Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Introduction Liquid consumption is essential for daily function and may also play a role in sleep regulation. The aim of this study was to assess 1) the association between the frequency of liquid consumption and sleep patterns; and 2) the different types of liquids on the association between liquid consumption and sleep. Methods Participants included 597 children ages 9-13 years old from the China Jintan Child Cohort Study. To assess child liquid intake, children self-reported the types of liquids consumed and the frequency these liquids were consumed. To assess sleep patterns, both parents and children reported sleep patterns using the parent-reported Child Sleep Habit Questionnaire (CSHQ) and a child self-reported questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and independent sample t-tests analyses were performed to examine the differential effects of liquid consumption frequency and sleeping habits. Results Overall, a slight dose-dependent relationship between liquid consumption and sleep quality was observed. Less sleep problems and improved sleep quality were observed for water (bedtime resistance, sleep anxiety, night awakenings, parasomnias, sleep-disordered breathing, daytime sleepiness; p<0.05) and milk (parasomnias, sleep-disordered breathing, p<0.05) consumption. Caffeinated soda tended to increase sleep problems (sleep-disordered breathing, p<0.05). Sleep onset delay had a different pattern from that of other subscales, in which water increased sleep problems and caffeinated soda decreased sleep problems. There was some discrepancy between parent- and self-reported parasomnias, but sleep disordered breathing showed consistent patterns. Conclusion Children who consumed more liquid, especially water and milk, were more likely to experience less sleep problems. However, caffeinated soda consumption may be linked to increased sleep problems. Findings suggest that school children may need consume more healthy liquids for better sleep patterns. Future randomized-controlled trial studies are needed to verify these findings. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Introduction Autonomic nervous system dysfunction and reduced heart rate variability (HRV) have been reported in individuals with mood disorders, a phenomenon likely to be influenced by sleep disturbances. Several studies have previously assessed HRV in individuals with major depression or bipolar disorder across the entire sleep period. This study investigated whether distinct heart rate (HR) and HRV profiles across wake, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and non-REM (NREM) sleep are linked to unipolar versus bipolar mood disorders in individuals with sleep complaints. Methods Polysomnographic data was retrospectively collated for 120 adult patients with sleep complaints and depressive symptoms referred to a specialized sleep clinic for sleep assessment [60 diagnosed with bipolar disorder (70% female, mean age= 43.4±11.6 years) and 60 age-matched cases diagnosed with a unipolar depressive disorder (68.3% female, mean age= 43.2±11.6 years)], and 60 age-matched healthy controls (68.3% female, mean age= 43.4±12.6 years). HR and time-based HRV parameters were computed on 30-second segments and averaged across the night for wake and sleep stages. Results Significant group by sleep stage interactions showed that the unipolar and bipolar groups had lower standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN) and vagal tone root mean square of successive R-R interval differences (RMSSD) compared to controls during NREM sleep ( p≤.001) and REM sleep (p≤.003), but not during wake (p>.050). The unipolar group had significantly higher heart rate than controls regardless of sleep stages (all, p≤ .042), while the bipolar group had higher heart rate than controls only during NREM 2 (p=.012) and NREM 3 (p=.009) sleep. These interactions persisted after excluding individuals taking antipsychotic, lithium, anticonvulsant, and cardiovascular medications. Conclusion While additional research is required to account for manic and euthymic states, as well as the impact of psychotropic and cardiac medications, and potential confounders like variations in body mass index, the present findings suggest that the sleep-based autonomic signature of depressive states differs across different types of mood disorders and could potentially inform the development of biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Abstract (sommario):
The gnre "hija'" (satire), of a great importance in the works of al-mutanabbi, mingles intimately with all the other genres. Through satire, the poet endeavours to show all forms of falseness, deceit and sincerity of men of his time. The method followed intends to be inspired of recent research works on stylistic. The latter meant to be the study of the relation ship between style as original means of expression and satire as a specific form of language. This study is made of three axes : 1. The formal structure of satire and its organisation. 2. The form of the expression at these levels : lexicothematic, syntaxic, rhetorical and morpho-semantic. 3. The analysis of a model satire of the genre

Lefebvre, Philippe. "Salomon, le temple & le palais : étude du troisième livre des Règnes de la Septante". Paris 4, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1993PA040222.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Septuagint is the Greek translation of the Hebrew bible, worked out during the 3rd and 2nd centuries before our era. In the 3rd book of reigns (also called the 1st book of kings), the oldest text of the Septuagint propounds a description of Solomon’s temple and palace which is rather different from the account given by the Hebrew Masoretic text. The thesis deals with the discrepancies between both texts and tries to understand the purpose of the Greek text. 12 chapters are distributed in 3 main parts. In the first part the point at issue is the confusion, obvious in Greek, between temple and palace. Solomon seems to build the temple for himself and that is an alarming suggestion about the sanctuary. The translators may also have wanted to preserve the mystery of the place where god dwells on earth: he can be neither held nor enclosed. The 2nd part is devoted to the descriptions as such: technical words, materials. . . It is very difficult to locate the different spots within the temple (here again god's dwelling place is mysterious). In erecting these buildings, Israel seems to re-appropriate former cults. In the temple, there are hidden rooms which hints at some shameful secrets. The 3rd part offers a portrait of Solomon as a constructor. He is the sacred king who inaugurates the temple in an eschatological feast, foretelling the last visitation of god. But he is also the one who is anointed by the strange king of Tyre, has relations with the worship of Bacchus and with the house of Dan that the Septuagint presents as a relative of giants and demons. The characteristics of the Septuagint have inspired some passages of the New Testament and traditions among Jews and Christians

Paris 4, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA040113.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Queen of Sheba plays an important role in the traditions of the three monotheist religions as well as in literature and arts. The paths that take us from the religious texts to the literary myth show the various figures that she embodies, from wisdom to lust. The exploration of the types of intertextual relationships and of the relationships between arts, reveals the variations undergone since the initial scenario, the persistent aspects of the myth, as well as the way in which the mythical potential of the founding texts operates in the structure and the literacy of the texts. The analysis of the modalities of appearance of the Queen of Sheba allows us to consider works as relays, circumlocutions and variations, and reveals that in the imagination the queen of Sheba is an ideal model and her myth is an exemplary story

White, Elizabeth. "Giving up the dead? : the impact and effectiveness of the Human Tissue Act and the Guidance for the Care of Human Remains in English Museums". Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1344.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the impact and effectiveness of Human Tissue Act 2004 (HTAct) and the Guidance for the Care of Human Remains in Museums (Guidance) upon museums in England and the human remains housed within those museums. Whilst the HTAct is a piece of legislation targeted primarily at the medical profession, two sections are pertinent to museums. Firstly, Section 16 legislates for the establishment of mandatory licensing for various activities involving human remains; including the storage and display of human remains under 100 years old. Secondly, Section 47 gives nine national museums previously bound by the British Museum Act 1963, the power to de-accession human remains under 1000 years old from their collections. Conversely, the Guidance is a document developed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport in order to guide Section 47 affected museums and other institutions holding human remains through the growing number of requests to repatriate human remains and to offer a set of best practice recommendations relating more generally to the treatment of human remains. In order to understand the impact and effectiveness of the HTAct and the Guidance, an England-wide museum survey was undertaken; the results of which form the basis of this research. Museum responses to this survey would seem to indicate that, other than financially, the HTAct has had little impact upon museums and that, two years after the publication of the Guidance, many museums had still not implemented its best practice recommendations. Indeed, despite the HTAct and the Guidance, results indicate that there are still a number of unresolved issues relating to the treatment of human remains in English museums.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis aims at understanding how the figure of Solomon, since the “Book of the acts of Solomon” mentioned in 1 K 11:41, until the time of Josephus, was read and re-read by successive historiographers in the light of the socio-religious circumstances of their own time. It is based on a study of the problems involved in the transmission and the textual reception, with a detailed attention on the problems arising from the Septuagint, and on a narrative analysis and set of themes of the accounts that are studied (1 K 1-11, 1 Chr 28-2 Chr 9, 3 Kgdms 1-11 and AJ 7:343:211). In 1 K, Solomon is severely judged on the basis of the exile and presented as a crafty, inaccurate and apostate king who, in spite of his building the temple, has betrayed God’s covenant. Later on, the Chronicler, the author of 3 Kgdms (and the translators) and Josephus strive to rebuild this image positively, in the light of the postexilic worship, or by a process of hellenization, but always with a consistent implicit diplomatic concern to spare possible non-Jews readers

Labban, Rima. "Les figures mythiques dans la culture arabo-islamique médiévale : l'exemple des "Mille et Une nuits"". Paris 4, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003PA040058.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The study of the mythical figures of king Salomon and the calife Haroun al-Rachid in the Arab-Islamic medieval culture, through The Thousand and One Nights, amounts, firstly, to questioning the making and animation of the imaginary representations in a society governed by religious interdictions to express its deepest desires. It consists, secondly, on examining the mechanisms and the mode of productions of the fancy, its instruments, and, the moments and places of its irruption. The study of these two figures is then situated at the center of the medieval fancy and at the same time at the intersection of the historical, political and social domains. To understand how a historical personality transforms into a politico-heroic myth, in other words, to answer the question of how figures become mythical, one should, at the same time, call upon the historical method and the literary analysis, from a narrative and semiotic point of view. The answers to these interrogations should lead to a definition of the mythical figure in the medieval Arab-Islamic culture and to a definition of the status of the tale in this culture

Abstract (sommario):
Using a probabilistic approach for exploring latent patterns in high-dimensional co-occurrence data, topic models offer researchers a flexible and open framework for soft-clustering large data sets. In recent years, there has been a growing interest among marketing scholars and practitioners to adopt topic models in various marketing application domains. However, to this date, there is no comprehensive overview of this rapidly evolving field. By analyzing a set of 61 published papers along with conceptual contributions, we systematically review this highly heterogeneous area of research. In doing so, we characterize extant contributions employing topic models in marketing along the dimensions data structures and retrieval of input data, implementation and extensions of basic topic models, and model performance evaluation. Our findings confirm that there is considerable progress done in various marketing sub-areas. However, there is still scope for promising future research, in particular with respect to integrating multiple, dynamic data sources, including time-varying covariates and the combination of exploratory topic models with powerful predictive marketing models.

Abstract (sommario):
Programming is a valuable skill in the labor market, making the underrepresentation of women in computing an increasingly important issue. Online question and answer platforms serve a dual purpose in this field: they form a body of knowledge useful as a reference and learning tool, and they provide opportunities for individuals to demonstrate credible, verifi- able expertise. Issues, such as male-oriented site design or overrepresentation of men among the site's elite may therefore compound the issue of women's underrepresentation in IT. In this paper we audit the differences in behavior and outcomes between men and women on Stack Overflow, the most popular of these Q&A sites. We observe significant differences in how men and women participate in the platform and how successful they are. For example, the average woman has roughly half of the reputation points, the primary measure of success on the site, of the average man. Using an Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition, an econometric technique commonly applied to analyze differences in wages between groups, we find that most of the gap in success between men and women can be explained by differences in their activity on the site and differences in how these activities are rewarded. Specifically, 1) men give more answers than women and 2) are rewarded more for their answers on aver age, even when controlling for possible confounders such as tenure or buy-in to the site. Women ask more questions and gain more reward per question. We conclude with a hypo thetical redesign of the site's scoring system based on these behavioral differences, cutting the reputation gap in half.

Abstract (sommario):
In the present investigation, waste frying oil, a non-edible vegetable oil is used as a diesel fuel substitute. Performance and emission tests were carried out in a naturally aspirated, single cylinder, direct injection diesel engine with and without preheating the waste frying oil and with fuel injection pressures of 190 bar, 210 bar, 230 bar and 250 bar. Performance parameters such as brake specific energy consumption and brake thermal efficiency and emission parameters such as NOx and smoke density were evaluated at various operating conditions. Increasing the injection pressure with and without preheating the fuel is found to improve the performance and reduce smoke emissions. At these conditions, the NOx concentration is seen to increase, however it is lower than pure diesel operation.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Natural gas meters are often used to measure flows below their minimum design flow rate. This can occur because of inaccurate flow projections, widely varying flow rates in the line, a lack of personnel available to change orifice plates, and other causes. The use of meters outside their design ranges can result in significant measurement errors. The objectives of this project were to examine parameters that contribute to measurement error at flow rates below 10% of a meters capacity, determine the expected range of error at these flow rates, and establish methods to reduce measurement error in this range. The project began with a literature search of prior studies of orifice, turbine, and ultrasonic meters for background information on their performance in low flows. Two conditions affecting multiple meter types were identified for study. First, temperature measurement errors in low flows can influence the accuracy of all three meter types, though the effect of a given temperature error can differ among the meter types. Second, thermally stratified flows at low flow rates are known to cause measurement errors in ultrasonic meters that cannot compensate for the resulting flow profiles, and the literature suggested that these flows could also affect orifice plates and turbine meters. Several possible ways to improve temperature measurements in low flows were also identified for further study. Next, an analytical study focused on potential errors due to inaccurate temperature measurements. Numerical tools were used to model a pipeline with different thermowell and RTD geometries. The goals were to estimate temperature measurement errors under different low-flow conditions, and to identify approaches to minimize temperature and flow rate errors. Thermal conduction from the pipe wall to the thermowell caused the largest predicted bias in measured temperature, while stratified temperatures in the flow caused relatively little temperature bias. Thermally isolating the thermowell from the pipe wall, or using a bare RTD, can minimize temperature bias, but are not usually practical approaches. Insulation of the meter run and the use of a finned thermowell design were practical methods predicted to potentially improve measurement accuracy, and were chosen for testing.
