The goal of this research is to examine how zines--self-published alternative magazines that are part of Do It Yourself (DIY) independent media scenes-- are used to assert subjectivities. This research examines the entire bodies of work of five zinesters. It situates the work in New Literacy Studies, narrative research, and other zine scholarship. By exploring zinesters' works as they use it to perform literacy over time, this research redefines zines. It moves zines away from being seen as simply a way for young women to be active cultural producers and situates zines in autobiographical writing where life narratives are created and recreated as zinesters perform differing subjectivities over time. Through narrative analysis, this research looks at the following five zinesters and the subjectivities they perform at different stages in their zine career. Cindy Crabb creates a confessional space within her zines to tell secrets and stories around her body: specifically survivor narratives. Alex Wrekk positions herself as part of the punk scene and transforms her personal identity as she participates in the zine and punk scenes. Kelly Shortandqueer asserts transgender subject positions throughout his zines and the writing of his transnarrative. Lauren Martin creates autographic zines through her artist subjectivity. Davida Breier shares small stories throughout her zines, as is exemplified in her Intros. The results of this work allows for exploration into zines as a cultural literacy practice. More importantly, it examines and defines zines as life-long literacies--those literacy sites that people choose to participate within during varying times of their lives and not only during specific situational occurrences such as school or work--and zine creators as permanent writers. Zines allow a better understanding of what it means to perform literacy work in meaningful ways which permit participants to examine and reexamine, define and redefine, and construct and reconstruct subjectivities as they move through time and various social, cultural, and personal scenes.

This thesis project pursues the strategies to create urban design interventions that preserve and encourage multi-religious harmony in the contested sacred topography of Jerusalem. First, I observed the environmental and social qualities of religious coexistence by studying a pilgrimage site in Jerusalem currently shared by groups from the three monotheistic faiths, the Masjid al-Nabi Da'ud (the Mosque of the Prophet David) on Jerusalem's present-day Mt. Zion district, which is adjacent to the southern wall of the Old City. I then proposed to transform the neighborhood surrounding the pilgrimage complex by honoring the observed dynamics of coexistence, in an attempt to create a harmonious, multi-religious space in Jerusalem's sacred landscape. My intention is to create a pluralistic public sphere that serves to promote dialogue and reconciliation between the adherents of the three Abrahamic traditions. Such a place of religious harmony, to borrow the words of Louis Kahn, will present an urban environment that can serve as "a place of the example". The new district will serve as the headquarters and residency of an institution for ecumenical dialogue called the Nathan Foundation for Monotheism, which will be run by a board made up of members of the three different traditions (including the current religious parities dwelling on Mt. Zion) and partner initially with the Open Society Institute and Soros Foundations Network. In the spirit of the virtue of "hospitality", traditionally associated with Abraham, the center of the Nathan Foundation will house venues for research, exhibition, celebration and worship for each of the three faiths.
(cont.) The new district will develop along a public promenade offering dramatic views of Jerusalem from one of its highest promontories. I will attempt to induce, in the pilgrim and inhabitant, a sense of wandering between cultures and faiths, an experience that will help reconstitute, with the aid of Jerusalem's religious topography, something of that reflective journeying of Abraham through the cosmopolitan swath of the Fertile Crescent.

The theme of the sublimity of Zion in Jl 4,15-17 shows an image of YHWH who takes care of loving way for his people. In the face of natural disasters and war, the experience of the relationship between the people of Judah and Jerusalem, YHWH does awakening consciousness that the faith must be greater than the fear of an uncertain future. This study concludes that Jl 4,15-17 has as background the theological tradition of Zion, but with a theocentric focus. The sublimity of Zion in Jl 4,15-17 is linked with the main theme of yôm YHWH and develops in parallel to this. This relationship implies an integral unit of the themes in the book. The yôm YHWH, present in all chapters of the book of Joel, presents itself the positive direction and salvation to Judah-Jerusalem. The sublimity of Zion in Joel 4,15-17 corroborates with this yôm, being an oracle of salvation for the chosen people. The text also reveals points of contact terminological and thematic with book of Joel and some books of the corpus of the Twelve Prophets. The theological concept of tradition of Sion, by preference for the chosen people in the Holy City of Jerusalem, from the viewpoint of the book of Joel, marks an important aspect of biblical faith vetero-testamentary.

Texte intégralCurrent scientific knowledge of the ringtail (Bassariscus astutus ) is limited, thus impeding appropriate management decisions. Ringtails in Zion National Park, Utah, are rarely seen, but are involved in increasing occurrences of negative interactions with park visitors and employees such as food theft and denning in buildings, interactions which are harmful to both parties. To manage this conflict, an update to the general knowledge about the status of the population is required as the only previous study on ringtails in this area was conducted in the 1960s. Using noninvasive techniques provides dependable large-scale population information. I used two noninvasive detection methods in combination to establish a robust occupancy estimate of the ringtail population in Zion National Park. Ringtails were detected in 2 of 3 focus areas in the park, but at low densities. This study included the development of a novel method to individually identify ringtails by their footprints. I used the Interactive Individual Identification System (I3S) software to determine if individuals could be identified using the pattern formed by papillae and ridges of the footpad. Ringtails' footpad prints consistently resulted in a unique pattern recognizable by simple visual analysis and a computer-aided analysis of the prints in a database; however more research is needed for the applicability using field data. Ringtail densities were highest in the areas of greatest human activity. The proximity to humans may be impacting ringtail diet and consequently their health. I collected scat in areas of high and low human use to quantify the change in diet resulting from food acquired around human establishments. Ringtails living in areas of high human activity exhibited a change in diet, including the presence of human trash such as foil and plastic; this has implications for ringtail health and human safety. Ringtails acquiring food from human sources may increase their activities around buildings and areas with high human activity, resulting in an increased chance of direct and indirect human-ringtail interactions. Active management of human activities and regular building maintenance is required in the future to decrease negative consequences of ringtail use and presence in areas of high human activity.

The years from 1869 to 1890 constituted a time of change and worry for the Mormon community in Utah Territory. The completion of the transcontinental railroad and the federal government's increasingly vehement attacks on Mormon polygamy, among other factors, led to worries among older Mormons about the future of their community. They particularly worried about the commitment of the upcoming generation of Mormons, who had not converted to the faith but had just been born into it. This thesis examines how those feelings of worry intersected with ideas about reading. Older Mormons recognized a potential ally in reading materials that could help young people become believing, productive members who would help ensure the future of their community. This thesis argues these older Mormons borrowed many elements from other US literary cultures and repurposed them for distinctly Mormon ends, including achieving theosis (chapter 1), navigating changing dynamics in Mormon families (chapter 2), and building their utopic society, Zion (chapter 3). It examines not only the rhetoric surrounding "good" or "bad" reading but also the institutionalized programs and actions, such as the 1888 MIA Course of Reading (chapter 4), that shaped Mormons' world of reading. Such an examination begins to sharpen our understanding of the relationship of print and religion in America and what reading meant to Mormons.

Texte intégralThe purpose of this dissertation was to examine the ways in which the media products of the non-profit organization Latinitas revealed ideologies and discourses about identity. The organization purports to empower Latina youth via media education. The media products include two online magazines that feature content for and by the members of the organization. The media products also include a Web site where members of the organization can post and update individual blogs and videos. While not the focus of this dissertation, it is important to note that the organization also hosts various after-school programs and workshops that teach its members about issues related to media education.
The study was managed in two stages. First, a content analysis of the two magazines was conducted to reveal which ideologies were featured in the magazine articles. Literature suggests that the two most relevant identities to Latina girls are gender and ethnicity. As such, special attention was given to ideologies that directed attention to those identities. Second, a discourse analysis of the blogs and videos hosted on the Web site was performed to reveal whether the featured ideologies carried over into the media product of the members of the organization. Results suggested that the magazines focused on issues of gender while mostly ignoring issues of ethnicity. The blogs housed on the Web site reflected the focus on gender but were also the only place where talk of ethnicity was dominant. The videos were generally not used as a means to express identity and were vehicles for displaying the activities of the organization.

Texte intégralThe National Park Service’s mission is to preserve and protect cultural heritage sites that have value to the American public. In the summer of 2016, I interned with Zion National Park Cultural Resource Program to conduct archaeological stabilization and preservation of a prehistoric site through public outreach. During my internship, I discovered the program did not adequately address imminent and long term needs to manage cultural resources threatened by human-caused disturbances. The lack of understanding towards prehistoric populations that lived in Zion Canyon and difficulties in past management practices contributed to increasing vulnerability to valued cultural resources. Discontinuous management practices throughout the park’s history led to unknown, vulnerable cultural resources deteriorating due to natural and human-caused disturbances including erosion, vandalism, and neglect. Public archaeology and outreach contributed to a large portion of the project and I developed important procedures to include and train the public who find value in protecting and preserving cultural resources in our National Parks.
In this thesis, I examine cultural resource management practices at Zion National park pertaining to the stabilization and preservation of a prehistoric site and analyze data from the site to provide a more encompassing site history for future researchers and the development of management practices. The review of past management practices and regional prehistoric history will enable me to create better procedures for managing vulnerable cultural resources at Zion National Park. The management procedures will include best practices for initiating public outreach programs in order to include audiences beyond the archaeological community to help preserve and protect cultural heritage at our National Parks.

This research is outlined between the zines and letters universes, starting from the analysis of the zinesters correspondence sent to the zine-catalogue Esputinique, made in Fortaleza from 2002 to 2005. We are interested in understanding the modes of being constructed among a group of zinesters-correspondents which organized themselves around meetings permeating the writing of letters with artistic, affective and literary construction elements. Such letters referred to the meetings, to the sense of belonging to the net, to creation, to experiences while they happen and can be read as a collective and shared field diary, slowly built and in a very fragmented way. They are physical registers of the existence of the net, and beyond, one of the ways through which it is weaved. To look for entanglements between these two universes is to face hybrid zones between public and private, ways of creation, multiple temporalities, art and communication.

After briefly evaluating the different existing tracking methods, a solution based on GPS and an augmented inertial rotation tracker is further evaluated by trying them out in a real setting. While standard unaugmented GNSS trackers are unable to provide the level of accuracy necessary, a differential GPS receiver is found to be capable of delivering good enough coordinates. The final result is a new version of ZionARA that actually allows a person to walk around at the site of the castle and see the castle as it most likely once stood. Source code and data files for ZionARA are provided on a supplemental disc.
