Résumé :
Yasuhiko Sugimura’s review of my book La Religion dans la philosophie (Hermann, 2021) for the present issue of Études Ricœuriennes / Ricoeur Studies affords me an opportunity to return to my intention in this work. I verify the heuristic hypothesis that the complex relationship that Ricoeur’s philosophy established with religion can be explained by a process of secularization [laïcisation] of Ricoeur’s religious convictions. In dialogue with the aforementioned review, I propose to reconsider certain aspects of my criticism of Ricoeur on the question of truth.

Takata, Masao, Yasuhiko Harasawa, Sadek Beloucif, and James L. Robotham. Coupled vs. uncoupled pericardial constraint: effects on cardiac chamber interactions. J. Appl. Physiol. 83(6): 1799–1813, 1997.—The effects of pericardial constraint on cardiac chamber interactions were evaluated by mathematical model analyses based on a novel concept of coupled vs. uncoupled pericardial constraint. We hypothesized that the nature of pericardial constraint can be classified as a “coupled” constraint exerted by uniform liquid pressure or an “uncoupled” constraint exerted by regional surface pressure. The numerical solution of the model of atrioventricular interaction produced the characteristic waveforms in venous flows and right atrial/ventricular pressures in classical pericardial diseases. Coupled constraint accounted for the patterns in cardiac tamponade; uncoupled constraint accounted for those in constrictive pericarditis. Analytic solution of the model of ventricular interdependence demonstrated that coupled constraint (tamponade) produced greater gains in ventricular interdependence, increasing the occurrence of pulsus paradoxus, whereas uncoupled constraint (constriction) produced a greater effective right ventricular elastance, increasing the likelihood of Kussmaul’s sign. Thus the concept of coupled vs. uncoupled constraint may offer a coherent framework to understand the characteristic steady-state and respiratory-induced hemodynamic events in multiple forms of pericardial diseases.

Résumé :
The title of Yasuhiko Tomida’s paper ‘“Separation” of Ideas Reconsidered: A Response to Jonathan Walmsley’ portends sustained criticism of my analyses of Locke’s views on abstraction. The impression is misleading. My conclusion, that Locke’s theory of abstraction was one of mental separation of parts of images, is cited several times, but mainly as an opportunity for Professor Tomida to commence his own interpretation of Locke’s views. There is relatively little direct consideration of the arguments advanced for my conclusions. This observation is not intended as a criticism, but rather as a means to understand Tomida’s enterprise. He has advanced an analysis of Locke’s theory of ideas in a series of publications. His recent ‘Sensation and Conceptual Grasp in Locke’contains the kernel of this interpretation. After considering the origin and nature of important ‘simple’ ideas, viz. solidity, extension, power, existence, and unity, the paper ends with a brief discussion of the abstract idea of a triangle. His subsequent response to my work is a continuation of these arguments. Rather than immediately countering Tomida’s response to my interpretation, I will first place his views on abstraction in the context of his larger project, and only then consider his views on abstract ideas, and their relation to my position.

Gao, Bingyu. « Japanese conservatism and foreign policy : a focus on prime ministers Nakasone Yasuhiro, Koizumi Junichirō and Abe Shinzō ». Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/17916/.

Résumé :
This dissertation investigates the influence of Japanese conservatism on the government’s foreign policy. The core set of questions of this research consists of the following: what is the position and status of conservatism in the spectrum of post-war Japanese political thinking? How has conservative thinking (especially conservative intellectuals) affected the perceptions and behaviour of the leaders and how has the leaders’ foreign policy-making reflected their conservative thinking? What is the mechanism by which conservative thinking exerts its influence on Japan’s foreign policy-making? What are the different ways in which different Japanese prime ministers exploited conservative intellectuals and vice versa? And, how did this double-way exploitation affect foreign policy-making? To address the research questions, first the place of conservatism among post-war Japanese ideologies is examined. Post-war Japan experienced a variety of ideological trends, including the partial revival of certain pre-war ideologies such as conservatism. Second, as the dominant ideology, how conservatism affected Japanese political practices, or what is the connection between conservative thinking and foreign policy is addressed. Third, Prime Ministers Nakasone Yasuhiro, Koizumi Junichirō and Abe Shinzō are taken up as cases to study the mechanism of how conservative thought affects foreign policy-making. The role of the concept of conservatism in the policy-making process has been extensively studied in political science and international relations. Likewise, “from concept to foreign policy” is the focal question of this study. Specifically, the aim is to find out how conservative intellectuals affect real politics (realpolitik) and foreign policy. Three paths are investigated: first, direct conversions from conservative intellectuals to conservative politicians; second, conservative intellectuals acting as political advisors to the three prime ministers, thereby providing them with intellectual support; and third, conservative intellectuals disseminating their thinking in Japanese society using their own influence, and eventually affecting government policy through the force of public opinion. This study draws on Robert A. Dahl’s pluralist theory of democracy, which suggests that political outcomes arise through competitive interest groups, rejecting the assumption that the state (or government) is the sole rational actor in politics. Using this insight, the dissertation examines the plural factors contributing to the origin and formation of the prime ministers’ conservative thought, including education, early environment, family legacy, and the relationships of the three prime ministers with their political advisors. In the Conclusions, a comparison of the conservative thought and foreign policies of the three prime ministers is carried out, examined in the context of the contemporary social ethos and international environment, leading to an elucidation of the causal mechanisms linking Japanese conservatism to Japanese foreign policy.

Since the single layer graphene are observed by Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, the quantum phenomena emerging from graphene as attracted many physicists’s attentions in the two dimensional lattice structure. One of the important quantum phenomena is the unconventional quantum Hall effect which the Hall plateau (Chern number pattern) does not show successive integers but only odd integers. However, there are some other problems to calculate the quantum Hall conductivity, such as the determination of the Chern number pattern from a specific lattice structure and the reduction of the computational time. Motivated by these issues, I use Yasuhiro Hatsugai’s topological approaches to investigate the quantum Hall effect of other lattices. I use Hatsugai’s method to calculate the quantum Hall conductivity in two different lattices: Kagomé and star lattices. I find that the Dirac-like regions of quantum Hall conductivity also exists in both Kagomé and star lattices, which is similar to graphene. Unlike the graphene, the star lattice shows complicated Chern number structure in the electron-hole like regions. Hopefully, the Chern number pattern of the star lattice predicted by us can be determined by experiments in the near future.

Résumé :
For a leap of progress in structural deign of nuclear plant components, The late Professor Emeritus Yasuhide Asada proposed the System Based Code. The key concepts of the System Based Code are; (1) life-cycle margin optimization, (2) expansion of technical options as well as combinations of technical options beyond the current codes and standards, and (3) designing to clearly defined target reliabilities. Those concepts are very new to most of the nuclear power plant designers who are naturally obliged to design to current codes and standards; the application of the concepts of the System Based Code to design will lead to entire change of practices that designers have long been accustomed to. On the other hand, experienced designers are supposed to have expertise that can support and accelerate the development of the System Based Code. Therefore, interfacing with experienced designers is of crucial importance for the development of the System Based Code. The authors conducted a survey on the acceptability of the System Based Code concept. The results were analyzed from the possibility of improving structural design both in terms of reliability and cost effectiveness by the introduction of the System Based Code concept. It was concluded that the System Based Code is beneficial for those purposes. Also described is the expertise elicited from the results of the survey that can be reflected to the development of the System Based Code.

Résumé :
Nintama Rantaro is a long running TV anime series in Japan, which is produced by a large number of staff members. In the present study, 228 episodes of this series were selected to analyze the relationships among the staff members and the elements in the episodes, using correspondence analysis and cluster analysis. Numbers of storyboard writers, animation directors, screenplay writers and directors, and factors of the stories, e.g., representative expressions, motions of the main characters and emotions of the main characters, were counted, and a cross-tabulation table was constructed. The results of the correspondence analysis of the table showed that a three-dimensional space illustrated the correlations in the table with the cumulative contribution ratio of 42 %. The results of the cluster analysis with Ward’s method showed four clusters. Each of the four clusters coincided to each quadrant on the plane spanned by the first two dimensions. In the first quadrant, an animation director Tsuyoshi Ichiki was plotted. In the same quadrant, fighting motions of the main characters were plotted. Tsuyoshi Ichiki is one of the most proficient anime directors for battle scenes. Therefore, this indicates that the animation of episodes which includes battle scenes is chiefly directed by Tsuyoshi Ichiki in Nintama Rantaro. In the second quadrant, experienced animation directors, Emiko Niiyama and Kazue Tamari were plotted as well as a screenplay writer, Mitsuharu Yoshida who frequently writes the screenplay for the initial episode of a season. Moreover, characteristic expressions in Nitama Rantaro, such as the escape of the soul from the body, use a regional dialect “bayai” instead of “baai”, and the appearance of a character with breaking the screen, were plotted in this quadrant. This implies that the experienced animation directors and the screenplay writer use characteristic expressions especially for the initial episode of a season. In the third quadrant, an animation director Setsuko Shibuichi, who previously directed animations with sad stories, was plotted. The sad emotion of a main character is also plotted in the same quadrant. This indicates that for a sad episode, Setsuko Shibuichi directed the animation. In the fourth quadrant, screenplay writers, Satoshi Kimura and Kazuko Iwasaki are plotted as well as an animation director, Yasuhiro Endo, and various directions of motions of the characters are also plotted. This means that they are proficient dynamic motions of characters. In this way, the relationships among the staff members and the elements of the anime episodes are clarified in the context of Nintama Rantaro.
