Abstract (sommario):
In previous papers [Spear and Young (2014, 2015)], we surveyed the origins, evolution, and dissemination of optimal growth, two-sector and turnpike models up to the early 1970s. Regarding subsequent developments in growth theory, a number of prominent observers, such as Fischer (1988), Stern (1991), and McCallum (1996), maintained that after significant progress in the 1950s and 1960s, economic growth theory “received relatively little attention for almost two decades” [Fischer (1988, p. 329)], and that “by the late 1960s early 1970s, research on the theory of growth more or less stopped” [Stern (1991, p. 259)]. Stern went on to say “the latter half of the 1980s saw a rekindling of growth theory, particularly in the work of Romer . . . and Lucas” (1991, p. 259), that is to say, in the form of “endogenous growth” models. McCallum, for his part, wrote (1996, p. 41), “After a long period of quiescence, growth economics has in the last decade (1986–1995) become an extremely active area of research.” Moreover, Brock and Mirman's (1972b) paper was the sole “extension” of Ramsey–Cass–Koopmans to a “stochastic environment” mentioned by McCallum (1996, 49).

Santy, Lorraine C., e Guido Guidotti. "Expression of a single gene produces both forms of skeletal muscle cyclic nucleotide-gated channels". American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism 273, n. 6 (1 dicembre 1997): E1140—E1148. http://dx.doi.org/10.1152/ajpendo.1997.273.6.e1140.

Abstract (sommario):
Cyclic nucleotide-gated cation channels in skeletal muscle are responsible for insulin-activated sodium entry into this tissue (J. E. M. McGeoch and G. Guidotti. J. Biol. Chem. 267: 832–841, 1992). These channels have previously been isolated from rabbit skeletal muscle by 8-bromoguanosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (8-BrcGMP) affinity chromatography, which separates them into two populations differing in nucleotide affinity [L. C. Santy and G. Guidotti. Am. J. Physiol. 271 ( Endocrinol. Metab. 34): E1051-E1060, 1996]. In this study, a polymerase chain reaction approach was used to identify skeletal muscle cyclic nucleotide-gated channel cDNAs. Rabbit skeletal muscle expresses the same cyclic nucleotide-gated channel as rabbit aorta (M. Biel, W. Altenhofen, R. Hullin, J. Ludwig, M. Freichel, V. Flockerzi, N. Dascal, U. B. Kaupp, and F. Hofmann. FEBS Lett. 329: 134–138, 1993). The entire cDNA for this gene was cloned from rabbit skeletal muscle and an antiserum to this protein produced. Expression of this cDNA produces a 63-kDa protein with cyclic nucleotide-gated channel activity. A similarly sized immunoreactive protein is present in sarcolemma. Purification of the expressed channels reveals that this single gene produces both native skeletal muscle channel populations.

ISBN 0-415-13647-4. £40.The books analysed in this review bear witness in different ways to a revival of historians' interest in the political history of ancien régime France which was highlighted by Peter Campbell in a recent review article in this journal. Campbell speculated that what Fernand Braudel all-so-dismissively called ‘event history’ (l'histoire événementielle) was making a comeback at the expense of Annaliste geo-historical analysis in the longue durée mode or mid-term conjunctural history rooted in social and economic change. A complementary way of looking at the phenomenon, which strikes the reader on engaging with the present crop of works, is to see current historiographical interests in political history as the revenge of Alfred Cobban, progenitor in the 1950s and 1960s of famous revisionist attacks on the socio-economic analyses of the Jacobino–Marxist school of French Revolutionary historiography adorned by Mathiez, Lefebvre, and Soboul. Cobban's broadsides were aimed not simply at some of the conceptual apparatus of the ‘Marxists’, but also sought to highlight empirical research as a corrosive solvent of what he viewed as the deterministic hyperbole of politically-influenced left-wing history.

Abstract (sommario):
Summary In 1995, 49 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico reported 7,877 cases of rabies in nonhuman animals and 4 cases in human beings to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 92% (7,247 cases) were wild animals, whereas 8% (630 cases) were domestic species. The total number of reported cases decreased 4.2% from that of 1994 (8,230 cases). Most of the decline was the result of 17.1% fewer reported cases of rabies in raccoons in areas of the Northeast, where rabies is now enzootic rather than epizootic. Exceptions to this decline were detected in states where the virus has only recently entered raccoon populations or where ongoing epizootics persist. States experiencing increasing epizootic activity associated with this variant include Maine (3 cases in 1993 to 101 cases in 1995), North Carolina (9 cases in 1990 to 466 cases in 1995), Rhode Island (1 case in 1993 to 324 cases in 1995), and Vermont (45 cases in 1993 to 179 cases in 1995). The raccoon variant of the rabies virus is now present in Alabama, Pennsylvania, Vermont, West Virginia, and all Atlantic Seaboard states from Florida to Maine. In Ohio, this variant, last detected in 1992 as a single case, was again detected in 1996. Epizootics of rabies in foxes in west central Texas and in dogs and coyotes in southern Texas attributable to canine variants continue, with this state reporting 137 rabid foxes, 55 rabid dogs, and 80 of the 83 cases in coyotes during 1995. The number of rabid bats (787) increased by almost 25%, with cases reported by 47 of the 48 contiguous states. Nationally, reported cases of rabies in cattle (136) and cats (288) increased by 22.5 and 7.9%, respectively, whereas cases in dogs (146) decreased by 4.6%. Cats continued to be the domestic animal most frequently reported rabid. The cases of rabies reported in human beings were all caused by viral variants associated with bats. Eighteen states and Puerto Rico reported decreases in rabies in animals in 1995, compared with 28 states and the District of Columbia in 1994. Hawaii was the only state that did not report a case of rabies in 1995.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper reexamines the relation between firm performance and board size using the data of Japanese companies. We find a significantly positive relation between firm performance and board size when the board size is small, but a significantly negative relation when the board size is large. Our finding is different from major empirical research such as the work by Yermack, Eisenberg et al. and Coles et al. [Yermack, D (1996). Higher market valuation of companies with a small board of directors. Journal of Financial Economics, 40, 185–211; Eisenberg, T, S Sundgren and MT Wells (1998). Larger board size and decreasing firm value in small firms. Journal of Financial Economics, 48, 35–54; Coles, JL, ND Daniel and L Naveen (2008). Boards: Does one size fit all? Journal of Financial Economics, 87, 329–356].The empirical results regarding the relation between firm performance and board size might depend strongly on the characteristics of firms used in a given analysis.

Abstract (sommario):
A video race analysis was conducted at the Atlanta Paralympic Games swimming competition. The purpose was to describe the contribution of clean swimming speed, as well as start, turn, and finish speed, to the total race performance in the four strokes for the men’s 100 m events. Start, turn, and finish times, as well as clean swimming speed during four race sections, were measured on videotapes during the preliminary heats (329 swims). Information on 1996 Olympic Games finalists (N = 16) was also available. In Paralympic swimmers, next to clean swimming speed, both turning and finishing were highly correlated with the end race result. Paralympic swimmers do start, turn, and finish slower than Olympic swimmers but in direct relation to their slower clean swimming speed. The race pattern of these components is not different between Paralympic and Olympic swimmers.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim in this study is to investigate the interface between semantics and pragmatics in relation to the use of the indexical demonstrative ‘haay’ ‘this-S.F.’ in Jordanian Arabic (JA). It is argued here that an analysis of meaning in relation to context-sensitivity inherent in the use of ‘haay’ can give evidence to the view that semantic and pragmatic processes can be distinguished from each other. I have found that the meaning of ‘haay’ consists of three distinct levels: linguistic, semantic, and pragmatic meaning. The denotational and conventional senses of ‘haay’ comprise its linguistic meaning, its semantic meaning is generated when any of the variables in the linguistic meaning is selected in relation to 'narrow context', the pragmatic meaning depends on relating the semantic meaning to an entity in the physical context of interaction. The results of this study support the view that the boundary between semantics and pragmatics can be distinctively demarcated. References Agha, A. (1996). Schema and superposition in spatial deixis. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background Studies of hospital discharge data and large observational cohorts show that the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) varies by race. We sought to determine the incidence of VTE in each of the following ethnic groups Caucasians, Africans, Asians, and Hispanics. Methods A systematic literature search strategy was used to identify potential studies in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CENTRAL using an OVID interface. The methodological quality of eligible studies was assessed according to Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. The primary outcome measure was to identify the incidence/prevalence of VTE of each ethnic group available for the study in the context of a population based study. Results Out of 3418 potential studies, 19 met our inclusion criteria (Table). Of these, 9 studies were population based studies: 5 reported VTE incidence per 100,000 person-years (PY), 2 measured the standardized incidence ratio, and 2 European studies assessed VTE rate according to country of origin but not ethnicity (data not shown). In addition, 7 studies measured the hospital incidence rate of VTE, and 3 assessed VTE prevalence. Data could not be pooled due to marked heterogeneity including varied periods of study. VTE incidence per 100,000 PY was found to be between 162 and 439 in Caucasians, 143 and 746 in Africans, 3.2 and 16.6 in Asians. Hospital incidence of VTE per 100,000 PY was found to be between 21 and 131 in Caucasians, 22 and 155 in Africans, 2 and 26 in Asians, 33.1 and 71 in American Indians/Alaskan Indians, and 9 in Hispanics. Conclusions Our findings suggest a wide variation in reported incidence rates for VTE among different ethnic groups, even within the same group. In general, studies in Asian populations suggest a lower incidence of VTE. A marked heterogeneity of study designs, population settings prevent drawing firm conclusions. A significant risk of bias cannot be excluded for several studies. Further studies assessing concurrently the risk of VTE among different ethnicities in the same geographical area are needed. Abstract (sommario):
PKS 1117+146 is a high power radio source (L327MHz=5.4 × 1026 W/Hz) identified with a galaxy of 20.1 red magnitude at z=0.362 (de Vries et al. 1995). At this redshift 1 mas ≃ 2.9 pc (H0 = 100 km/s–1Mpc–1). Based on the properties of the radio spectra, PKS 1117+146 is classified as a GigaHertz Peaked Spectrum source (GPS) (Stanghellini et al. 1990). The GPS are powerful but physically small (sub-galactic sizes) radio sources with turnovers in their radio spectra at v ≃ 1 GHz. They are supposed to be isotropically emitting radio sources confined by exceptional dense circumnuclear gas (O'Dea et al. 1991) or still relatively young (Fanti et al. 1990). PKS 1117+146 is also a low frequency variable (LFV) with no sign of variability at v > 1 GHz (Padrielli et al. 1987, Mitchell et al. 1994). The low frequency variability is caused by propagation effects in the interstellar medium of our Galaxy (Mantovani et al. 1990, Spangler et al. 1993). PKS 1117+146 was observed with VLBI global arrays at 608 MHz (Padrielli et al. 1991), at 327 MHz (Altschuler et al. 1995), and at 1667 MHz (Bondi et al. 1996). All the maps are in agreement showing a compact double structure with components separated by about 70 mas. Flux densities and separation of the two components derived from VLBI and MERLIN (see below) maps are listed in Table 1. The flux ratios of the two components from the VLBI observations are very similar, and the spectral index is relatively flat (α ≃ 0.3–0.4), even if the strong low frequency variability can introduce uncertainties. The similarity of the VLBI morphology and spectral properties of the two components suggested that 1117+146 could be a possible gravitational lens candidate prompting for higher frequency observations. We observed PKS 1117+146 with MERLIN at 22 GHz in March 1993. MERLIN observations reveal for the first time a weak central component with a total flux density of about 20 mJy (Fig.1). From Table 1 we can note that the P.A. between the components is constant at all the frequencies while the separation between the peak flux densities significantly increases at higher frequencies. This is the expected behaviour if the 2 components are 2 lobes with hot-spot at the outer edges. The MERLIN map at 22 GHz seems to rule out the possibility that the morphology of PKS 1117+146 is caused by gravitational lensing.

Abstract (sommario):
This article deals with a simultaneous abstract evolution equation. This includes a parabolic-hyperbolic phase-field system as an example which consists of a parabolic equation for the relative temperature coupled with a semilinear damped wave equation for the order parameter (see e.g., Grasselli and Pata [Adv. Math. Sci. Appl. 13 (2003) 443–459, Comm. Pure Appl. Anal. 3 (2004) 849–881], Grasselli et al. [Comm. Pure Appl. Anal. 5 (2006) 827–838], Wu et al. [Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 17 (2007) 125–153, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 329 (2007) 948–976]). On the other hand, a time discretization of an initial value problem for an abstract evolution equation has been studied (see e.g., Colli and Favini [Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 19 (1996) 481–494]) and Schimperna [J. Differ. Equ. 164 (2000) 395–430] has established existence of solutions to an abstract problem applying to a nonlinear phase-field system of Caginalp type on a bounded domain by employing a time discretization scheme. In this paper we focus on a time discretization of a simultaneous abstract evolution equation applying to parabolic-hyperbolic phase-field systems. Moreover, we can establish an error estimate for the difference between continuous and discrete solutions.

Abstract (sommario):
We introduce a new command, xtusreg, that estimates parameters of fixed-effects dynamic panel regression models under unequal time spacing. After reviewing the method, we examine the finite-sample performance of the command using simulated data. We also illustrate the command with the National Longitudinal Survey Original Cohorts: Older Men, whose personal interviews took place in the unequally spaced years of 1966, 1967, 1969, 1971, 1976, 1981, and 1990. The methods underlying xtusreg are those discussed by Sasaki and Xin (2017, Journal of Econometrics 196: 320–330).

Cimatoribus, Andrea A., e H. van Haren. "Estimates of the temperature flux–temperature gradient relation above a sea floor". Journal of Fluid Mechanics 793 (18 marzo 2016): 504–23. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/jfm.2016.112.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The relation between the flux of temperature (or buoyancy), the vertical temperature gradient and the height above the bottom is investigated in an oceanographic context, using high-resolution temperature measurements. The model for the evolution of a stratified layer by Balmforth et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 355, 1998, pp. 329–358) is reviewed and adapted to the case of a turbulent flow above a wall. Model predictions are compared with the average observational estimates of the flux, exploiting a flux estimation method proposed by Winters & D’Asaro (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 317, 1996, pp. 179–193). This estimation method enables the disentanglement of the dependence of the average flux on the height above the bottom and on the background temperature gradient. The classical N-shaped flux–gradient relation is found in the observations. The model and the observations show similar qualitative behaviour, despite the strong simplifications used in the model. The results shed light on the modulation of the temperature flux by the presence of the boundary, and support the idea of a turbulent flux following a mixing-length argument in a stratified flow. Furthermore, the results support the use of Thorpe scales close to a boundary, if sufficient averaging is performed, suggesting that the Thorpe scales are affected by the boundary in a similar way to the mixing length.

Abstract (sommario):
Pipeline construction on the Grey soils of the Canadian boreal plains, which have a thin Ah horizon, could have considerable impact on their properties and productivity. This study was conducted because the effects of pipeline installation on crop yield and biological properties of these soils have not been well-documented. Soil was sampled from a Grey Luvisol and a Dark Grey Solod prior to pipeline construction in 1991, and in each of the following 3 yr. The right-of-way (RoW) was divided into three zones: a road (or work) area used for vehicular traffic; a trench where the pipeline was buried; and a pile (or spoil) area where soil was stockpiled during construction. The RoW was cropped to barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in 1992 through 1994. Barley yield was low in 1992 (830–1120 kg ha−1), and near average (2050–3290 kg ha−1) in 1993 and 1994. Except for low shoot P concentration (1.1–1.3 mg g−1) in 1992, macronutrient concentrations (N, P and K) in barley tissues were within normal ranges. Soil organic carbon was reduced by 12–28% in all RoW areas in 1993 and 1994. Soil total N was reduced by 29–49% in all RoWs in 1992 and increased slightly from those levels in 1993 and 1994. Pipeline construction affected soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) in the three RoW areas differently, and the effect was not consistent from year to year. However, the average level of MBC was not adversely impacted. In 1994, soil phosphatase activity in the RoW zones tended to be lower as compared to pre-pipeline installation, particularly in the pile area of the Dark Grey Solod. It is concluded that although some soil biological properties were degraded by pipeline construction, and barley yield was reduced in 1992, crop production in the following 2 yr was not significantly affected. Key words: Barley, carbon, microbial biomass, nitrogen, phosphatase, pipeline

Abstract (sommario):
DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies was performed using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines for studies reporting on diabetes mellitus (DM) or metabolic syndrome (MetS) and kidney stone disease (KSD).ObjectiveTo examine the association between chronic hyperglycaemia, in the form of DM and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in the context of MetS and KSD.SettingPopulation-based observational studies. Databases searched: Ovid MEDLINE without revisions (1996 to June 2018), Cochrane Library (2018), CINAHL (1990 to June 2018), ClinicalTrials.gov, Google Scholar and individual journals including the Journal of Urology, European Urology and Kidney International.ParticipantsPatients with and without chronic hyperglycaemic states (DM and MetS).Main outcome measuresEnglish language articles from January 2001 to June 2018 reporting on observational studies. Exclusions: No comparator group or fewer than 100 patients. Unadjusted values were used for meta-analysis, with further meta-regression presented as adjusted values. Bias was assessed using Newcastle-Ottawa scale.Results2340 articles were screened with 13 studies included for meta-analysis, 7 DM (three cohort) and 6 MetS. Five of the MetS studies provided data on IGT alone. These included: DM, n=28 329; MetS, n=31 767; IGT, n=12 770. Controls: DM, n=5 89 791; MetS, n=1 78 050; IGT, n=2 93 852 patients. Adjusted risk for DM cohort studies, RR=1.23 (0.94 to 1.51) (p<0.001). Adjusted ORs for: DM cross-sectional/case-control studies, OR=1.32 (1.21 to 1.43) (p<0.001); IGT, OR=1.26 (0.92 to 1.58) (p<0.0001) and MetS, OR=1.35 (1.16 to 1.54) (p<0.0001). There was no significant difference between IGT and DM (cross-sectional/case-control), nor IGT and MetS. There was a moderate risk of publication bias. Statistical heterogeneity remained significant in adjusted DM cohort values and adjusted IGT (cross-sectional/case-control), but non-signficant for adjusted DM (cross-sectional/case-control).ConclusionChronic hyperglycaemia increases the risk of developing kidney stone disease. In the context of the diabetes pandemic, this will increase the burden of stone related morbidity and mortality.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42018093382

Abstract (sommario):
Laboratory scale vinification assays were carried out with musts of the Spanish Airén white variety from the 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993 vintages from Valdepeñas, Spain, which were fermented both with and without skins. The variables involved in the statistical functions that discriminated be tween wines of different vintages were magnesium, potassium, iron, absorbance at 320 nm, total acidity, succinic acid and the 3-methyl-1-butanol and 2-methyl-1-butanol ratio. The wines fermented with skins contained higher concentrations of methanol, proline, ethyl acetate, glycerol and ashes than did those fermented without skins. The sensory profile method showed a considerable im provement in the fruity flavor as a result of mild maceration with the skins during the first 48 hours of fermentation of Airén wines.

Those opposed to the proliferation of nuclear weapons saw previous arms races as having destabilized the international system at best and as having led ineluctably to war at worst. Their critics countered that arms races possessed the capacity to increase terror and so promote more effective deterrence.

Abstract (sommario):
329 Background: Penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is a disfiguring and deadly disease. US cancer registry reports a higher incidence in certain minority communities including those over-represented at LAC-USC. Human papilloma virus (HPV) infection is strongly associated with PSCC. This study examined correlations of HPV presence and subtype with PSCC patient clinicopathological variables. Methods: After IRB approval, a retrospective review of PSCC patients at LAC-USC between 1996-2010 was completed. HPV presence and genotype was detected from primary tumors of 33 patients by DNA amplification followed by reverse line blot hybridization. Associations with patient and tumor characteristics were examined by contingency analyses. Results: 20 (60.6%) patients were HPV+, and 85% of all HPV+ cases harbored at least one high-risk viral strain (80% of all positive cases had HPV 16, 5% HPV 31, 10% HPV 66). 20% of all positive cases harbored low-risk HPV 11; HPV strains 6 or 35 were not detected in any specimen. 3 patients were positive for multiple strains. Overall median age at diagnosis was 53 (range: 24-77) yrs. Median age was 56 yrs and 49 yrs for HPV+ and HPV- patients, respectively. HPV infection showed a trend towards being more prevalent in patients beyond the fifth decade of life, although this did not reach statistical significance (p=0.10). 22 (66.7%) patients were Hispanic; this ethnicity comprised 60% and 77% of HPV+ and HPV- cases, respectively (p=0.31). This cohort included Stage 0 (n= 1, n= 0), Stage 1 (n= 4, n=2), Stage 2 (n= 4, n= 4), Stage 3 (n=5, n= 1), and Stage 4 (n= 4, n= 5) HPV+ and HPV- patients, respectively. Neither HPV status nor presence of nodal metastasis was significantly associated with stage (p=0.50, p=0.52 respectively). Tumor grade was available for 30 (90.9%) cases; while HPV+ cases tended to have higher proportion of moderately-poorly differentiated tumors than HPV- cases (77.8% vs. 58.3%), this was not statistically significant (p=0.32). Conclusions: An overwhelming majority of HPV+ cases harbored at least one high-risk viral strain. Several interesting associations of HPV status with age and grade were noted, although the study was underpowered to show significance.

Abstract (sommario):
Machalski and Engels (1994) have drawn attention to the recent outburst in the extragalactic radio source 1308+328. We observed it with VLBI at 2.3 and 8.4 GHz in February 1995, using the EVN, and including antennas at Seshan, Kashima, Hartebeesthoek and Ny-Alesund, all of which provided long baselines. During these observations we switched every few minutes between 1308+328 and the nearby compact source 1308+326, 14 arcmin away. This allowed us to determine a precise relative separation between these sources at both frequencies using phase referencing techniques, and provided a useful comparison between source sizes. We found that the target source, 1308+328, is considerably more compact than the reference source 1308+326, the latter being resolved (correlated flux decreased by 50 %) at 8.4 GHz at 250 million wavelengths. In contrast, 1308+328 appears completely unresolved at this resolution (Fig 1), corresponding to a source size < 0.5 mas.

Abstract (sommario):
National Research Inst. of Agriculture of Uruguay defined garlic as an important crop because its potential for exportation. Plant population and N management have been studied since 1992. Plant population of 112, 250, 333 and 500 thousand plants/ha at rates of N at 0, 75, 150 and 225 kg·ha–1 were tested in 1992, 1993, and 1995. Drip irrigation and plastic mulch with populations from 240 to 960 thousand plants/ha in 1992 and from 236 to 586 plants/ha in 1993 were evaluated. Nitrogen rates of 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha, and application times were also tested with a population of 250 thousand plants/ha, in 1992 and 1993. Plant population of 240, 320 and 560 thousand plants/ha yielded 12,0; 12,4 and 14,2 t·ha–1 respectively. As plant population increased, bulb size decreased. Yield increased up to rate of N at 150 kg·ha–1.

Abstract (sommario):
In many countries, relationship between decentralization of government activities and the extent of rent extraction by private parties is an important element in the recent debate on institutional design. The topic of corruption was actively, openly and debated in Indonesia by government, its development partners, and a broadly based group of political and civil society leaders are engaged in meetings and exchange on a daily basis. In the ongoing debate on corruption a lot of attention is paid to the role of public sector salaries, particularly in the decentralization era. Based on this phenomenon, the authors want to analyze the relationship between corruption and decentralization. Using OSL model, we can find a very strong and consistent positive association between the two variables across a sample of region, thereby providing some support for theories of decentralization that emphasize its benefits. This association is robust to controlling for a wide range of potential sources of omitted variable bias as well as endogeneity bias. Keywords: Corruption, Decentralization, OSL Model Abstrak. Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Using the standard Craig and Gudmundsson method (W. A. Craig and S. Gudmundsson, p. 296-329, in V. Lorian, ed., Antibiotics in Laboratory Medicine, 1996) as a guideline for determination of postantibiotic effects (PAE), we studied a large series of growth curves for two strains of Legionella pneumophila. We found that the intensity of the PAE was best determined by using a statistically fitted line over hours 3 to 9 following antibiotic removal. We further determined the PAE duration by using a series of observations of the assay interval from hours 3 to 24. We determined that inoculum reduction was not necessarily the only predictor of the PAE but that the PAE was subject to the type and dose of the drug used in the study. In addition, there was a variation between strains. Only levofloxacin at five and ten times the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) resulted in a PAE duration of 4 to 10 h for both strains of L. pneumophila tested. Ciprofloxacin at five and ten times the MIC and azithromycin at ten times the MIC caused a PAE for one strain only. No PAE could be demonstrated for either strain with erythromycin or doxycycline. Using the presently described method of measuring PAE for L. pneumophila, we were able to detect differences in PAE which were dependent upon the L. pneumophila strain, the antibiotic tested, and the antibiotic concentration. We suggest the use of mathematically fitted curves for comparison of bacterial growth in order to measure PAE for L. pneumophila.

Abstract (sommario):
The incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) increased from 10.6% in 1976 through 1980, to 21.7% (1981 through 1985), and to 32.9% (1986 through 1990) in very low birth weight neonates (1500 g or less) admitted to the Vanderbilt Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, while there was a concurrent decline in incidence of neonatal death (NEOD) during the same periods (26.4%, 18.3%, and 15.9%, respectively). Population changes in risk factors (birth weight, sex, race, location of birth, gestational age, diagnosis of hyaline membrane disease, and 5-minute Apgar score) over time do not account for this increase. To estimate the proportion of the increase in BPD attributable to the concurrent decline in NEOD during these periods, separate logistic regression models for NEOD and BPD were calculated from patients born during 1976 through 1985. These results were used to predict the expected number of cases of NEOD and BPD during 1986 through 1990, assuming that the adjusted incidence of NEOD and BPD remained constant from 1976 through 1985, to 1986 through 1990. The increase in the combined outcome, NEOD/BPD, over the three time periods (34.2%, 36.1%, and 43.5%) remained statistically significant after adjustment for the risk factors listed above. During 1986 through 1990, the predicted number of NEOD was 83 more than the number observed, while the predicted number with BPD was 115 less than the number observed. If all 83 averted cases of NEOD during 1986 through 1990 had developed BPD, then 83 (72%) of the 115 excess cases of BPD could be attributed to averted NEOD. The approximate 95% confidence interval for this estimate was 58% to 87%. These results indicate that while most of the excess cases of BPD in 1986 through 1990 could be explained by neonates who previously would have died, there were still additional cases of BPD that were not explained by the risk factors included in this analysis.

Abstract (sommario):
Sharka, caused by the Plum pox virus (PPV), is the most detrimental viral disease of stone fruit trees worldwide. Two main groups of PPV isolates have been identified, PPV-M and PPV-D (1). Natural variability of Slovak PPV isolates in Prunus hosts has been recently evaluated (3). The PPV isolate BOR-3 was isolated in the summer of 1996 from a 5-year-old apricot tree, cv. VS 123/9, in an orchard in western Slovakia. The host apricot tree was propagated from seed; hence infection via aphid transmission from the immediate surroundings is highly probable. In order to retain its original properties, the isolate was transmitted by chip budding from a diseased tree to seedlings of Prunus persica, cv. GF 305. In contrast to other PPV isolates collected from the same location, infection of GF 305 with BOR-3 was either symptomless or produced only weak symptoms. On the other hand, sap-infected young seedlings of P. insititia × P. domestica St. Julien No. 2 presented leaf chlorotic spots and rings similar to those produced by other tested Slovak PPV isolates. Serological typing with group-specific MAbs (1) and restriction fragment length polymorphism of RT-PCR products amplified from the C terminus of the capsid protein (CP) gene demonstrated that BOR-3 is a member of PPV-M group (3). However, nucleotide (nt) sequence analysis of the P3-6K1 genomic region (GenBank accession AF357541) has shown a strong similarity with PPV-D group isolates (reaching 97%). To obtain more information, a 1846-nt long 3 genomic region encompassing the C-terminus of NIb, CP and 3 noncoding region (NCR) was subsequently sequenced (GenBank accession AY028309). The sequence comparison revealed that the BOR-3 isolate was the most identical to the PPV isolate ð6 (GenBank accession S57404) isolated more than 10 years ago in former Yugoslavia, which is about 550 km from the Slovak focus. The ð6 isolate is known to be the only PPV RNA recombinant at present (2). Nucleotide sequence identity in 3'NIb+CP+NCR region between BOR-3 and ð6 isolates reached >98%, contrary to 96% identity with PPV-M isolates (PS, SK68) and 88% identity with PPV-D isolates (Dideron, Rank). Further, the potential recombination site in the BOR-3 genome has been located in the C-terminus of NIb gene near nt position 8450 (numbered according to PPV-PS isolate, AJ243957). This site corresponds to the location of the recombination crossover identified in the PPV-ð6 isolate (2). Despite geographical and temporal distinctiveness of the two PPV isolates, an identical origin of ð6 and BOR-3 cannot be excluded. The hypothesis that these PPV isolates are the product of two independent recombination events at a recombination hot spot in the PPV genome situated near the C terminus of NIb gene also should be considered. Based on these data, the PPV BOR-3 isolate is a product of a natural homologous RNA recombination event between an M and D isolate. Evidence of homologous RNA recombination in this isolate significantly enriches current knowledge on the occurrence of recombination among potyviruses and emphasizes the role of RNA recombination in viral evolution and adaptation. This report indicates that occurrence of recombinants within PPV isolates infecting perennial crops might not be as rare as previously suggested (4). References: (1) T. Candresse et al. Abstract (sommario):
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is caused by a mutation of the β-globin gene (Ingram VM. Nature 180: 326–328, 1957), which triggers the polymerization of deoxygenated sickle hemoglobin (HbS). Approximately 100,000 SCD patients in the United States and millions worldwide (Piel FB, et al. PLoS Med 10: e1001484, 2013) suffer from chronic hemolytic anemia, painful crises, multisystem organ damage, and reduced life expectancy (Rees DC, et al. Lancet 376: 2018–2031, 2010; Serjeant GR. Cold Spring Harb Perspect Med 3: a011783, 2013). Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation can be curative, but the majority of patients do not have a suitable donor (Talano JA, Cairo MS. Eur J Haematol 94: 391–399, 2015). Advanced gene-editing technologies also offer the possibility of a cure (Goodman MA, Malik P. Ther Adv Hematol 7: 302–315, 2016; Lettre G, Bauer DE. Lancet 387: 2554–2564, 2016), but the likelihood that these strategies can be mobilized to treat the large numbers of patients residing in developing countries is remote. A pharmacological treatment to increase fetal hemoglobin (HbF) as a therapy for SCD has been a long-sought goal, because increased levels of HbF (α2γ2) inhibit the polymerization of HbS (Poillin WN, et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 90: 5039–5043, 1993; Sunshine HR, et al. J Mol Biol 133: 435–467, 1979) and are associated with reduced symptoms and increased lifespan of SCD patients (Platt OS, et al. N Engl J Med 330: 1639–1644, 1994; Platt OS, et al. N Engl J Med 325: 11–16, 1991). Only two drugs, hydroxyurea and l-glutamine, are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of SCD. Hydroxyurea is ineffective at HbF induction in ~50% of patients (Charache S, et al. N Engl J Med 332: 1317–1322, 1995). While polymerization of HbS has been traditionally considered the driving force in the hemolysis of SCD, the excessive reactive oxygen species generated from red blood cells, with further amplification by intravascular hemolysis, also are a major contributor to SCD pathology. This review highlights a new class of drugs, lysine-specific demethylase (LSD1) inhibitors, that induce HbF and reduce reactive oxygen species.

Abstract (sommario):
Receptor-mediated activation of heterotrimeric G proteins leading to dissociation of the Gα subunit from Gβγ is a highly conserved signaling strategy used by numerous extracellular stimuli. Although Gβγ subunits regulate a variety of effectors, including kinases, cyclases, phospholipases, and ion channels (Clapham, D.E., and E.J. Neer. 1993. Nature (Lond.). 365:403–406), few tools exist for probing instantaneous Gβγ-effector interactions, and little is known about the kinetic contributions of effectors to the signaling process. In this study, we used the atrial muscarinic K+ channel, which is activated by direct interactions with Gβγ subunits (Logothetis, D.E., Y. Kurachi, J. Galper, E.J. Neer, and D.E. Clap. 1987. Nature (Lond.). 325:321–326; Wickman, K., J.A. Iniguez-Liuhi, P.A. Davenport, R. Taussig, G.B. Krapivinsky, M.E. Linder, A.G. Gilman, and D.E. Clapham. 1994. Nature (Lond.). 366: 654–663; Huang, C.-L., P.A. Slesinger, P.J. Casey, Y.N. Jan, and L.Y. Jan. 1995. Neuron. 15:1133–1143), as a sensitive reporter of the dynamics of Gβγ-effector interactions. Muscarinic K+ channels exhibit bursting behavior upon G protein activation, shifting between three distinct functional modes, characterized by the frequency of channel openings during individual bursts. Acetylcholine concentration (and by inference, the concentration of activated Gβγ) controls the fraction of time spent in each mode without changing either the burst duration or channel gating within individual modes. The picture which emerges is of a Gβγ effector with allosteric regulation and an intrinsic “off” switch which serves to limit its own activation. These two features combine to establish exquisite channel sensitivity to changes in Gβγ concentration, and may be indicative of the factors regulating other Gβγ-modulated effectors.

Abstract (sommario):
REFERENCES Markov V. Abstract (sommario):
Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis is endemic in Finnish cattle. Feed contaminated with S. Infantis was distributed to cattle farms in May 1995. Following increased sampling, S. Infantis was detected on 242 farms in 1995. Molecular typing was used to differentiate the farms that were infected by the feed-related Infantis from those infected by other endemic strains. Twenty-three isolates from feed in 1995 and 413 from cattle (72 from 1992–4, 324 from 1995, 17 from 1996–7) were analysed. The feed-related Infantis was clonally related to the endemic infection by the ribotype, IS200-type and XbaI-profile. The feed isolates had a distinctive plasmid that appeared in pulsed-field gel electrophoresis as a 60 kb band when cleaved with XbaI or linearized by S1-nuclease. This plasmid appeared in cattle only since the outbreak and seemed stable on the follow-up farms. In addition to contact farms, the feedborne strain was found on 19% of the farms infected with S. Infantis in 1995 but not having bought suspected feedstuffs, possibly as secondary infections.

Abstract (sommario):
15-Oxoprostaglandin 13-reductase (PGR) has been purified to apparent homogeneity from pig lung. The enzyme was estimated to have a molecular mass of 36 kDa by both SDS/PAGE and non-denaturing PAGE, indicating that the enzyme is a monomer. 15-Oxo-PGE1, 15-oxo-PGE2 and 15-oxo-PGF2α were found to be substrates for the enzyme, whereas the corresponding 15-hydroxyprostaglandins were not. The reverse reaction, the oxidation of 13,14-dihydro-15-oxo-PGE1 to 15-oxo-PGE1, was not observed. Either NADH or NADPH could serve as a coenzyme. However, the Vmax with NADH was approx. 3-fold that with NADPH, while the Km for NADPH was approx. one-tenth that for NADH. Cloning of the cDNA was achieved by PCR and library screening. A 600 bp PCR product containing the sequences of three different tryptic peptides derived from purified PGR was used for cDNA library screening by plaque hybridization. A cDNA clone that contained the entire PGR coding sequence of 987 bp was obtained. The sequence codes for a protein of 329 amino acid residues with a calculated molecular mass of 35791 Da. Homology analysis indicated that the sequence is virtually identical with that of leukotriene B4 (LTB4) 12-hydroxydehydrogenase [Yokomizo, Ogawa, Uozumi, Kume, Izumi and Shimizu (1996) J. Biol. Chem. 271, 2844-2850]. Expression of this cDNA in Escherichia coli resulted in a protein exhibiting both PGR and LTB4 12-hydroxydehydrogenase activities. However, the specific activity of PGR with 15-oxo-PGE1 as a substrate was approx. 300-fold that of LTB4 12-hydroxydehydrogenase. These results indicate that the cloned cDNA codes for a protein with two different enzyme activities, with 15-oxoprostaglandins as the preferred substrates.

Abstract (sommario):
In this survey, 799 isolates of Phytophthora infestans collected from potato crops in Israel during 1983 to 2000 were analyzed for mating type and sensitivity to metalaxyl, and 324 were analyzed for race structure. The A2 mating type, first recorded in 1983, fully dominated the pathogen population from 1983 until 1991 (9 years). It was thereafter replaced by the A1 mating type, which dominated the population during 1993 to 2000. Metalaxyl-resistant isolates were first recorded in 1982. During 1983 to 1991, the majority of the isolates were resistant. Isolates with intermediate sensitivity (I) to this fungicide were first observed in 1993, when both A1 and A2 mating types occurred in the population. The proportion of I isolates gradually increased, reaching 39 to 41% in 1997 to 1998, and then declined to ≈15% in 1999 to 2000. Pathogenicity to nine potato differential cultivars was determined for 80 potato isolates collected in 1983 to 1991, to 11 potato differentials in 173 isolates collected in 1993 to 1998, and in 71 potato isolates collected in 1999 to 2000. The first population was composed of 5 races with race 1,3,4,7,8,10 predominating (76%), the second population was composed of 19 races with race 1,3,4,7,8,10,11 predominating (63%), and the third population exhibited 42 (34 new) races with no single predominating race. RG-57 DNA fingerprinting and allozymes loci assays of 23 isolates revealed that isolates collected during 1984 to 1986 belonged to the PO-57 lineage, whereas those collected during 1997 to 1999 belonged to the RFO-39 lineage. Among isolates collected during 1993 to 1995, two unreported DNA fingerprinting patterns were found. Severe late blight epidemics occurred in tomato crops during 1998 to 2000. Of 35 tomato isolates, 28 were A1 and only 7 were A2. Of these tomato isolates, 94% were sensitive to metalaxyl. Almost every isolate had a different race structure on the 11 potato differentials. When inoculated onto three tomato differential cultivars, tomato isolates showed a virulence much more enhanced than potato isolates. The data suggest the Israeli population of P. infestans has passed through three major genetic changes during the past 18 years: in 1983, 1993, and 1999. The recent change included host specialization to tomato.
