Testo completoBased on Hofstede's findings, this study breaks down Kogut and Singh's index of cultural distance, examining implications for acquisition performance of each individual dimension. Hypotheses are formulated, and based on deal data covering 488 acquisitions with American companies as acquirers, tested through linear regression. We find support for a positive relationship between cultural distance of power distance and performance, and an inverse relationship between cultural distance of masculinity and performance. Significant results are not obtained for the remaining dimensions.

Testo completoThree related areas of research are explored and integrated in this work: first, a theoretical study explores the feature-geometric representation of sonorant and non-sonorant laterals, based on their behavior in a variety of phonological processes cross-linguistically, and suggests that [lateral] is not a phonological feature, but rather that laterality is a phonetic property that derives from a specific feature-geometric representation; second, an experimental study investigates the acquisition of phonemic contrasts by English children and demonstrates that segmental representations are acquired in a uniform order that is consistent with properties of Feature Geometry; finally, a series of experimental studies examines the perception and acquisition of the English /l-r/, /b-v/, /p-f/, /f-v/ and /s-theta/ contrasts by native speakers of Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Korean.
The findings from each of these studies are synthesized to obtain a comprehensive picture of how segmental representations are acquired and how this L1 knowledge impinges on the acquisition of L2 phonemes: it is argued that the monotonic acquisition of feature-geometric structure by young children restricts their sensitivity to particular non-native contrasts, and the continued operation of this existing feature geometry in adult speech perception constrains which non-native contrasts adult learners will be sensitive to in the L2 input and, therefore, capable of acquiring; the circumstances in which the native grammar facilitates perception of non-native contrasts and in which acquisition is possible are also discussed.

The pharmaceutical industry is now confronted with a discontinuous time period, especially in terms of its technology. In order to maintain their advantageous positions in the industry, pharmaceutical companies have to invest not only in internal R&D but also in external sources, since technologies in the industry are too broad to enable a company to cover all of the new technologies. Allotment of investment in internal and external R&D, however, is hard to determine; moreover, the selection of targets and styles of external technology acquisition by pharmaceutical companies requires deep deliberation on all the scientific and business aspects. In this thesis, I have analyzed the correlation between technology acquisition activities and the internal technological strength, or product development, in nine pharmaceutical companies in three countries: U.S., Japan, and Germany. Styles of technology acquisition deals vary among the three countries. German companies showed the most aggressive technology acquisition strategies in overall technology deals. U.S. companies exhibit strong technology acquisition strategies with prominent equity investment deals. Japanese companies were discreet about their technology acquisition deals, although they showed a similar degree of eagerness for product acquisition. The number of technology acquisition deals by Japanese companies, however, has increased during the past two or three years. A positive correlation between the number of all deals and product development (the number of pre-clinical drug candidates) was detected. On the other hand, there is no clear correlation between technology creation deals or technology frontier deals and product development. In order to assimilate the growing amount of external property, pharmaceutical companies must consider setting up an appropriate management organization because the deals between biotech enterprises and pharmaceutical companies involve dissimilar organizations in terms of culture, size, power, and expertise. I studied the organization of alliance management in Eli Lilly as an example.

Testo completoPAN, Personal Area Network, may be described as the connection of personal devices, allowing information exchange over short ranges. This term is used on several of todays short range wireless technologies like Bluetooth, ZigBee, Infrared etc. In this thesis we look in to how Bluetooth as a PAN technology may be used to enrich context information to a person. Context is information that can be used to characterize the situation of an entity. It may be acquired in many ways, e.g. from user input (status in an IM client), sensed (temperature, location, heart rate), or derived (e.g. combination of location and time of day). Several scenarios showing the benefits of context aware computing will be presented, and proposals on how Bluetooth may fit in as an enabling technology will be evaluated. In the end, a design and implementation showing Bluetooth in context acquisition will be presented.

Spread-spectrum systems with large transmission bandwidth present significant challenges from the standpoint of achieving synchronization before communication commences. This research investigates a rapid acquisition procedure that exploits the multipath to aid the synchronization. In particular, we consider a class of serial search strategies and determine the optimal search procedure for the uncertainty space consisting of N[sub]s total cells and N[sub]Q correct cells. We derive closed-form expressions for both the minimum and maximum mean acquisition times (MATs) and the conditions for achieving these limits. We prove that the fixed-step serial search (FSSS), with the step size N[sub]Q, achieves the near-optimal MAT. We also prove that the conventional serial search, in which consecutive cells are tested sequentially, and the FSSS with the step size N[sub]s - 1 should be avoided as they result in the maximum MAT. Analytical tools used in the research include Markov chain diagrams, the transformation of feasible spaces, and convexity theory. Our results apply to all signal-to-noise ratio values, regardless of the detection-layer decision rule and the fading distribution. The impact of this research is significant for the design, implementation, and deployment of spread-spectrum systems.

This work serves as the first comprehensive investigation into typically developing children's acquisition of subject-to-subject (StS) raising. In particular, it asks how English-speaking children come to comprehend a StS raised sentence like (1) versus its semantically equivalent unraised counterpart (2), and how the presence of an experiencer-phrase affects interpretation (3): (1) John[subscript i] seems [t[subscript i] to be dancing]. (2) It seems that John is dancing. (3) John[subscript i] seems to Mary [t[subscript i] to be dancing]. The acquisition of StS raising is of particular bearing given renewed interest in the acquisition of verbal passives, which share syntactic traits with StS raising and which have been argued to develop late under genetic guidance. Using sentence-picture matching and truth-value judgment experiments, the following comprehension results obtain: e Unraised sentences are acquired early, with most three-year-old children demonstrating mastery. - Sentences involving StS raising over an experiencer (ROE) are delayed until around age seven, with many children incorrectly interpreting them as involving raising-to-object (RtO) syntax. e Sentences involving StS raising with no experiencer (RNE) are likewise delayed until around age seven, with many children incorrectly interpreting them as involving either subject control or copular syntax. - Subject control sentences are acquired early, by at least age three. - The delayed acquisition of StS raising (ROE and RNE) appears to be developmentally linked with the delayed acquisition of verbal passives. The noted delay in comprehension of StS raising occurs despite the fact that StS raising sentences are found to be relatively common in child-directed speech. These data serve to rule out several grammatical acquisition accounts in the literature that have attempted to capture children's delayed comprehension of verbal passives (e.g. External Argument Requirement Hypothesis, Canonical Alignment Hypothesis, and Universal Freezing Hypothesis). The data, however, are both compatible with and predicted by the Universal Phase Requirement (UPR; Wexler, 2004), a grammatical account on which children are claimed to take all vPs to define strong phases for maturational reasons. Only UPR correctly predicts delay for StS raising (with and without an experiencer-phrase) in early child grammar, and a positive correlation with the acquisition of verbal passives.

Economic agents often do not interact on the basis of some fixed prior information: choosing what to know is a central part of their interaction. The essays composing this thesis provide and apply theoretical tools to understand information as a choice variable. In the first essay on "Unrestricted Information Acquisition," I study costly information acquisition in games where players can acquire information not only about the state, but also about one another's information in a flexible way. Two main patterns emerges. First, in coordination games, players have a strong incentive to learn what others know: for instance, I show that this can explain the onset of phenomena such as bank runs or currency crises. Second, this incentive weakens as the game gets large and players small: for instance, I show that this leads nonfundamental volatility to vanish in many canonical large games. In the second essay on "Endogenous Informational Smallness," I deepen the investigation of unrestricted information acquisition in large games and show that players end up being informationally small in equilibrium. Information is valuable, but also costly: this is the tradeoff that makes information an economic good. Understanding the cost of information is challenging, since it usually reflects unobservable factors such as time, effort, and cognitive resources. In the third co-authored essay on "Rationally Inattentive Preferences," I highlight basic properties of the cost of information that can be assumed without loss of generality and are necessary and sufficient for identification from observable menu-choice data.

Gram-positive bacteria are characterized by a single lipid bilayer with a thick peptidoglycan layer. This group of organisms contains bacteria commonly associated with human infection, including: Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus anthracis and Streptococcus pneumoniae among others. These bacteria have a common system for importing iron in the form of heme, which is acquired by proteins containing heme-binding NEAT (NEAr iron Transporter) domains. The heme acquisition system in S. aureus is termed the Iron Surface Determinant (Isd) system and in L. monocytogenes is termed Heme Binding Protein (Hbp) and Heme/Hemoglobin Uptake Protein (Hup). These proteins work together to obtain heme from hemoglobin and then transport the heme into the cytoplasm via well characterized ABC-transporters. Although there have been clinical trials with antibodies directed against Isd proteins, there are currently no antibiotics targeting iron uptake systems in bacteria in general. Building upon fluorescent approaches for detection of iron uptake in Gram negative organisms, this work develops fluorescent heme acquisition detection in Gram positive organisms. The spectrofluorimetric methodology facilitates the understanding of heme acquisition protein interactions and mechanisms in bacteria. This work could subsequently be used to identify inhibitors of Gram positive bacterial iron uptake systems, and develop a new target for antibiotic action.

Testo completoThe accelerating globalisation has led to an increased number of acquisitions and mergers. This implies changes within the organisation and problems with the implementation process of the new organisation that is taken form. The integration of the companies involved makes it essential to identify and to be aware of the characteristics of different management cultures. Management culture is the way a company is managed influenced by the surrounding culture. Management culture is something that has often been developed since the origin and is permeating the company spirit. This dissertation focuses on the characteristics of American and Swedish management cultures. Ford acquired Volvo Cars in 1999 and in this study Ford is representing the American management culture whereas Volvo is representing the Swedish management culture. The two companies are considered to possess typical characteristics of the management cultures examined. The intention was to analyse how a company’s management culture is affected by an acquisition and if the possible effects are reflected outside the organisation. Examined theories were concentrated into the Management culture model containing five dimensions; Relations, Orientation, Decision-making, Motivation and Loyalty. Hypotheses were developed from the model and the perceptions of Volvo’s suppliers were evaluated through a survey. The results show conformity with the Management culture model, which indicates that Volvo has absorbed distinctive elements of Ford’s management culture. This might indicate that acquisitions between a bigger American company and a smaller Swedish company would imply consequences in the management culture.
