Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The fractional calculus gains wide applications nowadays in all fields. The implementation of the fractional differential operators on the partial differential equations make it more reality. The space-time-fractional differential equations mathematically model physical, biological, medical, etc., and their solutions explain the real life problems more than the classical partial differential equations. Some new published papers on this field made many treatments and approximations to the fractional differential operators making them loose their physical and mathematical meanings. In this paper, I answer the question: why do we need the fractional operators?. I give brief notes on some important fractional differential operators and their Grünwald-Letnikov schemes. I implement the Caputo time fractional operator and the Riesz-Feller operator on some physical and stochastic problems. I give some numerical results to some physical models to show the efficiency of the Grünwald-Letnikov scheme and its shifted formulae. Abstract (sommario):
Fiber nettle is a cultivated form of the wild nettle and could become a renewable recourse of natural fibres in Lithuania. The aim of research was to investigate propagation ability (shoot rooting) of stinging nettle, investigate influence of different crop density on plant biometrical indices, productivity. The investigation was carried out at the Upytė Research Station of LIA in 2008-2009. The shoots of stinging nettle were cut into segments, the top part of the stem and the segments of the stem were separated and planted in the filed separately. The crop of different density was established: 60x60 and 60x100 cm. The results of our investigation showed, that stinging nettle may be propagated in vegetative way, rooted under field conditions. The top parts of the stem shoved slightly better rooting results than the segments of the stem. Plants from the crop of 2nd year, 60x60, were grosser, more productive than that of the 1st year crop. Plants of the 1st year crop, 60x100, had more stems per plant than that of 1st year crop, 60x60, but amount of stems (units ha-1) was higher in the crop of 1st year crop, 60x60.

Recently all countries are looking for the renewable resources. Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) is a perennial plant owning many valuable properties, including yielding natural fibres. Fiber nettle is a cultivated form of the wild nettle. The aim of the research was to investigate changes of productivity of stinging nettle’s crop established at different crop densities. Main criterion discussed in the article is the number of the stems per measuring unit (i.e., crop density). The investigation was carried out at the Upytė Research Station of LRCAF in 2008-2012. The crop of different implantation density was established: 60x60 and 60x100 cm. The results of our investigation show that in the first cropping year stinging nettle produced 25-43 stems per plant. Plants from the crop of 2nd year, 60x60, were grosser, more productive than that of the 1st year crop. Plants of the 1st year crop, 60x100, had more stems per plant than that of 1st year crop, 60x60, but amount of stems per ha1 was higher in the crop of 1st year crop, 60x60. The inundation early in 2010 led to the decrease of plant density of stinging nettle’s crop. Crop density in the spring was lower than that in the autumn. The greatest increase of amount of stems per plant was found in the plots of lower implantation density (60 x 100 cm). It could be that the optimal crop density (112-136 plants m-2) was already achieved in the crop of 4th and 5th cropping year, and it will not increase any more in more matured crop in following years. Further investigation would be intrigued.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper deals with the determination of the basic corrosion characteristics of metallic materials used as components in car construction to achieve a lighter vehicle with higher rigidity, a more complex “hybrid” of diverse materials is needed for the car body structure. Due to the different types of material used in the manufacture of components and their interactions, the issue of assessing the impact of bimetallic corrosion is currently relevant. Based on the potential difference at the end of the corrosion test, it was possible to determine the “anode index”, which determines the risk of degradation of materials due to bimetallic corrosion. In our case, a hot-galvanized steel sheet/Al alloy EN AW-6060 couple in deicing salt and hot-galvanized steel sheet/steel S355J0 couple in simulated acid rain solution (SARS) has proven to be “safest” and usable even for more aggressive environments. Hot-galvanized steel sheet/Al alloy EN AW-6060 in SARS solution is suitable for slightly aggressive environments. Stainless steel AISI 304/silumin A356 in deicing salt, stainless steel AISI 304/Al alloy EN AW-6060 in deicing salt, and stainless steel AISI 306/Al alloy EN AW-6060 in simulated exhaust gas environment (SEG solution) are not suitable for non-aggressive environments.

Abstract (sommario):
A contribution deals with an evaluation of harvest losses within a full mechanised berries harvest using two self-propelled harvesters GREGOIRE G 152 and NEW HOLLAND VL 6060 differing in kinds of harvesting and catching mechanisms. Observation was done in vineyards of ZVOS Hustopeče joint–stock company at harvest of Müller Thurgau and Lemberger varieties in a period 2009–2010. Results gained under operating conditions showed that both self-propelled harvesters reached a comparable quality of a harvested product. There were observed losses by a slump in a case of using GREGOIRE G 152 harvester 0.8–1.45%. By using NEW HOLLAND VL 6060 the losses were 0.86–1.52% and data were gained with a respect to vine condition, the variety and the vintage. Next to losses by the slump also losses as non-harvested product were observed. Using GREGOIRE G 152 were reached 1.08–2.56% of non-harvested product losses and in a case of NEW HOLLAND VL 6060 similarly 1.17–2.22%. However a value of the non-harvested product losses cannot be perceived absolutely because in a practice the non-harvested grapes are consequently picked up manually. Total losses perceived as a sum of losses by the slump and non-harvested losses values were at GREGOIRE G 152 harvester 2–4% and at NEW HOLLAND VL 6060 harvester 2–3.7% of total hectare yield.

Abstract (sommario):
A thin cylindrical tube model was established. Its energy absorption property was analyzed when crushing through finite element method. Then its validity was verified through the corresponding experiment. On the basis of the above research, two different material tubes were selected which were aluminum alloy 6060 and cold-roll steel B340LA. Considering the mechanical performance of these two materials might change during dynamic crushing, so the tubes were crushed in three modes including low speed, medium speed and high speed. In order to predict the wall thickness of the two different material tubes when their energy absorption was equal, two methods were proposed which were overall energy method and the stress-strain energy method. Then get the mass ratio of the two different material tubes when they absorbed equal energy. The results showed that the mass of aluminum alloy 6060 tube was about 86%-90% to B340LA tube when they absorbed equal energy. More than 10% lightweight effect could be obtained when cold-roll steel B340LA tube was instead with aluminum alloy 6060 under the condition of their absorbing equal energy.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the decisive criteria in the selection of material between steel and aluminium could be the welding RS (residual stresses), which play an important role for the fatigue behavior of the structures under cycling loading. In the current paper simulations in commercial FE software ANSYS were carried out, in order to calculate the welding RS field for three different materials: structural steel S355 and the aluminum grades EN AW-6060 and EN AW-5754. In the case of EN AW-6060 influence of recrystallization on the yield strength of the HAZ (heat affected zone) was taken into consideration.

This paper presents impulse tests results on a zinc oxide (ZnO) surge arrester connected to four ground electrodes, with its resistance values ranging from 17 Ω to 104 Ω. It has been noted that when in series with various ground resistance values, the voltage–current characteristics of the zinc oxide (ZnO) surge arrester are far from the one tested using a common grounding, which is a standard measurement method described in IEC 60060-1. This paper clarifies the relationship between the surge arrester with various ground electrodes and its performance when tested with a common practice, based on IEC 60060-1. The tests carried out on a 15 kV ZnO surge arrester, under high-impulse conditions by field measurements, provide important information on the characteristics and ability of the surge arrester to adequately function in various ground electrodes.

Geometric parallelization was tested on the Intel Hypercube with 32 MIMD processors of 1860 type, each with 16 Mbytes of distributed memory. We applied it to Ising models in two and three dimensions as well as to neural networks and two-dimensional hydrodynamic cellular automata. For system sizes suited to this machine, up to 60960*60960 and 1410*1410*1408 Ising spins, we found nearly hundred percent parallel efficiency in spite of the needed inter-processor communications. For small systems, the observed deviations from full efficiency were compared with the scaling concepts of Heermann and Burkitt and of Jakobs and Gerling. For Ising models, we determined the Glauber kinetic exponent z≃2.18 in two dimensions and confirmed the stretched exponential relaxation of the magnetization towards the spontaneous magnetization below Tc. For three dimensions we found z≃2.09 and simple exponential relaxation.

In the last years researches on thixotropic materials have been developed in order to introduce this new technology in manufacturing processes. For instance, when considering high pressure die-casting, several applications are present in literature mainly related to low melting point alloys (Al and Mg) because of the limited die life experienced when casting higher melting materials. In this case, semi-solid metal forming allows to work at lower temperature with subsequent increase in die life and reduction in production costs, combined with lower porosity level in the casting. On the other hand, in the case of conventional forging, semi-solid processing needs higher performance materials and/or coatings for the mould because of the working temperatures; however, the advantages of obtaining near net shape part in a single step, with reduced machining and finishing costs, make the semi-solid technology competitive. The present paper deals with the thixoforging of aluminum 6061 alloy, whose semi-solid feedstock material was obtained by ultrasound treatment. The application of ultrasonic waves to liquid or solidifying alloys has been already demonstrated to be an effective technique for the obtainment of globular microstructure. Along with a refining effect, ultrasound can also produce a series of beneficial effects, such as hydrogen degassing or oxide and non-metallic inclusion removal, which all improve mechanical properties of the component. The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of process parameters on final forged part quality. The solid fraction percentage as a function of temperature was measured by differential scanning calorimetric analysis. The geometry of the die was properly designed and optimized by FEM simulation in order to be suitable for forging semi-solid material, allowing a comparison with conventional forging process. 14 K-type thermocouples were used for monitoring the temperature of top and bottom dies; an instrumented 100 ton press was also equipped with load cells to acquire the forging force. A deep metallurgical analysis of the forged parts was performed in order to evaluate their mechanical properties and quality.

The present study focused on the behaviour of the AW-6060 aluminium alloy in peak temper condition T6 under a wide range of loads: tensile loading, projectile and explosion. The alloy is used as a structural component of civil engineering structures exposed to static or dynamic loads. Therefore, it was crucial to determine the material’s behaviour at low and intermediate rates of deformation. Despite the fact that the evaluation of the strain rate sensitivity of the AW-6060 aluminium alloy has already been discussed in literature, the authors of this paper wished to further investigate this topic. They conducted tensile tests and confirmed the thesis that the AW-6060 T6 aluminium alloy has low strain rate sensitivity at room temperature. In addition, the fracture surfaces subjected to different loading (tensile loading, projectile and explosion) were investigated and compared using a scanning electron microscope, because the authors of this paper were trying to develop a new methodology for predicting how samples had been loaded before failure occurred based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs. Projectile and explosion tests were performed mainly for the SEM observation of the fracture surfaces. These tests were unconventional and they represent the originality of this research. It was found that the type of loading had an impact on the fracture surface.

Specimens of three Al-Mg-Si alloys, 6060, 6005 and 6082, were solution heat treated, stored at different temperatures for different time, and artificially aged. Properties were measured before and after artificial ageing. The natural ageing response of the alloys is dependent on the storage temperature. Decreasing storage temperature leads to a delayed onset of natural ageing, but also to a higher strength after prolonged ageing, particularly for lean alloys such as 6060. The temperature and time of intermediate storage between solution heat treatment and artificial ageing has a significant effect on the strength of the artificially aged material. For the 6005 and 6082 alloys the processes that take place during natural ageing lead to a reduced strength after artificial ageing.

Hybridumformprozesse erlauben die Herstellung von Leichtbaukomponenten mit einsatzspezifischen Eigenschaften. Dieser Beitrag untersucht die Kaltumformung verbundstranggepresster Aluminium-Hybridrohteile aus AW-6060 mit einem innenliegenden, rohrförmigen Element aus AW-7075 mit unterschiedlichen Dimensionen. Es werden die Spannungs- und Dehnungszustände in der Grenzfläche der unterschiedlichen Werkstoffe analysiert, mit dem Ziel der Erhaltung des zuvor durch Verbundstrangpressen erzeugten Stoffschlusses.   Hybrid metal forming processes allow the manufacture of lightweight components with application-specific properties. This article investigates the cold forging of compound hot extruded aluminum billets made from AA 6060 with an internal tubular reinforcing element consisting of AA 7075 with multiple diameter variations. Stress and strain states in the interface between the different materials are analyzed to maintain metal bond, created by previous compound hot extrusion.

The field experiment was conducted during the winter (kharif) seasons of 2021-22 and 2022-23 at CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research Centre Purara, Bageshwar, Uttarakhand. The study's objective was to investigate the most effective combinations of plant spacing configurations and NPK levels to enhance biomass and seed yield of kalmegh [Andrographis paniculata (Burm. F.) Wall ex. Nees] under the Western Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. The experiment consisted of nine treatments, comprising three different plant spacing (60x30 cm, 60 x45 cm, 60x60 cm) and three NPK levels (40:30:20, 80:60:30, 120:90:40), arranged in factorial randomised block design. The results indicated that treatment T3 (120:90:40 NPK) and spacing S3 (60x60 cm) consistently demonstrated superior performance, resulting in the highest plant height, number of branches, LAI, total dry matter weight, dry seed weight, and leaf stem ratio. Treatment T2 (80:60:30 NPK) and spacing S2 (60x 45 cm) displayed intermediate results, while treatment T1 (40:30:20 NPK) and spacing S1 (60 x 30 cm) exhibited relatively lower values for most parameters.

Abstract (sommario):
The scope of this paper is the investigation of the effect of precipitation on an EN AW-6060 aluminum alloy by measuring mechanical, physical, and thermal properties. According to the exothermic peaks that appeared on the DSC thermogram and thermal diffusivity curve, parameters for isochronal aging treatment were defined. Thermal, mechanical, physical, and structural properties were investigated during the isochronal aging. The maximal enhancement of mechanical properties was achieved after aging at 230 °C for 30 min, whereas the most favorable thermal properties were obtained after aging at the same temperature for 60 min. During the aging, the precipitation from the solid solution caused a gradual increase in electrical conductivity. SEM/EDS microstructural investigations confirmed the existence of precipitated phases and provided the insight into their distribution within the microstructure. Abstract (sommario):
The surface characteristics of an extruded 6060 aluminium alloy were investigated with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed that the extruded surface was covered by oxides of aluminium and magnesium. The thickness of aluminium oxide was found to change along the extrusion direction with the thinnest and thickest oxide at the beginning and end of the extrudate, respectively. Magnesium segregation was found on the surface of the extrusion with the highest and lowest Mg concentration at the beginning and end of the extrudate, respectively. This is the inverse result of that expected where increasing Mg content was believed to be associated with film instability and thicker films.

e20599 Background: The anti-PD-1 antibodies nivolumab and pembrolizumab have demonstrated improved overall survival (OS) and progression free survival (PFS) in a subset of patients with metastatic or locally advanced lung cancer (LC). To date, no blood biomarkers have been identified to predict clinical outcome to anti-PD-1 agents. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 52 patients with advanced LC and treated with anti-PD-1 antibodies in a single institution was performed. White blood cell count (WBC), absolute neutrophil count (ANC), absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), absolute neutrophil to absolute lymphocyte count ratio (ANC/ALC), absolute eosinophil count (AEC), and platelet counts at baseline before start of anti-PD-1 antibody were assessed. Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression analysis were done. Results: 48 patients were treated with nivolumab (92.3%) and 4 patients with pembrolizumab (7.7%). Median follow up was 13.6 months and median OS was 26 months. Higher baseline ANC and ANC/ALC ratio significantly correlated with worse clinical outcomes. Patients with baseline ANC > 6060/mm3 had a significantly increased risk of death [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.46; 95% CI 1.12–5.42, P = 0.025] and of progression on anti-PD-1 antibody [HR = 2.41; 95% CI 1.25–4.64, P = 0.009] compared with patients with ANC ≤6060/mm3. Similarly, patients with baseline ANC/ALC ratio ≥ 4.59 had a significantly increased risk of death [HR = 2.41; 95% CI 1.11–5.24, P = 0.027] and of progression on anti-PD-1 antibody [HR = 2.08; 95% CI 1.10–3.95, P = 0.027] compared with patients with ANC/ALC < 4.59. One year survival rate in patients who had ANC < 3390/mm3, ANC 3390-6060/mm3 and ANC > 6060/mm3 were 86.5%, 76.9% and 48.1% respectively. Conclusions: Increased baseline ANC and ANC/ALC were associated with poor PFS and OS in LC patients treated with anti-PD-1 antibodies. Although these findings need to be validated in a large sample size, our data suggested that baseline ANC and ANC/ALC ratio might help the risk stratification and assist treatment strategies. The potential predictive value of peripheral blood biomarkers for clinical outcomes to anti-PD-1 antibody should be further investigated in a prospective study.

Salinity episodes that are common in arid regions, characterized by dryland, are adversely affecting crop production worldwide. This study evaluated the effectiveness of brassinolide (BL) in ameliorating salinity stress imposed on soybean at four levels (control (1.10), 32.40, 60.60 and 86.30 mM/L NaCl) in factorial combination with six BL application frequency (control (BL0), application at seedling (BL1), flowering (BL2), podding (BL3), seedling + flowering (BL4) and seedling + flowering + podding (BL5)) stages. Plant growth attributes, seed yield, and N, P, K, Ca and Mg partitioning to leaves, stems and roots, as well as protein and seed-N concentrations, were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) reduced by salinity stress. These trends were ascribed to considerable impairments in the photosynthetic pigments, photosynthetically active radiation, leaf stomatal conductance and relative water content in the leaves of seedlings under stress. The activity of peroxidase and superoxidase significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased with salinity. Foliar spray with BL significantly (p ≤ 0.05) improved the photosynthetic attributes, as well as nutrient partitioning, under stress, and alleviated ion toxicity by maintaining a favourable K+/Na+ ratio and decreasing oxidative damage. Foliar spray with brassinolide could sustain soybean growth and seed yield at salt concentrations up to 60.60 mM/L NaCl.

For assessment of the insulation performance of high-voltage (HV) equipment installed in extra-high-voltage (EHV) systems, switching impulse voltage tests are performed in an HV testing laboratory. The waveform parameters of the switching impulse voltages are defined by peak voltage (Up), time to crest (Tp), and time to half (T2) according to IEC 60060-1. In this paper, a new, simplified, and accurate approach used for determination of the waveform parameters of the switching impulse voltages is presented. The formula used in the evaluation of Tp was derived from analytically simulated two-exponential waveforms, where Tp and T2 are in the ranges of 20 μs to 300 μs and 1000 μs to 4000 μs, respectively. The accuracy of the proposed approach was validated by the waveforms collected from the test waveform data generator (TDG) provided by IEC 61083-2, simulations, and experiments. It is found that the accuracy of the proposed approach is relatively higher than the expressions provided by IEC 60060-1 and previously developed. The proposed method is an alternative and useful approach for evaluating the waveform parameters of the standard switching impulse voltage.

A heat sink is a heat exchanger that transfers heat from an electrical or mechanical component to a fluid by providing an efficient path for heat to be transferred and dissipated. In this research paper, the model of the heat sink is made by using Auto Desk Fusion 360 software to build the components. With the help of Ansys software, the thermal analysis of the heat sink (heat transfer simulation to visualize the whole heat exchanging process) is carried out by considering the alloy 6060 Aluminum with and without anodized. From this research output, the anodized heat sink has shown improved results in various thermal properties compared to the non-anodized heat sink. It is also shown to improve the corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and electrical isolation of the heat sink. These results will support better for the heat sink manufacturer using the anodized 6060 Aluminum alloy in the near future.

A process for producing a black oxide coating on aluminum alloy was investigated in the present work. The blackening process is widely used in industrial applications, but it was not deeply studied for aluminum alloys. The aim of this work is to study the black coating obtained on AA6060 surfaces employing two different solutions, both containing potassium permanganate, copper nitrate and nitric acid. The first solution carried out the coloring treatment at 50 °C, whereas the second one was done at room temperature. Different immersion times were investigated. The morphology of the coating was investigated by means of optical and electron microscopy to evaluate the color of the layer and the presence of defects, porosities, and cracks. X-ray diffraction analysis was performed to evaluate the protective layer composition. The corrosion properties were studied with potentiodynamic polarization tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. The results showed that the blackening process performed at room temperature, besides the clear advantages in term of costs and safety, obtained more uniform coatings with increased corrosion performance in comparison with the ones obtained at higher temperatures.

<p>This study reports on an investigation of factors affect the process of compacting Al chips which are used to direct scrap processing through the forward extrusion method. EN AW 6060 chips of different geometry and types were mainly used as the experimental material. The chips were compacted in a die with a vertical channel (10.3mm in diameter). To provide a range of processing conditions, three different weights were selected and compacting was performed under five, different compacting pressures. The movement of the chips within the die during compacting was analysed through numerical simulations using Deform 2D software. Study of the compacting process optimal parameters for increasing the density and enhancing the density distribution were defined. The results from our study clearly show that optimal conditions are obtained when the proportion of D/h is 1/1.1. Moreover, it was recognized that in the process of small chips compacting, there was obtained lower density than in the case of large chips.</p>

With the development of manufacturing processes, an increase in the importance of metal-fibre composites in materials engineering is observed. These are materials consisting of appropriately arranged layers of metal and various types of fibres. The very wide use of composite materials in the construction of machine and equipment components means they are often exposed to work in variable temperature conditions. The aim of this article was analysis of the thermal expansion of typical composites: carbon fibre-reinforced polymer, glass fibre-reinforced polymer, glass-reinforced aluminium laminate and carbon-fibre reinforced aluminium laminate. EN AW-6060 aluminium alloy was used as the reference material. The aim of the dilatometric tests was to determine the coefficient of thermal expansion and the dimensional stability of composite materials at elevated temperatures up to 100 °C. The EN AW-6060 aluminium alloy was characterized by the highest linear expansion coefficient (20.27×10−6 1/K). Composites containing glass fibres were characterized by the lowest positive linear thermal expansion coefficient. Among the composite materials tested, CARALLs exhibit the lowest thermal expansion coefficient.

Purpose: All results obtained in the present study allowed to analyse the changes in the microstructure and texture of the commercial 6060 aluminium alloy, after deformation process by severe plastic deformation. There were compare two deformation degree samples received by cumulative hydrostatic extrusion. Design/methodology/approach: The samples of the 6060 alloy were subjected to a onepass and three-passes extrusion process and next the age hardening. The microstructure changes were investigated by using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. To study the texture evolution the X-ray diffraction were made. Findings: The microscopic observations results presented the refinement of microstructure as a result of deformation process. The evolution of fibrous character of texture was observed. There were noted the disappearance of fibrous component <100> during subsequent deformation processes and generation the fibrous component <111> after high deformation degree. In addition, for each state, the presence of cubic texture component was recorded. Research limitations/implications: For the future research are planned to analyse changes in mechanical properties after hydrostatic extrusion combinate with age hardening of investigated materials. Originality/value: The paper focuses on the investigation of microstructure and texture evolution after modern method of plastic deformation.

Aluminum alloy is playing a greater role in all engineering fields. Modern mechanical parts require superior properties, the material available in pure form do not have the required mechanical properties such as strength, hardness, corrosion resistance, etc. A Composite is formed by two or more physically and chemically distinct substances and which is fabricated to enhance the distinctiveness of base metal. The Present work has focused on properties of Carbon nanoTubes (CNTs) reinforced aluminum metal matrix Al 6060; Nanocomposites. These Nanocomposites are fabricated by using the stir casting method by varying the CNT reinforcement with a multi-walled size 10 to 15 nm weight percentage (0.3%, 0.7%, and 1%) of the Al 6060 matrix. To study its properties, the fabricated specimens are tested for mechanical properties. The properties of the Nanocomposites are found to be greatly influenced by the increase in weight percentage of reinforcement. With the mixing of different weight proportion reinforced particles by stir casting process properties of Tensile, Flexural, Impact, and hardness strength of composites are increased. The experimental values obtained from tests more useful in the development of Nanocomposites for different applications.

A study of the influence of minor additions of copper or manganese on hot tear susceptibility in Al-Mg-Si alloys has been conducted. Testing was carried out using a laboratory scale hot tearing rig and the results were validated using an analysis of cast house cracking scrap data for 6060 and 6063 extrusion billet alloys. Mn content was found to have a strong influence on hot tearing rates.

A process innovation is proposed by the authors to weld aluminum alloy tubes by means of a high power diode laser. In order to make the temperature profile uniform along the entire welding line, multiple passes of the laser source along the welding path can be performed at very high scan speeds. In the current study, this effect is achieved by focusing the standstill laser spot on the external surface of the aluminum alloy tubes which were put in rotation at high speed. The tubes were clamped together by using a threaded rod passing inside the tubes. Experimental tests were performed by changing the aluminum alloy heat treatment (6060 T1 and 6060 T5), the length of the samples to weld (80 and 100 mm), and the laser power (ranging from 800 to 950 W). The outer diameter of the tube was 10 mm, the thickness was 1 mm, and the rotational speed was kept constant at 1000 rpm. The welding time was monitored during the tests and ranged from 30 to 100 s in dependence on the material and process parameters. Specimens were extracted from the joints to perform tensile tests so as to measure the tensile strength. In the best condition, a high tensile strength was obtained (about 140 MPa).

Desirable properties including strength, ductility and extrudability of 6060 Al-alloys are highly dependent on processing to control the development of microstructural features. In this study, the process chain of an extrudable 6060 Al-alloy was modeled in an Integrated Computational Materials Engineering framework and validated experimentally via quantitative SEM-EDX and TEM. All critical processing stages were considered including casting, homogenization heating and holding, extrusion cooling and two-stage aging. Segregation and intermetallics formation were accurately predicted and experimentally verified in the as-cast condition. Diffusion simulations predicted the dissolution of intermetallics and completion of β-AlFeSi to α-AlFeSi transformation during homogenization, in excellent agreement with quantitative SEM-EDX characterization. Precipitation simulations predicted the development of a β″ strengthening dispersion during extrusion cooling and aging. Needle-shaped β″ precipitates were observed and analyzed with quantitative high-resolution TEM, validating predictions. Ensuing precipitation strengthening was modeled in terms of aging time, presenting good agreement with yield strength measurements. Precipitate-Free Zones and coarse, metastable β-type particles on dispersoids and grain boundaries were investigated. The proposed integrated modeling and characterization approach considers all critical processing stages and could be used to optimize processing of extrudable 6xxx Al-alloys, providing insight to mechanisms controlling microstructural evolution and resulting properties.
