Steacy, David. « Zhengyi Tianshi gao Zhao Sheng kouje The Celestial Masters of Orthodox unity gives Zhao Sheng oral instruction : a translation and analysis ». Thesis, McGill University, 2012. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=110656.

Texte intégralThis thesis highlights, through a comparative approach, the construction of gendered representations in China through two great works of Chinese classical literature, the Sou shen ji (In Search of the Supernatural) by Gan Bao (286-336) and the Liaozhai Zhiyi (Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio) by Pu Songling (1640-1715). These Zhiguai collections contain wonderful tales involving human beings and supernatural beings. Our aim is to study and compare the different types of supernatural women in these two collections: women-revenants, goddesses and women-yao. We have used Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Propp's morphology of the folktale and the Comparative Approach. In the course of our analysis, we were able to observe and analyse the similarities and differences between supernatural women and human men in terms of their family and social status, requirements for women and men, feminine aesthetics and male hegemony. Finally, we analysed the representations of supernatural women and men in the light of regional, political, moral, folkloric, cultural and philosophical (Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism) factors

Thesis Abstract Zhao, Zhi-qian was a talented calligrapher in seal, clerical, regular and running scripts. His unique “Northern Wei Calligraphy” was especially known to the world. Zhao, Zhi-qian was the most famous calligrapher of the stele school in the late Qing Dynasty in succession to Deng, Shi-ru, and has had a far reaching influence on the generations thereafter. This thesis aims at exploring Zhao, Zhi-qian’s calligraphic thoughts, including the cultural origins, theories, arts and creations, and values of Zhao’s calligraphic thoughts. Through the comprehensive and insightful research, the calligraphic thoughts system of Zhao, Zhi-qian’s is organized and established and can serve as reference for generations to come. This research finds that Zhao, Zhi-qian’s calligraphic thoughts originated from his studies of bronzes and stones. He followed several mentors of the Changzhou School and practiced “philology.” He was practical, realistic, and rigid in pursuing his studies. He abided by the guidance in the calligraphy theory of Ruan, Yuan and Bao, Shi-chen’s and referenced Deng, Shi-ru’s calligraphy experience and engraving concept. With the innovative idea of “Engraving comes from calligraphy and calligraphy prints with engraving”, he saw the influence of the studies of bronzes and stones. Therefore, studies of bronzes and stones were indeed the underpinnings for Zhao, Zhi-qian’s calligraphic thoughts and practices. Zhao, Zhi-qian’s calligraphic thoughts system began with the belief of the artistic inheritance, “To learn from history”. He combined stele and model calligraphies to form his unique “Northern Wei Calligraphy.” The artistic innovation is based on the concept of “all schools converge”. “Painting with calligraphy” and “engraving with calligraphy” further open up the multi-originality of “Engraving on top of engraving” innovation. The consolidated and plain style of “exploring ancestry in plainness” was his practice of contemporary aesthetics after a large number of bronze and stone cultural relics were excavated. “Creating one’s own style” was the central thought that guided Zhao, Zhi-qian’s calligraphic creations and innovations. It was the most invaluable to implement and practice in person. “Do not concede to the predecessors” was the expectation of Zhao, Zhi-qian toward his own calligraphic advances. Criticizing preceding calligraphers in an impartial and penetrating way requires an accurate historical view on calligraphy, only with which one can have insightful analysis and define a way for advances and mastery. Zhao, Zhi-qian’s calligraphic success was underpinned in this set of calligraphic thoughts system. Through the research in this thesis, Author hopes that future efforts can be dedicated to the exploration of the “Calligraphic Thoughts of Calligraphers” in order to understand in depth the calligraphic knowledge and beliefs of each calligrapher and guide innovations and practices, establishing the foundation for constant advancement in calligraphic arts.

This research aims to analyze two Sheng works:"Wang Zhao-jun" and " Princess Wencheng "." Wang Zhao-jun " was created in 1979 by Cao Jian-guo and Zhang Fu-quan, with the theme of " Wang Zhao-jun’s "story. The "Princess Wencheng" is based on the historical allusion, was created in 1981 by Gao Yang, Zhang Shi-gong and Tang Fu. At the almost same time, how the composers use the Sheng to perform and present the similar subjects, and what’s the differences and similarities between of them? Both of them triggered the author's research motivation. First, the author will sort out the life background of the composer, the theme of the music composition and the structure of the music by the data collection and music analysis. Then, through the interview with the composer, the composer’s performance and creative background, the style and concept of creation, the motive, as well as connotation of the composition of music will be further understood. In the interpretation of music combined with all above the research results and the author's point of view to propose the appropriate interpretation of music. Finally, I hope that this research will do a little bit contributions for the Sheng music and related academic research.

This study utilized the Harvard case-writing method to illustrate the dilemma of organizational change in a tradition company. Although the case company has profit every year, the president foresees the possible crisis of the company's future operating development, and then, he started an organizational change project in order to defuse the crisis. But the factory manager resisted this action. How should President and top level managers do to solve this issue in order to carry out the organizational change project smoothly? There are two parts in this study including case context and teaching manual. From this case study, readers can realize the cognitive dissonance and organization inertia are main obstructive factors and learn the workaround solutions as the enterprises facing crisis and taking organizational change actions, so that enterprises can minimize the resistance of change. We combine the theories and practices and take use of case description to make the readers understand and resolve the problems as facing similar situations in the future.

Cardiac operations and heart infarctions may lead to ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injuries that induce cardiac failure, morbidity, and mortality. Therefore, the use of preventive drugs or strategy to reduce high severity and high mortality is important in the cardiac disease research. Sheng-mai-yin (SMY) is one traditional Chinese formulation containing Radix Ginseng, Radix Ophiopogonis and Fructus Schisandrae that has been used to treat cardiovascular diseases for over 700 years. However, the protective mechanism is not fully understood. Gui-zhi (GZ) was also shown its cardioprotective ability. We aimed to test whether the SMY could attenuate I/R injury and whether the GZ remixed SMY (GZ+SMY) could have better effect than the only SMY. In this study, we used tube feeding SMY, GZ, or GZ+SMY for 7 days as a pretreatment to explore its protective effect in the male Wistar rats with cardiac I/R injury by left ascending coronary artery ligation and release. There were six groups in our experiment: sham control, SMY control, GZ+SMY control, I/R SMY I/R, and GZ+SMY I/R group. The electrocardiograph (ECG) and arterial blood pressure were continuously and real-time measured throughout the experiment. The left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) was also measured to evaluate the cardiac contractility and function. The myocardial infarct size was indicated by MOOR blood flow image and Evans blue/TTC staining. The H&E staining was used to investigate the histopathologic changes. I/R injury increased ST segment elevation, LVEDP level, infarct size, erythrocyte accumulation and leukocyte infiltration in the heart. Seven days of Sheng-mai-yin pretreatment significantly reduced the parameters of the LEVDP, infarct size, erythrocyte accumulation and leukocyte infiltration in I/R hearts compared to I/R group. However, GZ remixed SMY did not exert much better effect than SMY alone in our study. According to above data, we conclude that GZ+SMY displayed a similar effect as SMY to protect rat heart against I/R injuries.

The essay takes “Sheng Wu Ji” and “Hai Guo Tu Zhi” which Wei Yuan published after the Opium War as the major text to analyze; besides, other relative text such as “Yi Sao Ri Kou Ji” and “Mo Gu” also are the reference material. The essay will discuss the purpose and content which Wei Yuan constructed western ideology and performed through Chinese ideology. The predecessors who researched on Wei Yuan mostly regarded “learning advantages of the Western” which he advocated as the performance of moving towards modernization; they thought of Wei Yuan as a great man who made a breakthrough. By studying “Sheng Wu Ji” and “Hai Guo Tu Zhi” carefully, the essay concludes that Wei Yuan’s purpose to construct western ideology is to resist Western invasion and to find ways to make the country wealthy and the military powerful. The Western invasion ignited Chinese to defend Sinocentrism. In terms of Chinese Ideology, Wei Yuan developed the classic further, “Spring and Autumn Annals” especially. It played the role to explain the times and connect Chinese and Western ideology. The statecraft thought transformed traditional sense of urgency into actions, and it totally appeared in the process of construction of Chinese and Western ideology. Wei Yuan started from introspection of the times and advocated strategies of statecraft. He believed only keeping stable domestic affairs can the Chinese court system revives. According to the purpose and process which Wei Yuan construct Chinese and Western ideology, it not only proved the value of moving towards modernization but also included a traditional Chinese scholar’s superiority complex towards Sino Culture-Specific. He expected to base on interpretation of classics, figuring out the strategies which made the country wealthy, the military powerful and the world peaceful.

In the opinion of this paper, the current understanding on the metaphysics history in Wei and Jin Dynasties paid too much attention to the development of the philosophy course, and kind of neglected the solicitude of social situation, which resulted in the ignorance and even deletion of many ideologists from the metaphysics history. Therefore, this writer tried to put those ideologists in Western and Eastern Jin Dynasties who used to be neglected by the previous scholars back in the spotlight, through the demonstration of the “Fan-Xuan” phenomenon. This paper followed the clues left by several articles, including Pei Wei’s “Chong You Lun”, Sun Sheng’s the interpretation of I Ching and his “Lao Zi Yi Wen Fan Xun” and “Lao Dan Fei Dai Sheng”, Wang Tan Zhi’s “Fei Zhuang Lun” and “Gong Qian Lun”, as well as Dai Kui’s “Fang Da Wei Fei Dao Lun” and “Zhu Lin Qi Xian Lun”, in order to discuss how they argued and debated with metaphysicians and how they refuted the thoughts put forward by Lao Zi and Zhuang Zi, or queried to the metaphysic trend triggered by the thoughts of Lao Zi and Zhuang Zi, or advocated that the thoughts of Lao Zi and Zhuang Zi were covered under a sacred religion, or conciliated and compromised the two kinds of thoughts from Confucianism and Taoism in a manner of restricting courtesy based on emotion, and observed how scholars in Western and Eastern Jin Dynasties viewed the relation between “The Zi-ran and Ming-jiao”. This paper, through the review and analysis on Pei Wei, Sun Sheng, Wang Tan Zhi, and Dai Kui, expected to compensate the part of the metaphysics history in Wei and Jin Dynasties that have been currently overlooked, and further attempted to take the “Fan-Xuan” phenomenon as another supporting perspective for observing the evolvement of “The Zi-ran and Ming-jiao” during the period of Western and Eastern Jin Dynasties.

The current edition of the Taiwanese Herbal Pharmacopoeia contains more than two hundred species of Chinese medicine. However, when compared with the 2005 edition of PRC (People''s Republic of China) Pharmacopoeia and 14th edition of Japanese Pharmacopoeia, the Taiwanese Herbal Pharmacopoeia dwarfs in coverage and is in need of supplement in the revised edition. The establishment of stipulation around the chemistry specification and index composition analyses, therefore has become a critical concern. During the experiment, we selected 40 commonly used items based on two conditions: 1) items that are recorded in PRC Pharmacopeia but not in Taiwan Herbal Pharmacopeia; and 2) deletings items that are rarely or never used in Taiwan. For each of the 40 herbs, twenty specimen were collected or purchased around Taiwan and performed with five tests, and analzyed. The five tests include: 1) desiccation ; 2) total ash; 3) acid-insoluble ash; 4) diluted ethanol-soluble extraction; and 5) water-insoluble extraction. In addition, we performed HPLC analysis on the following herbs: Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Scrophulariae Radix, Rehmanniae Radix, Forsythiae Fructus and Polygoni Multiflori Radix. ABSTRACT Master Sheng-yen wrote many books with the purpose of making complicated Buddhist teachings accessible to the public. Among his books, many recorded his trips overseas for different purposes including missionary work. His large amount of writings about traveling make him one of the most prolific travel literature writers in Taiwan. Journey to the Homeland of the Buddha (Foguo zhi l? 佛國之旅) records his trip to India and Nepal with his followers. This trip serves the purpose of providing an experience of witnessing the demise of Buddhism in India to motivate his followers to devote themselves in the tasks for the continuation and development of Buddhism. In this book of this fifteen-day journey, Master Sheng-yen shows us how a chan master viewed the world with gratitude and religious sensitivity. Through this literary work, the practice of “Enhancing the quality of people, building a pure land in the human realm” has been fulfilled by the followers as Master Sheng-yen’s guidance in how one should adjust one’s minds in response to different situations along the journey provides a chan-like training. In this thesis, I will analyze how Master Sheng-yen teach chan through various situations and settings by a detailed textual analysis as well as a contrast with other travel literary works with trips to India as a destination. This analysis and contrast clearly demonstrates Master Sheng-yen’s chan training in a daily life setting, especially while traveling.
