Abstract (sommario):

At Republic 519a-521b, Socrates claims that each guardian must return from his/her contemplation to run Kallipolis. Quite reasonably, Glaucon objects that they would be making the guardian's life worse than it could be. This is sometimes referred to as “the happy philosopher problem”. But rather than answering Glaucon, Socrates admonishes him that their focus is instead on the role of the class of guardians and the happiness of the whole city. It turns out this admonition is the last in a string of similar admonitions that Socrates gives to his interlocutors. This paper examines Socrates' admonition to Glaucon, and its relation to Socrates’ other warnings to focus on the happiness of the city. By examining these admonitions, we can defend Socrates' dismissal of Glaucon's question and the happy philosopher question at 519d. The paper concludes by examining a few strategies for interpreting Socrates’ reluctance to engage Glaucon’s question.

Abstract (sommario):

This article aims to understand what the concept of the infallibility of prophets and messengers by seeing some interpretations of some verses contained in the Qoran are considered as ‘itâb (admonition/warning) for one of the prophets, he is the prophet Muhammad pbu. The data of this study was obtained through primary literature, it is an interpretation literature (kitab tafsir) of classic interpreter (mufassir) and some modern interpreters. This study was discussed in the descriptive-comparative analysis by using the infallibility (‘ismah )theory . Initially, the writer described admonition’s verses that will be studied by comparing it with two other interpretations, and then analyzed it. Thus it was found that interpreters differed in recognizing the exictence of admonition’s verses to the prophet Muhammad pbu in the Qoran. Finally, the study has analyzed and was found that the admonitions were not for a mistake or a sin that will eliminate the infallibility attribute that had attached to him, but it was as manifestations of the compassion of Allah to the Prophet in order to not too forces his self in preaching, because however he had do all the commands of Allah to convey all of his message or revelation.

This article discusses a privately owned manuscript of St Francis's collection of addresses known as the Admonitions in the context of the nature of the work, the textual transmission of Francis's writings, his method of composition and other manuscripts of the Admonitions, especially those dating from the thirteenth century. It is argued that the manuscript antedates Francis's canonisation in 1228, is the earliest known manuscript containing the Admonitions and indeed the earliest manuscript of any of Francis's more substantial works. The article publishes the text and provides facsimiles of the manuscript.

Herein, I intend to capture highlights shared with my academic and research colleagues over the 60 years I devoted initially to my graduate and postdoctoral training and then to academic endeavors starting as an assistant professor in a new medical school at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). During this period, the Department of Pharmacology emerged from a division within the Department of Medicine to become the first basic science department, solely within the School of Medicine at UCSD in 1979. As part of the school's plans to reorganize and to retain me at UCSD, I was appointed as founding chair. Some years later in 2002, faculty, led largely within the Department of Pharmacology and by practicing pharmacists within UCSD Healthcare, started the independent Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences with a doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program, where I served as the founding dean. My career pathway, from working at my family-owned pharmacy to chairing a department in a school of medicine and then becoming the dean of a school of pharmacy at a research-intensive, student-centered institution, involved some risky decisions. But the academic, curricular, and accreditation challenges posed were met by a cadre of creative faculty colleagues. I offer my experiences to individuals confronted with a multiplicity of real or imagined opportunities in academic health sciences, the related pharmaceutical industry, and government oversight agencies.

Abstract (sommario):

In Poland, probation officers have the power to issue admonitions to convicted offenders. The prerequisite for its use is the fulfilment of the conditions referred to in Article 173 § 3 of the Polish Criminal Executive Code. According to the intention of the framers, it was supposed to discipline the convicted person so that they would observe the law in force and, in the period of probation, submit to the obligations imposed on them. Since this legal institution has been in force for almost 10 years, it has been decided to have a look at how it functions in practice. For that purpose, research was carried out, in which an attempt was made to establish how court probation officers apply the institution of admonition to convicted offenders and whether it is an effective tool in influencing their behaviour. The research included 151 cases in which probation officers applied admonition in 2015-2017. The research was carried out on the basis of an analysis of probation files. As a result, it was established, among other things, that in some of the cases a change in the convicted person’s (offender’s) behaviour can be observed after the admonition was given. It was also noted that the effectiveness of an admonition is affected by the manner in which it is given.

Abstract This study reveals a mosaic of artful rearrangement, rewriting, and creative interpretation of prophetic texts within the Admonitions of the Damascus Document. Many explicit quotations from scriptures and implicit allusions are interwoven and interpreted in the Admonitions through various methods, including pesher interpretation. The textual backdrop of the Admonitions helps us to determine the borders of the different discourses and to define the structure of the composition, which is divided into ten discourses built in a symmetrical chiastic structure. Each discourse comprises layers of quotations and allusions arranged around a central explicit pesher. Therefore, the explicit pesher in each discourse should not be viewed as an isolated pesher, as some have claimed, but rather as part of a larger thematic pesher. Each discourse/thematic pesher presents a different aspect of the work’s central theme: a polemic introduction to the rules of interpreting the Torah.

Abstract (sommario):

The article primarily deals with a textual connection between two admonitory texts 4QSapiential Admonitions B (4Q185) and 4QAdmonition on the Flood (4Q370). Beside the existence of this connection very little has been done to explore it and even the direction of the influence is still open to question. This connection will be thoroughly analyzed here, in order to appreciate fully its importance for understanding the purpose of the fragmentary individual texts and the applied editing practices. It will be shown that 4QAdmonition on the Flood was one of the main sources used in the composition of 4QSapiential Admonitions B that was radically edited (e. g., additions, omissions and recontextualizing) and combined with Proverbial wisdom traditions. The purpose of this editorial activity was to create a synthesis out of the more traditional wisdom thinking and the Torah-oriented deuteronomic parenesis, as was also done by, for example, Ben Sira in his own wisdom composition around the same time period.

The article analyzes the Latin Sources of an admonition “Pripadkov kotorye byse pry slouzhbie bozhoi mogly prytrafiti roz’viezane” (Resolving difficult cases that might happen during worship). Published for the first time as a part of a larger Uniate manual for the priests in Sluzhebnik (Vilno 1617), the given admonition in an edited form became an organic component of the so-called “Izvestie uchitel’noe, kako dolzhenstvuet iereyu i diakonu sluzhenie w tserkvi svyatoi sovershati” (Instructive admonition how a priest and deacon should perform holy service in the church) in the Russian Rituals. As A.V. Petrovskij has already found out, a significant part of the cases analyzed in “Pripadki” that might happen during worship or Communion have parallels in apostolic, patristic, and conciliar decrees, in works of church literature, which have long existed in the Eastern Christian area. The author of the article argues, that the very effort of systematizing those difficult cases, also their analysis in the context of liturgical editions was borrowed by the compilers of “Pripadki” from the Latin tradition. And the main sources were the headings (rubricae) of the post-Tridentine “Missale Romanum” (Rome 1570). “Summa casuum conscientiae” by the Spanish Jesuit, cardinal Francisco de Toledo became another important source for the Uniate compilation: both for “Pripadki”, as for the whole Uniate manual for the priests Vilna 1617. Familiarity of the Uniate compilers with the work of the Spanish Jesuit is also confirmed by the content of another work, namely – an instruction for the priests how to perform the sacraments in “Trebnik” (Vilna 1617–1618). The given fact allows us to consider both admonitions as a part of a broader program for the elaboration of practical manuals for the Uniate clergy at the beginning of the 17th Century. The article also suggests who could be the author of these compilations.

The language used in the context of the classroom is a language that has its own purpose from languages used in other contexts. The most basic main objective of using language in the classroom is the transfer of knowledge. In connection with the use of female teacher speech features in Indonesian language learning interactions in the classroom, female teachers have differences in language with male teachers. The use of language in gender is not only related to linguistic preferences, but also to psychological matters of speakers. Men are depicted as speaking more assertive, mature, and like to speak openly with correct vocabulary. In contrast to women's language that is not firm, is not openly and careful when expressing something, and often uses more subtle and polite words or through gestures. The purpose of this study is to describe the sentences of praise used to smooth commands and admonitions by utilizing the superpolite form feature in Indonesian language learning interactions. The type of research used in this research is descriptive research because it is carried out on several research subjects on a certain background, namely the praising event for smoothing orders and admonitions by utilizing the superpolite form feature in the context of Indonesian language learning interactions in class. This study aims to discuss the use of one of the features of women's language, namely the superpolite form feature in the speech function of praising female teachers in the interaction of Indonesian language learning in the classroom. There are two types of functions of praising utterances, namely (1) the function of smoothing commands and (2) the function of smoothing admonitions. The function of smoothing commands and smoothing reprimands as part of the praising utterances spoken by female teachers is dominated by markers of please, beg, and please.

The research problem is to determine the ability of geography teachers in managing classes at SMA Negeri 2 Tondano. This study used qualitative research methods with the research informants is geography teachers, amounting to 3 teachers with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that 1) the skills to create a good learning atmosphere, the geography teacher of SMA Negeri 2 Tondano have provided instructions, given admonitions, gave verbal and visual attention and focused attention in learning, 2) the ability of class mastery in the learning process with steps the teacher does, namely creating good interactions, creating a good atmosphere, creating learning flexibility and instilling discipline, 3) the ability to manage the interaction of learning activities, the steps taken by the teacher, namely focusing attention in learning, providing clear instructions about learning, providing reinforcement, provide motivation, and give admonitions and organize the learning space, 4) classroom arrangement skills with the steps the teacher takes in relation to class arrangement skills in the form of arranging student seating positions and preparing students to receive lessons, arranging the location of facilities who are in the classroom and organize the study room.

The speeches and writings of Jacob clearly show that he remembered the admonitions given to him by his dying father and that he shared Lehi’s teachings—including some of his verbiage—with other members of the family. Este artigo, como uma abordagem entre as tantas possíveis do franciscanismo, pretende fazer uma análise do texto das Admoestações de São Francisco nos números I e II e mostrar como é possível o desenvolvimento de uma erótica, de um discurso sobre o erotismo próprio ao homem enquanto seu vigor, que é levada a cabo como uma experiência que está no cerne da forma de vida franciscana. Para isso usamos aportes da teologia moral, da ética e da filosofia, especialmente a filosofia do erotismo de Bataille, para reconstruirmos em termos categoriais um pouco mais precisos aquilo que, com toda a tradição franciscana, acreditamos só ser plenamente conhecido mediante uma compreensão existencial. ADMONITIONS OF SAINT FRANCIS I-II: A EROTIC SPIRITUALITY This article, as an approach among the many possible in the franciscan studies, intends to make analysis of the Admonitions of Saint Francis in the numbers I and II showing how the development of an erotics discourse is possible in a discourse on eroticism insofar the man’s force itself, which is carried out as an experience that is at the heart of the franciscan form of life. For this we use contributions of moral theology, ethics and philosophy, especially the Batallie’s philosophy of eroticism, to rebuild in categorical terms what we believe, with all the franciscan tradition, only be fully known through an existential understanding.

AbstractThe texts written for the instruction of women in ancient China are some of the earliest examples of didactic sources aimed at a female readership to be produced anywhere in the world. The oldest surviving texts in the transmitted tradition date to the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE). However, in 2010, Peking University acquired a cache of manuscripts written on bamboo, one of which, the Jiaonü (Instructions to women), predates these Han dynasty admonitions texts by several centuries. This paper provides a full translation of this important text, a discussion of the historical and cultural context in which it was produced, and examines its relationship with the later similar works in the transmitted tradition. The Jiaonü throws new light on the way in which women were educated in appropriate gender roles in ancient China.

I.Nasimi, a great Azerbaijani poet living in the XIV century, believed in power of a word and skillfully used it as a poet. Nasimi's philosophical thoughts encourage people in moral development. His thoughts sound like human values rather than only admonitions. Dynamics of Nesimi's poems are both literary peak of his creativity and the centre of his literary personality. Determinations as well as resolution to keep one’s promise and courageous characters in the poet's ghazals are factors that influence the formation of students' outlook.

The leadership literature is replete with admonitions that successful leadership requires confidence. While that may be true, striving for greater confidence runs the risk of overconfidence. Overconfident leaders put themselves, their teams, and their organizations at risk. There are reasons to be skeptical that greater confidence improves performance, and substantial reasons to worry that greater confidence can undermine preparation. This article offers suggestions to avoid being fooled by overconfident charlatans. It also offers strategies for wise and honest leaders who would like to be both confident and truthful.

ABSTRACT Mark Twain’s obsession with and popularization of Isaac Bromley’s original horsecar jingle not only inspired an entire school of horsecar poems but also parodies of them that satirized political campaigns, public corruption, organized labor, vices such as gambling and alcoholism, the work of newspaper editors as well as admonitions to respect the law. During the Great War, parodies of the jingle commended the women knitting brigades on the home front. The parodies also led to the introduction of jingles in advertising. The original rhyme has survived in the public imagination for generations.

The article examines the last work (actually a political testament) of Enrique José Varona (1849–1933) and its role in the debate on Cuba's "men of colour" after the fall of President Gerardo Machado's regime in August 1933. The debate touched upon the slogan of «Negro minority» self-determination proclaimed by the Communist Party of Cuba. In subsequent publications, the text of Varona's testament was changed. The article discusses the reasons and nature of such editing, related to Cuban ethno-political history and its interpretation after 1959.

Delinquent behaviour is predominantly an expression of adolescent developmental phases, but at the same time a possible entry into criminal careers. Where socio-educational measures and admonitions no longer help, society reacts with youth detention and imprisonment as a last resort, in doing so it brings the young people into an environment of violence and power. The concept of the socio-educational pilgrimage as an alternative measure to imprisonment takes the young people out of this context and offers space for reflection and self-efficacy. In this article, different concepts of Learning Walks for young offenders are discussed and theoretically analysed.

In this paper we analyse, on a transcendental and material basis, religious admonitions and priorities pertaining to the soul’s purity and the body’s (un)cleanness as constituents of dominant or challenging world views and behavioural systems. They are approached as a complex and historically determined social topic rather than as a simply cultural one. Explanations are also attempted regarding the differing Christian and Islamic soul-body perceptions and the syncretistic practices in the late-medieval Balkans, when Christian (Hesychasm) and Islamic mystic versions were widely diffused. Finally, we trace the religious imprint of relevant corporeal stances in today societies.

The article comprises a translation into Russian of the first chapter from the section on metaphysics / theology from the treatise al-Isharat wat-tanbihat (Remarks and Admonitions) by the most eminent Islamic philosopher Abu Ali b. Sina (Avicenna) (d. 1037 AD). This chapter comprises the Avicenna’s expression of his theological and philosophical teaching. In the books is offered Avicenna’s distinction between the essence and existence, the subdivision of the essence into the “possible” and “necessary”. The text also contains the Avicessa’s proof of the existence of God, which is called the proof of the veracious (burhan as-saddiqin).

When the critical legal studies (CLS) movement emerged in the United States, many in the legal community were shocked by the movement’s radical calls to remake legal education. But the movement also presented bold criticisms of quantitative legal scholarship and calculation in law that have proven remarkably prophetic. This article resuscitates the CLS movement’s concerns over “scientific law” in one of the movement’s most canonical works: the Critical Legal Studies Symposium issue of the Stanford Law Review in 1984. Along the way, this article explores the scope and limits of CLS admonitions regarding quantitative research and legal problem solving for the present day.

Personality of Hryhorii Savych Skovoroda exists outside of time and space, and constantly surprises us with a sharp mind, far-sightedness and relevance of ideas. We can make such a conclusion according not on his literary heritage only, but also on the pedagogical beliefs and admonitions. Analyzing philosopher’s pedagogical ideas, we can see clear parallels with today’s tendencies in the development of education, in particular, the problems solved by the New Ukrainian School. The presented article highlights some of the main H. S. Skovoroda’s pedagogical views, which are reflected in the system of the New Ukrainian School.

This article is a case study of the engraving in the Tangut Buddhist text Xibi State Preceptor's Compendium of Admonitions to the World 推旃随鬱翩饒毒 written by the Buddhist monk of high rank, State Preceptor Xibi Baoyuan. For a long period of time left and right parts of this illustration existed separately in two editions of this book. For this reason, this text’s author in the illustration was identified incorrectly. The study of this engraving’s fragments allowed to join two engraving parts in their original form and helped to identify the genuine portrait of Xibi.
