Abstract (sommario):
Brazilian economic reforms in 21st century have great importance for the international community, especially for other countries of the middle level of development. The authors believe that, in spite of all the difficulties and crises, Brazil has made a decisive step forward by reforming its social structure and retaining democracy. Social reforms (especially minimal wage) led to strengthening middle class, but also to elevating its social aspirations. At this dramatic junction the economic development of the country was aggravated by external shocks and unsuccessful budget policies. The complex interaction of social macroeconomic policies in Brazil with strong external shocks gives lessons to countries with similar characteristics. The pandemic and recession of 2020–2021 have made the path of development more complicated but there is room for optimism for Brazil in the long run.

Abstract (sommario):
The article deals with the historical paths of black ethnic-racial identity in Brazil. The text discusses the historical trajectory of the socio-racial relations of the black population in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries from the perspective of building a black identity. In the 19th century, the Afro-Brazilian population encountered obstacles in building its own identity. In the 20th century, there was a more accentuated struggle for the construction of a black identity. In that century, identities called Sociological Subject (HALL, 2006), Resistance and Project (CASTELLS, 1999) were configured. In the 21st century there are advances in the construction of this identity due to the previous historical struggles of the black generations. The study points out the Resistance and Project identity models. The investigation consists of a descriptive-analytical study on the types of identities that coexisted and coexist in the process of Afro-Brazilian identity construction - from the 19th to the 21st century in the perspectives of Hall (2006; 2011) and Castells (1999; 2002), Elias (1994; 2001) and Goffman (1999; 2004). The study concludes that in each historical moment the Afro-Brazilian population built a singularity of identity in the light of delimited theorists.

Abstract (sommario):
Brazil is a country with a large party of the population, including traditional communities, that use plants for medicinal purposes, however, the prospect of drugs derived from plants is still little explored. The present study aimed to carry out a systematic review of the literature, in an attempt to understand how studies involving ethnopharmacology have developed in Brazil during the 21st century. The Scielo and PubMed data bases were used, using the keywords “ethnopharmacology” and “Brazil”. In a total of 212 articles were selected and the highest number of publications in the years of, respectively: 2018 (9.43%), 2020 (8.96%) and 2014 (8.96%). Experimental studies (laboratory studies, such as phytochemicals and biological activity) accounted 41.98% of the total, followed by literature reviews (36.32%) and ethno-directed interviews (20.28%). The results showed that the most common types of studies were popular use and biological activity (33.96%), followed by studies of popular use, phytochemical composition and biological activity (21.70%) and ethno-directed survey (20.75%). The most cited botanical families were Fabaceae (8.49%), Asteraceae (5.19%) and Lamiaceae (2.83%) and the main biological activities evaluated were anti-inflammatory (10.85%), antimicrobial (10 .85%), antimalarial (5.19%) and antioxidant (4.72%). Among the traditional communities surveyed were rural communities (50%) and quilombola communities (13.64%). The present study indicates that there was a significant increase in publications involving ethnopharmacology in Brazil, mainly from 2010, associated with a greater diversification of the researched objectives.

Abstract (sommario):
The Saussurean linguistics in Brazil in the 21st centuryIn this paper we go back to the question on the points of view on saussurean linguistics in Brazil in the beginning of 21st century. We analyze the abstracts of papers presented at three events held in Brazil in 2013, on the occasion of the centenary of Saussure's death. This analysis allows some conclusions. It can be said there is an interest on Saussure’s thought in Brazil. However, the interest is little expressive and circumscribed to punctual spaces. Although current Brazilian Linguistics does not manifest a large curiosity for Saussure’s thought, the first decades of 21st century put light on the interest in discussing this thought’s revolutionary nature. Besides, we can notice the interest in Saussure in Brazil is aligned to the grand themes to which a great part of the researchers dedicates themselves: teaching and discourse. Keywords: History. Abstract (sommario):
Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate resilience, regeneration and sustainability in Brazil, with the aim of discussing the process of occupation of urban areas; possible adverse effects on the environment and society; the impact of consumption and the construction of more sustainable cities and the commitment to future generations. Theoretical Framework: The concepts of resilience, sustainable development and urban regeneration stand out as the basis of the research, providing an interesting foundation for understanding the context of the investigation. Method: Exploratory, descriptive study with a qualitative approach anchored in a narrative review that allowed us to converge on an interpretative understanding of urban resilience in Brazil towards sustainable development. Results and Discussion: It is not possible to slow down economic advances, however, as the 2030 Agenda prioritizes, bridges must be built for conscious consumption and production. Gentrification and favelaization are examples that can point to the consequence of the rural exodus and the development of cities that increasingly consume non-renewable natural resources. Two cases can be examples to mitigate actions that affect ecosystems: “Contingency Plan on the Hills of Rio de Janeiro” and the “ProMorar Project in Recife”. Research Implications: Reflections involving the adverse effects arising from unplanned anthropogenic interventions and their impact on ecosystem imbalance point to changes aimed at actions to alleviate this process. Originality/Value: The importance of conscious consumption is defended, linked to the process of minimizing the adverse effects of the urbanization process, as ways to protect future generations.

The article considers political, economic, social and cultural aspects of Brazilian-African cooperation at the end of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century. At the present stage, after two decades of active development, Brazilian policy towards Africa has been losing momentum. Nowadays the cooperation between Brazil and African countries requires developing a new strategy.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Agriculture in the 21st century faces multiple challenges to produce food for the growing population using ethical/sustainable and efficient methods safely for humans and the environment. Brazil today is a world leader in terms of production of food of plant origin, both for human consumption and animal feed. Agriculture and livestock raising are critical economic activities in maintaining a positive balance in its economy. As a consequence, the registration and use of pesticides in Brazil have grown at an accelerated rate. This work shows the current situation in Brazil in terms of the prevailing laws about the registration of pesticides, with a focus on the toxicological aspects related to human health. The regulatory aspects of registration of pesticides in Brazil, the mandatory testing for evaluating pesticide toxicity, adoption of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, and recent progress toward nonanimal methods to toxicity evaluation were explored in this work. In this field, Brazil has advanced and there are opportunities and challenges. There is still much to be done and investments to be made so that Brazil can definitively consolidate its conduct within the context of a Modern Regulatory Toxicology, which has entered the 21st century.

Abstract (sommario):
The industry of the 21st Century will be totally different from the one we experienced in the 19th and 20th centuries. It will be technology-intensive and energy-wise clean. The industry of the 21st century should be biodegradable and sustainable. Instead of transforming only products and raw materials it must transform the human beings. Brazilian agriculture with its technological advances and sophisticated production may be an important partner of the United States to create a new biological industry for the 21st Century. Brazil is the world’s leading producer of cotton, orange juice, chicken, beef, sugar, ethanol, biodiesel, soy, corn, among others. Brazil has the latest technology to genetically modify plants and animals. The United States is the world’s largest producer of many of the state-of-the-art technology products. Cooperation between the two countries in terms of genetic improvement of plants and animals has lasted for more than 40 years. Now, the next challenge is to invent a new industry and a new economy that can face the challenges ahead. These are some of the key gates to the bioeconomy.

Abstract (sommario):
The article presents the evolution of favela’s images in Brazilian cinematography; from the first productions from the 1950s until the end of the first decade of the 21st century. The author tries to systematize them by distinguishing three periods (the 50s / 60s, the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, the first decade of 21st century). The author discusses the change of the subject matter and the image of favela’s residents: from paternalistic images of alienation, otherness and mutual distrust, through homeliness, to relationships dominated by the world of crime at the beginning of the 21st century. Cinematography is like a mirror reflecting socio-political changes which took place in Brazil and affected its inhabitants in abovementioned periods. The analysis of these changes reveals their direction and nature which focus, like in the lens, on example of Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract (sommario):
The Brazilian economy was, until the end of the 19th Century, based on slave labour. However, in this first quarter of the 21st Century, the problem persists. These situations tend to be mistaken with “simple” violations of labour laws. This work aims to establish Occupational Health and Safety parameters, focusing on energy needs, to distinguish between the breach of labour legislation and modern rural slavery in the 21st Century in Brazil. In response to this challenge, bibliographical research was carried out on the feeding and energy replenishment conditions of Brazilian slaves in the 19th Century. Obtained data were compared with a sample where 392 cases of neo-slavery in Brazil are described. The energy spent and the energy supplied was calculated to identify the enslaved workers’ general feeding conditions in the two historical periods. The general conditions of food and water supply were analysed. It was possible to identify three comparable parameters: food quality, food quantity, and water supply. It was concluded that there is a parallelism of energy replenishment conditions between Brazilian slaves and neo-slaves of the 19th and 21st centuries, respectively, different from that of free workers. This difference can help authorities identify and punish instances of modern slavery.

Abstract (sommario):
The global Covid-19 pandemic had seen inequalities much exacerbated and disparities between and within nations widened. The socio-economic crisis experienced in Brazil is no exception. The long-term impacts of the pandemic on our socio-economic and political lives and how they shape the production and reproduction of inequalities will continue to dominate contemporary sociological debates. We propose a set of original papers that focus not only on the measurement of social inequalities, but seek to articulate the complex social processes based on new empirical evidence on wealth distribution, well-being and life chances in the 21st century. Despite being a late-industrialized country, the general trends observed in Brazil in inequalities can shed light on similar developments in other societies, and this Special Issue aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the persistent and deepening inequalities worldwide.

Abstract (sommario):
This research aims to compare the strategic interests and the positioning at the foreign policy level of Brazil and Turkey in the 21st century, considering the rise to power of, respectively, Workers’ Party (PT, in Portuguese) and Justice and Development’s Party (AKP, in Turkish). Methodologically, it was used bibliographical research and analysis of speeches in the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) between 2010 and 2015. It was verified convergence between Brazil and Turkey in themes as the acknowledgment of the multipolarity of the World Order, the necessity of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reform, the importance of the fortification of the global economic governance by G-20 and the compromise with the International Law, with the terrorism combat and with the Humans Right protections. As divergence point, it was verified the debates about the sort of reform to be implemented at the UNSC and some questions involving the Arab Spring, such as the military intervention at Libya in 2011. At last, some themes are more recurrent at one country’s foreign policy than another’s; as topics regarding Central Asia and Middle East, at Turkey’s case, and subjects regarding BRICS and south-american regional integration, at Brazil’s case.

Abstract (sommario):
Macaúba is a fruit found in several regions of the Brazilian territory and stands out for producing an oil with potential characteristics for use as a raw material in industries in different areas such as in the production of biodiesel, biokerosene, organic fertilizers and animal ration. An advanced search was performed in the title and abstract fields of the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) database. Patents related to macaúba were grouped by the number of files per decade, number of patents by holder and characteristics of granted patents. With the insertion of this mechanism, the most recent applications were listed through a mapping of patents involving macaúba and the main sectors that invested in the fruit. It was certified that, between 2000 and 2021, thirty patents related to macaúba were registered, and nine were granted. Minas Gerais stood out in technological development, especially after the creation of a public policy for the development of this species and its use, the Pro-macaúba Law (Law No. 19,485/2011). It is the state with the most deposited patents.

Abstract (sommario):
Expatriate staff members are important in the implementation of strategies for multinational corporations. This study investigates the determinant factors of assigning Japanese expatriates to manage their subsidiaries in Brazil at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Understanding the determinants of the international designation of people for managing foreign subsidiaries collaborates with debate and discussion on expatriation strategies, which are not well established in literature. The research utilized a quantitative study to which we applied a multiple regression analysis based on database of Japanese subsidiaries in Brazil. The results show that the main determinant factor of the international assignment is related to the subsidiary size. Moreover, it was identified that equity ownership, experience in the host country, and industry type did not impact the Japanese expatriation to Brazil.

Abstract (sommario):
This article introduces the special issue “Brazilian Criminology in the 21st Century” that is composed of seven studies of contemporary security problems and related public security initiatives in Brazil. They are multidisciplinary contributions employing a large variety of methods, written by researchers based on Brazilian universities or research executed in cooperation with international colleagues. This is a unique and valuable reference source for researchers interested in Brazilian and Latin American security challenges as well as attempts to address them. By recognizing current barriers in knowledge production and sharing, the special issue calls for the creation of new opportunities for joint knowledge from the “criminologies” of the Global South and those from the Global North, befitting an inclusive global criminology worthy of the 21st century.

Abstract (sommario):
At least one million extant insect species have been described on Earth, of which 150,000 belong to the megadiverse order Diptera. We here synthesize data from the last 15 years of taxonomic work in Diptera, mapping the world taxonomic productivity in the order. Our data shows an increasing importance of China and Brazil in taxonomic production, along with other traditional centres such as the USA and Europe. We correlate our database with estimates of extinction rates to determine the amount of basic taxonomic research still necessary to have the description of the fly diversity before extinction. Due to the growing recent extinction rates, it is unlikely that we will be able to entirely describe unknown fly diversity before their demise. Even considering that is still a constant and increasing speed of new species description, raising the number of active dipterists in the world is an urgent priority and the only real solution.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate the yield potential and the water-limited yield of soybean (Glycine max) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in two future climate scenarios, SRES A1B and RCP4.5, using the SoySim and Cropgro-Soybean simulation models. In both models, three maturity groups (4.8, 5.5, and 6.0) and six sowing dates (09/01, 10/01, 11/01, 12/01, 01/01, and 02/01) were considered in the SRES A1B-CMIP3 and RCP4.5-CMIP5 scenarios. The analyzed variable was grain yield at 13% moisture (Mg ha-1). Soybean yield potential in Rio Grande do Sul should increase up to the end of the 21st century, according to both scenarios. Water-limited yield of soybean also increases up to the end of the 21st century, by the SRES A1B-CMIP3 scenario; however, it will decrease in future periods, by the RCP4.5-CMIP5 scenario because of limited soil water.

Abstract (sommario):
Dengue is hyperendemic in Brazil, with outbreaks affecting all regions. Previous studies identified geographical barriers to dengue transmission in Brazil, beyond which certain areas, such as South Brazil and the Amazon rainforest, were relatively protected from outbreaks. Recent data shows these barriers are being eroded. In this study, we explore the drivers of this expansion and identify the current limits to the dengue transmission zone. We used a spatio-temporal additive model to explore the associations between dengue outbreaks and temperature suitability, urbanisation, and connectivity to the Brazilian urban network. The model was applied to a binary outbreak indicator, assuming the official threshold value of 300 cases per 100,000 residents, for Brazil’s municipalities between 2001 and 2020. We found a nonlinear relationship between higher levels of connectivity to the Brazilian urban network and the odds of an outbreak, with lower odds in metropoles compared to regional capitals. The number of months per year with suitable temperature conditions for Aedes mosquitoes was positively associated with the dengue outbreak occurrence. Temperature suitability explained most interannual and spatial variation in South Brazil, confirming this geographical barrier is influenced by lower seasonal temperatures. Municipalities that had experienced an outbreak previously had double the odds of subsequent outbreaks. We identified geographical barriers to dengue transmission in South Brazil, western Amazon, and along the northern coast of Brazil. Although a southern barrier still exists, it has shifted south, and the Amazon no longer has a clear boundary. Few areas of Brazil remain protected from dengue outbreaks. Communities living on the edge of previous barriers are particularly susceptible to future outbreaks as they lack immunity. Control strategies should target regions at risk of future outbreaks as well as those currently within the dengue transmission zone.

Abstract (sommario):
Industrial development, as it diffuses globally to encompass the great emerging 21st century powers China, India and Brazil, increasingly has to place energy issues at the core – to move off the fossil fuels that worked in the past but are creating impossible tensions now and to move towards a new green growth model that promises to reduce or eliminate those tensions as it expands. In this paper I review the issues involved in the new ‘green industrial strategy’ and discuss the institutional state strategies being deployed in China, India, Brazil and South Africa – the BICS countries – to drive the transition that is under way. The argument goes that in the 21st century the developmental state has perforce to be a practitioner of green industrial strategies. The Brazilian model with its threefold involvement of state institutions in developing rolling ten-year plans for renewable energy deployment, targeted investment with local content requirements through the national development bank and promotion of cost eductions through state-mediated reverse auctions, is discussed as a viable strategy. Keywords: industrialization, strategic planning, sustainable development, public policy, renewable energy, international cooperation, case study

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Fire has a fundamental role in the Earth system as it influences global and local ecosystem patterns and processes, such as vegetation distribution and structure, the carbon cycle and climate. Since, in the global context, Brazil is one of the regions with higher fire activity, an assessment is here performed of the sensitivity of the wildfire regime in Brazilian savanna and shrubland areas to changes in regional climate during the 21st Century, for an intermediate scenario (RCP4.5) of climate change. The assessment is based on a spatial and temporal analysis of a meteorological fire danger index specifically developed for Brazilian biomes, which was evaluated based on regional climate simulations of temperature, relative humidity and precipitation using the Rossby Centre Regional Climate Model (RCA4) forced by the EC-Earth earth system model. Results show a systematic increase in the extreme levels of fire danger throughout the 21st Century that mainly results from the increase in maximum daily temperature, which rises by about 2 °C between 2005 and 2100. This study provides new insights about projected fire activity in Brazilian woody savannas associated to climate change and is expected to benefit the user community, from governmental policies to land management and climate researches.

Abstract (sommario):
The author considers the political aspect of cooperation between China and South America – its features and basis. The research reveals China’s main goals in South America, such as promoting a «one China» policy, access to raw materials, and building strong political contacts to increase its global influence. It also highlights the benefits that South American countries have sought to gain from cooperating with China. Particular attention is on China’s political cooperation with Brazil, Venezuela and Argentina under the administrations of left-wing ideologies (L. I. Lula da Silva, W. Chavez and N. Kirchner) and their key features. It was found that the presence of left-wing political forces in power in these countries contributed to the establishment of closer contacts with China. The main marker of intensifying political dialogue was the signing of a strategic partnership with Venezuela (2001), Argentina (2004) and Brazil (1993). The aim of the article is to analyze the political cooperation between China and South American countries with a focus on Brazil, Venezuela and Argentina in the 1990’s – early 21st century (before the adoption of the «One Belt – One Road» strategy in March 2013). The research methodology involves the application of a critical method to consider China’s political cooperation with South America. The historical-genetic method is used to consider the political cooperation (its origins and intensification) for its most perfect reproduction. The synthesis method was used to form a holistic picture of China’s political cooperation with the countries of the region. The comparative method is also used to compare the main features of China’s political cooperation with Brazil, Venezuela and Argentina. The scientific novelty of the study is to consider the political aspect of China’s cooperation with South America, with a focus on Brazil, Venezuela and Argentina as key partners in the region, which helps to reveal previously unexplained aspects of this topic. The study found that the intensification of China’s political cooperation with South America was facilitated on the one hand by the success of Beijing’s economic reforms, which prompted the Chinese government to increase its interest in the South American region, which is rich in raw materials; on the other – the liberalization of the economies of South America and their dynamic development. During the study period, China’s political cooperation was concentrated with Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina. It was found that a common feature of China’s political cooperation with these countries was the criticism of the international order led by the United States.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper aims to identify the importance of primary commodities in Brazil's foreign trade and define the commodity groups in whose exports Brazil has the highest comparative advantages. At the same time, we want to find out how these comparative advantages have changed and developed in the period from 2001 to 2020, i.e., in the period of high prices of primary commodities (2003 – 2012) and the period after until the outbreak of the global pandemic COVID-19. To achieve this goal, we used the Lafay index of international specialization using data at the four-digit level of the Harmonised System. The results of the Lafay index indicate that Brazil achieves comparative advantages, especially in exports of agricultural products, food, and some minerals. A significant comparative advantage is achieved in the soybean and iron ore commodity groups.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article, we consider the audio-visual production carried out by black women in Brazil since the second decade of the 21st century. Our objective is to propose a reflection, adopting an intersectional approach, on how an oppositional gaze creates images that break with racist stereotypes and challenge whiteness (hooks, 1992). We argue that the production of black women in Brazil questions the reproduction of institutional racism and digs deeper into the issue of colonial past. They create a narrative dispute that the oppositional feminine gaze imposes on the film industry.

The 21st Century has observed an increase transformation based on economy and social patterns. The challenging of education is now prepared for the future, not for the present. The changing environment of learning is related to competencies and skills rather than in particular subjects and theories. How to teach what is not present yet? Why education must be profoundly related to both Information and Communication Technology and human ethnic? This paper is dedicated to highlight some of these points, bringing some reflections regarding these topics about the relationship between Africa and Latin America, especially Brazil.

Abstract (sommario):
In the early 21st century, Brazil began adopting a series of energy policies aimed at analyzing and understanding the dynamics of its energy matrix. In this context, this article aims to analyze the dynamics of the Brazilian energy matrix based on the main energy policies adopted in the early 21st century. The research methodology begins with a bib-liographic review on the topic, directed at understanding the studied dynamics, as well as the construction of a theoretical framework from directly and indirectly related works. The bibliographic survey was conducted through research in libraries, digital repositories, and scientific journals, referencing books, dissertations, theses, databases, and articles related to the topic. This investigation is important as it deals with energy-related issues that are related to climate concerns. We conclude that, based on existing data, although there are concerns and debates about the environment and climate change in Brazil, there has been little progress in terms of the percentage of renewable energy sources incorporated into the Brazilian energy matrix between 1990 and 2020. Examining the Brazilian energy panorama in 1990 and 2020, we can see that the share of renewable sources reached 49%, making it the highest percentage of renewable sources in the internal energy supply during this period of analysis, with 51% of non-renewable sources.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes the democratic crisis experienced by Brazil from the second decade of the 21st century onwards. The aim is to investigate how this historical period can be characterized. The text asserts that it is inappropriate to understand Brazil without observing its historical distrust of democracy and lack of commitment to the rule of law. The research is based on the assumption that Brazilian modernization in the transition from the 20th to the 21st century was ambiguous but with important achievements. However, the authoritarian mentality and the gap in terms of the quality of political participation are factors of structural permanence. The hypothesis is that Brazil is experiencing a specific moment characterized by the awakening of an authoritarian and conservative mentality that impacts both the State and civil society. The research methodology is based on a bibliographical discussion, with contributions in history, political science, and law. The subjects are discussed in theoretical terms to understand the problems related to the political participation gap, the inequality between citizens, the difficulties of civic culture (mainly in the digital environment), and some inherent weaknesses in democratic performance. Starting from the idea that civic culture influences institutions and these, in turn, impact civic culture, Brazil is currently experiencing a political and cultural setback. Contrary to what could be imagined a few years ago, the process of Brazilian social modernization is threatened in its most important achievements, which implies a danger to the values that sustain democracy. Keywords: authoritarianism; brazilian democracy; political culture; political participation; the rule of law.

Abstract (sommario):
Relation between oil trade and political regimes, climate change and problems of managing natural resources, mining technologies and fighting corruption and many others constitute the phenomenon of a multicomponent energy policy, the study of which is located at the intersection of natural and social sciences. Latin American region has large hydrocarbon reserves, huge hydropower potential, as well as significant opportunities to generate wind and solar energy. Historically, Latin America has occupied a small share of world energy production - about 5 %, where Venezuela, Mexico and Brazil have long been the only players of a global level. However, in the 21st century, factors such as the discovery of pre-salt oil deposits in Brazil, promising forecasts for the development of alternative gas sources in Argentina and the opening of Mexican oil industry for foreign companies after more than seventy years of the monopoly of Pemex, gave an additional impetus to the development of oil and gas industries of the region. The close relationship between energy industry and political context of a number of Latin American countries makes the region’s energy market less predictable, as changes cannot be predicted using standard industry analysis tools. This article analyzes the most significant episodes of political intervention - external or internal - to the energy industry in the 21st century, as well as the impact that events and decisions in this industry had on the regional policy. The authors analyze distinctive examples of the interconnectedness of these areas, from the “resource diplomacy” of Venezuela to the decisive actions of A.M. Lopez Obrador in Mexican energy in the first months of his presidency, and draw parallels between the chains of events in politics and energy. As the cases of Brazil, Mexico, Bolivia, and Venezuela, cited in the article, show, the cost of error becomes extremely high when its consequences can destabilize both sectors due to their close interweaving.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, I hope to shed light on the social and institutional transformation processes in Brazil in the 21st century, contrasting what can be understood as two populist waves. The first is the one led by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as a left-wing leader whose government has been internationally recognized for implementing distributive economic policies (inclusion of the poorest majority) and inclusive social policies (inclusion of racial and sexual minorities). The second is the right-wing wave led by Jair Bolsonaro, internationally recognized, but rather for embracing a discourse contrary to the inclusive practices adopted by their predecessor. Thus, the question I want to answer is: How can the same concept fit into such different phenomena? My hypothesis is that we are facing two patterns of representative relations. An inclusive one that aims to expand the number of groups that can be properly represented within the political collectivity, increasing its pluralism, and an exclusive one that aims to restrict them, shortening the plurality of groups and identities that forms the people. In both, the theme of racial and sexual minorities becomes a priority. Through this discussion, I want to emphasize the substantive and existential quality of the differences between these two representative patterns that are sometimes neglected or reduced by those who use the concept of populism to attribute some kind of symmetry or ideological convergence between them.

Abstract (sommario):
Summary The International Diabetes Federation (IDF-2015) estimates the existence of 30,900 children under 15 years old with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) in Brazil, and an increase of 3.0% per year is expected. This review focused on meta-analysis and pediatric diabetes update articles in order to draw attention to the need of planning coping strategies to support this serious public health problem in coming years. DM1 is considered an immuno-mediated disease with a complex transmission influenced by genetic and environmental factors responsible for a gradual destruction of the insulin producing pancreatic beta cells. Seroconversion to DM1-associated autoantibodies and abnormalities in metabolic tests that assess insulin secretion and glucose tolerance can be used as predictive criteria of beta cells functional reserve and the onset of the clinical disease. Symptomatic DM1 treatment is complex and the maintenance of good metabolic control is still the only effective strategy for preserving beta cell function. Disease duration and hyperglycemia are both risk factors for the onset of chronic vascular complications that negatively affect the quality of life and survival of these patients. In this regard, health teams must be trained to provide the best possible information on pediatric diabetes, through continuing education programs focused on enabling these young people and their families to diabetes self-management.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Identification of terrestrial carbon (C) sources and sinks is critical for understanding the Earth system as well as mitigating and adapting to climate change resulting from greenhouse gas emissions. Predicting whether a given location will act as a C source or sink using terrestrial ecosystem models (TEMs) is challenging due to net flux being the difference between far larger, spatially and temporally variable fluxes with large uncertainties. Uncertainty in projections of future dynamics, critical for policy evaluation, has been determined using multi-TEM intercomparisons, for various emissions scenarios. This approach quantifies structural and forcing errors. However, the role of parameter error within models has not been determined. TEMs typically have defined parameters for specific plant functional types generated from the literature. To ascertain the importance of parameter error in forecasts, we present a Bayesian analysis that uses data on historical and current C cycling for Brazil to parameterise five TEMs of varied complexity with a retrieval of model error covariance at 1∘ spatial resolution. After evaluation against data from 2001–2017, the parameterised models are simulated to 2100 under four climate change scenarios spanning the likely range of climate projections. Using multiple models, each with per pixel parameter ensembles, we partition forecast uncertainties. Parameter uncertainty dominates across most of Brazil when simulating future stock changes in biomass C and dead organic matter (DOM). Uncertainty of simulated biomass change is most strongly correlated with net primary productivity allocation to wood (NPPwood) and mean residence time of wood (MRTwood). Uncertainty of simulated DOM change is most strongly correlated with MRTsoil and NPPwood. Due to the coupling between these variables and C stock dynamics being bi-directional, we argue that using repeat estimates of woody biomass will provide a valuable constraint needed to refine predictions of the future carbon cycle. Finally, evaluation of our multi-model analysis shows that wood litter contributes substantially to fire emissions, necessitating a greater understanding of wood litter C cycling than is typically considered in large-scale TEMs.

Abstract (sommario):
Coaraci colaborou em periódicos, como: Illustração Brazil, South American Mail, Illustração Popular, Folha Nova, Gazetinha, The New York Herald, Cidade do Rio, Correio do Povo, O Paiz.
