Bicilli (1879-1953) in the broad historical context. The author of the book is Mikhail Birman, the specialist in the field of Slavic and Balkan studies, who has created the original approach to the intellectual biography and the interpretation of the heritage of P. M. Bicilli, was a pioneer in the field of emigration culture studies. The aim of the paper is to review the new publication of the “patriarch” of this trend of historiography, which summaries his previous performance.

Przedmiotem publikacji jest postać wybitnego, zapomnianego lekarza płk. dr. Mieczysława Marxa (Marksa). W trakcie badań autorka starała się, jak najdokładniej odtworzyć jego życiorys, dokonując wnikliwej kwerendy w Centralnym Archiwum Wojskowym Wojskowego Biura Historycznego oraz w Państwowym Archiwum w Łodzi. Dużo cennych informacji oraz dokumentacji fotograficznej dostarczyła także sama rodzina pułkownika. W artykule zostały przedstawione losy płk. dr. Mieczysława Marxa (Marksa) od momentu jego narodzin w Brześciu nad Bugiem (29 listopada 1989 r.), poprzez okres nauki i studiów, kolejno w trakcie trwania I wojny światowej, aż po okres międzywojnia i po roku 1945. Postać płk. dr. Mieczysława Marxa (Marksa) jest ważna dla miasta Łodzi – to właśnie z nią związany był przez większość swojego życia. Pełnił ważne stanowiska wojskowe w Okręgu Korpusu nr IV w Łodzi, m.in. od 18 czerwca 1930 r. był Szefem Sanitarnym przy Okręgu Korpusu nr IV w Łodzi. Oprócz sprawowania stanowisk medycznych i wojskowych związany był także ze strażą pożarną. Od stycznia 1936 r. był komendantem Ochotniczej Straży Pożarnej w Łodzi. Jego losy w okresie II wojny światowej są słabiej znane, jednak wiadomo, że przebywał w Warszawie i w czasie Powstania Warszawskiego opiekował się rannymi i chorymi w szpitalu w Milanówku. W październiku 1944 r. przeniósł się do Radomia. Po wojnie powrócił do Łodzi.

This checklist highlights a gap in the knowledge of Notonectidae and a great necessity of works with diversity of backswimmers in Goiás.Lista de espécies e registros novos de Notonectidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Nepomorpha) do Estado de Goiás, BrasilResumo. A savanna brasileira, chamada de Cerrado, possui a maior riqueza de flora dentre as savannas mundiais, e o Estado de Goiás encontra-se dentro dos limites deste bioma. In this publication, Zeugophora annulata (Baly, 1873), Z. unifasciata (Jacoby, 1885), Z. hozumii Chûjô, 1953, Z. japonica Chûjô, 1951, Z. varipes (Jacoby, 1885), Z. chujoi Ohno, 1961, Z. flavonotata (Chûjô, 1935), and Z. gracilis unicolor Chûjô, 1958 are redescribed, with detailed illustrations of the male and female genitalia. Additionally, Z. nigricollis (Jacoby, 1885) is restored to a valid species from junior synonymy with Z. bicolor (Kraatz, 1879), and Z. cupka sp. nov., is described as a new species.

Nikolai Nikolaevich Evreinov (1879–1953) has never been accorded his due credit as one of the most original thinkers and practitioners of modern European theatre. The absence of a rigorous and extensive appraisal of Evreinov's vast creative output has undoubtedly blinded otherwise well-informed critics to the seminal importance of his ideas on the essence of theatre. While names like Stanislavsky, Meyerhold, Strindberg, Piscator, Brecht, Artaud, Craig, Appia, Reinhardt, Pirandello and even the lesser known Russians, Vakhtangov and Tairov have all become by-words in the history of experimental and innovative theatre, Evreinov has remained a shadowy figure.

Majoritairement publies dans la presse et les revues d'art entre 1909 et 1953, les ecrits que francis picabia redigea sur sa peinture, sont aussi multiples et contradictoires que le personnage. A la fois peintre et poete mais surtout polemiste convaincu, picabia a successivement rejete les avant-gardes qu'il avait contribue a creer. A bien des egards, cette attitude rappelle la passion fougueuse et l'indifference tranquille du "peintre de la vie moderne" que decrivait c harles baudelaire. Meme lorsqu'il se lance dans une peinture realiste, picabia se decrit comme un "genie isole" qui lutte heroiquement contre la decadence de son epoque. Quelque peu dandy et jouisseur amuse, il refuse d'etre moderne ou avant-gardiste, reactionnaire ou revolutionnaire. Malgre les lectures post-modernes qui en ont ete faites, les articles du "loustic" oscillent entre deux positions contradictoires, foncierement romantiques : la peinture se meurt mais le peintre est un bon vivant
Published for the most part in the press and art reviews between 1909 and 1953, the francis picabia's writings about his painting, are as multiple and contradictory as his character was. A painter as vell as a poet but above all assured polemicist, picabia rejected one after the other all the avant-gardes which he contributed to creating. In many way this attitude recalls the spirited passion and the tranquille indifference of "the painter of modern life" described by char les baudelaire. Even when he embarks on realistic painting, picabia describes himself as a "lonely genius", struggling a gainst the decadence of his times. A bit of a dandy and amused libertine, he refuses to be modern or avant-gardist, reactionary or revolutionary. Despite the recent post-modern or avant-gardist readings of his ottball's articles, the latter oscillate between two contradictory and fundamentaly romantic points of view : the painting is on its bed's death but the painter is very much alive

Une part importante de l'oeuvre de l'écrivain et publiciste breton Loeiz Herrieu (1879-1953) est consacré à la grande guerre : son journal de guerre - kamdro en ankeu (le tournant de la mort) - est une des oeuvres maîtresse de la littérature contemporaine en langue bretonne. Cependant, sans délaisser l'écrivain, c'est l'homme privé, peu connu, que cette thèse s'attache a cerner : caractère, personnalité, liens avec les siens, relations avec les autres soldats, mouvement des idées, visions personnelles et leçons de la guerre. . . Ceci au travers de l'analyse très détaillé de son courrier prive à son épouse (620 lettres) totalement inconnu en dehors du cercle familial restreint. Au-delà de la sincérité du soldat - largement attestée par la confrontation de son témoignage aux archives militaires, aux récits d'autres combattants proches de lui (origine sociale, niveau d'études, idées. . . )Et son adéquation parfaite aux critères du <> selon Norton Cru - l'analyse présente l'homme, l'époux, le père, le catholique, le paysan, le militant culturel breton face à la guerre - qu'il hait car elle dégrade l'homme - et au militarisme au quotidien - qu'il rejette au nom de la morale et de l'honnêteté. Ses lettres révèlent un être hors du commun, anime d'une vie intérieure intense, et qui, pour rester debout, refuse toute compromission avec les valeurs du monde qui l'entoure. The Breton writer and publicist, Loeiz Herrieu (1879-1953), devoted a great deal of his work to the first world war : his war journal +kamdro en ankeu ; (turning point of death)is one of the most important pieces of contemporary literature written in the Breton language. However, without disregard of his writing abilities, the main concern of this thesis is the man himself, his nature, his personality, his family ties, his relationship with other soldiers, the evolution of his ideas and his personal perceptions and experiences of war. . . This is achieved by a highly detailed analysis of his private mail to his wife (620 letters) kept so far safely within close family. Beyond the soldiers's honesty (largely justified by comparing his accounts with military archives and the accounts of other soldiers (with similar background, academic level, opinions. . . ) And by the fact that he met the criteria of a +good witness; as defined by Norton Cru), the analysis also reveals the man, husband, father, catholic, countryman and Breton cultural militant faced with the war (which he hates because it is degrading to mankind) and with day to day militarism (which he dismisses in the name of moral standards and honesty). His letters reveal an extraordinary man, driven by intense inner thoughts; in order to keep going he refuses to make any compromise with the world around him. His strong sense of duty and his total submission to god's will nurture his undying hopes of seeing Brittany and his family once again, and the triumph of law and justice, which are worthes he accepts suffering for. Staliniana is an eclectic genre of Russian literature of the Soviet period. It deals with the fictional image of I. V. Stalin and the impact of his life and politics on history. For several decades it was the core of socialist realist literature and Stalin's personality cult.
The first chapter discusses the phenomena of Stalin's personality cult in the context of the intellectual history of the post-revolutionary Soviet society in the 1920s and 1930s. Chapter two offers different classifications of a vast amount of fiction written on Stalin. The genesis and documented development of staliniana is discussed in the third chapter. Special attention is paid to the manipulations in the genre exercised by ideological and cultural authorities in the USSR from the 1920s to the 1970s. The fourth chapter discusses some aspects of staliniana in Western Europe as contrasted to Soviet literature. In the fifth chapter a detailed analysis of key elements of the codified literary image of Stalin is undertaken. Chapter six explores the folklore background of Stalin's cult and its interaction with the cult of V. I. Lenin. The final chapter offers an analysis of the development of the language used by Stalin as a fictional character in works of literature. This study uses the recently declassified materials from Soviet archives in order to demonstrate that staliniana was not only a key element of the Stalin cult but also a cornerstone of Soviet literature.

Ce mémoire constitue l'analyse des représentations de Staline dans le magazine américain Time entre 1939 et 1953. Cet intervalle historique voit une évolution des descriptions du dirigeant russe. De « dictateur » durant la période pré-1941, il devient soudainement un « chef de guerre adulé » à la suite de l'invasion allemande de l'Union soviétique. Avec la fin du conflit et la dégradation des relations américano-soviétiques qui mènent à la Guerre froide, il est plutôt décrit comme un « impérialiste » souhaitant étendre l'idéologie communiste partout sur le globe. En analysant plus de 300 articles répertoriés dans le magazine, nous avons noté que ces perceptions sont attribuables à deux réalités. D'abord, les aléas du contexte international, qui font du dirigeant de l'Union soviétique un allié de premier ordre durant la guerre alors qu'il devient l'ennemi numéro un avec la polarisation idéologique des États-Unis et de l'Union soviétique, semblent expliquer l'inconstance des descriptions examinées. Ensuite, il nous apparaît qu'Henry R. Luce, cofondateur du magazine, anticommuniste convaincu, influe grandement sur le regard critique que porte Time sur Staline.

Ce travail est fonde sur un ensemble de textes prives inedits rediges par le peintre amateur aixois elise chaumery de sorval (1879-1953) et conserves dans les archives de la famille. Deux journaux intimes, l'un tenu a dix-sept ans, et l'autre, de facon occasionnelle, de 1903 a 1933, decrivent l'evolution d'une jeune fille de "la societe" aixoise. Aussi cette etude s'attache-t-elle a montrer les influences culturelles et ideologiques de certains modeles litteraires en degageant les caracteristiques, a la fois originales et conventionnelles, d'une education bourgeoise a la fin du dix-neuvieme siecle. Si l'ecriture intime fut pour elise chaumery le seul moyen d'extorioriser une critique sociale qui ne pouvait se formuler publiquement elle entendait aussi exprimer les sentiments esthetiques ressentis lors des contacts reguliers avec l'art. Cependant, a l'age adulte, l'exercice de la peinture n'ayant pu apporter a cette artiste l'emancipation souhaitee, c'est a la famille, a son passe et a son histoire que celle-ci demande de donner sens a sa vie solitaire. Trois recits prennent alors le relais de l'ecriture diariste pour se constituer eux aussi, suivant des perspectives generiques diversifiees, en "ecritures du moi". On a analyse les themes recurrents de ces ecrits et fait apparaitre leur dimension non seulement ontologique mais esthetique. Les principaux objectifs de cette etude sont donc non seulement de definir le cadre historique, social et culturel dans lequel ces ecritures privees s'inserent, mais de prendre la mesure existentielle voire litteraire de cette volonte feminine d'ecrire, en montrant que l'ecriture mais aussi la peinture ont cherche, modestement, a relier une vie, une memoire et une oeuvre.

Depuis l'ouverture des archives soviétiques au début des années 1990, les historiens ont pu profiter de documents inédits leur permettant de restituer le fonctionnement du cercle du Kremlin durant la période stalinienne, notamment dans une perspective d'histoire politique. La présente recherche, elle, traite des rapports de pouvoir, sous l'angle du genre, au sein du Kremlin sous Staline, plus particulièrement dans le premier cercle autour de ce dernier. Ce microcosme représente pour l'historiographie un cas exemplaire d'un lebenswelt soviétique ou vie privée et vie politique s'entremêlent de manière permanente. Il s'agit de comprendre comment, dans ce cercle situé au centre du pouvoir, se construit et se reconstruit la différence de genre, alors même que le discours officiel du parti postule l'égalité des sexes comme étant acquise. L'attention est plus particulièrement portée sur quatre moments d'exclusions du groupe stalinien ou le genre est une catégorie d'analyse centrale : les exécutions de Nikolaï Boukharine et de Nikolaï Ejov, la déportation de Polina Jemtchoujina Molotova et l’auto-exclusion du couple Kliment et Ekaterina Vorochilov. Y sont reconstitués les présentations de soi genrées (masculinité et féminité) et les liens interindividuels, en appréhendant divers thèmes, comme l’expression des émotions, les pratique corporelles (par exemple la pilosité), la santé, la sexualité, l’alcoolisme, la chasse, les enfants, entre autres. Le matériel principal de cette recherche est constitué par les ego-documents des acteurs historiques : correspondances, journaux intimes, autobiographies, petits mots échangés ou zapiski, photographies
In the 1930’s, the Stalin regime’s politics, confronted by “gendered problematic”, are therefore as varied as the feminine and masculine models, which underlie them. The role of the Kremlin circle in setting up these policies is important, due to its central position in the soviet system. The aim of this research is to rebuild the power and domination relationships, from the gender point of view, within the Stalin’s Kremlin, especially in the first circle around him. By using a historical anthropology approach centralizing family and social connections between the members of a group, and taking into consideration the gender aspect, I am seeking to reconstruct the inter-individual links connecting these various protagonists and their gendered self-presentations. The corpus of documents consists in correspondences, personal diaries, self-criticisms and autobiographies, memoirs, informal notes and photos. More specifically from a gendered point of view, in my research four moments of exclusions are enlightening: the execution of Nikolai Bukharin; the execution of Nikolai Ezhov; the deportation of Polina Zhemchuzhina-Molotova; the gradual exclusion of the couple Kliment and Ekaterina Voroshilov. Some themes are analyzed: health, bodies (for example pilosity), sexuality, alcoholism, hunting, children, and s. O. This research therefore asks the question of extreme violence in Stalin’s circle by introducing a gender component. It also enlightens the personality of Stalin within his group. This work is therefore enable completing the picture of the functioning of the Kremlin circle under Stalin in a gender point of view

« Moi je ne suis rien, je suis Francis Picabia ». C'est dans cette tension entre exaltation et rejet du moi que l'artiste a indiqué sa position dans la modernité. Son refus de l'action collective s'est exprimé au cœur de la Grande Guerre dans une œuvre centrée non pas sur l'histoire ni sur des problèmes d'ordre plastique, mais sur le moi. Personnage conceptuel de l'avant-garde, ego est articulé à l'analyse que Sigmund Freud fit en 1915 de la mélancolie, entendue comme imitation pathologique du deuil et comme perte du moi. Ce travail s'efforce de réviser certaines des certitudes les mieux établies sur l'artiste - tels que son refus de la répétition et son goût de la contradiction - pour proposer de voir dans ego un acteur capital de l'histoire des formes modernes, producteur de ses propres ruptures. Couvrant une période qui va de l'orphisme de 1913 jusqu'à la peinture maximaliste des Monstres de 1924-1927, une première partie analyse le portrait, la tache et le nom propre comme trois « objets du moi » chez Picabia, en rupture avec la représentation traditionnelle du sujet et les codes auctoriaux. Une deuxième partie examine trois exemples de procédures du peintre : d'abord, avec l'omniprésence du rond dans son œuvre, ce signe d'un moi incertain s'appareille à une autre circularité, attribué à la mélancolie et à la manie. Puis, le rapport ambivalent de Picabia à la figure de Picasso est envisagé comme alternative à l'idée d'influence. Enfin, c'est à partir du remploi secret que l'artiste fit des images mécaniques que naît la réponse réactionnelle de Picabia face à la menace d'une mécanisation de l'art désavouée dans son discours, mais repérable partout dans l'œuvre
« I am nothing, I am Francis Picabia. » In this tension between exaltation and rejection of the self the artist signalled his position within modernity. His refusal of collective action expressed itself during the First World War in an oeuvre focused neither on history nor on formal problems, but on the self. The present study articulates the ego, a conceptual figure of the avant-garde, along the lines of Sigmund Freud's 1915 analysis of melancholy, understood as a pathological imitation of mourning and as a loss of self. The project, in tracking Picabia's key gestures, seeks to revise some of the best established certitudes about the artist - the refusal of repetition, for example, or the taste for contradiction - in order to reconsider the ego as a crucial actor in the modern history of forms, producing its own ruptures. The first section, extending from the orphic period of 1913 to the maximalist painting of 1924-1927 known as the Monstres, analyzes the portrait, the stain, and the proper name as three « objects of the self» breaking with traditional representation of the subject and authorial codes. A second section examines three examples of the painter's procedure : first, the omnipresence of the round form in his oeuvre as the sign of an uncertain self is paired with another circularity, that attributed to melancholy and mania. Next, the ambivalent relation of Picabia to Picasso is envisaged as an alternative to the idea of influence. Finally, and decisively, the artist's covert re-use of mechanical images led to his reactional response to the threat of a mechanization of art explicitly disavowed by Picabia but present everywhere in the work

Cette thèse est une étude du commissariat du peuple aux affaires étrangères (NKID) entre 1930 et 1939, période où Litvinov est le chef de la diplomatie. S'inscrivant dans le champ des études historiques sur le processus de décision en politique étrangère, elle s'appuie, grâce à l'ouverture des archives à Moscou, sur une documentation nouvelle qui permet d'analyser de manière plus précise qu'avant les relations de travail existant entre le NKID et les dirigeants du parti. Elle permet aussi d'évaluer la place qu'avait l'appareil diplomatique par rapport au Komintern ou à d'autres institutions soviétiques comme les commissariats au commerce extérieur et à la défense. Cette étude de cas recoupe la question plus vaste du rôle que peuvent jouer les appareils gouvernementaux dans un état-parti à tendance totalitaire. Ces problématiques sont abordées à travers l'histoire de la politique extérieure de l'URSS en Europe. A des moments clé comme l'adhésion de l'URSS à la politique de sécurité collective en décembre 1933, son entrée à la SDN en septembre 1934 ou la conclusion du pacte d'assistance mutuelle avec la France en mai 1935, l'analyse du processus de décision montre l'influence acquise par Litvinov auprès de Staline ainsi que les fonctions d'information et de propagande dévolues aux ambassades soviétiques en Europe et aux délégués de l'URSS à Genève. Ces diplomates soviétiques possèdent des caractéristiques personnelles qui favorisent l'intégration de l'URSS au "concert européen". A partir de la fin 1936 en revanche, dans le contexte de la grande terreur et dans un climat de guerre imminente, le NKID, forge par Litvinov, s'affaiblit avant de disparaitre. Face à des dirigeants, revenant à un anti-impérialisme indifférencié et à une politique isolationniste, les options de Litvinov sont contestées, tandis que Staline, s'efforçant de faire disparaitre toute parcelle d'autonomie, utilise les purges pour prendre en main, sans plus d'intermédiaire, l'outil diplomatique
This thesis is a study of the people's commissariat for foreign affairs (NKID) between 1930 and 1939, when litvinov is the chief of the diplomacy. Belonging to the historical field of studies on the decision-making process, it is based, thanks to the opening of archives in moscow, on a new documentation which offers the possibility to analyse more precisely than before the working relations between NKID and the party's leading circles. It makes it also possible to evaluate the place of the diplomatic institution in regard to the comintern but also to soviet institutions, such as commissariats for foreign trade and for defense. Underlying this study-case, rests the larger question of the role played by higher administrations inside a party-state with totalitarian tendencies. These issues are treated throughout history of soviet union's foreign policy in Europe. At some key-moments, such as the soviet decision to follow a policy of collective security in december 1933, ussr's decision to join the league of nations in september 1934 or the signature of the mutual assistance pact with france in may 1935, the analysis of the decision-making process shows the influence gained by Litvinov amongst soviet leaders in the diplomatic field, and gives a better understanding of the job asked to soviet embassies in Europe and to soviet delegates in Geneva, charged of information and propaganda. Soviet diplomats have a profile allowing a good adaptation and a successful integration of the ussr in the "concert europeen". But, after the end of 1936, in the context of the great terror and a pre-war atmosphere, the NKID, forged by litvinov, becomes weaker, before disappearing totally. Facing party leaders coming back to the theory of undifferentiated anti-imperialism and to an isolationnist policy, Litvinov's projects become questioned, while stalin, doing his best to eliminate any scrap of autonomy, uses the purges to take control over diplomacy with no more go-between

Myxoedema coma is the extreme expression of severe hypothyroidism and fortunately is quite rare. The first reported case appears to have been in 1879 by Ord from St Thomas’s Hospital, London. Two other patients who died in a hypothyroid coma were reported in 1888 in the proceedings of the Clinical Society of London (1). The next cases in the literature appeared in 1953 (2, 3), and some 300 cases have since been reported. Epidemiological data indicate an incidence rate of 0.22/1 000 000 per year (4). The most common presentation of the syndrome is in hospitalized elderly women with long-standing hypothyroidism, with 80% of cases occurring in women over 60 years of age. However, myxoedema coma occurs in younger patients as well, with 36 documented cases occurring during pregnancy (5, 6). In spite of early diagnosis and treatment, the mortality rate may be as high as 40–60%.

This chapter traces the career and experiences of Arthur Kenlis Maxwell, 11th Baron Farnham (1879-1957) of county Cavan as a southern loyalist in pre and post-independent Ireland. Up to 1920 he was a prominent representative of southern unionism and his impassioned speeches during the debate on the Government of Ireland bill convey the sense of abandonment and betrayal felt by many southern loyalists. In April 1922 he and his family left Farnham House for England. Unlike many of his peers who made similar journeys, Farnham returned to his ancestral home in 1926 and enjoyed a relatively peaceful and easy transition back into life there. The latter part of the chapter illustrates Farnham’s personal experience of adaptive coexistence and the complexity of southern unionist identities and loyalties in this ‘new’ Ireland. Personal connections made prior to his departure, his interest in agricultural improvement and promotion of various sports in Cavan had meant that he had cultivated a wide and diverse range of friends and networks which he could tap into on return. Although he never formally entered politics in the Irish Free State, Farnham remained an important leadership figure within the Protestant community in Cavan and further afield and symbolically maintained displays of his loyalism attending both the 1937 and 1953 coronations in London.

Study of Mongolian literature at St. Petersburg University began in the 19th century. In 1855, as part of the reorganization of Oriental studies in Russia, Faculty of Oriental Languages was transferred from Kazan to St. Petersburg. A. M. Pozdneev (1851–1920) was the first to systematically study Mongolian literature at the department. Academician B. Ya. Vladimirtsov (1884–1931) significantly developed and deepened research in the field of Mongolian literature. An outstanding academician S. A. Kozin (1879–1956) made a huge contribution to the study of Mongolian literature. From 1937 to 1976 T. A. Burdukova (1912–1987) taught at the Department of Mongolian Philology. In 1953, after completing her postgraduate studies at the Department of Mongolian Philology, L. K. Gerasimovich (1923–2015) began her teaching career. In 1987, M. P. Petrova (born 1964) was hired as an assistant at the Department of Mongolian Philology. For more than half a century of the existence of the Faculty of Asian and African Studies within the walls of St. Petersburg University, the Department of Mongolian Philology (later — department of Mongolian Studies and Tibetology) has developed a strong tradition of studying and teaching new and latest Mongolian literature. And today we can talk about the presence at St. Petersburg State University of its own scientific school of research into the history of the development of literature of the Mongolian-speaking peoples of the world.
