Abstract (sommario):
Passengers are more susceptible to experiencing motion sickness (MS) than drivers. The difference in the severity of MS is due to their different head movement behavior during curve driving. When negotiating a curve, the passengers tilt their heads towards the lateral acceleration direction while the drivers tilt their heads against it. Thus, to reduce the passengers’ level of MS, they need to reduce their head’s tilting angle towards the lateral acceleration direction. Designing MS minimization strategies is easier if the correlation between the head movement and lateral acceleration is known mathematically. Therefore, this paper proposes the utilization of a time delay neural network (TDNN) to model the correlation of the occupant’s head movement and lateral acceleration. An experiment was conducted to gather real-time data for the modeling process. The results show that TDNN manages to model the correlation by producing a similar output response to the actual response. Thus, it is expected that the correlation model could be used as an occupant’s head movement predictor tool in future studies of MS.

Abstract (sommario):
The possibility of avascular changes of the metatarsal heads following forefoot surgery has been previously documented. The aim of this study was to investigate the arterial supply of the lesser metatarsal heads with regard to osteotomies of these bones. We used epoxy resin injections and a modified Spalteholz technique in human cadaveric specimens to demonstrate the intraosseous and extraosseous blood supply of the lesser metatarsals. The metatarsal heads had two arterial sources: The dorsal metatarsal arteries, which arose from the dorsalis pedis artery, and The plantar metatarsal arteries, which are branches of the posterior tibial artery. These two vessels typically anastomosed at two sites about the metatarsal heads, forming a vascular ring and provided an extensive extraosseous arterial network around the metatarsal heads. Small arterial branches of this network run distally on the metatarsal cortex to enter the bone of the metatarsal head. The nutrient arteries traversed the cortex of the metaphysis close to the capsular and ligamentous insertions to provide multiple branches for the supply of the subchondral bone. Extensive capsular stripping during metatarsal head osteotomies results in damage to the medial and lateral head vessels.

Abstract (sommario):
BACKGROUND Supernumerary heads of the biceps brachii are a common anatomical variation, with an incidence of 3.7 % to 20.5 % in various studies carried out around the world. They can occur in various forms, and produce a range of clinical symptoms, such as impingement syndromes at the shoulder joint, and nerve-compression syndromes in the arm. An awareness of these variations is helpful when assessing patients with pain symptoms in the region of the shoulder and arm. The purpose of this study was to examine the morphology, nerve supply, and variations in morphology, of the biceps brachii in a population in Eastern India. METHODS This observational study was carried out on 20 (17 males, 3 females) formalinembalmed cadavers during routine gross anatomy dissection of the upper limb, using standard dissection methods. We examined the morphology, nerve supply, and variations in morphology, of the biceps brachii in a population in Eastern India. RESULTS Three upper limbs (7.5 % out of 40 limbs) showed supernumerary heads. In one male, a third humeral head of origin, from the anteromedial surface of the shaft of the humerus was observed in the left upper limb. In another male cadaver, we found a unique case with bilateral third heads with an aponeurotic origin from the capsule of the shoulder joint, with the third head comparable in size and bulk to the long and short heads. The remaining upper limbs showed the usual morphology, with the long head originating intracapsularly from the supraglenoid tubercle of the humerus and the glenoid labrum, and the short head from the tip of the coracoid process of the scapula. Insertions were usual. CONCLUSIONS Our study found an incidence of 7.5 % in a population sample from Eastern India, North Bengal. Supernumerary heads can occur in various forms, and can result in varied clinical symptoms. Abstract (sommario):
Background: Biceps brachii derives its name from its two proximally attached parts or ‘heads’ that is known as long head and short head. Two tendons form elongated bellies that though closely applied get fused within 7cm or so above the elbow joint. These variations should be kept in mind during surgical and diagnostic procedures done by clinicians. Methods: A total of 18 cadavers were dissected for two successive years during undergraduate and were observed for different patterns of fusion of two heads of biceps brachii. Results: The present study showed that frequency of fusion of heads of biceps brachii in its upper one-third part was observed less commonly while it was frequently observed in its middle one-third part. Conclusions: Variation in union of heads might be significant in causing compression of neurovascular structures because of their close relationship to the brachial artery and median nerve.

Abstract (sommario):
Activity areas of the head of the educational institution include school administration and management, purposeful use of human and material resources to ensure the quality of education. The school context influences the heads’ working day and their time distribution; therefore, it is relevant to conduct research to evaluate the contextual factors determining the opportunities and limitations of heads’ working time planning. The aim of the research is to investigate the distribution of working time of pre-school institutions’ heads for performance of different functions and to reveal the opportunities and limitations of working time planning. The study was conducted in 2018-2019. During the first stage of the study, one head of the pre-school institution from each of three European countries (Lithuania, France, Italy) was surveyed. The results of the survey have shown certain similarities in heads’ activities due to the specificity of the head’s work, starting with the formation of strategic aims, parents’ and social partners’ involvement in the institution’s activities and finishing with the assessment of the quality of the institution’s activity. Given that heads of different countries work in quite different contexts and under different working conditions, it is not appropriate to draw summarising conclusions, but the obtained data can be used in developing the methodology of analogous research. During the second stage, the topics of planning the working time of the heads of pre-school educational institutions were analysed. The heads of Siauliai pre-school educational institutions, involved in the study, have revealed that they spend most of their time working with the documents of the institution, solving personnel and financial issues. In other words, the activity prevailing in the work of the heads of Lithuanian pre-school institutions is administrative-bureaucratic processes, while the heads themselves are inclined to use part of that time for supervision and improvement of the educational process and for their own professional development. Although one of the head’s functions is proper and timely planning of activities, and thus, of their own working time, in practice obstacles to time planning, related to management of human and material resources and multi-tasking, when several activities differing in content and scope are performed simultaneously, are encountered. Keywords: working time planning, pre-school educational institution, head of the pre-school educational institution, distributed leadership.

Abstract (sommario):
Researchers choose to research in Kabupaten Bojonegoro, because there were cases of misappropriation of village funds by the village head and there were cases of villages budget reporting to the head of local government. This study aims to look at the factors that can improve the performance of village heads in village finances. There are three independent variables tested, namely managerial ability, level of education, and the role of the Village Consultative Body (BPD), while the dependent variable in this study is the performance of village financial management. This study took a setting in Kabupaten Bojonegoro by taking a sample of village heads in 6 (six) sub-districts that received the largest village funds. The type of data used in this study is primary data collected through distributing questionnaires to respondents. The distribution of the questionnaire was carried out by meet the village head directly at the village head’s office, attend the village head forum, and send the questionnaire link via Whatsapp media. They are 150 samples collected through the purposive sampling technique. The data analysis technique used multiple linear regression with the SPSS 23 application program. The test results showed that the managerial ability and the role of the BPD had a significant effect on the village head's performance, while the level of education did not affect the performance of the village head. Abstract (sommario):
The effect of 5-azacytidine (5-azaCR) on head regeneration and budding in hydra are reported. Hydra attenuata were exposed to various doses of 5-azaCR for 48 h and then decapitated and cultured. Head regeneration and bud formation were observed for 12 days after decapitation. Untreated control hydra regenerated heads within 7 to 8 days of decapitation with a budding index of 0·2. Buds invariably arose in the normal budding zone (below the gastric region). In the group treated with 0·8mM-5-azaCR, 9 days after decapitation head regeneration was seen in only 13% of animals, and an average of two buds per hydra were formed, most of which were in the vicinity of the distal end. Induction of budding was also seen in the animals that regenerated heads. In animals exposed to 1 mM-5-azaCR three main types of responses were observed 9 days after decapitation. (1) 44% of the animals regenerated normal heads; about half of them developed at least one bud and these buds originated in the budding zone. (2) 17·5% of the animals developed abnormal, long hypostome-like structures with single or bifurcated tentacles at theirtips. There were at least two buds per animal and they were invariably at abnormal sites. (3) 32% of the animals failed to regenerate heads, although they developed two buds. 87% ofthese buds originated in abnormal sites of the body column and a large number (72%) did not detach even by the 12th day after decapitation. Both 5 and 10 mM of 5-azaCR were toxic to the animals; the survivors formed large globeshaped heads. Bud induction was seen in 60% and 28% of animals in the 5 and 10 mM groups, respectively. These observations demonstrate that 5-azaCR induces bud formation in hydra at doses that inhibit head regeneration. This bud induction might be due to a specific expression of gene products responsible for bud formation.

Abstract (sommario):
Several retrieval studies have reported on metallic depositions on ceramic femoral heads, but the effect on the wear behavior of artificial hip joints has not been investigated in wear simulator studies. In the present study, retrieved ceramic heads with metallic depositions as third particles were tested against cross-linked ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) liners in a hip wear simulator. The amount of liner wear and expansion of metallic depositions on the heads were determined before and after wear testing with digital microscopy. The surface roughness of the heads was investigated in areas with and without metallic depositions by laser scanning microscopy. After five million load cycles, a non-significant reduction in the metallic formation on the retrieved heads was found. The metallic areas showed a higher surface roughness compared to unconcerned areas. The liners showed a higher wear rate of 1.57 ± 1.36 mg/million cycles for 28 mm heads and 2.42 ± 0.82 mg/million cycles for 36 mm heads with metallic depositions, in comparison with new ceramic heads with a 28 mm size ((−0.06 ± 0.89) mg/million cycles) and 36 mm size ((2.04 ± 0.46) mg/million cycles). Metallic transfer on ceramic heads can lead to an increased surface roughness and higher wear rates at the UHMWPE liners. Therefore, metallic contact of the ceramic femoral head should be avoided.

Abstract (sommario):
Nowadays, researches concerned magnetic abrasive finishing (MAF) are becoming increasingly popular. Polishing head is one of the most important factors in the whole polishing system in which magnetic abrasive act directly on the workpiece. In this paper, two kinds of polishing heads applied in the polishing of free form surface are proposed. They are hard polishing head and soft polishing head, respectively. And some important factors are contrasted such as selfsharpening capacity, morphology distribution, and removal uniformity. Moreover, the finishing force is the key factor which is different between the two polishing heads having a great influence on polishing effect. Through comparison and analysis, the soft polishing head is better to finish free form surface. And the experimental results reflect its superiority in polishing free form surface.

Abstract (sommario):
The human face is interesting and challenging mainly because of its familiarity. Essentially, it is the part of the human body that is used to recognize individuals. As well as the face, the speech is an important instrument for human communication, allowing the exteriorization of thoughts and the definition of emotions. Together, speech and face are the main elements of interactivity among human beings. However, the natural and faithful reproductions of the pecularities of these elements in the computational universe is not a simple task, constituting topics of the research in the diverse areas, particularly in facial animation. Among the diverse types of facial animation systems developed, those that involve the facial animation of the virtual character combined with speech synchronization are distinguished as directly related to this work. These kinds of systems are known as talking head or talking face. Fot the development of a talking head system, it is necessary to identify the possible approaches for the speech and face modeling. The models used will influence not only the way that the animation is performed, but it will also affect the system´s interactivity. An important contribution of the present master thesis is the study of several possible approaches for the main elements and the proposal of taxonomy for the classification of the talking head systems. From the proposed taxonomy and making use of one approach for each analyzed paramenter, an application was developed that receives as input a text composed by the character´s speech and genus, language and emotion parameters, and it generates as output, in real time, the animation of a virtual character uttering the input text with speech synchronization and expressiveness. The system developed, called Expressive Talking Heads, explores the naturalness of facial animation and it seeks to offer the user a real- time interactivity interface. The Expressive Talking Heads system can run as a stand-alone applicattion or connected to web browsers. It was designed and developed to provide a platform and operating system independent solution.

Abstract (sommario):
Axe-heads made of a distinctive raw material are found at Mississippian sites across southern Illinois and the Ohio-Mississippi confluence region, yet little research has been done to determine their geological provenance. In this thesis, I use geochemical methods to analyze ground stone tools and debitage from across the Confluence Region in order to prove their origins in the St. Francois Mountains of Missouri. I also compare patterns of axe-head production, consumption, and deposition to Charles Cobb's (2000) model of Mill Creek chert hoes, so as to gain a greater understanding of the political economy of these objects.

Al, Dossry Theeb Mohammed. "Consumer culture in Saudi Arabia : a qualitative study among heads of household". Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/4205.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
As Saudi Arabia turns towards modernisation, it faces many tensions and conflicts during that process. Consumerism is an extremely controversial subject in Saudi society. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes that the opportunities and constraints of consumerism have brought about in the specific socio-economic and cultural settings between local traditions, religion, familial networks and institutions, on the one hand, and the global flow of money, goods, services and information, on the other. A qualitative method was applied. Focusing on Saudi consumer behaviour, the study was explorative; open-ended qualitative interviews and observations were considered to be appropriate methods. The questions covered not only practices of consumption, such as shopping, tourism, leisure time and managing the budget, etc., but also attitudes to consumption in general as well as more general views on social change. In this study the interviews were used and relied upon as the basic method for collecting data. In addition, observation was used to support and supplement the interview data. The research subjects of this study are 29 (male) heads of households/families residing in the three cities of Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam. The focus on fathers/husbands is, of course, immediately recognisable as a limitation of this research. The results of the study were that the cultural pattern of the Saudi family depends heavily on the Islamic religion, a religious reference that distinguishes it from other cultures, such as volunteer work or a desire to give to charity. The existences of other factors that contribute to the formation of consumer behaviour of the Saudi family were discovered, including the social background as well as social pressure to apply such behaviour. The results revealed women have also come to play a major role in influencing the purchasing and selection of both the quantity and quality of goods. The principal conclusion was that despite the obvious manifestations of consumer culture for Saudi families (luxury cars, modern technology, and Western fashion), Saudi society is still loyal to the Islamic religion as a fundamental doctrine. The acceptance of, and trends in, Western-consumer Saudi families do not necessarily mean that there is a Western-driven consumer base depending on the individual. Although Saudi families also enjoy acquiring Western goods and impressive fashions, these may conflict with Islamic and traditional values in general.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Strategic agility enables an organisation to sense and seize opportunities, manage uncertainty and adapt to changes. This paper presents one case study of a traditional charitable organisation taking a strategy-focused approach to agile transformation. Interview data was collected over a 13-month period through interviews at different stages and with different members of the transformation team and Heads of Department. This case study illustrates the challenges faced in such a transformation, and shows that strategic agility requires different time horizons to co-exist: a future vision, a medium term set of objectives and a short term performance monitoring perspective.

Abstract (sommario):
Postoperative dislocation of total hip replacements has been documented to occur at a rate of approximately 2.4–3.9% [1–3]. Such events may result in the transfer of titanium from the acetabular cup to the femoral head, both during the dislocation and surgical reduction of the dislocated joint [3,4]. If the head is reduced with this transfer present, the joint life expectancy, which depends on articulating surfaces remaining smooth, is reduced [4]. Although the presence of metal transfer on retrieved femoral heads after dislocation is documented, no previous studies have attempted to quantify the forces or contact stresses at which metal transfer occurs.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract To study the nanoscale heat transfer and laser-related protrusions in heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), we performed static touchdown experiments between HAMR waveguide heads and non-rotating media such as a silicon wafer and a recording disk with an AlMg substrate. During the static touchdown, the laser element is energized with DC current and the embedded contact sensor (ECS) is used to monitor the head temperature. The experimental results show that the thermal fly-height control (TFC) touchdown power decreases with increasing laser current. Meanwhile, the head temperature increases due to the laser heating. From this the ECS resistance rise induced by the laser is extracted. The results show that the silicon wafer dissipates heat effectively under the laser exposure, while the AlMg-substrate disk undergoes a higher temperature rise, which in turn heats the head.

Abstract (sommario):
Clause UG - 39 of ASME Section VIII Division 1 [1] provide rules for compensation of openings in flat stayed/ flat unstayed heads having fitted nozzles. The rules provided in Clause UG - 39 and its sub clauses apply to all openings other than small openings covered by UG - 36 (c)(3)(a) and provide rules for compensation of openings to those geometries which confirms to the geometric limitations specified therein. The rules provided in Clause UG - 39 of ASME Section VIII Division 1 are based on area replacement method. This method is also elaborated in WRC Bulletin 335 Aug 1988[4]. The conclusion of this bulletin is applicable to ASME Section VIII Div 1, ASME Section I, ASME B 31.1 and ASME Section III Class 2 and 3. This method requires that the metal cut out by an opening be replaced by reinforcement within a prescribed zone around the opening. This methodology is relatively simple and vast majority of the piping and pressure vessels with openings conforming to this methodology have given satisfactory service. In Code [1], as such there appears to be no restriction on the location of the nozzle opening, i.e., a header flat head pierced concentrically or eccentrically to locate the nozzle opening as long as the required area is obtained and the stresses are within allowable limits. While both these alternatives would be acceptable in Code [1] constructions, the actual stresses at the header flat heads/nozzle junction may vary considerably. The work reported in this paper was undertaken to make a comparative study on the effect of unstayed flat head pierced concentrically or eccentrically by using ASME Section VIII Division 1 and to study the stress pattern in both the cases using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) as a referral methodology.

Abstract (sommario):
A general formula for plastic collapse load of elliptical heads under internal pressure is useful in plastic collapse design and integrity assessment of pressure vessels. Plastic collapse load of steel elliptical heads with different shapes and thickness was computed by finite element analysis using elastic-perfectly plastic constitutive model, and a formula with maximum relative error less than 6% was derived from the numerical results. The formula is a function of the yield strength of materials, the ratio of major axis Di to minor axis 2hi and that of outer diameter Do to inner diameter Di, and is applicable to steel elliptical heads with Di/2hi within 1–2.6 and Do/Di within 1.001–1.300.

Abstract (sommario):
Accurate dust-source characterizations are critical for effectively modeling dust storms. A previous study developed an approach to manually map dust plume-head point sources in a geographic information system (GIS) framework using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery processed through dust-enhancement algorithms. With this technique, the location of a dust source is digitized and recorded if an analyst observes an unobscured plume head in the imagery. Because airborne dust must be sufficiently elevated for overland dust-enhancement algorithms to work, this technique may include up to 10 km in digitized dust-source location error due to downwind advection. However, the potential for error in this method due to analyst subjectivity has never been formally quantified. In this study, we evaluate a version of the methodology adapted to better enable reproducibility assessments amongst multiple analysts to determine the role of analyst subjectivity on recorded dust source location error. Four analysts individually mapped dust plumes in Southwest Asia and Northwest Africa using five years of MODIS imagery collected from 15 May to 31 August. A plume-source location is considered reproducible if the maximum distance between the analyst point-source markers for a single plume is ≤10 km. Results suggest analyst marker placement is reproducible; however, additional analyst subjectivity-induced error (7 km determined in this study) should be considered to fully characterize locational uncertainty. Additionally, most of the identified plume heads (> 90%) were not marked by all participating analysts, which indicates dust source maps generated using this technique may differ substantially between users.
