Abstract (sommario):
The effect of different doses of γ-radiation from a 137Cs source on photoluminescence of Ag-In-S nanocrystals covered with a shell of wider bandgap ZnS was investigated. The dynamics of changes in the nanocrystals photoluminescence depending on the dose of γ-radiation was shown. It was established that the AgInS2 / ZnS nanoparticles retain their photoluminescent properties and colloidal stability upon reaching the absorbed dose of 6 • 10^3 Gy (to water). Residual photoluminescence persisted when the absorbed dose reached 10^6 Gy. It was shown that AgInS2 / ZnS nanocrystals can be used in medical and biological studies in which increased resistance to gamma radiation is needed.

Abstract (sommario):
CuGaS2, (AgInS2)x–(ZnS)2−2x, Ag2ZnGeS4, Ni- or Pb-doped ZnS, (ZnS)0.9–(CuCl)0.1, and ZnGa0.5In1.5S4 showed activities for CO2 reduction to form CO and/or HCOOH in an aqueous solution containing K2SO3 and Na2S as electron donors under visible light irradiation. Among them, CuGaS2 and Ni-doped ZnS photocatalysts showed relatively high activities for CO and HCOOH formation, respectively. CuGaS2 was applied in a powdered Z-scheme system combining with reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-incorporated TiO2 as an O2-evolving photocatalyst. The powdered Z-scheme system produced CO from CO2 in addition to H2 and O2 due to water splitting. Oxygen evolution with an almost stoichiometric amount indicates that water was consumed as an electron donor in the Z-schematic CO2 reduction. Thus, we successfully demonstrated CO2 reduction of artificial photosynthesis using a simple Z-scheme system in which two kinds of photocatalyst powders (CuGaS2 and an RGO–TiO2 composite) were only dispersed in water under 1 atm of CO2.

Abstract (sommario):
Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) have been intensively developed for applications in photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, electroluminescent devices, and biological markers, due to their tunable light absorption and excellent light emission properties. Among them, group I-III-VI-based multinary semiconductor NCs, such as CuInS2, CuInSe2 and AgInS2, have received significant attention for the application to solar energy conversion systems because of their large absorption coefficient and low toxicity. Recently, we have successfully prepared ZnS-AgInS2 solid solution (ZAIS) NCs and optimized their photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production by tuning their chemical composition, size and particle morphology.1-3 The photocatalytic activity of ZAIS NCs was further enhanced by the formation of a dumbbell structure that had a type-II heterojunction at the interface between the tip and rod parts of the NCs.4 In this study, to further improve the photocatalytic activity of dumbbell-shaped ZAIS NCs, we attempted to tune the energy structure of the heterojunction by Cu doping in tip parts for effective charge separation. Rod-shaped ZAIS NCs with sizes of 4.0 × 23 nm were prepared by the previously reported method.3 The crystal growth of tip parts was carried out by heating a mixture of rod-shaped ZAIS NCs, Cu(OAc), Ag(OAc), In(OAc)3, and thiourea in an organic solvent, in which rod-shaped ZAIS NCs acted as a nucleus to form tip parts composed of (Cu y Ag(1-y)In) x Zn2(1-x)S2 solid solution. Thus-obtained dumbbell-shaped NCs were isolated from the resulting solution via size-selective precipitation. The amount of Cu doping in tip parts was controlled by changing the Cu content in metal precursors. TEM observations showed that obtained NCs had a dumbbell structure regardless of the Cu content in the metal precursor. Ellipsoidal NCs with sizes of 5.6 × 11 nm were deposited on both tips of rod-shaped ZAIS NCs. The absorption onset of the dumbbell-shaped NCs were red-shifted from 650 nm to 850 nm with an increase in the Cu fraction from y = 0 to 0.75. The photoelectron yield spectroscopy revealed that the conduction band minimum level was constant at ca. -3.2 eV, while the valence band maximum level was gradually shifted from -5.1 eV to -4.8 eV as the Cu fraction in tip parts increased from y = 0 to 0.75. Thus, it is concluded that the absorption property of dumbbell-shaped ZAIS NCs could be successfully extended from the visible to the near-IR region without changing the energy of photogenerated electrons, simply by modulating the degree of Cu doping in the tip parts. This tunability is useful for constructing efficient solar-light-driven photocatalysts for H2 evolution. T. Torimoto, T. Adachi, K. Okazaki, M. Sakuraoka, T. Shibayama, B. Ohtani, A. Kudo, S. Abstract (sommario):
I-III-VI2 ternary semiconductor nanocrystals, such as CuInS2 and AgInS2, exhibiting the quantum size effect have attracted much attention for the application to solar energy conversion systems because of their strong absorption coefficient and low toxicity. The optical properties of these particles are tunable by controlling the particle size. Recently we have successfully prepared anisotropic-shaped nanocrystals of ZnS-AgInS2 solid solution ((AgIn)xZn2(1-x)S2, ZAIS). Their photocatalytic H2 evolution activity could be controlled by the chemical composition as well as by the particle size,(1) and increased with particle morphology in the order of rice < sphere < rod.(2) On the other hand, the formation of type II heterojunction between different semiconductors was reported to be another strategy to enhance the photocatalytic activity of composite particles due to the effective charge separation of photogenerated electrons and holes at the heterojunction. In this study, we synthesize dumbbell-shaped nanocrystals composed of ZnS-AgInS2 solid solution (ZAIS) via epitaxial crystal growth in the solution phase, in which the heterojunction forms between rod- and rice-shaped parts in the nanocrystals. The photocatalytic activity of resulting nanocrystals is investigated for H2 evolution as a model reaction. Rod-shaped ZAIS nanocrystals with sizes of 4.1 × 23 nm as a precursor were prepared by the previously reported method.(2) These nanocrystals were heat-treated at 170 °C for 8 min in an oleylamine/1-dodecanethiol mixture solution containing AgCH3COO, In(CH3COO)3, and thiourea. Thus-obtained mixture nanocrystals were isolated from the resulting solution by adding methanol as a non-solvent. Dumbbell-shaped nanocrystals were separated from rice-shaped ones as a by-product with use of a size-selective precipitation technique. The photocatalytic activity for H2 evolution was investigated by the irradiation of dumbbell- and rice-shaped ZAIS nanocrystals in a mixture solution of water/2-propanol (1:1) containing Na2S as a hole scavenger with a Xe lamp (λ > 350 nm). The XRD analysis revealed that these ZAIS particles had a wurtzite crystal structure. With TEM measurements, we found that rice-shaped crystals with sizes of 5.6 × 11 nm were epitaxially grown on both the tips of rod-shaped ZAIS nanocrystals, resulting in the formation of dumbbell-shaped nanocrystals. The energy gap of dumbbell-shaped nanocrystals was determined to 1.9 eV from the absorption onset, being equal to that of freely dispersed nanocrystals with rice shape but lower than that of original rod-shaped ones, 2.8 eV. These suggested that the Zn content in rod-shaped parts of dumbbell-shaped nanocrystals was higher than that in rice-shaped parts of the same particles. By estimating the electronic energy structure of dumbbell-shaped ZAIS nanocrystals from those of corresponding rod- and rice-shaped nanocrystals, the heterojunction of type II structure was expected to form at the interface between rod- and rice-shaped parts in a dumbbell nanocrystal. ZAIS nanocrystals were dispersed in water/2-propanol solution and irradiated with a Xe lamp light. The H2 evolution was observed, the amount of which increased linearly with elapse of irradiation time. The H2 evolution rate of dumbbell nanocrystals was about four times larger than that of rice-shaped ones. These results indicated that the ZAIS nanocrystals worked as a photocatalyst and then the type II heterojunction in dumbbell-shaped nanocrystals induced the effective charge separation of photogenerated electrons and holes.
