Abstract (sommario):
The thesis addressed the saving behaviour of adolescents within the social context of the family, which has received little attention to date. The research regarded adolescent economic socialization and the development of saving behaviour as an integral part of general socialization and adolescent psychological development. The importance of saving was investigated relative to alternative ways for getting larger sums of money. Three large survey studies with adolescents and one survey study with adolescents and their parents were carried out. In Study 1, 470 students between the ages of 11 and 18 took part. The results of this study revealed that adolescents do think of saving as a means of accumulating larger sums of money. Studies 2 and 3 sampled 290 and 443 students between the ages of 11 and 17 and 13 to 14, respectively, providing empirical evidence of adolescents’ endeavour for independence, reflected by their saving motives as well as the changing of their attitudes towards saving as a skill. The thesis examined a number of significant predictors for adolescents’ general tendency to save. The studies linked adolescent saving with home atmosphere and perceived parenting style empirically for the first time. A path model illustrates the associations that were found between the behaviour and attitudes of the parents and the saving behaviour and attitudes of their adolescent child. It demonstrates that the development of saving behaviour is linked to the power relationship between parent and child. The findings support the behavioural life-cycle hypothesis as well as the benefits of being raised in an ‘authoritative home’ with regard to skills in saving.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: With the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa, it is important to understand the sexual behaviours that place youth at risk of HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unwanted pregnancies in order to develop and implement appropriate health-promoting interventions. Parents are in a unique position to help adolescents to have responsible attitudes and behaviour towards sex, and to educate adolescents into healthy sexual adults. The study aimed to investigate parent-adolescent communication and adolescents’ sexual risk-taking behaviour, and the relationship between them. An exploratory, descriptive research design and a quantitative methodological approach were used. One biographical questionnaire, three measuring scales of parent-adolescent communication and one questionnaire about adolescent sexual risk-taking behaviour were used as measuring instruments. Data from 95 female adolescents who were attending the family planning facilities of two clinics in the Metropole Region of the Western Cape were employed for the study. The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlations, analyses of variance and multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed a high prevalence of sexual risk-taking behaviours among adolescents in the Western Cape. Family environment characteristics, especially the parents’ marital status, play a significant role in both parent-adolescent communication and sexual risk-taking behaviour. Unexpected findings were some significant correlations that were found between different factors of both general and sexual parent-adolescent communication. Spearman’s correlations and best subsets multiple regression analysis were performed on the data to ascertain which factors are significantly correlated or associated with adolescent sexual risk-taking behaviour. In both statistical analyses, the amount of parent-adolescent communication about sexual issues was the most important. A significant negative correlation between adolescents’ sexual risk-taking behaviours and the amount of parent-adolescent communication about sexual issues illustrates the positive influence of amount of parent-adolescent sexual communication on adolescents’ sexual risk-taking behaviour.

This qualitative study explores which cognitive characteristics and strategies are common to both adult experts and adolescents when placed in the role of an expert. The basis for comparison are the nine characteristics and five strategies identified as common to all adult experts by Shanteau, 1992. Data were collected from interviews held with eight adolescents upon completion of an "Expert Project" in their Secondary II Physical Science course. Certain shared characteristics and strategies emerged during data collection and analysis, such as acts responsibly and uses help from others. Implications for future research are presented.

Abstract (sommario):
The present research is on parent influence on adolescent political development. The study surveys parent political behavior, parent warmth and quality of relationship with their child, and adolescent knowledge of parent political behavior to understand how these factors affect a match in party affiliation in parent and adolescent. 547 family groups are included in the study. I hypothesized that an adolescent’s politics would be more likely to match that of their parent when the parent is politically involved and warm and the adolescent is aware of the parent’s political behavior. This study is important because individuals’ party affiliation determines their voting behavior, which determines many decisions made in this country. It is interesting to understand how people develop their party affiliation and what role parents have in this development.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Background: Youth relocation is a common phenomenon, with most children and adolescents moving 2.6 times by age 18. While multiple studies have been conducted on the consequences of youth relocation, most have focused on already vulnerable populations, potentially leading to overestimation of the psychosocial effects of relocation on youth. Adolescents often experience negative psychosocial outcomes following residential relocation. Current theories have focused on how adolescent psychosocial functioning is impaired due to disruptions in social networks. Though this has been a focus of research, few studies have investigated potential protective social relationships within the family, or how relocation may impact intimate relationships into adulthood.

Methods: Secondary data sources were utilized to allow for large samples, and consisted of both yearly data, and longitudinal data. For the first paper, data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) involving 178,022 youth aged 12-17 was used, covering the years of 2005 to 2015. Participants were grouped into three categories: non-movers, single moves, and two or more moves reported within the last 12 months. Ordinal logistic regression was used to estimate individual, family, and school-related factors, as well as behavioral correlates of relocation in the past 12 months. For papers two and three, the National Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) dataset was used. Those reporting relocating at least once prior to Wave I were designated as “movers”. Propensity score matching was conducted using a .25 caliper with 1:1 matching. Matched groups of movers and non-movers were assessed longitudinally in order to investigate how youth adapted into adulthood.

Results: For paper one, 22.9% of youth reported at least one household relocation within the past year. Movers were more likely to identify as racial minorities and report lower household income. Those reporting at least one household move were also significantly more likely to report a past-year depressive episode and increased interest in high-risk activities. They were also more likely to report decreased parental engagement and decreased academic engagement. Both substance use and delinquent or criminal behaviors were significantly increased with those reporting relocation, with each relocation predicting a 97.5% increased likelihood of a past year arrest or booking. Paper two showed that prior to matching, those reporting relocation prior to Wave I were significantly more likely to be non-White, receive household assistance, and were more likely to report engagement in substance use and delinquent activities at Wave I. Regression analysis showed that those youth with siblings were more likely to report improved adaptation at Wave II. Significant effects were found for those with siblings close in age, and for those with same-gendered siblings. Lastly, paper three suggested that youth who have experienced household relocation were significantly more likely to report younger ages of sexual debut, decreased contraceptive use, and an increased number of partners. Mobile youth were also more likely to report at least one marriage by Wave III.

Conclusions: Household relocation exposes adolescents to a bevy of psychosocial risks and predicts a steep increase in risky behaviors. While not typically identified as a high-risk group, additional attention needs to be paid to this population. They experience numerous risks, primarily in interpersonal relationships.

Ostrum, Erin. "Adolescent Body Image| Examining the Relationship Between Adolescent Dancers and Their Teachers". Thesis, Alfred University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10639773.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

This study examined the relationship between the perceived verbal and nonverbal messages given by dance teachers and the body image of their adolescent dancers. Variables such as level of dance (i.e., competitive or purely recreational) and amount of time spent practicing dance were also examined. Seventy-eight female adolescents, who were enrolled in dance classes in studios in Western New York, participated in this study. This is a sample that is younger than has typically been studied. Results indicated that more negative messages perceived by the dancer from their teacher related to a more negative body image in the dancer. Additionally, a significant relationship with the dancers’ body image was not demonstrated when considering competitive level and amount of time practicing dance. Thus, regardless of level of dance or amount of time spent practicing dance, a strong relationship existed between verbal and nonverbal messages perceived by the dancer from the teacher and a dancer’s body image. Given the limited amount of current research that exists for this group of adolescent recreational dancers, the significant findings of the current study may begin to shape the future interactions between dance teachers and their students. Specifically, dance teachers should be aware of the connection between the messages they give and their dancer’s body image. This awareness might prompt them to take more care with the messages they offer or even seek training in this area.

Abstract (sommario):
As I have worked with teenagers in regular and alternative schools, I have often wondered why some children seem to be more prone to displaying behavioral problems. One popular explanation points to the home environment as the place where appropriate behaviors are learned, and strength, discipline and positive self-image are developed to resist negative pressures of the child's peer culture. Bronfenbrenner (1986) very eloquently describes the importance of an enriched home life for the development of a well-adjusted child. Likewise, the Rochester Schools Project (Connell, Deci, Ryan, and Grolnick, 1989) speaks to the need for teachers and staff to "connect" with students, and thus through their interactions help them work through difficult times and make decisions regarding their choices of actions.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Research has noted the onset of psychosis during adolescence and the influence of childhood adversity on the risk for psychosis. Prior social and self-construction difficulties contributory to psychosis and theorised to impinge upon adolescent development have also been highlighted. However, despite these links little empirical research has investigated this. This thesis aims to investigate the contributions of disruptions and exaggerations to adolescent egocentrism suggested by Harrop and Trower (2001). This thesis investigated the relationship between psychosis and adolescent egocentrism in healthy adolescents, young people at high risk of psychosis and those with a first episode of psychosis. These relationships were tracked across the adolescent period and finally examined in clinical samples. It was found that a rise in psychotic-like experiences in mid-adolescence was linked to a rise in egocentric thinking suggesting that adolescent egocentrism contributes to psychotic-like experiences in healthy adolescents. At the clinical psychosis level, adolescent egocentrism was not contributory; however findings suggested that early emotional trauma and insecure attachment were moderated by adolescent egocentrism difficulties influencing the persistence of psychotic-like experiences into psychosis. These findings support the critical importance of adolescent development and developmental risk factors within the genesis of psychosis.

Somal, Justina. "Adolescent romantic relationships : exploring the perspectives of clinicians and adolescents". Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/620476.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Aims and Rationale: Romantic relationships are recognised for playing a pivotal role for the emerging adolescent. These relationships are frequently reported to be detrimental to adolescent emotional and psychological well-being, though research focusing on adolescents’ romantic relationships in a clinical capacity is significantly restricted. This study endeavours to understand factors that affect youth in romantic relationships according to practitioners, and how these factors correspond to adolescents with no experience of therapy. These findings aim to broaden an understanding of the subject area, develop therapeutic practices and explore whether adolescents would benefit from counselling regarding their romantic relationships. Method: A mixed-method approach was used to carry out semi-structured interviews with 7 therapeutic practitioners to explore factors that affect adolescent romantic relationships. Themes extracted from a thematic analysis were used to develop an online q-sort survey with a non-clinical adolescent sample. Subjective viewpoints of 33 adolescents were quantitatively examined and triangulated with practitioners’ views. Results: The triangulated findings developed an understanding of factors that may affect adolescent adjustments to romantic relationships. Perspectives held by practitioners and those from adolescents, suggested key differences in developmental benefits, emotional and social adjustments and the role of adults. Similarities regarding the difficulties experienced by adolescent males were identified. Conclusion: Contributions of the findings go beyond whether counselling is appropriate or needed for adolescents in a romantic relationship. They add to an understanding of the discrepancies in the way romantic relationships are perceived by practitioners in affecting adolescents’ adjustments and development, as opposed to how young people actually experience these relationships.

Abstract (sommario):
Two measures, The Adolescent Invulnerability Scale (TAIS) and The Adolescent Personal Uniqueness Scale (TAPUS) were developed to quantify levels of felt invulnerability and personal uniqueness, respectively. The relationship among these two personal fables (invulnerability, personal uniqueness), and mental health variables was assessed in a large sample of adolescents (n = 248, including seventh and eighth grade students). Participants responded to the newly crafted measures of adolescent invulnerability and personal uniqueness, the Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale, three indices of suicidal ideation, an inventory of delinquent risk behaviors, and two subscales from the Self-Image Questionnaire for Young Adolescents. It was predicted that invulnerability would be positively associated with risk behaviors and more prevalent among boys. In addition, personal uniqueness would be positively associated with depression and suicidal ideation, and more prevalent in girls. With respect to personal fable ideation, boys demonstrated higher levels of felt invulnerability and more risk behaviors than girls. In addition, girls reported more feelings of depression than boys, however neither group differed on the amount of reported felt personal uniqueness. The results show that the personal fables of invulnerability and personal uniqueness are differentially linked to indices of mental health within an adolescent population.

Fairley, Shakesha (Shai). "Associations Between Adolescent Perceptions of Parental Interactions and Adolescent Sexual Behaviors". ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2814.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Sexual risk behaviors among U.S. adolescents is a major public health concern. Adolescents are contracting sexually transmitted diseases at alarming rates. The purpose of this research was to identify factors related to parent-child interactions that influence adolescent sexual behaviors. A combination of attachment theory and family systems theory was used to help explain how adolescent sexual choices (age of sexual debut, use of birth control, use of condoms, multiple sex partners in a 12-month period) are affected by the perceived quality of parent-child interactions (maternal/parental closeness, monitoring, communication, and involvement). Archival data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics National Longitudinal Survey of Child and Young Adult cohort 1979 (NLSY79) was used for this research. A sample of 11,504 adolescents aged 12 to 19 years, and their biological mothers who participated in the longitudinal survey, was drawn. Nonparametric analyses revealed significant differences in adolescent perceptions of maternal and paternal closeness and maternal perceptions of maternal and paternal closeness. Logistic regression analyses revealed that adolescents' perceptions of parental engagement (maternal and paternal closeness, monitoring, communication, and involvement) significantly affected their sexual choices (age of sexual debut, use of birth control, condoms, and multiple partners). The results of this study can be used to initiate positive social change by informing parents, program developers, and researchers. Developing strategies to guide parents and adolescents to develop positive perceptions of the interactions, closing the gap between adolescent and parental perceptions of interactions, will help reduce adolescent risky sexual behaviors, thereby benefiting the individuals, families, and the community.

Abstract (sommario):

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Adolescent romantic love has been a popular theme in classic literature, poems, songs, movies, and plays, but scientific research on this topic only began a decade ago. Most studies have focused on adolescent sexuality but some research has also observed that the relational and developmental aspects of adolescent romantic relationships has played an important role in the formation of identity, autonomy, social competence, personal achievement, interpersonal relationships, and affective states. Despite this, few studies have explored how adolescents define, perceive, and experience the meaning of romantic love. In this phenomenological study, in-depth interviews were performed with eight middle adolescent females who had experienced romantic love within the past year. The results demonstrated that adolescent romantic love carries similar themes found in adult romantic love (e.g. intimacy, limerence, and infidelity), but also included themes that were specific to the adolescent developmental stage (i.e. idealization, realization, and individuation), and themes that were archetypal (i.e. personal development and externalized love). This study also explored the relationship between sex and romantic love, family influences on romantic relationship constructs, and the impact the media has on developing romantic motifs. As a result of experiencing romantic love, participants felt a personal transformation, admitted to experiencing a wider array of emotional experiences (both positive and negative), and recognized the difference between their idealized fantasies of romantic love and their actual experience of romantic love. Romantic relationships provided the participants with an opportunity to learn inter-personal relationships as well as to explore their intra-psychic world.

Keywords: adolescent romantic love, romantic relationships, phenomenological.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examined the process of identity development in secondary school adolescents. Identity formation can be regarded as a central developmental task during adolescence. Psychological maturity and a functional personality depend on the effective solution of the identity crisis. The process of identity formation is, however, complicated by various trends in modern society. This is particularly true for South Africa in its present transitional phase. This study was undertaken due to various research deficiencies, and because a thorough knowledge of the process of identity formation during adolescence is of vital importance for educators on all levels. Based on an extensive literature study the concepts identity and identity development are described, and research findings on identity development during adolescence are reviewed. The focus of the empirical investigation is on four selected domains of identity development, namely future career, religion, friendships and dating. Two objective questionnaires, the Ackermann Identity status Inventory (AISI) (which was designed by the researcher) and the Dellas Identity Status Inventory (DISI), and a semi-structured interview were used to determine the identity status of adolescents. A third questionnaire was administered in order to determine adolescents r evaluation of the importance of various identity domains. The research group included all the standard 7 and 10 pupils (N - 1152) from 6 Afrikaans medium secondary schools in the Southwestern Cape. From this group a stratified sample of 96 pupils was taken for the interview. When selecting the research groups three variables were taken into account, namely sex, age, and residential area. Some of the most important findings include the following: Adolescents manifest different patterns of identity development in different domains. Identity development should therefore be investigated separately in different domains. There are significant differences in the identity status of standard 7 and standard 10 pupils. Only minor differences in identity status development exist between the sexes. No significant differences in identity status were found between rural and urban adolescents. Regarding the religious domain the research group had a strong tendency towards identity foreclosure. This finding has important implications for religious educators. various implications for education were pointed out.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die proses van identiteitsontwikkeling by skoolgaande adolessente is in hierdie studie ondersoek.

Abstract (sommario):
Previous research has focused on developmental trends in parent-adolescent conflict without extensively describing individual differences in conflict. The current study tested child factors, parent factors, contextual factors, and adolescence-specific factors as concurrent correlates and longitudinal predictors of parent-adolescent conflict. Participants include 218 mother-child dyads, adolescents’ mean age (11years, 11months). Parent and adolescent data was collected during the summers following the adolescents’ 5th and 6th grade years. All four groups of variables were associated with parent-adolescent conflict. The child group of factors emerged as the most consistent group of variables concurrently and longitudinally.

Abstract (sommario):
Current treatments of parent-adolescent conflict and autonomy development neglect the active role adolescents can play in managing conflict. The present study tests a conceptual model based on developmental theory. Dating is postulated as a salient source of conflict for parents and middle adolescents. Adolescents will utilize cognitive strategies to achieve dating-related goals. These strategies include both neutral (talking and selective disclosure) and negative (lying and using friends to cover for you) forms of filtering information parents receive in order to achieve their dating-related goals. General developmental and domain-specific factors were postulated to directly affect as well as moderate the effects of this selective sharing of information on conflict frequency and intensity. These moderators included intrapersonal (desire for autonomy and importance of boy/girlfriend) and dyadic (cohesion and dating rule satisfaction) factors. This model was tested with a diverse sample of 325 10th and 12th graders attending public high schools in suburban and rural settings. Only adolescents in current dating relationships were included. Results provide support for the conceptualization of adolescents as active managers of conflict. The degree to which adolescents filter information about dating in order to achieve their dating-related goals affects both the frequency and intensity of conflict. However, intrapersonal and dyadic variables moderate these effects. The proposed set of predictors accounted for as much as 40% of the variance in intensity of dating-related conflict, and as little as 28 percent of the variance in the frequency of general conflict. The importance of developmentally-relevant, domain-specific measurement of conflict was demonstrated. The significant grade and gender interactions with the variables in the model suggest the importance of examining developmental and socialization influences on conflict processes.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the present investigation was to examine the implications of adoption status upon the adjustment of adolescents, with a focus on transracial adoptees. Based upon secondary analyses of a nationally collected data set, three levels of analyses were undertaken to investigate group differences between: (a) adoptees and non-adoptees, (b) transracially adopted adolescents and same-race adopted adolescents and, (c) specific racial groupings of adopted children and their parents across a broad range of adjustment measures. The results indicated some evidence supporting increased maladjustment of adoptees compared to their non-adopted counterparts. Yet, when comparing groups of adopted adolescents, the results suggested that racial differences between adoptees and their adoptive parents do not exacerbate developmental risks related to adjustment. Support was also found for significant age and gender influences upon adjustment variables. The implications of the findings are discussed.

Shaffer, Carla. "A Qualitative Analysis of Latina Adolescents' and their Mothers' Perspectives on Adolescent Dating Violence". VCU Scholars Compass, 2013. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/3007.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Adolescent dating violence is a prevalent and disconcerting reality for many adolescents. Communication with others (e.g., parents, older siblings, friends) about dating violence may buffer some negative outcomes associated with experiencing dating violence. Although researchers are attending more to this public health problem, what we know about the messages that adolescents receive about dating violence is limited, especially for Latina teens. To address this gap in the literature, 18 Latina adolescents (14-17 years) and their mothers participated in semi-structured interviews to explore their beliefs about what dating violence means to them, messages that are shared about dating violence with mothers and friends, adolescents’ help seeking preferences and behaviors, and reasons for and against talking with parents about problems in dating relationships. Interviews were transcribed and coded for emergent themes. Participants described many examples of problems in dating relationships including some traditional forms of dating violence (e.g., physical harm) and some advancing forms of dating abuse (e.g., aggression through social media). Messages that Latina adolescents receive from parents and friends include advice to “try to work it out or get out of the relationship” and “talk to someone.” Barriers to seeking help from parents and others included “worry about parent’s response” and “lack of closeness or trust.” Themes of supports to seeking help from parents and others included having a “close and trusting relationship” and having had “an established pattern of communication.” Latina adolescents also suggested they may prefer to seek help for problems in dating situations from friends and older siblings. Results suggest that Latina adolescents and their mothers may be knowledgeable about problems in dating situations. However, the messages that Latina adolescents receive differs by who is giving the message and Latina teens may hesitate talking to their parents about problems in dating if they fear negative parental reactions or they do not sense that parents can effectively facilitate the conversations. Given that many victims of dating violence do not tend to disclose their dating problems or seek help, these results highlight the importance of educating parents on how to promote open and effective communication. Results also highlight the importance of informing peers and siblings on how to respond when their friends/siblings experience dating problems. Finally, results suggest implications for primary prevention programs guided by support for culturally tailored interventions.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: According to Hurlock ( in Louw, Gerdes & Meyer, 1985), traditional society has a larger number of prescribed values and rules of behaviour than is the case in modern society. In modern society the onus rests on the individual who is expected to direct his behaviour in accordance with the values of his choice. The individual has to accept responsibility for determining his own values. This may create problems for the adolescent because he will be confronted by a wide range of diverse values without the benefit of guidelines or rules to tell him which of those values should be accepted and which should rather be avoided. Against this background it becomes clear why the internalization of moral values, as they develop, is of utmost importance to the adolescent. In this study an attempt has been made to investigate the relationship between stage of moral development and locus of control within a group of Afrikaans-speaking adolescents. The study has further attempted to determine the influence of intellectual ability on the relationship between stage of moral development and locus of control. Males and females were also compared with respect to moral development and locus of control. The sample comprised 193 white, Afrikaans-speaking grade eleven pupils. Seventy-six were boys and 117 girls. The subjects were selected from three high schools situated in three different towns and/or cities. All the subjects came from complete families in which both biological parents were present. Taylor's Reasons for Action Questionnaire (1978) was used to determine the stage of moral development. This questionnaire is based on Lawrence Kohlberg's six stages of moral development which in itself developed from the cognitive-developmental structural approach to moral development. The Rotter Internal-External Locus of Control Questionnaire was used to measure the level of locus of control. Intelligence test scores, as measured by the New South African Group Test, were obtained from the E119 records at the various schools. The responses to a biographical questionnaire were used to facilitate the demarcation of the sample. The results of the study indicated that on average the sample as a whole, functions on a conventional moral level. A significantly negative correlation (r(193) = -,28; P < ,001) was found between locus of control and level of moral developement. This indicates that within this group of Afrikaans-speaking adolescents an internal locus of control is associated with a higher level of moral development whilst and external locus of control is associated with a lower level of moral development. In this study intelligence had little or no influence on the relationship between level of moral development and locus of control. This supports the view of Kohlberg (1969) that there is a curved line relationship between the level of moral judgement and intellectual ability. Finally it may be said with a 95% degree of certainty, that there is a significant gender difference in respect of the construct of moral development. The girls used in this sample displayed a more developed level of moral development than the boys.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis developed and pilot tested the effectiveness of a psychosocial intervention, the Making Relationships Work (MRW) Workshop. The MRW has two aims. At the interpersonal level, MRW seeks to enhance the quality of the relationships of the adolescents who participate in the workshop. At the psychological level, MRW seeks to foster the development (or enhancement) of a sense of identity and intimacy among the adolescents who participate in the workshop. The MRW Workshops consist of a psychosocial group intervention that includes skills and knowledge development, perspective taking, and group experiential exercises. Subjects consisted of 26 late adolescents. A within-subjects design (pre-post-follow up) was used to assess the effectiveness, efficacy and utility of the MRW as measured by the Identity Domain Survey (IDS), SCL-90 (a psychological symptom distress checklist), Relationship Quality Scale (RQS), Relationship Closeness Inventory (RCI), Internal-External Locus of Control Measure (I-E), and two MRW Evaluation forms. One-way ANOVAs were performed with results indicating less distress ratings on the IDS and the SCL-90. No significant results were found on the RQS, RCI and I-E. Finally, the evaluation forms of the workshop revealed very positive ratings.

Abstract (sommario):
Adolescent offenders commit a significant number of physical and sexual assaults every year. A critical task for researchers and clinicians is to understand the distinct pathways that lead to these serious types of offending. The current study attempts to test the importance of these different pathways by comparing violent, violent sex, non-violent sex, and non-violent offenders based on SAVRY risk items, reoffending, and effects of treatment. A sample of 517 adolescents on probation was assessed for several risk factors (i.e., anger management, ADHD, low empathy/remorse) by probation officers. Recidivism over 12 months was assessed from official records. Results indicated that after controlling for race, groups differed on several risk factors, with significant differences noted between violent and non-violent sex offenders for anger management and attention deficit/hyperactivity problems, as well as violent sex offenders and all other offenders for low empathy/remorse. In comparison to non-violent offenders, violent offenders had more any re-offense and violent re-offense. While risk factors partially predicted the relationship between offender and recidivism, treatment did not moderate this relationship.
