Abstract (sommario):
Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most important technologies of the future (Crew, 2020). So far, however, AI has been insufficiently deployed. This applies not only to family businesses, but especially to them. In terms of decision-making, these companies have a number of specific characteristics which mean that they find AI less relevant and may also be skeptical. The article discusses specifics of AI use in family businesses on the basis of a German empirical study. The paper shows that family businesses use AI less frequently and are also less open to the technology than non-family businesses. Socioemotional wealth (SEW) (Gómez-Mejia et al., 2007) serves as the theoretical basis. Based on the SEW, it is argued that although family businesses are aware of the need to apply new theories, they have so far underestimated the potentials and tend to be rather skeptical about applying these technologies. This view is supported by the empirical study. In addition, some differences between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large companies are also discussed in the paper.

Abstract (sommario):
Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by enamel defects. The authors have identified a large consanguineous Moroccan family segregating different clinical subtypes of hypoplastic and hypomineralized AI in different individuals within the family. Using targeted next-generation sequencing, the authors identified a novel heterozygous nonsense mutation in COL17A1 (c.1873C>T, p.R625*) segregating with hypoplastic AI and a novel homozygous 8-bp deletion in C4orf26 (c.39_46del, p.Cys14Glyfs*18) segregating with hypomineralized-hypoplastic AI in this family. This study highlights the phenotypic and genotypic heterogeneity of AI that can exist even within a single consanguineous family. Furthermore, the identification of novel mutations in COL17A1 and C4orf26 and their correlation with distinct AI phenotypes can contribute to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of AI and the contribution of these genes to amelogenesis.

Abstract (sommario):
The article notes that each culture has its own «normative» model of the family, characterized by its defining parameters. These parameters reflect different indicators – descriptors – as attributes that determine the corresponding value and behavior in society. The types of family relationships identified by humanitarian science are revealed. It is proved that in a retrospective of the historical development of mankind, the relationships not only of the family and society, but also of the family and the individual changed, which depended on many factors. The article analyzes the negative trends of marriage and family relations, it is noted that along with the form of actual (civil) marriage, there is a tendency to the appearance of a large number of other forms of marriage unions: guest, concubinate, open marriage, business marriage, fictitious, creative union, polygyny, group marriage, same-sex cohabitation, virtual marriage (web-marriage), etc. This trend leads to a change in the content of the phenomenon of marriage, the adoption of actual marriage as a social norm. It is noted that today the semantic attitudes of a person are deformed and the concepts of the purpose and values of life are distorted, there is a noticeable turn of mass consciousness from the collectivist values of the family to the individual values of the person, which to a certain extent disorganizes both family life and social relations. It is noted that according to the results of the study, the authors of this article developed an educational module "Modern Family" for students of a different professional fields.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes interaction of spouses in overcoming financial stress. An online survey of 136 married couples was conducted during the lockdown caused by the spread of COVID-19 accompanied by family income losses. Frequency and severity of discussions on financial topics; level of subjective economic well-being, activity of coping strategies, family cohesion and adaptation were measured. Results showed that the discussion of financial topics is a stressor for married couples, accompanied by contradictions and conflicts, but ultimately helps to improve quality of relations between spouses, and also increases the adaptability of the family system in a situation of socio-economic crisis. Subjects of conflicts were defined. Influence of gender roles on financial consciousness and behavior was shown. Wives are more likely to initiate discussions on economic topics and more inclined to economic anxiety, while husbands showed economic optimism. The severity of financial stress correlates with assessments of family cohesion. Correlations between financial well-being and coping behavior of husbands and wives represent the family as an entire open system. Partners are interdependent in overcoming financial stress. Collective family coping is determined by individual reactions of spouses. The efforts of partners can be congruent and complementary.

Abstract (sommario):
While a family faces a test of its own resilience on one side, the most vulnerable member – at the same time the strongest – often shows behavioral symptoms on the other side by sending distress signals that “somewhere” something is not working. If this is a child and a student, then they will surely not benefit from the linear approach of institutional support, in which they are labeled for their behavior as an individual who needs to change and adapt to the rules (of the school). The cause lies in the sub-layer of symptoms that the education staff, primarily an expert associate, understand with the help of other members of the family system. They will then try to intensify communication and mutual understanding of common goals. The aim of the research was to examine the challenges and strengths faced by families from the perspective of expert associates using descriptive, causal and assessment methods. Explication of the findings based on the SCORE-15 instrument, in this paper, we examine the quality of support from the perspective of expert associates who, observing the family, confirm the linearity of their own approach, but also the challenge of a family that does not accept changes, yet urgently needs help. The results confirm that in more than 50% of cases the observed families apply a pattern of behavior aimed at preserving traditional values (morphostasis) while resisting to accept change coming from younger generations (morphogenesis) and “without trust and family cohesion, have challenges in balancing functional relationships within the family system”. Also, that expert associates encounter difficulties in the application of the system paradigm and that the linear approach prevails in the work. As for institutional support, with an emphasis on the school system, the findings confirm linearly based actions in the direction of treating the manifestations of the observed symptoms, but not the causes that had led to challenges in children’s behavior, which ultimately leads to dissatisfaction with their own work as expert associates. Judging from the results which represent families that possess values such as nurturing truth, courage and personal resources they use to overcome problems, where protecting the youngest – children – is the number one priority, we can see there is room for establishing partnerships. The expert associates confirmed the systemic perspective when it comes to hoping that the family can cope with developmental challenges.

Fouvaa, Papaaliitele Moeimanono. "O le a le matafaioi o le fono a le aiga ma le fono a le lotu i le fa'atumau ai o le gagana Samoa i Niu Sila? = What is the role of family fono and church fono in the maintenance of Samoan language in New Zealand?" Thesis, University of Auckland, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/19400.

Abstract (sommario):
Language maintenance is becoming a worldwide issue; particularly the decline of minority languages including Pasifika (Pacific) languages. One of the Pasifika languages known to be declining is the Samoan language. The purpose of the study was to examine ways to maintain the Samoan language in New Zealand. This study used the concept of fono a le nu'u (village fono in Samoa) to examine strategies and practices associated with it as it is reconfigured in the New Zealand context in the family fono and church fono. Data were gathered from two churches and their congregations through questionnaires, interviews and observations. The questionnaire responses were analysed according to the participants' responses and their description of fono properties. The interview responses were analysed using the same process and properties of fono as vehicles for language socialisation. The observations were analysed based on the interactions in Sunday schools and in homes. This included direct teaching and recitation. The results from the questionnaires show that participants' views on the understanding of fono are based on three core properties. The first core property is sharing views in order to come to consensus over the decision making. The next core property is building unity within the fono. This occurs when the community is united in order to make effective decisions. The third core property is being responsible by giving and receiving guidance. This is to offer advice and to guide people on using the language and processes of performing a task. The findings from the interviews showed that the respondents had built on the core properties by describing these properties (in the questionnaires) as vehicles for language socialisation. For example, the core property of sharing of views, when done openly and interactively, effectively encouraged young people to use their language. In addition, it provided advice on how they should achieve their educational goals. The observations in the Sunday schools and in the homes illustrated that there were two pedagogical forms which are related to language socialisation. These were direct teaching and modelling, and recitation of tauloto. The direct teaching occurred when students are asked to perform the tasks, including the learning of their tauloto. In summary, the core properties of fono revealed the true nature of what fono is in its real sense and in relation to the cultural setting. In addition, the importance of these core properties as vehicles for language socialisation, it is argued, can enhance language learning of young people in particular, and for Samoans in general. They should be utilised in order to maintain their language.

Almahmoud, Nouha. "Time as transition : experiences of time, culture and immigration amongst Syrian women in the UK". Thesis, University of Essex, 2016. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/16982/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study contributes to the current literature on time, gender, migration, culture and identity by bringing insights into how time is perceived and experienced by Syrian women who are settled and working in the UK. It is a topic that is little known in the extant literature, and that differs in its dynamics form the western literature. The notion of time has been widely debated but with little reference to its impact on the perceptions and individual experiences of migrant women, who engage with culturally different time structures and different time schedules. The spatial experiences of those women represented by their mobility across cultural boundaries seem to be affecting how migrant women perceive and organise time. Throughout the study, the Heideggerian interpretive phenomenological perspective has been adopted to make sense of and interpret the meanings and experiences provided by the participants of this study. This has been selected to allow space for considering and acknowledging the impact of the personal experience and prior knowledge of both the researcher and the researched subjects. Perceptions of time and time experiences have been found to be much diversified across personal, social and cultural contexts which are marked by spatial or geographical boundaries. Also, time structures and time schedules have been institutionally gendered across the cultures of both countries: Syria and the UK, but with varying degrees. Empirically, this study can help work organisations and agencies interested in working with migrant people to understand the diversity of perceptions and experiences of migrant female workers in the UK to enable them offering the care and services tailored to the needs of those migrants. In doing so, this research is hoped to improve the quality of work and social contributions of migrant women in the UK. Methodologically, this phenomenological inquiry contributes to the field of empirical and socio-political knowledge as well as the understanding of moral, aesthetic, and personal welfare debated in the migration literature. It contributes to the understanding of human experiences in relation to the notion of time, in isolation of any concern to predicting or prescribing any theory.

Stensrud, Brian. "FAMTILE: AN ALGORITHM FOR LEARNING HIGH-LEVEL TACTICAL BEHAVIOR FROM OBSERVATION". Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2005. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3102.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This research focuses on the learning of a class of behaviors defined as high-level behaviors. High-level behaviors are defined here as behaviors that can be executed using a sequence of identifiable behaviors. Represented by low-level contexts, these behaviors are known a priori to learning and can be modeled separately by a knowledge engineer. The learning task, which is achieved by observing an expert within simulation, then becomes the identification and representation of the low-level context sequence executed by the expert. To learn this sequence, this research proposes FAMTILE - the Fuzzy ARTMAP / Template-Based Interpretation Learning Engine. This algorithm attempts to achieve this learning task by constructing rules that govern the low-level context transitions made by the expert. By combining these rules with models for these low-level context behaviors, it is hypothesized that an intelligent model for the expert can be created that can adequately model his behavior. To evaluate FAMTILE, four testing scenarios were developed that attempt to achieve three distinct evaluation goals: assessing the learning capabilities of Fuzzy ARTMAP, evaluating the ability of FAMTILE to correctly predict expert actions and context choices given an observation, and creating a model of the expert's behavior that can perform the high-level task at a comparable level of proficiency.

Because of the changing of the social environment, extended family has gradually transformed to various family types. Grandparenting has been the phenomenon that needs to explore. The purpose of this study was to understand the correlation between grandparenting indigenous family and its life satisfaction. A qualitative questionnaire survey was conducted. Data from three dimensions, personal attitudes, family involvement, and social participation, were collected from resident at Jen Ai Township, Nantou County. A total of 296 effective questionnaires were gathered and examined by descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffle post hoc analysis. Results showed that (1) the satisfaction degree of the grandparenting indigenous family in Jen Ai Township is positive. The order of the high satisfaction degree ranged from family involvement, social participation, to personal attitudes respectively; (2) in terms of social participation, female’s life satisfaction was higher than male’s; (3) regarding personal attitudes, family involvement, and social participation, ages above 65 had the highest life satisfaction; (4) concerning social participation, financial status from 10001 to 15000 NTD showed difference; (5) personal attitudes, family involvement, and social participation of the grandparenting families indicated significance which explains their positive and affirmative life satisfaction. Lastly, this study proposed some suggestions to grandparenting grandparents, educational units, social organizations and our government in laying the groundwork for the related researchers. It is anticipated that life satisfaction of the grandparenting indigenous family may be more positive in the future. Keywords: Indigenous people, Grandparenting, Life satisfaction

Abstract (sommario):
Palazzo Colonna is one of the greatest and most ancient building in Rome. During the 18th century it was completely remodelled under the patronage of Constable Fabrizio IV Colonna and his brother Cardinal Girolamo II, who also contributed to increase the traditional artistic collections of the family. To realise the new construction architects such as Nicola Michetti, Nicola Salvi and Paolo Posi were called, among the most important artists in the Papal Court. The remodelling also implied a new project for the ancient Colonna Garden at the slopes of the Quirinal hill, together with the reutilization of the ruins of the Temple of Serapis. Before his untimely death, Cardinal Girolamo began the construction of his suburban residence, near via Nomentana, that would become "Villa Torlonia" a century later.

Cruz, Francisca Duarte Alves da. "Envolvimento dos pais na educação: Impacto a médio prazo do programa Anos Incríveis-TCM na transição para o 1º ciclo". Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10316/84144.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Psicologia apresentada à Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação
Framework: Family is the closest relational context to an individual, as well as his first collective experience, and has a determinant role on the children’s integration to a new school context. The search for a more equitable and effective relationship between school and family entails a greater participation/involvement from parents and those in charge of the child’s education on the school system’s life and, therefore, programs for teachers, such as the Incredible Years - Teacher Classroom Management (IY-TCM) can promote a collaborative relationship between school and family. Goals: To understand, from the parents and teachers’ perspectives, the impact of the Incredible Years program - Teacher Classroom Management (IY-TCM), applied to preschool teachers during the children’s last year of preschool, on the involvement of parents by the time children progress to the 1st grade. Methods: 210 children whose parents and teachers completed the Parental Involvement Questionnaires – teachers’ version and parents’ version – participated in the study. Results: According to the teachers’ perspective, parents of the experimental group were the most involved on their children’s education, while the relationship they perceived to have with parents was better with those in the control group. Questionnaires completed by parents didn’t reveal statistically significant differences between the two groups under study in any of the scales. Discussion and conclusions: In general, and considering the results, this study may represent a contribution in understanding the importance of implementing programs like the Incredible Years in several contexts: both at the school level (kindergarten teachers and 1st grade teachers) and at the family level (parents), given the value that parental involvement and a healthy relationship between school and family assume in the transition to the first grade.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractVoice assistants, such as Alexa, Siri or the Google Assistant have become a fixed component in the everyday life of many. However, their use gives rise to several questions in the context of data protection. This chapter provides an overview of the function of voice assistants and the international, European and national legal framework that regulates them. The focus lies on the implications of the use of voice assistants, especially when considering the right to privacy of children towards their parents, as a special case of horizontal effects of fundamental rights between private individuals. In the context of a possible future and existing state regulation, the right of parents to educate their children, as well as the fundamentally required restraint of the state in family matters must be taken into account. New legislation in the area of digital services and AI could help to improve the protection of personal data in this area in the future. Evaluations from other, at first glance similar, cases such as smart toys or dash cams, can only be transferred to a limited extent.

Abstract (sommario):
Family conflicts between parents and their children are nothing new and are something experienced by many in such situations [1]. These conflicts can even be exacerbated by cultural differences that exist between the two parties, especially in cases where the parents and child were raised in different countries, cultures and/or generations [2]. This description illustrates my personal experiences of conflict with my parents, which is what inspired me to create this app: The Problem Solver app. The app differs from other methods that could be applied to resolve these conflicts in that it facilitates more direct communication between the two conflicting parties, which would hopefully result in a more rapid and successful conflict resolution [3]. Naturally, there were challenges I faced in the making of the app, but I was eventually able to work through these and build a working product. I will also explore some related works and research into this topic that were helpful in supporting the idea that cultural differences between differently raised generations can have an impact on familial relations [4]. Then, I give a general overview of the system of the app and finally delve into possible limitations of the app and further steps I could take in the development of the app.

Abstract (sommario):
As many as three million school age children between the ages of 5 and 14 years, live with severe to profound hearing loss in Nigeria. Many of these Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) children developed their hearing loss later in life, non-congenitally, hence their parents are hearing. While their teachers in the Deaf schools they attend can often communicate effectively with them in "dialects" of American Sign Language (ASL), the unofficial sign lingua franca in Nigeria, communication at home with other family members is challenging and sometimes non-existent. This results in adverse social consequences including stigmatization, for the students. With the recent successes of AI in natural language understanding, the goal of automated sign language understanding is becoming more realistic using neural deep learning technologies. To this effect, the proposed project aims at co-designing and developing an ongoing AI-driven two-way sign language interpretation tool that can be deployed in homes, to improve language accessibility and communication between the DHH students and other family members. This ensures inclusive and equitable social interactions and can promote lifelong learning opportunities for them outside of the school environment.

Abstract (sommario):
We want to solve the problem that the elderly or heart patients will not miss the golden time for rescue in case of sudden death or emergency event at home. Therefore, this work proposes an intelligent vital sign monitoring robot based on Robotic Operating System (ROS). The heart rate is measured and monitored through the millimeter wave module. At the same time, the infrared thermal imager and the cloud database are combined with image recognition to detect the temperature of a person’s head, and the measured head temperature and heart rate data are regularly uploaded in combination with blockchain technology to establish a complete vital signs database. When the robot detects an unexpected situation, it uses IFTTT service to send a Line message notification to notify the family or the rescue unit as soon as possible to avoid more unfortunate accidents.

Abstract (sommario):
Individual loci affecting economic traits in dairy cattle (ETL) have been detected via linkage to genetic markers by application of the granddaughter design in the US population and the daughter design in the Israeli population. From these analyses it is not possible to determine allelic frequencies in the population at large, or whether the same alleles are segregating in different families. We proposed to answer this question by application of the "modified granddaughter design", in which granddaughters with a common maternal grandsire are both genotyped and analyzed for the economic traits. The objectives of the proposal were: 1) to fine map three segregating ETL previously detected by a daughter design analysis of the Israeli dairy cattle population; 2) to determine the effects of ETL alleles in different families relative to the population mean; 3) for each ETL, to determine the number of alleles and allele frequencies. The ETL on Bostaurusautosome (BT A) 6 chiefly affecting protein concentration was localized to a 4 cM chromosomal segment centered on the microsatellite BM143 by the daughter design. The modified granddaughter design was applied to a single family. The frequency of the allele increasing protein percent was estimated at 0.63+0.06. The hypothesis of equal allelic frequencies was rejected at p<0.05. Segregation of this ETL in the Israeli population was confirmed. The genes IBSP, SPP1, and LAP3 located adjacent to BM143 in the whole genome cattle- human comparative map were used as anchors for the human genome sequence and bovine BAC clones. Fifteen genes within 2 cM upstream of BM143 were located in the orthologous syntenic groups on HSA4q22 and HSA4p15. Only a single gene, SLIT2, was located within 2 cM downstream of BM143 in the orthologous HSA4p15 region. The order of these genes, as derived from physical mapping of BAC end sequences, was identical to the order within the orthologous syntenic groups on HSA4: FAM13A1, HERC3. CEB1, FLJ20637, PP2C-like, ABCG2, PKD2. SPP, MEP, IBSP, LAP3, EG1. KIAA1276, HCAPG, MLR1, BM143, and SLIT2. Four hundred and twenty AI bulls with genetic evaluations were genotyped for 12 SNPs identified in 10 of these genes, and for BM143. Seven SNPs displayed highly significant linkage disequilibrium effects on protein percentage (P<0.000l) with the greatest effect for SPP1. None of SNP genotypes for two sires heterozygous for the ETL, and six sires homozygous for the ETL completely corresponded to the causative mutation. The expression of SPP 1 and ABCG2 in the mammary gland corresponded to the lactation curve, as determined by microarray and QPCR assays, but not in the liver. Anti-sense SPP1 transgenic mice displayed abnormal mammary gland differentiation and milk secretion. Thus SPP 1 is a prime candidate gene for this ETL. We confirmed that DGAT1 is the ETL segregating on BTA 14 that chiefly effects fat concentration, and that the polymorphism is due to a missense mutation in an exon. Four hundred Israeli Holstein bulls were genotyped for this polymorphism, and the change in allelic frequency over the last 20 years was monitored.
