Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This article uses multidimensional scaling and correspondence analysis to explore how international airline passengers position various air carriers. The analysis has produced perceptual maps of relative positions of airlines and their service attributes. Empirical data were collected from Taiwanese air passengers who had flown from Taipei to Tokyo and to Singapore. Factor analysis was performed to reduce a large number of airline service attributes into a small set of underlying factors. The results of multidimensional scaling analyses reveal that some air carriers are closely competitive; this can be seen by their close proximity in the perceptual map. However, certain airlines possess a unique service quality profile and are not strongly associated with other airlines; such unique firms appear as isolated points on the perceptual map. Interestingly, both multidimensional scaling and correspondence analysis produce similar perceptual maps of the airlines' relative positions and service attributes. However, the advantage of correspondence analysis over multidimensional scaling is that data collection is relatively quick and easy because the analyst is not required to obtain respondents' ratings for each attribute. This study provides specific suggestions about how air carriers on each route can use the results to improve their performance or to build a differential edge.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes the performance of low-cost air carriers in the regional context and in comparison with the activities of classical airlines. The tendency of growth of performance indicators of airline companies that have used this model during all the years since its inception is determined. The main factors influencing the growth of the low-cost segment in the total volume of air transportation are analyzed. It is determined that the dynamic growth to 31% of the total number of air transportation in the world is due to an increase in the number of passengers as a result of efficiency measures taken by low-cost airlines aimed at increasing the passenger load factor, reducing costs and improving the organizational structure. The tendency of development of low-cost airlines in the Ukrainian aviation market is characterized. A comparison of the LCC and FSC models by the main features is made. The cost structure, the difference in costs of airlines using different models, and the reasons for this are described. The route models used by classic airlines and low-cost airlines are described. The impact of primary and secondary costs from the introduction of a new low-cost airline on the costs of other economic agents is described. The effects arising from the introduction of a new low-cost airline are determined. The consequences of changes in the LCC and FSC models caused by the convergence process are investigated. The signs of a hybrid model that can become more attractive to a wide range of consumers, which, in turn, will contribute to the growth of passenger traffic and strengthen the airline's position in the market, are determined.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Low-cost carrier (LCC) is a popular air transportation service as it offers affordable fares. Many airlines have adopted the LCC system because they need to adapt to the changes in the airline industry. The competition is tight. Despite the low cost, consumers demand quality services. Therefore, LCC airlines need to find their competitive edge. Objective: This study aims to determine the best-performing LCC airlines, the criteria, and the sub-criteria to improve the performance. Methods: This study uses two methods from multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM), namely the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and elimination et choix traduisant la realite (ELECTRE) II. The MCDM is selected for this study because there are four criteria and 21 sub-criteria to evaluate airline performance. The AHP method selects subcriteria that affect airline customer satisfaction. It solves complex problems by establishing a hierarchy. After being assessed by relevant parties, weights or priorities are developed. The results are used to determine the best-performing airline. Meanwhile, the ELECTRE II method ranks the airline’s alternatives. This method is straightforward and widely used in the MCDM. Results: The results indicate that four criteria and 18 sub-criteria affect the performance of LCC airlines in Indonesia. The LCC airline with the best performance is AirAsia, followed by Citilink, Wings Air, and Lion Air. Conclusion: This research integrates the AHP and ELECTRE II methods in evaluating the performance of LCC airlines. This research also provides information about the criteria and sub-criteria to improve airline performance, hence, the customer experience.

Abstract (sommario):
To identify the trends of air transportation market development in Ukraine during the period 2010–2018, the analysis of the riskiness of the external market environment of airlines being the major market actors and main factors, which influence the air transportation market development, were made in the paper using statistical methods and methods of probability theory. The working hypothesis was proved on corresponding the main trends of air transportation market development in Ukraine with the world ones and the very high riskiness of the external environment of the airlines. There is some local specifics of the air transportation market in Ukraine connected with the armed conflict at the East of the country, a significant impact of non-economic factors in some years, and implementation of international safety standards. The COVID-19 impact is considered only as a discussion question. The originality of the paper is in discussing the modern trends of air transportation market development in Ukraine in the context of considering the interaction “subject – poly-subject environment”. The airlines are considered as the subjects that interact with a market as an external poly-subject environment. The results of the research identified that the riskiness of the external market environment is at the critical level for the majority of the studied airlines that does not contribute to successful business activity in Ukraine. European and Ukrainian official authorities can use the obtained results during the development and implementation of the joined cooperation in the sphere of air transportation. Besides, in the context of COVID-19, the trends of imroving aviation safety and satisfying international standards are becoming increasingly important for airlines as well as for state authorities in developing the appropriate state policy.

Abstract (sommario):
Methods for analyzing the economic activity of airlines and forecasting the prerequisites for bankruptcy of airlines is becoming an important task for development of the industry. In past years, there were examples of a sound negative experience related to bankruptcy of airlines. At the same time, the main volume indicators of the airlines concerned had got positive dynamics shortly before the bankruptcy and were considered by BCG matrix as evident «stars» in terms of growth in production volumes and in the share of the air transportation market. In Russia that was the case of Sibir airlines which in 2007–2008 barely avoided bankruptcy, as well as of Transaero Airlines that has left the air transportation market forever. The first lowcost airlines, Skyexpress and Avianova, went bankrupt amid high growth in the number of passengers transported. The task of the research was to create a model that allows to simulate the situation associated with the airline overcoming the so-called «second break-even point». To forecast the possible time period for the airline to receive an operating loss against the background of growing volume indicators, production and financial indicators of one of the leading Russian airlines were used. The method of research is modelling of volume and financial indicators of the airline activity. The model is proposed to be built not on the study of future changes in the growth of volume and financial indicators, but on the study of dynamics of the rate of change of those indicators. The study is based on the fact that the dynamics of air transportation has a cyclical basis, which is invisible when directly analyzing changes in production and financial indicators, and which is on the contrary clearly visible when studying the dynamics of the rates of those indicators, which makes it possible to simulate a situation when the airline will have an operational loss in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
Understanding the economic characteristics of the U.S. airline industry, assessing the degree of competition/rivalry among the competing airline businesses in the U.S. airline industry, and (3) making recommendations to the airlines and to the consumers of air transportation are the primary objectives of this research study. The authors analyze the rivalry among major U.S. airlines operating in the domestic market using datasets extracted from Bureau of Transportation Statistics for operations during a 12-month period ending in May 2019. Amongst the 17 major U.S. airlines, whose annual operational revenue is over $1 billion, a set of top-five airlines has been identified using the percentage of their marketshare. The research findings indicate that these five major airlines have an intense rivalry in the U.S. domestic market in terms of number of markets served, number of departures made, number of passengers transported, amount of cargo carried, load factor, revenue and cost of operations, profit and loss, and net income earned. Hence, these airlines put pressure on one another and limit each other’s profit potential.

Abstract (sommario):
Demand for air transportation has boomed extensively in Southeast (SE) Asia during the past decade as a result of economic development and the lack of land routes between destinations. The purpose of this study is to focus on the cost-leadership competitive strategy applied by low-cost carriers (LCCs) in SE Asia airlines and explore the elements that affect the competing capability of these airlines in the region. Furthermore, the study attempts to illustrate the key success factors that have resulted in the superiority of AirAsia (AA) airline among other LCCs airlines in the competitive market of SE Asia. The research shows that the regulatory environment in the regions air transportation business is an important barrier for the development of local LCCs airlines. Hence, AA attempts to cope with these barriers have been illustrated in this research.

Abstract (sommario):
The pricing policy of airlines is developed based on a retrospective analysis of the price dynamics of air transportation and forecasting the market situation of supply and demand. The price dynamics of passenger air transportation has a certain structure and patterns, the identification of which helps to develop a competitive price offer for consumers. The objective of the work is to determine the structure of price dynamics and identify patterns of price fluctuations in passenger air transportation from 2008 to 2022, which is important to consider when developing the pricing policy of airlines and the range of tariffs. Studies of the price dynamics of airline tickets by econometric methods allowed to identify the structure of the time series of prices and develop several models. The study of the price dynamics structure, first, identified and analysed the seasonal component of the dynamics of airline ticket prices. Its calculation was carried out using additive and multiplicative models. The range of seasonal changes was -8,5% to +12,5%. The autocorrelation function of the dynamics of average monthly prices showed that the time series of airline ticket prices contained a trend. In addition to trend and seasonal components, cyclical fluctuations were identified in the price dynamics, the modelling of which was carried out based on regression analysis. Cyclical changes in the dynamics of air ticket prices, identified from 2008 to the present, are not sustainable.Analysed dynamics revealed several medium-term cycles with a duration of 4–6 years. The cyclical dynamics of air transportation prices largely coincides with the general economic medium-term cycles, but there are time lags or lagging growth and decline rates. Thus, the change in prices for civil air transportation has a natural trend-cyclical character shaped under the influence of fundamental macroeconomic factors and new determinants, the effect of which may result in a stronger change but with shorter impact or lag effect. Additive and multiplicative models will help predict average annual prices.

Abstract (sommario):
Because the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia is a very large archipelagic country with many islands, inter-island travel requires a mode of transportation. The rapid population growth demands the development of transportation as a means to assist people in meeting their needs. This encourages the public and private sectors to build effective transportation facilities. As a result of these developments, airlines often make mistakes such as flight delays. NAM AIR is one of the private airlines that often delays flights at Iskandar Pangkalan Bun Airport, Central Kalimantan. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of flight delays on the intention to buy tickets for NAM AIR airlines and how much influence they have on purchasing intentions for NAM AIR airlines. Data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires in this quantitative study using a purposive sampling technique and a sample of 100 respondents. Using SPSS 21, Descriptive Test, Simple Classical Assumption Test, and Hypothesis Test (T-T) were used for data analysis. Based on the calculated T value of 4.557 and T table of 1.660, the H1 hypothesis is accepted. This shows that the independent variable (flight delay) has an effect on the dependent variable (ticket purchase intention) on the NAM AIR airline at Iskandar Pangkalan Bun Airport, Central Kalimantan. The R Square value of 0.176 indicates that the flight delay variable has an effect of 17.6% on the interest in buying NAM AIR airline tickets at Iskandar Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan.

Abstract (sommario):
The dynamics of airline hubbing in the postderegulation U.S. air transportation system are examined. It is asserted that hubbing is not the result of arbitrary decisions by airlines but of economic forces that allow hubbed traffic to be understood and possibly predicted. On the basis of three primary hubbing criteria, an economic model of hub choice is developed. In the model, hubbing is assumed to be (a) intricately tied to the national air network, (b) grounded in the airlines' economic cost structure, and (c) the result of a balance of supply and demand forces. The route choice model is estimated for domestic U.S. hub markets. The model results support the first two of the three hubbing criteria and produce relative valuations of in-flight time, airport capacity delays, and schedule delays for connecting flights. These results are valuable in understanding the interplay of forces that lead to hub development and decline. In addition, the model structure is promising as a planning tool to investigate the redistribution of traffic in the U.S. air transportation network under various development scenarios and policy actions.

Abstract (sommario):
As already noted in the previous work, “Nutrition on Aircrafts: a Menu Analysis (Part 1)”, the organization of passenger service for air transport consists not only in the transportation of passengers, but also in the organization of meals on board airliners. The assortment of dishes depends on many factors such as: budget of the airline, season, flight duration, class of service, departure time, national characteristics and category of passengers. In this paper, the menus of Nordwind Airlines and Azur Air are considered. The airline “Nordwind Airlines” at the stage of purchasing tickets offers its passengers the opportunity to form their diet from the proposed list of dishes for an additional fee. Typically, the list includes chicken dishes, meat dishes, pilaf and special nutrition (vegetarian nutrition and nutrition for children), there is also the option “Guaranteed nutrition”, which, depending on the duration of the flight, includes soft drinks; hot nutrition; Tea coffee. “Azur Air” Airlines in the standard package of services provides snacks during the flight or does not provide on-board nutrition at all. Nevertheless, there are several services with which you can receive ready-made culinary products for an additional fee. The airline cooperates with Fly Service LLC (St. Petersburg), which provides various catering services, including on board an airplane. The Restaurant on Board service is available only upon departure from Pulkovo Airport (St. Petersburg). The information on the international rating according to the Skytrax World Airline Awards of the world according to the criterion of “Airline Catering” is presented. Among Russian airlines, only Aeroflot in the Economy Class nomination is present in international ratings. The paper presents a menu with the calculation of nutritional value and calorie content.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This study examines the impacts of air transport liberalization policies on economic growth, traffic volume, and traffic flow patterns, and investigates the mechanisms leading to those changes. Our investigation concludes that (1) liberalization has led to substantial economic and traffic growth. Such positive effects are mainly due to increased competition and efficiency gains in the airline industry, as well as positive externalities to the overall economy; (2) liberalization allows airlines to optimize their networks within and across continental markets. As a result, traffic flow patterns will change accordingly. Strategic alliance is a second-best solution and will have a reduced role when foreign ownership restrictions are relaxed; (3) there is a two-way relationship between the expansion of low-cost carriers (LCCs) and liberalization. The rapid growth of LCCs leads to increased competition and stimulated traffic, calling for the removal of restrictions on capacity, frequency, pricing and entry. In addition, development of LCCs in domestic markets can promote liberalization policy for international aviation by increasing the competitiveness of the national aviation industry. On the other hand, the existing regulations hindered the growth of LCCs. Further liberalization is needed for the full realization of associated benefits.

Based on the analysis of the activities of the national airlines «AZAL» and «Buta Airways», taking into account the statistical data of the passenger traffic growth of the Heydar Aliyev International Airport (Baku), as well as data on the development of the national tourism industry, a model of promising development of directions in the structure of the route network of the Heydar Aliyev International Airport is presented. The result of the research is the construction of a model for the prospective development of new directions in the structure of the route network of the Heydar Aliyev International Airport. The main principles of the post-crisis model of the development of the national market, according to the author, is the need to develop the segment of low-cost air transportation. The presented model of the route network development includes the development of the directions of the national budget airline «Buta Airways», as well as the expansion of cooperation with foreign budget airlines «Fly Arystan» (Republic of Kazakhstan), «Wizz Air» (Hungary), and in addition, the development of cooperation with Russian regional airlines, and first of all with the airline «Azimut» as one of the dynamically developing regional airlines of the Russian Federation.

Abstract (sommario):
The tendencies of development of air transportation in Ukraine in the period of world globalization and liberalization in the air transportation market are considered. The analysis of domestic air transportation showed that the growth rate of air transportation in the Ukrainian segment of the market, despite the instability of the military- political and economic situation in the country, is optimistic for predicting the future development of air transportation in Ukraine. The growth of the main indicators of the work of civil aviation in Ukraine demonstrates the growing interest of market participants in air transportation. The passenger air transportation market of Ukraine has sufficient prerequisites for its successful development. First of all, this is due to a significant increase in passenger transportation by air, the creation of new airlines in Ukraine, namely low-cost airlines, the entry of new foreign airlines into the airspace of Ukraine, the opening of new airlines by Ukrainian carriers, the approval of a visa- free regime with EU countries, and the modernization of existing infrastructure air- ports and their development, taking into account modern requirements. The main production indicators are presented and passenger traffic analysis is carried out. It has been determined that the development of civil aviation is related to the general tendencies of international air transport and is conditioned by both global and nation- al socio-economic, political and other factors. The main directions of the industry for a third of the decade of the 21st century are determined.

Abstract. The article discusses the General provisions for the functioning of airlines, the problems concerning the application of the system of management and control of the airline by optimizing of flow processes and air traffic management, flight planning of aircrafts, as well as the analysis processes of air traffic control. The influence of the management system in airlines on the regularity of flights is determined, as well as the optimization of the organization of air traffic planning of aircraft flights in a global pandemic. The dependence on the efficiency of management in terms of organization of technological processes and production services of the airline is characterized. The management strategy as a kind of perfect planning and organization of production is considered, it is proved that the optimal use of resources available at the airline is the key to success. It is substantiated that in order to increase the efficiency of work in the changed after the pandemic market, the airline should introduce changes in the organization of its flight activities. Due to the reduction of passenger traffic and in order to maintain the regularity of flights, one of the options to solve the problem is to re-profile the airline to carry out cargo transportation, the importance of which is for the transportation of medical goods by aircraft. The introduction of global quarantine measures, as well as the related crisis in the passenger air transport market, have accelerated internal preparation processes and given impetus to the faster development of this area in the work of airlines. Thus, it is proved that the effective work of management in a global pandemic is extremely important in the development of organizational measures aimed at reducing the loss of possible profits due to delays or cancellations. The task of developing such recommendations is complicated by the fact that, as the practice of airlines and airports shows, both the time of flight delays and their number are not always dependent on the carrier. It should be noted that a key factor that can significantly affect the quality of the airline in today's environment is the ability to quickly reorient activities from one direction to another, such as expanding freight at a time when passenger traffic is forced to be reduced. In order to achieve greater competitiveness of the airline in the market and ensure more successful work, it is necessary to implement a strategy to improve the quality of services provided. Key words: regularity of flights, management strategy, air traffic management, airline, planning, strategy, pandemic, air transportation.

Abstract (sommario):
Airlines must operate many jobs in airports, such as passenger check-in or runway tasks. In airlines’ hubs, airlines generally choose to perform these jobs with their own agents. Shift planning aims at building the sequences of jobs operated by the airline agents and has been widely studied given its impact on operating costs. The impact of delayed flights is generally not taken into account despite the propagation of flight delays along these sequences: If a flight is late, then the agents doing the corresponding jobs are delayed, and may arrive late to their next jobs and delay the corresponding flights. Since delay costs are much higher than the costs of outsourcing jobs, if the agent who is supposed to operate a job is still working elsewhere when the job begins, then airlines tend to outsource the job to their own dedicated team or to a third party. We introduce a stochastic version of the shift-planning problem that takes into account outsourcing costs due to delay. It can be seen as a natural stochastic generalization of the vehicle-scheduling problem in which delayed jobs are outsourced. We propose a column-generation approach to solve it, whose key element is the pricing subproblem algorithm, modeled as a stochastic resource-constrained shortest-path problem. Numerical results on Air France industrial instances show the benefits of using our stochastic version of the shift-planning problem and the efficiency of the solution method. Moving to the stochastic version enables Air France to reduce total operating costs by 3.5%–4.8% on instances with more than 200 jobs, and our algorithm can solve to near optimality instances with up to 400 jobs.

Abstract (sommario):
Ever since we started air transportation, we have found new ways of traveling more safely everyday with technologies that push the limits of our imagination. Air transport has been connecting the continents with each other. Increased the volume of trade and made it easier to trade with the HUB concept. Airline companies are in the advertising competition while the safety of the flight is at the forefront. Each is more aimed at flying to the region and more often operating. At this point, the limits of competition have been so difficult that our lives have entered different levels of service, including low-cost and traditional. Low-cost airline companies aimed to reduce their costs by cutting some services in the airplane. such as the right to baggage being offered as a separate entitlement other than the ticket price. this service does not mean to cut off safety precautions regularly. Airlines continue to keep all security systems as strong as ever. The purpose of these discontinuities is to make as much of the costs of course as possible and to offer cheaper tickets to passengers. On the other hand, traditional airlines aim to keep passengers 'journeys as comfortable as possible by keeping passengers' services at a nearly luxurious level. Whichever is chosen depends on the needs of the traveller at the moment. Of course, it is no surprise that air travel in the world is so popular. Despite the fact that it is the most expensive transportation vehicle compared to land, sea and railway transportation, İt has always been the first preferred transportation facility by making the travel speed and the intercontinental passage very easy. This intensive preference certainly ensured the formation of HUB centers. HUB is a transfer center built on the world we mean. There are various transfer centers in the world. The most important feature for a HUB is the fact that it is the center of the transfer points. This ensures that the traveler or objects reach the point where they need to reach it strategically in the fastest and safest way without making too many transfers. When we examine in this context as a HUB HUB is a natural Ataturk Airport in Turkey. Ataturk Airport is located on an area of 11,776,961 m2. The terminal with a capacity of 27.5 million passengers per annum has an area of 330.500 m2, 62,500 m2 domestic lines terminal and 268,000 m2 international lines terminal. Ataturk Airport has three pists. Two concrete paved runways is 3000x45 meters. The other is 2600x60 meters and it is covered with Asphalt (Stone Mastic). The right of intention is owned by DHMİ (State Airports Authority) and the terminal operator is TAV Holding. Ataturk Airport is a 60-year-old city that serves the nearest million passengers and is an important hub. Ataturk Airport, shortly growing today, Europe is the fourth largest, the world's 13th airport has become. Ataturk Airport serves more than 160 passengers daily giving. Ataturk Airport has a great advantage due to its location which connects Asia and Europe. which Ataturk Airport is the 6th airport with the highest hub connection worldwide. Today, 128 airline companies from the Ataturk Airport make an entrance to and depart from Ataturk Airport with 276 destinations in 110 countries of the world. Among them airline companies internationally among the world's greatest; Lutfhansa, Air France, KLM and more. When we look at domestic airline companies, we see that HUB carrier is Turkish Airlines with a market share of 75%. Onur Air, Atlas Global and Pegasus Airlines are other stakeholders. When we look at low-cost airline companies that operate at Ataturk Airport, we can say that there are few at the level that can be tried compared to the traditional airlines and domestic airlines. We can see that the biggest traditional local airline company is Turkish Airlines. Pegasus Airlines is the local airline company that has taken the lead in terms of low-cost service. Market share for service type, the result is as follows; Traditional airline companies are the ones that make the most flights to Ataturk airport with a rate of 98.4%. Low cost carriers are operating at 0.9% at Ataturk Airport, including Onur Air and Pegasus Airlines.

Abstract (sommario):
Air transport is one of the major transportation modes in Africa. It has been showing a growth due to significant increase of tourist flights and intercontinental flights. Ethiopian Airlines and South African Airlines are the leading airlines in Africa in terms of working capacity and annual profit. Both Ethiopian and South African Airlines have a website that lets their customers search and book a flight. They also have a mobile application for both android and iOS platforms. The airline industry in Africa is facing market competition from different airlines outside the continent. The competition is getting intense due to the usage of different technological artifacts in the air transport infrastructure by competitors. The development of an accessible and usable website and mobile application for flight booking and related services can help African airlines to compete well. This paper is about evaluating the accessibility of Ethiopian and South African airlines’ websites and mobile applications using manual and automatic accessibility evaluation techniques. As per the evaluation result, both airlines shall work hard to inclusively design their interactive online reservation systems. To do so, they need to consider the seven principles of Universal Design whenever they enhance their interactive systems.

Abstract (sommario):
Corona Virus Disease 2019 or COVID-19 has spread globally and been concerned as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2020a). The virus has an enormous social and economic impact. United Nations Industrial Development Organization (2020) expects that the 2020 global GDP shall range between -8% to 1% depended on the situation during the last six months of 2020. Various businesses – tourism, hospitality, restaurant and transportation get affected by this pandemic. The airline business is one of the most vulnerable business since it is highly sensitive to change in the market environment and socio-economic factors (Wittmer et al., 2011). Airlines business has always dramatically affected during crisis circumstances, e.g., the Asian economic crisis in 1998, the USA terrorist attack in 2001, and the SARS virus spreading in 2003. The airlines lost 7 billion USD in terms of revenue solely because of SARS in 2003 (IATA, 2006). It is possible to expect a much more noticeable impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic comparing to the impact of SARS in 2003 because of the difference in the market environment, especially the difference in market size. The number of passengers per year has increased from 2 billion passengers in 2003 to 4.5 billion passengers in 2018 (IATA, 2019). The International Air Transport Association (IATA, 2020a) forecasts that the airline industry will need at least three to four years for recovering. An overview investigation of the impacts of COVID-19 on airlines can contribute to both academic study and management practice of the airlines. Keywords: COVID-19, Airline, Air transportation

Abstract (sommario):
Through this research, we examined whether airlines vicariously learn more from accidents of alliance members. We set organizational learning as our dependent variable and defined it as a reduction in the subsequent accident rate. Our research also examined the moderating effect of liability (U.S. air carriers) by hypothesizing that U.S. air carriers are more likely to learn from alliance memberships. In sum, the results of our analyses showed that an airline is more likely to learn from alliance members’ failure experiences. Furthermore, findings of the moderating effect of liability (U.S. air carriers) revealed that U.S. air carriers are more likely to learn from alliance memberships. In addition, findings on the moderating effect of environmentally sustainable airlines revealed that an environmentally sustainable airline is more likely to learn from alliance memberships. This research was examined using the accidents database from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of world commercial airlines from 2008 to 2018. We contributed to the previous line of research that explored factors influencing organizational learning and the benefits of forming alliances. The findings of this research could apply to other fields with alliances and accidents.

Abstract (sommario):
Aviation related issues include low supervision of airlines in Indonesia, the condition of aircraft that are old and less feasible and high rates of flight accidents. Management negligence and mistakes reach a level that endangers state security. An airline is an organization that provides flight services including cargo to passengers. They provide these services and form cooperation or alliances with other airlines for mutual benefit. However, the relationship between customers and airlines can sometimes lead to ruthless legal battles and violent conflicts. This paper discusses legal protection for airline customers in Indonesia. It seeks to investigate not only the legal arrangments regarding air transportation in Indonesia but mechanism to minimize/prevent disputes between consumers and airlines. Consumer dispute resolution with airlines refers to the Consumer Protection Act and Aviation Law. The research reveals that consumer-airlines conflicts can be resolved outside of the court through several dispute resolution models, including Consumer Dispute Settlement Agency, Non-Governmental Consumer Protection Agency, the Directorate of Consumer Protection agreed by the parties, based on Article 1338 of the Civil Code. This paper also show that it is necessary to make a simple dispute resolution system specifically for airline consumers in the form of an airline consumer dispute resolution assembly or a special arbitration agency.

Abstract (sommario):
Air transport is the most modern, the quickest and the latest addition to the modes of transport. Because of speed with which aeroplanes can fly, travel by air is becoming increasingly popular. As far as the world trade is concerned it is still dominated by sea transport because air transport is very expensive and is also unsuitable for carrying heavy, bulky goods. However, transportation of high value light goods and perishable goods is increasingly being done by air transport. The financial health of companies declined despite liberal Government patronage, particularly from 1949, and an upward trend in air cargo and passenger traffic. The trend, however, was not in keeping with the expectations of these airlines which had gone on an expansion spree during the post-World War II period, acquiring aircraft ad spares. The Government set up the Air Traffic Enquiry Committee in 1950 to look into the problems of the airline. Though the Committee found no justification for nationalization of airlines, it favored their voluntary merger. Such a merger, however, was not welcomed by the airlines

Abstract Using data on 12 months of operations, Amazon Air's network is contrasted to the domestic networks of FedEx Express and UPS Airlines. Amazon Air has a lower network density than the other two airlines, and its geography is more strongly related to Amazon's distribution centers. Like UPS and FedEx, Amazon has placed its main hub at a location in the central United States: first Wilmington, Ohio and more recently Cincinnati. The acceleration of online retail trade since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic may encourage other digitally native or incumbent retail firms to develop their own air distribution networks. The criteria that distinguish Amazon Air's gateway airports are identified and then those criteria are applied to all public US airports to detect others that might be suitable for incorporation into a retail distribution air network.

Abstract (sommario):
Overbooking is widely used by airlines worldwide as one of the mechanisms that reduces the loss-making during transportation in case some passengers cancel the contract of carriage after purchasing a ticket. Russian legislation does not contain provisions allowing airlines to use this mechanism. In modern conditions, legitimization of overbooking in Russia will ensure minimization of airlines’ losses and protect the rights of passengers through compensatory measures established by law. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the possibility of legitimizing overbooking in the Russian Federation and propose legal measures to protect passengers. Methodologically the author relies on dialectical, comparative legal, systemic methods, as well as methods of legal modeling, analysis and analysis of legal reality. The author examined certain legal norms of the Civil and Air Codes of the Russian Federation regarding the possibility of termination or modification of the passenger air transportation agreement unilaterally (on the initiative of the carrier). The paper provides for a legal justification for this possibility of termination or modification of the passenger air transportation agreement unilaterally (on the initiative of the carrier). The foreign legislation in the field of overbooking has been studied in order to use some of its provisions. Proposals have been developed to determine the «excess» passenger during overbooking and the application of compensation payments. The possibility of legitimizing the use of overbooking in air transportation of passengers in the Russian Federation and ensuring the legal protection of passengers through compensation payments is substantiated.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a time of crisis and uncertainty for the air transportation industry. The gloomy prospects for the industry have stretched business resilience to a critical point. The crisis has caused damage and shock that the aviation industry has never endured before. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of both internally and externally generated airline response strategies by examining business practices for crisis management. Design/methodology/approach This study screened research papers and economic reports from authoritative organizations including the International Air Transport Association, International Civil Aviation Organization, World Health Organization and United Nations World Tourism Organization from December 2019 (the month in which the COVID-19 outbreak occurred) to March 2021 (the most recent month at present). The authors also integrated publicly recognized news articles to cover a wide range of business practices in the airline industry. The authors conducted thematic analysis by filtering news articles and economic reports that mentioned the keywords “COVID-19,” “pandemic,” “CoV-2,” “coronavirus” and “corona.” The authors coded the airlines’ response actions along the two-axis matrix (time and magnitude) and generated insights in a timely manner. Findings Major airlines have modified decision-making in relation to the exponential spread of the virus, which is in direct proportion to the deterioration level in the airline industry. When the impact was low in the early stage, major airlines maintained their status quo. Before long, the magnitude of the destruction became high, which made airlines implement capacity adjustments and request government relief measures. As industrial deterioration deepens, airlines keep calling for state aid packages and have changed their focus to the cargo transportation of high-demand commodities and pharmaceutical supplies. Lastly, industrial adversity and uncertainty have made them defer aggressive takeover opportunities. Originality/value Several researchers have investigated the impacts of the COVID-19 on the airline industry. However, there remains a dearth of scholarship on the hampered business activities and crisis management of the airline industry. In the absence of sufficient response strategies against the COVID-19 panic, this paper is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the major airlines’ response strategies to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, this paper yields an opportunity for on-site management to review how major global airlines have responded to the crisis and find managerial insights to restore their business sustainability.

The aviation industry has been considered one of the major contributors to the economy of nations for several decades. As a sub-sector of the aviation industry, airlines are considered the fastest mode of transportation for passengers and cargo across the globe. Since its invention, airlines have served millions of people to move from one country to another as well as within the country. Despite natural calamities and global war affairs, the airline industry has achieved immense growth in recent decades. In addition to the progress of airlines, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a major hindrance to providing services to people around the world. Due to the rapid spread of deadly diseases, several airline firms have halted their air travel services in many parts of the world. As lockdowns and travel restrictions were enforced, this article examines the crisis of the airline industry after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract (sommario):
The price policy is an inseparable part of business competition. The price policy is not solely related to efforts to maintain prices or even control prices at a certain level but is an effort to generate profits that are proportional to social welfare. Since the entry of business competition regulations in Indonesia, with the increase in airline business actors, the competition between them has become more profitable for consumers. With high competition and competitive prices, airlines, especially national airlines, show that the target of this airline is the middle market share. In this paper, we will discuss the determination of the lower tariffs for air transportation issued in the Regulation of the Minister of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia and regarding its application and impact on consumers and business actors in the aspect of business competition. Research result The stipulation of the lower limit rate stipulated in the Regulation of the Minister of Transportation Number 14 of 2016 is basically against the provisions of the business competition law, particularly about the prohibition on price-fixing as regulated in Article 5 Paragraph (1) of Law No. 5/1999. The effect of Regulation of the Minister of Transportation Number 14 of 2016 on airline business actors and consumers, among others, is that the freedom of business actors to determine their fares is reduced, this results in not achieving price efficiency.

Abstract (sommario):
Lion Air is a private company engaged in air transportation. It uses a low-cost concept “Low-Cost Carrier” with the slogan “We Make People Fly”. Airline ticket prices sold on Lion Air airline sites and travel agents often experience significant fluctuations. It can be seen in certain moments, such as Eid, long holidays, and other holidays. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. This research is research using a field approach in the form of primary data and secondary data. Meanwhile, data sources obtained using observation, interviews, and documentation. Then analyzed descriptively through, reduction, display and conclusion and prescriptive. The implementation of the principle of determining Lion Air ticket prices includes transactions between airlines and consumers, airlines with travel agents, and travel agents with consumers. The transaction in fiqh is classified as an ijarah contract. The second implementation is related to the ticket component which is closely related to fluctuation. Fluctuations caused by the law of normal supply and demand may have consequences, while fluctuations that occur due to company play are categorized as gharar.

Abstract (sommario):
The article presents an analysis of the activities of regional airports in France in 2019. The growth of passenger traffic was observed in those airports that actively developed cooperation with budget airlines, increasing the number of destinations in the route network. Regional airports in France, whose route network structure did not expand in 2019, showed a slight decrease in passenger traffic (from –0.1% to –3%). The first and only experimental regional airport in France (city of Beziers), handling flights of only one budget airline, Ryanair, showed an increase in passenger traffic by 14.5% in 2019. The share of routes of budget airlines in the structure of the route network of regional airports in France is quite high. The key problems of regional airports in Russia are the low passenger traffic and the underdeveloped route network. Due to the presence of the only national budget airline "Pobeda" on the market and the minimal impact on the segment of budget air transportation of foreign airlines, the share of budget air transportation destinations in the structure of regional airports of the Russian Federation continues to remain at an extremely low level. 2019 showed a record growth in passenger traffic at regional airports in the Central Federal District (an increase from +2.8% to +262%, with the exception of Tambov Airport, whose passenger traffic fell by 57.4%), which indicates an increase in demand and the need to expand the route network of regional airports. On the example of the Voronezh airport, a model for the development of low-cost airline destinations is presented.

Abstract (sommario):
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in significant delays and cancellation of airline tickets without proper refunds to consumers by U.S. airlines. In response to an unprecedented number of consumer complaints, in August 2022, the Department of Transportation (Department or DOT) proposed new rules regarding airline ticket refunds and consumer protections.Does this rule go far enough? This article provides a summary of the events and policy changes leading up to the Airline Deregulation Act (ADA) of 1978 and challenges the scope of federal preemption over the field of airline regulation that has created a boon to air carriers while essentially eliminating consumers as a market influencer. A review of court opinions since the enactment of the ADA shows an ongoing struggle with the scope of preemption and tenuous carve-outs for private rights of action. The role and effectiveness of DOT is evaluated in light of airlines refusal to comply with DOT requirements to provide ticket refunds for cancelled flights during COVID. This article also suggests ways to increase airline accountability for compliance with airline refund policies and increase protection of consumer rights by empowering consumers to bring private actions against airlines.

Abstract (sommario):
Intermodal air-rail forms of cooperation have proliferated over the last decades as a response to the need for more efficient and strategic alliance in the transportation industry. Airlines and rail operators have indeed concluded formal agreements allowing them to synchronize services and offer an ever more seamless travel experience. While such agreements certainly generate significant benefits for both consumers and carriers, integration between airlines and rail operators may also raise serious concerns as to the applicable legal framework. In light of this, the present article will emphasize on the main legal implications of air-rail agreements. The analysis will consider three areas of interest, namely, competition law, liability and passenger protection. Whereas in terms of competition law, the same legal categories applicable to airline code-shares and alliances may be easily and conceptually borrowed, peculiar and interesting legal issues seem to arise out of the comparison of different international and European legal regimes with respect to liability and passenger protection.
