Abstract (sommario):
Brazilian economic reforms in 21st century have great importance for the international community, especially for other countries of the middle level of development. The authors believe that, in spite of all the difficulties and crises, Brazil has made a decisive step forward by reforming its social structure and retaining democracy. Social reforms (especially minimal wage) led to strengthening middle class, but also to elevating its social aspirations. At this dramatic junction the economic development of the country was aggravated by external shocks and unsuccessful budget policies. The complex interaction of social macroeconomic policies in Brazil with strong external shocks gives lessons to countries with similar characteristics. The pandemic and recession of 2020–2021 have made the path of development more complicated but there is room for optimism for Brazil in the long run.

Abstract (sommario):
The article deals with the historical paths of black ethnic-racial identity in Brazil. The text discusses the historical trajectory of the socio-racial relations of the black population in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries from the perspective of building a black identity. In the 19th century, the Afro-Brazilian population encountered obstacles in building its own identity. In the 20th century, there was a more accentuated struggle for the construction of a black identity. In that century, identities called Sociological Subject (HALL, 2006), Resistance and Project (CASTELLS, 1999) were configured. In the 21st century there are advances in the construction of this identity due to the previous historical struggles of the black generations. The study points out the Resistance and Project identity models. The investigation consists of a descriptive-analytical study on the types of identities that coexisted and coexist in the process of Afro-Brazilian identity construction - from the 19th to the 21st century in the perspectives of Hall (2006; 2011) and Castells (1999; 2002), Elias (1994; 2001) and Goffman (1999; 2004). The study concludes that in each historical moment the Afro-Brazilian population built a singularity of identity in the light of delimited theorists.

Abstract (sommario):
Brazil is a country with a large party of the population, including traditional communities, that use plants for medicinal purposes, however, the prospect of drugs derived from plants is still little explored. The present study aimed to carry out a systematic review of the literature, in an attempt to understand how studies involving ethnopharmacology have developed in Brazil during the 21st century. The Scielo and PubMed data bases were used, using the keywords “ethnopharmacology” and “Brazil”. In a total of 212 articles were selected and the highest number of publications in the years of, respectively: 2018 (9.43%), 2020 (8.96%) and 2014 (8.96%). Experimental studies (laboratory studies, such as phytochemicals and biological activity) accounted 41.98% of the total, followed by literature reviews (36.32%) and ethno-directed interviews (20.28%). The results showed that the most common types of studies were popular use and biological activity (33.96%), followed by studies of popular use, phytochemical composition and biological activity (21.70%) and ethno-directed survey (20.75%). The most cited botanical families were Fabaceae (8.49%), Asteraceae (5.19%) and Lamiaceae (2.83%) and the main biological activities evaluated were anti-inflammatory (10.85%), antimicrobial (10 .85%), antimalarial (5.19%) and antioxidant (4.72%). Among the traditional communities surveyed were rural communities (50%) and quilombola communities (13.64%). The present study indicates that there was a significant increase in publications involving ethnopharmacology in Brazil, mainly from 2010, associated with a greater diversification of the researched objectives.

Abstract (sommario):
The Saussurean linguistics in Brazil in the 21st centuryIn this paper we go back to the question on the points of view on saussurean linguistics in Brazil in the beginning of 21st century. We analyze the abstracts of papers presented at three events held in Brazil in 2013, on the occasion of the centenary of Saussure's death. This analysis allows some conclusions. It can be said there is an interest on Saussure’s thought in Brazil. However, the interest is little expressive and circumscribed to punctual spaces. Although current Brazilian Linguistics does not manifest a large curiosity for Saussure’s thought, the first decades of 21st century put light on the interest in discussing this thought’s revolutionary nature. Besides, we can notice the interest in Saussure in Brazil is aligned to the grand themes to which a great part of the researchers dedicates themselves: teaching and discourse. Keywords: History. Abstract (sommario):
Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate resilience, regeneration and sustainability in Brazil, with the aim of discussing the process of occupation of urban areas; possible adverse effects on the environment and society; the impact of consumption and the construction of more sustainable cities and the commitment to future generations. Theoretical Framework: The concepts of resilience, sustainable development and urban regeneration stand out as the basis of the research, providing an interesting foundation for understanding the context of the investigation. Method: Exploratory, descriptive study with a qualitative approach anchored in a narrative review that allowed us to converge on an interpretative understanding of urban resilience in Brazil towards sustainable development. Results and Discussion: It is not possible to slow down economic advances, however, as the 2030 Agenda prioritizes, bridges must be built for conscious consumption and production. Gentrification and favelaization are examples that can point to the consequence of the rural exodus and the development of cities that increasingly consume non-renewable natural resources. Two cases can be examples to mitigate actions that affect ecosystems: “Contingency Plan on the Hills of Rio de Janeiro” and the “ProMorar Project in Recife”. Research Implications: Reflections involving the adverse effects arising from unplanned anthropogenic interventions and their impact on ecosystem imbalance point to changes aimed at actions to alleviate this process. Originality/Value: The importance of conscious consumption is defended, linked to the process of minimizing the adverse effects of the urbanization process, as ways to protect future generations.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Agriculture in the 21st century faces multiple challenges to produce food for the growing population using ethical/sustainable and efficient methods safely for humans and the environment. Brazil today is a world leader in terms of production of food of plant origin, both for human consumption and animal feed. Agriculture and livestock raising are critical economic activities in maintaining a positive balance in its economy. As a consequence, the registration and use of pesticides in Brazil have grown at an accelerated rate. This work shows the current situation in Brazil in terms of the prevailing laws about the registration of pesticides, with a focus on the toxicological aspects related to human health. The regulatory aspects of registration of pesticides in Brazil, the mandatory testing for evaluating pesticide toxicity, adoption of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, and recent progress toward nonanimal methods to toxicity evaluation were explored in this work. In this field, Brazil has advanced and there are opportunities and challenges. There is still much to be done and investments to be made so that Brazil can definitively consolidate its conduct within the context of a Modern Regulatory Toxicology, which has entered the 21st century.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is a practitioner’s perspective on the field of movement studies initiated by the European artist-researcher Rudolf Laban (1879-1958) and its particular context in Brazil. Not only does it examine the field of knowledge that Laban proposed alongside his collaborators, but it considers the voices of Laban practitioners in Brazil as evidence of the contemporary practices developed in the field. As a modernist artist and researcher Rudolf Laban initiated a heritage of movement studies focussed on investigating the artistic expression of human beings, which still reverberates in the work of artists and scholars around the world. Thus my research is shaped by an investigation into the experience of the field’s practitioners, and how their activities shape the materialisation of Laban’s discourse nowadays. In this sense, not only their experience but also my own (as a Laban-practitioner myself) were the main materials and sources for my investigation. From this material I asked questions regarding the landscape of Laban practices in Brazil and the contemporaneity of Laban’s discourse. To develop this study I initiated an oral history project (collecting narratives from Brazilian practitioners), which evolved into an ethnography of the international and Brazilian field of Laban studies. In fact my intense participation and individual exploration of Laban praxis shaped my methods to articulate an embodied debate of the field. As a ‘history of the present’ based on individual and collective experiences, this study draws on Foucault to drive a critical perspective on the material and to finally debate the authorship of Laban’s discourse. This thesis thus starts with an overview of Laban studies. It then narrows down to consider the scape of Laban practices in Brazil, detailing the work of three local artists. While submerging myself in the field’s practices and theories and the lives of the Brazilian Laban-practitioners, I found that the work that is developed outside the United-States and European circle of practice and research may provide clues for a valuable understanding of the materiality of Laban’s discourse in the twenty-first century. Thus, this study proposes that practitioners who are engaged with the (constant) development of Laban studies can potentially be considered as (co-)authors of Laban praxis as it emerges in Brazil and worldwide.

Abstract (sommario):
This research looks at social policy making in Venezuela and Brazil with the objective of alleviating poverty, with special focus on meeting Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that were set in 2000. Considering the leftist democratic governments that have been established in Latin America since Hugo Chávez was elected president in 1998, and later with Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in 2002, the research seeks to understand and illustrate what nuances exist in strategy, ideas and implementation of social policy that would positively affect the underprivileged for a more equal and just society. The two countries have deep historical and structural inequalities from slavery, colonialism, imbalanced distribution of resources and like most developing nations of the Global South, have had to endure structural adjustments that have entrenched poverty levels further. Arguments in the past have been made for economic prosperity and economic growth as good indicators for development, however, the research takes a comparative analysis on how Venezuela (through Barrio Adentro and multiple state driven Missions) and Brazil (state supported Bolsa Familia and Universal Health System), have targeted health and education as the primary sectors not just to transform society but also because it is through these sectors that the most effective and efficient manner to measure human development which has thus far been neglected. The research also examines the leadership of the countries which speaks to the differing approaches adopted, style, rhetoric and political realities; and how they have been received not just domestically, but also internationally. The outcomes of the research illustrate a good link between literacy, education and health and a healthy level of state intervention that requires reciprocal social participation for programmes to succeed. Brazil and Venezuela have shown notable creativity and effectiveness in this regard.

After experiencing strong economic growth in the first decade of the 21st century, Brazil and Turkey have been regarded as two of the most dynamic and promising emerging economies. Nevertheless, several signs of economic difficulties and political tensions have recently been reappearing simultaneously in both countries. We believe that these signs and their simultaneity in the two countries are better understood by taking a retrospective look into both countries’ economic history, which reveal to be surprisingly parallel. In a first part, a comprehensive comparison of Brazil and Turkey’s economic history is undertaken to show the numerous similarities in the economic policy challenges and choices that both countries went through from the turn of the Great Depression to the first decade of the 21st century. These common economic policy choices define a remarkably analogous development path characterized first by the adoption of the import-substitution industrialization (ISI) model in the context of the world recession in the 1930s, then by the intensification and final crisis of this model in the 1980s, and finally by two decades of stabilization and transition to a liberal economic model. In a second part, the development of economic and political institutions as well as the underlying political economy in both countries are analysed comparatively with a view to providing elements of explanation for the parallel observed in the first part. We contend that the institutional framework set up in both countries throughout this period also shared many fundamental characteristics and contributes to explain the comparable economic policy choices and economic performance. This study intends to give some helpful background to understand the current context in both countries. It is also an invitation to consider emerging economies in a broader historical and comparative perspective in order to better comprehend their institutional weaknesses and adopt a balanced view of their economic potential.

Abstract: This research analyzes Brazilian child-care policies that facilitate work-family articulation, focusing its role on the use of the demographic window opportunity afoot in the country. Mainly, it's argued that the absence or scarce public child-care may harm the use of this opportunity, firstly, by comprising the possibilities of women productive insertion, and secondly, by contributing for the propagation of class and intergenerational risks that impact negatively on children opportunities. It's analyzed the following policies of public sharing of family assistance tasks to children under six years old: (i) the existing at the regulation of labor world, basically, the guarantees and rights present at the Labor Laws Consolidation (LLC) and at the laws of social welfare; (ii) the social benefits to family with children, specifically the Family-Grant Program (FGP); and (iii) the access to crèches and kindergarten. It's evaluated the population's access to these policies, so as the family model they are based upon, implicitly or explicitly. It's noted that, despite of the increase of the level of public sharing regarding children's assistance and care tasks, that took place principally after 1988, the family still is the main institution of management of social risks to a substantial share of population. Furthermore, the family model that underpins the services and benefits.

Abstract (sommario):
In following several international migrants in the city of São Paulo, I found that inarticulate moments of hesitation, uncertainty, or suspension punctuated their trajectories. These fleeting and subtle instances revealed that people's lives were pervaded by a certain ‘messiness' that pointed out the limits of understanding life and the world through scientific standards of generalisation and coherence. Requiring a different attitude concerning the making of anthropology, ‘messiness' compelled my ethnographic account to admit that: firstly, people, places and situations, held a ‘mystery' that my efforts of scientific disclosure could never clarify completely; secondly, each attempt to live in the world became a very singular experimentation. In order to ethnographically do justice to the ‘mystery' and ‘singularity' I found in the lives I followed in São Paulo, this account found in Levinas's work inspiration to develop a phenomenological approach. This phenomenological approach combined two movements. The first movement searched for a way of incorporating the faltering occasions of inarticulacy in people's lives through imagination, signalling the limits of understanding these lives through objective knowledge, and proposing to appreciate them through processes of human recognition. This procedure was crafted as a ‘poetics of resonance', an aesthetic operation converting lived experience into written expression in a way that imagination can offer a sense of what it is to live a particular life or experience in its richness. The second movement in this phenomenological approach refers to the recognition of a human life in its singularity, attempting to substantiate it ethnographically in the form of particular ‘life-journeys', which is an approximation to what Levinas described as ‘uniqueness'. As follows, seven specific life-journeys are presented, organised as ‘journeys of being', ‘in-be(ing)tween journeys', and ‘journeys of becoming', according to the elements of affiliation each research participant stressed in their respective course shared with me. From the richness of these ethnographic particulars, insights for migration and urban studies were derived from the phenomenological approach undertaken. The ethnographic evidence questioned a sense of complexity based on categorisation in migration studies and suggested that for the portrayed life-journeys a concept of immensity is more appropriate than a concept of identity. Concerning theories about the urban, the mobility manifested by the life-journeys in São Paulo and beyond conveyed, not a city of ethnic neighbourhoods, but a city of ‘rough' experimentation, according to people's positionality and their ability to find their own ways in the city and in the world.

In this thesis we analyze the meanings attributed to what is known as the crisis of education. Because it is apparently a very broad and diffuse idea, the Delors Report, published in Brazil under the title Education - a treasure to be discovered was adopted as a starting point. The impact of this report was examined in the elaboration of the National Curricular Parameters for High School, specifically regarding this dimensions and perspectives related to the conception of knowledge and qualification. On this aspect, it is analyzed how the understanding of the education crisis was appropriated by the Brazilian government, at that time, in order to implement curricular changes in Secondary School

Abstract: This research analyzes the operation of four transnational record labels that operate in the Brazilian phonographic market, as of the establishment of the compact disc as a support pattern for the reproduction and sale of recorded music. Assuming that in times of economic and cultural globalization, this market behaves and becomes so diverse, we investigate what the structural features of such changes are and how the different actors competing for this space act. Thus, considering the configuration of those labels as majors, that is, companies that dominate the production and distribution of recorded music around the world, and the position they start to occupy thereafter, we explore how they organize themselves against the challenges imposed by the global economy - their attachments to transnational corporations, the uses of digital technologies in their production processes, the increase of worldwide competition, etc. - and, how, they save the reproduction mechanisms of this field or not, in which they are founders of their own construction principles. Through a qualitative empirical research carried out within the four majors - interviews, personal accounts, statistical sources, technical reports or even publications - we have sought to capture the operational logic of this particular universe of cultural industries, as of the way those who are in dominant positions engage, justify, and give meaning to their practices and actions.

Two important strategic pillars have guided Brazil’s recent foreign policy: the global axis, with an emphasis in the multilateralism and the new global arrangements, which aspires an emerging power position for the country; and the regional axis, facing South America, aimed at increasing its projection and presence among their neighbors. Regarding the regional level, a growing Brazilian institutional participation in mediating crises can be found as in the Paraguay case (2012). It is noteworthy that the Brazilian coordination in such an event happened through the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), expanding regional cooperation. Thus, Brazil's performance in the recent crisis management was the motivating factor for the study and analysis of how it organizes the country's presence in the South American context nowadays. From the rediscovery of regional space, with the landmark creation of Unasur in 2008, this study aims to verify how the 2012’s Paraguayan political crisis, which led to then-President Fernando Lugo’s deposition, reflected in the region, signaling the modus operandi of Unasur in managing crisis, and to analyze what was Brazil's role during these events. It is a qualitative research, with exploratory investigation, bibliographic and documental foundation, based on the reading of regional newspapers and, to a lesser extent, from outside the region, relative to the action of Unasur and the Brazilian postures through the crises during the period 2008-2012, with an emphasis in the Paraguayan crisis. It is believed that Unasur is becoming a regional institution that holds the primacy in resolving crises. In addition, Brazilian forward reactions to recent regional political instability processes can be seen as a new understanding of Brazil's coordination in South America, which always occurs in multilateral forums, avoiding possible diplomatic wear in bilateral relations.

In 2009, during the fifteenth edition of the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Brazilian diplomatic representation took a voluntary commitment to reduce national emissions of greenhouse gas effect. This was an outstanding event in the international climate change regime and in the trajectory of Brazilian environmental foreign policy because of the country's pioneering among the intermediaries economies that do not belong to Annex I. This attitude of Brazilian diplomacy is a part of the framework experienced by environmental multilateralism where the traditional division between North-South includes now the intermediate category of emerging economies. The performance of Brazil and other countries in that category was reflected in the discussions in the years after COP-15. The aim of this study is to analyze the performance of Brazilian diplomacy between the COP-15 and COP-21 concerning the challenges of climate change and multilateralism. Therefore, it is an analysis of the Brazilian environmental foreign policy during this period as well as a comparison with the performance of the BASIC countries in the same timeline.

The present research proposes to understand the narratives between the new media and the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, from a brief mapping of institutions that act at the intersection with the digital media as a confrontation production exercise, or in creative circumstances that explore new languages and approaches. In terms of functions, some issues stand out: how to create and implement new ways of performing museums? What are the changes necessary for the museum to account for the exposure and conservation of work in new media? What is the position of the museum in the face of new technologies, both in its use in the management and documentation of the collection and in the aid of education projects and support for visitation? For both the established museums and the museums being created today, the challenges that the new media present are enormous. They are ephemeral and dematerialized actions, works in process, built collectively, that manifest themselves in the direct clash with the ubiquitous time of cyberspace, generating strategies that subvert, recreate, amplify and deconstruct the meaning often anticipated by the digital context. In this way, the balance between conservation and exposure is threatened by the very dynamics of artistic production that stresses spatiotemporal distances, breaks with the paradigm of contemplation and calls for intervention, participation and intensifies mediation with works. In this sense, the present research addresses not only the productions and the experience of the museums in the context of the new media that cross the MAM-SP, but also points to questions to discuss the perspectives of the digital aesthetics in contemporary museums

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Following the 2010 Macondo Prospect oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the more stringent regulations for offshore oil and gas operations required an entirely new approach to wellbore cleanout ahead of the completion phase. With all previous practices and chemistries effectively ended, the task was to develop a new, reliable, sufficiently dense, environmentally friendly, clear-brine displacement system that would address the challenges of cleaning out aqueous- and non-aqueous-based drilling fluids as well as perform in the elevated pressures and temperatures of ultra-deepwater operations in the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, and West Africa.

Abstract (sommario):
Ease-of-use is of paramount importance to ensure the acceptability of a virtual platform. With that in mind, we sought to evaluate the usability of Microbial Resource Research Infrastructure (MIRRI)’s Collaborative Working Environment (CWE). Usability tests intend to determine whether an interface facilitates a user’s ability to complete tasks in the platform analyzed. For the MIRRI’s CWE user tests, 29 participants, aged between 25 and 65 years old, from 10 countries (Brazil, Chile, Colombia, France, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Peru, Portugal, Spain), with different professional backgrounds (i.e. Research/ Education, industry, Officers, among others) were invited to carry out activities within 3 modules of the platform, namely: (1) Microbial Resources Catalog (MRC), (2) Services and Workflows Catalog (SWC) and the (3) Transnational Access information and application submission (TNA). At the end of the experience, participants were asked to fill out the System Usability Scale (SUS) - a standardized questionnaire widely used to measure usability. Based on the SUS analysis, participants had a good perception of the usability of the MIRRI platform. MIRRI's CWE platform innovates in the unification of data and information from the microbiological universe. The usability analysis validates the user experience, thus ensuring that acceptance by the users is not hindered by poor ease-of-use.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article we present some reflections on racial issues that permeate society in the 21st century, after 134 years of the abolition of slavery. In view of recent statistical data that prove how unequal the paths experienced by black people are compared to the paths of white people in political, economic and social circles. The problematization of racial relations has progressively expanded in Brazilian society in the last decade, as well as debates on the subject. This problematization involves both the daily practices of these relationships, clashes and political actions, and the conceptual constructions related to them. We experience several social differences, and racism is the basis for understanding the social inequalities that still embarrass Brazilian society. The unacceptable distances that still separate blacks from whites, in the middle of the 21st century, which reflect on unequal access to goods and services, the job market, higher education, as well as the enjoyment of civil, social and economic rights. The racial practice affects the subjectivity of human beings, that is, in the construction of their identity. Dialogue about racism or any racial issue is still a challenge. Seeking to discuss, demystify white cultural attitudes, which are factually rationalized by a dominant and oppressive group, which nowadays have undergone modifications, is an obstacle to be faced, since, for the most part, discrimination is camouflaged.
