Abstract (sommario):
Aim This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia and change in bone mineral density (BMD) and functional outcome in hip arthroplasty patients. Methods: Among the 221 patients who had undergone hip arthroplasty, 147 patients were enrolled. All patients were divided into 2 groups according to presence of sarcopenia. Bone mineral density (BMD) at hospitalization and 1-year after surgery and Barthel index was measured at the time of before injury, hospitalization, 3 months and 1-year after surgery. Results: BMD at hospitalization showed .627 ± .082 (g/cm2) in Sarcopenia and .726 ± .059 (g/cm2) in Non-sarcopenia at femur (total) site ( P < .001), .531 ± .085 (g/cm2) vs .629 ± .057 (g/cm2) at femur neck site (P=.002), .715 ± .084 (g/cm2) vs .807 ± .058 (g/cm2) at lumbar (L1-L4) site ( P < .001). BMD at 1-year follow-up period, Sarcopenia showed .626 ± .082 (g/cm2) and Non-sarcopenia showed .725 ± .060 (g/cm2) at femur (total) site ( P < .001), .530 ± .085 (g/cm2) vs .629 ± .058 (g/cm2) at femur neck site ( P < .001), .715 ± .084 (g/cm2) vs .806 ± .058 (g/cm2) at lumbar (L1-L4) site ( P < .001). Change of BMD showed −.01 ± .25% for Sarcopenia and −.15 ± .47% for Non-sarcopenia in femur (total) site (P=.089), −.08 ± .63% vs −.01 ± 1.01% in femur neck site ( P = .058), .00 ± .09% vs −.12 ± .33% for each group in lumbar (L1-L4) site ( P = .052). Barthel index score showed 79.94 ± 5.66 for Sarcopenia and 84.74 ± 5.36 for Non-sarcopenia at pre-injury status ( P < .001), 33.89 ± 4.94 vs 33.87 ± 5.36 at the time of hospitalization ( P = .977), 57.42 ± 7.19 vs 60.06 ± 5.39 at 3 months follow up ( P = .015), 73.86 ± 5.94 vs 80.71 ± 4.81 for each group at 1-year follow up ( P < .001). Conclusions: Our study found that the sarcopenia showed lower BMD than the non-sarcopenia, but there was no significant difference of BMD change in the follow-up period. In addition, the sarcopenia showed poor functional results at all points except at the time of hospitalization.

Производство лиофилизированныхкомпонентов плазмы крови требует сведения к минимуму риска контаминации микроорганизмами, аэрозольными частицами и пирогенами. Отсутствие конечной стадии стерилизации лиофилизированных компонентов плазмы крови увеличивает риски контаминации готовой продукции и повышает потенциальную значимость концентрации аэрозольных частиц размером 0,5 и 5,0 мкм, которые могут сорбировать на своей поверхности микроорганизмы. Цель. Выявить влияние комплекса противомикробных мероприятий на содержание аэрозольных частиц размером 0,5 и 5,0 мкм и результаты микробиологического испытания воздушной среды производственных помещений группы лиофилизации отдела промышленного производства лекарственных средств РНПЦ трансфузиологии и медицинских биотехнологий. Материалы и методы. Материалом служили результаты микробиологического мониторинга и оценки содержания аэрозольных частиц размером 0,5 и 5,0 мкм в 1 м3 воздуха производственной среды группы лиофилизации отдела промышленного производства лекарственных средств за 2020–2022 гг., а также результаты оценки риска бактериальной контаминации криопреципитата лиофилизированного за аналогичный период. Результаты. Установлено, что в результате проведенного комплекса корректирующих мероприятий было получено улучшение отдельных контролируемых показателей воздушной среды: количество превышений концентрации аэрозольных частиц размером 0,5 мкм снизилось с 70% в 2020 г. до 37% в 2022 г., уменьшилось количество превышений значений приемлемых величин уровня микробной контаминации воздушной среды с 5% в 2020 г. до 0 в 2022 г. В 2022 г. не было забраковано ни одной серии криопреципитата лиофилизированного в сравнении с 2020 г. и 2021 г. Комплекс проводимых мероприятий не оказал существенного влияния на количество частиц размером 5,0 мкм в 1 м3 воздуха. Заключение. Обеспечение должного уровня бактериальной безопасности лиофилизированных компонентов плазмы крови требует разработки комплекса мероприятий, учитывающего особенности производственного процесса, и не исключает необходимости мониторинга концентрации аэрозольных частиц размером 0,5 и 5,0 мкм. The production of lyophilized blood plasma components requires minimizing the risk of contamination by microorganisms, aerosol particles and pyrogens. The absence of the final stage of sterilization of lyophilized blood plasma components increases the risks of contamination of the finished product and increases the potential significance of the concentration of aerosol particles of 0.5 and 5.0 microns in size, which can adsorb microorganisms on their surface. Purpose. To reveal the effect of a complex of antimicrobial measures on the content of aerosol particles with a size of 0.5 and 5.0 μm and the results of microbiological tests of the air environment of the industrial premises of the lyophilization group of the department of industrial production of medicines of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Transfusiology and Medical Biotechnologies. Materials and methods. The material was the results of microbiological monitoring and assessment of the content of aerosol particles of 0.5 and 5.0 μm in 1 m3 of air in the production environment of the lyophilization group of the industrial production of medicines department for 2020–2022, as well as the results of assessing the risk of bacterial contamination of lyophilized cryoprecipitate for the same period. Results. It was found that as a result of the complex of corrective measures taken, an improvement in certain controlled indicators of the air environment was obtained: the number of exceedances of the concentration of aerosol particles with a size of 0.5 microns decreased from 70% in 2020 to 37% in 2022, decreased the number of exceedances of acceptable level values air microbial contamination from 5% in 2020 to 0 in 2022. In 2022, not a single batch of freeze-dried cryoprecipitate was rejected in comparison with 2020 and 2021. The set of measures taken did not have a significant impact on the number of particles with a size of 5.0 microns in 1 m3 of air. Conclusions. To ensure a sufficient level of bacterial safety of lyophilized blood plasma components, it is necessary to develop a set of measures that take into account the specifics of the production process and does not exclude the need to monitor the concentration of aerosol particles with a size of both 0.5 and 5.0 microns.

Zat goniotalamin pada tanaman gajah beranak (Goniothalamus tapis) merupakan obat alternatif penyembuhan kanker. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mendapatkan zat goniotalamin melalui kultur kalus dan kultur suspensi sel. Metode penelitian eksperimen Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan kombinasi 2,4-D (1-10 mgL-1) dan BAP (0,5-2 mgL-1) menggunakan eksplan batang muda, terdiri dari 17 perlakuan dan 3 kali ulangan. Analisis data menggunakan Analysis of Variances dan uji lanjut Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) taraf 5%. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa kultur kalus G. tapis pada media 5,0 mg L-1 2,4-D + 1 mg L-1 BAP adalah yang terbaik dengan waktu muncul kalus 28,33 hari dan persentase pembentukan kalus 100%. Kalus untuk kultur suspensi sel bertekstur remah dan berwarna kuning kehijauan. Kultur suspensi sel menghasilkan pertumbuhan sel yang cepat, tidak lembek berair dan mudah dipisahkan. Hasil kualitatif Kromatografi Lapis Tipis kultur suspensi sel sangat jelas, bersih dan terdapat potensi kandungan zat goniotalamin pada perlakuan 2,4-D 5 mg L-1 + BAP 0,5 mg L-1, 2,4-D 5 mg L-1 + BAP 1 mg L-1, 2,4-D 5 mg L-1 + BAP 2 mg L-1, 2,4-D 10 mg L-1 + BAP 0,5 mg L-1 dan 2,4-D 10 mg L-1 + BAP 1 mg L-1. Hasil kuantitatif zat goniotalamin dengan Kromatografi Cair Prestasi Tinggi terdapat pada perlakuan 2,4-D 5,0 mgL-1 + BAP 1 mg L-1 yaitu 9,57 mg g-1.The goniothalamine compound on Goniothalamus tapis is an alternative cancer medicine. This study aimed to obtain gonotalamin through callus culture and suspension cell culture. The experiment research method was Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with a combination of 2.4-D (1-10 mg L-1) and BAP (0.5-2 mg L-1) using young stem explants consisting of 17 treatments with 3 replications. Data analysis used ANOVA and DMRT at 5%. The results showed that G. tapis callus culture on 5.0 mg L-1 2.4-D + 1 mg L-1 BAP was the best treatment medium with callus emergence time of 28.33 days and percentage of callus formation 100%. The callus used for suspension cell culture was friable and greenish-yellow in color. Suspension cell culture resulted in rapid cell growth, was not fleshy, and easily separated. The quality test by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) from suspension cell culture resulted very clear, clean, and potential content of goniothalamin found in treatments 2.4-D 5.0 mg L-1 + BAP 0.5 mg L-1, 2.4-D 5.0 mg L-1 + BAP 1 mg L-1, 2.4-D 5.0 mg L-1 + BAP 2 mg L-1, 2.4-D 10 mg L-1 + BAP 0.5 mg-1 and 2.4-D 10 mg-1 + BAP 1 mg-1. The quantitative results of the best goniotalamine compounds in cell suspension cultures using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) on medium 2,4-D 5.0 mgL-1 + BAP 1 mg L-1 ie 9.57 g-1.

Stress factors, infections, tumor transformation of the cells of organism induce the expression of MICA protein, which is a ligand for the NKG2D receptor of NK and T cells. The interaction of the NKG2D receptor on the surface of the cells of the immune system with MICA results in activation of lymphocytes and elimination of the ligand carrier. The MICA gene has a high level of polymorphism. To date, 87 alleles have been described; their products differ in ability to activate cytotoxic lymphocytes, that can affect the progression of a number of diseases, such as cancer, viral infections, autoimmune diseases. The distribution of MICA alleles in different ethnic groups varies considerably. The analysis of MICA polymorphism in a current ethnos is necessary for revealing the relationships between certain MICA alleles and different diseases. Goal. This work is aimed at studying of the distribution of MICA alleles in Russian population. Materials and methods. Polymorphism of MICA was analyzed according to the procedure proposed by Yizhou Zoe and Peter Stastny. The procedure included: 1) isolation of genomic DNA from whole blood; 2) PCR for amplification of a fragment of the MICA gene; 3) sequencing of the resulting PCR fragments. Analysis of the results of sequencing was carried out using the programs Vector NTI and Chromas Lite. Results. The genotype of the MICA alleles of 119 donors has been determined. Of the 87 MICA alleles described in the literature, 15 were found among the samples studied. The frequencies of MICA alleles were the following: *002 – 19.3%, *004 – 6.7%, *007 – 3.0%, *008 – 35.7%, *009 – 10.1%, *010 – 5.0%, *011 – 3.8%, *012 – 2.1%, *016 – 2.5%, *017 – 3.4% *018 – 5.5%, *019 – 0.4%, *027 – 1.3%, *053 – 0.8%, *068 – 0.4%. The distribution of MICA alleles in Russia was found to be similar to that of European countries. When comparing literary data for different countries of the world, it was found that the differences in the distribution of MICA alleles are expressed mainly between races, and not nations. Conclusions. In this paper, the distribution of MICA alleles in Russian population has been analyzed. It turned out to be very similar to those of other European countries and has a number of significant differences from the ethnoses of the Mongoloid race (Japan, China, Korea). The analysis of the distribution of MICA alleles in the Russian population may be useful for identifying the predisposition of individuals to certain diseases.

ObjectiveTo assess the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid expansion’s impact on new hypertension and diabetes diagnoses in community health centres (CHCs).DesignRates of new hypertension and diabetes diagnoses were computed using generalised estimating equation Poisson models and we tested the difference-in-difference (DID) pre-ACA versus post-ACA in states that expanded Medicaid compared with those that did not.SettingWe used electronic health record data (pre-ACA: 1 January 2012–31 December 2013—post-ACA: 1 January 2014–31 December 2016) from the Accelerating Data Value Across a National Community Health Center Network clinical data network. We included clinics with ≥50 patients contributing to person-time-at risk in each study year.ParticipantsPatients aged 19–64 with ≥1 ambulatory visit in the study period were included. We then excluded patients who were pregnant during the study period (N=127 530). For the hypertension outcome, we excluded individuals with a diagnosis of hypertension prior to the start of the study period, those who had a hypertension diagnosis on their first visit to a clinic or their first visit after 3 years without a visit, and those who had a diagnosis more than 3 years after their last visit (pre-ACA non-expansion N=130 973; expansion N=193 198; post-ACA non-expansion N=186 341; expansion N=251 015). For the diabetes analysis, we excluded patients with a diabetes diagnosis prior to study start, on their first visit or first visit after inactive patient status, and diagnosis while not an active patient (pre-ACA non-expansion N=145 435; expansion N=198 558; post-ACA non-expansion N=215 039; expansion N=264 644).ResultsIn non-expansion states, adjusted hypertension diagnosis rates saw a relative decrease of 6%, while in expansion states, the adjusted rates saw a relative increase of 7% (DID 1.14, 95% CI 1.11 to 1.18). For diabetes diagnosis, adjusted rates in non-expansion states experienced a significant relative increase of 28% and in expansion states the relative increase was 25%; yet these differences were not significant pre-ACA to post-ACA comparing expansion and non-expansion states (DID 0.98, 95% CI 0.91 to 1.05).ConclusionThere was a differential impact of Medicaid expansion for hypertension and diabetes diagnoses. Moderate increases were found in diabetes diagnosis rates among all patients served by CHCs post-ACA (both in expansion and non-expansion states). These increases suggest that ACA-related opportunities to gain health insurance (such as marketplaces and the Medicaid expansion) may have facilitated access to diagnostic tests for this population. The study found a small change in hypertension diagnosis rates from pre-ACA to post-ACA (a decrease in non-expansion and an increase in expansion states). Despite the significant difference between expansion and non-expansion states, the small change from pre-ACA to post-ACA suggests that the diagnosis of hypertension is likely documented for patients, regardless of health insurance availability. Future studies are needed to understand the impact of the ACA on hypertension and diabetes treatment and control.

Pembenihan ikan kerapu dihadapkan pada rendahnya sintasan, terutama fase awal hidupnya. Rendahnya sintasan diduga berhubungan dengan belum berkembangnya organ pencernaan larva dan tidak tersedianya pakan yang siap diserap tubuh. Pemberian asam amino bebas seperti taurin dan glutamin melalui rotifer diharapkan dapat meningkatan ketersediaan nutrien yang dapat diserap dengan cepat oleh larva, sehingga sintasan larva tinggi dan dapat tumbuh lebih cepat. Penelitian bertujuan mengukur pengaruh glutamin atau taurin terhadap sintasan dan pertumbuhan larva kerapu bebek Cromileptes altivelis. Larva umur 1 hari (10 ekor.L-1) dipelihara dalam bak fiberglass volume 500 L yang diisi air laut sampai 330 L. Larva diberi pakan rotifer diperkaya 0,5 g glutamin, 0,5 g taurin, atau tanpa glutamin dan taurin. Larva dipelihara selama 16 hari dengan pemberian pakan 2 kali per hari. Satu jam setelah pemberian pakan dilakukan pengamatan terhadap jumlah rotifer dalam saluran pencernaan larva ikan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan jumlah rotifer dalam saluran pencernaan larva meningkat seiring dengan bertambahnya umur. Namun, jumlah rata-rata rotifer yang dikonsumsi larva pada perlakuan 0,5 g glutamin atau 0,5 g taurin lebih banyak dibanding perlakuan tanpa taurin dan glutamin. Larva yang diberi rotifer hasil pengkayaan dengan 0,5 g glutamin atau 0,5 g taurin memiliki sintasan yang tidak berbeda (P>0,05), masing-masing 19,2±2,25%, dan 24,5±1,20%, dan secara signifikan lebih banyak dibanding larva di perlakuan tanpa glutamin dan taurin yang nilainya 13,0±1,70%. Larva yang diberi rotifer hasil pengkayaan dengan 0,5 g taurin secara signifikan lebih panjang (5,5±0,18 mm) dari ikan di perlakuan 0,5 g glutamin (5,3±0,12 mm). Demikian juga, larva di perlakuan glutamin lebih panjang dari pelakuan tanpa glutamin dan taurin (5,0±0,16 mm). Pengkayaan rotifer menggunakan asam amino bebas taurin atau glutamin dapat meningkatkan sintasan dan pertumbuhan larva kerapu bebek. The hatchery production of grouper faced to the problem of low surival rate, especially during the first feeding period. During this period, the digestive organ of larvae was underdeveloped, and the nutrient in live food was not readily absorbed by larvae. Feeding on free amino acids, such as taurine or glutamine, enriched rotifer would be enhanced the nutrient readily absorbed thereby resulting to the improvement of growth and survival rate of larvae. A duplicate experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of rotifer enriched with free amino acid of glutamine or taurine, on the growth and survival rate of larval grouper Cromileptes altivelis. One day old larvae were cultured in 500 l fiberglass containing 330 l of sea water with a density of 10 ind.L-1. Larvae were fed on rotifer enriched with either 0.5 g glutamine, 0.5 g taurine, or without glutamine nor taurine. Larvae were fed on rotifer twice a day at 08.00 and 14.00, and cultured for 16 days. One h after feeding, rotifer content in the gut of larvae were observed. Results showed that larvae fed on rotifer enriched with 0.5 g taurine or 0.5 g glutamie had higher rotifer content in the gut than that in the other group. Larvae fed on rotifer enriched with 0.5 g glutamine or 0.5 g taurine had the same survival rate (P>0.05), 19.2±2.25% and 24.5±1.20%, respectively; these values were significantly higher than that in the other group which was 13.0±1.70%. The total length of larvae fed on rotifer enriched with 0.5 g taurine (5.5±0.18 mm) significantly was the biggest compared than others; while those fed on rotifer enriched with 0.5 g glutamine (5.3±0.12 mm) was bigger than fish fed on rotifer without glutamine nor taurine (5.0±0.16 mm). Thus, it can be concluded that survival rate and growth of larvae were improved when feeding on rotifer enriched with taurine or glutamine. Nevertheless, taurine was more efective than glutamine due to its effect resulted the highest growth performance of larval grouper. Keywords: taurine, glutamine, grouper, Cromileptes altivelis

In the Non-chernozem zone of Russia, the recurrent spring cold up to 1-2 C can cause damage and death of thermophilic amaranth seedlings. Pre-sowing treatment of seeds with growth regulators is an inexpensive and effective method to reduce the negative effect of hypothermia on seed germination. The aim of the research was to study the effect of low-temperature stress on etiolated and de-etiolated seedlings of amaranth cv. Valentina ( A. tricolor L.) grown from seeds treated with growth stimulants. Seeds were pretreated with aqueous solutions of Albit (1 g/L), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) - 5 mM and succinic acid (ScA) - 500 mg/L. Seeds were germinated in peat pots at 23 2 C (T23) for 7 days. On the 7th day, peat pots with seedlings grown in the light and in the dark were moved to thermostat at 2.0 0.5 C (T2) for 8 hours. Determination of the amount of amaranthine, chlorophylls and carotenoids were carried out according to generally accepted methods. Pretreatment of seeds with the growth regulators Albit, H2O2, and ScA increased hypocotyl length, root length, and biomass of light and etiolated seedlings. Low positive temperatures increased the content of amaranthine and carotenoids but reduced the content of chlorophylls. It was shown that all used growth regulators - H2O2, Albit and ScA trigger or at least maintain the system of antioxidant protection in light and etiolated seedlings of amaranth cv. Valentina under low positive temperatures.

Abstract (sommario):
In present study, a modification of the NiAl LDH composite with chitosan was successful. Characterization was carried out using X-rays, The results obtained show that there is an angle of 2θ at 11.57°(003); 22.91°(006); 35.04°(012); 39.73°(015); and 61.9°(110). The FT-IR spectrum of the Chitosan@NiAl LDH at Wavenumber 3448, 1635, 1543, and 601 cm−1. The NiAl LDH and chitosan have a surface area of 3.288 m2/g and 8.558 m2/g, respectively. An increase in the surface area of the composite Chitosan@NiAl LDH 9.493 m2/g, all of adsorbents follow type IV isotherm based on the classification according to IUPAC. The optimum pH of the NiAl LDH at pH 3. The optimum pH for chitosan and chitosan@NiAl LDH material is at the optimum pH of 5. The kinetic and isotherm model in the adsorption process is pseudo-second-order and Freundlich model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of NiAl LDH, chitosan, and chitosan@NiAl LDH is 25.445, 23.753, and 33.223 mg/g, respectively. The increase in regeneration cycles causes a decrease in the percentage of adsorbed; sequentially, the percentage adsorbed during the fifth regeneration reaches 3.545, 1.966, 4.309%, respectively.

Đặt vấn đề: Phẫu thuật tim nội soi ít xâm lấn đang dần trở thành xu hướng thay thế dần phẫu thuật mở xương ức với những kết quả tích cực, trong đó điều trị bệnh lý u nhầy nhĩ. Báo cáo của chúng tôi nhằm đưa ra kết quả ban đầu trong điều trị nội soi toàn bộ cắt bỏ khối u nhầy nhĩ phải. Đối tượng và phương pháp nghiên cứu: Mô tả, hồi cứu hồ sơ bệnh án. 5 bệnh nhân được chẩn đoán u nhầy nhĩ phải được phẫu thuật nội soi toàn bộ cắt khối u nhầy với tim đập trong thời gian từ tháng 3/2019 đến tháng 10/2020. Đánh giá qua các thông số thời gian mổ, thở máy, nằm hồi sức và hậu phẫu sau mổ. Kết quả: Tổng số 5 bệnh nhân ( 4 nữ; 1 nam). Tuổi trung bình 57± 6,92. Thời gian mổ 3,1± 0,5 giờ, chạy máy tim phổi nhân tạo 101,2 ± 32,8 phút, thời gian nằm hồi sức 40,4 ± 17,3 giờ, thời gian hậu phẫu 4,4 ± 1,7 ngày. Không có tử vong bệnh viện, không chảy máu sau mổ, không tai biến tắc mạch khí. Kết luận: Phẫu thuật nội soi toàn bộ cắt bỏ u nhầy nhĩ phải khả thi, có thể thực hiện được, nên được nghiên cứu và áp dụng.

Eco-labels and certification are one of the many environmental policy tools that have been under scrutiny in recent years. This is because the damages of environmental degradation are becoming more apparent over time. Hence there is a pressure to come up with tools that help solve even small parts of the problem. Eco-labels have been around for over 30 years. However the market, the environment and eco-labels have changed drastically during this period. Moreover, in the last 5 years there has been a sudden increase in eco-labels making them more visible in the market and to the average consumer. All this has made evident that little is known about the effectiveness of eco-labels as environmental policy tools. Hence, there is a call to find answers regarding the actual effects of eco-labels on the market and on the environment. While this work cannot address whether eco-labels have an environmental impact it addresses the effects of eco-labels on the markets. Moreover, this work aimed to find the role of law in eco-labelling. In addition, it aims to find a legal solution that would improve the performance of eco-labelling and certification.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis presents the result of a study, within the scope of the PLANETA experiment (an INFN research program), on the effect of nanostructures on laser-matter interaction. Specifically, the plasma created on targets containing metal nanowires when irradiated with a laser pulse 6 ns long, at 1064 and 532 nm wavelength, with a power density of about 1 · 1012 W/cm2 . Laser-produced plasma is of interest for a wide range of scientific and technological application, from using them as a source of X-rays to the possibility of nuclear fusion thanks to the high densities and temperatures which can be reached inside the plasma. However, most applications are constrained by the very limited penetration of laser energy into matter, due to the rapid formation of a reflective critical surface of dense plasma. PLANETA experiment was meant to investigate if targets with metal nanowires (thin cylinders with diameter < 100 nm, smaller than the laser’s wavelength) could lead to production of a hotter and/or longer lived plasma compared to bulk metal. The proposed mechanism would be a deeper penetration of laser light into the targets. This could lead to volumetric, instead of superficial heating, and thus to the production of a hotter and denser plasma compared to a bulk metal target. Targets were produced at the electron microscopy lab of INFN Bologna, with nanowires of different geometrical parameters and different metals. They were irradiated with a Nd-Yag laser at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud in Catania, and the resulting plasmas were observed with detectors of several kinds to compare them with plasmas from bulk metals. A different INFN facility at the Department of Physics, University of L’Aquila, equipped with a 532 nm wavelength laser was available to the PLANETA experiment.

In the era of Consumer Health Informatics, healthcare consumers and patients play an active role because they increasingly explore health related information sources on their own, and they become more responsible for their personal healthcare, trying to find information on the web, consulting decision-support healthcare systems, trying to interpret clinical notes or test results provided by their physician, or filling in parts of their own Personal Health Record (PHR). In spite of the advances in Healthcare Informatics for answering consumer needs, it is still difficult for laypersons who do not have a good level of healthcare literacy to find, understand, and act on health information, due to the communication gap which still persists between consumer and professional language (in terms of lexicon, semantics, and explanation). Significant effort has been devoted to promote access to and the integration of medical information, and many standard terminologies have been developed for this aim, some of which have been formalized into ontologies. Many of these terminological resources are used in healthcare information systems, but one of the most important problems is that these types of terminologies have been developed according to the physicians’perspective, and thus cannot provide sufficient support when integrated into consumer-oriented applications, such as Electronic Health Records, Personal Health Records, etc. This highlights the need for intermediate consumer-understandable terminologies or ontologies being integrated with more technical ones in order to support communication between patient-applications and those designed for experts. The aim of this thesis is to develop a lexical-ontological resource for consumer-oriented healthcare applications which is based on the construction of a Consumer-oriented Medical Vocabulary for Italian, able to reflect the different ways consumers and patients express and think about health topics, helping to bridge the vocabulary gap, integrated with standard medical terminologies/ontologies used by professionals in the general practice for representing the process of care, by means of Semantic Web technologies, in order to have a coherent semantic medical resource useful both for professionals and for consumers. The feasibility of this consumer-oriented resource and of the Integration Framework has been tested by its application to an Italian Personal Health Record in order to help consumers and patients in the process of querying healthcare information, and easily describe their problems, complaints and clinical history.

Abstract (sommario):
Neutron cross-section standards are fundamental ingredients for both measurements and evaluations of neutron-induced reaction cross sections. This is the case of 235U(n,f) cross section: one of the most important standard cross sections at thermal neutron energy and between 0.15 MeV and 200 MeV. Above 200 MeV this reaction plays an important role for several applications, from biological effectiveness, via nuclear astrophysics, to nuclear technology, as well as for fundamental nuclear physics. However, no measurement exists for energies above 200 MeV. This led to a request for new absolute measurements of 235U(n,f) cross section, in order to extend the precision and possibly to establish it as a standard up to 1 GeV. The n_TOF facility at CERN offers the possibility to study such reaction thanks to the wide neutron energy spectrum available in its experimental area, from thermal to 1 GeV. A dedicated measurement campaign was carried out to provide accurate and precise cross-section data of the 235U(n,f) reaction in the energy region from 10 MeV to 500 MeV. The experimental setup consisted of two chambers to detect the 235U fission events, while the neutron flux was simultaneously measured by exploiting the neutron-proton scattering process using three Proton Recoil Telescopes. In this PhD thesis the development, implementation and characterisation of the two telescopes under the responsibility of the INFN are discussed, as well as the analysis of the data acquired during the campaign. In this measurement, the n_TOF neutron flux in the energy interval between 10 and 500 MeV was measured for the first time. In addition, the analysis of one of the two chambers dedicated to the measurement of fission events is presented in detail. From these data, the 235U(n,f) cross section was determined and represents, at this time, the unique measure of this kind.

O evento é promovido pelo Instituto Internacional Despertando Vocações com o objetivo de promover e divulgar os trabalhos científicos desde 2019. No ano de 2020, tivemos o processo de seleção, realizado por avaliadores ad hoc, coordenados pela Comissão Científica e com a participação de membros do Conselho Editorial da Editora IIDV. A dinâmica de avaliação presencial dos trabalhos foi substituída pelas salas virtuais e a presencialidade, o compartilhamento de experiências, mesmo em um ano de dificuldades como 2020, foram preservados, na medida do possível. AbstractThe genetic improvement of C. arabica L. is challenged by its low genetic diversity and autogamous reproductive biology. Induced mutagenesis offers an alternative approach to conventional cross-breeding to increase genetic variability in wild and cultivated Arabica coffee germplasm for further use in breeding programs and genetic studies. Here protocols are described for the preparation of zygotic embryos from C. arabica seed and for toxicity testing of zygotic embryos using two chemical mutagens, sodium azide (NaN3) and ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS). Zygotic embryos were immersed for 10 min in a solution of NaN3 (0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 12.5, 15.0 and 20. 0 mM) and for 2 h in a solution of EMS (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 4 and 6 % v/v). The percentage survival was evaluated and the LD values for NaN3 and EMS were determined at 12.5 mM (51.6%) and 1 % v/v (48.3%), respectively. Our protocols indicate that coffee zygotic embryos are suitable propagules for NaN3 and EMS mutagenesis and expand the types of propagules suitable for induced mutagenesis, breeding and genetic studies in Arabica coffee.

Abstract Low genetic diversity and autogamous reproduction limit genetic improvement of Coffea arabica L. As a consequence, susceptibility to biotic and abiotic stresses increases. Induced mutagenesis is an alternative strategy for increasing genetic variability and for the development of varieties tolerant or resistant to biotic and abiotic factors. In the present study, the effect of three mutagenic agents (NaN3, EMS and 60Co gamma-rays) on survival of Arabica coffee zygotic embryos was evaluated. The zygotic embryos were immersed for 10 min in a solution of NaN3 (0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 12.5, 15.0 and 20.0 mM) or for 2 h in a solution of EMS (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 4 and 6% v/v) or irradiated with 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 or 100 Gy. As the concentration or dose of the applied mutagen increased, survival decreased. The LD50 values for sodium azide, EMS and 60Co were 12.5 mM (51.6%), 1% v/v (48.3%) and 40 Gy (50.0%), respectively. Our results indicated that coffee zygotic embryos are suitable for chemical and physical mutagenesis and this offers an alternative for the genetic improvement of agriculturally important traits in coffee.

For operation of existing nuclear power plants (NPPs) beyond their design lifetime (up to 80 years), one of th7e main issues is the assessment of the performance of its structures, systems and components (SSC) during the period of extended operation. The reactor pressure vessel (RPV) is one of the components that could determine the lifetime of a NPP. Neutron irradiation at the temperature of operation of the nuclear reactors facilitates the chemical equilibrium of the alloying elements of the RPV steels, especially copper, while producing nanoscale precipitates (Cu, Mn-Ni-Si, and ∼M6C carbides) that leads to embrittlement [1–4]; by the other side, neutron irradiation also produces dislocation loops. Both, nanoscale precipitates and dislocation loops, produce loss of toughness and hardness increase. One of the proposals to manage the RPV time life is the thermal annealing, however there are still some concerns about its application, one of them is a possible detrimental effect by the development of new microstructural features that could lead to thermal embrittlement. Thus it is important to have data about the microstructural and hardness evolution of the RPV steels submitted to thermal annealing treatments. The results of thermal treatments (450°C, 500°C and 550°C) performed in a A533 C1.1 (JRQ) steel during 0.5 to 1000 hours are presented in this work. JRQ steel has a bainitic microstructure, but well separated ferrite and bainite islands are observed at high magnification. The hardness evolution of such islands as a function of the thermal treatment is correlated with the number of precipitates present after thermal treatment as well as with the chemical evolution in these microconstituents. Thermal treatments of JRQ steel at 450, 500 and 550°C promoted the increase of hardness in both, bainite and ferrite. For the thermal treatment at 550°C, it is observed a maximum of the number of precipitates per μm2 in the treatments during 500 hours, which coincides with the depletion of the alloying elements in the bainite matrix and a decrease of Vickers microhardness (HV) in bainite. Cooper rich nanoprecipitates have been observed in the samples treated at 550°C during 500 and 1000 hours. The Cu content in the nanoprecipitates increase according the ageing time.

We have shown that gain of a dye laser amplifier depends on the wavelength of the probe pulse. The probe pulse for our experiment was obtained from a rhodamine (Rh) 590 coaxial dye laser. The input energy to the amplifier was 5 μJ and the pulse width of the coaxial laser was 0.5 μs. The amplifier stage consisted of a quartz planar waveguide cell, pumped by a standard flashlamp arrangement. The solution used in the amplifier stage was Rh 590 and MeOH at a concentration of 1 × 10−3 M/liter and cyclooctateyraene at a concentration of 0.1 M/liter. The flashlamp used in the amplifier stage had a 7-mm bore diam and had electrical connections to a 2-μF capacitor. The pulse width of the flashlamp used to achieve gain was 5 μs. Flashlamp intensity was calculated within a 510–550-nm wavelength region and ranged from 175 to 675 W/cm2. The wavelength range of the probe pulse was 570–605 nm and the bandwidth of the tuned pulse was 5 nm. Because of the overlapping of the absorption and fluorescence spectra of Rh the best results occurred when the coaxial laser was tuned past the long-wavelength edge of the absorption band of Rh 590. Gain was less than one for peak wavelengths of probe pulses in the 570–580-nm range and approached two for peak wavelengths of 590–605 nm.

The generation of intense electron beams by superposing two discharges has been reported, recently /1/, /2/. A new device which delivers a 0.2 - 0.5 m length high intensity electron beam in low pressure (0.1 - 3 mbar) argon discharge tubes is presented. A common K1K2 hollow cathode serves both as a pulsed discharge cathode and a d.c. discharge cathode. A1 and A2 are the main discharge and the d.c. discharge anodes, respectively. A stable electron beam is developing longitudinally, centered inside the tube, only for critical values of the auxiliary discharge current, for a given gas pressure. A 2 mm diameter plasma channel which is produced by the electron beam itself is surrounding the electron beam. A pulsed high voltage supply (60 kV ,100 ns, 500 A) and a continuous 6kV/200 mA power supply are used. The temporal behaviour of the electron beam was determined by means of a Faraday cup and a 500 Mhz Tektronix 540 oscilloscope. Less than 4 ns FWHM beam intensity was found. The power density of the electron beam is estimated to be about 3. 1010 W / cm2.

In the present paper, the effects of deformation temperature on phase transformations behavior of the steel BR1500HS during isothermal and non-isothermal deformations are described and discussed. Thermal mechanical simulation tests were carried out on GLEEBLE 1500 thermal simulator, Some specimens are uniaxially extended with strain rate 10/s and their largest deforming degree reaches 15% at 950°C. After deformation, the specimens are cooled to room temperature at different cooling rates, 0.5, 1, 5, 10, 20, 30°C/s, respectively. And the others are nonisothermal uniaxially extended with strain rate 10/s with strain value 15% from the initial deformation temperature of 800°C, and simultaneously cooled to different temperature, 400, 450, 500, 550, 600, 650 and 700°C, respectively. The isothermal deforming microstructures of steel BR1500HS are mainly composed of ferrite and pearlite at a cooling rate range of 0.5 to 1°C/s. When the cooling rate gets to 5°C/s, the microstructures are mainly bainite and some martensite. And the cooling rate is higher than 30°C/s, fully martensitic transformation are accomplished in the experimental steel. The non-isothermal deforming microstructures, however, no martensite phase can be seen. Even the amount of bainite phase is minimal, too.

By harmonically modelocking a Nd:YAG laser 31 ps pulses at 0.5 GHz repetition rate have been obtained.1 By using YLF, shorter pulses, 9.1 ps, at 0.5 GHz repetition rate have been achieved. Nd:Glass has a much wider bandwidth and potentially can achieve a shorter pulsewidth. Our group had achieved a pulsewidth less than 10 ps at a repetition rate of 100 MHz. With further compression, the pulses have been shortened to 30 fs.2 In this work, we have investigated the modelocking of a Nd:phosphate glass laser using high frequency gallium-phosphate (GaP) acousto-optic modulators (AOMs). We have characterized four different acousto-optic modulators. The single pass insertion losses of the four tested modulators ranges from 5% to 13%. The modulation depths of these AOMs with 0.3 W rf power are about 25%. The modulation depth and dynamic loss increase with increasing driving rf power and decrease with increasing frequency. We have achieved modelocking of a short cavity (26 cm long) cw Nd:phosphate laser at 500 MHz repetition rate with the average output power of 20 mW, generating 10 ps pulses at 1.054 µm.

Techniques for fabrication of large, uniform arrays of semiconductor structures with nanometer-scale dimensions are of great interest for investigating quantum size effects. We report on a simple technique for fabricating arrays of Si wires with transverse dimensions ≤ 10 nm. This technique takes advantage of the capabilities of optical interferometric lithography to produce very high spatial frequency gratings and the strongly directional KOH etching of Si. A <110> Si wafer is prepared with thin (50-nm) Si3N4 and standard photoresist (0.15 mm) layers. A submicrometer period grating is interferometrically exposed in the photoresist (0.2-1 mm pitch) by using a cw Ar-ion laser source (361 or 488 nm). Following resist development, the grating pattern is transferred into the Si3N4 by CF4 plasma etching. Large area patterns with ~500-1000 nm lines are readily produced. For lines aligned in the <110> direction, a 40% KOH solution provides a highly selective (500:1) wet etch that produces very high aspect ratio Si lines. The etch selectivity also serves to reduce any nonuniformities or edge roughness induced in the lithography and etching steps. At this stage, Si structures with widths of 30-100 nm and depths of 0.5- 1 mm are obtained. Finally, a controlled dry oxidation (~800°C) is used to further reduce the Si dimensions. Large areas of uniform nanometer scale structures, including Si wires isolated by SiO2 from the substrate, are produced. Photoluminescence and Raman scattering studies will be presented.

Numerical vector aggregation has numerous applications in privacy-sensitive scenarios, such as distributed gradient estimation in federated learning, and statistical analysis on key-value data. Within the framework of local differential privacy, this work gives tight minimax error bounds of O(d s/(n epsilon^2)), where d is the dimension of the numerical vector and s is the number of non-zero entries. An attainable mechanism is then designed to improve from existing approaches suffering error rate of O(d^2/(n epsilon^2)) or O(d s^2/(n epsilon^2)). To break the error barrier in the local privacy, this work further consider privacy amplification in the shuffle model with anonymous channels, and shows the mechanism satisfies centralized (14 ln(2/delta) (s e^epsilon+2s-1)/(n-1))^0.5, delta)-differential privacy, which is domain independent and thus scales to federated learning of large models. We experimentally validate and compare it with existing approaches, and demonstrate its significant error reduction.

Abstract (sommario):
The high-affinity heparin pentasaccharide (H5) and an 8000 Mr high-affinity heparin (H26) have been compared with respect to their interaction with antithrombin III (AT) and their accelerating effect on AT inhibition of thrombin (T) and factor Xa by rapid kinetic and equilibrium binding studies at pH 7.4, 25°C. Kds of .068 μM at I 0.15 and 0.57 μM at I 0.3 were determined for tne AT-H5 interaction, which were 5 and 2.5-fold weaker, respectively, than affinities determined for H26. Comparison of the kinetics of binding of H5 and H26 to AT at I 0.15 under pseudofirst order conditions ([H]o>> [AT]o) demonstrated a saturable dependence of the observed rate constant for both reaction with indistinguishable limiting rate constants of 700 +/-120 s-1 and 520 +/-90 s-1 , but somewhat different Kds for the initial binding interaction of 20 and 29 μM for H5 and H26, respectively. These results indicate that H5 induces the same conformational change in AT as the larger heparin, but that the rate of reversal of this conformational change is greater for H5 which is the basis for its weaker AT affinity. Bimolecular rate constants for neutralization of factor Xa and thrombin by AT-H5 and AT-H26 complexes were determined by p-aminobenzamidine displacement under pseudo-first order conditions([AT-H] >> [T]o or [Xa]o). I-in-dependent values of .62 μM-1 s-1 were obtained for Xa inhibition by AT-H5 at I 0.15 and 0.3, compared to I-dependent values of 1.4 and 0.91 μM-1 s-1 for AT-H26. For thrombin inhibition by AT-H5, and I-independent enhancement of 1.6-fold in the bimolecular rate constant from .0098 to .016 μM-1 s-1 was observed, in sharp contrast to the marked I-independent enhancement by AT-H26 of the bimolecular rate constant ranging from 4000 to 200-fold at I 0.15 and 0.3, respectively. These results are consistent with a primary ionic strength-independent contribution of the AT conformational change to heparin enhancement of factor Xa but not thrombin neutralization by AT, with an ionic strength-dependent component for both reactions, compatible with a differential role for a protease-heparin interaction. In this work, the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA) equation for prediction of hoop stress in a buried pipeline was validated using the Milestone 1 experimental data. The Milestone 1 testing program included a 24-inch outside diameter (OD), 0.25-inch wall thickness (WT) pipe specimen in sand (24-inch Sand); a 12.75-inch OD, 0.5-inch WT pipe specimen in clay (12-inch Packed Clay); and a 24-inch OD, 0.25-inch WT pipe specimen in clay (24-inch Dumped Clay). Two different depths of cover (DOC) values of 2 and 3 feet were used in the testing and the test specimens were crossed by a variety of construction equipment, namely a dump truck, a bulldozer, a front loader, and a vibratory compactor. The testing was conducted at internal pipe pressures of zero, 550 and 750 psig.

Havet är inte bara viktigt för de organismer som lever i eller av det, utan står även för betydande ekonomiska värden. I denna rapport beskrivs Statistikmyndigheten SCB:s ekonomiska statistik från 2014–2020 för svenska näringar som är beroende av havet. Här beskrivs även värdet av nyttor kopplade till rekreation vid kusten, samt fiske. Dessutom beskrivs det totala ekonomiska värdet under förutsättning att God Miljöstatus skulle nås år 2040 i svenska vatten. Nettoomsättningen inom den maritima sektorn har ökade under sjuårsperioden 2014–2020. Det årliga genomsnittet av nettoomsättningen av de marina näringarna var 106 miljarder kronor, förädlingsvärdet 31 miljarder kronor och exporten 12 miljarder kronor. Nettoomsättningen av de maritima näringarna motsvarade cirka 2,1 procent, förädlingsvärdet cirka 0,6 procent, och exporten cirka 0,3 procent av Sveriges bruttonationalprodukt 2019 och 2020. I genomsnitt utgjorde transportsegmentet den största andelen av de maritima näringarna både avseende den totala nettoomsättningen och förädlingsvärdet, medan exporten dominerades av segmentet ”teknik och produktion”. Antal gästnätter i besöksanläggningar i kustområdet i hela riket ökade under sjuårsperioden 2014–2020. Störst antal gästnätter rapporterades från Egentliga Östersjön. Det kommersiella fisket ökade i landningsvärde 2014–2020, men antalet anställda i branschen minskade. Under samma period har det inte skett mer fritidsfiske, men kostnaderna har ökat. Betalningsviljan för att uppnå God Miljöstatus i svenska vatten har i tidigare studier skattats till 8,2 miljarder kronor. Medianvärdet för betalningsvilja var 500 kr per person och år, och medelvärdet var 1 075 kr per person och år.

L⁻¹ florpyrauxifen-benzyl and exposed for 12, 24, or 48 hr under outdoor mesocosm conditions was reduced in biomass by 30-75% at 8 weeks after treatment (WAT). An additional hydrilla trial at the same herbicide concentrations, but under longer exposures (24, 72, or 168 hr), resulted in 33–85% plant control. Under indoor conditions, hybrid watermilfoil dry weight decreased 98–100% with subsurface applications of florpyrauxifen-benzyl under CET scenarios of 3–12 μg a.i. L⁻¹ at 3–24 hr exposure times in a growth chamber trial. Under shorter exposure periods (0.5–4 hr) in a follow-up trial, low doses (3–9 μg a.i. L⁻¹) achieved 50–100% control of hybrid watermilfoil. In the same trial, the nontarget species water stargrass and elodea proved relatively tolerant to the florpyrauxifen-benzyl at doses up to 6 μg a.i. L⁻¹ (4 hr exposure) and 9 μg a.i. L⁻¹ (1 hr exposure). These small-scale trials demonstrate florpyrauxifen-benzyl’s potential to selectively manage invasive species.

Large-scale cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) in Lake Okeechobee, Florida, and connected waterways routinely impair water resources. This study conducted a field demonstration of a peroxide-based algaecide in 2020 in the Pahokee Marina on Lake Okeechobee to evaluate the algaecide’s suitability for near-future operational implementation. Within minutes of treatment, rapid oxidation of cHAB cells occurred in the form of bleaching and cell lysis. On average, levels in the treatment area decreased by 4 hours after treatment (HAT) and remained low out to 24 HAT: chlorophyll decreased 87%, phycocyanin decreased 85%, total microcystin levels decreased from 50 μg L−1 to 4 μg L⁻¹ at 4 HAT and then increased to 11 μg L⁻¹ by 24 HAT, hydrogen peroxide concentrations averaged 6.1 mg L⁻¹ 0.5 HAT and then dropped below detection limits by 24 HAT, and Microcystis spp. cell densities decreased at 4 HAT in all but four sampling sites. However, inflows of cHAB-infested lake water in some portions of the treatment area resulted in lack of control at these sites. Because of their vulnerability to influxes of cHABs from surrounding nontreated waters via water-exchange processes driven by wind-induced surface currents, future applications must therefore consider treatment area size.

A vegetation classi?cation and map for Guadalupe Mountains National Park (NP) is presented as part of the National Park Service Inventory & Monitoring - Vegetation Inventory Program to classify, describe, and map vegetation communities in more than 280 national park units across the United States. Guadalupe Mountains NP lies in far west Texas and contains the highest point in the state, Guadalupe Peak (8,751 ft; 2,667 m). The mountain escarpments descend some 5,000 ft (1,500 m) to the desert basins below forming a complex geologic landscape that supports vegetation communities ranging from montane coniferous forests down to desert grasslands and scrub. Following the US National Vegetation Classi?cation (USNVC) standard, we identi?ed 129 plant associations hierarchically tiered under 29 groups and 17 macrogroups, making it one of the most ecologically diverse National Park Service units in the southwestern United States. An aspect that adds to this diversity is that the park supports communities that extend southward from the Rocky Mountains (?ve macrogroups) and Great Plains (one macrogroup) and northward from the Chihuahuan Desert (two macrogroups) and Sierra Madre Orientale of Mexico (three macrogroups). The remaining six macrogroups are found in the Great Basin (one macrogroup), and throughout the southwestern United States (remaining ?ve macrogroups). Embedded in this matrix are gypsum dunelands and riparian zones and wetlands that add further complexity. We describe in detail this vegetation classi?cation, which is based on 540 vegetation plots collected between 2006 and 2010. Full descriptions and diagnostic keys to the plant associations along with an overall plant species list are provided as appendices. Based on the vegetation classi?cation and associated plot data, the vegetation map was developed using a combined strategy of automated digital object-oriented image classi?cation and direct-analog image interpretation of four-band National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) aerial photography from 2004 and 2008 and Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite imagery. The map is designed to facilitate ecologically-based natural resource management at a 1:24,000 scale with 0.5-ha minimum map unit size. The map legend is hierarchically structured: the upper Level 1 consists of 16 map units corresponding in most cases to the USNVC group level, and an additional map unit describing built-up land and agriculture; Level 2 is composed of 48 nested map units re?ecting various combinations of plant associations. A ?eld-based accuracy assessment using 341 vegetation plots revealed a Level 1 overall accuracy of 79% with 90% CI of 74?84% and 68% with 90% CI of 59?76% at Level 2. An annotated legend with summary descriptions of the units, distribution maps, aerial photo examples of map unit polygons, and representative photos are provided in Appendix D. Large wall-size poster maps at 1:35,000 scale were also produced following NPS cartographic standards. Outcomes from this project provide the most detailed vegetation classi?cation and highest resolution mapping for Guadalupe Mountains NP to date to support many uses including ?re, recreation, vegetation, and wildlife management, among others. The upper Level 1 map is particularly suited to landscape-scale, park-wide planning and linkages to its sister park, Carlsbad Caverns NP. The Level 2 mapping provides added detail for use at a more localized project scale. The overall accuracy of the maps was good, but because Guadalupe Mountains NP is primarily wilderness park, there were logistical challenges to map development and testing in remote areas that should be considered in planning management actions. In this context, some map units would bene?t from further development and accuracy assessment. In particular, a higher resolution mapping of McKittrick Creek riparian habitat at 1:6,000 scale or ?ner is recommended for this important habitat in the park. In addition, developing a structural canopy height model from LiDAR imagery would be useful to more accurately quantify woody canopy density and height to support ?re management and other habitat management issues. With respect to understanding vegetation dynamics in this time of rapid environmental change, the 540 vegetation plots themselves are su?ciently georeferenced and have the data resolution to be useful in detecting change at the decadal scales across much of the park. To this end, an additional recommendation would be to install more plots to ?ll the gaps among the main vegetation units of the park, both spatially and thematically. Overall, the Vegetation and Classi?cation Map for Guadalupe Mountains NP will support the park?s management e?orts and enhance regional understanding of vegetation and ecology of ecosystems of the southwestern United States.

The objectives of this research are to figure out how solid state decouplers (SSDs) influence the surveys related to pipeline cathodic protection (CP) and provide corresponding field guidelines on how to mitigate the adverse effects of SSDs. Firstly, by combining the classical capacitor discharge theory and the equivalent circuit of the CP system, a four-stage physical model is built to explain how SSDs' discharge current pulse influences the CP related readings. From the physical model, we can obtain the following conclusions: (1) The driving force behind the discharging of an SSD's capacitor, after CP currents are cut off, is the voltage drop in the pipeline; (2)There are two contributors to the CP instant-off potential spikes: self-induced pipeline current and SSD discharge current; (3) The time constant ( and tau;=RC) of an SSD installation determines how fast the SSD finishes its discharging process; (4) The adverse effects of SSDs can be mitigated by making the SSD discharge time constant and tau; small enough (3 and tau; Before performing numerical modeling, some commonly used SSDs are tested for their capacitances in the lab according to the classical capacitor impedance theory. The test results show that the typical SSD capacitance is between 0.15 F and 0.36 F. The target pipeline for numerical modeling is a 50 km pipeline with different levels of coating quality, SSD grounding resistance, and SSD capacitance. An equivalent circuit model with ten parallel branches is built accordingly, and solved by an open-source electrical circuit software module. The numerical modeling results firmly support the primary conclusions drawn from the four-stage physical model. Moreover, the parallel analog circuit tests in the lab further prove the rationality of the four-stage model. Finally, comprehensive field tests are performed to study how SSDs influence the CP install-off potential survey, close interval potential survey, direct current voltage gradient, and alternating current voltage gradient. Practical field guidelines on how to mitigate SSDs' influence are proposed.

On April 19, 2019, one male career Fire Captain, one male career Fire Engineer, and two male career Firefighters received serious injuries as a result of cascading thermal runaway within a 2.16 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system (ESS) that led to a deflagration event. The smoke detector in the ESS signaled an alarm condition at approximately 16:55 hours and discharged a total flooding clean agent suppressant (Novec 1230). The injured firefighters were members of a hazardous materials (HAZMAT) team that arrived on the scene at approximately 18:28 hours. The HAZMAT team noted low-lying white clouds of a gas/vapor mixture issuing from the structure and nearby components and drifting through the desert. The team defined a hot zone and made several entries into the hot zone to conduct 360-degree size-ups around the ESS using multi-gas meters, colorimetric tubes, and thermal imaging cameras (TICs). The team detected dangerously elevated levels of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and carbon monoxide (CO) during each entry. The team continued to monitor the ESS and noted the white gas/vapor mixture stopped flowing out of the container at approximately 19:50 hours. The HAZMAT leadership developed an incident action plan with input from a group of senior fire officers and information about the ESS provided by representatives from the companies that owned, designed, and maintained the ESS. The HAZMAT team made a final entry into the hot zone and found that HCN and CO concentrations in the vicinity of the ESS were below an acceptable threshold. In following with the incident action plan, the team opened the door to the ESS at approximately 20:01 hours. A deflagration event was observed by the firefighters outside the hot zone at approximately 20:04 hours. All HAZMAT team members received serious injuries in the deflagration and were quickly transported to nearby hospitals. Note: The lithium-ion battery ESS involved in this incident was commissioned prior to release of a first draft of the current consensus standard on ESS installations, NFPA 855 [1]; the design of the ESS complied with the pertinent codes and standards active at the time of its commissioning.

Description: Shipping is responsible for a range of different pressures affecting air quality, climate, and the marine environment. Most social and economic analyses of shipping have focused on air pollution assessment and how shipping may impact climate change and human health. This risks that policies may be biased towards air pollution and climate change, whilst impacts on the marine environment are not as well known. One example is the sulfur regulation introduced in January 2020, which requires shipowners to use a compliant fuel with a sulfur content of 0.5% (0.1% in SECA regions) or use alternative compliance options (Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems, EGCS) that are effective in reducing sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions to the atmosphere. The EGCS cleaning process results in large volumes of discharged water that includes a wide range of contaminants. Although regulations target SOx removal, other pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), metals and combustion particles are removed from the exhaust to the wash water and subsequently discharged to the marine environment. Based on dilution series of the Whole Effluent Testing (WET), the impact of the EGCS effluent on marine invertebrate species and on phytoplankton was found to vary between taxonomic groups, and between different stages of the invertebrate life cycle. Invertebrates were more affected than phytoplankton, and the most sensitive endpoint detected in the present project was the fertilisation of sea urchin eggs, which were negatively affected at a sample dilution of 1 : 1,000,000. Dilutions of 1: 100,000 were harmful to early development of several of the tested species, including mussels, polychaetes, and crustaceans. The observed effects at these low concentrations of EGCS effluent were reduced egg production, and deformations and abnormal development of the larvae of the species. The ecotoxicological data produced in the EMERGE project were used to derive Predicted No Effect Concentration values. Corresponding modelling studies revealed that the EGCS effluent can be considered as a single entity for 2-10 days from the time of discharge, depending on the environmental conditions like sea currents, winds, and temperature. Area 10-30 km outside the shipping lanes will be prone to contaminant concentrations corresponding to 1 : 1,000,000 dilution which was deemed harmful for most sensitive endpoints of WET experiments. Studies for the Saronikos Gulf (Aegean Sea) revealed that the EGCS effluent dilution rate exceeded the 1 : 1,000,000 ratio 70% of the time at a distance of about 10 km from the port. This was also observed for 15% of the time within a band of 10 km wide along the shipping lane extending 500 km away from the port of Piraeus. When mortality of adult specimens of one of the species (copepod Acartia tonsa) was used as an endpoint it was found to be 3-4 orders of magnitude less sensitive to EGCS effluent than early life stage endpoints like fertilisation of eggs and larval development. Mortality of Acartia tonsa is commonly used in standard protocols for ecotoxicological studies, but our data hence shows that it seriously underestimates the ecologically relevant toxicity of the effluent. The same is true for two other commonly used and recommended endpoints, phytoplankton growth and inhibition of bioluminescence in marine bacteria. Significant toxic effects were reached only after addition of 20-40% effluent. A marine environmental risk assessment was performed for the Öresund region for baseline year 2018, where Predicted Environmental Concentrations (PECs) of open loop effluent discharge water were compared to the PNEC value. The results showed modelled concentrations of open loop effluent in large areas to be two to three orders of magnitude higher than the derived PNEC value, yielding a Risk Characterisation Ratio of 500-5000, which indicates significant environmental risk. Further, it should be noted that between 2018-2022 the number of EGCS vessels more than quadrupled in the area from 178 to 781. In this work, the EGCS discharges of the fleet in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, the English Channel, and the Mediterranean Sea area were studied in detail. The assessments of impacts described in this document were performed using a baseline year 2018 and future scenarios. These were made for the year 2050, based on different projections of transport volumes, also considering the fuel efficiency requirements and ship size developments. From the eight scenarios developed, two extremes were chosen for impact studies which illustrate the differences between a very high EGCS usage and a future without the need for EGCS while still compliant to IMO initial GHG strategy. The scenario without EGCS leads to 50% reduction of GHG emissions using low sulfur fuels, LNG, and methanol. For the high EGCS adoption scenario in 2050, about a third of the fleet sailing the studied sea areas would use EGCS and effluent discharge volumes would be increased tenfold for the Baltic Sea and hundredfold for the Mediterranean Sea when compared to 2018 baseline discharges. Some of the tested species, mainly the copepods, have a central position in pelagic food webs as they feed on phytoplankton and are themselves the main staple food for most fish larvae and for some species of adult fish, e.g., herring. The direct effect of the EGSE on invertebrates will therefore have an important indirect effect on the fish feeding on them. Effects are greatest in and near shipping lanes. Many important shipping lanes run close to shore and archipelago areas, and this also puts the sensitive shallow water coastal ecosystems at risk. It should be noted that no studies on sub-lethal effects of early 19 life stages in fish were included in the EMERGE project, nor are there any available data on this in the scientific literature. The direct toxic effects on fish at the expected concentrations of EGCS effluent are therefore largely unknown. According to the regional modelling studies, some of the contaminants will end up in sediments along the coastlines and archipelagos. The documentation of the complex chemical composition of EGCS effluent is in sharp contrast to the present legislation on threshold levels for content in EGCS effluent discharged from ships, which includes but a few PAHs, pH, and turbidity. Traditional assessments of PAHs in environmental and marine samples focus only on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) list of 16 priority PAHs, which includes only parent PAHs. Considering the complex PAHs assemblages and the importance of other related compounds, it is important to extend the EPA list to include alkyl-PAHs to obtain a representative monitoring of EGCS effluent and to assess the impact of its discharges into the marine environment. An economic evaluation of the installation and operational costs of EGCS was conducted noting the historical fuel price differences of high and low sulfur fuels. Equipment types, installation dates and annual fuel consumption from global simulations indicated that 51% of the global EGCS fleet had already reached break-even by the end of 2022, resulting in a summarised profit of 4.7 billion €2019. Within five years after the initial installation, more than 95% of the ships with open loop EGCS reach break-even. The pollutant loads from shipping come both through atmospheric deposition and direct discharges. This underlines the need of minimising the release of contaminants by using fuels which reduce the air emissions of harmful components without creating new pollution loads through discharges. Continued use of EGCS and high sulfur fossil fuels will delay the transition to more sustainable options. The investments made on EGCS enable ships to continue using fossil fuels instead of transitioning away from them as soon as possible as agreed in the 2023 Dubai Climate Change conference. Continued carriage of residual fuels also increases the risk of dire environmental consequences whenever accidental releases of oil to the sea occur.

During the granting period, we performed the following projects: Firstly, we differentially measured glucan content in several pleurotus mushroom strains. Mushroom polysaccharides are edible polymers that have numerous reported biological functions; the most common effects are attributed to β-glucans. In recent years, it became apparent that the less abundant α-glucans also possess potent effects in various health conditions. In our first study, we explored several Pleurotus species for their total, β and α-glucan content. Pleurotuseryngii was found to have the highest total glucan concentrations and the highest α-glucans proportion. We also found that the stalks (stipe) of the fruit body contained higher glucan content then the caps (pileus). Since mushrooms respond markedly to changes in environmental and growth conditions, we developed cultivation methods aiming to increase the levels of α and β-glucans. Using olive mill solid waste (OMSW) from three-phase olive mills in the cultivation substrate. We were able to enrich the levels mainly of α-glucans. Maximal total glucan concentrations were enhanced up to twice when the growth substrate contained 80% of OMSW compared to no OMSW. Taking together this study demonstrate that Pleurotuseryngii can serve as a potential rich source of glucans for nutritional and medicinal applications and that glucan content in mushroom fruiting bodies can be further enriched by applying OMSW into the cultivation substrate. We then compared the immune-modulating activity of glucans extracted from P. ostreatus and P. eryngii on phagocytosis of peripheral blood neutrophils, and superoxide release from HL-60 cells. The results suggest that the anti-inflammatory properties of these glucans are partially mediated through modulation of neutrophileffector functions (P. eryngiiwas more effective). Additionally, both glucans dose-dependently competed for the anti-Dectin-1 and anti-CR3 antibody binding. We then tested the putative anti-inflammatory effects of the extracted glucans in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)–induced model in mice. The clinical symptoms of IBD were efficiently relieved by the treatment with two different doses of the glucan from both fungi. Glucan fractions, from either P. ostreatus or P. eryngii, markedly prevented TNF-α mediated inflammation in the DSS–induced inflamed intestine. These results suggest that there are variations in glucan preparations from different fungi in their anti-inflammatory ability. In our next study, we tested the effect of glucans on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of TNF-α. We demonstrated that glucan extracts are more effective than mill mushroom preparations. Additionally, the effectiveness of stalk-derived glucans were slightly more pronounced than of caps. Cap and stalk glucans from mill or isolated glucan competed dose-dependently with anti-Dectin-and anti-CR-3 antibodies, indicating that they contain β-glucans recognized by these receptors. Using the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-inflammatory bowel disease mice model, intestinal inflammatory response to the mill preparations was measured and compared to extracted glucan fractions from caps and stalks. We found that mill and glucan extracts were very effective in downregulatingIFN-γ and MIP-2 levels and that stalk-derived preparations were more effective than from caps. The tested glucans were equally effective in regulating the number of CD14/CD16 monocytes and upregulating the levels of fecal-released IgA to almost normal levels. In conclusion, the most effective glucans in ameliorating some IBD-inflammatory associated symptoms induced by DSS treatment in mice were glucan extracts prepared from the stalk of P. eryngii. These spatial distinctions may be helpful in selecting more effective specific anti-inflammatory mushrooms-derived glucans. We additionally tested the effect of glucans on lipopolysaccharide-induced production of TNF-α, which demonstrated stalk-derived glucans were more effective than of caps-derived glucans. Isolated glucans competed with anti-Dectin-1 and anti-CR3 antibodies, indicating that they contain β-glucans recognized by these receptors. In conclusion, the most effective glucans in ameliorating IBD-associated symptoms induced by DSS treatment in mice were glucan extracts prepared from the stalk of P. eryngii grown at higher concentrations of OMSW. We conclude that these stress-induced growing conditions may be helpful in selecting more effective glucans derived from edible mushrooms. Based on the findings that we could enhance glucan content in Pleurotuseryngii following cultivation of the mushrooms on a substrate containing different concentrations of olive mill solid waste (OMSW) and that these changes are directly related to the content of OMSW in the growing substrate we tested the extracted glucans in several models. Using dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)–inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) mice model, we measured the colonic inflammatory response to the different glucan preparations. We found that the histology damaging score (HDS) resulting from DSS treatment reach a value of 11.8 ± 2.3 were efficiently downregulated by treatment with the fungal extracted glucans, glucans extracted from stalks cultivated at 20% OMSWdownregulated to a HDS value of 6.4 ± 0.5 and at 80% OMSW showed the strongest effects (5.5 ± 0.6). Similar downregulatory effects were obtained for expression of various intestinal cytokines. All tested glucans were equally effective in regulating the number of CD14/CD16 monocytes from 18.2 ± 2.7 % for DSS to 6.4 ± 2.0 for DSS +glucans extracted from stalks cultivated at 50% OMSW. We finally tested glucans extracted from Pleurotuseryngii grown on a substrate containing increasing concentrations of olive mill solid waste (OMSW) contain greater glucan concentrations as a function of OMSW content. Treatment of rat Intestinal epithelial cells (IEC-6) transiently transfected with Nf-κB fused to luciferase demonstrated that glucans extracted from P. eryngii stalks grown on 80% OMSWdownregulatedTNF-α activation. Glucans from mushrooms grown on 80% OMSW exerted the most significant reducing activity of nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treated J774A.1 murine macrophages. The isolated glucans were tested in vivo using the Dextran Sodium Sulfate (DSS) induced colitis in C57Bl/6 mice and found to reduce the histology damaging score resulting from DSS treatment. Expression of various intestinal cytokines were efficiently downregulated by treatment with the fungal extracted glucans. We conclude that the stress-induced growing conditions exerted by OMSW induces production of more effective anti-inflammatory glucans in P. eryngii stalks.
