Abstract (sommario):
Air transport is by its very nature one of the most international of economic activities. However, until fairly recently, its regulatory framework has been premised on an overriding nationalism developed and maintained on the basis of the following: substantial ownership and effective control provisions found in national legislation and most bilateral air transport agreements; restrictions on cabotage found in national legislation, most bilateral air transport agreements and Article 7 of the Chicago Convention; and the related national restrictions on the right of establishment applicable to national carriers.
However, as the international component of the air transport industry has grown in importance, the tenets underlying this restrictive regulatory system are increasingly coming into question. This thesis examines the development of international airline co-operation and integration, namely by way of mergers, franchises and alliances, in the face of the existing regulatory obstacles. It examines the legal impediments to, the form of, and the costs and benefits of each of these integrative methods and their various derivatives. Finally, it traces the regulatory responses to these integrative activities, and explores the possibility and methodology of creating a truly global airline, both in form and in function.

Abstract (sommario):

The dynamics of business contexts influence the way firms act in their industry. These changes can have effects in several areas within a company. Entrepreneurship and Innovation are two areas that are affected when a change in firm’s environment occurs, like Schumpeter, Shane and Drucker point. Changes in the deregulatory framework are a specific type of change that can occur. According to Entrepreneurship theories, the removal of regulatory barriers creates opportunities to different reallocation of resources that can lead to changes in market equilibrium. This study addresses this relation between deregulation and entrepreneurship-innovation in the European airline industry. With the removal of regulatory barriers, companies like SAS and Ryanair, saw opportunities to do something new and at the same time had to adapt to these “doing something new” behavior of other companies. Entrepreneurship and innovation were the answer to theses changes and the weapon to fight answers to others with this change. Considering this, our statement problem is the following:

How did the deregulation of air transportation in Europe foster entrepreneurial behavior and innovation in the European airline industry over the last twenty years? The case of SAS and Ryanair.

Our goal is to describe the process of deregulation and how firms reacted to it and to give explanations behind the relation deregulation-entrepreneurship, identifying the direct and indirect influence of deregulation in the studied companies. Furthermore, based on this investigation, we will trace possible ways on how future deregulation in Europe can foster further entrepreneurial behavior and innovation.

This thesis was conducted with a positivism scientific ideal and a deductive approach. We used a qualitative method to collect empirical data that could match with the theories we had chosen beforehand. We conducted three interviews with people inside the industry – from airlines (SAS Braathens and SAS) and from airports (LFV). The first two were used as main sources to SAS case study and the third to have a perspective of airline industry. Since we could not get any interview with Ryanair, Ryanair story book was used as main source for this case study.

Our theoretical framework consists of four different broad areas that are interrelated to each other. These areas and the respective theories integrated in them are: institutions and regulation, changes in context and strategic position.

Our study shows that EU deregulation altered the five competitive forces in European airline industry and in turn this fostered entrepreneurship and innovation, as a reaction of firms to adapt to the change in their context. The reaction of Ryanair and SAS through entrepreneurial and innovative behaviour was different due to the differences in their business model. We argue that the removal of barriers to new entrants and the increased rivalry between firms were the main forces that fostered entrepreneurship and innovation. We predict that if further EU deregulation comes (as it is the trend) this will generate more opportunities to entrepreneurship and innovation like it generated in the past.

Abstract (sommario):

At a time of increased use and competitiveness amongst U.S. regional airlines, and the growing pilot shortage, regional air carriers and pilots alike lack proper understanding how pilot commutes by airplane affect satisfaction with life. There are numerous studies on how commuting by vehicle, bicycle, mass transit system, or walking (traditional commute) to and from work affects one’s satisfaction with life. There are no identified studies which investigate regional airline pilots’ commute by airplane and its affect on satisfaction with life.

The purpose of this study was to gain knowledge on regional airline pilot commutes, how commuting affects regional pilots’ satisfaction with life, and to explore why regional airline pilots choose to commute. This study used both qualitative and quantitative measures to accomplish this task by imploring a mixed methods exploratory sequential design. The two research questions were what is the variation in the Satisfaction With Life Scale scores between different groups of regional pilots and what aspects of pilot commuting are related to traditional commuting?

This study used previous related research and regional airline pilot qualitative interviews to build a quantitative survey to measure satisfaction with life. The survey was distributed to a large regional airline to get a representative pilot population sample response. Statistical analysis was conducted on the responses which looked for significance between different groups of regional airline pilots.

Results from a t-test indicated that there is a significant difference in Satisfaction With Life Scores for regional pilots that are able to traditionally commute to their domicile vs. regional pilots who commute by airplane to their domicile. Further t-test results indicated that there is a significant difference in satisfaction with life for airplane commute captains vs. traditional commute captains, and airplane commute captains vs. traditional commute first officers. When only airplane commute pilots were analyzed, there are significant differences in satisfaction with life for pilots that commute over 43.33 hours a month (equivalent to one hour, one way traditional commute), and a one way airplane commute of two or more legs. A Between-Groups ANOVA indicated that commuting the day before a trip begins and commuting the day after a trip ends (un-commutable trip) produces a less satisfied pilot compared to trips that are commutable at the beginning, end or both ends.

Nowadays we cannot imagine our life without air transportations. Transportation plays a huge role not only in everyday life, but also in the formation of the economy and gross domestic product both domestically and internationally. Air transportation is the carriage of passengers, mail, load and freight by aircraft and helicopters and all types of air transportations are classified according to the territorial sign, to objects of transportation and to direction of transportation. Air transport entered our life like no other and was able to bring dreams into reality by the safety, comfort and speed. In 2020, aviation faced problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic, which made adjustments to the plans of all airlines around the world. That is why the main goal of this work is to analyze how the pandemic influenced two of the best airline around the world – Lufthansa. Leader, Joseph Paul. "The Adoption and Diffusion of the Air Taxi/Air Charter Travel Innovation". ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5366.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The inefficient use and knowledge of direct, on-demand air taxi/air charter flights in the United States was the topic of this dissertation. The general problem studied was the inefficient use of air transportation options by business travelers in the United States. The specific problem was how business travelers in the United States learn of and thereby elect to embrace a newer air travel option. Using Rogers's diffusion of innovations theory as the framework, the dissemination of air travel choices made by business travelers using ImagineAir air taxi service in the United States was explored via a qualitative case study research design methodology. Thirty-five semistructured interviews and matching customer database information provided data for the study, Data were later analyzed for emergent themes and codes using MAXQDA software. Key research questions included communication of the innovation, business travelers' perceptions of the innovation, timeframe of innovation adoption, business environment enabling the innovation adoption, and the Rogers self-described adopter type. The results showed that compatibility, relative advantage, risk, and complexity influence the perception of business travelers about air taxi services. Based on the research, the course of action suggests that business travelers will most rapidly embrace air taxi service via internet dissemination of this new option. With continued success in dissemination, positive social change will come in the form of efficiencies as business travelers use more than 5,000 virtually idle airports and over 7,000 on-demand air taxi aircraft as highlighted by U.S. government studies further bolstered by this research.

Abstract (sommario):
The 1980s can easily be qualified as the most important decade in the history of Canadian commercial aviation as it was witness to two important phenomena. To begin with, after six decades of stringent regulation and control, the State finally realized that international trends and domestic needs dictated a drastic reduction in the role it played in the economic affairs of its airlines. Airline deregulation thus became a reality in Canada and as such, a detailed review of the process leading to the adoption of the National Transportation Act, 1987, as well as an extensive legal analysis of the legislation itself are warranted.
The second major development was the extremely rapid process of consolidation, precipitated mainly by deregulation, into an industry dominated by two airlines; a duopoly. The implications arising from this situation for present and future competition in the Canadian air transport industry, as viewed from a market contestability perspective, need to be assessed.

Abstract (sommario):
The air transportation system has grown significantly during the past few decades. The demand for air travel has increased tremendously as compared to the increase in the supply. The air transportation system can be divided into four subsystems: airports, airlines, air traffic control, and passengers, each of them having different interests. These subsystems interact in a very complex way resulting in various phenomena. On the airport side, there is excessive flight demand during the peak hours that frequently exceeds the airport capacity resulting in serious flight delays. These delays incur costs to the airport, passengers, and airlines. The air traffic pattern is also affected by the characteristics of the air transportation network. The current network structure of most major airlines in United States is a hub-and-spoke network. The airports are interested in reducing congestion, especially during the peak time. The airlines act as direct demand to the airport and as the supplier to the passengers. They sometimes compete with other airlines on certain routes and sometimes they collaborate to maximize revenue. The flight schedule of airlines directly affects the travel demand. The flight schedule that minimizes the schedule delay of passengers in directed and connected flights will attract more passengers. The important factors affecting the airline revenue include ticket price, departure times, frequency, and aircraft type operated on each route. The revenue generated from airline depends also on the behavior of competing airlines, and their flight schedules. The passengers choose their flight based on preferred departure times, offered ticket prices, and willingness of airlines to minimize delay and cost. Hence, all subsystems of air transportation system are inter-connected to each other, meaning, strategy of each subsystem directly affects the performance of other subsystems. This interaction between the subsystems makes it more difficult to analyze the air transportation system. Traditionally, analytical top-down approach has been used to analyze the air transportation problem. In top-down approach, a set of objectives is defined and each subsystem is fixed in the overall scheme. On the other hand, in a bottom-up approach, many issues are addressed simultaneously and each individual system has greater autonomy to make decisions, communicate and to interact with one another to achieve their goals when considering complex air transportation system. Therefore, it seems more appropriate to approach the complex air traffic congestion and airline competition problems using a bottom-up approach. In this research, an agent-based model for the air transportation system has been developed. The developed model considers each subsystem as an independent type of agent that acts based on its local knowledge and its interaction with other agents. The focus of this research is to analyze air traffic congestion and airline competition in a hub-and-spoke network. The simulation model developed is based on evolutionary computation. It seems that the only way for analyzing emergent phenomenon (such as air traffic congestion) is through the development of simulation models that can simulate the behavior of each agent. In the agent-based model developed in this research, agents that represent airports can increase capacity or significantly change landing fee policy, while the agents that represent airlines learn all the time, change their markets, fare structure, flight frequencies, and flight schedules. Such a bottom-up approach facilitates a better understanding of the complex nature of congestion and gains more insights into the competition in air transportation, hence making it easier to understand, predict and control the overall performance of the complex air transportation system.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines problems related to particular labor laws currently applied in international air transport. This analysis is framed within the context of scholarly theory and judicial practice arising from various regimes of labor law governing industrial injury, the individual contract of employment, labor-management relations, and fair treatment in the civil aviation industry.
A critical survey of labor regulations operating in the international air transport industry is provided through commentary on the principles formulated by judicial decisions and the theories which underlie their reasoning, helping to clarify both substantive and procedural labor laws affecting international air transport.
A critical analysis of different categories of statutory labor law governing international air transport is also provided to assess the validity of commonly-erected conflict of labor law rules, thereby revealing the inadequacy of the single rule principle in view of the unique and perplexing regulatory interests which are inherent in aviation activity. The divergence between domestic labor statutes and Treaties of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation or bilateral air transport agreements also adds a more subtle aspect to the problems explored.

Abstract (sommario):
Risk became popular among management theorists, with many proposing ways to manage all sorts of risks. Some countries require corporations to implement risk management as stand-alone or even integrated element within improved internal control frameworks. As result, several national standards were developed over the last 20 years, but just one arose as truly international solution: ISO 31000. Little has been published on integrated risk management at airlines and the use of industry-wide standards has never been consistently explored before. Two industry-specific standards exist, but their limited scope led to little adherence by airlines. To cover this gap, this thesis analysed the wider picture of integrated airline risk management practices, aiming at identifying improvement areas to propose an adaptation of the ISO 31000 risk management framework. Several empirical methods (including a survey to publications by the ToplOO airlines, and interviews to airline risk managers, experts and practitioners) showed that only six airlines reported using ISO 31000, with two others citing its predecessor, AS/NZS 4360. Many vaguely referred to COSO, customised models or didn't mention any framework. It is unclear why only few airlines use ISO 31000, when other industries applied it successfully before. Therefore, to help disseminating ISO 31000 among airlines, a customised framework has been designed that proposes a truly holistic industry-specific approach, not focussing on individual risk sources. It integrates risk management along the airlines' entire value chain and involves relevant stakeholders in the airlines' internal risk management efforts. The proposal's validation process showed that, while being ambitious in its goals, the customised framework is complete and concise, providing valuable input for airlines using other risk management models. It has been considered particularly suitable for those airlines thinking of launching risk management initiatives. Given that a fundamental culture change is needed, the timeframe for implementation should be generous, allowing for several process iterations and revisions.

Mumbower, Stacey M. "Extracting airline and passenger behavior from online distribution channels: applications using online pricing and seat map data". Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/49110.

Abstract (sommario):
Although the airline industry has drastically changed since its deregulation in 1978, publically available sources of data have remained nearly the same. In the U.S., most researchers and decision-makers rely on government data that contains highly aggregated price information (e.g., average quarterly prices). However, aggregate data can hide important market behavior. With the emergence of online distribution channels, there is a new opportunity to model air travel demand using detailed price information. This dissertation uses online prices and seat maps to build a dataset of daily prices and bookings at the flight-level. Several research contributions are made, all related to leveraging online data to better understand airline pricing and product strategies, and how these strategies impact customers, as well as the industry in general. One major contribution is the finding that the recent product debundling trend in the U.S. airline industry has diluted revenues to the U.S. Airport and Airways Trust Fund by at least five percent. Additionally, several new behavioral insights are found for one debundling trend that has been widely adopted by U.S. airlines: seat reservation fees. Customers are found to be between 2 and 3.3 times more likely to purchase premium coach seats (with extra legroom and early boarding privileges) when there are no regular coach window or aisle seats that can be reserved for free, suggesting that the ability of airlines to charge seat fees is strongly tied to load factors. Model results are used to explore optimal seat fees and find that an optimal static fee could increase revenues by 8 percent, whereas optimal dynamic fees could increase revenues by 10.2 percent. Another major contribution is in modeling daily bookings and estimating price elasticities using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression without correcting for price endogeneity and two-stage least squares (2SLS) regression, which corrects for endogeneity. Results highlight the importance of correcting for price endogeneity (which is not often done in air travel applications). In particular, models that do not correct for endogeneity find inelastic demand estimates whereas models that do correct for endogeneity find elastic demand estimates. This is important, as pricing recommendations differ for inelastic and elastic models. A set of instrumental variables are found to pass validity tests and can be used to correct for price endogeneity in future models of daily flight-level demand.

Abstract (sommario):
O problema, no entanto, é NP-Difícil.
This master of science research treats the Crew Scheduling Problem (CSP), as part of the airlines operational planning. The main aim of the CSP is to assign a set of tasks to crew members, considering the labor regulations, safety rules and policies of companies, such that the crew cost is minimal. The CSP is divided into two subproblems, solved sequentially: Crew Pairing Problem (CPP) and Crew Rostering Problem (CRP). First, CPP provides a set of pairings that covers all the planned flights. Then, in the CRP, the rosters, encompassing the pairings and other activities such as rest periods, alert duties, reserve duties, training times and vacations, are assigned to the crew members. This decomposition is justified by the combinatorial nature of the CSP, but it not incorporates the crew members availabilities and preferences in both subproblems (CPP and CRP), generating extra costs related to conflicts that arise during the assignment of rosters to the crew members in the CRP. Besides, the costs estimations adopted in the CPP does not have a global character, since the real cost of the global schedule can be only obtained after the assignment of the rosters. The state of the art involves the integrated solution of CSP, where the CPP does not need to be solved, thus providing a better estimated cost and a better schedule quality, considering crew costs and also crew members availabilities and preferences globally. The problem, however, is NP-Hard. Therefore, the methodology proposed in this master of science research aims to obtain an integrated solution of the CSP, through an hybrid algorithm genetic associated with a depth-first search procedure, taking into account the Brazilian legislation. The methodology was tested, with success, to solve instances related a real network of a Brazilian airline.

Abstract (sommario):
This doctoral research treats the Crew Scheduling Problem (CSP), as part of the airlines operational planning. The CSP consists of optimally assigning the required crew members to planned flights, in such a way that it minimizes the total cost of the aircrew, taking into consideration the proper legislation and the satisfaction of the crew members. The CSP is usually divided into two independent subproblems, modeled and solved sequentially: Crew Pairing Problem (CPP) and Crew Rostering Problem (CRP). This decomposition does not incorporate all the crew members attributes (availability, qualification, seniority and individual preferences), which does not lead to a real cost estimate and affects the quality of the final solution. The state of the art involves the integrated solution of CSP, without solving the CPP at first and providing a more realistic solution. The CSP, however, has a combinatorial nature. This research proposes and explores models based on integer linear programming and on heuristics to solve the CSP in an integrated way. These heuristics incorporate GRASP metaheuristic, Clarke and Wright savings heuristic and day-by-day heuristic. The models were successfully tested to solve instances related to the networks of three Brazilian airlines.

Abstract (sommario):
On-demand air transportation is a recent trend in the airline industry. It allows the customer to call in days or even hours before to book a ight. Therefore, the scheduling and planning of this type of airline needs to be done daily. Hence, a successful on-demand air transportation requires an e cient ight scheduling system to construct the optimal daily ight schedules. An on-demand air transportation ight scheduling problem that arose in a Southern African industry has been studied. A new solution methodology is proposed. A number of new heuristics are used to combine ight legs for a robust solution. A time-space multi-commodity network is introduced to derive the mathematical model which is then solved using CPLEX. The results obtained are then compared with known results showing much more e cient performances and saving for the industry.

The development of aviation in the 20th century presented a new mode of transportation within South Africa. Soon it was recognised that air transportation would play an important role in the development of South Africa, as the country was ideally suited to it due to favourable weather conditions and relatively long distances between larger community settlements. Air transportation also presented a new form of competition to an existing mode of transport - railways. The interest of the public in air transportation was soon recognised and control applied in various forms. These included legislation, regulations, conditions to licenses as well as contractual provisions of agreements. Two forms of control over air transport developed, namely: air navigational (or technical and operational) aspects; and economical / commercial aspects.

Rapid rise of LCCs in world regional aviation market , has become a hot topic in academia and industry. Lccs started late in Asia , but it developed rapidly in recent years. The most prevalence of LCCs is in Southeast Asia area and the most potential is Northeast Asia. Enormous opportunities attract Nationality Airlines to join LCCs. According to related literature, the passenger load factor, economic development and global oil prices are the major factors affecting the aviation industry operations. But few literature consider the rise of LCCs . Therefore, this study observe the actual industry dynamics, try to analyze lccs have impact on nationality airlines business. Limited to the integrity of the data obtained, so as to China Airlines, EVA Airways and TransAsia Airways as the main research subject. Firstly, this study used PESTEL analysis to understand the important factors that affect the Taiwan's Air passenger transportation market, then used multiple regression analysis to understand the LCCs market share, the nationality aviation passenger load factor, the national income change rate , the global oil prices change rate, how they affect the the nationality traditional airlines market share and revenue. This study found that passenger load factor and economic growth will help improve national aviation revenue. The most important variables which affect the nationality airlines business is Lccs market share, highlighting its importance. In the three nationality traditional airlines, EVA Air has a minimal impact by LCCs. It's worth noting that global oil prices in delay of three months has largest impact for nationality aviation. Results of this study echoes the practice on aviation industry generally take oil hedging strategy. Overall, the results of this study can provide a reference when the government and the airline industry formulating policies.

Air cargo transportation plays an important role in the growth of world economic. Although encountering many difficulties in economic crisis, many experts predict that Vietnam is one of air cargo industries that have the highest growth rate in the world. In the recently years, contribution of Vietnam Airlines cargo department is higher estimate in the development of Vietnam Airlines in middle region. In the study, SERVQUAL model (Parasuraman, Zeithaml, and Berry, 1985) is applied to evaluate the level of customer satisfaction toward air cargo transportation in Vietnam Airlines-Middle regional office. The data of this research was collected from survey method that uses non-probability convenience sampling technique. The survey was conducted 220 officers of forwarders and personal customers operating in Da Nang for two months. The purpose of this study is determining service quality components that have effect on customer satisfaction and evaluating customer satisfaction toward service quality of air transportation in Vietnam Airlines-Middle regional office. Cronbach’s alpha, Exploratory Factor Analysis EFA, Regression and correlation, Oneway-ANOVA analysis was applied for this purpose. The findings have not only academic implications for filling the gap in the literature review about service quality attributes in air cargo transportation but also managerial implications for strategic plan which service quality components Vietnam Airlines cargo should focus on to improve service quality of air cargo transportation.

Abstract (sommario):
The United States as a whole is embarking on the historic task of implementing high-speed rail (HSR) throughout the country in an attempt to improve regional mobility, including congestion at some of the nation’s busiest airports. However, despite the wide overlapping of service that both air and HSR provide and the goal of reducing airport congestion, little discourse has occurred on the topic of how these two modes might interact in an intermodal context. This report explores how air travel and HSR might cooperate in the US, which is defined as an explicit attempt by the two modes to utilize each other in order to transport a passenger to their final destination. It will document potential benefits of cooperation, survey how cooperation works elsewhere in the world, and investigate the current climate within the US for cooperation, including a review of current HSR plans and analysis of air travel data. This information will form the basis for suggested airports for the integration of HSR and air travel, and for how US airlines might utilize HSR. Lastly, lessons learned will form a list of best practices to follow in order to better insure a cooperative and successful relationship between HSR and air travel.

Pinho, Bernardo Almeida. "The global airline industry: an assessment of the impact of low-cost carriers on the technical efficiency of full-service airlines". Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/15785.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Since the emergence of the first low-fare airline, Southwest Airlines, we have witnessed the spread of the low-cost phenomenon in different regions of the world. The simplicity, the low fares and the focus on core business (flying) have been the critical basis for their success, and the concern of traditional operators who see their market positioning threatened. To remain competitive, full-service operators have been forced to redefine their business model. With great interest in the innovative nature of low-cost carriers, literature has covered inter-business model comparisons of efficiency, as well as on the analysis of the strategies carried out by full-service to adapting to the increased competition. However, there seems to be no study on the impact of low-cost operators on the technical efficiency of full-service airlines. Thus, this thesis aims to analyse the impact of the low-cost regional market share on the technical efficiency of full-service airlines domiciled in the same region. In order to pursue this analysis, a two-stage Data Envelopment Analysis was implemented. Initially, bootstrapped efficiency scores were estimated for a set of 137 passenger airlines. Subsequently, the estimated efficiency measures were used as a dependent variable in a truncated bootstrap regression to identify the determinants of the technical efficiency. Results suggest that larger low-cost market shares are associated with lower input uses for the same full-service carriers’ output levels based on that region. This relationship might be explained by the adoption of better management practices that approach the full-service model to the low-cost model.

Taiwan is surrounded by the sea, and its economic development is depended on international trade. After the financial crisis in 2008, the global economic downturn and the expansion and deepening, airlines also face the difficult aspect, for continuing to operate forever, the promotion - “the service quality” is the most important topic. Especially, high tech, high price and urgent cargo are forwarded by air. So, air cargo compared with marine transportation is stricter in the demand conditions. The service quality of air cargo is also relatively important for the customers. The main purpose of this paper is applying Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to survey the service quality of airline cargo transportation. Our survey based on Parasuraman, Zeithaml and Berry (1985) Service Quality Model, collecting cargo forwarder’s expect service quality and perceived service quality by questionnaire. In the meantime, we use a case study of EVA AIR. Firstly, applying Factor Analysis to identify the key factors, the five demand constructs of service quality for customers are “professional ability “, ”physical service”, “accurate and reliable”, “rapid and convenient”, “communication and understanding”, then getting the first three priorities of improvable items are “providing sufficient space”, “reasonably and rapidly to solve when cargo irregularity occurred”, “rapid confirmation of cargo space ”. The technique constructs of service quality for service providers are then examined from the service quality of airline cargo. Finally, applying QFD to combine the outside of customer’s voice and the inside of quality technique to find the five policy priorities for improving the service quality are “cargo loading and offloading”, “operational assessment and planning”, “cargo reservation”, “cargo damage processing”, “space arrangement”. The results could provide practical information for airlines to improve their service quality and to set up operation policy of the customer.

Abstract (sommario):
Route planning forms an important aspect of airline operations for them to sustain the effects of deregulation and fierce competition. The Indian economic liberalization in 1991 has seen diminishing monopoly of Air India and dynamic demand splits amongst the service providers. Our research focuses on developing an aggregate route traffic demand forecasting (RTDF) model specifically for international carriers operating from India. The model is an econometric model that combines concepts of the traditional Gravity model of Physics and the Micro-economic theoretic model that links demand to price. In other words, the RTDF model is a fusion of the behavioral and gravity models. While developing the model, Becker’s approach of utility maximization has been made use of, thereby combining time and other inputs required to produce travel. The model is developed for the existing international routes from India with 2005 aggregative data provided by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which spanned 15 countries in Europe, Asia, Canada, and North America. The model has been validated and tested for its predictive power on a few intentionally left out routes from the original sample. The model explains about 70% of the variance, which is well above the acceptable zone for cross-sectional data. The model is then estimated for 2007 data on a few randomly selected high demand routes; the prediction error ranging from a minimum of 3.5% to a maximum of 13%, a range well within the acceptable error limits. We derive a sector-cost-model (SCM) by applying the concept of break-even analysis on the RTDF model. The SCM provides cost estimates on a particular route at various levels of airfare. The SCM helps us gain further insights into the business nature prevailing in the airline sector. On the viability of operations, we propose the sector-operation-fare (SOF) to be charged on a respective route, given the load factor, if the airline wishes to continue operations. For arriving at the SOF, we follow a demand oriented framework that comprises of two demand curves: the airline curve and the traffic curve. The numerical analyses provide room for policy formulations that help airlines in refining, redefining, and revitalizing the decision-making process in their operations. Airlines can use this model to forecast demand for a newly contemplated route and obtain a fair idea of the price they can charge the customer. In other words, airlines can estimate the economic viability of operations on a respective route.

Abstract (sommario):
For an airline company it’s crucial to make decisions that lead them to success. Within this decision, the construction of its network stands out as one of the most important. The formulation of a strategic plan that defines which markets to serve and the correspondent frequencies with which they will be served are the basis of an initial planning of any airline. This dissertation will propose an optimization tool which supports airline’s decisions on its network and correspondent flight frequency, using data such as passenger demand and existing fleet. Firstly, the fleet will be fixed and then the fleet will be increased so that some conclusions can be drawn. It will be presented a set of destinations that already belong to the airline route network, followed by the proposed expansion of new possible markets to serve. The results show that some markets that are currently being served are not profitable and some of which may be removed from the network. On the other hand, the model suggests some profitable new destinations, as options to be included on the route network. This study was based on the European network of the Portuguese airline TAP but focused mainly on European capitals and other key markets for the company....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Abstract (sommario):
The delay is a crucial performance indicator of any transportation system, and flight delays cause financial and economic consequences to passengers and airlines. Hence, recognizing them through prediction may improve marketing decisions. The goal is to use machine learning techniques to predict an aviation challenge: flight delay above 15 minutes on departure of a private airline. Business and data understanding of this particular segment of aviation are revised against literature revision, and data preparation, modelling and evaluation are addressed to lead towards a model that may contribute as support for decision-making in a private aviation environment. The results show us which algorithms performed better and what variables contribute the most for the model, thereafter delay on departure.
