Abstract (sommario):
Old-age hippocampal sclerosis (HS), characterised by severe neuron loss in hippocampal CA1, is a poorly understood cause of dementia. At present no objective pathological HS criteria exist. In life HS is commonly diagnosed as Alzheimer's disease. HS aetiology is unclear, although it has been associated with both ischaemia and TAR-DNA-binding protein-43 (TDP-43)-related neurodegeneration. Variations in genes GRN, TMEM106B and ABCC9 are proposed as HS risk factors. The aim of this thesis was to investigate epidemiological, clinical, pathological and genetic characteristics of HS in older European populations. 976 brains donated for the Cambridge City over-75s Cohort, the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study and the Finnish Vantaa 85+ study were available for evaluation -including bilateral hippocampi from 302 individuals. A protocol capturing the extent and severity of hippocampal neuron loss was developed, establishing objective HS diagnosis criteria and allowing observation of distinct neuron loss patterns associated with ischaemia and neurodegeneration. 71 HS cases (overall prevalence: 7.3%) were identified. HS was significantly associated with an advanced age at death as well as dementia at the end of life. Neuropsychological and cardiovascular characteristics were similar between HS and AD, except for a longer duration of dementia and more disability in HS. HS was not associated with neurofibrillary tangles, amyloid plaques, or vascular pathologies, but all HS cases evaluated for TDP-43 showed neuronal inclusions in the hippocampal dentate and a high frequency of other glial, neuronal and neurite TDP-43 pathologies. GRN and TMEM106B but not ABCC9 variations were linked to HS. A moderating effect of TDP-43 on this association was detected. HS presented pathologically similarly to frontotemporal dementia cases with TDP-43 (FTLD-TDP) caused by mutations in GRN, but differed from other FTLD-TDP subtypes. Results of this thesis reveal the importance of HS in the oldest old in the population, the key role of TDP-43, as well as providing robust methods to capture HS characteristics for an area that has been under-researched but is clearly vital to understanding dementia in the oldest old.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of (a) respondent age, (b) age and gender of perpetrator and victim, and (c) history of experienced violence on perceptions of elder abuse. Two-hundred and one (N = 201) middle-aged adults and 422 college students were assessed. Measures included adaptations of the Severity of Violence Against Women Scale and Elder Abuse Attitudes and Behavioral Intentions Scale-Revised. Middle-aged respondents viewed psychological behaviors more harshly than young. Middle-aged females and young males were less tolerant of middle-aged perpetrators. While past performance of elder abuse was predictive of future elder abuse, history of childhood abuse was not. Exploratory analyses examined middle-aged respondents' judgments of abusive behaviors and perceptions based on age of perpetrator. Middle-aged and young adults' willingness to respond to dimensions of quality, severity, and reportability were also examined.

Cafferata, Michael J. S. "Economic Comparisons Between an Even-Aged and an Uneven-Aged Loblolly Pine Silvicultural System". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36773.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study compares financially optimal uneven-aged and even-aged silvicultural regimes of loblolly pine (Pinus Taeda). Uneven-aged regimes which maximize net present value (NPV) are found by quantifying the effects of diameter distribution (Q factor), maximum diameter, cutting cycle, and residual basal area on NPV. For the benchmark inputs, the regime yielding the highest NPV had a maximum diameter of 12 inches, residual basal area of 45 ft2/acre, and a cutting cycle of 11 years. Financially optimal even-aged regimes are taken from published literature of even-aged silviculture. Even-aged and uneven-aged silvicultural regimes are simulated starting from, 1) bare land, 2) a balanced uneven-aged loblolly pine stand, and 3) a mature even-aged loblolly pine stand. For the three starting conditions and selected benchmark variable values, simulation of even-aged silviculture yields NPVs of $877, $2,152 and $3,400 per acre and simulation of uneven-aged silviculture yields NPVs of $644, $2,084, and $2,569 per acre. Sensitivity analysis shows, for the levels of the variables tested, that even-aged silviculture yields higher NPVs than uneven-aged silviculture when starting from bare land or from a mature even-aged stand. When starting from an uneven-aged stand, for the variable values tested, uneven and even-aged silviculture are financially very competitive.

Aside from the aesthetic benefits of avoiding clearcutting under uneven-aged silviculture, non-timber considerations between loblolly pine silvicultural systems are not well documented. Resource professionals hold opinions often in direct conflict with each other regarding the non-timber costs and benefits of even-aged and uneven-aged silviculture when considering wildlife, soil and water, and catastrophic damage events.

McFarlane, Andrew Ian. "Aged Electricity Distribution Asset Replacement". Thesis, University of Canterbury. Engineering Management, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8941.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Major segments of the Marlborough Lines Ltd (MLL) 11kV electricity distribution network are positioned within remote areas of the Marlborough region including the Marlborough Sounds, the Awatere and Wairau Valleys and the North Eastern cost of the South Island. The majority of these remote rural lines are due for replacement within the coming 20 years in order to maintain safety and reliability. The increased maintenance costs of operating rural electricity lines and the number of customers they serve often results in the line being uneconomic to operate. This investigation determines the current economical efficiency of the Sounds Feeder, a segment of line in the Marlborough Sounds. The financial, social and regulatory implications of the continued operation of this section of the network after performing distribution renewals are assessed in order to define the likely impacts of wide spread asset renewal to MLL and its customers across the coming 20 years.

Sun, Wei. "Creep of service-aged welds". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1996. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11727/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The creep behaviour of welds in service-aged pipes are studied. The aims of the research have been achieved using analytical, numerical and experimental approaches to the relevant subjects. Several features of the work are presented: (i) a systematic parametric study of the creep of two-material test specimens including a stress singularity analysis, (ii) an impression creep testing method using a rectangular indenter, which can be applied to study the creep properties in welds, and (iii) methods used for damage constitutive equation generation involving FE-damage modelling of the rupture tests of cross-weld specimens. General observations on the creep of two-material structures have been made using analytical solutions derived from four simple structures. The effects of geometries and relative creep properties on the creep stress or strain-rate distributions have been investigated using the finite element approach with idealised, two-material, axisymmetric models. The stress variations have been extensively studied on the centre-line and in the singularity regions of the models. An impression creep testing technique with a "long" rectangular indenter has been developed for the study of the creep properties in the narrow zones within weldments. The effect of varying the geometric test parameters has been fully analysed. The application and the possible advantages of the technique for determining the creep properties in welded components have been highlighted. Experimental testing has been performed for the purpose of verifying the impression creep testing technique and to provide the creep and rupture information required for the generation of creep and damage parameters for the exposed materials. The results obtained have further validated the applicability of the impression creep testing technique. Creep continuum damage investigations have been performed in order to generate the material parameters in a continuum damage constitutive equation and to model practical weldments. The methods used for material data generation have been established. The failure analysis and prediction for the service-aged welded pipes using steady-state analysis, damage modelling and extrapolation technique have been addressed.

Jang, Gail. "Latitude of choice among the institutionalized elderly : resident and staff perceptions". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28764.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The establishment of intermediate care facilities in British Columbia, as well as the establishment of similar facilities throughout the rest of Canada, was and still is a well-intentioned approach to meet the long term care needs of the elderly. The practices and procedures adopted by long term care facilities, however, tend to inhibit the personal autonomy of residents (Thomasma, 1985). Specifically, a facility's practices and procedures tend to inhibit residents' latitude of choice regarding daily living activities. Residents' latitude of choice may also be lessened when nurses implement well-intentioned helping interventions based on their own motivations and goals, rather than those of elderly residents. Latitude of choice measures the extent to which an individual's perceived degree of choice includes activities of importance to him/her. At present, there is limited research addressing both resident and staff perceptions regarding the autonomy (freedom of choice) of residents, particularly in relation to their daily activities. Accordingly, this study's purpose was to determine the institutionalized elderly residents' and their caregivers' perceptions of residents' latitude of choice regarding activities of daily living. From determining these specific staff and resident perceptions, significant differences were isolated. This study was conducted in two intermediate care facilities located in a large city within the province of B.C. The data collection instruments in this study included selected questions from Hulicka et al.'s (1975) revised Importance, Locus and Range of Activities Checklist, as well as a demographic data sheet developed by the researcher. Forty-five intermediate care 1 residents and forty-five nurses (Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Nurses' Aides) completed the study questionnaire and the demographic data sheet. The researcher studied the residents' and staff's responses to the Importance, Locus and Range of Activities Checklist by using non-parametric techniques for statistical analysis. The researcher used these techniques to determine the existence and location of differences in perceptions among the residents and staff. Significant differences exist in residents' and staff's perceptions when each group's importance ratings are combined with choice ratings. Isolation of the above importance and choice components for individual analyses indicate that the residents and staff had significantly different response patterns regarding a) the importance residents attach to daily living activities and b) the degree of choice residents associate with daily living activities. The above findings indicated that residents' latitude of choice may not be realized to a greater extent if the staff do not attach a degree of importance to a particular activity(ies) similar to that attached by the residents. Residents' latitude of choice may not be recognized to a greater extent if staff do not perceive that residents associate "some" or "no choice" with an activity of particular importance to them.

Abstract (sommario):

This thesis discusses theoretical and practical aspects of modelling of light propagation in non-aged and aged step-index polymer optical fibres (POFs). Special attention has been paid in describing optical characteristics of non-ideal fibres, scattering and attenuation, and in combining application-oriented and theoretical approaches. The precedence has been given to practical issues, but much effort has been also spent on the theoretical analysis of basic mechanisms governing light propagation in cylindrical waveguides.

As a result a practically usable general POF model based on the raytracing approach has been developed and implemented. A systematic numerical optimisation of its parameters has been performed to obtain the best fit between simulated and measured optical characteristics of numerous non-aged and aged fibre samples. The model was verified by providing good agreement, especially for the non-aged fibres. The relations found between aging time and optimal values of model parameters contribute to a better understanding of the aging mechanisms of POFs.

Abstract (sommario):
The average life expectancy of humans increased significantly, in considerable part as a result of advances in the medical field. As normal aging is accompanied by cognitive changes that can impair normal functioning, the management of elders with cognitive impairments becomes an emerging priority. Using young and aged rats that were behaviorally tested to assess their cognitive status, we aimed at understanding the neural substrates behind age-associated cognitive impairments. To characterize morphologically the changes in cortical circuits, we used a combination of intracellular filling of cortical pyramidal neurons and immunocytochemistry to characterize the dendritic loss and the cell-specific changes in excitatory and inhibitory inputs to these neurons. We found that normal aging is accompanied by pyramidal neuron dendritic loss which does not correlate with cognitive impairments. When we quantified the densities of excitatory and inhibitory appositions, we found that, in most cortical areas studied, aged cognitively unimpaired rats had reduced densities of both excitatory and inhibitory appositions on their distal basal dendrites when compared to young animals. On the other hand, aged cognitively impaired rats had reduced excitatory appositions and the inhibitory appositions remained high in density, leading to a decreased ratio of excitatory/inhibitory appositions. We found that cortical cholinergic bouton loss also correlated with cognitive impairments in aged animals. Furthermore, the cortical cholinergic densities positively correlated with the excitatory/inhibitory ratios in aged animals. As the loss of cortical cholinergic boutons is associated with age related cognitive impairments, the neurobiology of the cortical cholinergic system is poorly understood. Recent experiments demonstrated that nerve growth factor (NGF), the neurotrophin responsible for the maintenance of the cholinergic system, is secreted as a precursor (proNGF) in the extracellular space, together with the convertases and proteases to mature and degrade it. In this cascade, plasmin cleaves proNGF to mature NGF (mNGF) and matrix metalloproteinase 9 degrades mNGF. To verify if the newly described metabolic cascade has an impact on the cortical cholinergic phenotype, we used osmotic pumps to infuse alpha-2-antiplasmin (plasmin's endogenous inhibitor), or a synthetic MMP9 inhibitor, in the medial prefrontal cortex of young rats. We found that inhibiting proNGF maturation led to its accumulation in the cortical extracellular space and induced a significant atrophy of the cortical cholinergic system. This cholinergic atrophy was accompanied with impairments in spatial memory consolidation. On the other hand, MMP9 inhibition resulted in a marked increase in mNGF and induced a sprouting of cholinergic boutons. To investigate if the cholinergic system was the only ascending neuromodulatory system that was altered in aging, we performed immunocytochemistry on cortical tissue from young and aged behaviorally characterized animals to label and quantify noradrenergic and dopaminergic boutons. We found that the density of noradrenergic boutons was not altered in any group or cortical region studied. On the other hand, the medial prefrontal cortex of aged unimpaired animals had a higher dopaminergic bouton density than young or aged impaired animals. Aged impaired animals had significantly lower dopaminergic bouton densities than young or aged unimpaired animals. Together, our results suggest that a degeneration of cortical dopaminergic boutons might participate in age associated cognitive impairments, along with the loss of cholinergic boutons and an imbalance towards inhibition on cortical pyramidal neurons.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: To compare muscle architecture variables between sport and sex in competitive athletes, and to compare muscle architecture with performance variables in strong versus weak athletes, and good versus poor jumpers. Methods: The vastus lateralis (VL) and lateral gastrocnemius (LG) muscles of 139 collegiate athletes were collected using ultrasonography to determine muscle thickness (MT), pennation angle (PA), fascicle length (FL), and relative fascicle length (FLrel). Absolute and relative peak power, absolute and relative isometric peak force, and jump height were measured in a subset of baseball and soccer athletes. A 5x2 factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to investigate differences in group means between sex and sport for muscle architecture variables in the larger cohort. A 2x2 factorial ANOVA was used in the in the smaller cohort to investigate differences between strong and weak athletes, and good and poor jumpers. Results: Significant main effects were observed for sex in VL muscle thickness (MT), VL pennation angle (PA), LG MT, and LG fascicle length (FL). Significant main effects were observed for sport in VL MT, VL FL, VL relative fascicle length (FLrel) and LG MT. Significant interaction effects were observed for LG PA and LG FLrel. Muscle architecture profiles were significantly different between strong and weak, and good and poor jumpers in baseball, but not soccer athletes. Soccer athletes had greater PA but smaller FL than baseball athletes. Conclusions: Muscle architecture may play a role in sport selection, undergoes directed adaptation to sport specific training demands, and may differentiate between high and low performers in more anaerobic athletes. Males had greater muscle thickness than females. Patterns of PA and FL values between sport and sex differed between VL and LG. More aerobic athletes such as soccer athletes may have greater VL PA and smaller VL FL than more anaerobic athletes such as baseball athletes.

Zhou, JianBin. "Electrical Characteristics of Aged Composite Insulators". Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2003. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/16086/1/JianBin_Zhou_Thesis.pdf.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Composite insulators are widely being used in power industry to alternate traditional porcelain-based insulators for their advantages, including better pollution performance, low maintenance cost, light weight, compact line design. However, due to the short application history and experience, the degradation of composite insulators in natural environment is a big concern for the power utilities. The knowledge on the degradation of composite insulators is being studied world wide. The methods to assess the working conditions of composite insulators are being studied and created. In Queensland University of Technology (QUT), the approach based on chemical analysis methods was first developed. The work in this thesis based on the previous research work is focused on correlating electrical characteristics with chemical analysis results of the composite insulators and physical observations results. First, the electrical characteristics of composite insulators were presented and analysed, including leakage current, cumulative current, peaks of leakage current, the statistic results of the leakage current. Among them, the characteristics of leakage current were mainly studied. The shape of waveforms was found to relate to the degree of discharge activities of the composite insulators. The waveforms analysed by FFT revealed that the odd harmonic components became obvious during the discharge activities. The correlations between the electrical characteristics of composite insulators and chemical analysis results showed that the composition of composite insulators plays significant roles in terms of electrical performance. The oxidation index (O.I.) and the ester/ketone ratio (E/K) differentiated the different degradation reasons of the composite insulators in the test conditions. Finally, the thesis presents one approach, which aims to assess the surface conditions of composite insulators in an easy manner and in short time.

Abstract (sommario):
Although aging is often believed to be linked to cognitive decline, some elderly humans maintain cognitive function that is comparable to young adults (Rowe, J. W. & Kahn, R. L., 1987). In rats, variations in cognitive performance due to age are frequently assessed in tests of spatial abilities such as the Morris water maze (Issa, A. M., Rowe, W., Gauthier, S., & Meaney, M. J., 1990; Quirion, R. et al., 1995; Aubert, I., Rowe, W., Meaney, M. J., Gauthier, S., & Quirion, R., 1995). BIBN 99, a highly specific M2 receptor antagonist, reverses impaired ACh release as well as the cognitive deficits of aged, impaired (AI) rats observed in the Morris water maze (Aubert, I., Rowe, W., Meaney, M. J., Gauthier, S., & Quirion, R., 1995; Quirion, R. et al., 1995). To further characterize the potential benefits of BIBN 99, we tested (AI), aged, cognitively unimpaired (AU) and young (Y) rats in an object recognition task (ORT) and pre-pulse inhibition of acoustic startle (PPI). Both groups of vehicle-treated aged animals demonstrated reduced exploratory activity in the ORT compared to Y vehicle-treated animals. However, pre-treatment with BIBN 99 (0.5mg/kg) increased overall exploration time in AI and AU animals while having no effect in the Y group. In contrast, BIBN 99 had no effect on PPI in any of the groups. While these results are inconclusive concerning support for the potential relevance of BIBN 99 in the treatment of cognitive disorders, further research is warranted.

Stone, Timothy T. "Cultures of consumption within residential care homes : understanding elderly bricoleurs' cultural maps of meaning". Thesis, University of Stirling, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/107.

Abstract (sommario):
Set within the context that the world’s population is ageing at an unprecedented rate, it is argued that care of the elderly, and their everyday lived experiences are poised to become prominent concerns. In the shadow of this, the ageing population poses a myriad of challenges not only for the elderly but also for policy makers who put in place systems for the provision of services within residential care homes. By virtue, given that communities of elderly consumers voices are often muted within many academic analyses of social policy and service provision this study illuminates and distils communities of elderly consumers understandings of residential care homes. Given the absence of suitable literature within the fields of marketing and interpretive consumer research, this study turns to the sociological and anthropological literature of Hall and Jefferson (1976) and Levi-Strauss (1966). In doing so, communities of elderly consumers within residential care homes can be theorised as a cultural community of ‘bricoleurs’ within a ‘cultural map of meaning’. Furthermore, viewed through this lens, such bricoleurs can be seen to understand their meaningful everyday lived experiences within, and through, the use of ‘bricolage’. Emanating from eight existential-phenomenological interviews, a rich picture emerges wherein bricoleurs understandings of residential care homes can be seen to be embedded not only within, but also through, such things as the body, leisure trips, noise disturbances, death, large items of furniture, small hand-sized objects, mobility aids, quality of care and social interaction. Moreover, in the light of the resultant interpretations common themes can be seen to emerge within communities of bricoleurs social and material understandings of residential care homes, namely the notion of cultures of dependency, trauma and comfort. This research contributes to marketing knowledge in that it argues that communities of ‘elderly bricoleurs’ within residential care homes can be seen to be held together by unique understandings of cultures of dependency, trauma and comfort. Furthermore, it is also argued that elderly bricoleurs address themselves to a relatively limited amount of bricolage that enables them to keep alive actual, desired, imagined and fictional community ties. Furthermore, the reality and efficacy of cultural communities of elderly bricoleurs seems to depend on their ability to address ‘whatever is to hand’ (Levi-Strauss, 1966) in order to construct and understand their cultural maps of meaning within residential care homes.

Abstract (sommario):
The usage of lead-free solder joints in electronic packaging is of greatest concern to the electronic industry due to the health and environmental hazards arising with the use of lead. As a consequence, lead is legally prohibited in the European Union and the industry is aiming to produce lead-free products.            The reliability of solder joints is an important issue as the failure could destroy the whole function of a product. SnAgCu is a commonly used alloy for lead-free solders. Compared to solders containing lead, tin-rich solders react more rapidly with the copper substrate. The reaction results in formation of brittle intermetallic compounds and in poor mechanical reliability. The formation can be slowed down by the addition of nickel in the under bump metallization.     In this project the objective was to evaluate the mechanical reliability of solder joints in high temperature applications. An alloy of nickel and phosphorus was plated on copper plates by electroless plating. The plates were joined together using SnAgCu solder. The samples were then thermally aged at 180°C for different durations (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 hours). Tensile tests were performed on the samples. The result from the tensile test showed a decrease in mechanical strength with increasing aging duration. The fracture path shifted from being in the bulk solder to being at the interfaced.

Smith, Kimberly J. "Understory Plant Responses to Uneven-Aged Forestry". ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2007. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/216.

Abstract (sommario):
In northern hardwood-conifer forests, alternatives to conventional forest management practices are being developed in order to maintain biodiversity and ecosystem functioning while providing for timber revenue generation. The understory layer of vegetation encompasses the majority of plant species diversity in forested ecosystems and may be sensitive to timber harvest disturbance. Thus, monitoring the response of forest understories to new silvicultural techniques may provide a means for evaluating their intensity. In this study, we hypothesize that i) uneven-aged, low-intensity silvicultural systems can maintain understory plant diversity and support latesuccessional species through harvest disturbance; ii) retaining and enhancing stand structural complexity can increase understory plant diversity in northern hardwoodconifer forests; and iii) plant responses are influenced by interactions between canopy structure, soils, and exogenous climate processes. Experimental treatments include two conventional uneven-aged prescriptions (single-tree selection and group selection) modified to increase structural retention, and a third technique designed to promote late-successional forest structure and function, termed structural complexity enhancement (SCE). Four replications of each treatment were applied to 2 ha management units at three sites in Vermont and New York, U.S.A. Understory vegetation was monitored over 2 years pre- and 4 years post-treatment. We used a linear mixed effects model to evaluate the effects of treatment, soil properties, and drought stress on understory diversity and abundance. Compositional changes among treatments were assessed with non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMS), an ordination technique. Model results show that over time, understory responses were strongly affected by overstory treatment and less influenced by soil chemistry and drought stress. All treatments were successful in maintaining overall composition and diversity. However, late-successional diversity increased significantly in SCE units compared to group selection units. These results indicate that while conventional uneven-aged systems are capable of maintaining understory plant diversity, variations that retain or enhance structural complexity may be more efficient at retaining latesuccessional species. Increased microsite heterogeneity as a result of these techniques may also increase understory plant diversity, at least during the initial post-harvest recovery period.

Abstract (sommario):
China is currently facing what I expect to be its most significant challenge to date - a crisis in the care of its rapidly ageing population. The causes of this crisis are complex and multi-faceted and its implications far-reaching from the social, economic and political perspectives. This thesis examines the causes and consequences of the impending aged care crisis in China, with a particular focus on the urban elderly. In addition to extensive interviews with government officials, a sample of 2,000 retires and their children were surveyed in Shanghai as part of my research. My findings from the Research Survey and Questionnaire, together with my observations from site visits to numerous aged care crisis and the associated problems. Of primary concern is the fact that the Chinese government does not have in place an appropriate aged care structure nor a strategy to implement systems to cope with the impending crisis. I conclude that it is imperative the Chinese government recognises both the immediacy and scale of the crisis and acts accordingly. Failure to do so may result in both significant social unrest and severe economic consequences. Recommendations are offered for consideration by the Chinese government in an effort to manage the impending aged care crisis in China.

Abstract (sommario):
This research explores perceptions of knowledge management processes held by managers and employees in a service industry. To date, empirical research on knowledge management in the service industry is sparse. This research seeks to examine absorptive capacity its four absorptive capacity capabilities of acquisition, assimilation, transformation and exploitation and their impact on effective knowledge management. All of these capabilities are strategies that enable external knowledge to be recognised, imported and integrated into, and further developed within the organisation effectively. The research tests the relationships between absorptive capacity and effective knowledge management through analysis of quantitative data (n=549) drawn from managers and employees in 35 Residential Aged Care organisations in Western Australia. Responses were analysed using Partial Least Square-based Structural Equation Modelling. Additional analysis was conducted to assess if the job role (of manager or employee) and three industry context variables of profit motive, size of business and length of time the organisation has been in business, impacted on the hypothesised relationships.Structural model analysis examined the relationships between variables as hypothesised in the research framework. Analysis found that absorptive capacity and the four capabilities correlated significantly with effective knowledge management, with absorptive capacity explaining 56% of the total variability for effective xiv knowledge management. Findings from this research also show that absorptive capacity and the four capabilities provide a useful framework for examining knowledge management in the service industry. Additionally, there were no significant differences in the perceptions held between managers and employees, nor between respondents in for-profit and not-for-profit organisations. Furthermore, the size of the organisation and length of time the organisation has been in business did not impact on absorptive capacity, the four capabilities and effective knowledge management. The research considers implications for business in light of these findings. The role of managers in providing leadership across the knowledge management process was confirmed, as well as the importance of guiding routines and knowledge sharing throughout the organisation. Further, the results indicate that within the participating organisations there are discernable differences in the way that some organisations manage their knowledge, compared to others. To achieve effective knowledge management, managers need to provide a supportive workplace culture, facilitate strong employee relationships, encourage employees to seek out new knowledge, continually engage in two-way communication with employees and provide up to date policies and procedures that guide employees in doing their work. The implementation of knowledge management strategies have also been shown in this research to enhance the delivery and quality of residential aged care.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this non-experimental, quantitative descriptive study was to identify the holistic health educational needs of middle aged men and to consider nursing interventions. Between the ages of forty to sixty years, physical illness can coincide with a cluster of social changes as well as the normal developmental mid-life review. This can result in a prolonged period of physical and emotional stress (Berger, 1994). Mortality statistics demonstrate that, in comparison to women, men in the 25 to 64 age group have higher rates of suicide, motor vehicle accidents, work place injuries, ischaemic heart disease, non gender specific cancers, and alcohol consumption than women. With a disease oriented health system. the total health care needs of men which include prevention and maintenance of health, -appear not to be currently addressed (Pearson, 1993). A convenience sample of seventy Caucasian men aged 40 ~ 60 years living in a metropolitan area fanned the study group. All participants completed the National Wellness Institute, Wisconsin, USA, Lifestyle Assessment Questionnaire. This comprehensive educational/assessment tool holistically examined lifestyle, wellness behaviours, and health risk status. Analysis of the group report has provided indicators of the health educational needs of this group. Knowledge deficits and health topics of interest have been identified. Recommendations include the need for health professionals to be educated, so that they understand the complex sociological, psychological and political variables that influence men's ability to seek, obtain and maintain health at different age differentials. In addition, further research in to the development of gender and age specific health educational materials and programmes is recommended.

Horner, Barbara Joan. "The impact and influence of change on a residential aged care community: an action research study". Thesis, Curtin University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/1924.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study was an investigation of the complexities and challenges of change in a community-based aged care facility in Western Australia, to reveal the impact and influence of change on the community. It explored the impact of change on both the residents and the senior management team, as leaders of the organisation, and explored how change influenced the redevelopment process and future of the organisation. There is considerable literature on organisational change including the impact of change on the structure, function, process, workforce and leaders of the organisation. There is, however, little literature on organisational change within aged care communities, particularly with an emphasis on the complexities and challenges associated with change within an organisation that is both a business and a home for its residents. The study took the form of a participative action research study, occurring predominantly over two years (2002-2003) with some continuation into a third year (2004). The study had three phases and included two action research cycles and a critical reference group (CRG), comprising the senior management team (SMT) and researcher. It adopted a broadly qualitative methodology, using data from participatory observation and semi-structured interview; however, it did include quantitative and qualitative data from two 'quality of service' surveys for independent living residents and a staff satisfaction survey. The finding of this study are presented as a narrative account of the experiences of the participants. The study reveals that change associated with the redevelopment impacted on residents' wellbeing, described by them as quality of life. The redevelopment process and associated change also emphasised the importance of communication and explanation with residents to understand elements of quality of life and to monitor and manage the impact of change. The findings of the study highlight the challenge faced by community-based aged care communities classified by government, the industry and the wider community as primarily not-for-profit, to balance financial accountability and social conscience. The perception of benevolence influenced the attitudes of residents and staff and made business accountability more difficult to explain and realise. The study reveals that change also impacted on the structure and function of the organisation as it built its capacity for change. It reshaped the relationship between the Board and senior management team (SMT), which was reported as an improvement in communication, work relations and leadership effectiveness. The development of the leadership team, being the senior management team, was influenced by change and the change process enabled this team to become a competent, confident, cohesive senior team, with a preferred leadership style. A further finding was the realisation of the value and appropriateness of the action research process. It provided tools and processes that were used to plan, act, analyse and reflect on the many aspects of organisational change and enabled the organisation, principally the SMT, to reflect on the impact and influence of change. The research process supported their development as leaders as well as the development of the team. The process of planning, collecting data, analysing data, reflection and action provided a structure and process that they continued to use in their management practices, as new situations continued to arise with the redevelopment process.
