Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Consumer (‘prosumer’) concerns over animal welfare and the environmental footprint of pork production dominate the media. Indeed, the discussion of alternatives to pork, both from the continued global growth in chicken consumption and advances in cellular meat production and vegetable protein alternatives, represent real threats to pork’s future. Producers and processors continue to focus genetic improvement, nutrition, and management to improve meat production efficiency. Disease mitigation and animal health limit our ability to reach the pigs genetic potential, either in terms of pigs processed per sow, or breaching the 2:1 lifetime feed conversion. Can farmers continue to gain more pigs per sow, while keeping them healthy and alive? How do we maximize meat yield per carcass without losing flavor and the consumer experience? Are there limits to how low we can go in the conversion of nutrients into feed? Despite increased consumer demands and the continued need to improve production efficiency, the management of pigs has changed little in the last decades, often relying on decades old innovations and enhanced biosecurity. Innovations such as vertical hog farms in China, muti site production, and new feed technologies offer incremental but not disruptive improvements. The 10 digital technologies (PWC) is a useful framework to review the technologies with the potential to transform swine production. These are 3D Printing, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Cloud Computing, Robotics, Drones, Blockchain, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality (‘Metaverse’). Concepts such as precision nutrition, precision management recognize the need for better data, and data underpins advances such as nutrigenomics, microbiota and the environment of the pig. Digital technologies can disrupt pork production while offering the opportunity to respond to consumers, legislators, producer demands and other actors within the pork production chain.

Abstract (sommario):
Polyamide 66 (PA 66) or Nylon 66 is a strong, easily processed polymer with high thermal resistance and excellent mechanical properties. Tungsten carbide (WC/Co-Cr 86/10-4), known for its exceptional hardness and elasticity, is commonly used for coatings in the thermal spraying and coating industry. In this study, we examined the microstructural, mechanical, and thermal properties of composites made from waste micro and nano WC/Co-Cr 86/10-4 powder and a PA66 matrix. PA66 was reinforced with varying ratios of 3, 6, and 10 wt.% WC/Co-Cr 86/10-4. The composite specimens were created by mechanically mixing granular PA66 and micro and nano WC/Co-Cr 86/10-4 powders and molding them under controlled temperature. Mechanical properties were evaluated through ductility and hardness tests, while thermal properties were determined through DSC analysis. The SEM observation revealed the distribution of WC/Co-Cr 86/10-4 within the polymer matrix. The DSC analysis indicated that the composite had a slightly higher melting temperature than pure PA66, and the thermal conductivity also increased slightly. The experimental results demonstrated that the mechanical properties of the composite improved as the WC/Co-Cr 86/10-4 content increased, specifically in terms of tensile strength and hardness. Additionally, the composite exhibited enhanced interfacial adhesion, mechanical behavior, and thermal properties. This composite, utilizing WC/Co-Cr 86/10-4 waste and recycled PA66, allows for the repurposing of industrial waste.

Abstract (sommario):
The financial sector in general is a difficult industry to regulate, as there is a need to balance the competing interests of the various stakeholders. Tampering with the cornerstone of the capitalist system naturally arouses diverging views and is often the subject of many debates as is evidenced by the debates surrounding the National Credit Act ('NCA'). Nonetheless, its regulation can be a weapon to fight against poverty and inequality as evidenced by the purposes of the NCA. The object of this research is to analyse the law on debt review, focusing on the credit provider's right contained in s 86(10) of the NCA to terminate the debt review process.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis deals with the numerical methods for a fully nonlinear degenerate parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs), and for a controlled nonlinear PDEs problem which results from a mass transportation problem. The manuscript is divided into four parts. In a first part of the thesis, we are interested in the necessary and sufficient condition of the monotonicity of finite difference thêta-scheme for a one-dimensional diffusion equations. An explicit formula is given in case of the heat equation, which is weaker than the classical Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition. In a second part, we consider a fully nonlinear degenerate parabolic PDE and propose a splitting scheme for its numerical resolution. The splitting scheme combines a probabilistic scheme and the semi-Lagrangian scheme, and in total, it can be viewed as a Monte-Carlo scheme for PDEs. We provide a convergence result as well as a rate of convergence. In the third part of the thesis, we study an optimal mass transportation problem. The mass is transported by the controlled drift-diffusion dynamics, and the associated cost depends on the trajectories, the drift as well as the diffusion coefficient of the dynamics. We prove a strong duality result for the transportation problem, thus extending the Kantorovich duality to our context. The dual formulation maximizes a value function on the space of all bounded continuous functions, and every value function corresponding to a bounded continuous function is the solution to a stochastic control problem. In the Markovian cases, we prove the dynamic programming principle of the optimal control problems, and we propose a gradient-projection algorithm for the numerical resolution of the dual problem, and provide a convergence result. Finally, in a fourth part, we continue to develop the dual approach of mass transportation problem with its applications in the computation of the model-independent no-arbitrage price bound of the variance option in a vanilla-liquid market. After a first analytic approximation, we propose a gradient-projection algorithm to approximate the bound as well as the corresponding static strategy in vanilla options

Abstract (sommario):
This research project aims at estimating financial risks related to climate change. Beyond the applications and quantitative findings, the main objective of the chapters of this thesis is to provide a structural and methodological framework that is generalizable, in order to facilitate their integration by practitioners. The first chapter proposes a bottom-up measure of transition risk, which can be incorporated with classical risk models (Merton or credit risk model). This cost-based approach is limited to the directly polluting sectors, which leads to the second chapter, which allows for the diffusion of transition risk through the value chain. These approaches offer a static structure that allows for a fixed scenario stress-test but not for pricing the bonds by considering heterogeneous scenarios and the probability of realization. To this end, chapter three proposes a pricing model that integrates a Bayesian approach in updating scenario probabilities based on observed jumps in carbon pricing mechanisms. Finally, the last chapter proposes a Monte-Carlo methodology for simulating annual damages caused by tropical cyclones. The conversion of raw climatic data into a synthetic database of losses is achieved by coupling statistical and thermodynamic relationships. The exposure of physical assets, the dynamics of socio-economic factors, local population densities and specific vulnerabilities in different regions of the world are borrowed from different segments of the literature, and combined to obtain a complete model of the classical triptych necessary for the study of physical hazards: hazard intensity x exposure x vulnerability generalizable and homogeneous across countries. The resulting signal can then be simply included in credit risk models equating annualized damages with additional debt

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractAt Public Service Broadcaster SVT in Sweden, background music and sounds in programs have for many years been one of the most common complaints from the viewers. The most sensitive group are people with hearing disabilities, but many others also find background sounds annoying. To address this problem SVT has added Enhanced Speech, a feature with lower background noise, to a number of TV programs in VOD service SVT Play. As a result, when the number of programs with the Enhanced Speech feature increased, the level of audio complaints to customer service decreased. The Enhanced Speech feature got the rating 8.3/10 in a survey with 86 participants. The rating for possible future usage was 9.0/10. In this article we describe this feature’s design and development process, as well as its technical specification, limitations and future development opportunities.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIntroduction: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) account for 10–15% of all intracranial arteriovenous lesions. Different classification strategies have been proposed in the course of the years. None of them seems to guide the treatment strategy. Objective: We expose the experience of the vascular group at Niguarda Hospital and we propose a very practical classification method based on the location of the shunt. We divide dAVF in sinus and non-sinus in order to simplify our daily practice, as this classification method is simply based on the involvement of the sinuses. Material and Methods: 477 intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas have been treated. 376 underwent endovascular treatment and 101 underwent surgical treatment. Cavernous sinus DAVFs and Galen ampulla malformations have been excluded from this series as they represent a different pathology per se. 376 dAVFs treated by endovascular approach: 180 were sinus and 179 were non-sinus. 101 dAVFs treated with surgical approach: 15 were sinus and 86 were non-sinus. Discussion: Of the 477 intracranial dAVF the recorded mortality and severe disability was 3% and morbidity less than 4%. All patients underwent a postoperative DSA with nearly 100% of complete occlusion of the fistula. At a mean follow-up of 5 years in one case there was a non-sinus fistula recurrence, due to the presence of a partial clipping of “piè” of the vein. Conclusions: The sinus and non-sinus concept has guided our institution for years and has led to good clinical results. This paper intends to share this practical classification with the neurosurgical community.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractTemporal trends of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) were assessed using 86 pooled human milk samples from 59 countries from all United Nations Regional Groups collected between 2008 and 2019 as part of the WHO/UNEP-coordinated exposure studies. The primary objective of these temporal studies is to provide monitoring data for the effectiveness evaluation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). General temporal trends were estimated using data from all participating countries by grouping into three equal four-year periods (2008–2011, 2012–2015, and 2016–2019) reflecting the performance of three rounds of the studies. A more precise approach is the use of data from 24 countries with repeated participation in the WHO/UNEP-coordinated exposure studies, 22 of them in different periods and two in the same period. However, there were no Western European countries with multiple participation, and only two countries from the Asia-Pacific Region with one country submitting two samples in the same period. The country-specific PFOS data showed decreasing tendencies in 19 of the 22 countries with participation in different periods, quite constant levels in two countries and increasing tendencies in one country (from its first participation in 2010 to the second participation in 2015). For the two countries with repeated participation in the same period, it does not seem appropriate to derive country-specific temporal tendencies. An overall decrease of PFOS concentrations over 10 years of 48% and 52%, respectively, was calculated by the Theil–Sen method (1) using all samples and (2) using samples from countries with repeated participation. PFOA concentrations showed decreasing tendencies in 17 countries of the 22 countries with participation in different periods, quite constant levels in two countries and increasing tendencies in three countries (from their first participation between 2009 and 2011 to the second participation in 2015). An overall decrease over 10 years for PFOA concentrations of 42% and 47%, respectively, was calculated by the Theil–Sen method (1) using all samples and (2) using samples from countries with repeated participation. The estimation of general temporal trends for PFHxS was not possible, as in 84% of the samples PFHxS concentrations were below the limit of quantification (5.7 ng/L).

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The use of fine feedstock powder can extend the feasibility and scope of HVOF coatings to new fields of applications. Especially for the purpose of near-net-shape coatings they facilitate short spraying distances, homogeneous layer morphologies, and smooth coating surfaces. However, the small particle sizes also lead to several challenges. One major issue is the in-flight behavior which is distinctly affected by the low mass and relatively large surface of the particles. In this paper, the in-flight and coating characteristics of WC-CoCr 86-10-4 (-10 +2 μm) were investigated. It was determined that the fine powder feedstock shows a high sensitivity to the gas flow, velocity, and temperature of the spray jet. Because of their low mass inertia, their velocity, for example, is actually influenced by local pressure nodes (shock diamonds) in the supersonic flow. Additionally, the relatively large surface of the particles promotes partial overheating and degradation. Nevertheless, the morphological and mechanical properties of the sprayed layer are hardly affected. In fact, the coatings feature a superior surface roughness, porosity, hardness, and wear resistance.

Abstract (sommario):
Results of a study for selecting the optimum parameters of a dual-pressure bottoming cycle as a function of the gas turbine exhaust temperature are presented. Realistic constraints reflecting current technological practice are assumed. Exergy analysis is applied to quantify all loss sources in each cycle. Compared to a single pressure at typical exhaust gas temperatures the optimized dual-pressure configuration is found to increase steam cycle work output on the order of 3%, principally through the reduction of the heat transfer irreversibility from about 15% to 8% of the exhaust gas energy. Measures to further reduce the heat transfer irreversibility such as three-pressure systems or use of multi-component mixtures can therefore only result in modest additional gains. The results for the efficiency of optimized dual pressure bottoming cycles are correlated against turbine exit temperature by simple polynomial fits. Sensitivity of the results to variations in the constraint envelope are presented.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Cored wires show a high potential for production of protective coatings for combined corrosion and wear applications. Iron and nickel based grooved cored wires without and with different reinforcing carbide fillers have been sprayed by arc- and high velocity combustion wire (HVCW) spraying with a Praxair Type 216 gun. Depending on the wear mechanism coatings with a similar abrasive or oscillating wear resistance like HVOF WC/Co/Cr 86/10/4 have been produced. For effective protection against oscillating wear wires with a large diameter and therefore a high content of reinforcing carbide filler have to be applied. All nickel based coatings with chromium addition show an improved corrosion resistance compared to HVOF-sprayed WC/Co/Cr 86/10/4. For coatings from wires with NiCr 80/20 velum no effect of severe sulphurous corrosion in the DIN 50018 test is observed. HVCW-spraying is especially suitable, when only a low degree of interaction between velum and filler material is wanted as for cermet-like coatings. Conventional arc-spraying rather meets the demands of a high degree of interaction between velum and filler necessary for the production of pure metallic coatings like NiCrBSi. All manufactured coatings show good machinability.

Abstract (sommario):
Odonates are significant components of most wetland habitats and important indicators of their health. At Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO), we compiled odonate records dating back to the 1980s and, based partly on that data, identified 41 wetland sites for sampling, representing six freshwater habitats (kettle pond, inter-dune pond, dune slack, riparian marsh, vernal pool, and bog). We surveyed these sites for adult odonates during the 2016?2018 field seasons. Ten sites were surveyed all three years (total 19-20 surveys/site); all ten had at least some historical data. The remaining 31 sites were surveyed for one field season, a total of 6-8 times each. We conducted 391 surveys, recording 53,435 individuals and 74 species (45 dragonflies and 29 damselflies); not all individuals were identified to species. Abundance and species richness varied significantly between habitats. For all individuals recorded, abundance was greatest at vernal pools and kettle ponds. Riparian sites had the lowest abundance. Species richness was highest at kettle ponds, including several species of conservation concern, two listed as Threatened by the state of Massachusetts. Riparian marshes and dune slacks had relatively low richness. Among the 10 sites surveyed three years, we found significant annual variation in abundance and species richness. There was significant and generally greater between-site variation in abundance within a year than between years at sites. Community analysis found pond depth, habitat type, and presence of predaceous fish were significant factors explaining between-site variation in community composition. Habitats also differed significantly in community composition. Multidimensional scaling showed sites tend to cluster together by habitat type. Vernal ponds have the highest average community similarity to all other habitats (53.5%), with dune slack (52.9%), bog (52.0%) and inter-dune (51.5%) close behind. In contrast, riparian sites (46.3%) and kettle ponds (39.5%) are least similar to other habitats. Overall, 86 species of odonates have been recorded at CACO, a rich and diverse assemblage reflecting the variety and quality of freshwater habitats present. Although these habitats are relatively well-protected, stressors include climate change, nutrient inflow from adjacent development, road runoff, and trampling of emergent vegetation. A plan for monitoring is beyond the scope of this project. Ideally, it would be best to use the insight into odonate variation obtained from these surveys to develop a monitoring program designed to meet standards of statistical confidence and power currently employed in NPS monitoring programs.

Abstract (sommario):
Five-needle white pines (Family Pinaceae, Genus Pinus, Subgenus Strobus), and in particular whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis), limber pine (P. flexilis), and foxtail pine (P. balfouriana) are foundation species in upper subalpine and treeline forests of several National Park Service Pacific West Region parks, including Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks (SEKI) and Yosemite National Park (YOSE). The Sierra Nevada Network Inventory & Monitoring Program, in collaboration with the Klamath Network, Upper Columbia Basin Network, and Mojave Desert Network have implemented a joint long-term monitoring protocol to assess the current status and future trends in high elevation white pine communities. Key demographic parameters within white pine forest communities will be estimated by monitoring individual trees within permanent plots through time. This report documents the results of the 2021 field season, which was the eighth year of monitoring in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks (SEKI) and Yosemite National Park (YOSE). The 2021 goal was to complete the third full re-measure of the second of three rotating panels (Panel 2) for each species-park population: YOSE-whitebark pine, SEKI-whitebark pine, and SEKI-foxtail pine. Each panel consists of 12 permanent 50 x 50 m (2,500 m2) plots that were randomly selected for each of the three populations. The full sampling array thus includes a total of 36 whitebark pine plots in YOSE, 36 whitebark pine plots in SEKI, and 36 foxtail pine plots in SEKI. Data from plot surveys will be used to characterize white pine forest community dynamics in SEKI and YOSE, including changes in tree species composition, forest structure, forest health, and demographics. The first full measure of all Panel 2 plots was completed over two years in 2013-2014, then a full remeasure of both parks? whitebark pine Panel 2 was conducted in 2016, with 10 of 12 SEKI-foxtail plots sampled that year. A third remeasure of all Panel 2 plots was not possible in 2021 because a smaller crew size was necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, the crew visited 37 sites, and sampled 31, during the 2021 field season. One plot in the YOSE whitebark pine frame was uninstalled before reading and one plot in the SEKI whitebark pine frame was uninstalled after reading, both for safety concerns. Four plots were not visited due to lack of capacity with the reduced crew size: one in each of the YOSE and SEKI whitebark frames, and three in the SEKI foxtail frame. A plot from Panel 3 in each of the parks? whitebark frames was measured, for a total of 11 plots measured in each whitebark pine frame. Nine plots were measured in the SEKI foxtail pine frame. Within the 31 plots completed, a total of 5,728 trees was measured. Species composition, forest structure, and factors affecting tree health and reproduction, including incidence and severity of white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola) infection, mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) infestation, dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium spp.) infection, canopy kill, female cone production and regeneration were recorded. During the 2021 field season, crews continued to count the total number of mature cones per tree for whitebark and foxtail pine, use crown condition codes to assess crown health, and tag individual seedlings to be tracked through time. All three of these procedures started in 2017 and are to be evaluated by each of the three participating networks over several years, to determine whether they should become permanent changes to the monitoring protocol. In YOSE, 11 whitebark pine plots were re-measured, from Panels 2 and 3. A total of 2,810 trees were sampled, which included 586 live whitebark pine trees and 2,097 other live conifers. An additional 127 trees (including 17 whitebark pine) were recorded as dead. The forest crew noted little sign of white pine blister rust (WPBR) in Yosemite in 2021, and just a single inactive canker was observed on one whitebark pine in Panel 3, Plot 42, near Dana Meadows. This infection was new to plot 42, and it expands the total number of plots where white pine blister rust has been documented in Yosemite to six. The crew also noted little mountain pine beetle activity, documenting beetle galleries on 15 lodgepole pines in three Panel 2 plots. Dwarf mistletoe was not observed. The average number of live whitebark pine trees per plot was 53 (SD = 56). This was a low cone crop year for whitebark pine, with two percent of live whitebark pine trees producing female cones. Cone bearing trees averaged 2 (SD = 1) cones per tree. Whitebark pine seedling density averaged 90 (SD = 157) seedlings per hectare. The largest number of whitebark pine seedlings found in a plot was four, and three of the eleven plots contained whitebark seedlings. In SEKI, 10 of 12 Panel 2, and one Panel 3, whitebark pine plots were re-measured. Within these plots, 1,246 live whitebark pine, 30 live foxtail pine, and 861 other live conifers were sampled. WPBR was infrequently documented in the SEKI whitebark frame as well, with indicators of infection in Plot 31 near Window Creek and Plot 44 near Upper State Lake. These were the first infections documented in these plots, bringing the number of plots where WPBR has been documented in the SEKI whitebark panel to nine. Although WPBR was documented in Plot 27 near Charlotte Dome in 2016, it was not documented this year because putative cankers showing three signs of infection in 2016 showed only two or fewer signs in 2021. Mountain pine beetle activity was observed in one live lodgepole pine and two recently dead whitebark pine, within three plots in the SEKI whitebark sample frame. An exception to the low levels of mountain pine beetle activity was outside Plot 31 in the Window Creek area, where the forest crew noted many recently dead whitebark pine with signs of beetle activity. Dwarf mistletoe was not encountered. The average number of live whitebark pine trees per plot was 113 (SD = 86). Less than one percent of live whitebark pine trees produced female cones, each producing on average 2 (SD = 1) cones. Whitebark seedling regeneration averaged 303 (SD = 319) seedlings per hectare. The largest number of whitebark seedlings found in a plot was eight, and eight of the 11 plots contained whitebark seedlings. Nine of the 12 SEKI foxtail Panel 3 plots were remeasured. Within these plots, 413 live foxtail pine, 67 live whitebark pine, and 402 other live conifers were sampled. Ninety-two dead or recently dead trees were also documented, 65 of which were foxtail pine. No signs of blister rust infection, mistletoe, or mountain pine beetle were observed in the foxtail plots sampled. The average number of foxtail pine trees per plot was 46 (SD = 33). Fifty-four percent of the foxtail pine trees produced female cones, averaging 14 (SD =15) cones/tree. Only one foxtail pine seedling was recorded within the 9 foxtail pine plots, resulting in an estimated 14 (SD = 41) seedlings per hectare. Eight whitebark pine seedlings were also found within two plots.

Abstract (sommario):
The shear key is crucial to the overall mechanical performance of the structure. A new type of semi-rigid connector-flange folded web shear key was proposed to determine the effective unity of higher bearing capacity and deformation. A total of five groups of specimens were designed, and the push-out test method was used to evaluate the ultimate bearing capacity, bond-slip process, failure mode, and strain distribution of the new shear key. The results show that before sliding, the embedded effect of the concrete and shear key is significant, and it has a significant sliding stiffness. After sliding, the steel plate in the middle of the opening of the outer folded plate buckles, which shows certain semi-rigid characteristics. Compared with equal-area studs, the bearing capacity of the new shear key is increased by more than 40%, and the deformation capacity exceeds 60 %, indicating good bond-slip performance. The constraint range of the shear key is greatly improved compared with the stud, and a trapezoidal area of constraint centered on the shear key is formed, accounting for more than half of the area of the concrete slab. Based on an experimental study, a practical calculation method of ultimate bearing capacity of the shear key is proposed, which can meet engineering safety requirements. Based on the analysis of bond-slip characteristics of different forms of shear keys, compared with the rigid T-shaped shear key, the slip load and ultimate bearing capacity of the new shear key are found to be increased by 39 % and 74 %, respectively, and the deformation capacity is increased more than 10-fold. Compared with the flexible stud shear connectors, the sliding load is increased by 86 %, the ultimate bearing capacity is increased more two-fold, and the stiffness is increased by nearly five times. The device exhibits good comprehensive performance.
