Abstract (sommario):

The purpose of this study was to explore the reliability of a method for observing expressions of affect, “Stålforsmetoden”. Stålforsmetoden focuses primarily on facial expression of affect, and more precisely the first expression presented by a patient in a psychotherapy session (referred to as transference affect). The theoretical basis is affect theory as developed in the works of Silvan Tomkins and Paul Ekman respectively. Data has been collected through structured observation and analyzed quantitatively. Inter-rater reliability was calculated using Cohen’s Kappa and amounted to K = 0.03, which means that there was no significant agreement between raters. This result implies that the reliability of Stålforsmetoden in its present form is insufficient and that further development of the method is needed. Possible reasons for the absence of inter-rater reliability such as the adequacy of education and the operationalization of transference affect are discussed and suggestions for future research are presented.

Abstract (sommario):
My faith is an important factor in my art making. I believe the ability to create is endowed by an original Creator. My work continues this initial creative legacy while confronting viewers with a storyline of beauty, truth, justice, and redemption. I am a realist oil painter devoted to portraiture and figurative work. Human form, gesture, and facial expression provide inexhaustible subject matter. I depict narratives from antiquity to the present day. Some of my paintings contain spiritual elements based on biblical writings presented in a contemporary context. I work from photos that I take of family, friends, and strangers from all walks of life. I often digitally reorganize the imagery to create the most effective composition in telling a story. Extreme contrast of light and dark is a crucial component of my current work. With it, I explore the dichotomy of revelation versus concealment. I also create pottery intentionally rooted in utilitarian traditions. I work with wheel- thrown and hand-built stoneware and I decorate it with a basic glaze palette. I appreciate how handmade ceramics add an organic, creative touch to everyday objects, as opposed to the inorganic and impersonal nature of mass produced ware. Furthermore, each unique vessel is a manifestation of the endowed gift of creativity interconnecting Creator, artist, and consumer.

Woodward, Keith Adam. "Affect, Politics, Ontology". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195189.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The relationship between politics and ontology has long been a troubled one for geography. More recently, the emergence of affect theory has complicated things even further by introducing a new set of frequently vague concepts into the already cluttered theoretical field of critical geography. This dissertation collects six articles that endeavor to develop the groundwork for establishing a continuum between affect, politics, and ontology. Specifically, it argues that not only is affect a politically rich area for approaching ontology, but, further, it is particularly well suited for addressing difference and radical politics. It proceeds by developing a series of concepts that animate a politically driven ontology of difference, namely: A) becoming and bordering in the context of border studies; B) a flat ontology as a fix for the debilitating transcendence of scale theory; C) an animation of a Nollywood as a 'site' based upon the flat ontological critique of scale; D) a politics of confusion that isolates the workings of affect in relation to the State and in direct action; E) a psycho-pragmatism that checks studies of affect and nonrepresentational theory against the analytic determinism that attends their developing methodologies; and F) the notions of fidelity and affinity as they get articulated through to the State and political subjectivity.

Cameron, David Stuart. "Modelling affect regulation dynamics (MARDy) : a computational simulation of affect change". Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3255/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the process of controlled affect regulation - the deliberate control of feelings and expressions - in terms of its dynamics. The thesis takes the perspective that affect is a dynamic and controllable process, regulated towards held goals, which themselves are controllable and dynamic. It is argued that affect regulation dynamics are underexplored, as are the dynamics of the related concepts of self-regulatory capacity and affect goal adjustment. A model of affect regulation dynamics (MARDy) is presented, which integrates affect regulation, self-regulatory capacity, and affect goal adjustment, within a control theory framework. A computational simulation of the MARDy model is constructed and known trends in affect are simulated. The model further offers predictions of affect dynamics and understanding of underlying mechanisms involved. Two studies are conducted to collect data for model representation. In Study 1, affect diary data are collected from five university staff and students. Parameter values for the model are derived from determining best fitting correlations of model results with the diary data across dimensions of felt-affect, self-regulatory capacity, felt-affect goals and affect-expression goals. In Study 2, affect diary data are collected from six teaching staff at a local primary school. This study extends beyond the first, to also incorporate data for affect-expressions. The capacity for the model to represent this second data set is assessed, using the protocol from Study 1. In a third, simulated, study, the model is extended to represent a network of two individuals. Propositions regarding affect dynamics across the dyad are made and tested in simulation. Considerations are offered for dyad representation in the affect regulation literature. The proposed dynamics of affect regulation, arising from model development and the three studies described, are discussed in terms of current literature; theoretical and practical implications of model results and propositions are discussed.

Hall, Joseph. "Affecting affect effectively : investigating a haptic-affect platform for guiding physiological responses". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/34466.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis describes the development of a platform for touch-guided anxiety management via engagement with a robot pet. An existing physiological sensor suite and “Haptic Creature” robot pet are modified to influence user physiological responses through real-time interaction guided by physiological data. Participant reaction to and perception of the platform is then investigated in several experiments, with the results from these experiments used to refine the platform design. Finally, an experiment is conducted with elementary school children to investigate the ability of the platform to serve as a comforting presence during a stressful task. It is found that participants were not able to recognize the Creature mimicking their breathing and heart rates. However, once informed of their physiological link to the Creature they were able to use the motion of this device to gain a better awareness of their own physiological state. In addition, the presence of the Creature and its activities are correlated with changes in heart rate, breathing rate, skin conductance, and heart rate variability. These changes are suggestive of a reduction in anxiety. Overall, participant response to the platform was positive, with many participants reporting that they felt the Creature to be comforting and calming. Children in particular were receptive to the Creature, and eager to use it in their stressful environment of school testing. It is found that care must be taken, however, to ensure the platform is presented in an age-appropriate manner, as sudden changes in Creature state can be alarming to the user. The combination of physiological assessment of user affect with a small, physically comforting robot results in a unique system with the potential to serve as a companion or training aide for children or adults with anxiety disorder, especially in clinical and educational settings.

Neiss, Michelle Roseanne, e Michelle Roseanne Neiss. "The relationship between positive affect and negative affect: A behavioral genetic analysis". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/289180.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
For years, researchers have debated the structure of affect. Although many researchers claim positive and negative affect are independent, others present evidence that the two are bipolar. The current study used a behavioral genetic design as a unique way to address this debate. A national sample of 783 sibling pairs, including 117 identical twins, 160 fraternal twins, and 506 full-sibling non-twin pairs provided information on their positive and negative affect over the past month. A sub-sample of 210 twin pairs provided additional information on their positive and negative affect over daily and weekly time frames. Several different analyses indicated that at the phenotypic level, affect demonstrated a bipolar structure. Multivariate behavioral genetic analyses were used to estimate common genetic and environmental factors that influence the relationship between positive and negative affect, as well as the specific genetic and environmental factors that influence each. These analyses indicated that specific genetic and shared environmental factors were not necessary to explain the relationship between positive and negative affect. This pattern of results was consistent with the bipolar viewpoint. The structure of affect looked to be bipolar across differing time frames. No age differences in the structure of affect were found.

Arapakis, Ioannis. "Affect-based information retrieval". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2010. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1867/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
One of the main challenges Information Retrieval (IR) systems face nowadays originates from the semantic gap problem: the semantic difference between a user’s query representation and the internal representation of an information item in a collection. The gap is further widened when the user is driven by an ill-defined information need, often the result of an anomaly in his/her current state of knowledge. The formulated search queries, which are submitted to the retrieval systems to locate relevant items, produce poor results that do not address the users’ information needs. To deal with information need uncertainty IR systems have employed in the past a range of feedback techniques, which vary from explicit to implicit. The first category of feedback techniques necessitates the communication of explicit relevance judgments, in return for better query reformulations and recommendations of relevant results. However, the latter happens at the expense of users’ cognitive resources and, furthermore, introduces an additional layer of complexity to the search process. On the other hand, implicit feedback techniques make inferences on what is relevant based on observations of user search behaviour. By doing so, they disengage users from the cognitive burden of document rating and relevance assessments. However, both categories of RF techniques determine topical relevance with respect to the cognitive and situational levels of interaction, failing to acknowledge the importance of emotions in cognition and decision making. In this thesis I investigate the role of emotions in the information seeking process and develop affective feedback techniques for interactive IR. This novel feedback framework aims to aid the search process and facilitate a more natural and meaningful interaction. I develop affective models that determine topical relevance based on information gathered from various sensory channels, and enhance their performance using personalisation techniques. Furthermore, I present an operational video retrieval system that employs affective feedback to enrich user profiles and offers meaningful recommendations of unseen videos. The use of affective feedback as a surrogate for the information need is formalised as the Affective Model of Browsing. This is a cognitive model that motivates the use of evidence extracted from the psycho-somatic mobilisation that occurs during cognitive appraisal. Finally, I address some of the ethical and privacy issues that arise from the social-emotional interaction between users and computer systems. This study involves questionnaire data gathered over three user studies, from 74 participants of different educational background, ethnicity and search experience. The results show that affective feedback is a promising area of research and it can improve many aspects of the information seeking process, such as indexing, ranking and recommendation. Eventually, it may be that relevance inferences obtained from affective models will provide a more robust and personalised form of feedback, which will allow us to deal more effectively with issues such as the semantic gap.

Middleton, Deborah Kathleen. "The theatre of affect". Thesis, University of Hull, 1993. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:3554.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
There is an extensive body of work in the fields of philosophy, psychology, and sociology which identifies a specific world view based on the following criticism of modern society: that people live monocerebral existences divided from their physical, emotional, and intuitive abilities. In this state, the capacity for affect -emotional response - is believed to be atrophied, and experience nullified. Such a condition - which may be loosely termed 'mind/body split' - results in a diminished ability to relate to other people, a sense of alienation from the world, and a pathological loss of human capacities. Many psychologists believe that this state prefigures neuroses, destructiveness, and schizophrenia. This thesis is concerned with the concept of 'mind/body split' and its relation to affective communication in the theatre. The subjects of my enquiry are theatre practitioners or companies whose work has directly addressed these issues: Antonin Artaud, Jerzy Grotowski, The Living Theatre, The Performance Group, The Open Theatre, Peter Brook, and Eugenio Barba. My aim has been to re-examine the work of these seven in order to produce evidence of their concern for affect, heightened experience, and the healing of mind-body schism. I propose that an understanding of these concerns provides a major critical key to the appraisal of the practitioners in question.

Hope, Claire Susan. "Politicising agency through affect". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/8645/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The key concern of this practice-led PhD is that lived reality and visual culture exist in a personal and political relation, one which politicises a viewer’s search for alternatives through the image. This suggests that cultural productions are an ideal context for addressing matters of social change; it also reverses the classic critiques of spectatorship within Fine Art, which emphasise critical awareness, the transmission and possession of knowledge and also activity, or participation, in the promotion of political agency in spectators. In this thesis I have used my own moving image and live performance art practice as the basis for reframing these perspectives on spectatorship. The context for this research was, in part, the enduring influence of classic critical positions in fine art practice, such as Debordian analyses of the image and Lacanian readings of the viewer. Yet, the ubiquity of viewing today, and dominance of the image, seemed to call for a new analysis of the viewer’s experience, from the viewer’s perspective. For instance, I provide a reading of a spectator’s relationship to the protagonist they view in an image using Attachment Theory, linking attachment to agency in order to challenge the common identification of separation between the viewer and image. I undertook this research as a viewer of culture and maker of artworks, but also as an artist who makes artworks from a viewer’s perspective, in order to critically rethinking our relationship to the images that we view. My own artworks respond self-consciously to viewers’ potential expectations of images, and the protagonists in them. For this reason I choreograph human interactions, which are always implicitly directed at the viewer, in a way that might prompt them to recall their own desire to find agency through images.

Krishnamoorthy, Govind. "Affect Regulation of Shame". Thesis, Griffith University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366917.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Over the past two decades persuasive arguments have been made to expand the role of emotion in clinical psychology. Research within the basic affective sciences suggests a number of ways that current psychological treatments may benefit from interventions explicitly targeting emotions, particularly for resistant forms of adult psychopathology. Research in this area has found that the inability to regulate feelings of shame may be a significant risk factor in the onset and recurrence of major depression and other psychological disorders. Although theoretical and research interest in the nature and consequences of shame have burgeoned in recent decades, little attention has yet been given to research on the regulation of shame. The present research describes two studies designed to redress this situation. Study 1 investigated the effectiveness of cognitive reappraisal relative to rumination in reducing feelings of shame. It was hypothesized that participants who reappraised an autobiographical shame event would report lower levels of shame than those ruminating about the event. Study 1 adapted the experimental methodology used by Ray, Wilhelm, and Gross (2008) in their investigation of the emotion regulation of anger. Participants initially recalled and rated a personal, real-life shame experience and were then asked to think about it in one of two ways: by ruminating about the event or by positively reappraising it. Results revealed lower levels of shame associated with reappraisal, relative to rumination.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, I offer one argument for the universality of the effect that a noun has on the aspectual properties of the verb phrase based on a perviously unnoticed aspectual asymmetry between count and mass nouns in their aspectual effect. Both Slavic and Germanic show this asymmetry. Using this aspectual asymmetry as a litmus test, I evaluate existing semantic and syntactic accounts of the aspectual effect of the noun to determine which of the two components, syntax or semantics, is most likely the locus of aspectual effect of the noun. I conclude that syntactic accounts can handle these aspectual facts in the most parsimonious manner.

Galeano, Victor. "Jag känner, alltså gör jag : En fallstudie om relationen mellan nio gymnasieelevers lokala affekter och deras arbete med två extremvärdesproblem". Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för matematik (MA), 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-91042.

Abstract (sommario):
Mathematics didactic research with a focus on affect is relatively new and has primarily focused on mathematics student's attitudes, motivation, interest and mathematics anxiety and how these affect students' learning and long-term view of mathematics. Less focus has been placed on varying emotional states (local affect) during problem solving. Identifying such local affects and how students deal with them is of importance to understand: why some students who have sufficient mathematical knowledge fail to utilize it during mathematical problem solving. Successful problem solvers have an intimate relationship with mathematics, which is characterized by an aesthetic experience of newly acquired mathematical understanding. Understanding these individuals' problem-solving processes and what local affects constitute their aesthetic experiences can be of importance in understanding how long-term motivation and interest in mathematics is promoted. In addition, the commentary material for secondary school mathematics shows that mathematics teachers are expected to give students the opportunity to discover the intrinsic value of mathematics and to experience the strength and beauty of mathematical logic. The present study describes a case study of nine high school students' work with two extreme value problems. It aimed to investigate whether a sense of beauty was present during the problem-solving process for the group, as well as which local affects (generally) and local affect pathways (especially) that accompanied such a feeling. First and foremost, a qualitative analysis is given of how pupils' local affects may have been beneficial or inhibited the individual problem-solving process. This is done by analyzing three students' answers in the problem-based questionnaire together with a content analysis of their proposed solutions. These cases were considered central in the present study. The results showed that local affects such as: curiosity, bewilderment, confusion, frustration, excitement, pleasure and anxiety have been reported to varying degrees in nine high school students. No significant differences were found in these local affects between the two problems. Positive local affective pathways varied in a complex way with students' cognition; the availability of individual mathematical resources, control and use of heuristics coincided with positive local affective pathways, characterized by pervasive curiosity, confusion and frustration in the problem solving process, as well as the problem solver's self-confidence. In contrast, students' also reported feelings of anxiety, which hampered the availability of mathematical resources. Furthermore, the results indicate that many of the students have an aesthetic experience of mathematical problem solving, where slightly more experienced the applied problem as beautiful. Individual differences in aesthetic experience were found that are related to students' perceived success with the problem but also well-established mathematical intimacy.

Abstract (sommario):
While there is plenty of research showing how a single affective reaction impacts a decision, there is practically no research which looked at the impact of multiple affective reactions. Moreover, the mediating mechanisms of this impact are still debated, with several mediation models proposed, but never tested and compared at the same time. In this thesis, eight studies were conducted that took a closer look at these two issues. The results show that multiple affective reactions combine in order to impact the decision and that in this combination, feelings are averaged. However, the combination only happens when the affective reactions are related to the same decision source (e.g. two reactions associated with a potential reward). When, on the other hand, the affective reactions are associated with two independent decision sources (e.g. one reaction associated with a task and the other with the potential reward), there is no combination and people only rely on the affectivity associated with the consequential source (i.e. the rewards). Finally, the most consistently obtained mediation model was where only immediate affective reactions mediated between the affective source and the decision. The results extend the literature by demonstrating the phenomenon of affective combination along with the boundary conditions that govern its impact on the decision, they offer new insights into what mediates this impact, and they provide solid ground for future work aimed at looking at multiple affective reactions’ impact on decisions

Kozar, Christina J. "Affect intensity and affect regulation in prisoners with a history of self-harm". Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1999. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1236.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Prisoners with a history of self-harm have reported experiencing more anger (e.g., Hilbrand, Krystal, Sharpe, & Foster, 1994 ), and despair (e.g., Shea, 1993 ), and less ability to cope (e.g., Shea, 1993; Liebling, 1992) than prisoners with no history of self-harm. This suggests that intense negative affective experiences and less control over these states might be pervasive characteristics in individuals vulnerable to self-harm. The present study tested the hypotheses that high affect intensity, the tendency to experience both positive and negative emotional states intensely (Larsen & Diener, 1987), and deficits in negative affect regulation would be associated with self-harm behaviour. Twenty prisoners with a history of self-harm and twenty control prisoners rated emotional responsiveness on a modified version of the Affect Intensity Measure (Larsen & Diener, 1987), and the utility of strategies to decrease intense negative affective states on an affect regulation strategies checklist (ARSC). Prisoners with a history of self-harm reported experiencing significantly more intense- levels of negative affect and less experience of serene states than control prisoners. Positive affect intensity levels did not differ between groups. The self-harm group reported utilising a significantly more varied, but less efficient repertoire of affect regulation strategies. They also rated cognitive strategies significantly lower and aggressive strategies significantly higher. Results suggest that screening prisoners for intense negative emotional responsiveness and dysfunctional affect regulation may facilitate the identification and management of prisoners vulnerable to self-harm. Further research is required to validate the dimensions of the AlM(M) and the ARSC, and explore the mechanisms of intense negative affective experiences and self-harm behaviour.

Abstract (sommario):
Real life decision-making frequently involves some level of affect, and research has demonstrated that individuals decide differently when outcomes are more or less rich with feeling. This difference in choice has previously been attributed to probability insensitivity in the presence of affect. In a series of three studies, we explored this possibility, while also testing alternative explanations, namely, that differences exist because of outcome characteristics such as comparability or precision. Individuals made choices between affect-rich side effects and affect-poor monetary lotteries in either a strictly numeric format, or with the addition of an icon array. Across the three studies we found little evidence that the icon array was beneficial, casting doubt on the previous explanation that differences in affect-rich and affect-poor choice are due to probability insensitivity. Contrary to our predictions, we did not find evidence that differences in choice could be attributed to outcome comparability, as there continued to be decrements in affect-rich choice, despite making affect-rich outcomes more comparable. As predicted, when precision in each affective context was better equated by describing monetary outcomes in less precise terms, the difference in affect-rich and affect-poor choice disappeared. It appears that it is difficult to choose well when outcomes are vague, which we suggest is potentially the result of a challenge integrating probability and outcome information. This research is a first step in providing a viable explanation for the “affect gap” and contributes to our understanding of how and why affect-rich and affect-poor choice may differ.

Abstract (sommario):
In this dissertation, we endeavoured to investigate the relationship between mental health and labour market changes in South Africa. We started by understanding the relationship between the aggregate CESD-10 and labour market status and then explored whether this aggregate relationship holds true for each of the three mental health factors that make up the CESD-10 score. Using data from the National Income Dynamics Study, waves 1-5, we documented increasing mental health symptoms with employed to other states of unemployment. This follows for somatic symptoms, depressed affect and positive affect, but the source driving the effects differs between factors and with the CESD-10 as well. We found that those who are NEA suffer to a greater extent in positive affect than in the other two factors relative to the employed. For those who are unemployed (discouraged), we see they also experience the strongest detrimental effect to their positive affect relative to the employed. However, they experience lower depressed affect scores relative to the employed. Those who are unemployed (strict), meanwhile, experience greater depressed affect scores out of the three factors when compared to the employed. As such, we expect to see an average increase in depressive symptoms classifications among those moving from employed to NEA statuses. We can also expect an average increase in depressed affect disorder classifications among those moving from employed to NEA labour force status. Likewise, we can expect higher positive affect across the five waves among those moving from a employed to NEA status. We find that, after controlling for observed individual characteristics and utilizing the panel structure of the data by allowing for individual specific fixed effects, negative labour market shifts have a significant negative impact on mental health. The sub-group analysis shows that this has a particularly adverse effect on black people and males.

Abstract (sommario):
The main aim of this thesis study is to identify the factors that affect higher education students&rsquo
perceptions of computerized assessment for learning. This study additionally aims to help effective use of computers in assessment activities by guiding the teachers or educational organization by interpreting the factors that affect students&rsquo
attitudes toward computer use in examinations. Quantitative research design has been used in this study. When choosing the participants, nonprobability sampling strategy was used due to its convenience. A total number 332 student of Middle East Technical University participated in the study. The data has been analyzed via Confirmatory Factor Analysis and interpreted by Structural Equation Modeling. The data loaded under 5 constructs: Perceived Ease of Use, Perceived Usefulness, Intention, Computer Attitude and Anxiety. By identifying the relations between these constructs, a structural model was created to determine the intention of students&rsquo
towards computerized assessment. The findings of this study have revealed that &ldquo
perceived usefulness&rdquo
is the most important determinant in students&rsquo
willingness to use computerized assessment. Additionally, if students have anxiety resulted from computer use, this affect their easiness perceptions negatively. Computer attitude is another factor that affects students&rsquo
perceptions of easiness and their anxiety. Finally it is concluded that students&rsquo
computer attitudes and anxiety affect their behaviors toward computerized assessment.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the trajectory that the developing technological fields of Ambient Intelligence and Persuasive Technologies introduce new intricate relationships beyond fundamental use and availability because they change our abilities to act. Since its classic articulation by Hegel (1927) philosophical explication of the relationship between people and technology states that technology is a mediating factor between people and the world. Associated with this view, which has characterized the resulting phenomenology and philosophy of technology for nearly two decades, is an understanding of technology as a form of alienation. In this dissertation the author shows how this old interpretation of the relationship between a person and their tool has emphasized how the person is active whilst the tool is passive. This traditional distinction fails to grasp the complex interaction between people and technology in the contemporary world. The nature of new technologies and novel theoretical work in this field suggests that this critical framework is now inadequate. Today, technology mediates the relationship between people and the world in increasingly complex and often collective ways. McLuhan (1967) stated: “Media evoke in us unique ratios of sense perceptions. The extension of any one of these senses alters the way we think and act”. As Greenfield (2006) and Fogg (2002) also posit, certain Ambient Intelligence and Persuasive Technologies are in-principle shaping everyday human behaviours in radically new ways. In particular, I explore how new technologies like those developed in the Artificial Companions Project can impact on our understanding of intimacy and identity. Indeed, Ambient Intelligence Technologies may play the role of reference groups (Shibutani 1987), groups who are real or imaginary and whose standpoints are being used as the frame of reference for the human actor. Given that these technologies have continuously reconfigured identification and profiling practices, this analysis rephrases insight of philosophers like Paul Ricoeur (1990), George Herbert Mead (1959) and Helmuth Plessner (1975) to trace how: The construction of our identity is mediated by how we profile others as profiling us. Thus, new technologies can become reference groups, encroaching on our everyday activities and even affecting our moral decision-making processes. As genuine upgrades of our practical space, they are destined to play a larger formative role in people’s lives in the future. Following Heidegger in Das Ding (Heidegger 1951), Latour once framed the wider social role of technologies as res publica or ‘public things’ (Latour 2005). He pointed out that the old German word ‘ding’ etymologically did not only infer ‘material object’ but also to assembly as gathering space - that thing that can bring together what it separates. Following Latour, Verbeek states that technological ‘things’ do not only mediate our existence, but are places where these mediations are made explicit – therefore, Verbeek argues, they are the places where people have to start to discuss and criticise the quality of the ways in which these ‘things’ help to shape our daily lives (Verbeek 2008). This thesis attempts to offer a new approach to this criticism through theoretical comparison and transdisciplinary analysis.

In this study I specify econometric models that test the hypothesis that income distribution affects innovation. The econometric results suggest that countries with more equal income distribution spend more on innovative activity, produce more innovative outputs, and are more productive in producing innovations than those with less equal income distribution. Other significant determinants of innovation include income level, the size of economic activity, and population density. However, my findings indicate that the effects of income distribution on innovation are limited to developing countries. Income distribution, the size of economic activity, and population density significantly affect innovation expenditures only in developing countries. Income level affects R&D expenditures in both developed and developing countries. Regarding the determinants of innovation output level, income distribution affects only developing countries, whereas the size of economic activity affects both developed and developing countries. Income level is not a significant factor in determining the level of innovation output. As for innovation productivity, income level is significant for both developed and developed countries, while income distribution and population density affect only developing countries. The size of economic activity is not a significant determinant of innovation productivity. Income distribution has an effect only on developing countries, because knowledge and information, the essence of innovation, have the properties of increasing returns to scale due to externalities, and increasing marginal productivity. Income distribution affects innovation expenditure, innovation output, and innovation productivity by affecting the aggregate demand composition and human-capital accumulation. Because the market size and the stock of human capital are relatively small in developing countries, income distribution has significant effects on the size of market, the stock of human capital, and therefore innovation.

In recent years there has been a renewed enthusiasm for the power of computer systems and digital technology to reinvent education. One-on-one tutoring is a highly effective method for increasing student learning, but the supply of students vastly outpaces the number of available teachers. Computational tutoring systems, such as educational software or interactive robots, could help bridge this gap. One problem faced by all tutors, human or computer, is assessing a student's knowledge: how do you determine what another person knows or doesn't know? Previous algorithmic solutions to this problem include the popular Bayesian Knowledge Tracing algorithm and other inferential methods. However, these methods do not draw on the affective signals that good human teachers use to assess knowledge, such as indications of discomfort, engagement, or frustration. This thesis aims to make understanding affect a central component of a knowledge assessment system, validated on a dataset collected from interactions between children and a robot learning companion. In this thesis I show that (1) children emote more when engaging in an educational task with an embodied social robot, compared to a tablet and (2) these emotional signals improve the quality of knowledge inference made by the system. Together this work establishes both human-centered and algorithmic motivations for further development of robotic systems that tightly integrate affect understanding and complex models of inference with interactive, educational robots.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of affect on privacy concerns and privacy behaviors. A considerable amount of research in the information systems field argues that privacy concerns, usually conceptualized as an evaluation of privacy risks, influence privacy behaviors. However, recent theoretical work shows that affect, a pre-cognitive evaluation, has a significant effect on preferences and choices in risky situations. Affect is contrasted with cognitive issues in privacy decision making and the role of affective versus cognitive-consequentialist factors is reviewed in privacy context. A causal model was developed to address how affect influences privacy concerns and privacy behaviors. The model of privacy risk proposed in this model argues that affect (or “feelings”) influences privacy behaviors directly as well as thru privacy concerns. To test the model, subjects were recruited using Mechanical Turk and paid for their participation. Affect, the key construct in this research, was measured using a word association technique as well as methods developed in the implicit attitudes research. Well-known scales were used to measure privacy concerns and behavioral intentions. Data was collected from subjects using a pretested privacy scenario. Data analysis suggests that, in line with published IS research, privacy concerns affect privacy behaviors. Affect has no impact on privacy concerns nor on privacy behaviors at the traditional 5% level of significance, though it is significant at the 10% level of significance. Improving the instruments used to measure affect, use of a large sample size to detect small effect sizes and more control over the instrument administration instead of an online survey are suggested for future research.

Abstract (sommario):
In diagramming the recent, global proliferation in quotidian cartographic technologies and practices, this thesis is concerned with the re-imagining of durable geographic motifs and refrains; those of maps and mappings. Conceptually, the thesis works to explore and interrogate the underplayed non-representational registers of cartography. Specifically, this entails unsettling the assumed ontological security of maps as representational artefacts, at the same time accentuating their affective and virtual vectors through an attentiveness to their spatial emergence and performance. In doing so, maps are rendered here not as mimetic, static grids of existence, but as intensive performances, productive of an unqualified geographic and political potential; that is to say, spaces of the virtual. Empirically, these conceptual concerns are worked through a series of fieldwork traces that animate and narrate a number of quite distinct yet resonant cartographic performances; namely geographic encounters with a counter-cartography group in North Carolina; a digital, open-source mapping organisation in both the UK and Peru and finally with two examples of an institutional cartography: Google and Ordnance Survey. Through these mappings, these fieldwork traces, what the thesis works towards is a micropolitical diagramming of contemporary cartographic practices, a diagramming that complicates deliberately the representational certitude of maps, but moreover, one that affirms the (im)material, anticipatory and minor geopolitics of mapping; a mapping of and for the everyday; a mapping of and for the vernacular.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
While a correlation between suffering from psychosis and an increased risk of engaging in aggressive behaviours has been established, many factors have been explored which may contribute to increasing this risk. Patients with a diagnosis of psychosis have been shown to have significant difficulties in facial affect recognition (FAR) and some authors have proposed that this may contribute to increasing the risk of displaying aggressive or violent behaviours. A systematic review of the current evidence regarding the links between facial affect recognition and aggression was conducted. Results were varied with some studies providing evidence of a link between emotion recognition difficulties and aggression, while others were unable to establish such an association. Results should be interpreted with some caution as the quality of included studies was poor due to small sample sizes, insufficient power and limited reporting of results. Adequately powered, randomised controlled studies using appropriate blinding procedures and validated measures are therefore required. There is a substantial evidence base demonstrating difficulties in emotional perception in patients with psychosis, with evidence suggesting a relationship with reduced social functioning, increased aggression and more severe symptoms of psychosis. In this review we aim to review this field to assess if there is a causal link between facial affect recognition difficulties and psychosis. The Bradford Hill criteria for establishing a causal relationship from observational data were used to generate key hypotheses, which were then tested against existing evidence. Where a published meta-analysis was not already available, new meta-analyses were conducted. A large effect of FAR difficulties in those with a diagnosis of psychosis, with a small to moderate correlation between FAR problems and symptoms of psychosis was found. Evidence was provided for the existence of FAR problems in those at clinical high risk of psychosis, while remediation of psychosis symptoms did not appear to impact FAR difficulties. There appears to be good evidence of the existence of facial affect recognition difficulties in the causation of psychosis, though larger, longitudinal studies are required to provide further evidence of this.

Longevity, and factors that may increase the human lifespan, have been the topic of many research studies attempting to pinpoint direct positive influences. Research demonstrates that among those who live beyond an average life expectancy, approximately 25% of the increased lifespan is related to genetics. The remaining 75% is largely due to environmental factors, mainly diet and lifestyle factors, that have the ability to influence genetic effects for increased longevity. The following types of studies on diet and lifestyle factors for increasing longevity and decreasing the incidence of chronic conditions were reviewed: Prospective cohorts, longitudinal, in vitro, randomized controlled trials, and prospective case-controlled studies. Results related to the Mediterranean Diet were consistent in the conclusion that adherence to this diet increased the lifespan and delayed the development of chronic conditions although calorie restriction demonstrated an increase in longevity, the studies examined failed to correlate this diet to the reduced incidence of disease development. Red meat and alcohol consumption, though both are considered carcinogenic, demonstrated some benefits to the elderly. However, both need to be consumed with caution as they may negatively impact health when consumed outside of moderation. Physical activity demonstrated a consistent benefit to the elderly by increasing longevity and decreasing age-related conditions. Epigenetic research consistently concluded that a diet high in antioxidants and healthy fats both increase telomere length and decrease DNA damage though the exact mechanism remains unknown. Studies on the impact of regular social interactions and time spent on leisure activities in advanced age are consistent in the conclusion that both contribute to health and well-being in this demographic group, but failed to connect to an increase in longevity.

de, Boise Sam. "Masculinities, music, emotion and affect". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3400/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Background: Gendered inequalities have historically been legitimated through the discursive enforcement of ‘natural’ sexual difference. One particular fallacy that has denied females a political voice, is that white, Western, males are more ‘naturally’ equipped for rational thought or strive for emotional suppression. In starting from the premise that this is always the case however, critical approaches to masculinities underestimate how adherence to the discursive ideal of rationality is mediated through emotional experience. Purpose: Using concepts of ‘habitus’ and ‘affect’ this thesis challenges the assumption that the perceived rejection of emotions, is firstly how masculinities are constructed. Secondly, because ‘individual’ emotions are a prerequisite to social action, it foregrounds the importance of a nuanced understanding of male emotional narratives explicitly through music. Culturally, music consumption is overtly concerned with ‘individual’ emotional experience and group interaction. Therefore male domination of music production and consumption, stands at odds with discourses of ‘rationality’, offering a means of understanding socially patterned, male emotional experience Methods: A two-stage, mixed methods approach was undertaken, with males ranging from ages 16-64 participating. The first stage was an online survey and the final sample included 361 males, spanning various demographics. The second stage was a series of six, life-history case studies with participants selected from those who had completed the survey, based on the richness of data they provided and stratified by age. Conclusions: Both survey and life-history accounts demonstrated a wealth of emotional experience. Whilst music was primarily used as a tool for emotional expression, it was also perceived to manage ‘undesirable’ emotions. Respondents’ emotional engagement with music differed over the course of their lives, in line with socially patterned expectations. This has implications for the notion of ‘learning to be affected’ through the construction of masculinities, indicating new ways of theorising about masculinities as social embodiment.

Mckeown, Conor. "Videogame ecologies : interaction, aesthetics, affect". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/8878/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This project is driven by omissions at the intersection of ecological game studies and media-ecology. Although authors have studied videogames from a variety of ecological approaches, few have attempted to develop a holistic methodology, embracing videogames' specific attributes while recognising their role within larger physical systems. This thesis is an attempt to address this, reading videogames as simultaneously about and functioning as ecologies. My methodology draws on the agential-realist philosophy of Karen Barad whose theory of 'intra-activity' is abundant with ecological ramifications. Adapting Barad's 'intra-active' framework for use with contemporary videogames, I read them as assemblages of hardware, software and their human players. I explore three significant aspects of game studies: interaction, aesthetics and affect. Focusing on interaction, I analyse the game Shelter. Emphasising the role of hardware and software, I read these processes in conjunction with an understanding of gameplay. This encourages a shift away from seeing gameplay as 'interaction' as it is defined within human-computer-interaction, and instead promotes a view that is 'intra-active'. Siding with Barad, play is radically reframed as a phenomenon that produces the apparent objects of its inception. In the second study I approach a series of more experimental games illustrating how an agential-realist worldview influences aesthetics. Analysing high-concept puzzle games Superhot, Antichamber, and Manifold Garden, I suggest that these games place a focus on aspects of ecology often over-shadowed in so-called 'natural' imaginings of our world, such as time, space and their entanglement. Finally, bringing my focus to the role of the player in my ecological understanding of games I analyse a number of short, human-centred or biographical games. Seeing the role of the player in an ecological manner, designers deviate from traditional methods of generating pathos and affect. Rather than developing empathetic relationships between player and avatar through immersion, viewing the player as only a part of an ecological system demands a posthuman response from players. These designers ask players to empathise while acknowledging their role is small and not central. This thesis presents a novel point of view that draws attention to the ambitious design practices of artists while suggesting new avenues in the future.

Xu, Wanxin. "AFFECT-PRESERVING VISUAL PRIVACY PROTECTION". UKnowledge, 2018. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/ece_etds/122.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The prevalence of wireless networks and the convenience of mobile cameras enable many new video applications other than security and entertainment. From behavioral diagnosis to wellness monitoring, cameras are increasing used for observations in various educational and medical settings. Videos collected for such applications are considered protected health information under privacy laws in many countries. Visual privacy protection techniques, such as blurring or object removal, can be used to mitigate privacy concern, but they also obliterate important visual cues of affect and social behaviors that are crucial for the target applications. In this dissertation, we propose to balance the privacy protection and the utility of the data by preserving the privacy-insensitive information, such as pose and expression, which is useful in many applications involving visual understanding. The Intellectual Merits of the dissertation include a novel framework for visual privacy protection by manipulating facial image and body shape of individuals, which: (1) is able to conceal the identity of individuals; (2) provide a way to preserve the utility of the data, such as expression and pose information; (3) balance the utility of the data and capacity of the privacy protection. The Broader Impacts of the dissertation focus on the significance of privacy protection on visual data, and the inadequacy of current privacy enhancing technologies in preserving affect and behavioral attributes of the visual content, which are highly useful for behavior observation in educational and medical settings. This work in this dissertation represents one of the first attempts in achieving both goals simultaneously.

Abstract (sommario):
It is essential for individuals’ well-being and relationships that they have the ability to consciously experience, express and respond to their own and others’ affects. The validity of a new conception of affect consciousness (AC), incorporating consciousness of both own and others’ affects, was investigated in this thesis. The clinical usefulness of the new conception was explored and an interview (affect consciousness interview – self/other; ACI-S/O) intended to capture this new definition was validated. In study I the interrater reliability and the concurrent validity of the ACI-S/O were assessed and found to be acceptable. There were significant differences in all variables of ACI-S/O between the four groups that participated in the study. Joy and interest had the highest ratings in all groups and guilt and shame had the lowest. By means of a factor analysis, two factors, labeled “general affect consciousness” and “consciousness about shame and guilt,” were obtained. General affect consciousness was related to different aspects of relational and emotional problems and possibly protection against them. In study II the clinical implications of AC were further explored in relation to eating disorders (ED). The level of AC in the ED group was compared with a comparable non-clinical group. The relation between AC and aspects of ED pathology were explored, as well as whether AC should be seen as a state or trait in patients diagnosed with ED. ACI-S/O was not significantly related to ED pathology or general psychological distress. There were no significant differences in AC between the different sub-diagnoses of ED but there were between the ED group and the non-clinical group. Significant pre-post correlations for both factors of ACI-S/O were found, indicating that AC could be seen as a stable dimension that might be important for ED pathology but is unrelated to ED symptoms. In study III the relationship between AC and self-reported attachment style (ASQ) was explored in a non-clinical group and three patient groups. There were significant correlations between all scores on ACI- S/O and the ASQ, with the exception of consciousness about guilt. Multiple regression analyses showed that AC, and especially others’ affects, contributed significantly to the ASQ subscales. AC and in particular own joy and others’ guilt and anger seem to be of importance for attachment style. In study IV the importance of AC for the treatment process was explored. Patients’ AC before therapy was significantly correlated with patients’ positive feelings towards their therapists but not with their alliance ratings. Patients’ warm and positive feelings were related to pre-therapy AC, whereas negative feelings were related to low alliance ratings in the previous sessions.

Abstract (sommario):
In my dissertation, I have explored the role of social media in social organization and mobilization.Theoretically, I draw upon sociological and organizational concepts such as collective action, collective identity, and social movements and adopt a process and practice perspective and follow sociomaterial theorizing. Adopting an interpretivist approach, I qualitatively analyze data from two sources: online data (MySF content including photos, captions, and comments) and interview with the founder of the page and its contributors

Abstract (sommario):
Our research is based on the discernible qualities of the constructions we perceive, but these qualities cannot be attributed to concepts or factual causes. Words, and the whole signifying process, cannot frame the sensorial tangibleness; and the concepts are way too vast to determine the unicity of a building or of its statement. Using a musical metaphor, we say that in a major mode of mental representation we perceive already-formed objects and subjects from which sensorial attributes gain meaning. But this major mode cannot seize how and why a building or its own statement are unique. This unicity of the Perceived is birthed in a genetic occurrence, as sensible and semiotical dynamics progressively determine qualities and statements. The aim of this research is to build a theory of these individuation dynamics. When a building is being “individualized”, it is through the variations of sensible and semiotical powers that progressively arrange the object and the statements. This process demands that we use another way of thinking, that we call the minor mode of affects. This mode has a mental operator - the Intensity - that allows the perception of how sensible and semiotical powers vary - which is the Destiny. We cannot theorize affects without being aware of how material objects are inter-affected, how powerful they are, and how they make us redistribute our thoughts and their relationships to those passions and emotions that rationality will never halt. Affect, as the adequate idea of what will be Destiny, allows the sense of singularities and of how they put rhythm in the process of an oeuvre, whether it is sensible or theoretical

Abstract (sommario):
The current study utilized structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the factor-to-factor relations and temporal associations between disturbances in negative affect (NA) and positive symptoms of psychosis (PP). Data were drawn from a large, public-domain data set (MacArthur Violence Risk Assessment Study). A dimensional approach was used to conceptualize and identify latent variables of NA (depression, anxiety, and guilt) and PP (hallucinations, delusions, and thought disorder) among individuals with a diagnosis of primary psychotic disorder. Results showed that anxiety, guilt, and depressed mood modeled an NA latent variable, and that hallucinations and unusual thought content modeled a PP latent variable. As predicted, results revealed strong, significant cross-sectional (synchronous) associations between NA and PP at each measured time-frame, suggesting that NA and PP occurred concurrently within the sample. Contrary to predictions, no significant cross-lagged effect between NA and PP was identified (10 weeks and 20 weeks respectively).
