe Broglio (1874-1956). The third chapter concentrates on the two Fascist decades, focusing on the role of Institutions like the Triennale in Milan and the Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Rome. Finally, the last chapter examines the Post-war period, when Italian admiration for Swedish design and architecture found interesting resonances both in the INA Casa plans as well as in some exhibition projects, in the work of Italian architects like Piero Bottoni (1903-1973), Piero Maria Lugli (1923-2008), Gio Ponti and Franco Albini (1905-1977). The research highlights how the new Institutions, on the heels of the ones founded in the previous decades, like the Swedish Institute (SI) and the Italian Institute of Culture in Stockholm (IIC) –both still active nowadays– had a fundamental role in the International propaganda. Finally, the thesis discusses how this complex combination of personal experiences, art and architectural magazines and official institutions formed the real background for an historian like Bruno Zevi, who was the first to insert three Nordic masters in his seminal pamphlet Verso un’architettura organica, and Leonardo Benevolo, who in 1960 recognized the role of ‘peripheral’ areas like Sweden and Finland, in his History of Modern Architecture.

Eminger, Stefanie Ursula. "Carl Friedrich Geiser and Ferdinand Rudio : the men behind the first International Congress of Mathematicians". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6536.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The first International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) was held in Zurich in 1897, setting the standards for all future ICMs. Whilst giving an overview of the congress itself, this thesis focuses on the Swiss organisers, who were predominantly university professors and secondary school teachers. As this thesis aims to offer some insight into their lives, it includes their biographies, highlighting their individual contributions to the congress. Furthermore, it explains why Zurich was chosen as the first host city and how the committee proceeded with the congress organisation. Two of the main organisers were the Swiss geometers Carl Friedrich Geiser (1843-1934) and Ferdinand Rudio (1856-1929). In addition to the congress, they also made valuable contributions to mathematical education, and in Rudio's case, the history of mathematics. Therefore, this thesis focuses primarily on these two mathematicians. As for Geiser, the relationship to his great-uncle Jakob Steiner is explained in more detail. Furthermore, his contributions to the administration of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology are summarised. Due to the overarching theme of mathematical education and collaborations in this thesis, Geiser's schoolbook "Einleitung in die synthetische Geometrie" is considered in more detail and Geiser's methods are highlighted. A selection of Rudio's contributions to the history of mathematics is studied as well. His book "Archimedes, Huygens, Lambert, Legendre" is analysed and compared to E W Hobson's treatise "Squaring the Circle". Furthermore, Rudio's papers relating to the commentary of Simplicius on quadratures by Antiphon and Hippocrates are considered, focusing on Rudio's translation of the commentary and on "Die Möndchen des Hippokrates". The thesis concludes with an analysis of Rudio's popular lectures "Leonhard Euler" and "Über den Antheil der mathematischen Wissenschaften an der Kultur der Renaissance", which are prime examples of his approach to the history of mathematics.

This research is mainly concerned with a robust method for an improved performance of a real-time speech enhancement and noise cancellation in a real reverberant environment. Therefore, the thesis titled, "A Kepstrum Approach to Real-Time Speech Enhancement" presents an application technique of a kepstrum method to a speech enhancement method. The kepstrum approach is based on a fundamental theory of kepstrum analysis, which gives a mathematical construct to the application of a speech enhancement. kepstrum analysis is applied to the system identification application of unknown acoustic transfer functions between two microphones. This kepstrum method provides a mathematical representation with FFT based processing and is independent of acoustic path model order. The front-end application of the kepstrum method to speech enhancement methods provides an improved performance in speech enhancement and noise cancellation with several favourable effects.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis presents a complete self-calibrating illumination intensity-invariant colour classification system. We extend a novel fuzzy colour processing tech- nique called Fuzzy Colour Contrast Fusion (FCCF) by combining it with a Heuristic- assisted Genetic Algorithm (HAGA) for automatic fine-tuning of colour descriptors. Furthermore, we have improved FCCF’s efficiency by processing colour channels at varying colour depths in search for the optimal ones. In line with this, we intro- duce a reduced colour depth representation of a colour image while maintaining efficient colour sensitivity that suffices for accurate real-time colour-based object recognition. We call the algorithm Variable Colour Depth (VCD) and we propose a technique for building and searching a VCD look-up table (LUT). The first part of this work investigates the effects of applying fuzzy colour contrast rules to vary- ing colour depths as we extract the optimal rule combination for any given target colour exposed under changing illumination intensities. The second part introduces the HAGA-based parameter-optimisation for automatically constructing accurate colour classifiers. Our results show that for all cases, the VCD algorithm, combined with HAGA for parameter optimisation improve colour classification via a pie-slice colour classifier. For 6 different target colours, the hybrid algorithm was able to yield 17.63% higher overall accuracy as compared to the pure fuzzy approach. Fur- thermore, it was able to reduce LUT storage space by 78.06% as compared to the full-colour depth LUT.

Njume, Collise. "Bioactive Components of Australian Native Plant species and their Potential Antidiabetic Application within the Indigenous Community". Thesis, 2020. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/41825/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), driven by overweight and obesity linked to unhealthy diets, is the fastest-growing non-communicable disease in Australia. Considering that food is an important parameter in the regulation of blood glucose response, replacing ‘junk food’ with products that are good regulators of postprandial blood glucose (PPG) may go a long way to reduce the rate of T2DM in Australia. This study was designed to develop new food products that have the potential for use as nutritional preventatives against escalating levels of T2DM within the Australian Indigenous community. Edible portions of eight Australian native plant species namely; Leucopogon parviflorus, Arthropodium strictum, Carpobrotus rossii, Rhagodia candolleana, Typha orientalis, Correa alba, Dianella revoluta and Acacia longifolia were collected from the coast of Warrnambool, Victoria Australia. The plant species were analysed for proximate, minerals, fatty acids and phenolic composition following the methods of the Association of Official Analytical Chemistry (AOAC), Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectometry (ICP), High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography/Mass spectrometry analysis (GCMS). Plant species that exhibited significantly high amounts of nutrients, antioxidants and antidiabetic polyphenols were selected for development of potential antidiabetic food preventatives. The developed food products (Acabungi flakes and crackers) were evaluated for acceptability and the cracker was further studied for stability and microbiological load. Its Glycaemic index (GI) was estimated by in-vitro enzymatic starch hydrolysis. All eight plant species were found to be sources of carbohydrates (39.7 - 65.5%), proteins (2.6 - 15.1%), fats (1 - 14.3%), total dietary fibre (1.5 - 17.2%) and contained Ca, Mg, Na and K. The species exhibited consistent antioxidant activity with phyto-components of gallic acid (GA), epigallocatechin (EPC), catechin (CH), epigallocatechingallate (EPG), dihydroquinidine (DHQ), ρ-coumaric acid (PCA) and luteolin (LT). The betacyanin, betanidin 5-O-β-glucoside (BT) was detected in R. candolleana (700 mg/kg) and C. rossi (244 mg/kg) while the alkaloid, Dihydroquinidine (DHQ) was detected in D. revoluta (101 ± 5.7 mg/kg) and T. orientalis (17 ± 7.1 mg/kg). However, not all the compounds were isolated from a single plant species and except for BT, higher quantities of components were extractable in methanol than water (P<0.05). Palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids were the dominant of 10 fatty acids detected in the native species with record quantities of 4.2 - 39%, 12.3 - 39% and <0.5 - 44% respectively. No single species had all 10 fatty acids. The cracker, with a record overall consumer acceptability of 70.5% remained stable and unchanged with no microbial growth after 35-days storage at room temperature under light and in the dark. The cracker contained significant amounts of total dietary fiber, proteins, complex carbohydrates and exhibited a low GI of 47.7. R. candolleana and A. longifolia were found to have high contents of betanin and linoleic acid respectively, two components with potentially wide industrial application. Further studies to determine the antidiabetic mechanism of action of the cracker would shed more light on its potential application.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In New York State, it was the canal’s physical presence that was easiest to under stand. The Erie Canal was, in essence, a trench forty feet wide, four feet deep, and 363 miles long. Because Lake Erie was nearly 600 feet higher in elevation than the Hudson River at Albany, the waterway had to rise through eighty-three locks, including a five-tiered set of double locks at Lockport (near Buffalo) that Thurlow Weed pro claimed ‘will probably remain for ages as a monument of American Genius and American patriotism.’ To carry the canal across the Genesee River an aqueduct 802 feet long was raised, spanning the river on stone arches. The engineers in charge of work had limited experience, and their need for more trained help was one of the motives that led to the founding of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1824, the nation’s first school dedicated to civil engineering.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Most primate species live in tropical forests. Tropical forests are not only disappearing fast, but disappearing at an increasing rate, at an average of more than 2.5% annually in some countries, thus giving a time to total forest disappearance in some countries of well under a century (Myers, 1984; Barnes, 1990; Skole and Tucker, 1993; Harcourt, 1995a; World Resources Institute, 1996). Primates are therefore disappearing fast: some species number fewer than l(K)O individuals (Mittermeier and Cheney, 1987). The question addressed here is how might we, as biologists, identify those species that are most at risk? Some conservationists have suggested that measures of human impact on a region are a better indicator of the future than are biological measures of what is happening (Brown, 1981; Western, 1982; Weber, 1987; Leader-Williams and Alban, 1988; Peres and Terborgh, 1995; see also Harrison, 1987), However, while analysis of human impact can inform us of the fate of a whole ecosystem, it might be less applicable to predicting the future of individual species within a region.

Abstract (sommario):
In August 2013, the Purdue University President and Board of Trustees designated the transformation of the College of Technology into the Purdue Polytechnic Institute as one of Purdue’s “Big Moves”. This transformation requires changes of enormous breadth and depth for everyone in the college. Now, almost half-way through the transformation, milestones and expectations continue to be met. However, much work is still to be done to fully execute a successful transformation. The transformation continues to allow faculty extraordinary opportunities to revise many parts of the college, including curricula, instruction methods, learning spaces, etc. A key characteristic of the transformation is creating learning environments that are student-centered with innovative instruction techniques. TECH 120 – “Design Thinking in Technology”, is a freshman level survey course designed to develop a student’s perspective and enhance their skills in living and working in a technological society while introducing them to the College of Technology — now Purdue Polytechnic. Prior to the fall 2015 semester, Purdue Polytechnic New Albany decided to redesign portions of their TECH 120 course. The aim was to improve team project-based learning opportunities while incorporating modernized teaching methods. With a fresh set of eyes and collaboration between new and tenured faculty the projects, lectures, and assessments were all analyzed looking for areas for higher level of innovation and creativity. The aim for the overall effort was to increase student success rate (i.e. successful completion of assigned project tasks) while improving the alignment with elements of the transformation. In past semesters, the course consisted of a mixture of traditional instructor-led lectures and a series of team projects. Each individual project part was intended to build upon each other while promoting the successful completion of a much larger final task. At the core of each project was LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT. The second generation set in the MINDSTORMS series is a programmable robotics kit that is based on robotics technology similar to that used in industry today. Each group (3–4 students) were given their own kit at the beginning of the semester. The final project statement was to design and build an autonomous robot which could identify and follow a light source attached to an instructor’s robot, which would be driven around a room. This task proved to be difficult and had a low success rate. The new project is to design and build a robot that autonomously draws the initials (first and last name) of each team member within an assigned writing zone on a poster. The constant and open collaboration between the two TECH 120 instructors and the incorporation of student input proved to be important during the redesign. The success rate at the end of the semester increased. From course surveys, data also shows that students’ enjoyment and interest in the final project increased. This short paper will describe the introduction to a team project-based activity in a polytechnic setting which uses modernized teaching methods. Preliminary findings and observations will be presented.

Abstract (sommario):
"The Wildfire Risk Forecast (WRF) remains a daily procedure conducted by the National Centre for Forecast and Monitoring of Natural Hazards (NCFMNH), which is part of the Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment (IGEWE) of Albania. WRF is generated on daily basis, by the country’s administrative unit (prefecture) and disseminated to the General Directorate of Civil Emergencies (GDCE) in order to help better coordinate fire-fighting activities. This study investigates the accuracy of the Wildfire Risk Forecasts during the 2020 summer season by analysing fire occurrences over each prefecture of Albania for two components of wildfire forecast Performance, i.e., The Prefecture Hit Probability (PHP) and the Average Fires per Hit (AFH). The study has revealed a “VERY GOOD” Performance for the “High Risk Level” forecast alerts, “GOOD” Performance for the “Moderate Risk Level” and “Low Risk Level” forecast alerts, and VERY GOOD” Performance for the “No Risk Level”"

Abstract (sommario):
Albania has gone through different reforms of decentralization and territorial administrative since the 1990s. Especially after 2013, these reforms have reshaped the layout of the local territorial administration in Albania. The outcomes of these reforms nevertheless remain questionable. Additionally, considering the EU integration process, the regionalization reform and the regional development reform are still in a critical juncture. This paper analyses the main events during the territorial administrative reform and the regionalization process in Albania. Its analysis tries to highlight the main issues and some recommendations for future action to deepen decentralization and improve local governance in Albania. This is done by comprehensive analysis of the reform based on research and contribution of POLIS University 1 and Co-PLAN Institute for Habitat Development 2 as key local stakeholders. In addition, the Albanian case (Western Balkan Countries) is compared to 2 other case studies of formerly centralized economies (Eastern-Europe) with relatively similar historic stability problematics, economic background, and country/population size, but with geographic location differences (South, North, East) and other differences, such as with regard European integration progress. This includes Estonia (Baltic Countries) and Moldova (Eastern Partnership Countries). Then the comparison is done via i) Local administrative reform; ii) Regionalization and regional development; iii) Analysis of the reform and its challenges; iv) and a matrix-based qualitative conclusion. Albanian case includes desk and field work, while Estonian and Moldavian cases are based on desk research.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Mathematical models are a valuable tool to study different water related problems. 1Dimensional and 2Dimensional mathematical models are widely used in river engineering studies. 1D and 2D mathematical models are set-up for Buna River using SOBEK software developed from Deltares Institute, the Netherlands. Buna River is part of the water system of Shkodra Lake, Drini and Buna River. This water system is the largest in Albania, and receives significant amounts of annual precipitation ranging from 1600 mm to 4000 mm. This water system discharges all its waters into the Adriatic Sea through Buna River bed, which has a total length of around 44 km. Around 1.5 km from flowing out of Shkodra Lake, Buna River joins Drini River, and then meanders in a low land area before discharging into the sea. Validation is a very important step in the process of building a mathematical model for a water system. Validation of 1D and 2D mathematical models for Buna River is done by using the hourly water level data from on-line stations for an event. The results of both models are evaluated based on graphical comparison and statistical tests such as: Root Mean Square Error, Mean Absolute Error, and Correlation Coefficient. The 1D mathematical model shows a better performance for the flow inside the river banks (bankfull discharge) due to a more accurate representation of the river bathymetry

Abstract (sommario):
The remittances of international migrants contribute to the well-being of their households of origin and also have an impact at macro-economic level. Out-migration is an effective means for low-income households to quickly overcome shortages of income. The sustenance of poor households might have been more difficult without such remittances. From a macro-perspective, remittances contribute to the equalization of the income distribution among households having out-migrants. This study examines the significance of selected macro-economic and demographic factors associated with remittance behaviour in Romania and several Balkan countries (Bulgaria, Turkey and Albania) as characterized by the propensity to remit and the amount remitted. The extent to which remittances affect the living standard of house-holds left behind is also appraised. In this respect we used macroeconomic datasets provided by World Bank and national statistical institutes. We develop a model to study the effects of migration and remittances on inequality in the origin communities, by employing regression analysis. Among the main findings is that the evolution of the regional Gross Domestic Product is positively related to the growth of the amount of remittances conveyed through the official network as part of the total amount of remittances.

Abstract (sommario):
This research paper builds on the analytical work conducted by Co-PLAN, Institute for Habitat Development under the “Green Lungs for Our Cities” project, supported by the EU Delegation in Albania. This specific publication consists of the analysis of data from a dedicated ground-based monitoring process conducted from March 11th to May 11th, 2020 in 4 different locations of Tirana on PM2.5, PM10 and NO2, based on the protocol and practice established by the Alter- native Monitoring Methodology of the Green Lungs project (link). This in the perspective of the effect that quarantine had on specific pollutants in comparison with before and after the period of restrictions. Other sources, such as publications from the World Bank “Regional Note on Air Quality Management in Western Balkans”, +IQAir “2019 World Air Quality Report”, European Environmental Agency “Air Quality in Europe – 2019 Report” and “Assessing Air Quality through citizens science”, were also consulted during the analysis of data from this 62-days monitoring practice. The data provide an overview of how concentration levels of the selected air pollutants changed during the lockdown phase and after the removal of measures. The purpose of the mon- itoring process and the report was threefold (i) to verify the direct linkages between air pollutants and sources of pollution, (ii) raise awareness of air pollution among state and non-state actors, (iii) propose relevant measures to reduce urban air pollution for the near to mid-term future.
