Abstract (sommario):
Abscisic acid (ABA) plays crucial roles in plant development and adaption to environmental stresses. The ABA-responsive element binding protein/ABRE-binding factor and ABA INSENSITIVE 5 (AREB/ABF/ABI5) gene subfamily members, which belong to the basic domain/leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors family, participate in the ABA-mediated signaling pathway by regulating the expression of their target genes. However, information about potato (Solanum tuberosum) AREB/ABF/ABI5 subfamily members remains scarce. Here, seven putative AREB/ABF/ABI5 members were identified in the potato genome. Sequences alignment revealed that these members shared high protein sequence similarity, especially in the bZIP region, indicating that they might possess overlapping roles in regulating gene expression. Subcellular localization analysis illustrated that all seven AREB/ABF/ABI5 members were localized in the nucleus. Transactivation activity assays in yeast demonstrated that these AREB/ABF/ABI5 members possessed distinct transcriptional activity. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA) confirmed that all of these AREB/ABF/ABI5 members could have an affinity to ABRE in vitro. The expression patterns of these AREB/ABF/ABI5 genes showed that they were in response to ABA or osmotic stresses in varying degrees. Moreover, most AREB/ABF/ABI5 genes were induced during stolon swelling. Overall, these results provide the first comprehensive identification of the potato AREB/ABF/ABI5 subfamily and would facilitate further functional characterization of these subfamily members in future work.

Abstract (sommario):
The abscisic acid (ABA)-responsive element binding protein/ABRE-binding factor (AREB/ABF) subfamily members are essential to ABA signaling pathways and plant adaptation to various environmental stresses. Nevertheless, there are no reports on AREB/ABF in jute (Corchorus L.). Here, eight AREB/ABF genes were identified in the C. olitorius genome and classified into four groups (A–D) based on their phylogenetic relationships. A cis-elements analysis showed that CoABFs were widely involved in hormone response elements, followed by light and stress responses. Furthermore, the ABRE response element was involved in four CoABFs, playing an essential role in the ABA reaction. A genetic evolutionary analysis indicated that clear purification selection affects jute CoABFs and demonstrated that the divergence time was more ancient in cotton than in cacao. A quantitative real-time PCR revealed that the expression levels of CoABFs were upregulated and downregulated under ABA treatment, indicating that CoABF3 and CoABF7 are positively correlated with ABA concentration. Moreover, CoABF3 and CoABF7 were significantly upregulated in response to salt and drought stress, especially with the application of exogenous ABA, which showed higher intensities. These findings provide a complete analysis of the jute AREB/ABF gene family, which could be valuable for creating novel jute germplasms with a high resistance to abiotic stresses.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Helminth infections are among the most potent stimulators of Th2-type immune responses and have been widely demonstrated to modify responsiveness to both nonparasite antigens and other infectious agents in a nonspecific manner in infected animals. We investigated the immunomodulatory properties of pseudocoelomic body fluid from adult Ascaris suum gastrointestinal helminths (ABF) and its defined allergen (ABA-1) by examining their effects on the immune response to a heterologous antigen, ovalbumin. Our results indicate that ABF has potent immunomodulatory activity and that the effects observed are consistent with skewing towards a Th2-type response rather than induction of anergy. Our findings show that the immunomodulatory activities of ABF are associated with components other than the major constituent and putative allergen, ABA-1. Furthermore, the allergic responses to ABA-1 are not a result of an intrinsic allergenicity of the protein but are more a reflection of the wider induction of a Th2 response by the infection. Importantly, the induction of interleukin-10 by ABF also suggests that T regulatory cells may play a role in immunomodulation of immune responses by parasitic helminths.

Abstract (sommario):
Rosaceae is an important family containing some of the highly evolved fruit and ornamental plants. Abiotic stress responses play key roles in the seasonal growth and development of plants. However, the molecular basis of stress responses remains largely unknown in Rosaceae. Abscisic acid (ABA) is a stress hormone involving abiotic stress response pathways. The ABRE-binding factor/ABA-responsive element-binding protein (ABF/AREB) is a subfamily of the basic domain/leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factor family. It plays an important role in the ABA-mediated signaling pathway. Here, we analyzed the ABF/AREB subfamily genes in nine Rosaceae species. A total of 64 ABF/AREB genes were identified, including 18, 28, and 18 genes in the Rosoideae, Amygdaloideae, and Maloideae traditional subfamilies, respectively. The evolutionary relationship of the ABF/AREB subfamily genes was studied through the phylogenetic analysis, the gene structure and conserved motif composition, Ka/Ks values, and interspecies colinearity. These gene sets were clustered into four groups. In the Prunus ABF/AREB (PmABF) promoters, several cis-elements related to light, hormone, and abiotic stress response were predicted. PmABFs expressed in five different tissues, except PmABF5, which expressed only in buds. In the dormancy stages, PmABF1, 2, 5 and 7 showed differential expression. The expression of PmABF3, 4 and 6 was positively correlated with the ABA concentration. Except for PmABF5, all the PmABFs were sensitive to ABA. Several ABRE elements were contained in the promoters of PmABF1, 3, 6, 7. Based on the findings of our study, we speculate that PmABFs may play a role in flower bud dormancy in P. mume.

Abstract (sommario):
Basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors of the ABA-responsive element binding factor/ABA-responsive element binding proteins (ABF/AREB) subfamily have been implicated in abscisic acid (ABA) and abiotic stress responses in plants. However, the specific function of ABF/AREB transcription factors under saline–alkaline stress is unclear. Here, we identified four ABF/AREB transcription factors in tomato and found that SlAREB1 strongly responded to both ABA and saline–alkaline stress. To further explore the function of SlAREB1 under saline–alkaline stress, SlAREB1-overexpressing lines were constructed. Compared with wild-type plants, SlAREB1-overexpressing transgenic tomato plants showed reduced malondialdehyde content, increased the relative water content, and alleviated the degradation of chlorophyll under saline–alkaline stress. Importantly, SlAREB1 directly physically interacted with SlMn-SOD, which improved the activity of antioxidant enzymes and increased the scavenging of excess reactive oxygen species. Overall, the overexpression of SlAREB1 increased the antioxidant capacity of the transgenic tomato under saline–alkaline stress.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Previous studies have established that the mitochondrial high mobility group (HMG) protein, Abf2p, of Saccharomyces cerevisiae influences the stability of wild-type (ρ+) mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and plays an important role in mtDNA organization. Here we report new functions for Abf2p in mtDNA transactions. We find that in homozygous Δabf2 crosses, the pattern of sorting of mtDNA and mitochondrial matrix protein is altered, and mtDNA recombination is suppressed relative to homozygous ABF2 crosses. Although Abf 2p is known to be required for the maintenance of mtDNA in ρ+ cells growing on rich dextrose medium, we find that it is not required for the maintenance of mtDNA in ρ− cells grown on the same medium. The content of both ρ+ and ρ− mtDNAs is increased in cells by 50–150% by moderate (two- to threefold) increases in the ABF2 copy number, suggesting that Abf2p plays a role in mtDNA copy control. Overproduction of Abf 2p by ≥10-fold from an ABF2 gene placed under control of the GAL1 promoter, however, leads to a rapid loss of ρ+ mtDNA and a quantitative conversion of ρ+ cells to petites within two to four generations after a shift of the culture from glucose to galactose medium. Overexpression of Abf2p in ρ− cells also leads to a loss of mtDNA, but at a slower rate than was observed for ρ+ cells. The mtDNA instability phenotype is related to the DNA-binding properties of Abf 2p because a mutant Abf 2p that contains mutations in residues of both HMG box domains known to affect DNA binding in vitro, and that binds poorly to mtDNA in vivo, complements Δabf2 cells only weakly and greatly lessens the effect of overproduction on mtDNA instability. In vivo binding was assessed by colocalization to mtDNA of fusions between mutant or wild-type Abf 2p and green fluorescent protein. These findings are discussed in the context of a model relating mtDNA copy number control and stability to mtDNA recombination.

Abstract (sommario):
Two genes encoding the ASABF (Ascarissuumantibacterial factor)-type antimicrobial peptide, abf-1 and abf-2, were identified in Caenorhabditis elegans. Recombinant ABF-2 exhibited potent microbicidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and yeasts. The tissue-specific distribution estimated by immunofluorescence staining and transgenic analysis of a gfp fusion gene (where GFP corresponds to green fluorescent protein) suggested that ABF-2 contributes to surface defence in the pharynx. abf-1 contains a single intron at a conserved position, suggesting that asabf and abf originated from a common ancestor. Both transcripts for abf-1 and abf-2 were detected as two distinct forms, i.e. spliced leader (SL)1-trans-spliced with a long 5′-untranslated region (UTR) and SL-less with a short 5′-UTR. A polycistronic precursor RNA encoding ABF-1 and ABF-2 was detected, suggesting that these genes form an operon. An ‘opportunistic operon’ model for regulation of abf genes, including the generation of short SL-less transcripts, is proposed. In conclusion, C. elegans should have an immune defence system due to the antimicrobial peptides. C. elegans can be a novel model for innate immunity. Furthermore, the combination of biochemical identification in Ascaris suum and homologue hunting in C. elegans should be a powerful method of finding rapidly evolved proteins, such as some immune-related molecules in C. elegans.

Abstract (sommario):
We measured forearm blood flow (ABF) bilaterally on six subjects during 15-min periods of leg exercise and the first 10 min of recovery. One forearm (control) was kept at about 33 degrees C skin temperature in all experiments. In experiments at ambient temperature (Ta) of 15 degrees C, the other arm (experimental) was kept at about 26, 33, and 40 degrees C, respectively, during three successive cycles of exercise and recovery. ABF in the 26 degrees C forearm was linearly related to and averaged 42% of control. The relation of ABF in the 40 degrees C forearm to control ABF showed a bend at control ABF of 4–5 ml X 100 ml-1 X min-1. Below the bend, experimental ABF average 213% of control. Above the bend, experimental ABF averaged 5.09 ml X 100 ml-1 X min-1 above control. In four subjects, after heating the experimental forearm to 40 degrees C, we measured ABF for 25–30 min at rest in Ta of both 15 and 25 degrees C. At 25 degrees C Ta, ABF in the heated forearms rose gradually, but control ABF showed little change. At 15 degrees C Ta, the effect on ABF of local heating to 40 degrees C was much reduced, apparently due to reflex vasoconstrictor signals.

Physiol. 84(1): 82–89, 1998.—Adrenal gland blood flow (ABF) increases during hypoxemia in fetal sheep, but regulation of ABF is poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of splanchnic nerve section on fetal ABF responses to hypoxemia using the fluorescent microsphere (FM) technique. At 125 days of gestation, 14 unanesthetized fetal sheep [bilateral splanchnicotomy (Splx, n = 6) and control (Cont, n = 8)] were injected with FM before and at 60 min of N2-induced hypoxemia (∼40% decrease in fetal arterial [Formula: see text]). Adrenal tissue and reference blood samples were digested and filtered, and FM dye was extracted for spectrometer analysis. Baseline whole, medullary, and cortical ABF for the Cont group were similar to published values using radioactive microspheres and did not differ from Splx values. Hypoxemia increased whole, medullary, and cortical ABF (mean ± SE) from baseline for the Cont group by 281 ± 35, 258 ± 31, and 496 ± 81% ( P < 0.05). The increase for the Splx group was attenuated compared with the Cont group ( P < 0.05) for whole and medullary ABF (139 ± 27 and 43 ± 27%) but not cortical ABF (326 ± 91%). We conclude that 1) the FM technique is valid for measuring fetal ABF and 2) in fetal sheep the splanchnic nerve is not necessary to maintain basal ABF but plays an important role in regulating the hypoxemia-induced increase in ABF through the medullary, but not cortical, ABF response.

Abstract (sommario):
This research aimed to identify the determinants of full breastfeeding (FBF) and any breastfeeding (ABF) cessation before 6 months, through a six-month follow-up of 248 mothers going a postpartum visit. Data were collected by personal interview during the first month and telephone interviews at four and six months postpartum. Cox’s proportional hazards model was used. Not having previous ABF experience, previous ABF duration ≤4 months and worse evaluation of previous experience were associated with cessation of ABF and FBF. Lower educational level was associated with cessation of ABF and the use of pacifiers or occasional breast-milk substitutes with cessation of FBF. Attending childbirth education was a protective factor against early FBF or ABF cessation. Activities supporting breastfeeding should be intensified for mothers with poorer access to information and with negative or without ABF previous experience. The use of pacifiers and not-medically indicated breast milk substitutes should be controlled.

Abstract (sommario):
We have identified a Drosophila transcription factor that binds a sequence element found in the larval promoters of all known alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) genes. DNA sequence analysis of cDNA clones encoding this protein, box A-binding factor (ABF), reveals that it is a member of the GATA family of transcriptional regulatory factors. ABF-binding sites within the D. mulleri and D. melanogaster larval Adh promoters function as positive regulatory elements and in cotransfection experiments, ABF functions as a transcriptional activator. In further support of a role for ABF in the regulation of Adh expression, ABF mRNA is expressed in the embryonic fat body, a tissue that contains high levels of Adh mRNA. Our studies demonstrate that the fat body develops from segmentally repeated clusters of mesodermal cells, which later expand and coalesce to form the mature fat body. These observations establish ABF as the earliest known fat body precursor marker in the Drosophila embryo. Together with the established role of GATA factors during mammalian development, these results suggest that ABF may play a key role in the organogenesis of the fat body.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Proteins of the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) family are required for a number of different developmental pathways, including neurogenesis, lymphopoiesis, myogenesis, and sex determination. Using a yeast two-hybrid screen, we have identified a new bHLH transcription factor, ABF-1, from a human B-cell cDNA library. Within the bHLH region, ABF-1 shows a remarkable conservation with other HLH proteins, including tal-1, NeuroD, and paraxis. Its expression pattern is restricted to a subset of lymphoid tissues, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed lymphoblastoid cell lines, and activated human B cells. ABF-1 is capable of binding an E-box element either as a homodimer or as a heterodimer with E2A. Furthermore, a heterodimeric complex containing ABF-1 and E2A can be detected in EBV-immortalized lymphoblastoid cell lines. ABF-1 contains a transcriptional repression domain and is capable of inhibiting the transactivation capability of E47 in mammalian cells. ABF-1 represents the first example of a B-cell-restricted bHLH protein, and its expression pattern suggests that ABF-1 may play a role in regulating antigen-dependent B-cell differentiation.

Abstract (sommario):
Aim Current treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is suboptimal and causes broad immunosuppression. Therapeutic use of helminths or helminth products has been suggested for autoimmune diseases such as SLE. In the present study, we evaluated possible immunomodulating effects of adult body fluid (ABF) from Ascaris suum on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from SLE patients in an ex vivo setup. Methods PBMCs from SLE patients and healthy controls (HC) were isolated and stimulated ex vivo with ABF and Toll-like receptor agonists or activators of the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) or mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein (MAVS) pathways. After 24 h of incubation, the cytokine profile was analyzed using ELISA and Meso Scale Discovery techniques. Results ABF suppressed production of IL-6, TNF-α, CXCL10, and IL-10 by PBMCs from SLE patients and HCs following stimulation with specific agonists. ABF also reduced IFN-у production by stimulated PBMCs from HCs. Conclusions Our data show that ABF has an immunomodulatory effect on the production of key cytokines in the pathogenesis of SLE. These results suggest that ABF or ABF components hold potential as a novel treatment option for SLE.

Abstract (sommario):
To demonstrate the anti-inflammatory activity of Aronia melanocarpa fruit extract, human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) were treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and the effects of aronia bioactive fraction (ABF®), anthocyanin enriched extract from the fruit of A. melanocarpa, were evaluated. Following pretreatment with ABF® at 10–25 µg /mL, BEAS-2B cells were exposed to LPS and the expression of inflammatory mediators (tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α, interleukin [IL]-6, IL-8, regulated upon activation, normal T cell expressed and presumably secreted [RANTES], IL-1β, cyclooxygenase-2 [COX-2], and inducible nitric oxide synthase [iNOS]) was analyzed. In LPS-stimulated BEAS-2B cells, ABF® pretreatment significantly decreased the mRNA expression of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, RANTES, IL-1β, and COX-2 at doses of 10 and 25 µg/mL. ABF® also attenuated the secretion of TNF- α, IL-6, IL-8, and RANTES protein, as demonstrated by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Western blot analyses revealed the decreased expression of COX-2 and iNOS following ABF® treatment. ROS production was decreased, and the cell cycle was arrested at the G0/G1 and S phases following ABF® pretreatment. Our results suggest that ABF® may have potential as a nutraceutical agent for the suppression of airway inflammation.

Abstract (sommario):
Vascular bypass has long been the standard surgical treatment for symptomatic aortoiliac occlusive disease (AIOD). Conventional wisdom has been that aortobifemoral bypass (ABF) be performed for AIOD because of the inevitable progression of iliac atherosclerosis leading to bypass thrombosis. However, ABF is prone to significant groin incision complications such as infection and lymphocele. The purpose of this study was to determine if aortobiiliac bypass (ABI) to the distal external iliac artery performs similarly to ABF in cases in which minimal atherosclerosis is present in the distal iliac arteries. Of patients undergoing aortic reconstruction for symptomatic AIOD between July 1998 and December 2008, 37 were found to have minimal atherosclerosis in the distal external iliac arteries and underwent ABI. These were compared with patients undergoing ABF using a retrospective matched cohort design. The indication for ABI was claudication in 86.5 per cent and critical limb ischemia in 13.5 per cent. There was no difference found in overall bypass patency. The 1-, 3-, and, 5-year patencies were 97, 92, and 79 per cent in the ABI group and 93, 85, and 76 per cent in the ABF group, respectively ( P = 0.8). The incidence of groin wound complications in the ABF group was 14.6 per cent. ABI to the distal external iliac artery achieves equivalent graft patencies to ABF without added risk of associated groin wound complications. These data suggest that ABI be preferentially considered to ABF in situations when the very distal external iliac arteries are patent and free of significant atherosclerotic disease.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Paternal transmission of the bithorax-complex (BX-C) rearrangement, inversion Uab1, causes a specific dominant gain of function phenotype in most abdominal segments. This represents a case of paternal imprinting since the mutant phenotype will occur only if inversion Uab1 is paternally transmitted. The transformations in males are toward genital arch tissue. For females the transformations are to tissue found on abdominal segment 7 (Ab7) and to structures normally restricted to the genital disc. Ninety-six percent of transformed areas appear on Ab5 and Ab6 in both sexes and on Ab7 in females, coinciding with the Abd-B domain. Four percent of the transformations occurred on Ab1 through Ab4, coinciding with the abd-A domain. The mutant phenotype can be dramatically enhanced by modifying genes such as the posterior BX-C mutant tuh-3. Expressivity is modulated by maternal effect alleles interacting with tuh-3. A region of function within inversion Uab1 appears to be programmed during spermatogenesis to function in a legacy dependent manner during embryogenesis.

Objective: To assess the factors associated with adequate breastfeeding (ABF) among Peruvian mothers during 2019. Materials and Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of the 2019 Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES) database of Peru. ABF was defined based on the recommendations of the World Health Organization, which defined it as starting breastfeeding within the first hour of life and continuing with exclusive breastfeeding for up to 6 months. To determine the factors associated with ABF, a Poisson generalized linear models with log-link function was used. Adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) with their respective 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated. Results: A prevalence of ABF of 48.1% was identified among 11,157 women who reported at least one child in the last five years. Most of them were young (68.6%) and lived in urban areas (65.5%). Furthermore, being unemployed (aPR:1.02; 95% CI:1.00–1.04); residing on the coast, except for Metropolitan Lima (aPR:1.08; 95% CI:1.04–1.11), the highlands (aPR:1.14; 95% CI:1.11–1.18), and the jungle (aPR:1.20; 95% CI: 1.16–1.24); having had a vaginal delivery (aPR:1.30; 95% CI:1.27–1.05); and having two children (aPR:1.03; 95% CI:1.01–1.05) or three or more children (aPR:1.03; 95% CI:1.01–1.05) were associated with a higher frequency of ABF. Conclusions: One out of two women between 18–59 with children performed ABF. The factors associated with ABF were the current occupation, region of residence, type of delivery, and parity. Health policies and strategies should be implemented, considering our results, to promote maternal counseling by health personnel in order to increase the prevalence of ABF in the Peruvian population.

Abstract (sommario):
The cardiac myosin light chain-2 (MLC-2) gene promoter contains several positive and negative cis-acting sequences that are involved in the regulation of its expression. We describe here the properties of two activator sequences, elements A and P, and their DNA-binding factors (ABFs). Element A (CCAAAAGTGG), located at -61, has homology with the evolutionarily conserved sequence CC(A/T)6GG, present in the genes of many contractile proteins. Element P (TAACCTTGAAAGC), located 114 bp upstream of element A, is conserved in both chicken and rat cardiac MLC-2 gene promoters. Deletion mutagenesis demonstrated that these two elements are involved in the positive regulation of MLC-2 gene transcription. At least two sequence-specific element A-binding proteins, ABF-1 and ABF-2, were identified by gel shift analysis of the fractionated cardiac nuclear proteins. ABF-1 binds to element A with strict dependence on the internal element A sequence AAAAGT. In contrast, ABF-2 exhibits a relaxed sequence requirement, as it recognizes the consensus CArG and CCAAT box sequences as well. ABF-2 also recognizes the distal element P despite the fact that the sequences of elements A and P are divergent. DNase I footprinting, methylation interference, and gel shift analyses demonstrated unequivocally that the element A-DNA affinity-purified protein ABF-2 binds to element P with sequence specificity. Since both elements A and P play a positive regulatory role in MLC-2 gene transcription and bind to a single protein (ABF-2), it would appear that ABF-2 is a key transcription factor with the ability to recognize divergent sequence elements involved in a common regulatory pathway during myogenesis.

Abstract (sommario):
Hybridized dentin permits dental treatments that were previously impossible with conventional techniques, opening new frontiers in modern adhesive dentistry. We have investigated the adhesive property of current bonding systems to caries-infected dentin by a microtensile bond strength test (µTBS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and suggested that bonding resin could infiltrate into caries-infected dentin partially to embed carious bacteria within hybrid layers. We have named this concept of caries control as modified sealed restoration (MSR). On the other hand, Kuraray Medical Inc. (Tokyo, Japan) has developed an antibacterial adhesive system (ABF, now marketed in USA as Protect Bond). So as to evaluate the effectiveness of ABF on root caries control, we have examine the microtensile bond strengths (µTBS) of ABF to normal versus carious root dentin and the interfacial morphology by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). ABF could form the hybrid-like structures by infiltrating into the surfaces of the root carious dentin, and the mean value of µTBS of ABF to root carious dentin was 23.0 MPa. These results suggested that MSR combined with ABF might be an advantageous minimal invasive therapy for root caries.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present and solve the problem of adaptive beamforming (ABF) for a uniform linear array (ULA) as an optimization problem. ABF mainly concerns with estimation of weights of antenna array so as to direct the major lobe in the direction of desired user and nulls in the direction of interfering signals with reduced side lobe level (SLL). Design/methodology/approach The potential of gravitational search algorithm is explored to optimize multi-objective fitness function for ABF using MATLAB software. Findings The performance of the algorithm has been compared by considering different number of interference signals at different power levels. The proposed algorithm presents good convergence rate and accurate steering of main lobe and nulls with reduced SLL compared to the well-known ABF technique, namely, minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) and previously reported results. The simulation results are presented in tabular form. Research limitations/implications The present work is limited to simulation. The researchers are encouraged to solve the problem of ABF using the proposed approach in hardware. Originality/value The application of proposed algorithm is to optimize multi-objective function for ABF with reduced SLL in linear antenna arrays.

Abstract (sommario):
ObjectiveTo describe the natural history of afferent baroreflex failure (ABF) based on systematic review of clinical and laboratory data in patients with a diagnosis of ABF at Mayo Clinic Rochester.MethodsWe performed a retrospective chart review of all patients who underwent standardized autonomic reflex testing between 2000 and 2020 and had confirmation of the diagnosis of ABF by an autonomic disorders specialist. Patients were identified using a data repository of medical records. Variables included demographic, all-cause mortality, medications, ABF manifestations, comorbidities, and laboratory (autonomic testing, blood pressure monitoring, echocardiogram, brain imaging, plasma catecholamines, serum sodium level, and kidney function tests).ResultsA total of 104 patients with ABF were identified. Head and neck radiation was the most common etiology (86.5%), followed by neck surgery (5.8%) and other causes (7.7%). The most common findings were hypertension (87.5%), fluctuating blood pressure (78.8%), orthostatic hypotension (91.3%), syncope (58.6%), headache (22.1%), and tachycardia (20.2%). Patients commonly received antihypertensives (66.3%), pressor agents (41.3%), or a combination of both (19.2%). The median latency from completion of radiation to ABF was longer compared to the latency in the surgery group (p < 0.0001). Comorbidities, including complications from neck radiation, were frequently seen and all-cause mortality was 39.4% over a 20-year period.ConclusionsABF should be suspected in patients with prior head and neck cancer treated by radiation or surgery who present with labile hypertension and orthostatic hypotension. Management may require both antihypertensive and pressor medications. The morbidity and mortality in ABF are high.

Abstract (sommario):
To determine the role of neurotransmitter in the response of forearm blood flow (ABF) to local (forearm) skin temperature (Tsk) we measured ABF of six subjects at Tsk from 25 to 40 degrees C before (control) and after brachial plexus block (BPB). Control experiments were conducted in an ambient temperature of 27–29 degrees C, adjusted to minimize the subject's overall thermal sensation. Tsk was regulated by blowing a controlled-temperature airstream through a plastic bag enclosing the arm. We first lowered Tsk to 25 degrees C and after 20 min began to measure ABF with Whitney strain gauges. We then raised Tsk by 2.5 degrees C steps to 40 degrees C and measured ABF every 30 s for at least 10 min at each level of Tsk. Mean ABF rose from 1.1 ml X 100 ml-1 X min-1 at Tsk of 25 degrees C to 2.1 ml X 100 ml-1 X min-1 at 32.5 degrees C to 13.7 ml X 100 ml-1 X min-1 at 40 degrees C in control experiments and from 2.8 to 4.4 to 14.8 ml X 100 ml-1 X min-1 after BPB. The effect of Tsk on ABF was highly significant (P less than 0.0001) but the effect of BPB was not (P approximately equal to 0.2). At thermoneutrality, the effect of Tsk on ABF is largely independent of neural activity, since this effect is unaffected by nerve block.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study were to compare and characterize the prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant (AR)Campylobacterin conventional and antimicrobial-free (ABF) production systems on farms, at slaughter, and in the environment. Fecal and environmental samples were collected from ABF farms (pigs, 1,239; environment, 797) and conventional farms (pigs, 1,650; environment, 1,325). At slaughter, we collected samples from carcasses, including postevisceration swabs, postchill swabs, and mesenteric lymph nodes from ABF systems (postevisceration swabs, 182; postchill swabs, 199; mesenteric lymph nodes, 184) and conventional systems (postevisceration swabs, 272; postchill swabs, 271; mesenteric lymph nodes, 255) at separate processing facilities. We also sampled the processing plant environment, including truck and lairage floor swab samples (ABF, 115; conventional, 90). Overall, a total of 2,908Campylobacterisolates, includingCampylobacter coli(farm, 2,557, 99.8%; slaughter, 341, 98.3%) andCampylobacter jejuni(farm, 4, 0.2%; slaughter, 6, 1.7%), were isolated in the study. There was no significant difference in the prevalence ofCampylobacterbetween ABF and conventionally raised pigs (farrowing,P= 0.20; nursery,P= 0.06; finishing,P= 0.24) and the environment (P= 0.37). At slaughter,Campylobacterwas isolated from all of the stages, including postchill. The highest frequencies of resistance were exhibited against tetracycline (ABF, 48.2%; conventional, 88.3%). Ciprofloxacin-resistantC. coliisolates were observed in conventionally raised (17.1%) and ABF (1.2%) pigs (P= 0.11). Antimicrobial use data from conventional farms indicated significant associations between oxytetracycline use and tetracycline resistance in the nursery pigs (P= 0.01), between tiamulin exposure and azithromycin and erythromycin resistance in nursery (P< 0.01) and finishing (P< 0.01) pigs, and between enrofloxacin exposure and ciprofloxacin and nalidixic acid resistance in farrowing (P< 0.01) and nursery (P< 0.01) pigs. Identical antimicrobial resistance profiles were observed in the pigs and their environments on farms and at slaughter. In summary, our results highlight the persistence and dissemination of ARCampylobacterfrom farm to slaughter in ABF and conventionally raised pigs and their environments.

Abstract (sommario):
In the production of apple juice, the by-products such as the peel, bark and seeds remain biologically active substances and a good source of dietary fibre. The aim of our study is to incorporate apple by-product flour (ABF) into cereal crispbreads and to determine the total dietary fibre (TDF) content, the colour and the structural changes after addition of ABF to cereal based extrudates. Hot air drying was applied for the preparation of ABF from apple pomace. For the development of new products, a laboratory single-screw extruder GÖTTFERT 1 L series (Germany) was used. An extrusion screw (compression ratio 2:1) at a speed of 60-80 rpm and a rectangular die (aperture: 20 mm wide, 1.0 mm high, 100 mm long) were also used. The basic ingredients for extruded crispbreads were wheat flour, rice flour, wheat bran, rye flour, oat flour with addition of ABF in different proportions (5%, 10%, 15%).The content of total dietary fibre (TDF) was determined according to the AOAC –AACC method No.985.29 by FOSS Analytical Fibertec E 1023 system. Density, textural properties and colour was also determined. The obtained results showed an increase of TDF from 9.39 to 15.89 g 100g-1 in wheat crispbreads with AB and from 15.8 to19.89 g 100g-1 in rye crispbreads with ABF, hardness of products with ABF was from 17.2-21.7 N and density from 0.24-0.35g cm-3, moisture of final product was 3.89-4.24±0. 01%. The main purpose of the current research was to determine the effect of ABF addition to cereal crispbread content, of the TDF and the textural properties.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract There are 2 potentially alternative package solutions proposed to replace Flip-Chip Ball Grid Array (FCBGA) with Ajinomoto build-up film (ABF) substrate. First one is ABF-free solution, Flip-Chip Scale Packages (FCCSP) with laminate-based prepreg material. FCCSP is a mature package solution, and there are various prepreg materials which can be selected to match the original ABF characterization. The focused FCBGA size for FCCSP is from 10 mm x 10 mm to 21 mm x 21 mm, and substrate layer count from 1+2+1L to 2+2+2L. The applications cover memory controllers, Wi-Fi processors, and DTV SoCs. The other package solution is Fan-out Ball Grid Array (FOBGA) which is targeting larger FCBGA with high ABF layer count. The focused maximum package size and layer count of FCBGA are 55 mm x 55 mm and 6+2+6L individually. The potential applications are CPUs, AI accelerators, and networking switches which require extremely high electrical performance. The design concept of FOBGA is to redistribute signal bump locations on FO die, and make an ABF substrate layer accommodate more I/O signals to further reduce the layer count of the ABF substrate. The package signal integrity (SI) and power integrity (PI) analyses are performed to validate the electrical performance of proposed package solutions. Finally, we come out with design guidelines of FOBGA to mitigate the performance degradation due to substrate layer reduction.

Abstract (sommario):
In this study, a new type of anaerobic biological filter (ABF) packed with alkali-treated loofah filler and a filler-free suspension growth control group (SBR) were used to cultivate the inoculated activated sludge to improve the activity and low temperature tolerance of the enriched anaerobic ammonia oxidation bacteria in the reactor. The results show that ABF and SBR were acclimated and started quickly, and the total nitrogen removal rate was maintained at 70.9% and 63.7%, respectively. Under the low temperature operating conditions, the total nitrogen removal rate of ABF maintained 59.9%, which was 16.5% higher than that of SBR. The detected EPS in the biomass of ABF and SBR increased by 100% and 272%, respectively, under low temperatures (15°C). Metagenomic testing revealed that the anammox bacteria (Candidatus Brocadiae) were the dominant functional populations both in ABF and SBR systems, and their relative abundances were 22.5% and 11.38%, respectively. In addition, it is found for the first time that anammox bacteria and denitrifying bacteria were the main contributors to EPS synthesis, which is important to the stable operation of the reactor at low temperature.

Abstract (sommario):
Obesity is caused by excessive fat cells and the overgrowth of adipocytes and is a major risk factor for several chronic illnesses. Aronia melanocarpa fruit is rich in anthocyanins and polyphenols and has protective effects against various diseases. In this study, we examined the effect of Aronia extract (Aronia bioactive fraction, ABF®) on the biomarkers of the adipogenic pathway during adipocyte differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells. Lipid accumulation was verified by Oil Red O staining. mRNA and protein expression of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBPα), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), fatty acid-binding protein 2 (FABP2), and fatty acid synthase (FAS) were assayed by RT-qPCR and Western blot analyses. Adiponectin and leptin secretion were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. ABF® treatment downregulated lipid accumulation based on Oil Red O staining. ABF®-treated cells exhibited decreased mRNA and protein expression of LPL, C/EBPα, PPARγ, FABP2, and FAS. Moreover, ABF® treatment significantly increased adiponectin secretion and decreased leptin secretion. In conclusion, ABF® has anti-adipogenic effects on the differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells and may be used as an anti-obesity nutraceutical.

Abstract (sommario):
The implementation of activity-based funding (ABF) in mental health from 1 July 2013 has significant risks and benefits. It is critical that the process of implementation is consistent with Australia’s cherished goal of establishing a genuine and effective model of community-based mental health care. The infrastructure to support the application of ABF to mental health is currently weak and requires considerable development. States and territories are struggling to meet existing demand for largely hospital-based acute mental health care. There is a risk that valuable ABF-driven Commonwealth growth funds may be used to prop up these systems rather than drive the emergence of new models of community-based care. Some of these new models exist now and this article provides a short description. The aim is to help the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority better understand the landscape of mental health into which it now seeks to deploy ABF.

Abstract (sommario):
Injury of the afferent limb of the baroreflex from neck radiation causes radiation-induced afferent baroreflex failure (R-ABF). Identification and management of R-ABF is challenging. We aimed to investigate the pattern of autonomic dysfunction on standardized autonomic testing in patients with probable R-ABF. We retrospectively analyzed all autonomic reflex screens performed at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, between 2000 and 2020 in patients with probable R-ABF. Additional tests reviewed included ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, plasma norepinephrine, and thermoregulatory sweat test. We identified 90 patients with probable R-ABF. Median total composite autonomic severity score (range, 0–10) was 7 (interquartile range, 6–7). Cardiovascular adrenergic impairment was seen in 85 patients (94.4%), increased blood pressure recovery time after Valsalva maneuver in 71 patients (78.9%; median 17.4 seconds), and orthostatic hypotension in 68 patients (75.6%). Cardiovagal impairment was demonstrated by abnormal heart rate responses to deep breathing (79.5%), Valsalva ratio (87.2%), and vagal baroreflex sensitivity (57.9%). Plasma norepinephrine was elevated and rose appropriately upon standing (722–1207 pg/mL). Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring revealed hypertension, postural hypotension, hypertensive surges, tachycardia, and absence of nocturnal dipping. Blood pressure lability correlated with impaired vagal baroreflex function. Postganglionic sympathetic sudomotor function was normal in most cases; the most frequent thermoregulatory sweat test finding was focal neck anhidrosis (78.9%). Standardized autonomic testing in R-ABF demonstrates cardiovascular adrenergic impairment with orthostatic hypotension, blood pressure lability, and elevated plasma norepinephrine. Cardiovagal impairment is common, while sudomotor deficits are limited to direct radiation effects.

We found significantly higher prevalence of C. coli on the ABF farms (77.3%) than on the conventional farms (27.6%) among pigs at the nursery stage (P < 0.001). At slaughter, we found significantly higher prevalence at the postevisceration than at the preevisceration stage (P < 0.001) in both production systems. The 1,459 C. coli isolates were tested with the agar dilution method for their susceptibility to six antimicrobials: chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, gentamicin, nalidixic acid, and tetracycline. Resistance was most prevalent against tetracycline (66.2% of isolates) followed by erythromycin (53.6% of isolates). Frequency of resistance to these two antimicrobials was significantly higher among conventional herds (83.4% for tetracycline and 77% for erythromycin) than among ABF herds (56.2% for tetracycline and 34.5% for erythromycin). Resistance to ciprofloxacin at the MIC (>4 mg/liter) was also found on farms in both systems. Multidrug-resistant C. coli strains were detected in both the conventional (7%) and ABF (4%) herds. This is the first report of ciprofloxacin-resistant strains of C. coli in ABF pigs in the United States. These findings highlight the high prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant C. coli in both conventional and ABF pig production systems and have significant implications for the persistence of antimicrobial-resistant Campylobacter in the pig production environment regardless of levels of antimicrobial use.

Abstract (sommario):
A GH (glycoside hydrolase) family 54 α-L-arabinofuranosidase from Trichoderma koningii G-39 (termed Abf) was successfully expressed in Pichia pastoris and purified to near homogeneity by cation-exchange chromatography. To determine the amino acid residues essential for the catalytic activity of Abf, extensive mutagenesis of 24 conserved glutamate and aspartate residues was performed. Among the mutants, D221N, E223Q and D299N were found to decrease catalytic activity significantly. The kcat values of the D221N and D299N mutants were 7000- and 1300-fold lower respectively, than that of the wild-type Abf. E223Q was nearly inactive. These results are consistent with observations obtained from the Aspergillus kawachii α-L-arabinofuranosidase three-dimensional structure. This structure indicates that Asp221 of T. koningii Abf is significant for substrate binding and that Glu223 as well as Asp299 function as a nucleophile and a general acid/base catalyst for the enzymatic reaction respectively. The catalytic mechanism of wild-type Abf was further investigated by NMR spectroscopy and kinetic analysis. The results showed that Abf is a retaining enzyme. It catalyses the hydrolysis of various substrates via the formation of a common intermediate that is probably an arabinosyl–enzyme intermediate. A two-step, double-displacement mechanism involving first the formation, and then the breakdown, of an arabinosyl–enzyme intermediate was proposed. Based on the kcat values of a series of aryl-α-L-arabinofuranosides catalytically hydrolysed by wild-type Abf, a relatively small Brønsted constant, βlg=−0.18, was obtained, suggesting that the rate-limiting step of the enzymatic reaction is the dearabinosylation step. Further kinetic studies with the D299G mutant revealed that the catalytic activity of this mutant depended largely on the pKa values (>6) of leaving phenols, with βlg=−1.3, indicating that the rate-limiting step of the reaction becomes the arabinosylation step. This kinetic outcome supports the idea that Asp299 is the general acid/base residue. The pH activity profile of D299N provided further evidence strengthening this suggestion.

Abstract (sommario):
1′,4′-trans-diol-ABA is a key precursor of the biosynthesis of abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis in fungi. We successfully obtained the pure compound from a mutant of Botrytis cinerea and explored its function and possible mechanism on plants by spraying 2 mg/L 1′,4′-trans-diol-ABA on tobacco leaves. Our results showed that this compound enhanced the drought tolerance of tobacco seedlings. A comparative transcriptome analysis showed that a large number of genes responded to the compound, exhibiting 1523 genes that were differentially expressed at 12 h, which increased to 1993 at 24 h and 3074 at 48 h, respectively. The enrichment analysis demonstrated that the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were primarily enriched in pathways related to hormones and resistance. The DEGs of transcription factors were generally up-regulated and included the bHLH, bZIP, ERF, MYB, NAC, WRKY and HSF families. Moreover, the levels of expression of PYL/PYR, PP2C, SnRK2, and ABF at the ABA signaling pathway responded positively to exogenous 1′,4′-trans-diol-ABA. Among them, seven ABF transcripts that were detected were significantly up-regulated. In addition, the genes involved in salicylic acid, ethylene and jasmonic acid pathways, reactive oxygen species scavenging system, and other resistance related genes were primarily induced by 1′,4′-trans-diol-ABA. These findings indicated that treatment with 1′,4′-trans-diol-ABA could improve tolerance to plant abiotic stress and potential biotic resistance by regulating gene expression, similar to the effects of exogenous ABA.

Abstract (sommario):
Short-term (3 h) treatment of embryos isolated from dormant apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) seeds with NO donors stimulates their transition from dormancy to germination. Seed dormancy is maintained by ABA, while germination is controlled mainly by gibberellins (GAs) and jasmonic acid (JA). NO-induced dormancy removal correlates with low ABA concentration in embryonic axes and reduced embryo sensitivity to ABA. We analyzed the expression of genes encoding key enzymes of ABA degradation (CYP707A1, CYP707A2), biosynthesis (NCED3, NCED9), and elements of the ABA transduction pathway (PYL1, PYL2, RCAR1, RCAR3, PP2CA, ABI1, ABI2, SNRK2, ABI5, AREB3, ABF). A role for JA in the regulation of germination led us to investigate the expression of genes encoding enzymes of JA biosynthesis (AOS1, JMT, JAR1) and the transduction pathway (COI1, MYC2, JAZ3, JAZ12). The expression profiles of the genes were estimated in embryonic axes isolated from dormant or NO fumigated apple embryos. The analyzed genes were differentially regulated during dormancy alleviation, the main modifications in the transcription level were detected for NCED3, NCED9, CYP707A2, RCAR1, ABF, AOS1, JMT, JAR1 and JAZ3. A regulatory role of NO in the removal of seed dormancy is associated with the stimulation of expression of genes related to ABA degradation, down-regulation of genes responsible for ABA synthesis, an increase of expression level of genes engaged in JA synthesis and modification of the expression of genes engaged in signaling pathways of the hormones. To confirm a signaling role of NO during dormancy breakage, an increased RNA nitration level in embryonic axes was demonstrated.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the expected outcomes, both of positive and negative returns occurred by shariá credit instruments in global Islamic banks. The annual panel data from 2005 to 2012 is collected from 40 Islamic banks from 12 countries and value at risk (VaR) technique is employed in the investigation process. The findings of this study indicate several outcomes: first, majority of Islamic banks use debt-based financing (DBF) and avoid asset-based financing (ABF) due to the lack of secured rate of fixed returns and collateral. Second, the ABF financing shows the positive returns. Third, interestingly, DBF financing faces higher credit risk compared to ABF even DBF secures its financing through tight policy implementation. Finally, this paper comes up with policy recommendations for the further reduction of credit risks and improvement of bankers’ confidence level in implementing the ABF financing policy. Design/methodology/approach – VaR on panel data. Findings – Shariá credit instruments play an important role. Research limitations/implications – Data findings. Originality/value – Fully original.

Abstract (sommario):
Polyethyleneimine (PEI)-immobilization of bamboo viscose fibers using carbamate linkages (ABF-PEI) was investigated in order to improve the dyeing properties of the fiber. Results from morphological observation, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis clearly showed the successful carbamate binding of PEI at hydroxyl groups of cellulose fiber. The adsorption studies revealed that fast and efficient adsorption was achieved for ABF-PEI. Under optimum dyeing conditions, the amount of dye adsorbed on ABF-PEI at equilibrium (>100 mg/g) was much higher than that of the unmodified fiber (<10 mg/g). The adsorption behavior of lac dyeing on the PEI-modified bamboo viscose fibers could be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm. The proposed mechanism mainly involved the electrostatic ion–dipole interaction between protonated amines of PEI and negative charged sites of lac dye. The color fastness results indicated good resistance of color changes for ABF-PEI, suggesting efficiency of the surface modifying method of PEI-immobilization on bamboo viscose fibers.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Infection with tissue-migrating helminths is frequently associated with intense granulocyte infiltrations. Several host-derived factors are known to mediate granulocyte recruitment to the tissues, but less attention has been paid to how parasite-derived products trigger this process. Parasite-derived chemotactic factors which selectively recruit granulocytes have been described, but nothing is known about which cellular receptors respond to these agents. The effect of products from the nematodes Ascaris suum, Toxocara canis, andAnisakis simplex on human neutrophils were studied. We monitored four parameters of activation: chemotaxis, cell polarization, intracellular Ca2+ transients, and priming of superoxide anion production. Body fluids of A. suum (ABF) and T. canis (TcBF) induced strong directional migration, shape change, and intracellular Ca2+ transients. ABF also primed neutrophils for production of superoxide anions. Calcium mobilization in response to A. suum-derived products was completely abrogated by pretreatment with pertussis toxin, implicating a classical G protein-coupled receptor mechanism in the response to ABF. Moreover, pretreatment with interleukin-8 (IL-8) completely abrogated the response to ABF, demonstrating desensitization of a common pathway. However, ABF was unable to fully desensitize the response to IL-8, and binding to CXCR1 or CXCR2 was excluded in experiments using RBL-2H3 cells transfected with the two human IL-8 receptors. Our results provide the first evidence for a direct interaction between a parasite-derived chemotactic factor and the host's chemotactic network, via a novel G protein-coupled receptor which interacts with the IL-8 receptor pathway.

Abstract (sommario):
Water absorption and thermomechanical behavior of composites based on thermoplastic starch (TPS) are presented in this work, wherein the concentration of agave bagasse fibers (ABF, 0–15 wt%) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA, 0–30 wt%) is varied. Glycerol (G) is used as starch (S) plasticizer to form TPS. Starch stands as the polymer matrix (70/30 wt/wt, S/G). The results show that TPS hygroscopicity decreases as PLA and fiber content increase. Storage, stress-strain, and flexural moduli increase with PLA and/or agave bagasse fibers (ABF) content while impact resistance decreases. The TPS glass transition temperature increases with ABF content and decreases with PLA content. Micrographs of the studied biocomposites show a stratified brittle surface with a rigid fiber fracture.

Abstract (sommario):
In times of market reforms and international migration, the Swedish welfare model has been seriously challenged. In the context of the arrival of refugees in 2015–2017, the state turned to civil society in facing up to the challenges. In this article, we direct our attention to the Workers’ Educational Association’s (ABF) state-funded work with refugees, with a specific focus on the activities conducted, the resources making them possible and the use-value of the resources mobilised. The article is based on observations and interviews with study circle leaders, managers and asylum seekers. The analysis illustrates that ABF, in line with its historical legacy, the broader workers’ movement, the strong notion of popular education as ‘free and voluntary’, has, with its well-established connections throughout the country, not solely taken on the task defined by the state. In solidarity, ABF has also responded to the needs of the refugees. As highlighted in the analysis, ABF has mobilized a wide range of resources, not least providing refugees with social networks and help in contacting the authorities. With such mobilization, opportunities were provided for the inclusion of refugees in Sweden.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to introduce and validate a new algorithm to estimate instantaneous aortic blood flow (ABF) by mathematical analysis of arterial blood pressure (ABP) waveforms. The algorithm is based on an autoregressive with exogenous input (ARX) model. We applied this algorithm to diastolic ABP waveforms to estimate the autoregressive model coefficients by requiring the estimated diastolic flow to be zero. The algorithm incorporating the coefficients was then applied to the entire ABP signal to estimate ABF. The algorithm was applied to six Yorkshire swine data sets over a wide range of physiological conditions for validation. Quantitative measures of waveform shape (standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis), as well as stroke volume and cardiac output from the estimated ABF, were computed. Values of these measures were compared with those obtained from ABF waveforms recorded using a Transonic aortic flow probe placed around the aortic root. The estimation errors were compared with those obtained using a windkessel model. The ARX model algorithm achieved significantly lower errors in the waveform measures, stroke volume, and cardiac output than those obtained using the windkessel model ( P < 0.05).

Abstract (sommario):
Activity-based financing (ABF) and global budgeting are two common reimbursement models in hospital care that embody different incentives for cost containment and quality. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe perceptions from the provider perspective about how and why replacing variable ABF by global budgets affects daily operations and provided services. The study setting is a large Swedish county council that went from traditional budgeting to an ABF system and then back again in the period 2005-2012. Based on semistructured interviews with midlevel managers and analysis of administrative data, we conclude that the transition back from ABF to budgeting has had limited consequences and suggest 4 reasons why: (1) Midlevel managers dampen effects of changes in the external control; (2) the actual design of the different reimbursement models differed from the textbook design; (3) the purchasing body’s use of other management controls did not change; (4) incentives bypassing the purchasing body’s controls dampened the consequences. The study highlights the challenges associated with improvement strategies that rely exclusively on budget system changes within traditional tax-funded and politically managed health care systems.
