Levin, Lars. "Interbedömarreliabilitet i affektavläsning - en explorativ metodstudie". Thesis, Stockholm University, Department of Psychology, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-34772.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

The purpose of this study was to explore the reliability of a method for observing expressions of affect, “Stålforsmetoden”. Stålforsmetoden focuses primarily on facial expression of affect, and more precisely the first expression presented by a patient in a psychotherapy session (referred to as transference affect). The theoretical basis is affect theory as developed in the works of Silvan Tomkins and Paul Ekman respectively. Data has been collected through structured observation and analyzed quantitatively. Inter-rater reliability was calculated using Cohen’s Kappa and amounted to K = 0.03, which means that there was no significant agreement between raters. This result implies that the reliability of Stålforsmetoden in its present form is insufficient and that further development of the method is needed. Possible reasons for the absence of inter-rater reliability such as the adequacy of education and the operationalization of transference affect are discussed and suggestions for future research are presented.

Irwin, Brandon. "Light Affect". VCU Scholars Compass, 2012. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/2663.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
My faith is an important factor in my art making. I believe the ability to create is endowed by an original Creator. My work continues this initial creative legacy while confronting viewers with a storyline of beauty, truth, justice, and redemption. I am a realist oil painter devoted to portraiture and figurative work. Human form, gesture, and facial expression provide inexhaustible subject matter. I depict narratives from antiquity to the present day. Some of my paintings contain spiritual elements based on biblical writings presented in a contemporary context. I work from photos that I take of family, friends, and strangers from all walks of life. I often digitally reorganize the imagery to create the most effective composition in telling a story. Extreme contrast of light and dark is a crucial component of my current work. With it, I explore the dichotomy of revelation versus concealment. I also create pottery intentionally rooted in utilitarian traditions. I work with wheel- thrown and hand-built stoneware and I decorate it with a basic glaze palette. I appreciate how handmade ceramics add an organic, creative touch to everyday objects, as opposed to the inorganic and impersonal nature of mass produced ware. Furthermore, each unique vessel is a manifestation of the endowed gift of creativity interconnecting Creator, artist, and consumer.

Woodward, Keith Adam. "Affect, Politics, Ontology". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195189.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The relationship between politics and ontology has long been a troubled one for geography. More recently, the emergence of affect theory has complicated things even further by introducing a new set of frequently vague concepts into the already cluttered theoretical field of critical geography. This dissertation collects six articles that endeavor to develop the groundwork for establishing a continuum between affect, politics, and ontology. Specifically, it argues that not only is affect a politically rich area for approaching ontology, but, further, it is particularly well suited for addressing difference and radical politics. It proceeds by developing a series of concepts that animate a politically driven ontology of difference, namely: A) becoming and bordering in the context of border studies; B) a flat ontology as a fix for the debilitating transcendence of scale theory; C) an animation of a Nollywood as a 'site' based upon the flat ontological critique of scale; D) a politics of confusion that isolates the workings of affect in relation to the State and in direct action; E) a psycho-pragmatism that checks studies of affect and nonrepresentational theory against the analytic determinism that attends their developing methodologies; and F) the notions of fidelity and affinity as they get articulated through to the State and political subjectivity.

Cameron, David Stuart. "Modelling affect regulation dynamics (MARDy) : a computational simulation of affect change". Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3255/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the process of controlled affect regulation - the deliberate control of feelings and expressions - in terms of its dynamics. The thesis takes the perspective that affect is a dynamic and controllable process, regulated towards held goals, which themselves are controllable and dynamic. It is argued that affect regulation dynamics are underexplored, as are the dynamics of the related concepts of self-regulatory capacity and affect goal adjustment. A model of affect regulation dynamics (MARDy) is presented, which integrates affect regulation, self-regulatory capacity, and affect goal adjustment, within a control theory framework. A computational simulation of the MARDy model is constructed and known trends in affect are simulated. The model further offers predictions of affect dynamics and understanding of underlying mechanisms involved. Two studies are conducted to collect data for model representation. In Study 1, affect diary data are collected from five university staff and students. Parameter values for the model are derived from determining best fitting correlations of model results with the diary data across dimensions of felt-affect, self-regulatory capacity, felt-affect goals and affect-expression goals. In Study 2, affect diary data are collected from six teaching staff at a local primary school. This study extends beyond the first, to also incorporate data for affect-expressions. The capacity for the model to represent this second data set is assessed, using the protocol from Study 1. In a third, simulated, study, the model is extended to represent a network of two individuals. Propositions regarding affect dynamics across the dyad are made and tested in simulation. Considerations are offered for dyad representation in the affect regulation literature. The proposed dynamics of affect regulation, arising from model development and the three studies described, are discussed in terms of current literature; theoretical and practical implications of model results and propositions are discussed.

Hall, Joseph. "Affecting affect effectively : investigating a haptic-affect platform for guiding physiological responses". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/34466.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis describes the development of a platform for touch-guided anxiety management via engagement with a robot pet. An existing physiological sensor suite and “Haptic Creature” robot pet are modified to influence user physiological responses through real-time interaction guided by physiological data. Participant reaction to and perception of the platform is then investigated in several experiments, with the results from these experiments used to refine the platform design. Finally, an experiment is conducted with elementary school children to investigate the ability of the platform to serve as a comforting presence during a stressful task. It is found that participants were not able to recognize the Creature mimicking their breathing and heart rates. However, once informed of their physiological link to the Creature they were able to use the motion of this device to gain a better awareness of their own physiological state. In addition, the presence of the Creature and its activities are correlated with changes in heart rate, breathing rate, skin conductance, and heart rate variability. These changes are suggestive of a reduction in anxiety. Overall, participant response to the platform was positive, with many participants reporting that they felt the Creature to be comforting and calming. Children in particular were receptive to the Creature, and eager to use it in their stressful environment of school testing. It is found that care must be taken, however, to ensure the platform is presented in an age-appropriate manner, as sudden changes in Creature state can be alarming to the user. The combination of physiological assessment of user affect with a small, physically comforting robot results in a unique system with the potential to serve as a companion or training aide for children or adults with anxiety disorder, especially in clinical and educational settings.

Neiss, Michelle Roseanne, e Michelle Roseanne Neiss. "The relationship between positive affect and negative affect: A behavioral genetic analysis". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/289180.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
For years, researchers have debated the structure of affect. Although many researchers claim positive and negative affect are independent, others present evidence that the two are bipolar. The current study used a behavioral genetic design as a unique way to address this debate. A national sample of 783 sibling pairs, including 117 identical twins, 160 fraternal twins, and 506 full-sibling non-twin pairs provided information on their positive and negative affect over the past month. A sub-sample of 210 twin pairs provided additional information on their positive and negative affect over daily and weekly time frames. Several different analyses indicated that at the phenotypic level, affect demonstrated a bipolar structure. Multivariate behavioral genetic analyses were used to estimate common genetic and environmental factors that influence the relationship between positive and negative affect, as well as the specific genetic and environmental factors that influence each. These analyses indicated that specific genetic and shared environmental factors were not necessary to explain the relationship between positive and negative affect. This pattern of results was consistent with the bipolar viewpoint. The structure of affect looked to be bipolar across differing time frames. No age differences in the structure of affect were found.

Abstract (sommario):
The task of artificial intelligence policymaking is complex and challenging, made all the more difficult by such a rapidly evolving technology. In order to address the security and economic implications of AI, policymakers must be able to viably define, categorize and assess AI research and technology. In this issue brief, CSET puts forward a functional definition of AI, based on three core principles, that significantly outperforms methods developed over the last decade.
