Résumé :
This study examines how students in Finland (16-18 years of age) constructed meaning and knowledge in a collaborative online reading situation. Student pairs ( n = 19) were asked to write a joint essay on a controversial issue. First, the pairs discussed the topic freely to activate their prior knowledge. Next, they gathered source material on the Internet. Finally, they composed a joint essay. The data were collected using an interaction approach to verbal protocol data, along with video screen captures. In the analysis, three units were employed: episodes ( n = 562) for describing online reading practices; utterances ( n = 944) for identifying collaborative reading strategies; and collaborative reading patterns ( n = 435) for clarifying how the student pairs constructed meaning and knowledge. Collaborative reading patterns were categorized according to a four-part model. A hierarchical cluster analysis was conducted to identify students’ collaborative reading profiles. Five collaborative reading profiles emerged: co-constructers (two pairs), collaborators (two pairs), blenders (six pairs), individually oriented readers (four pairs), and silent readers (five pairs). Overall, it appeared that some students were capable of working in pairs, whereas others had a stronger preference for working alone. Collaborative profiles might offer teachers both an evaluative and an instructional tool to support collaborative interaction in their classrooms.

Résumé :
AbstractThe well known Wiener-Kuratowski explicit definition of the ordered pair, which sets (x,y) = {{x}, {x,y}}, works well in many set theories but fails for those with classes which cannot be members of singletons. With the aid of the Axiom of Foundation, we propose a recursive definition of ordered pair which addresses this shortcoming and also naturally generalizes to ordered tuples of greater length. There are many advantages to the new definition, for it allows for uniform definitions working equally well in a wide range of models for set theories. In ZFC and closely related theories, the rank of an ordered pair of two infinite sets under the new definition turns out to be equal to the maximum of the ranks of the sets.

Résumé :
Innovation is a collaborative act. Thus, a lot of attention has been paid to teamwork as the prevalent approach for innovation in companies. However, teams also present limits, due to conflicts and compromises when converging. This study, which focuses on the development of innovative directions, explores the nature of collaboration by looking at the purest unit of collaboration: the pair. We isolate the case of pair collaboration and investigate, through empirical investigations, the sensemaking process people accomplish and how it is affected by those tensions that affect teams when innovating. We observe how innovation unfolds when people move from creating individually, in pair and finally in team. Findings suggest that the pair creates an intimate environment where innovative thinking, alignment and engagement flourish and that it is a good intermediate step towards teamwork. This paper acknowledges an underestimated dynamic of innovation, pair collaboration, which has real potential to address one of organisations’ most problematic challenges: people engagement and convergence towards an innovative direction.

Résumé :
It was found out that under turning wheel pairs, complete tool failure occurs as a result of ductile fracture of cutting wedge. It was also found out that the process of ductile fracture of a tool is governed by creep of local volumes of tool material adjacent to tool contact areas caused by its severe thermo-mechanical load in machining of hard-drawn surfaces of wheel pairs. The method was proposed to effectively reduce thermo-mechanical load on tool contact areas under machining of wheel pairs, while improving heat transfer from the cutting zone, which provides reduction of thermal stress of cutting wedge and improvement of the efficiency of cutting tool.

Résumé :
Goal. Kinetostatic study of a statically defined hinged spatial mechanism without excessive (passive) connection of the shredding machine with two working tanks connected by a translational kinematic pair. Method. Radial and axial components of reactions in all rotating and translational kinematic pairs of the hinged statically defined spatial mechanism of the machine for processing of details with two working capacities connected among themselves by translational kinematic pair at its work at idling were determined on the basis of kinetostatic research. The study was performed using the computer-aided design system SolidWorks-2016 computer-aided design system, which performed a 3D model of a shredding machine with two working tanks connected by a translational kinematic pair. Results. 3D modeling of a shredding machine with two working tanks connected by translational kinematic pair in the computer-aided design system SolidWorks-2016 computer-aided design system is performed, maximum values of radial and axial components of reactions in all rotating and translational kinematic pairs of machine are determined, and the influence of total two working tanks for the increase of the maximum values of reactions in the kinematic pairs of the spatial mechanism of the machine. Scientific novelty. For the first time, the relationship between the total wheelbase of two working tanks and the change in the maximum values of reactions (axial and radial) in all rotating and translational kinematic pairs of the shredding machine was established. The allowable range of variation of the total wheelbase of two working tanks is determined, which creates conditions for long-term operation of the machine. Practical significance. It is established that the change of maximum values of radial and axial components of reactions in all rotating and translational kinematic pairs of the spatial mechanism of the galvanizing machine depends on the total axial distance of two working capacities of the machine. The obtained research results can be useful in the design of shredding equipment with complex spatial movement of working tanks.

Résumé :
Paraeducators have become vital contributors to service delivery in special education programs. The duties of paraeducators and their performance of those duties are much discussed but not well documented. The supervision of paraeducators falls largely on the shoulders of special education teachers who are relatively unprepared to assume this supervisory role. This study served as an initial exploration into (a) the relationship between 18 matched pairs of teachers and paraeducators assigned to resource programs, (b) the duties that these paraeducators performed, (c) their preparation for the job, (d) the quality of their work, and (e) the thinking of the teachers who held supervisory responsibility. Results indicated that the paraeducators served primarily in instructional roles and that their performance was satisfactory. Teachers were divided in their beliefs about the fundamental role of paraeducators---whether they were assistants to the teacher or assistants to the student. Teachers said, in many different ways, that they were reluctant to provide supervision, and preferred to think of paraeducators as peers rather than supervisees.

Résumé :
There is a concept in linear algebra called a tridiagonal pair. The concept was motivated by the theory of $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs. We give a tutorial introduction to tridiagonal pairs, working with a special case as a concrete example. The special case is called totally bipartite, or totally bipartite (TB). Starting from first principles, we give an elementary but comprehensive account of TB tridiagonal pairs. The following topics are discussed: (i) the notion of a TB tridiagonal system; (ii) the eigenvalue array; (iii) the standard basis and matrix representations; (iv) the intersection numbers; (v) the Askey--Wilson relations; (vi) a recurrence involving the eigenvalue array; (vii) the classification of TB tridiagonal systems; (viii) self-dual TB tridiagonal pairs and systems; (ix) the $\mathbb{Z}_3$-symmetric Askey--Wilson relations; (x) some automorphisms and antiautomorphisms associated with a TB tridiagonal pair; and (xi) an action of the modular group ${\rm PSL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ associated with a TB tridiagonal pair.

Résumé :
High productivity when performing finishing technological operations, as well as technological processes of mixing loose fine-dispersed substances, can be achieved with the use of equipment in which working containers perform complex spatial movement. To date, various types of developed felting machines with complex spatial movement of working containers are known. Each type of such equipment corresponds to the implementation of various felting technological operations – separation of parts from sprues, grinding or polishing of products, cleaning of metal parts from corrosion or mixing of loose fine-dispersed substances. During the operation of the rolling equipment, various reactive loads arise in the kinematic pairs, which depend on the design features of the machines. With the use of the automated design system “SolidWorks”, 3D modeling and further strength research of a model of a rolling machine with a working capacity with complex spatial movement and variable volume was performed. In the kinematic chain of the machine under study, an additional moving connecting rod link with rotational and translational kinematic pairs is used. During the performance of the force study, the reactions in all rotational and translational kinematic pairs were determined, the influence of the change in the interaxial distance of the working capacity and the additional moving link of the connecting rod on the maximum values of the reactions in the kinematic pairs of the machine was investigated. The presented results of analytical studies can be applied in the relevant design bureaus of machine-building enterprises at the stage of designing equipment with complex spatial movement of working capacities and felting technological processes.

Résumé :
Semantically associated and unassociated word pairs were embedded in normal meaningful sentences and in sentences that were semantically anomalous throughout The influence of lexical context was isolated via comparison of responses to the second words of the associated and unassociated pairs The influence of sentence-level context was isolated by comparing responses to the same words in the two sentence types Subjects of high, medium and low working memory capacity (as evaluated by the reading span test) showed modulations of event-related brain potentials in response to lexical context In contrast, only the high- and medium-capacity groups were responsive to purely sentence-level semantic context The results demonstrate that sentential context influences the processing of words in intermediate sentence positions at normal reading speeds but that the on-line utilization of this context is more demanding of working memory than single-word contexts

Résumé :
Abstract Objectives It is well known that age differentially impacts aspects of long-term episodic memory (EM): Whereas a binding deficit indicates that older adults are less capable than younger adults to encode or retrieve associations between information (e.g., the pairing between two memoranda, such as lock – race), item memory is relatively intact (e.g., recognizing lock without its original pairing). Method We tested whether this deficit could be corrected by facilitating establishment of the bindings in working memory (WM) through adapting the semantic relatedness of studied pairs according to participants’ ongoing performance (Experiments 1 and 2). We also examined whether this was evident for the long-term retention of pairs that were not tested in WM (Experiment 2). Results The results revealed matched binding and item memory in WM and EM between age groups. Most importantly, older adults required increased semantic strength between word pairs to achieve similar performance to that of younger adults, regardless of whether pairs were immediately tested during the WM task. Discussion These findings indicate that relying on their superior semantic memory can correct the commonly exhibited profound deficit in binding memory in older age.

Résumé :
Previous studies have shown poor working conditions and poor mental health among au pairs. However, there are limited longitudinal approaches to these conditions. Therefore, the main objectives of this study were to assess the occurrence of depressive symptoms longitudinally and to analyze the association between sociodemographic characteristics, working conditions and violence at work with depressive symptoms over time among Spanish-speaking au pairs living in Germany. A prospective cohort study was performed with three measurement intervals, which included 189 participants. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) models were implemented to estimate the association between predictors and depressive symptoms. Au pairs who worked >40 h per week were more than three times more likely to experience depression than those who did not (OR: 3.47; 95% CI: 1.46–8.28). In addition, those exposed to physical violence were almost five times more likely to suffer from depression (OR: 4.95; 95% CI: 2.16–9.75), and au pairs who had bad schedule adaptation to social and family commitments had twice the risk of depression than those who did not (OR: 2.24; 95% CI: 0.95–5.28). This knowledge could be of interest for future au pairs, host families, au pair agencies and policy makers. Together, they could improve awareness and monitoring of au pair working conditions.

Résumé :
AbstractWe show that some of the properties of log canonical centres of a log canonical pair also hold for certain subvarieties that are close to being a log canonical centre. As a consequence, we obtain that, in working with deformations of pairs where all the coefficients of the boundary divisor are bigger than ½, embedded points never appear on the boundary divisor.

Résumé :
This study explored learners’ attitudes toward collaborative writing in pairs and small groups (fours and sixes) in a synchronous web-based environment. Sophomore pre-service teachers in one intact class in the Philippines (n=31) completed the same collaborative writing tasks using Google Docs. In three separate out-of-class sessions, they first worked in pairs, and then they were assigned to either groups of four or groups of six in the succeeding two sessions. After completing the tasks, they were asked to complete a post-task questionnaire. The learners had an overall positive attitude toward peer collaborative writing in a web-based synchronous environment as it helps them to develop the content better, find appropriate vocabulary, and improve the grammatical and mechanical accuracy of the texts they produced. Students highly appreciated working in pairs and groups of four. In pairs, they felt that it is easier to manage text-chat deliberation, resolve concerns, and attend to each other’s suggestions. In groups of four, they acknowledged the increase of peer resources for knowledge sharing and in ensuring the accuracy of their language use. Hence, the majority complained that a group of six is not that conducive in a real-time text-chat environment. When asked about their preference, most students would prefer to work in a similar task and environment in pairs. These findings on learners’ attitudes toward collaborative writing concur with the previous literature in face-to-face educational settings and open new insights on synchronous web-based collaborative writing via text-chat.

Résumé :
Abstract Introduction Aging is accompanied by deterioration in both working memory (WM) and long-term memory (LTM), though the reason is not well understood. Sleep may play a role in young adults, but the findings in older adults are not as clear. In addition, older adults show better memory for positive memories, whereas youngers tend to hold on to negative memories. The prefrontal cortex has been implicated in this emotional memory bias. The current study investigated the role of working memory (a prefrontal task) on emotional memory consolidation across sleep and wake in young and older adults. Methods In the morning, 93 younger (18–39) and 121 older (60–85) adults took a WM task and encoded neutral or negative word pairs, and gave valence and arousal ratings for each pair. After a wake or polysomnography-recorded sleep condition, memory for the word pairs was tested plus valence and arousal ratings. Results Youngers had better overall memory (p<.001), with older adults showing better memory for neutral compared to negative word pairs (p=.04), as well as increased positivity (p=.02), which was correlated with LTM performance (p=.009). In contrast, youngers performed better on the negative word pairs (p=.01), but no change in ratings and no association between emotional reactivity and LTM. Further, WM was positively related to memory in youngers (r=.38, p=.02), but not in older adults. Lastly, no role for sleep likely due to the lack of an immediate test. Conclusion we found that the positivity bias in aging in both memory and valence, with increasing positivity associated with better memory. We found a robust relation between WM and LTM in youngers but not older adults. Our findings are consistent with the socioemotional-selectivity theory that posits that aging is associated with a relative suppression of negative information while WM may play a role. Résumé :
The dual formulation of support vector regression involves two closely related sets of variables. When the decomposition method is used, many existing approaches use pairs of indices from these two sets as the working set. Basically, they select a base set first and then expand it so all indices are pairs. This makes the implementation different from that for support vector classification. In addition, a larger optimization subproblem has to be solved in each iteration. We provide theoretical proofs and conduct experiments to show that using the base set as the working set leads to similar convergence (number of iterations). Therefore, by using a smaller working set while keeping a similar number of iterations, the program can be simpler and more efficient.
