Disertacijoje nagrinėjama pilietiškumo samprata ispanų kilmės XVI amžiaus Lietuvos lotyniškosios literatūros autoriaus Petro Roizijaus (Pedro Ruiz de Moros, ~1505 –1571) kūryboje. Toks aspektas leidžia žvelgti į kūrybą šiuolaikinio skaitytojo akimis, apibrėžti autoriaus kūrybos santykį su skirtingų laikų visuomenėmis. Teoriniu darbo pagrindu pasirinkti recepcijos teorijos Hanso Roberto Jausso svarstymai jo literatūrinio lūkesčių horizonto sąvoka, teksto analizei konkrečiose darbo dalyse naudoti intertekstualumo teoretikų pastebėjimai. Disertacijoje atskirai nagrinėjami Roizijaus poetiniai ir teisiniai tekstai, bandant ieškoti juose pilietiškumo raiškos. Poetiniuose tekstuose Roizijus, norėdamas paveikti skaitytoją, kreipia itin didel�� dėmesį į detalų ir konkretų vaizdavimą, taigi čia valstybės – piliečio santykis atsiskleidžia didiko herojaus, „verto tėvo ir tėvynės“ paveiksle. Teisiniame Roizijaus veikale Lietuvos sprendimai autorius atskleidžia pilietiškumo sampratą daugiau iš filosofinės pusės. Čia civis ir civitas sąvokos turi jungčių tiek su antikiniu romėnų pasauliu, kurį atveria intertekstinės struktūros, tiek su Lenkijoje ir Lietuvoje įprasta ir Lietuvos statutuose pabrėžiama piliečio kaip gyventojo traktuote. Pilietiškumas gali tapti elementu, kuris priartina mūsų dienų žvilgsnį prie istoriniu tapusio diskurso. This work is mainly to investigate the concept of citizenship in the creation of Petrus Royzius (Pedro Ruiz de Moros, ~1505 –1571). This poet is a creator of the 16th c. Latin poetry in Lithuania. The aspect like this allows the observation towards the literature with the contemporary reader‘s eyes and determines the relationship between the author and the society of different époques. As a theoretical base of the investigation we have chosen a reception theory discussed by Hans Robert Jauss and his conception of literary horizon of expectations. The theoretical considerations of intertextuality there were used for the text analysis in the concrete places of the text. The poetical texts are considerable different from the judicial ones, while looking for the expression of citizenship in them. Royzius is very attentive for the detailed and concrete images or metaphors in order to make an influence on the reader; so the state–citizen relation reveals through the illustration of a noble hero, who is „worth his father and his fatherland“. The author reveals more philosophical conception of citizenship in his work The Lithuanian Decisions (Decisiones Lituanicae). The origin of Civis and Civitas are connected both with the antique Roman world, which is revealed by the intertextual structures, and the treatment of the citizen as an inhabitant, common in Lithuanian Statutes. In dieser Dissertation werden algorithmische Verbesserungen und Varianten für Simulationen der zwei-Flavor Gitter QCD mit dynamischen Fermionen studiert. Der O(a)-verbesserte Dirac-Wilson-Operator wird im Schrödinger Funktional mit einem Update des Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC)-Typs verwendet. Sowohl der Hermitische als auch der nicht-Hermitische Operator werden betrachtet. Für den Hermitischen Dirac-Wilson-Operator untersuchen wir die Vorteile des symmetrischen gegenüber dem asymmetrischen Gerade-Ungerade-Präkonditionierens, wie man von einem mehr Zeitskalen-Integrator profitieren kann, sowie die Auswirkungen der kleinsten Eigenwerte auf die Stabilität des HMC Algorithmus. Im Fall des nicht-Hermitischen Operators leiten wir eine (semi)-analytische Schranke für das Spektrum her und zeigen eine Methode, um Informationen über den spektralen Rand zu gewinnen, indem wir komplexe Eigenwerte mit dem Lanczos-Algorithmus abschätzen. Diese spektralen Ränder erlauben es, Vorzüge des symmetrischen Gerade-Ungerade-Präkonditionierens oder den Effekt des Sheikholeslami-Wohlert-Terms für das Spektrum des nicht-Hermitischen Operators zu zeigen. Unter Verwendung der Informationen des spektralen Randes konstruieren wir angepasste, komplexe, skalierte und verschobene Tschebyschow Polynome zur Approximation des inversen Dirac-Wilson-Operators. Basierend auf diesen Polynomen entwickeln wir eine neue HMC-Variante, genannt nicht-Hermitischer polynomialer Hybrid Monte Carlo (NPHMC). Sie erlaubt, vom Importance Sampling unter Kompensation mit einem Gewichtungsfaktor abzuweichen. Zudem wird eine Erweiterung durch Anwendung des Hasenbusch-Tricks abgeleitet. Erste Größen der Leistungsfähigkeit, die die Abhängingkeit von den Eingabeparametern als auch einen Vergleich mit unserem Standard-HMC zeigen, werden präsentiert. Im Vergleich der beiden ein-Pseudofermion-Varianten ist der neue NPHMC etwas besser; eine eindeutige Aussage im Fall der zwei-Pseudofermion-Variante ist noch nicht möglich.
In this thesis algorithmic improvements and variants for two-flavor lattice QCD simulations with dynamical fermions are studied using the O(a)-improved Dirac-Wilson operator in the Schrödinger functional setup and employing a hybrid Monte Carlo-type (HMC) update. Both, the Hermitian and the Non-Hermitian operator are considered. For the Hermitian Dirac-Wilson operator we investigate the advantages of symmetric over asymmetric even-odd preconditioning, how to gain from multiple time scale integration as well as how the smallest eigenvalues affect the stability of the HMC algorithm. In case of the non-Hermitian operator we first derive (semi-)analytical bounds on the spectrum before demonstrating a method to obtain information on the spectral boundary by estimating complex eigenvalues with the Lanzcos algorithm. These spectral boundaries allow to visualize the advantage of symmetric even-odd preconditioning or the effect of the Sheikholeslami-Wohlert term on the spectrum of the non-Hermitian Dirac-Wilson operator. Taking advantage of the information of the spectral boundary we design best-suited, complex, scaled and translated Chebyshev polynomials to approximate the inverse Dirac-Wilson operator. Based on these polynomials we derive a new HMC variant, named non-Hermitian polynomial Hybrid Monte Carlo (NPHMC), which allows to deviate from importance sampling by compensation with a reweighting factor. Furthermore an extension employing the Hasenbusch-trick is derived. First performance figures showing the dependence on the input parameters as well as a comparison to our standard HMC are given. Comparing both algorithms with one pseudo-fermion, we find the new NPHMC to be slightly superior, whereas a clear statement for the two pseudo-fermion variants is yet not possible.

Im Rahmen einer vergleichenden retrospektiven Analyse wurden die präoperativen und intraoperativen Einflussfaktoren auf den frühen und mittelfristigen postoperativen Verlauf nach Fontan-Operation untersucht und die Ergebnisse der totalen cavopulmonale Anastomose mit einem intraatrialen lateralen Tunnel (LTFO, n = 25) und mit einem extrakardialen Kunststoff-Konduit (ECFO, n = 25) gegenüber gestellt. Postoperativ wurde nach ECFO ein komplikationsärmerer früher Verlauf mit kürzerer maschineller Beatmung und signifikant geringerer Inzidenz für frühe und mittelfristige Arrhythmien als nach LTFO beobachtet. Im frühen postoperativen Verlauf waren die schnellste Extubation und Entlassung bei den ECFO-Patienten möglich, bei denen keine Kardioplegie verwendet wurde. Unabhängige Risikofaktoren nach multivariater Analyse waren die Dauer der Kardioplegie in Bezug zu den unmittelbaren postoperativen Komplikationen, eine LTFO - sowohl für Tachy- als auch für Bradyarrhythmien - und die Inzision in die cavoatriale Verbindung bei LTFO in Bezug zu Bradyarrhythmien mit der Notwendigkeit einer Schrittmacherimplantation. Durch Vermeidung von Kardioplegie und chirurgischer Schaffung eines lateralen Tunnels sowie Verkürzung des kardiopulmonalen Bypasses bei ECFO werden vor allem die postoperativen Arrhythmien reduziert und es ist wahrscheinlich möglich, den postoperativen Verlauf bei Patienten mit einem durch eine langwierige Zyanose und durch Volumenbelastung vorbeschädigten singulären Ventrikel zu verbessern. Eine prospektive langfristige Vergleichsstudie mit einer größeren Patientenzahl ist notwendig, um die Frage zu beantworten, ob eine signifikante Minderung der spätpostoperativen Komplikationen und eine Verbesserung der Lebenserwartung der Patienten mit univentrikulärer Physiologie durch eine korrekt geplante und optimal durchgeführte extrakardiale Modifikationen der Fontan-Operation erreicht werden kann.
The preoperative and intraoperative risk factors for early and mid-term postoperative course after Fontan operation were analyzed and results after total cavopulmonary connection with lateral intraatrial tunnel (LTFO, n = 25) and with extracardiac conduit (ECFO, n = 25) were compared retrospectively. The early postoperative course after ECFO was better with shorter duration of mechanical ventilation. Lower incidence of arrhythmias was observed after ECFO compared to LTFO both early postoperatively and during mid-term follow-up. Patients after ECFO, in whom cardioplegia was not used intraoperatively, had the shortest duration of mechanical ventilation and of the hospital stay. Multivariate analysis revealed duration of cardioplegia as an independent risk factor for early postoperative complications, LTFO as a risk factor for tachyarrhythmias and incision into the cavoatrial junction during LTFO as a risk factor for the bradyarrhythmias requiring pacemaker implantation. With the avoidance of cardioplegia and intracardiac surgery and shorter cardiopulmonary bypass times during ECFO, postoperative arrhythmias could be reduced. Further, the early postoperative course in patients with univentricular physiology who have had cyanosis and ventricular volume overload for a long time seems to be better after extracardiac modification of Fontan operation. To investigate whether late complications are reduced by optimal extracardiac Fontan operation and whether life expectancy in patients with single ventricle is improved, long-term prospective comparative follow-up studies are needed.

Diese Dissertation stellt ein strukturelles ökonometrisches Modell der Nachfrage mit direkten Netzwerkeffekten vor. Der strukturelle Ansatz ermöglicht es, den Umfang von Netzwerkeffekten and Netwerkkompatibilität zu identifizieren. Nach unserem Wissen ist es das erste Modell, das diese Identifikation im Falle von direkten Netzwerkeffekten ermöglicht. Gleichzeitig ist es der erste Versuch, den Umfang von Netzwerkkompatibilität mit ökonometrischen Methoden zu bestimmen. Das Modell wird dann angewandt, um die Nachfrage von Mobilfunkdienstleistungen, als auch den Zusammenhang zwischen ISO 9000 Normierung und internationalem Handel zu untersuchen. Die Schätzungsergebnisse führen zu interessanten wirtschaftspolitischen Folgerungen.
This thesis introduces a structural econometric model of demand exhibiting direct network effects. The structural approach we follow allows us to identify the extent of network effects and compatibility between competing networks. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first model that facilitates the identification in the case of direct network effects. At the same time, it is the first attempt to assess the degree of compatibility in an econometric framework. The model is then applied to investigate demand for mobile telecommunications service and the link between adoptions of ISO 9000 standard and international trade. The estimation results allow us to formulate some interesting policy conclusions.

Abstract (sommario):

Im Rahmen einer experimentellen Vergleichsstudie zweier bildwandlergestützter Navigationssysteme wurde die 3D-bildwandlergestützte Navigation mit der 2D-bildwandlergestützten Navigation zur Pedikelschraubenplatzierung am Modell getestet. Neben der Präzision der Bohrungen in einem postoperativen CT wurden Bildqualität, Genauigkeit des 3D-Scans, Planbarkeit und Umsetzung der Bohrungen bewertet und verglichen. Mit der 3D- Bildwandler- Navigation wurden 38 der 40 Bohrungen exakt platziert (95%). Eine Planung wurde durch einen Softwarefehler der Alpha-Version auf dem Monitor falsch wiedergegeben. Bei einer weiteren Bohrung wurde der Bohrer verkantet, wodurch Bildschirmdarstellung und Realität voneinander abwichen. Daher kam es in einem Fall zu einer lateralen Perforation der Kortikalis im Bereich des Pedikels, im anderen zu einer kaudalen Perforation. Mit der 2D- Bildwandler- Navigation konnten alle 40 Schrauben ohne Pedikelperforation platziert werden. Zwei dieser Schrauben wurden durch die ventrale Kortikalis gebohrt. Beide Verfahren überzeugten durch hohe Präzision und Zuverlässigkeit. 3 der 4 Fehlplatzierungen waren Anwender einer Software bedingt. Eine optimierte Software und verbesserte Instrumente werden diese Fehlerquote weiter reduzieren. Voraussetzung für die 2D-bildwandlergestützten Navigation sind eine gute Bildqualität sowie normale anatomische Gegebenheiten für standardisierte Projektionen. Die neue 3D-bildwandlergestützter Navigation kombiniert die Vorteile der 2D-bildwandlergestützter Navigation und der CT- basierten Navigation mit einer Verringerung der Strahlenbelastung durch den Wegfall des präoperativen CT`s und somit der Einsatzmöglichkeit im akuten Notfall sowie nach intraoperativen Repositionsmanövern. Da kein Matching erforderlich ist, wird insbesondere bei traumatischer Verletzung oder tumorbedingter Veränderung der dorsalen Wirbelstrukturen ein großer Vorteil zur CT- basierten Navigation erwartet. Aufgrund der universellen Einsatzmöglichkeiten eines Bildwandlers wird für diese neue Technologie ein breites Indikationsspektrum angenommen.
An experimental study to compare 2D- and 3D- Computer-Assisted Fluoroscopic Navigation for pedicle screw placement. Each system was evaluated by a post-operative CT and included the comparison of the palpation of the pedicular canal, the image quality and the accuracy of planning and performance. For this purpose 40 screws have been set to 9 models of lumbar spine. Using the 3D-flouroscopy based navigation 38 from 40 (95%) drillings were placed correctly. One mistake was caused by an error of the navigation-software. The second mistake was due to a drilling mistake, the drill was not shown correctly on the monitor because the drill has been canted. Using the 2D-flouroscopy based navigation all screws could be placed correctly at the pedicle, but two times the corpus has been perforated to ventral. Both techniques are precise and reliable. 3 out of 4 mistakes were caused by incorrect handling the instrument. The other mistake happened because of a software-error. If the software and the instruments will be optimised, the amount of mistakes will be reduced in the future. In case of the 2D-flouroscopy based navigation sufficient image quality, normal anatomical structures and defined projections are required. The new 3D-flouroscopy based navigation combines the benefit of 2D-flouroscopy based navigation and CT-based navigation by reducing the radiation exposure and the preoperative planning time. Therefore, this technique is suitable for use in an emergency or intraoperative repositions. Because no matching-procedure is necessary for CT-based navigation, we expect advantages especially in therapy of traumatic injuries or changes at the dorsal structures of spine caused by tumour. Furthermore, the use of fluoroscopic based navigation extends the range of applications/the spectrum of indication for this new technology.

Der zukünftige Linearbeschleuniger (International Linear Collider - ILC) wird für die Teilchenforschung im Energiebereich bis zu einem Tera-Elektronenvolt (TeV scale) entwickelt. In dieser Arbeit wird der Entwurf des inneren Vorwärtsbereichs (Very Forward Region) eines Detektors füur diesen Beschleuniger beschrieben. Das Beam-Kalorimeter - eines der zwei elektromagnetischen Kalorimeter, die hier angeordnet sind - ist Gegenstand dieser Arbeit. Das Beam-Kalorimeter muss eine gute Hermetizität für hochenergetische Elektronen, Positronen und Photonen bis hinab zu sehr kleinen Polarwinkeln gewährleisten. Es dient für die schnelle Strahldiagnose und als Abschirmung des inneren Detektors gegen rückgestreute Beamstrahlungsreste und Synchrotronstrahlung. Als eine mögliche Technologie für das Beam-Kalorimeter wird eine Sandwich-Anordnung aus Diamantsensoren und Wolfram- Absorberplatten betrachtet. Es werden detaillierte Simulationen einer solchen Anordnung durchgeführt. Die Nachweiseffektivität und die Energie- sowie Winkelauflösung für elektromagnetische Schauer werden untersucht. Im Ergebnis der Simulationsrechnungen wird nachgewiesen, dass die vorgeschlagene Anordnung die Anforderungen an ein Beam-Kalorimeter erfüullt. Zusätzlich werden Untersuchungen an polykristallinem Diamantmaterial, hergestellt mittels Abscheidung aus der Dampfphase (Chemical Vapour Deposition - CVD), durchgeführt, um dessen Eigenschaften als Sensormaterial für ein Beam-Kalorimeter zu ermitteln. Die Ergebnisse der Messungen von Mustern verschiedener Hersteller werden dargestellt diskutiert.
The International Linear Collider (ILC) is being designed to explore particle physics at the TeV scale. The design of the Very Forward Region of the ILC detector is considered in the presented work. The Beam Calorimeter - one of two electromagnetic calorimeters situated there - is the subject of this thesis. The Beam Calorimeter has to provide a good hermeticity for high energy electrons, positrons and photons down to very low polar angles, serve for fast beam diagnostics and shield the inner part of the detector from backscattered beamstrahlung remnants and synchrotron radiation. As a possible technology for the Beam Calorimeter a diamond-tungsten sandwich calorimeter is considered. Detailed simulation studies are done in order to explore the suitability of the considered design for the Beam Calorimeter objectives. Detection efficiency, energy and angular resolution for electromagnetic showers are studied. At the simulation level the diamond-tungsten design is shown to match the requirements on the Beam Calorimeter performance. Studies of polycrystalline chemical vapour deposition (pCVD) diamond as a sensor material for the Beam Calorimeter are done to explore the properties of the material. Results of the measurements performed with pCVD diamond samples produced by different manufacturers are presented.

Mit der aktuellen Überarbeitung der Sprache SDL (Specification and Description Language) der ITU-T wurde die semantische Fundierung der formalen Definition dieser Sprache vollständig überarbeitet; die formale Definition basiert nun auf dem Kalkül der Abstract State Machines (ASMs). Ebenfalls neu definiert wurde das um objekt-orientierte Konzepte erweiterte Datentypsystem. Damit musste eine formale semantische Fundierung für diese neuen Konzepte gefunden werden. Der bisher verwendete Kalkül ACT.ONE sollte nicht mehr verwendet werden, da er schwer verwendbar, nicht implementierbar und nicht auf Objektsysteme erweiterbar ist. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die Prinzipien einer formalen Sprachdefinition dargelegt und die Umsetzung dieser Prinzipien für die Sprache SDL-2000 vorgestellt. Dabei wird erläutert, dass eine konsistente Sprachdefinition nur dadurch erreicht werden konnte, dass die Definition der formalen Semantik der Sprache parallel mit der Entwicklung der informalen Definition erfolgte. Dabei deckt die formale Sprachdefinition alle Aspekte der Sprache ab: Syn-tax, statische Semantik und dynamische Semantik. Am Beispiel der Datentypsemantik wird erläutert, wie jeder dieser Aspekte informal beschrieben und dann formalisiert wurde. Von zentraler Rolle für die Anwendbarkeit der formalen Semantikdefinition in der Praxis ist der Einsatz von Werkzeugen. Die Arbeit erläutert, wie aus der formalen Sprachdefinition voll-automatisch ein Werkzeug generiert wurde, das die Sprache SDL implementiert, und wie die durch die Umsetzung der formalen Semantikdefinition in ein Werkzeug Fehler in dieser Definition aufgedeckt und behoben werden konnten.
With the latest revision of ITU-T SDL (Specification and Description Language), the semantic foundations of the formal language definition were completely revised; the formal definition is now based on the calculus of Abstract State Machines (ASMs). In addition, the data type system of SDL was revised, as object-oriented concepts were added. As a result, a new semantical foundation for these new concepts had to be defined. The ACT.ONE calculus that had been used so far was not suitable as a foundation any more, as it is hard to use, unimplementable and not extensible for the object oriented features. In this thesis, we elaborate the principles of a formal language definition, and the realisation of these principles in SDL-2000. We explains that a consistent language definition can only be achieved by developing the formal semantics definition in parallel with the development of the informal definition. The formal language definition covers all aspects of the language: syntax, static semantics, and dynamic semantics. Using the data type semantics as an example, we show how each of these aspects is informally described, and then formalized. For the applicability of the formal semantics definition for practitioners, usage of tools plays a central role. We explain how we transform the formal language definition fully automatically into a tool that implements the language SDL. We also explain how creating the tool allowed us to uncover and correct errors in the informal definition.

Zahlreiche Untersuchungen belegen, dass räumlich selektive Aufmerksamkeit visuelle und auditive Reizverarbeitung beeinflusst. Bestehende Modellvorstellungen sind, aufgrund der geringen Kenntnisse vergleichbarer somatosensorischer Effekte, schwer zu einem allgemeinen Mechanismus generalisieren. Mittels zeitlich-räumlich hoch aufgelöster Messmethoden wurde in dieser Dissertation Effekte räumlich selektiver Aufmerksamkeit auf die bewusste Wahr-nehmung und kortikale Verarbeitung somatosensorischer Reize untersucht. Im Einzelnen wurde gezeigt, dass die räumlich selektive Aufmerksamkeit die Maskierung eines überschwelli-gen Reizes an einer Hand durch einen starken Reiz an der anderen Hand moduliert. Mittels Elektroenzephalografie (EEG) wurde nachgewiesen, dass nach der Stimulation die Verarbei-tung in einem fronto-parietalen Netzwerk den Zugang ins Bewusstsein signalisiert. Der Be-fund einer der bewussten Wahrnehmung zeitlich vorausgehenden neuronalen Desynchronisa-tion im frontalen Kortex und in S1 erlaubt eine Erweiterung bestehender Modellvorstellun-gen. In einer simultanen EEG-funktionelle Magnetresonanztomografie (fMRT) -Studie wurde gezeigt, dass räumlich selektive Aufmerksamkeit die Signalverarbeitung während einer frühen sensorischen Phase der Reizverarbeitung beeinflusst (50 ms). Dieser Effekt korrelierte mit den Blutflußveränderungen in S1. Zusammenfassend zeigen die Studien, dass räumlich selektive Aufmerksamkeit zwar frühe somatosensorische Aktivität in S1 sowie die Wahrnehmung so-matosensorischer Reize moduliert, dies jedoch keine hinreichende Bedingung für die bewusste Wahrnehmung ist. Hingegen ist die attentional kontrollierte Desynchronisation somatosenso-rischer Rhythmen vor der Stimulation, die eine verstärkte fronto-parietale Reizverarbeitung nach sich zieht, hierfür entscheidend.
Numerous studies have shown that selective orientation of attention to a stimulus location modulates visual and auditory stimulus processing. Due to the relatively little knowledge about comparable effects of attention in the somatosensory system, existing models can barely be assigned to general cortical mechanisms. The studies conducted in this dissertation should therefore contribute to this knowledge. Effects of spatial selective attention on conscious per-ception and cortical processing of somatosensory stimuli have been investigated by applying recording methods with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Specifically, it was shown that spatial selective attention modulates masking of supra-threshold stimulus on one hand by a strong stimulus applied to the other hand. Using electroencephalography (EEG), it was dem-onstrated that processing in a fronto-parietal network but not early S1-activation signals the entry into conscious perception. The finding of neuronal desynchronisation in the frontal cor-tex and S1 preceding conscious stimulus perception permits the extension of the existing models. With the aim of localizing the temporal effects of spatial selective attention, a simul-taneous EEG-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-study was conducted. In con-trast to findings of visual attention, it was shown that orientation of attention enhances soma-tosensory processing at an early stage of stimulus processing (50 ms). This effect correlated with the changes of cortical blood flow in S1. Together, these studies show that spatial-selective attention modulates early activity in S1 as well as conscious perception of somatosen-sory stimuli. Nevertheless, this is not sufficient for an entrance into conscious perception. Instead, attentionally controlled pre-stimulus desynchronisation of somatosensory rhythmic activity, followed by an increased fronto-parietal stimulus processing are necessary prerequi-sites for conscious perception.

Schädigungen im zentralen Nervensystem treten nicht nur bei der Multiplen Sklerose (MS), sondern auch bei einer Vielzahl weiterer entzündlicher Schadensparadigmen auf. Allgemeines Kennzeichen dieser primär wie auch sekundär entzündlichen neurodegenerativen Erkrankungen ist das Auftreten von oxidativem Stress in Verbindung mit einer eingeschränkten Regeneration von Nervenzellen und einem übermäßiges Auftreten von Astrozyten. Allerdings ist bislang nicht bekannt, welche Faktoren für eine frühe neuronale Schädigung verantwortlich sind, und welche Faktoren zu einem übermäßigen Auftreten von Astrozyten beitragen. Vorarbeiten belegten, dass Apoptose-regulierende Systeme, wie z.B. der TRAIL-Signalweg, sowohl an der Immunregulation als auch an Schädigungsprozessen im Gehirn beteiligt sein können. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde gezeigt, dass eine auf das ZNS beschränkte Blockade des TRAIL-Signalwegs in der EAE, dem Tiermodell der MS, zu einer signifikanten Verminderung des Erkrankungsgrades führte. Darüber hinaus wurde eine reduzierte Enzephalitogenität von TRAIL-defiziente Myelin-spezifischen Lymphozyten belegt. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass der TRAIL-vermittelte Schädigungsmechanismus die Pathogenese der Neuroinflammation entscheidend mitbestimmt und die immunregulatorische Wirkung eine eher untergeordnete Rolle spielt. Dagegen stellte sich im Tiermodell der bakteriellen Meningitis heraus, dass TRAIL hier eine anti-inflammatorische Rolle im ZNS spielt, die vor allem durch eine TRAIL-R-abhängige apoptotische Minderung der Entzündungsreaktion vermittelt wird. Eine Beeinflussung der Migration von Effektorzellen durch TRAIL konnte in diesem Modell ausgeschlossen werden. Anscheinend hängt die therapeutische Modulation des TRAIL-Systems entscheidend von der jeweils zu Grunde liegenden Ätiopathogenese ab und kann nicht allgemein auf entzündliche ZNS-Erkrankungen übertragen werden. Als mögliche Ursache für eine verminderte Regenerationsfähigkeit endogener Stammzellen konnte hier ein endogener Mechanismus aufgedeckt werden, der als Antwort auf oxidativen Stress zu einem quantitativen Überwiegen von Astrozyten führt. Dabei zeigte sich, dass nicht toxische oxidative Bedingungen das Proliferationsvermögen von neuralen Stammzellen deutlich hemmten und dazu führten, dass anstelle von Neuronen vornehmlich Astrozyten entstehen. Dieses veränderte Differenzierungsvermögen ließ sich sowohl in vitro als auch in vivo experimentell nachvollziehen und wies darauf hin, dass durch milde Entzündungsprozesse hervorgerufene basale metabolische Veränderungen die neuronale und astrogliale Entwicklung aus neuralen Stammzellen reziprok reguliert wird. In weiteren Untersuchungen stellte sich heraus, dass die Histondeacetylase Sirt1 in neuralen Stammzellen als Sensor für das Redox-Potenzial dient. Schon geringe metabolische Änderungen induzierten die Bindung an den bHLH-Transkriptionsfaktor Hes1, die zu einer direkten Modulation des pro-neuronalen Transkriptionsfaktors Mash1 führten und die Differenzierung von neuralen Stammzellen zugunsten der astroglialen Entwicklung beeinflussten. Die Aufklärung dieses Mechanismus könnte somit zukünftig helfen, intrinsische Regenerationsprozesse nach Schädigung des ZNS zu verstärken und damit neue therapeutische Perspektiven bei neurologischen Erkrankungen zu öffnen.
Damage processes of the central nervous system (CNS) are not only found in Multiple sclerosis (MS) even in a variety of inflammatory diseases. A common feature of these inflammatory neurodegenerative disorders is the existence of oxidative stress in combination with a failure of neuronal replenishment and the predominant occurrence of astrocytes (known as astrogliosis). So far, factors, which are responsible for early neuronal damage and overwhelming generation of astrocytes, are not known. Recent studies could show that the tumor necrosis factor related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) might be involved in immunregulation as well as damage processes in the CNS. Here, it could be shown that blockade of TRAIL in the CNS of animals suffering from experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) significantly ameliorates the disease. Furthermore, transfer of myelin-specific TRAIL-deficient T cells into wild type recipients lead to a significantly attenuated disease score. These findings underline the contribution of TRAIL to irreversible CNS damage. In the adult mammalian brain, multipotent and self-renewing neural progenitor cells (NPCs) have the capacity to generate new neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. NPCs may thus serve as a regenerative tool by which brain damage could be compensated. However, repair processes in response to all forms of neuronal injury, be they inflammatory, ischemic, metabolic, traumatic or other, are characterized by the failure of neuronal replenishment and the predominant occurrence of astrocytes. The common molecular pathways underlying this phenomenon are only poorly understood. Here, it could be shown that subtle alterations of the redox state, found in different brain damage scenarios, substantially regulate the fate of murine NPCs via the histone deacetylase silent mating type information regulation 2 homolog 1 (Sirt1). Mild oxidative conditions suppress proliferation of NPCs and direct their differentiation towards the astroglial at the expense of the neuronal lineage (and vice versa). Under oxidative conditions, NPCs upregulate Sirt1 in vitro and in vivo, which then binds to the transcriptional repressor Hes1 and finally downregulates the pro-neuronal basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor Mash1. Furthermore, it could be shown that targeted modulation of Sirt1 activity mimics the effects of subtle redox alterations. The results provide evidence for an as yet unknown metabolic master switch, which determines the fate of NPCs. Targeting these mechanisms may minimize undesired aspects of reactive astrogliosis as well as improve the success of therapeutic neural stem cell implantation.

In questo lavoro, viene proposto un metodo di Edge-Detection, in immagini rumorose e con sfuocamento. Il problema è stato posto da Marposs, che fornisce sistemi di misura di alta precisione, quindi è stato necessario applicare un metodo di detezione di edges a livello subpixel. È stato utilizzato il funzionale di Perona Malik per il metodo di denoising e un metodo basato sul calcolo di aree parziali per il subpixed edge detection. Il metodo raggiunge dei buoni risultati anche in situazioni di alto di rumore e sfocamento. Verranno mostrati risultati sia riguardo all'accuratezza dell'edge-detection di contorni rettilinei, con varie inclinazioni, che riguardo la ripetibilità. Infine verranno accennati alcuni risultati nel caso di edge curvilinei e possibili sviluppi futuri per migliorarne le prestazioni.

Studio inerente al tema della manutenzione su condizione, applicata ad un impianto per la produzione di capsule in plastica, in collaborazione con il gruppo SACMI S.C., a Imola, all’interno della divisione Closures & Cointainers. Presentata la tematica della manutenzione degli impianti di produzione e la sua evoluzione negli ultimi decenni, si pone l’attenzione sulle attività aziendali e l’ambito in cui si è incentrato lo studio. Segue una trattazione teorica del tema della Big Data Analysis e di come questa può essere sfruttata in termini di manutenzione predittiva e stima della RUL di un un particolare componente, concentrandosi sulle tecniche più recenti applicate in merito. Successivamente viene spiegato nel dettaglio il funzionamento della linea produttiva esaminata ed è affrontata la gestione del database di dati raw raccolti dai sensori presenti sull’impianto esaminato. Dopo averli presentati, per i diversi gruppi funzionali della linea presa in esame sono stati generati grafici su un periodo di nove mesi di produzione presso un cliente, andando a valutare: condizioni di funzionamento, possibili anomalie, trend che giustificassero usura o malfunzionamento di uno o più componenti. I risultati sono stati, quando possibile, confrontati con i report manutentivi reali, per avere conferme della robustezza dell’informazione generata dai sensori, in un’ottica che ha come possibile obiettivo quello di porre le basi per un futuro sistema di manutenzione su condizione.

In questa tesi di laurea è affrontato il progetto e lo sviluppo di un transpiler (Snap2ino) in grado di convertire progetti (micromondi) realizzati attraverso il linguaggio e l'ambiente Snap!, in progetti basati sul framework Wiring, con riferimento al caricamento e all'esecuzione di questi sulla nota piattaforma a microcontrollore Arduino. Nato a partire dalle necessità sorte nel contesto del progetto Smart T-Shirt, per il quale sono trattati nella prima parte della tesi il contesto applicativo (Educational e progetto COGITO) e quello tecnologico (sistemi embedded programmabili), Snap2ino è sviluppato seguendo un'approccio incrementale e attraverso la realizzazione di due prototipi successivi. La versione attuale del transpiler, unitamente all'ambiente Snap!, fornisce un vero e proprio framework per lo sviluppo di qualsiasi progetto in ambito di sistemi embedded/IoT basati su Wiring, nel quale si voglia sfruttare la programmazione visuale a blocchi, con particolare riferimento al mondo making e degli atelier digitali e creativi. Tra le caratteristiche peculiari rispetto a soluzioni già esistenti (p.e. Snap4Arduino), che rendono il framework realizzato potenzialmente significativo per l'intera comunità internazionale, troviamo: la possibilità di definire i propri blocchi su Snap! e come questi debbano essere mappati con le effettive implementazioni per il dispositivo di destinazione, consentendo la definizione del proprio "linguaggio" e del proprio "livello di astrazione", nonché di estendere e personalizzare i blocchi predefiniti supportati dal framework; la possibilità di utilizzare librerie e codice Wiring esistenti, e i relativi sensori e attuatori, rendendo il framework quanto più possibile aperto; la possibilità di utilizzare il dispositivo programmato (Arduino) senza la necessità che questo sia collegato a un pc nel quale è in esecuzione Snap!; il supporto ad aspetti avanzati come la gestione degli eventi e l'esecuzione di task (script/Sprite) concorrenti.

Nel mondo del packaging una delle commodities che maggiormente viene lavorata e ricercata è il polietilene. Infatti, questo materiale si presta a numerose tecniche produttive, tra cui lo stampaggio a compressione. Per ottimizzare tale processo industriale, può risultare efficacie la miscelazione con un secondo componente, capace di apportare nel prodotto finale un miglioramento delle proprietà. Per questa tesi, in collaborazione con il laboratorio packaging plastico di SACMI, il componente aggiuntivo scelto è un copolimero di poliolefine cicliche, Topas. Tale additivo è stato scelto per migliorare il processo produttivo SACMI di flaconi in HDPE, ottenuti tramite stampaggio a compressione (CBF). Le migliorie attese riguardano principalmente un incremento delle proprietà meccaniche, accompagnate a un maggior rapporto di stiro, consentendo di stampare flaconi più leggeri. Lo scopo delle analisi è stato quindi quello di confrontare le proprietà dell’HDPE puro, usato fino ad ora in azienda, con quelle del blend e di osservare i risultati in modo da valutare l’effettiva convenienza dell’aggiunta del secondo componente. Per quanto riguarda le analisi meccaniche, sono state effettuate prove di trazione per valutare l’incremento del modulo e prove a impatto per osservare cambiamenti nella resilienza, che cala considerevolmente. Per un’analisi sulla cristallinità sono state invece svolte analisi termiche con la DSC, mentre per osservare la morfologia e le separazioni di fase è stato usato un SEM. Anche la reologia è stata tenuta in grande considerazione, in particolar modo per quanto riguarda la viscosità elongazionale e di scorrimento, entrambe importanti durante l’estrusione del fuso in macchina. Infine, sono stati svolti test normati sui flaconi riguardanti la geometria, misurando gli spessori e la resistenza al top load.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a heterogeneous condition with classification based on shared pathophysiological characteristics. There is a paucity of literature reflecting the spectrum of disease across the 5 diagnostic groups encountered at a specialist referral centre in the era of the widespread availability of targeted pulmonary vascular therapy. The first part of this thesis focuses on the ASPIRE registry; a large registry of contemporary, consecutive, treatment-naïve patients identified at a specialist PH centre using a catheter-based approach. Uniquely, the ASPIRE registry compares the natural history of all forms of PH, providing new and novel insights into the natural history of rare groups such as pulmonary arterial hypertension and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension and more common but less well studied forms such as PH associated with left heart disease and lung disease where the role of targeted therapies is not clear. This registry demonstrates that outcomes and characteristics differ between and within PH diagnostic groups. In addition, the current system of diagnostic classification in PH has prognostic value even when adjusted for age and haemodynamic severity emphasizing the importance of systematic evaluation and precise classification. The second part of this thesis focuses on patients in group 3; pulmonary hypertension associated with lung disease, concentrating particularly on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema, the most common type of lung disease associated with PH. The characteristics of patients with severe PH associated with COPD (PH-COPD) differed from those with mild to moderate PH-COPD despite similar degrees of emphysema on CT scan. Survival in PH-COPD was poor and this study identified independent predictors of outcome. Patients with severe PH-COPD share certain characteristics with PAH such as the degree of haemodynamic severity and right ventricular impairment. This leads to the question of whether therapies frequently prescribed in PAH should be considered for this group. In the largest cohort yet studied, a minority of patients with severe PH-COPD demonstrated objective evidence of improvement with compassionate treatment with targeted pulmonary vascular therapies and where there was evidence of clinical benefit, patients demonstrated superior survival. This data suggests that further evaluation of targeted therapies is warranted in patients with severe PH-COPD. In conclusion, retrospective review of this cohort of patients has provided a detailed comparison of characteristics between and within PH diagnostic groups, assessed prognostic markers and provided insights into the effects of targeted pulmonary vascular treatment in severe PH-COPD. This underscores the importance of thorough assessment and accurate classification to ensure appropriate management and prudent use of costly therapies. This registry also provides detailed phenotypic information which may be helpful when defining entry criteria for clinical trials. The characterization of this patient cohort has also lead to a number of publications from collaborative projects in the Academic Unit of Radiology.

Mass-transport complexes (MTCs) can significantly modify the seascape by eroding the substrate and depositing thick hetherolithic packages that can behave as hydrocarbon seals or reservoirs. MTC erosion can affect the integrity of underlying reservoir units, and affect subsequent sediment dispersal. Moreover, the irregular seabed profiles resulting from MTC erosion and emplacement can affect the distribution and architecture of subsequent sediments. This study uses a 1900 km2 3D seismic volume from the southern Magdalena Fan, offshore Colombia to investigate: i) the relationship between changes in the size, distribution and provenance of the MTCs and the evolution of tectonic structures; ii) the relationship between and the distribution of MTCs, the geometries of their basal erosion surfaces and their internal characteristics, with the morphology and composition of the seabed, and iii) the effects of MTC-related bathymetric irregularities on the architecture and development of channel-levee complex sets and avulsion lobes. The size, distribution and provenance of MTCs changed through time with the oldest MTCs being smaller (9-100 km2 in area) and sourced and from local collapse of the growing anticlines. Younger MTCs are larger (more than 200-300 km2) and sourced from the shelf, postdating the main phase of folding and faulting in the study area. These changes were used to propose a model of the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the study area, demonstrating that MTCs can be used to constrain the timing and style of tectonic deformation in time and space. Additionally, the local morphology of the MTC basal surfaces reflects compositional changes in the underlying units, with deeper erosion occurring above channel axes deposits and more subtle slope changes across different levee units. MTC dispersal was influenced by a combination of structural and depositional relief: channel-levee complex sets channelized, diverted or blocked the subsequent mass-flows depending on the orientation of the channel-levee complex sets with respect to the direction of the flow, and the height of the levees with respect to flow thickness. Within the largest MTC, the distribution of the seismic facies was influenced by the underlying bathymetry, with internal contraction occurring updip of bathymetric highs, erosion and bypass above higher gradient slopes, and increased disaggregation towards the margins. Moreover, MTC erosion left behind an erosional remnant ridge upon which a younger channel-levee complex-set developed irregular levee geometries that led to levee collapse and channel avulsion. Map-view geometries and seismic-amplitude extractions suggest that the initial avulsion lobes were mud-prone and evolved to form sand-prone lobes. The distribution, morphology and evolution of the avulsion lobe complexes were influenced by megaclasts protruding on the MTC top surface. This study demonstrates that: i) the architecture, geometries and distribution of MTCs, channel-levee complex sets and avulsion lobes are strongly influenced by bathymetric irregularities on the seabed at various scales; ii) flow-pathways, geometries, distribution and internal characteristics of MTCs can be affected by the properties of the substrate; iii) the stratigraphic evolution of the Magdalena Fan is characterised by the interaction between MTCs and channel-levee complex sets. The learnings from this study can be applied to deeper intervals that are less well imaged and to other margins dominated by MTCs and channel-levee complex sets.

A relational approach to the question of how different logics relate formally is described. We consider three three-valued logics, as well as classical and semi-classical logic. A fundamental representation of three-valued predicates is developed in the Unifying Theories of Programming (UTP) framework of Hoare and He. On this foundation, the five logics are encoded semantically as UTP theories. Several fundamental relationships are revealed using theory linking mechanisms, which corroborate results found in the literature, and which have direct applicability to the sound mixing of logics in order to prove facts. The initial development of the fundamental three-valued predicate model, on which the theories are based, is then applied to the novel systems-of-systems specification language CML, in order to reveal proof obligations which bridge a gap that exists between the semantics of CML and the existing semantics of one of its sub-languages, VDM. Finally, a detailed account is given of an envisioned model theory for our proposed structuring, which aims to lift the sentences of the five logics encoded to the second order, allowing them to range over elements of existing UTP theories of computation, such as designs and CSP processes. We explain how this would form a complete treatment of logic interplay that is expressed entirely inside UTP.

This project documents the development of my recent compositional practice, a selection of which is presented in the accompanying portfolio. Through this commentary, the work is discussed in relation to a central theme: the figure of musical fragility, and its significance to my recent practice and surrounding musical thinking. Fragility is presented as a nebulous aesthetic concept, and a lens through which to examine elements of instability, vulnerability and tension between limits as they occur in various forms throughout my music. The compositions included in this portfolio therefore each exhibit some form of fragility as a moment of tension between that which is held delicately in cohesion, and the point at which it collapses into noise or silence. The compositions broadly operate within the context of instrumental contemporary classical music and the music of John Cage, Iannis Xenakis and late-period Luigi Nono, with a specific focus on stasis and quietness as found in minimal and drone-based musics. The music of Jakob Ullmann is also examined both as a proponent of features I deem to be fragile, and as an influence upon my compositional development. The research methodology for this project follows a reflexive framework: the composition of a work raises questions or problems which are then used to shape the next work, assessing its subsequent outcomes and so on. Particular attention is given to discussion of the development of my various notational practices, both in its technical relation to fragility, but also as a compositional process. This commentary does not attempt to say emphatically what fragility is, but rather, follow what fragility is doing and how it manifests throughout my recent compositions. The three most prominent themes I have identified are used as a means to navigate the discussion in each chapter: fragility in performance, fragility of form, and fragility as quietness.

El presente trabajo evaluó la calidad del agua en diferentes sitios de muestreo del Rio Mendoza, a través del uso de indicadores biológicos obtenidos a partir de la germinación de semillas de Lactuca sativa var. Gran rapids. En septiembre del año 2018, se extrajeron 7 muestras de agua: una cabecera del sistema de riego (testigo), 3 canales y 3 en drenes. Se realizó el análisis físico-químico determinando conductividad eléctrica, pH, RAS, análisis iónico de rutina (calcio, magnesio, sodio, potasio, carbonatos, bicarbonatos, cloruro, sulfatos), nitratos, fosfatos, coeficiente K, y carbonato de sodio residual. Para calcular los indicadores biológicos, se trabajó con 3 repeticiones, colocando en cada caso 20 semillas por caja de petri, sobre papel de filtro con 4 mL del agua extraída de cada sitio de muestreo. Las cajas, envueltas con papel film, se incubaron en estufa a temperatura controlada de 22°C y en condiciones de luz natural, por 5 días. Luego se realizó un conteo de semillas germinadas y se midió la longitud de radícula e hipocotilo. A partir de estos datos, se calcularon los siguientes indicadores: Germinación relativa de la semilla (GRS), Crecimiento relativo de la radícula (CRR), Índice de germinación (IG), Índice de porcentaje de germinación residual normalizado, Índice de porcentaje de elongación radical residual normalizado, Crecimiento relativo del hipocotilo e Índice de porcentaje de elongación del hipocotilo residual normalizado. Para el análisis estadístico, se utilizó el software Infostat, estableciendo las correlaciones entre los principales parámetros físico-químicos y los indicadores biológicos. Se trabajó con aguas de pH 6,9 a 7,4; medianamente salinas a francamente salinas (CE actual entre 960 a 3360 μS cm-1 y CE específica máxima de 2935 μS cm-1). Aguas de “Bajo Riesgo sódico", con valores de RAS entre 0,99 a 3,54, donde el coeficiente K resultó más adecuado para evaluar sodicidad (28,35 a 4,8) que las categorizó de buenas a mediocres al considerar la proporción de iones acompañantes. Los 7 indicadores biológicos mostraron diferencias en las aguas, pero se observó que los valores mínimos encontrados no coincidieron con los valores máximos de los parámetros físico-químicos. Al parecer habría presencia de sustancias que estarían afectando el crecimiento de las semillas, que no se incluyen en los parámetros físico-químicos analizados. Se destaca que el IG presentó mayor amplitud que los GRS y CRR, lo que podía indicar un mejor comportamiento al considerar en forma conjunta el porcentaje de germinación y crecimiento de la radícula. Los indicadores que hacen referencia al crecimiento del hipocotilo son los que presentaron peor respuesta. De la evaluación de 49 correlaciones, se concluyó que no hubo asociación entre los indicadores biológicos relacionados con la germinación o crecimiento de las semillas y las características físico químicas de las aguas estudiadas en las condiciones en que se llevó a cabo esta investigación. Sin embargo, se destaca que podrían existir correlaciones significativas con aguas de mayor variabilidad (otras zonas) o en otras condiciones de trabajo (temperatura, periodo de incubación, etc.), como se ha detectado en otras investigaciones similares.

En un marco global donde las desigualdades entre países resultan cada vez más evidentes y donde el mundo globalizado ha fallado en sus intentos de recetas estandarizadas para alcanzar el desarrollo, se cree relevante reafirmar la necesidad de una Sociología regional, una Sociología Latinoamericana que estudie la región desde una perspectiva renovada y no eurocéntrica. Las Teorías de la Dependencia surgen en la década de 1960 como respuesta alternativa a un modelo teórico que no estaba dando respuestas a los problemas de América Latina: el desarrollismo cepalino. Era necesario pensar el porqué del subdesarrollo y sus causas, ¿se encontraban éstas dentro de la estructura económica de los países latinoamericanos o, por el contrario, esa estructura económica atrasada era justamente el resultado de una manera particular de relación entre los centros y las periferias? A finales de la década de 1940 y durante la década de 1950, la teoría predominante que daba respuesta a esta pregunta, desde nuestra región, era aquella formulada por la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL). Sin embargo, para 1960, a pesar de que muchos países habían implementado políticas desarrollistas basadas en los supuestos cepalinos, éstas no tuvieron los resultados esperados. Así, se empezó a gestar una crítica dentro de la misma organización. Mientras que para el desarrollismo el eje estaba en el estudio del subdesarrollo, los teóricos críticos corren este eje y determinan un nuevo objeto de estudio: la dependencia. Esta categoría tomó un lugar central en los estudios sociales de la época. Vania Bambirra fue una de las grandes responsables de la formulación de este pensamiento dependentista, junto a André Gunder Frank, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Enzo Faletto, Ruy Mauro Marini y Theotonio dos Santos, entre otrxs. Si bien existen importantes trabajos sobre el aporte de esta perspectiva al pensamiento crítico (Beigel, Cárdenas, Rada Aragol, Meireles, entre otros), e incluso algunos esfuerzos por rescatar los aportes específicos de Ruy Mauro Marini y Theotonio Dos Santos, no existen en igual medida trabajos centrados en los aportes de la autora que será objeto de la presenta tesis.

La reabsorción cervical externa (RCE) es la pérdida de tejido duro dental (cemento, dentina) como resultado de la acción osteoclástica. El cual comienza en la región cervical de la superficie de la raíz de los elementos dentarios como resultado del daño y/o la deficiencia del ligamento periodontal. Su causa exacta es poco conocida; pero presenta varios factores etiológicos que podrían dañar la región cervical de la superficie de la raíz, y por lo tanto iniciar la CE; los cuales pueden ser: trauma oclusal, tratamiento de ortodoncia, blanqueamiento intracoronal, terapia periodontal y etiología idiopática. La RCE puede diagnosticarse como un hallazgo clínico y/o radiográfico, la misma no presenta síntomas clínicos, es asintomática; aunque en casos más avanzados, el paciente puede presentar síntomas de pulpitis irreversible y/o periodontitis apical. Para confirmar la ubicación de las lesiones de la RCE que no son detectadas clínicamente se puede utilizar la técnica radiográfica de paralelismo. El uso de radiografías periapicales tiene varias limitaciones para la detección de signos radiográficos de la enfermedad por lo que se lo complementa con el uso de CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) que permite ver la RCE en cualquier plano sin superposición de estructuras anatómicas y distorsión. El objetivo de este trabajo es describir la etiología, patogénesis, manifestaciones clínicas y radiográficas de la reabsorción cervical externa, analizar la problemática de su diagnóstico y presentar la resolución de un caso clínico. En el presente trabajo se describió el caso clínico de una paciente femenina de 50 años de edad que concurrió a la consulta por cambio de coloración en el elemento 21, luego de realizar el diagnóstico clínico y radiográfico se diagnosticó una reabsorción cervical externa clase III, siendo tratado por vía quirúrgica y no quirúrgica. El manejo efectivo y predecible de la RCE depende de la evaluación precisa de la verdadera naturaleza de la RCE, lo que determinará el pronóstico del elemento dentario.

The focus of the research is to investigate and develop enhanced version of swarm intelligence firefly algorithm and ecology-based invasive weed algorithm to solve global optimisation problems and apply to practical engineering problems. The work presents two adaptive variants of firefly algorithm by introducing spread factor mechanism that exploits the fitness intensity during the search process. The spread factor mechanism is proposed to enhance the adaptive parameter terms of the firefly algorithm. The adaptive algorithms are formulated to avoid premature convergence and better optimum solution value. Two new adaptive variants of invasive weed algorithm are also developed seed spread factor mechanism introduced in the dispersal process of the algorithm. The working principles and structure of the adaptive firefly and invasive weed algorithms are described and discussed. Hybrid invasive weed-firefly algorithm and hybrid invasive weed-firefly algorithm with spread factor mechanism are also proposed. The new hybridization algorithms are developed by retaining their individual advantages to help overcome the shortcomings of the original algorithms. The performances of the proposed algorithms are investigated and assessed in single-objective, constrained and multi-objective optimisation problems. Well known benchmark functions as well as current CEC 2006 and CEC 2014 test functions are used in this research. A selection of performance measurement tools is also used to evaluate performances of the algorithms. The algorithms are further tested with practical engineering design problems and in modelling and control of dynamic systems. The systems considered comprise a twin rotor system, a single-link flexible manipulator system and assistive exoskeletons for upper and lower extremities. The performance results are evaluated in comparison to the original firefly and invasive weed algorithms. It is demonstrated that the proposed approaches are superior over the individual algorithms in terms of efficiency, convergence speed and quality of the optimal solution achieved.

Abstract (sommario):

This thesis reports on progress towards diode-bar pumped crystal waveguide lasers with a high-power, high-quality output. It is shown that in order to accommodate the highly divergent, non-diffraction limited output from a diode-bar pump source, a waveguide with a relatively large numerical aperture (NA) is required. A selection of suitable waveguide fabrication techniques, including liquid phase epitaxy (LPE), pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and direct bonding, were investigated. A Nd:GGG on YAG waveguide fabricated by PLD was found to have a loss <0.5dB/cm, the lowest so far reported for a PLD layer. The waveguide lased on the four-level laser transition at around 1µm and, for the first time, on the quasi-three-level transition, around 940nm. However, the fluorescence spectra of the guide was significantly broadened with respect to bulk grown crystals. The fabrication technique of direct bonding was found to reliably produce good quality waveguides with losses <0.5dB/cm and in some cases as low as 0.2dB/cm. The waveguides had spectroscopic characteristics of the bulk material and the technique accommodates a wide range of material combinations. Both low and high NA structures can be fabricated and Nd:GGG/YAG (NA=0.75), Nd:YAG/YAG (NA=0.06), Nd:YAG/sapphire (NA=0.46) and Nd:YAG/glass (NA=0.82) direct bonded waveguide lasers were demonstrated. Pumping the volume of a planar waveguide with the high average power of a diode-bar can lead to a high inversion density and a high thermal load. This novel pumping regime was investigated experimentally and theoretically modelled. In parallel spectroscopic measurements by Dr. Stephan Guy at the University of Lyon, the Auger upconversion rate in Nd:YAG was measured to be 7x103s- 1; significantly lower than had been reported previously. Modelling studies have shown how this upconversion, and the saturation of the absorption, can affect the gain available in an intensely pumped system. The model, and the value for the Auger rate, was consistent with experimental amplifier measurements. The associated heat load for such a system was also modelled to compare the performance of a planar waveguide with bulk slab and bulk rod-shaped gain media. The model showed that the planar waveguide maintains the thermal advantages of a slab geometry over that of a rod, although slightly higher temperature rises and slightly lower thermal stress fracture limits were predicted in a planar waveguide compared to an identical sized, but uniformly-pumped, bulk slab. Advances in coupling diode-bar pump lasers to planar waveguides have been made. A 20W fibre-lensed diode-bar, coupled with bulk cylindrical lenses, end-pumped an 80µm Nd:YAG planar waveguide and gave a maximum output power of 6.2W. The device had an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 31 % and M2 output beam quality of 3 x 140 in the guided and non-guided directions respectively. More compact, rod-lens focussing successfully coupled this pump source into sub-10-µm waveguides, and an output power of 3.7W was obtained from an 8µm Nd:YAG waveguide laser. A first demonstration of proximity coupling a diode-bar to a waveguide, with no intervening optics, gave a coupling efficiency of ~90% into an 8µm Nd:YAG/sapphire direct bonded waveguide. Techniques for improving the quality of the spatial mode output from the waveguide laser have been considered. In the guided direction, a metal overlaid coating gave a slight improvement in the laser mode quality and also led to a polarised output. A better solution was found by designing the first double-clad waveguides. Fabricated by direct bonding a five-layer, Yb:YAG/YAG/sapphire waveguide structure was proximity coupled to a 22W diode-bar pump laser. It gave a maximum output power of 2.2W in a side-pumped configuration. In the guided direction this laser had an output divergence with an M2 very close to 1, consistent with fundamental laser mode operation, Spatial mode selection occurred due to the confined nature of the gain region, and not the cladding-pumping of a single mode core. In the non-guided direction initial experiments aiming to improve M2 by using an unstable resonator design gave promising results but further work is required in this area.

Has writing changed history or has it merely recorded historical change? Within the field of Literacy Studies, opinions on the role of writing in bringing about historical change have tended to polarise into two camps. The 'autonomous' school sees literacy as a dynamic force for change and accords it a central role in the development of civilisation. The 'ecological' school sees literacy as embedded in specific social contexts and disputes that it plays any autonomous role in historical change. This thesis will discuss both theoretical approaches and evaluate these contrasting positions in a specific historical context. The focus of this study is on the role that literacy played in Ireland from the medieval to the modem period. Ireland is a useful case study because it contains virtually all the elements that arise in the wider debate: restricted literacy and pragmatic literacy, the relationship of language change to literacy, the presence of disparate literate practices, and the role of literacy in advancing development and spawning uneven development. As well as examining the role of literacy in Ireland from the late Middle Ages to the early modem period, this study compares the development of literate practices in Ireland to those in England, Scotland and Wales and assesses their role in responding to the Reformation and political centralisation. This thesis also compares the origins and the early development of capitalism in Ireland and Scotland, and attempts to assess the role of literacy in explaining the divergent paths taken by these societies. Finally it examines the relationship between the emergence of mass literacy and the rise of national identities. From the study of Ireland and its neighbours, the thesis attempts to draw some general conclusions about the relationship between literacy and historical change.

Concern has arisen as to whether the lack of appropriate consideration to surface water in urban spatial planning is reducing our capacity to manage surface water flood risk. Appropriate tools are required that allow spatial planners to explore opportunities and solutions for surface water flooding at large spatial scales. An urban surface water balance model has been developed that screens large urban areas to identify flooded areas and which allows solutions to be explored. The model hypothesis is that key hydrological characteristics; storage volume and location, flow paths and surface water generation capture the key processes responsible for surface water flooding. The model uses a LiDAR DEM (Light Detection and Ranging Digital Elevation Model) as the basis for determining surface water accumulation in a catchment and has been developed so that it requires minimal inputs and computational resources. The urban surface water balance approach is applied to Keighley in West Yorkshire where several instances of surface water flooding have been reported. Data for validating surface water flood risk models is sparse because such flooding events are of short duration, very localized and distributed across the catchment. This research used a postal questionnaire, followed up with site visits to collect data on surface water flooding locations in Keighley. The validation exercise confirmed that the major processes responsible for flooding are largely well represented in the model for situations where interaction with the urban sewer network is well represented by the assumptions made in the model. A qualitative analysis based on field visits revealed that the degree of interaction with the sewer network varies spatially, and as the importance of the interaction of the sewer system increases, the accuracy of the model results are lowered. It also highlighted that local detail not present in the DEM, the presence of urban drainage assets and the performance of the sewer system, which are not be represented in the model, can determine the accuracy of model results. Model results were used as a basis to develop solutions to surface water flooding. A least cost path methodology was developed to identify managed flood routes as a solution. These were translated into model inputs in the form a modified DEM. It was shown that the simple and fast representation of flood routes and surface storage is of considerable benefit for scenario analysis.

This research project is concerned with the design, synthesis and development of new phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors with improved selectivities and lower toxicities. Two series of a 5 member and a 6 member ring fused heterocyclic compounds were designed, and synthesized. By alteration of starting materials and fragments, two virtual libraries, each is consisted of close to hundred compounds, were obtained successfully. The screening of sexual stimulation activity with rabbits demonstrated both groups of compounds were able to stimulate rabbit penile erection significantly. The following toxicity studies revealed 2-(substituted-sulfonylphenyl)-imidazo [1,5-a]-1,3,5-triazine-4-(3H)-one group possessed an unacceptable toxicity with oral LD50 about 200mg/kg; while 2-(substituted-sulfonylphenyl)-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-one group showed an acceptable toxicity with oral LD50 over 2000mg/kg. The continued bioactivity studies showed yonkenafil, the representative of 2-(substituted-sulfonylphenyl)-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-one group, has a better selectivity towards PDE5 and PDE6 than sildenafil and a better overall profile of sexual stimulation on animals than sildenafil. Chronic toxicity studies of yonkenafil further confirmed yonkenafil did not cause any serious side effect and damage on animal models and most actions were explainable. Based on evidences of the above studies, yonkenafil were recommended to enter clinical trials by the regulation authority of China, SFDA. Currently yonkenafil has been through the Phase I clinical trials and ready to progress into Phase II. Hopefully, yonkenafil will provide an alternative to the ED patients in the future.

Mental simulations and analogies have been identified as powerful learning tools for RNPs. Furthermore, visuals in advertising have recently been conceptualized as meaningful sources of information as opposed to peripheral cues and thus may help consumers learn about RNPs. The study of visual attention may also contribute to understanding the links between conceptual and perceptual analyses when learning for a RNP. Two conceptual models are developed. the first model consists of causal relationships between the attributes of advertising stimuli for RNPs and consumer responses, as well as mediating influences. The second model focuses on the role of visual attention in product comprehension as a response to advertising stimuli. Two experiments are conducted: a Web-Experiment and an eye-tracking experiment. The first experiment (858 subjects) examines the effect of learning strategies (mental simulation vs. analogy vs. no analogy/no mental simulation) and presentation formats (words vs. pictures) on individual responses. The mediating role of emotions is assessed. The second experiment investigates the effect of learning strategies and presentation formats on product comprehension, along with the role of attention (17 subjects). The findings from experiment 1 indicate that learning strategies and presentation formats can either enhance or undermine the effect of advertising stimuli on individual responses. Moreover, the nature of the product (i.e. hedonic vs. utilitarian vs. hybrid) should be considered when designing communications for RNPs. The mediating role of emotions is verified. Experiment 2 suggests that an increase in attention to the message may either reflect enhanced comprehension or confusion.

The study is concerned with post-observation feedback and its role as an instigator of teacher learning and change. It investigates two kinds of feedback: corrective and confirmatory and explores how each kind of feedback may have contributed to the learning of a group of student teachers. It also investigates the ways in which these teachers have experienced changes in behaviour and changes in cognition. It adopts a qualitative approach to research, making use of case studies. It brings an additional perspective to the literature on change by examining changes in teacher persona, as reported by the student teachers themselves. It introduces and discusses two new concepts that emerged from the research reported in the study: convergent change and divergent change. It argues that certain kinds of feedback seem to be more facilitative of convergent change while some others seem to lead to change that is characterised as being more divergent. It considers the implications which the findings may have for teacher educators.

Derived from centuries-old English laws, Australian laws ascribe criminal responsibility to children according to their age and their assumed level of understanding of the rightness and wrongness of certain acts. This project first charts the creation and development of the English and Australian positions. Then, using insights from postmodernity and the idea of deconstruction, the law is critically assessed to reveal practical, theoretical and moral limits in the law's attempt to do justice. The justifiability of the current Australian legal positions is questioned by demonstrating the law's internal inconsistencies, by revealing the law's historical and philosophical preferences, and by contrasting the law's restricted ambit of inquiry with contemporary knowledge from other disciplines including developmental psychology and sociology.

Dunaliella, a genus of unicellular, biflagellate green algae, is one of the most studied microalgae for mass culture and is of commercial importance as a source of natural -carotene. Dunaliella species have the desirable properties of halotolerance and photoautotrophy that makes their large-scale culture simple and cheap using resources unsuitable for conventional agriculture. The ease and cost-effectiveness of culture makes Dunaliella a desirable target for increased production of natural compounds by metabolic engineering or for exploitation as biological factories for the synthesis of novel high-value compounds. However, the lack of efficient genetic transformation systems has been a major limitation in the manipulation of these microalgae. In chapter four we describe the development of a nuclear transformation system for Dunaliella tertiolecta. The gene encoding the phleomycin-binding protein from Streptoalloteichus hindustanus, was chosen as the selectable marker as this protein retains activity at high salt concentrations. To drive expression of the chosen selectable marker, two highly expressed Dunaliella tertiolecta RbcS genes and their associated 5' and 3' regulatory regions were isolated and characterised (chapter three). Dunaliella transformation cassettes containing the RbcS promoter and terminator regions flanking the ble antibiotic resistance gene were constructed. These expression cassettes were tested in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cells and found to drive expression of the ble gene in this heterologous system. This study also demonstrated that truncation of both the D. tertiolecta RbcS1 and RbcS2 regulatory regions significantly increases the expression of the ble gene in C. reinhardtii cells. To determine if the foreign DNA could stably integrate into the Dunaliella genome, four transformation methods: microprojectile bombardment, glass bead-mediated transformation, PEG-mediated transformation and electroporation were tested and a number of parameters varied. Southern blot analysis revealed that the plasmid DNA transiently entered the Dunaliella cells following electroporation but was rapidly degraded. Following electroporation, one stably transformed Dunaliella line was recovered. This is the first demonstration of the stable transformation of this alga. Chloroplast transformation is becoming a favoured method for the production of recombinant proteins in plants, as levels of heterologous protein are often higher than those achieved by transforming the nucleus. The Dunaliella chloroplast genome has not been genetically characterised, and thus there were no existing promoter and terminator sequences or sequences of intergenic regions that could be used for vectors in transformation of the chloroplast. Therefore, this study aimed to isolate and characterise promoters of highly expressed genes and matching terminators capable of driving transgene expression, and also to characterise intergenic regions that would be suitable insertion sites for the vector construct (chapter five). The complete gene sequence of two highly expressed Dunaliella chloroplast genes psbB and rbcL including the promoter and terminator regions as well as the coding sequence of the psbA gene were cloned and sequenced. In addition, the psbA gene is useful as a selectable marker as introduced mutations confer resistance to the herbicide 3-(3,4-Dichlorophenyl)-1,1-Dimethylurea (DCMU). Two homologous transformation constructs based on mutated psbA genes were developed and tested using microprojectile bombardment. A number of parameters were tested including: the size of the gold microprojectile particle, the distance of the plates from the point of discharge, plating onto membranes or filter paper, helium pressure, addition of an osmoticum to the medium and recovery time. Although no chloroplast transformants were recovered in this study, these homologous recombination constructs should prove useful in the development of a chloroplast transformation protocol. The other major component of this study was to investigate the use of microalgae as an expression system for the production of recombinant proteins. Transformation of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a species related to Dunaliella, is well developed. In chapter six, this study examined the expression of two human proteins, -lactalbumin and IGF-1 in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Plasmids containing the C. reinhardtii RbcS2 promoter upstream of the cDNAs of these two proteins were introduced into C. reinhardtii cells using glass-bead mediated transformation. Transgenic C. reinhardtii lines were generated and shown to contain the transgenes by PCR and Southern hybridisation. RT- PCR and northern hybridisation were subsequently used to demonstrate that the transgenes were transcriptionally active. The transcripts however, could only be detected by RT-PCR indicating that the genes were transcribed at low levels. Accumulation of the -lactalbumin protein could not be demonstrated, suggesting that although the transgenes were transcribed, they were either not translated or translated at levels below the sensitivity of western blot analysis or that any protein produced was rapidly degraded. Previous studies have indicated that in microalgae codon usage is vital in translation of the foreign protein. Codon modification of the IGF-I and -lactalbumin genes should lead to higher levels of protein accumulation. This study reports the first successful stable nuclear transformation of Dunaliella tertiolecta. Therefore it is now feasible that Dunaliella can be examined as a bioreactor for the expression of recombinant proteins. In addition, two chloroplast genes (psbB and rbcL) and their corresponding promoters and terminators have been characterised and a selectable marker cassette based on the mutated psbA gene constructed.

Previously cloned bacteriophage encoded HyIP 1 from the genome sequenced organism Streptococcus pyogenes SF370 was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to homogeneity. The protein, previously assigned to glycoside hydrolase family 69 (GH69) was biochemically recharacterised as a polysaccharide lyase and reassigned to family 16 (PL16). The enzyme demonstrated a Km of 1.47 mg m1-1 and a kcat of 7.2 s-1. Biochemically the enzyme had an optimum pH of 6.5 and temperature of 37 °C. The enzyme required no additional divalent ions for catalysis. The enzyme demonstrated strict substrate specificity only degrading hyaluronate and with no activity against related substrates chondroitin 4 sulphate and chondroitin 6 sulphate. HPAEC indicated the HylP1 had an endo mechanism of cleavage producing a range of differently sized oligosaccharides with the smallest being a tetramer. Site directed mutagenesis revealed a role for residues D157 and Y169 with substitution of these residues with alanine resulted in a 88.5% and 91.9 % loss of activity respectively. The location of these residues within the solved structure of HylP1 falls within the triple stranded (3 helix formed by the trimerised protein. This region of the protein was cloned, expressed and characterised and demonstrated similar kinetics as the full length protein (Km of 0.53 mg m1-1 and keat of 11.1 s-1). The activity of the enzyme when compared to other hyaluronate lyases shows it to be relatively inefficient yet when compared to other bacteriophage encoded hyaluronate lyases, HylP 1 was very similar. The proposed role of these bacteriophage encoded hyaluronate lyases is one of degradation of the hyaluronate capsule surrounding the streptococcal cells to allow for penetration of the bacteriophage during infection. Using the sequence of HylP1 the recently completed genome of Streptococcus equi was searched using bioinformatics tool BLAST. This revealed the presence of a protein, SEQ2045, sharing 85 % identity with HylPl. The protein was cloned and expressed in E. colt and biochemically characterised as a hyaluronate lyase. The enzyme demonstrated a Km of 2.05 mg m1-1 and a kcat of 6.2 s-1 which when compared to those of Hy1P 1 is suggestive that the two enzymes are strongly related. The enzyme had an optimum pH of 6.5 and temperature of 37 °C and like Hy1P 1 demonstrated only activity against hyaluronate and had an endo mechanism of cleavage with the smallest product of digestion being a tetramer. Site directed mutagenesis of the same residues as in HylP1 again yielded reduced activity (91.3 % and 87.6 % respectively). Bioinformatic analysis of the genome of S. equi was performed by BLAST searching with the proposed gene sequences of S. equi flanking SEQ2045. This allowed for the production of a prophage map which shows distinct similarities to the prophage map of S. pyogenes suggesting both may be of the same origin. Purified SEQ2045 was used in western blot analysis with S. equi convalescent horse serum. A strong positive reaction demonstrated a possible role for SEQ2045 during an infection suggesting that the bacteria have acquired this enzyme as a potential virulence factor by horizontal gene transfer. This presents a useful opportunity for the study of both S. pyogenes and S. equi infection process and the role of bacteriophage by the use of S. equi as a model for S. pyogenes.

The thesis examines the process by which sustained reform became possible in Argentina between 1989 and 1995 after some fifty years of cyclical crisis and ungovernability. It argues that the first administration of Carlos Menem broke the earlier 'logic' of Argentine politics, characterised by the suffocation of economic policy coherence by organised political interests. What needs to be explained, in this light, is not why reform happened in Argentina (- this is explained readily with reference to the crisis of 1989), but rather how it was sustained. The central contention is that the consolidation of reform can be explained convincingly with reference to international influences from around 1991/2 onwards. These influences are identified as (a) globalisation, (b) conditionality, and (c) regionalisation. In this way, the theoretical agenda of the thesis feeds into the study of International Political Economy and the prevalent debates in the study of globalisation. The international influences on change at the domestic level worked in two ways. First, they acted to 'rescue' the Argentine state from its conditions of crisis in the late 1980s by providing the political and economic space for a radical reform of both the economy and society. Second, the consolidation of this restructuring process was achieved from 1991/2 onwards through the 'internationalisation' of the state, which led to significant changes in the nature of state power. The impact of the three dimensions of international influence generated a 'paradox of state power', in which the state became simultaneously more and less 'powerful': while its autonomy diminished in the international context in terms of the available policy options, there was a marked increase in its autonomy in the internal arena vis-a-vis domestic political and economic actors. The result was an opportunity for the consolidation of the government's political and economic reform agenda in Argentina.

A novel blind source separation algorithm applicable to extracting sources from within 3D soundscapes is presented. The algorithm is based on constructing a binary mask based on directional information. The validity of filtering using binary masked based on the ω-disjoint assumption is examined for several typical scenarios. Results for these test environments show an improvement by an order of magnitude when compared to similar work using speech mixtures. Also presented is the novel application of a dual-tree complex wavelet transform to sparse source separation, providing an alternative transformation to the short-time Fourier transform often used in this area. Results are presented showing compara- ble signal-to-interference performance, and significantly improved signal-to-distortion performance when compared against the short time Fourier transform. Results presented for the separation algorithm include quantitative measures of the separation performance for robust comparison against other separation algorithms. Consideration is given to the related problem of localising sources within 3D sound- scapes. Two novel methods are presented, the first using a peak estimation on a spherical histogram constructed using a geodesic grid, the second by adapting a self learning plastic self-organising map to operate on the surface of a unit sphere. It is concluded that the separation algorithm presented is effective for soundscapes comprising ecological or zoological sources. Specific areas for further work are recog- nised, both in terms of isolated technologies and towards the integration of this work into an instrument for soundscape recognition, evaluation and identification.

This doctoral work gains deeper insight into the dynamics of knowledge flows within and across clusters, unfolding their features, directions and strategic implications. Alliances, networks and personnel mobility are acknowledged as the three main channels of inter-firm knowledge flows, thus offering three heterogeneous measures to analyze the phenomenon. The interplay between the three channels and the richness of available research methods, has allowed for the elaboration of three different papers and perspectives. The common empirical setting is the IT cluster in Bangalore, for its distinguished features as a high-tech cluster and for its steady yearly two-digit growth around the service-based business model. The first paper deploys both a firm-level and a tie-level analysis, exploring the cases of 4 domestic companies and of 2 MNCs active the cluster, according to a cluster-based perspective. The distinction between business-domain knowledge and technical knowledge emerges from the qualitative evidence, further confirmed by quantitative analyses at tie-level. At firm-level, the specialization degree seems to be influencing the kind of knowledge shared, while at tie-level both the frequency of interaction and the governance mode prove to determine differences in the distribution of knowledge flows. The second paper zooms out and considers the inter-firm networks; particularly focusing on the role of cluster boundary, internal and external networks are analyzed, in their size, long-term orientation and exploration degree. The research method is purely qualitative and allows for the observation of the evolving strategic role of internal network: from exploitation-based to exploration-based. Moreover, a causal pattern is emphasized, linking the evolution and features of the external network to the evolution and features of internal network. The final paper addresses the softer and more micro-level side of knowledge flows: personnel mobility. A social capital perspective is here developed, which considers both employees’ acquisition and employees’ loss as building inter-firm ties, thus enhancing company’s overall social capital. Negative binomial regression analyses at dyad-level test the significant impact of cluster affiliation (cluster firms vs non-cluster firms), industry affiliation (IT firms vs non-IT fims) and foreign affiliation (MNCs vs domestic firms) in shaping the uneven distribution of personnel mobility, and thus of knowledge flows, among companies.

O presente relatório fundamenta o percurso de aprendizagem ao longo da Unidade Curricular de Estágio com Relatório expressando o desenvolvimento de competências preconizadas pela OE (2010) para o perfil de Enfermeiro Especialista em Enfermagem de Saúde Materna, Obstétrica e Ginecológica, através da metodologia de projecto e a análise reflexiva. O empoderamento da grávida para o controlo e a gestão da dor, durante o trabalho de parto, foi o enfoque do meu projecto, sendo as intervenções centradas na utilização de medidas não farmacológicas para o alívio da dor mediante a utilização de técnicas de comunicação e de educação para a saúde. Os cuidados humanizados e o conforto da mulher durante o trabalho de parto englobam, não somente o alívio da dor, mas também o reforço do direito a uma cidadania activa, que implique a tomada de decisão esclarecida. Através da implementação de medidas não farmacológicas de alívio da dor, pretendeu se incentivar e capacitar à grávida a participar activamente durante o trabalho de parto e tornando-a protagonista do seu parto. Consideramos o empoderamento, um status político, social e económico, que permite uma igualdade no acesso das mulheres aos recursos existentes, garantindo-lhes o direito de tomar decisões estratégicas acerca das suas próprias vidas. As actividades desenvolvidas para a concretização do projecto individual que esteve na base deste relatório, tiveram como objectivo promover a saúde e o bem-estar da mulher/convivente significativo, respeitando e promovendo os seus direitos. Estas reflectiram-se no desenvolvimento de competências, salientando-se a utilização de técnicas eficazes de comunicação e de educação para a saúde.

In this thesis we first investigate PBW deformations of Koszul, Calabi-Yau algebras, and we then study moduli spaces of representations of algebras defined by tilting bundles. These classes of algebras are generalisations of the skew group algebras appearing as noncommutative resolutions in the McKay correspondence, and the results we prove are motivated by corresponding results for skew group algebras. Koszul, Calabi-Yau algebras are Morita equivalent to path algebras with relations defined by superpotentials, and we classify which PBW deformations of these algebras still have relations defined by a superpotential and show that these deformations also retain the Calabi-Yau property. As an application of these results we show that symplectic reflection algebras are Calabi-Yau and can be interpreted as path algebras with relations defined by a superpotential. We then investigate when a variety with a tilting bundle can be produced as a moduli space of representations of an algebra defined by the tilting bundle. We find a set of conditions ensuring a variety and tilting bundle can be reconstructed in such a manner, and we show that these conditions hold in a large class of examples, which includes situations arising in the minimal model Program where the variety may be singular. As an example we show that the minimal resolution of a rational surface singularity can be produced as a moduli space for a noncommutative algebra such that the tautological bundle is a tilting bundle defining the noncommutative algebra.

Problem: In South Africa, women have not always had opportunities in society or the workplace due to historical discriminatory political and socio-economic policies and practices, including apartheid (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, 2011). Gender disparity at the top echelons of organisations is still prevalent, and the South African business landscape is not different despite progressive legislation promulgated in the late 90s when the democratic government took over. Aim of the study: The aim was to identify challenges faced by women when attempting to advance into executive positions and strategies that could assist them in this respect. Method: A literature study was conducted to establish what work had already been done in the field of gender studies and advancement of women in the corporate world. For the empirical study an interpretivist paradigm with a qualitative research approach was adopted. Interviews were conducted with ten women who were members of the Port Elizabeth branch of the Businesswomen's Association of South Africa (BWASA) and who were categorised as hopeful, emerging or already in executive positions. They were asked about the challenges they were facing or had experienced and the strategies that assisted or could assist them in advancing to an executive position. They were also asked to provide critical incidents with the view of enriching the data and gaining a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. Results: Gender-insensitive organisational policies, an unsupportive organisational culture and unknown barriers in selection emerged as key challenges experienced by the participants. Facilitative strategies that emerged included a supportive corporate culture, family support, an enabling supervisor and affiliation to professional bodies. Conclusion: Whilst a large pool of work has been done on the advancement of women, gender equality in corporate South Africa remained a challenge. This challenge should be addressed from a corporate, personal and professional perspective. Recommendations: An integrated organisational approach to this phenomenon is required which should include appropriate company policies, a supportive organisational culture and enabling supervisors. In addition, women should garner the support that their families provide and they could greatly benefit from affiliating to professional bodies.

Situated in northwest B.C Canada, the Southwest Zone Cu-Au breccia-centered deposit is one of twelve mineralized centers in the Galore Creek alkalic porphyry district. Formed in an island arc-setting outboard of ancestral North America in the lateTriassic, deposits in the Galore Creek district have a combined measured and indicated resource of 785.7 Mt at 0.52 per cent Cu, 0.29 g/t Au and 4.87g/t Ag. Mineralisation in the Southwest Zone is centered in narrow hydrothermally cemented breccias. Composite dikes of megacrystic orthoclase-phyric syenite and megacrystic orthoclase and plagioclase-phyric monzonite are cut by polylithic, poorly sorted pebblecobble clast size matrix-rich breccias. Hydrothermally cemented breccias, characterised by the cement (infill) assemblage phlogopite ± K-feldspar ± magnetite ± anhydrite ± diopside ± suiphide, overprint the western contact between matrix-bearing breccias and megacrystic porphyries. Coeval with cemented breccia formation, intrusions of biotite phyric monzodiorite occur at the matrix-bearing breccia-wall rock contact and in the matrix-bearing breccias. Biotite-phyric monzodiorite and the principal cemented breccia domains are co-spatial and syn-Cu-Au. Drilling has outlined a zone of >0.3% hypogene Cu approximately 20-100m thick, 500m wide and 400m in length that strikes 100, dips 45-60°S, and has a semiellipsoidal morphology. This mineralisation is coincident with potassic (stage D) alteration and infill. Cu-poor, diopside-dominated (calc-[potassic]) alteration formed contemporaneously with, and locally flanks, potassic-D infill. Sulphide minerals are zoned from a core of chalcopyrite-bomite, to chalcopyrite>pyrite, to pyrite>chalcopyrite out to pyrite only. Garnet-bearing peripheral propylitic alteration overlaps with a pyrite and Au-halo and locally overprints potassic and calc-Q,otassic) assemblages. Based on electron microprobe analysis, systematic spatial variations in Ti-content and Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ of infill biotite are evident. Increases in Ti-contents and Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ overlap with positive gradients in Cu concentration, taken with interpreted alteration reactions, this suggest Cu-deposition is caused by decreasing fO₂ coupled with an increase in pH at 420-475°C. Low log(fH₂/fHF)₂, determined from infill biotite, distinguish potassic fluids in the Southwest Zone, and other alkalic porphyry deposits, from fluids in calcalkalic systems and reflects the contrasting magmatic composition.
