Résumé :
AbstractThis article will explore one of the most significant strikes by migrant workers in Britain during the 1970s and the subsequent company closure the year after their victory. In May 1974, a predominantly South Asian workforce at the Imperial Typewriter Company in Leicester went on strike over unequal bonus payments and discrimination in promotion. The shop stewards committee and Transport & General Workers Union branch refused their support and the workforce split partly on racial lines. The strikers stayed on strike for almost 14 weeks until they emerged victorious. Though it appears as a central reference point in histories of migrant experience in Britain, the strike and closure has garnered little systematic, primary research. This article will fill this gap through the use of published sources and extensive unused archival deposits. During the strike part of the largely South Asian workforce sought to break with the racialized division of the workforce between different groups, skill levels, and work-types. Almost immediately after the strike ended in victory the company announced its intention to close down the vast majority of its British production. In Hull 1400 jobs were lost and in Leicester over 1600 were to go. This article shows that whilst the strike might have been the start of a politically, culturally, and intellectually significant period of significant protagonism by Britain's first-generation black and racialized working class, it also marked the beginning of the end of an industrial model dependent on the hyper-exploitation and racialized subordination of their labor. The closure was framed by contemporaries and subsequent historical accounts as a dispute marked more by the end of empire than worker obsolescence. As an article in the Guardian on the closure of the plants was put it in January 1975, it was ‘The day that Imperial&s empire fell'. Yet it might be more accurate to understand the strike as an early premonition of the globalisation of manufacturing production which was to emerge strongly in the 1980s and 1990s. The experience of Imperial Typewriters highlights the central importance of racialized labour hierarchies and immigrant counter-militancy in post-war Britain. The Imperial Typewriter Company provides a case study of how worker resistance to labour intensive modes of capital accumulation, in relatively low capital intensive industries, during a global crisis of capitalist profitability, was followed by the decision of a multinational corporation to immediately transfer its production overseas. The closure of Imperial Typewriters therefore offers a means to reconceptualize how we understand the 1970s as a period of interlocking crises, as well as the major shift of power from labour to multinational capital which emerged in its wake. The findings of this article indicate that British workers were significantly disempowered before the electoral victory of Margaret Thatcher in 1979. Recentering labor conflict in the history of technological obsolescence can offer alternative perspectives on why the British left and trade unions were unable to resist the rise of neoliberalism.

Résumé :
This paper studies workers’ agency in the context of government austerity measures in contemporary, crisis-hit Greece. It focuses upon the spatial aspects of two cases of worker mobilisation. The first of these involves powerworkers who supported widespread popular protests against a new property tax designed to raise government revenues. Importantly, the government had sought to collect this tax by adding it to people's electricity bills, a novel method which generated massive opposition. The second concerns strike activity engaged in by steelworkers employed at the Greek Steelworks SA in Aspropyrgos, in the capital region of Attica. These workers were responding to the company's taking advantage of new laws designed to increase flexibility in labour markets by allowing employers to fire more people than they otherwise would have been allowed to do. The paper analyses the different tactics employed in both of these quite different efforts to challenge Greek austerity measures. In analysing these different tactics we explore the role of in-place and trans-local networks of solidarity in response to government policy. A deeper understanding of such factors, we would suggest, may contribute to strengthening the prospects of workers’ struggle in places and spaces where painful capital devaluation diminishes workers’ rights and dismantles social and employment protections.

Résumé :
The issue of lengthy strikes in South Africa has been a cause for concern since it destabilises the economy and can result in a loss of employment if it is not managed properly. A strike that takes too long to be resolved causes anger towards strikers, so creating a fertile environment for the eruption of violence between striking and non-striking workers. Damage to property and harm to civilians has been reported where striking workers have become violent during a strike. It appears that the existing remedies fail to curb long strikes and resultant violence, as unions and members continue with their action despite the granting of an order of interdict to stop the conduct. To solve the problem of long and consequently violent strikes, the article advocates the introduction of a compulsory interest arbitration in the labour relations law of South Africa. A compulsory interest arbitration will force the parties into arbitration once it is established that the strike has continued for an unreasonably long period without a solution. The use of compulsory interest arbitration will not be unique to South Africa, as other countries such as Canada and Australia use it in their labour relations systems – which helps them deal with long and possibly harmful or violent strikes. The article argues that lessons can be learned from these countries on how South Africa can deal with its own protracted strikes. The article further proposes that the LRA be amended to include a provision that will enable the Minister to intervene where the parties fail to reach agreement on disputed issues, and where it is in the public interest to do so. Introducing a compulsory interest arbitration in the labour relations system could limit the right to strike. However, the article argues that such a limitation may be justified in terms of s 36 of the Constitution.

Résumé :
The issue of violent and lengthy strikes has been a feature of South Africa’s industrial relations for a while now. There are no mechanisms in place to curb violent strikes even though their effects are visible in all corners of the Republic. Violent and lengthy strikes have devastating effects on the economy, cause injury to members of the community and non-striking workers, and more particularly poverty as employers would retrench workers if their businesses do not make profit as a result of prolonged non-production. In the mining sector where strikes are a common feature, it has been reported that employers have lost billions of rands through lengthy and violent strikes. The article acknowledges the developments brought about by amendments in the Labour Relations Act, which appears to be short of addressing the situation. The article proposes that if interest arbitration can be introduced into the Labour Relations Act, the situation may change for the better as employers and unions will be compelled to resolve their dispute(s) within a short space of time. It further submits that a strike should be allowed to proceed only if it is lawful and does not involve violence. In addition, the Labour Court should be empowered to intervene in instances where violence has developed and force the parties to arbitration.

John D. Rockefeller, Jr.’s reactions to the Colorado Coal Wars resulted in the creation of the Employee Representation Plan, better known as the Rockefeller Plan. While labor historians identify the Rockefeller Plan as a dynamic shift in labor-management relations, this article focuses on the lesser studied portion of Rockefeller's reconstruction plan, his program of soft reform and its effect on the construction of masculinity in the industrial West. For Junior, restructuring the work environment and the relationship between management and labor left reconstruction incomplete, and thus vulnerable to future crises. Beginning in 1914, Rockefeller provided support for local and national social organizations to work throughout southern Colorado in order to impart middle-class values to his workers. He believed that reconstructing their social and cultural values—from language to sexual behavior—would remove any socialist influences, and create a better workforce. By applying this type of pressure, Junior helped create an environment that supported local anti-vice movements, and validated a growing belief that law enforcement and legislation could be used to curb vice. Following the deadly strike, Rockefeller's attempts to transform his public image and industrial workers not only have implications for labor history, but also social and gender histories, in particular the construction of masculinity in the American West.As I understand you are a member of the Baptist Church. So am I. But I think you must be a very inconsistent one. You teach Sunday school in New York and let the devil run your business in Colorado. You and your managers are totally responsible for all the bloodshed that occurred in Colorado. If you had lived up to the law there would have been no strike in Colorado. It is human nature to suffer rather than resent and men do not go on strikes for the fun of it.1

Résumé :
Purpose On 12th June 2015, a strike by contract workers was declared at Rampur terminal, All India Business in oil corporation (ABC) Ltd. The strike had disrupted the normal services of the terminal. Under such circumstances, Mr Ravi Sharma (Head human resources of the eastern region, ABC Ltd.) was unable to decide how to save the company from such a disorderly situation without any increased loss of production and manpower cost liabilities. Could Mr Ravi Sharma resolve the issue of strike through an approach of strategic rapprochement when the disruptions made by workers and local miscreants went out of control? Design/methodology/approach In-depth interview in the year 2019 was conducted with the protagonist Mr Ravi Sharma and the trade union members at the regional office of ABC Ltd., Kolkata and Rampur Terminal, respectively, to convert the narratives in the form of a fictitious case study. Four rounds of interviews were conducted by the author to complete the data collection procedure. The company™s-related information was sourced through a secondary database furnished by company™s officials. However, the data about the company, the key characters and other recognizable information have been disguised to preserve the confidentiality of information. Findings The strike was called by the contract workers at Rampur terminal for two primary reasons, namely, wage increase and giving preference to local people for employment whether regular or contract. Mr Ravi Sharma could pacify the unforeseen situation by adopting two-pronged strategies, namely, first, he could successfully gain the confidence of the union leader and secondly, set the environment for the conciliation proceeding so that agreement settled will not be failed to be implemented. Originality/value The case uses a system perspective of Industrial relation proposed by Dunlop (1958) to highlight the interplay between employer, government and trade unions influenced by politics and mafia that determine eventually the industrial peace in the organization.

Résumé :
Remittance, labor migration and the significance of the female role in the process of labor migration have recently become entrenched in many developing countries, such as Indonesia. The influential role these female migrant workers play in supporting their own families and in their self-fulfillment is of significance and worthy of being fully expounded and discussed. As breadwinners, these female migrant workers strive to pursue higher education by working their way through college. Qualitative in-depth interviews and focus group discussions were used to obtain five Indonesian female migrant workers' opinion and experiences about their experience of being a worker and a student in Taiwan. The data in this study were analyzed and evaluated with thematic analysis. This study describes the factors which cause the Indonesian female workers to become migrant workers in Taiwan. This includes getting high-paid jobs, shouldering the responsibility for supporting their own families, and pursuing self-fulfillment overseas. Besides, this study has investigated the difficulties and challenges that female Indonesian migrant workers had encountered while working and studying at the same time. On the whole, as caregivers, most of them often fail to have a flexible schedule to study due to the temporary jobs assigned by their employers. Also, some employers are unwilling to allow them to pursue higher education for feat that they would not concentrate on their own work. Above all, it is these female migrant workers that can define what their lives truly mean as migrant workers on their own, and that can align their talents and ambitions with their pursuits of higher education. This study provides a new exploration of how the female migrant workers’ gained a sense of self-fulfillment by pursuing higher education with working and studying at the same time. Facing a variety of challenges and hindrances, their persistence and perseverance can be further examined for those who are interested in studying this field deeper. Résumé :
A National-Proletarian Epic of Short Stories. Ivar Lo-Johansson’s Statarna This essay explores Ivar Lo-Johansson’s epic collection of short stories Statarna (1936–37). The collection is chronologically ordered and centres on the lives of rural proletarians (statare) in Sweden from the concluding decades of the 19th century to the first decades of the 20th century. Ivar Lo-Johansson is generally regarded as an icon of Swedish working-class literature, and Statarna is one of the real cornerstones of Lo-Johansson’s self-created public myth. This article aims to show that the basic ideological position of the author and his epic is based on national stereotypes (a point that may be further supported with reference to his 1920’s travel books). Statarna contains several stories that touch upon the so-called ”Galizier question”, referring to the transport of rural workers from the south-eastern parts of Poland to Sweden. These workers became known as Galizians, even if they came from other parts of Eastern Europe. These stories articulate a xenophobic attitude to these workers in line with the dominant reaction of the trade unions and the labour movement in general at the time. The ”Galizians” were regarded as intruders, with a lower morale than Swedish workers, and representative of the lowest species of labour power. This was especially true in those cases where the Galizians were used as scabs (strike breakers) during strikes. The narrator doesn’t sympathise with the domestic rural workers when they become used to the presence of the ”intruders”. In one story, ”Galizierna”, in which a young woman is raped, the woman is avenged when the rapist (who is, of course, one of the ”Galizierna”) is killed by a horse. Such stories are also based on national stereotypes. After writing his famous epic, in the early 1940’s, the author wrote a program for what he called the ”social short story”. This program is also based on nationalist arguments. Swedish authors are advised to orient towards the process of social development in Sweden at the time. The process behind the building of the welfare state – the Swedish welfare state, which, according to the author’s preferences for national stereotypes, is described as unique – is the appropriate subject for creating a Swedish short story that can be identified as Swedish, and only as Swedish. The idea was never to create an epic with close ties to working-class literature internationally.

Based on numerical simulations carried out using numerical methods of continuum mechanics, the influence on the depth of craters, formed in steel barriers of various strengths, geometric and kinematic parameters of elongated cylindrical copper strikers, simulating elements of a cumulative jet, in the range from 0.3 to 8 km/s. For description the behavior of materials of the impactor and barrier, the model of a compressible elastic-plastic medium with a variable value of the yield strength. Determined that the classical hydrodynamic theory of the penetration of a cumulative jet into a barrier is not takes into account the effects of the inertial movement of the barrier after triggering separately taken element (aftereffect). The existence of three regimes is distinguished shock interaction-high-speed, when the elements behave like a liquid body, are worked out, but not inhibited; low speed, when the elements behave like solid body and are decelerated as a whole and intermediate, when the elements are decelerated and are deformed at the same time. It is shown that the braking mode of copper elements at high-speed impact on a steel armored barrier is realized at speeds smaller 0.8-1 km/s. It is shown that when interacting with an obstacle, high-speed fragmented cumulative jet, the total depth of armor penetration will be greater, than this is predicted by the classical hydrodynamic theory of penetration, and the more more, the higher the speed of the elements and the greater the distance between them on the one hand and less strength of the barrier on the other side. Résumé :
Introduction: BW IPSO is an organisation that started out as a variety of small organisations in the late 1970. By offering people with a mental illness the possibility to live in sheltered housing, with the guidance of mental healthcare workers, the organisation intended to improve the quality of life for this population. Over the years the organisation grew, merged and became BW IPSO. We now offer 118 places of supported living, going from group homes, to small appartements provided by the organisation, as well as guiding people in their own (social) home. Description: Throughout the years, apart from housing and mental health, other life domains became more and more important. The mental healthcare worker became a case manager . In our multiprofessional team we follow the principles of FACT and SRH . If the resident wishes so, the case manager can also become a care coordinator. The principles of SRH comprise of three key aspects: presence-oriented, recovery-oriented and strength-oriented. So together, the resident and mental healthcare worker, will explore every life domain and investigate if the resident wishes to ameliorate or change something on a particular domain. Self-direction in the process is crucial. The life domains are physical health, mental health, administration, living and general daily life activities, religion and meaning, meaningful daily activities/work, social network, learning. The mental healthcare worker walks next to the resident throughout his/her path. A path that may lead to all different kinds of settings, f.e. specialized residential (mental) healthcare, community health centres, ambulatory psychologist/psychiatrist but also a workplace, regular welfare organisations, family, friends… When a resident decides to leave our organisation, (s)he can also choose to stay in ‘follow-up’. This means that the mental healthcare worker will still see this person but less frequent. It is a way to prevent fractions in the care continuum and gives the very important opportunity to shift to a more intensive form of care when needed. Providing continuity in care is essential in our line of work. To make this possible, BW IPSO invests maximum efforts to form partnerships with other organisations or initiatives. Building relations in health systems is vital. Innovations in such systems are affected by collaboration. In making these investments, we aim to give our residents the possibilities to try new things, make connections and improve overall quality of life. Conclusion: Over time, many healthcare services have become fragmented, people who are less empowered miss out on proper care. This also applies for a majority of people who suffer of a (severe) mental illness. As an organisation we strive for continuity of care, collaborative partnerships, patient centred care with maximum ownership. We achieve this with a multidisciplinary team of experienced mental health workers in partnership with other organisations and the network of de person in need.

Résumé :
AbstractIn this article, the implementation of a standardized assessment battery for the evaluation of language in an acute care setting is described. Following an institutional shift to adopt electronic medical records, researchers and clinicians worked together to develop a technology-assisted evaluation of aphasia that would be used to assess all patients admitted to our facility with stroke. The project goal was to devise a clinical process to improve aphasia diagnosis and evaluation while remaining feasible within constraints imposed by the acute care setting and the electronic medical record. Utilizing frameworks from implementation science, the four key phases were: (1) initial considerations of the host setting, (2) creation of a structure for implementation, (3) maintenance of this structure once implementation began, and (4) improvement for future applications. A pilot implementation demonstrated that establishing and executing a minimum standardized assessment for aphasia in acute care is feasible. Retrospective medical record review of 50 aphasia evaluations in the setting of first incidence of left hemisphere stroke affecting the middle cerebral artery (25 preimplementation and 25 postimplementation) revealed that information content of medical notes was more consistent and complete postimplementation than preimplementation. Clinical implications and future directions are discussed.

Résumé :
With age, the risk of stroke increases significantly, but at the same time, there are tendencies for an increase in its prevalence in young and middle-aged people, which determines the urgency of the problem of rehabilitation treatment after stroke both in the world and in Russia. The use of digital technologies in neurorehabilitation can be very multifaceted and extensive. Telerehabilitation as an innovative direction of telemedicine is an important aspect within the framework of the national project «Healthcare» and the program «Digital Economy of the Russian Federation». P u r p o s e of the study is to analysis of the Russian experience of organizing and conducting telerehabilitation of post-stroke period in the context of the digital transformation of the healthcare system in Russia. M a t e r i a l s a n d m e t h o d s . The article used technologies for searching and selecting information using search engines (www.google.ru, www.yandex.ru), specialized and bibliographic databases (PubMed, eLIBRARY.RU), methods of analysis and synthesis, analytical data processing. R e s u l t s . The study showed that telerehabilitation has a high clinical value of adherence to the treatment of patients of post-stroke period and is not a separate type of medical activity, but an innovative therapeutic and prophylactic method that expands the possibilities of therapy and improves the process of interaction in the «doctor-patient» and «doctor-doctor» communication systems. This technology of restorative telemedicine makes it possible to increase the level of scientific knowledge, skills and abilities of healthcare organizers and medical workers in order to strengthen the national healthcare system of Russia, as well as to rationally use the scientific and practical potential of digital solutions in interdisciplinary interaction of specialists dealing with medical neurorehabilitation, significantly expanding the coverage of the population telerehabilitation services after a stroke. Résumé :
This paper intends toexplore ‘dissociation’ as the literary idea structuring Stewart’s novel.(1) The paper discusses this organizing idea on both structural and thematic levels. Some allusions to parallel instances in contemporary fiction are worked out to enhance the narrative conclusions of the study. In a strangely unique sense, Stewart’s novel strikes a historical note in as much as the narrative events occur within the temporal span of the 1950s and a topographical reality in as much as the events and characters move on the soil of Cyropolisand Media names that respectively stand for Baghdad andIraq. It may be noted that the imperial ideology is a sophisticated act. It has worked and flourished under the guises and assurances that the British arenot striving for so degrading thing as money.(2) Yet, this is one aspectof imperial reality. Another one is a sense of some painfully sought technical superiority that suffers when the intruders confront the alien. That some enlightened and non-prejudiced British individuals are disturbed by the devious workings of their own culture-patterns ultimately substantiates that dismaying destructiveness which damages the pretended uniformity of the group. But when the concept of cultural relativity is totally absent, we will have that dissociative act of racial conflict which is more damaging in its disruptive reality. The Kind of analysis being shown here requires a thoroughly different approach from that of the model adopted in Barthes's "Textural Analysis" of Poe's tale: ''The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar''.(3)

Summary Objectives: To compare two clinical workstations in one hospital with respect to technical, organizational, cultural and human factors. One clinical workstation was a GUI to the HIS. The other was an electronic patient record for stroke. Methods: Data were collected by means of in-depth interviews with end-users of both clinical workstations. The interviews were audio taped and transcribed for analysis. Results: End users assessed both clinical workstations as user friendly. Coordination between health care workers was perceived to be enhanced. However, in both situations poor communication between management, implementers and users resulted in uncertainty and skepticism about future perspectives. Furthermore, it appeared that inpatient and outpatient settings needed clinical workstations with different requirements for an optimal fit between work practices and information system. Conclusions: Regardless of the domain and content of a workstation, it can support coordination between disciplines. The communication concerning the information technology strategy deserves much attention. Finally, the requirements for inpatient and outpatient workstations differ.

Résumé :
Owing to the aging of the rural population in the hilly and mountainous areas of Japan, mowing on narrow ridges and steep slopes is done manually by the elderly—individuals over 65 years of age. Studies have shown that many accidents that occurred during mowing were caused by workers’ unstable posture, especially when mowing on steep surfaces where there is a high risk of falling. It is necessary to analyze the body movements of mowing workers to elucidate the elements related to the risk of falls. Therefore, in this study, based on a high-precision motion-capture device and a series of experiments with elderly, skilled mowing workers, we focused on the movements of mowing. We sought to identify effective and safe mowing patterns and the factors that lead to the risk of falls. In various mowing styles, compared to the stride (S) and downward (D) mowing patterns, the basic (B) and moving (M) patterns were the most efficient; however, the risk of falls was also the highest among these patterns. While mowing, workers need to pay more attention to their arm strength and take appropriate measures to reduce the risk of falls according to their age and physique. The results can be used as data for the development of fall-detection systems and offer useful insights for the training of new mowing workers.

Résumé :
A peculiar phenomenon of post-war life in the Ukrainian SSR was the return of Ukrainian emigrants. Some of them were hoping to improve the economic situation, in particular, to obtain stable earnings and housing. The other part showed active pro-Soviet position. There were analyzed newspapers articles in the of the USSR 1950’s and 1960’s. This was the period of the most intensive movement of the return. The author analyzes the origin, age, social status, political preferences and activity of the re-emigrants from the point of view of the biographical component. It is established that it was residents of Western Ukrainian lands who left from Ukraine before the Second World War the most. Ukrainians went to Europe and America: France, the United States, Canada, but the largest number of them turned out to be in the countries of Latin America, in particular, in Argentina. These were mainly family people who leaved Motherland with their families and had a goal to acquire own land and engage in farming on it. However, the success in agriculture in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil in those who returned was insignificant due to the difficult working conditions in an unusual climate. Many people were forced to leave the land and work in cities at different jobs. Agricultural workers, workers in industry and services dominated among the re-emirates. Many participated in strikes, the trade union movement, cultural organizations that had contacts with the USSR. It was determined that they were mostly family people, had several children, lived together in the countries from which they returned, and in Ukraine. Bachelors were those who returned from Canada and the United States. Relatively few tried to settle there where they were from. These were elderly people. Most showed mobility and the ability to break with their usual way of life and moved to different regions of the Ukrainian SSR and the USSR, preferred life in cities. It is necessary to understand the specifics of the Soviet press, it was very ideologized, did not told about negatives of the process of re-emigration and all its features. However, thanks to her, we can get an idea about re-emigrant portrait: the majority of there had a pro-Soviet position, were an industrious part of society, preferred working professions and sought to get an education.

Résumé :
Newly hatched herring and plaice larvae were stimulated by probes to make C-start escape responses at temperatures between 5 and 15 °C. The responses and the subsequent burst-speed swimming were recorded and analysed using high-speed video at 400 frames s−1. The muscle contraction time of the initial C-start was temperature-dependent, ranging from 22–33 ms at 5°C to 17–21 ms at 15°C. Immediately following the C-start, tail-beat frequency ranged from 18s−1 at 5°C to 35 s−1 at 15°C. Tail-beat amplitude, equivalent to 0.4-0.6 of a body length (L), and stride length, about 0.5 L, were not temperature-dependent. The escape speed ranged from 8 Ls−1 at 5°C to 15 Ls−1 at 15 °C. These results and those of other workers can be described by the equation: f=100e−99/(t+29.5)L−0.266, where f is tail-beat frequency, t is temperature and L is length.

Résumé :
SummaryThe relationship between haematocrit and cardiovascular risk factors, particularly blood pressure and blood lipids, has been examined in detail in a large prospective study of 7735 middle-aged men drawn from general practices in 24 British towns. The analyses are restricted to the 5494 men free of any evidence of ischaemic heart disease at screening.Smoking, body mass index, physical activity, alcohol intake and lung function (FEV1) were factors strongly associated with haematocrit levels independent of each other. Age showed a significant but small independent association with haematocrit. Non-manual workers had slightly higher haematocrit levels than manual workers; this difference increased considerably and became significant after adjustment for the other risk factors. Diabetics showed significantly lower levels of haematocrit than non-diabetics. In the univariate analysis, haematocrit was significantly associated with total serum protein (r = 0*18), cholesterol (r = 0.16), triglyceride (r = 0.15), diastolic blood pressure (r = 0.17) and heart rate (r = 0.14); all at p <0.0001. A weaker but significant association was seen with systolic blood pressure (r = 0.09, p <0.001). These relationships remained significant even after adjustment for age, smoking, body mass index, physical activity, alcohol intake, lung function, presence of diabetes, social class and for each of the other biological variables; the relationship with systolic blood pressure was considerably weakened. No association was seen with blood glucose and HDL-cholesterol. This study has shown significant associations between several lifestyle characteristics and the haematocrit and supports the findings of a significant relationship between the haematocrit and blood lipids and blood pressure. It emphasises the role of the haematocrit in assessing the risk of ischaemic heart disease and stroke in individuals, and the need to take haematocrit levels into account in determining the importance of other cardiovascular risk factors.

Résumé :
BackgroundDue to the COVID-19 epidemic, Chinese hospitals are forced to impose stringent regulations, which unavoidably affect patients with stroke who need continued rehabilitation and long-term disease treatment. However, there is a lack of qualitative studies in the literature on female relative caregivers of hospitalised patients who had a stroke with dysphagia during the COVID-19 pandemic.ObjectiveIn this study, we aimed to explore the experiences of female Chinese caregivers living in the hospital with patients with post-stroke dysphagia during the pandemic.DesignWe conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews.Setting(s)From May 2022 to July 2022, patients were selected from the Acupuncture and Moxibustion Ward and the Encephalopathy Ward of Shenzhen Chinese Medicine Hospital, which receives patients from across the country.Participants10 Chinese women who were caregivers of patients with post-stroke dysphagia were finally interviewed.MethodsInterviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using Colaizzi’s approach.ResultsThe primary theme was determined to be ‘kidnapped’ lives. Other sub-themes evolved to depict the lives of female relative caregivers, including inevitable tasks and challenges, precise care, a special dietary pattern, solitary and forgotten, and an elusive future. Due to the trivial nature of caring for patients who had a stroke with dysphagia, the caregivers’ lives were tightly organised and entirely dictated by the patient’s caring needs. Consequently, the caregivers felt that their lives had been kidnapped.ConclusionsIt is imperative that healthcare workers identify and understand the living conditions of female relative caregivers in the hospital, so as to determine their difficulties and needs. Finally, caregivers deserve adequate and effective support, such as technical support, financial support and nutritional guidance.

The locomotory behaviour of 12 ant species belonging to four different genera (Formicinae: Cataglyphis, Formica, Lasius; Myrmicinae: Myrmica) was studied by filming individuals during walking on smoked-glass plates. Subsequent multivariate analyses of walking kinematics and footfall positions showed marked species-specific as well as size-dependent differences in the locomotory behaviour. The geometric properties of the footfall patterns resulting from the alternating tripod gait scale to leg dimensions in a geometric manner. At high speed, footprint distances between succeeding tripods exceed maximum leg extension, indicating that ants are 'trotting' from one tripod to the next one with intermittent aerial phases. In at least one species (Cataglyphis bombycina), there is evidence for quadrupedal locomotion at the highest speed. The functional relationship between stride length (s, the distance between successive footprints of the same foot) and speed (v) was best described by a curvilinear model, s=avb. Exponent b ranges from 0.3 to 0.6 and reveals differences between species. Within species, exponent b is constant, whereas factor a scales to leg length. Females and males show metachronal interleg coordination patterns rather than the alternating tripod coordination pattern seen in workers of the same species.

Résumé :
Introduction: Hypercoagulable states are recognized, although uncommon, etiology of ischemic stroke especially in young adults under the age of 40 and children. Currently, there are no specific guidelines related to screening patients for inherited thrombophilia who are diagnosed with ischemic stroke without any identifiable risk factors. Typically, patients to be screened for thrombophilia will have prior unexplained thromboembolic events. We evaluated the association between thrombophilia and cryptogenic stroke and the role of serologic and genetic testing to establish the diagnosis. Material and methods: We performed a retrospective study through a review of EHR of patients diagnosed with ischemic stroke at our hospital between 2015- 2019 with laboratory testing for thrombophilia. The primary outcome was to identify any positive association between thrombophilia and cryptogenic stroke. The secondary outcome was to identify any change in clinical management based on thrombophilia testing results. Results: Among 35 patients included, who had an average age of 58.5 years ± 16.37 years with 36.6% under the age of 55 and 63.3% above the age of 55. Sex distribution was 40% female and 60%, male. Of 35 patients who had thrombophilia studies ordered, 9 patients had at least one positive thrombophilia test identified but none of them had any resultant change in management. 2 patients had protein C deficiency, 3 patients had protein S deficiency and 4 patients had antithrombin III deficiency, however, they were measured during the acute phase and were not repeated as an outpatient. None of the patients were found to have any Factor V and PT gene G20210A gene mutation. Lupus anticoagulant, antiphospholipid antibodies, homocysteine level were not uniformly tested. Conclusion: Only 8% of all patients who had thrombophilia testing had at least one positive study with no change in clinical management. We concluded that there is a poor correlation between inherited thrombophilia and cryptogenic stroke. The majority of our patients who had worked up done were above the age of 55 years who didn't display any symptom of thrombophilia previously. It raises a question of reflexive and inappropriate testing in the absence of clear guidelines for thrombophilia workup in the setting of cryptogenic stroke. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Résumé :
Purpose “Entrepreneurship” and “projects” both represent concepts with somewhat hazy boundaries. Interestingly, they also both represent fields of study in which academics representing those fields have worked very hard so as extend rather than delineate the same. In fact, some parts of the debate on, e.g., entrepreneurship could be criticized for engaging in “conceptual colonization,” insofar as it actively attempts to fit more and more activities under the umbrella term of entrepreneurship and/or projects, with the attendant implicit inference that they are thus fodder and resource for studies of the same. The purpose of this paper is to seek to inquire into this phenomenon. Design/methodology/approach In and of itself this could be seen as merely a case of academic (over-)branding, but the author will in the following paper argue that this also leads to “epistemological emptying,” i.e., a state where terms such as entrepreneurship and project start becoming less and less meaningful as they become more and more general, and that the strive among researchers to extend their fields can be seen as a form of symbolic violence against the same. Findings The author argues that the author can find conceptual colonization and epistemological emptying by paying critical attention to the manner in which key contributions in the field(s) consistently and uncritically try to extend the boundaries of said field(s). Originality/value By reflection on the manner in which field(s) attempts to make themselves more general may backfire and bring about epistemological emptying, the author might develop a more robust discussion regarding the importance of field boundaries and also more critically note power/knowledge ambitions in the field(s).

Résumé :
In earlier work, mathematical models of the urine concentration mechanism were developed incorporating the features of renal anatomy. However, several anatomic observations showed inconsistencies in the modeling representation of the outer stripe (OS) anatomy. In this study, based on observations from comparative anatomy and morphometric studies, we propose a new structural model of outer medullary anatomy, different from that previously presented [A. S. Wexler, R. E. Kalaba, and D. J. Marsh. Am. J. Physiol. 260 ( Renal Fluid Electrolyte Physiol. 29): F368–F383, 1991]. The modifications include the following features of rat outer medullary anatomy, for example, 1) in the OS, the limbs of long loops of Henle surround the descending and ascending vasa recta that develop into the vascular bundles in the inner stripe (IS), whereas the limbs of short loops are close to the collecting ducts; and 2) the descending limbs of short loops shift from the tubular region in the OS to near the vascular bundle in the IS, whereas the limbs of long loops are situated away from the vascular bundles in the tubular region. The sensitivity of the concentrating process to the relative position of loops and vessels was investigated in the different medullary regions. With these modifications, the model predicts a more physiological, axial osmolarity gradient in both outer and inner medulla with membrane parameters that are all in the range of measured physiological values, including the urea permeabilities of descending vasa recta reported by Pallone and co-workers (T. L. Pallone, J. Work, R. L. Myers, and R. L. Jamison. J. Clin.Invest. 93: 212–222, 1994).

Individuals strive to fulfill their essential needs by working. Every company has different work environment. The work environment tends to have impact on each individual. One of the key issues that usually occur at workplace is bullying. Workplace bullying can happen to anyone while both bullies and their victims may experience psychological effects from bullying. This study aims to see the effect of workplace bullying on job satisfaction and psychological distress among water supply company employees. This research design is quantitative using cross sectional design. The results showed that the psychological distress variable played a significant role in workplace bullying (p. <0.05). However, the job satisfaction variable does not contribute to workplace bullying (p. > 0.05). The serotonin trasporter-linked promoter region (5-HTTLPR) polymorphism of the SLC6A4 gene consists of an insertion/deletion that creates a short (S) 14 repeat or a long (L) 16 repeat allele. Genotype profile on one’s serotonergic system is correlated by their dominance in the community. Individuals with allele LL type is more likely become bullies when they are encouraged by the environment. In contrast, individuals with SS allele type with in a characteristic of low transcription activity at transporter serotonin gene tend to become bullying victims in their workplace due to they more vulnerable to stress. Employee with amygdala which easily triggered and intimidated by the dominant individuals, more likely to experience workplace bullying. Those employee who work in supportive workplace show higher job satisfaction and they are not distress psychologically.

Résumé :
Many frontline workers in the Hong Kong construction industry have to perform physically demanding work under hot working conditions, which could reduce work efficiency and time and increase the occurrence of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. This study aimed to develop a hybrid, new cooling vest to combat heat stress in the construction industry. Following the functional clothing design process, a problem identification was conducted. Preliminary ideas were formed through the analysis of available types, research, a survey, literature review, and brainstorming. The design was refined through the use of desirable phase change material packs, fans with high wind velocity/long duration, and fabrics with thin, vapor-permeable, wind/water/abrasion-resistant properties, and UV protection, as well as clothing ergonomic design that considers fit, mobility, convenience, and safety. The desirable thermal functional performance in the new cooling vest was previewed through a computer-aided design platform S-smart system. The design criteria were established and a prototype was developed. The environmental chamber testing results showed that, in a hot environment, the mean skin temperature (35.8℃ vs. 36.59℃), heart rate (110 beats/min vs. 116 beats/min), and core temperature of the subjects with the new cooling vest were significantly lower than those with the control (without the new cooling vest ). A significantly longer exercise time was obtained with the new cooling vest compared with the control (22.08 min vs. 11.08 min). Significant improvements in levels of coolness, dryness, comfort, and physical recovery were observed with the new cooling vest. Results suggest that the new cooling vest can reduce the thermal stress of construction workers and improve their work performance and comfort.

Résumé :
Abstract This study reports on the results of geological and seismological field studies conducted following the rare occurrence of a moderate-sized West African earthquake (mb = 6.4) with associated ground breakage. The epicentral area of the northwestern Guinea earthquake of 22 December 1983 is a coastal margin, intraplate locale with a very low level of historical seismicity. The principal results include the observation that seismic faulting occurred on a preexisting fault system and that there is good agreement among the surface faulting, the spatial distribution of the aftershock hypocenters, and the composite focal mechanism solutions. We are not able, however, to shed any light on the reason(s) for the unexpected occurrence of this intraplate earthquake. Thus, the significance of this study is its contribution to the observational datum for such earthquakes and for the seismicity of West Africa. The main shock was associated with at least 9 km of surface fault-rupture. Trending east-southeast to east-west, measured fault displacements up to ∼13 cm were predominantly right-lateral strike slip and were accompanied by an additional component (5 to 7 cm) of vertical movement, southwest side down. The surface faulting occurred on a preexisting fault whose field characteristics suggest a low slip rate with very infrequent earthquakes. There were extensive rockfalls and minor liquefaction effects at distances less than 10 km from the surface faulting and main shock epicenter. Main shock focal mechanism solutions derived from teleseismic data by other workers show a strong component of normal faulting motion that was not observed in the ground ruptures. A 15-day period of aftershock monitoring, commencing 22 days after the main shock, was conducted. Eleven portable, analog short-period vertical seismographs were deployed in a network with an aperture of 25 km and an average station spacing of 7 km. Ninety-five aftershocks were located from the more than 200 recorded events with duration magnitudes of about 1.5 or greater. Analysis of a selected subset (91) of those events define a tabular aftershock volume (26 km long by 14 km wide by 4 km thick) trending east-southeast and dipping steeply (∼60°) to the south-southwest. Composite focal mechanisms for groups of events, distributed throughout the aftershock volume, exhibit right-lateral, strike-slip motion on subvertical planes that strike almost due east. Although the general agreement between the field geologic and seismologic results is good, our preferred interpretation is for three en-echelon faults striking almost due east-west.

Résumé :
One in six senior citizens (age 65 years and older) living alone in the United States faces physical, cultural, and/or geographical barriers that isolate them from their peers and communities. This isolation can prevent them from receiving benefits and services that can improve their economic security and ability to live healthy, independent lives. Although it is generally known that depression is not directly related to the aging process, adults 65 years and older are more likely to experience depression due the onset of physical limitations, living alone, decreases in mobility, feelings of purposeless, cognitive decline, and fear of dying (Neff 2020). Prior to COVID-19, older adults attending senior activities centers (SAC) were instrumental in decreasing episodes of depression. This is largely based on socialization with peers, getting out of the home and, and listening to the life experiences of the much older adults. Since COVID-19, social distancing has been encouraged and the elimination of social gathering has been emphasized, which was, heretofore, expected in senior activities center settings. In the authors’ combined experience, the primary goal of successfully transitioning senior citizens returning to senior activities centers can best be accomplished by mental health care workers use of the EASE method. EASE stands for E: educate: Mental health care workers must educate older adults on the importance of social distancing in decreasing the spread of COVID-19 to the most vulnerable population (based on age and pre morbid conditions). By training staff to educate older adults on CDC guidelines relative to COVID-19 on proper handwashing, the wearing of facemasks to cover the mouth and nose, and to seek medical attention if Covid-19 symptoms are present, is essential. A: avoid: mental health care workers must constantly remind older adults to avoid the touching of the face and eyes. From picking up objects to turning doorknobs, people are constantly touching surfaces contaminated with pathogens. These pathogens can be picked up by our hands and get into the body through mucous membranes on the face — eyes, nose, and mouth — that act as pathways to the throat and lungs (Elder NC, Sawyer W, Pallerla H, Khaja S, Blacker M, 2014). S: support: Mental health care workers who work in senior activities centers. Senior should strive to support and provide an environment for older adults engaging them in opportunities for socialization, exercise, and education. The more active a senior citizen is, the healthier they will be. Recent research suggests when older adults consistently engage in social activities, they experience significant improvements in their physical, mental, and emotional health. Much of this improvement results from the ability to maintain healthy relationships and a continued sense of being part of society. E: Eliminate: mental health care workers should convey to older adults the need to eliminate activities that may contribute to contracting Covid-19, such as smoking and decreasing contact with those that smoke. Educating mental health workers on the benefits of transitioning the (EASE) of senior citizens back to attending the senior activities center will better assist this population to return to and overcome their fears to participate in the “new normal” beyond convid-19. Senior activities centers have been and will continue to be valuable community assets providing significant benefit to older adults and their families. Change in these programs will have to be significant enough to make a difference for this large demographic group. Using the EASE Method will assist with meeting the scale of change with the scale of the demand for Seniors to feel safe to return to Senior activities Centers.

Résumé :
By the beginning of the XXI century, the US had about 12 million illegal aliens and the immigration reform was evidently much needed. The Immigration Act of 1990 was significantly outdated and required revision. Additional regulations that passed in the 1990-s had to be systematized. The White House and the president George W. Bush inclined to the comprehensive immigration reform that would include an amnesty for the certain part of the illegal aliens. Some lawmakers were ready to strike a deal, but than happened the 9/11 tragedy. Immigration reform was shelved and turned into a matter of national security. Immigration reform bills were taken into consideration only in conjunction with boarder security bills. Edward Kennedy was very much aware of the issue's complexity and the need for reform; he did all he could to reach a compromise with his fellow Republicans. John McCain became his closest ally in the reform. Democrats made considerable concessions, while moderate Republicans were willing to meet them halfway, but the conservatives would not let the Congress adopt a new legislation, calling any attempt at comprehensive immigration reform an amnesty for the criminals. During the 107-110 Congresses the immigration reform was thoroughly worked through from both sides, but the proposed bills rarely got to the floor and never passed both Houses. Even though the time has passed, suggestions offered and deals reached during the Bush presidency did not lose the edge and any new immigration legislation is going be based on the 2002-2008 bills.

Résumé :
A deterministic (GEOSLIDE) and a probabilistic (PROSLIDE) microcomputer code are introduced to aid in performing rock wedge analyses based on the limit equilibrium method. The deterministic code evaluates the stability of a single rock wedge formed by discontinuities in rock through three-dimensional vector algebra, GEOSLIDE undertakes a full kinematic analysis (daylighting and obstruction), analyzes both wedge and plane sliding, and provides for anchor designs and sensitivity analyses (cohesion, friction, and water forces). Through multiple stability analyses, PROSLIDE evaluates the probability of failure for a rock slope by examining the distribution of the factors of safety from all the potential sliding wedges formed by the discontinuities of the rock mass. The probability of failure is expressed as the ratio of kinematically free wedges that have a factor of safety less than unity to the total number of wedges, PROSLIDE can form and analyze as many as 2000 different pairs of discontinuities in less than 30 min using a 25 MHz 486 IBM-compatible computer. In a worked example, the probability of failure for a fixed slope strike and loading condition is shown to vary with the slope angle, following the characteristic 'S' shape of a cumulative distribution function. The effect of an anchor force is to spread the distribution over a wider range of the factor of safety (SF), pushing many wedges into a potential upslide situation and splitting the distribution about the failure zone of the stability diagram (−1 < SF < 1). Key words : rock slope, rock wedge, stability analysis, factor of safety, probability of failure, Monte Carlo simulation.

Résumé :
Abstract Objectives Experimental evidence has revealed that exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxins directly impairs endothelial function and induces atherosclerosis progression. In the general population, despite a small number of recent studies finding a link between PCBs, and stroke and myocardial infraction, the association with early coronary atherosclerosis has not been examined yet. To examine whether dietary exposure to PCBs and dioxins is associated with subclinical coronary atherosclerosis in a middle-aged men. Methods Cross-sectional analysis comprising 1844 men in their 50 s and free of cardiovascular disease, who participated in the Aragon Workers' Health Study (AWHS). Individual dietary exposures to PCBs and dioxins were estimated by the contaminant's concentration in food coupled with the corresponding consumption and then participants were classified into quartiles of consumption. Coronary artery calcium score (CACS) was assessed by computerized tomography. We conducted ordered logistic regressions to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for progression to the categories of more coronary artery calcium, adjusting for potential confounders. Results Among the participants, coronary calcium was not shown in 60.1% (n = 1108), 29.8% had a CACS > 0 and < 100 (n = 550), and the remaining 10.1% (n = 186) had a CACS ≥ 100. Compared with those in the first quartile of PCBs exposure, those in the fourth one had an increased odds for having coronary calcium (OR 2.02, 95% CI [1.18, 3.47], p trend 0.019) and for having progressed to categories of more intense calcification (OR 2.03, 95% CI [1.21, 3.40], p trend 0.012). However, no association was found between dietary dioxins exposure and prevalent coronary artery calcium. Conclusions In this general male population, dietary exposure to PCBs, but not to dioxins, was associated with a higher prevalence of coronary calcium and to more intense subclinical coronary atherosclerosis. PCBs exposure seems to increase the risk of coronary disease in men from the very early stages. A Review of: Subramaniam, M., Scaff, L., Kawas, S., Hoffman, K. M., & Davis, K. (2018). Using technology to support equity and inclusion in youth library programming: Current practices and future opportunities. The Library Quarterly, 88(4), 315–331. https://doi.org/10.1086/699267 Abstract Objective – To understand how public youth librarians use technology in their programming and what challenges and opportunities they face incorporating connected learning into their programming. Design – Qualitative study Setting – Phone calls and three library conferences (the Young Adult Library Services Association Symposium, the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting, and the Maryland/Delaware Library Association Conference) in the United States. Phone calls; in-person interviews; focus groups at the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Symposium, the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting, and the Maryland/Delaware Library Association Conference. Subjects – A total of 92 youth-serving librarians and library staff in rural, urban, and suburban public libraries across the United States. Methods – Subjects were recruited via social media, partner librarians, the project website, an association e-newsletter, and printed materials. The researchers conducted 66 semi-structured interviews between December 2015 and May 2016 and 3 focus groups between November 2015 and May 2016. The transcripts of the interviews and focus groups were coded using a thematic analysis approach informed by a connected learning framework. Main Results – A total of 98% (65) of interview participants said they use technology in their youth programming; 69% (18) of focus group participants mentioned using technology in their youth programming. Many youth-serving librarians use technology in ways that align with connected learning. Youth-serving library workers are successful in finding community partners to help plan technology-enabled programming, they strive to develop connected learning programming based on the interests of their youth patrons, and they often take on the role of “media mentor” by exploring technology collaboratively with their patrons. Youth-serving library workers face several challenges in implementing connected learning. These include difficulties with openly networked infrastructures, struggling to create learning environments that align with the hanging out, messing around, and geeking out (HOMAGO) stages of connected learning, and lack of confidence and experience in mentoring youth patrons on how to use technology. Conclusion – The authors recommend that library administrators improve access to openly networked technology both within and outside the library, and loosen overly-restrictive social media policies to give youth-serving library workers more flexibility and control. They also recommend that library administrators implement more training for library staff in skills relating to connected learning. The authors are creating a professional development toolkit to help public youth library workers to incorporate digital media and connected learning into their work with young patrons.

Résumé :
Abstract. In February 2006, a disastrous rockslide-debris avalanche occurred in tropical mountain terrain, on Leyte Island, Central Philippines. Over 1100 people perished when the village of Guinsaugon was overwhelmed directly in the path of the landslide. The landslide was initiated by the failure of a 450 m high rock slope within the damage zone of the Philippine Fault where the rock mass consisted of sheared and brecciated volcanic, sedimentary and volcaniclastic rocks. Tectonic weakening of the failed rock mass had resulted from active strike-slip movements along the Philippine Fault which have been estimated by other workers at 2.5 cm/year. The landslide involved a total volume of 15 Mm3, including significant entrainment from its path, and ran out a horizontal distance of 3800 m over a vertical distance of 810 m, equivalent to a fahrböschung of 12°. Run-out distance was enhanced by friction reduction due to undrained loading when the debris encountered flooded paddy fields in the valley bottom at a path distance of 2600 m. A simulation of the event using the dynamic analysis model DAN indicated a mean velocity of 35 m/s and demonstrated the contribution of the paddy field effect to total run-out distance. There was no direct trigger for the landslide but the landslide did follow a period of very heavy rainfall with a lag time of four days. The rockslide-debris avalanche is one of several disastrous landslides to have occurred in the Philippines in the last twenty years. In terms of loss of life, the Guinsaugon event is the most devastating single-event landslide to have occurred worldwide since the Casita Volcano rock avalanche-debris flow which was triggered by Hurricane Mitch in Nicaragua in 1998.

Résumé :
The Teslin suture zone (TSZ) comprises a portion of the Yukon–Tanana terrane (YT), in the Yukon, formed by steeply dipping layering and L–S tectonite foliation. The TSZ forms the fundamental tectonic boundary between rocks deposited along the ancient margin of North America and allochthonous terranes to the west. TSZ tectonites evolved during initial penetrative dip-slip deformation (Dds) and later dextral strike-slip shear (Dss) along steep, 1–3 km wide shear zones. Several workers have speculated that the TSZ and related YT heterogeneous ductile deformation and associated metamorphism are Devonian to Mississippian in age and related to the intrusion of a similar-age orthogneiss throughout the Yukon and Alaska. However, recent structural and metamorphic studies of the TSZ provide evidence contradicting this view. New isotopic evidence, presented herein, indicates that TSZ dynamothermal metamorphism was cooled by Early Jurassic time, that it cannot be related to Devonian–Mississippian and Permian granitic intrusion, and that it predates Cretaceous plutonism.U–Pb zircon dating of peraluminous orthogneiss constrains primary peraluminous granite crystallization at 355 ± 25 Ma. Three Rb–Sr whole rock + muscovite and three K–Ar muscovite cooling dates of rocks containing Dds and Dss fabrics place a younger age limit of 182–213 Ma (latest Triassic to Early Jurassic) on Dds/Dss deformation. In addition, three Rb–Sr whole-rock + muscovite isochrons and one K–Ar date on biotite indicate peraluminous orthogneisses in the eastern portion of the study area were affected by a mid-Cretaceous thermal event. These data, togemer with structural and metamorphic relationships reported elsewhere, are summarized in pressure–temperature–time–displacement diagrams illustrating the evolution of TSZ and adjacent rocks from Devonian to Late Cretaceous time. Tectonites within the TSZ can be differentiated from peraluminous orthogneiss east of the d'Abbadie fault on the basis of their respective cooling histories.

Résumé :
This text contains an account of the first work on theoretical demography in Serbia, which was written in 1862 by Kosta Cukic, a doctor of philosophy from Heidelberg and the first widely recognised Serbian economist. He dealt with this topic in the second volume of his State Economy textbook, the title of which was Economic Policy. Writing about population problems in economic textbooks was a common European practice at that time. Although he wrote for a textbook, his work was not a retelling of generally accepted theories, but a critical discussion of issues that had not been resolved in contemporary science. Therefore, his work can be considered original in the full sense of the word. In the theoretical sense, Cukic relied on Malthus, but also provided significantly different perspectives on many issues. He accepted Malthus?s position that the amount of food is a limiting factor in population growth and that natural fertility is very high due to people?s strong sexual drive. But there were also important differences: in Cukic?s theoretical framework, the iron law of wages does not apply, i.e. wages do not always strive for the existential minimum, as Malthus argued. Cukic also argues that capital affects fertility, since it affects the amount of available resources. Cukic was not a pessimist like Malthus, and instead observed a significant population growth in Europe at the time, without mass famine and pestilence. As we can see, Cukic dealt a lot with Malthus and his theory. This is understandable considering that Malthus was the preeminent theoretician whose work focused on the population problem in those decades, and therefore determination according to his theory and discussion with him was inevitable for anyone who intended to write about population problems. Cukic also dealt with population policy and those aspects of it that were available to the governments of the time: immigration, emigration, and marriage. The basis of his views was strong and consistent liberalism in every respect. Cukic advocated for expanding personal freedoms, such as free decision-making about marriage, and free immigration to the country and emigration from it. In some places he would set minimum technical conditions. ?Personal freedom... is the ideal of the political consciousness of the present time?. Accordingly, he claimed that ?citizens are not just means for governmental purposes?, but on the contrary, it is the government?s duty to ?facilitate and support the aspirations of citizens to particular and general happiness?, thus repeating John Locke?s idea that the state exists for the sake of citizens, and not citizens for the sake of the state. Cukic belonged to a wide circle of authors in the mid-19th century who fundamentally rejected Malthus?s theory: on the one hand, economists who claimed that technological progress and a deepened division of labour would lead to economic progress that would forever postpone the existential crisis that Malthus feared; and on the other, demographers who believed that workers would control their fertility to preserve living standards to a greater extent than Malthus thought possible. Towards the end of the 19th century, the decline of fertility in Western countries provided strong evidence in favour of the latter.

Résumé :
The article explores the problem of memory and oblivion on the example of the tragic events of the 20th century associated with Auschwitz and the Gulag. The choice of this problem for analysis is due to its relevance by today, since in modern public life discussions about Stalin's repressions and the policy of Nazism haven’t lost their sharpness. Critical analysis and an unbiased assessment of these events today are faced with the phenomenon of “post-truth”, which generates a corresponding narrative, in which specific facts and analytical conclusions have less persuasive power than ready-made interpretations. The article discusses the question of how this issue fits into the global agenda as a whole, and whether it is particularly relevant for Russia due to its historical and cultural characteristics. Based on the works of modern philosophers, in particular, Valery Podoroga’s “Time after. Auschwitz and the Gulag: to think absolute evil”, an attempt is made to identify the main fractures of human subjectivity and the points of splitting of the individual. The destructive transformation of the human who has passed the test of a concentration camp manifests itself through the psychological state of the subject, the reflex work of the body, and as a result of bodily manipulations. However, Podoroga considers not exactly the survival in inhuman conditions, but continuation of life after the camp experience, as the main problem. If survival is a physiological overcoming; then life after survival is an existential struggle with the past so painfully experienced, which haunts and tries to constantly remind of itself. The evil of the past days has not been dissolved in the past, has not been fully comprehended either. The reasons for its origin have not been overcome and persist in the present. Until the tragic mistakes of the past are worked out, society will not find an incentive for moral development. The conducted research allows us to conclude that it is necessary to strive to recognize the Absolute Evil in various guises and prevent new humanitarian disasters, restoring memory and historical justice by realizing and experiencing guilt in one's own history, since memory is one of the main foundations of culture.

Résumé :
Those words reverberate in our minds as we remember how Dr. Nati Almazan, president of the Philippine Board of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery, bid Jake goodbye on many occasions, also being a member of the board. Dr. Jacob Sadang Matubis, a colleague, a brother in the Mu Sigma Phi fraternity, and a batchmate during our residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital from 1981 to 1984, was a friend to many of us. Jake, as we fondly called him, was a member of the UP Medicine Class of 1977, 2 years ahead of my batch, the Class of 1979. During our days at the UP College of Medicine, we joined the UP Medicine football team and competed with the other teams from the different colleges of the University of the Philippines. I played the left-out forward position, now called a striker and Jake was a half-back, now called a midfielder. During our time, we were champions on two occasions, boasting of players who played the game during high school in La Salle Greenhills and Ateneo, as well as having one burly American studying Medicine in UP at that time, playing the defender position. Being champions will always remain happy memories. Jake joined the Mu Sigma Phi fraternity in the summer of 1973. His baritone voice was his ticket to become a member of the Mu Sounds, a singing group of fraternity brothers, together with Dr. Alfee Pontejos, another brother and colleague. They performed in many venues and occasions especially during our fraternity anniversaries and college activities. I would say that Jake was one of the most determined to be an Otorhinolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeon, having applied to our department for 3 consecutive years. It didn’t mean that he was not good. It was just unfortunate that when our secretary at that time, Raquel, called their house regarding his application, his mom told her that Jake was going to try to make it in the United States. Upon learning this, Dr. Mariano Caparas, the chair of the department at the time --who was also a pillar of our society and a staunch nationalist— immediately removed Jake from the list of applicants. It took Jake three attempts to convince Dr. Caparas that he was not leaving for the US and that it was his intention to stay in the Philippines and continue to serve the Filipino people--his commitment ever since his UP Diliman days. It was January of 1981 when he started his residency. How Jake ended up as my batchmate during residency was like destiny. Being batchmates, we practically lived together day-in and day-out for 4 years learning surgeries, discussing our patients, spending long days, and sleeping in the call room even during off-duty days, effectively sealing our friendship forever. Back then, we were carefree and we talked a lot about our future. We were fond of playing poker during our downtime. Jake’s favorite game was called “Indian”. Each player would place a card on his forehead without seeing it. You would know the rank of the cards of the other players except yours. You would start giving a bet hoping that the rank of your card is higher compared to the rest. Imagine, if you were betting high while holding in front of your forehead the card 2 of clubs. Everyone would always enjoy laughing at you. You will then realize that you made a wrong bet. We also would always be on guard for Dr. Caparas’ footsteps coming up to our call room. We would immediately hide the cards, clear the table, and scramble to hold a book to make it appear as if we were studying. Dr. Gil Vicente (from one batch after ours), Dr. Jake Matubis, and I were the “barkada” During Residency, Aside from being good friends, we also worked well together. On our senior year in 1984, we won the first and the third prizes for the interesting case contest of the Philippine Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery with papers entitled “Tears from the Parotid” and “Ameloblastoma Arising from a Dentigerous Cyst”. Little did we know that we would also eventually become presidents of the Philippine Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery one after the other from 2008 to 2010. I would say that Jake was a mild-mannered, level-headed, and serious individual, although at times he would start cracking jokes. But the way he attempted to crack these jokes were the real reasons why we would also laugh. He appeared contented with what he had and where he was, especially when he started joining his Christian group. This was the path he took, occasionally addressed by us as “Pastor Jake”, and not hesitating to lead a prayer at the start of our meetings. He joined the Department of Anatomy after finishing residency and eventually became its chair. He became our eternal lecturer for the anatomy of the nose and paranasal sinuses in our yearly post-graduate course in Rhinology since 1992. With him gone, his replacement will have big shoes to fill. Today, people would probably describe Jake as a “chill” guy. He knew his place under the sun. His four children are lucky to have had him as their dad, especially since I have not ever seen him get angry. Thank you, Jake, for the friendship and for touching our lives. Your cool demeanor will always be remembered and emulated. Bye, Jake! See you again my friend, but hopefully not too soon.

Résumé :
The [Formula: see text] Léogâne fan delta in southwestern Haiti borders the epicentral region of the devastating magnitude 7.0 Haiti earthquake of 12 January 2010. The flat plain of the Léogâne area experienced some of the worst shaking, destruction of buildings, and loss of life caused by the Haiti earthquake. This intense shaking was attributed by previous workers to either activation of a blind (no surface expression) thrust fault some 4 km beneath the Léogâne fan delta or to strike-slip motion along a shallow, ground-breaking fault that ruptured the uppermost part of the fan delta. Our research team from the University of Houston and the Haiti Bureau of Mines and Energy collected shallow seismic and gravity data in the fan delta where previous studies of earthquake aftershocks, coastal uplift of coral reefs, and radar interferometry all indicated a maximum amount of coseismic uplift. Our objective was to acquire geophysical information on the subsurface stratigraphy, structure, and material properties of the fan. S-wave seismic studies revealed an average velocity of [Formula: see text] for the first 30 m. These velocity values suggest that the near-surface sediments at Léogâne are a seismically hazardous class D sediment type (National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program). Interpretation of our various seismic data sets has indicated prolonged sedimentary environments of fluvial channeling and channel migration to a depth of approximately 350 m as expected in this fan delta setting. There was no clear evidence on our seismic reflection lines for substantial faulting in the seismically slow, shallow fan delta sediments. Integrated geophysical data analyses indicated south-dipping seismically slow layers on the southern end of the Léogâne fan with a less well defined northward dip with the broad, anticlinal axis aligned with the area of maximum coseismic uplift at the coast. The sudden, coseismic upheaval of the ground surface above the proposed blind thrust combined with extreme shaking of the seismically weak sediments contributed to the destructiveness of the earthquake on the Léogâne fan delta.

Abstract A growing body of literature urges policymakers, practitioners and scientists to consider gender in the design and evaluation of health interventions. We report findings from formative research to develop and refine an mHealth maternal nutrition intervention in Nouna, Burkina Faso, one of the world’s most resource-poor settings. Gender was not an initial research focus, but emerged as highly salient during data collection, and thus guided lines of inquiry as the study progressed. We collected data in two stages, first using focus group discussions (FGD; n = 8) and later using FGDs (n = 2), interviews (n = 30) and observations of intervention delivery (n = 30). Respondents included pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and Close-to-Community (CTC) providers, who execute preventative and curative tasks at the community level. We applied Morgan et al.’s gender framework to examine intervention content (what a gender-sensitive nutrition programme should entail) and delivery (how a gender-sensitive programme should be administered). Mothers emphasized that although they are often the focus of nutrition interventions, they are not empowered to make nutrition-based decisions that incur costs. They do, however, wield some control over nutrition-related tasks such as farming and cooking. Mothers described how difficult it is to consider only one’s own children during meal preparation (which is communal), and all respondents described how nutrition-related requests can spark marital strife. Many respondents agreed that involving men in nutrition interventions is vital, despite men’s perceived disinterest. CTC providers and others described how social norms and gender roles underpin perceptions of CTC providers and dictate with whom they can speak within homes. Mothers often prefer female CTC providers, but these health workers require spousal permission to work and need to balance professional and domestic demands. We recommend involving male partners in maternal nutrition interventions and engaging and supporting a broader cadre of female CTC providers in Burkina Faso.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the prominence of mechanical excitations at the time of welding. In the past years, the process of welding technology has expanded its influence in manufacturing. The crucial drawback of conventional welding is prompted by internal stresses and distortions, which is the focal reason for weld defects. These weld defects can be diminished by the process called post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), which consumes more working hours and needs skilled workers. To replace these PWHT processes, mechanical vibrations are introduced during the process of welding to diminish these weld defects. Design/methodology/approach In the current research, the mechanical vibrations are transferred to weld-pool through vibro-motor and DC motor connected to the electrode. As per standards, the tensile test specimens were prepared for welding with different voltages of vibro-motor and DC motor respectively. The weld joints were tested for tensile strength and analyzed the microstructure at the fusion zone. Findings Melt-ability at fusion zone of 1018 mild steel was investigated by the single-stroke intense heat process of fusion welding. It is observed that the mechanical vibrations technique has a profound influence on the enhancement of the fusion zone characteristics and grain structure. The peak value of the tensile strength is observed at 100 s of vibration, 190 V of vibro-motor voltage and 18 V of electrode voltage. The tensile strength of the welded joints with vibrations is increased up to 22.64% when it is compared with conventional welding. The enhancement of the tensile strength of the weld bead was obtained because of the formation of fine grain structure. So, mechanical vibrations are identified as the most convenient method for improving the mild steel alloys weld quality. Originality/value A novel approach called mechanical vibrations during the process of welding is implemented for fusion zone refinement.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTAlthough acknowledged to be a simplification, the rate of sediment supply is usually assumed to be constant in sequence stratigraphic interpretations of clastic shelf systems. The simplified assumption taken in this work is that sediment supply can be represented by sine curves linked to climate changes driven by Milankovitch cycles. Three orders of sediment supply sine curves (amplitude and frequency scaled to order) are convolved with three orders of Milankovitch-forced eustatic sea-level sine curves and a constant rate of subsidence to generate curves for the ratio of rate of accommodation development to rate of sediment supply (δ A /δ S ). The relative-sea-level curve is then held constant whilst sediment supply is systematically changed from being constant to being cyclical across the three orders of Milankovitch frequencies and being in-phase, and out-of-phase with the eustatic cycles by 90°, 180°, and 270°. For each scenario, stratal architecture is then represented for sixty consecutive parasequences (fifth-order, regressive–transgressive shelf transit cycles) by converting the δ A /δ S curves into pseudo thickness / sandstone fraction plots (TSF plots). Constant sediment supply, in-phase sediment supply, and 180°-out-of-phase sediment supply produce symmetrical stratal geometries with equal periods of progradation, aggradation, and retrogradation. When sediment-supply cycles are 90°-out-of-phase (supply peak occurs later than sea-level peak), stratal geometries are asymmetrical with progradational architectures being dominant. When sediment-supply cycles are 270°-out-of-phase (supply peak occurs earlier than sea-level peak), stratal geometries are also asymmetrical but retrogradational architectures are dominant. These patterns are reproduced at all three orders of stratigraphic hierarchy (parasequence, sequence, and composite sequence). Comparison of these synthetic stratal geometries to real-world stratal geometries from Triassic to Neogene rocks across both the fifth-order (parasequence) and fourth-order (sequence) of stratal hierarchies suggests a consistently occurring asymmetrical, progradation-dominant motif. This indicates that 90°-out-of-phase sediment supply (supply peak occurs later than sea-level peak) may be a common occurrence through geological time. The work also corroborates the findings of earlier workers and suggests that sequence stratigraphic surfaces can change nature along depositional strike due to out-of-phase sediment supply and can thus also be diachronous. This work conceptually illustrates that Milankovitch climate-change-induced sinusoidal-sediment-supply cycles, out-of-phase with sinusoidal eustatic-sea-level cycles, may produce commonly observed asymmetrical stratal architectures and should be considered when invoking causal mechanisms for stratal architectures on clastic shelves.

Résumé :
Objective: To review a decade's experience of a Centers for Disease Control and Preparedness (CDC) funded Center for Public Health Preparedness (hereafter referred to as the Center) and to identify interventions that led to surmounting serious obstacles to achieving the Center's CDC-mandated goals and objectives. The Center's purpose was to train the public health workforce to protect the population from bioterrorism, infectious diseases, and emerging public health threats. Design: This case study used the concepts of the judgment process as developed by Noel Tichy and Warren Bennis to describe the experiences and actions of the Center's leaders. Center staff used public health principles of collaboration, the use of relevant science, and professional training principles in developing and delivering training in epidemiology, behavioral health, crisis leadership, and other fields through distance learning and on-site methods.Setting: The study's primary focus was on training in Florida, although the program's reach was national and international.Participants: Preparedness training was provided to approximately 10,000 public health officials, primarily drawn from Florida.Main outcome measure(s): This is a descriptive study of the Center's activities. The interventions were the steps taken by Center leadership to accomplish the federal and state goals of the program, despite meeting major challenges. The outcome measures were degrees of success, as measured by federal and state officials and other indicators, in delivering high quality training that met CDC and state goals. Results: The Center delivered trainings in fields determined to be needed in Florida and nationally. Participant and observer evaluations were strongly positive. Nationally published papers and presentations contributed to the training evidence base. The Florida Department of Health incorporated the trainings into Florida's mandatory training for Incident Command strike teams. The leaders of the Center and the Florida Department of Health developed a formal statement of principles to guide the training. These could be useful to other training organizations. Conclusions: The study illustrates the value of the Tichy and Bennis judgment process framework to describe actions of the Center leadership's successful effort to overcome system obstacles and provide high quality training to public health workers. The framework can be used by leaders in other organizations to increase their ability to make good judgments.

Résumé :
Context Health care providers, including athletic trainers (ATs), may not be using the best practices for diagnosing exertional heat stroke (EHS), including rectal thermometry. Therefore, patients continue to be susceptible to death from EHS. Objective To examine the health belief model and its association with using rectal thermometry as the best practice for diagnosing EHS. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Web-based survey. Patients or Other Participants A total of 208 secondary school ATs completed an online survey, and the data of 159 were included in the analysis. Main Outcome Measure(s) The survey contained 2 primary sections: AT characteristics and health belief model structured questions assessing perceptions and techniques used to diagnose EHS. Answers to the latter questions were rated on a 5-point Likert scale. We performed a binary logistic regression to ascertain the effects of the health belief model constants (eg, perceived susceptibility, barriers), age, sex, and the type of school at which the AT worked on the likelihood that participants would use best practice for diagnosing patients with EHS. Results Only 33.3% (n = 53) of the participating ATs reported they used best practice, including rectal thermometers to obtain core body temperature. The binary logistic regression was different for the 5 constructs: perceived susceptibility (\(\def\upalpha{\unicode[Times]{x3B1}}\)\(\def\upbeta{\unicode[Times]{x3B2}}\)\(\def\upgamma{\unicode[Times]{x3B3}}\)\(\def\updelta{\unicode[Times]{x3B4}}\)\(\def\upvarepsilon{\unicode[Times]{x3B5}}\)\(\def\upzeta{\unicode[Times]{x3B6}}\)\(\def\upeta{\unicode[Times]{x3B7}}\)\(\def\uptheta{\unicode[Times]{x3B8}}\)\(\def\upiota{\unicode[Times]{x3B9}}\)\(\def\upkappa{\unicode[Times]{x3BA}}\)\(\def\uplambda{\unicode[Times]{x3BB}}\)\(\def\upmu{\unicode[Times]{x3BC}}\)\(\def\upnu{\unicode[Times]{x3BD}}\)\(\def\upxi{\unicode[Times]{x3BE}}\)\(\def\upomicron{\unicode[Times]{x3BF}}\)\(\def\uppi{\unicode[Times]{x3C0}}\)\(\def\uprho{\unicode[Times]{x3C1}}\)\(\def\upsigma{\unicode[Times]{x3C3}}\)\(\def\uptau{\unicode[Times]{x3C4}}\)\(\def\upupsilon{\unicode[Times]{x3C5}}\)\(\def\upphi{\unicode[Times]{x3C6}}\)\(\def\upchi{\unicode[Times]{x3C7}}\)\(\def\uppsy{\unicode[Times]{x3C8}}\)\(\def\upomega{\unicode[Times]{x3C9}}\)\(\def\bialpha{\boldsymbol{\alpha}}\)\(\def\bibeta{\boldsymbol{\beta}}\)\(\def\bigamma{\boldsymbol{\gamma}}\)\(\def\bidelta{\boldsymbol{\delta}}\)\(\def\bivarepsilon{\boldsymbol{\varepsilon}}\)\(\def\bizeta{\boldsymbol{\zeta}}\)\(\def\bieta{\boldsymbol{\eta}}\)\(\def\bitheta{\boldsymbol{\theta}}\)\(\def\biiota{\boldsymbol{\iota}}\)\(\def\bikappa{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}\)\(\def\bilambda{\boldsymbol{\lambda}}\)\(\def\bimu{\boldsymbol{\mu}}\)\(\def\binu{\boldsymbol{\nu}}\)\(\def\bixi{\boldsymbol{\xi}}\)\(\def\biomicron{\boldsymbol{\micron}}\)\(\def\bipi{\boldsymbol{\pi}}\)\(\def\birho{\boldsymbol{\rho}}\)\(\def\bisigma{\boldsymbol{\sigma}}\)\(\def\bitau{\boldsymbol{\tau}}\)\(\def\biupsilon{\boldsymbol{\upsilon}}\)\(\def\biphi{\boldsymbol{\phi}}\)\(\def\bichi{\boldsymbol{\chi}}\)\(\def\bipsy{\boldsymbol{\psy}}\)\(\def\biomega{\boldsymbol{\omega}}\)\(\def\bupalpha{\bf{\alpha}}\)\(\def\bupbeta{\bf{\beta}}\)\(\def\bupgamma{\bf{\gamma}}\)\(\def\bupdelta{\bf{\delta}}\)\(\def\bupvarepsilon{\bf{\varepsilon}}\)\(\def\bupzeta{\bf{\zeta}}\)\(\def\bupeta{\bf{\eta}}\)\(\def\buptheta{\bf{\theta}}\)\(\def\bupiota{\bf{\iota}}\)\(\def\bupkappa{\bf{\kappa}}\)\(\def\buplambda{\bf{\lambda}}\)\(\def\bupmu{\bf{\mu}}\)\(\def\bupnu{\bf{\nu}}\)\(\def\bupxi{\bf{\xi}}\)\(\def\bupomicron{\bf{\micron}}\)\(\def\buppi{\bf{\pi}}\)\(\def\buprho{\bf{\rho}}\)\(\def\bupsigma{\bf{\sigma}}\)\(\def\buptau{\bf{\tau}}\)\(\def\bupupsilon{\bf{\upsilon}}\)\(\def\bupphi{\bf{\phi}}\)\(\def\bupchi{\bf{\chi}}\)\(\def\buppsy{\bf{\psy}}\)\(\def\bupomega{\bf{\omega}}\)\(\def\bGamma{\bf{\Gamma}}\)\(\def\bDelta{\bf{\Delta}}\)\(\def\bTheta{\bf{\Theta}}\)\(\def\bLambda{\bf{\Lambda}}\)\(\def\bXi{\bf{\Xi}}\)\(\def\bPi{\bf{\Pi}}\)\(\def\bSigma{\bf{\Sigma}}\)\(\def\bPhi{\bf{\Phi}}\)\(\def\bPsi{\bf{\Psi}}\)\(\def\bOmega{\bf{\Omega}}\)\(\chi _6^2\) = 22.30, P = .001), perceived benefits (\(\chi _6^2\) = 71.79, P < .001), perceived barriers (\(\chi _6^2\) = 111.22, P < .001), perceived severity (\(\chi _6^2\) = 56.27, P < .001), and self-efficacy (\(\chi _6^2\) = 64.84, P < .001). Analysis of these data showed that older ATs were at greater odds (P ≤ .02) of performing best practice. Conclusions These data suggested that the health belief model constructs were associated with the performance of best practice, including using rectal thermometry to diagnose EHS. Researchers should aim to create tailored interventions based on health behavior to improve the adoption of best practice.

Résumé :
Among the problems that are insufficiently studied in historical science remains the life of the Polish community inRight-Bank Ukraine in the 1890s – early 20th centuryin terms of its opposition to the imperial policy of demonopolization and Russification, the activities of youth opposition organizations, in particular the Polish student «Corporation», formed in Kyiv in the early 1890s, the main purpose of which was to fight against autocracy for the freedom of speech, assembly, to protect their rights and, as a final result, to prepare the fighters for the independence of Poland. The purpose of the article is to study the process of the formation of the illegal youth socio-political organization of Kyiv youth «Corporation», as well as its activities and transformations. To a large extent, this issue was dealt with in studies by B. Titlinov, A. Rafalskyi, V. Trohymovych, I. Shevchenko and others. The memoirs of the participants of the «Corporation»V.Verzheyskyi, S. Kosutskyiand of the olthersare also used. The basis for writing the article was the funds of the security organs of the Russian autocracy of the archive of the Central Information Agency of Ukraine in Kyiv (f. 274, etc.), the State Archives of the Russian Federation in Moscow (f. DP-OE). In the activities of the «Corporation»in 90sof the XIX century – atthe beginning of the XXcentury two stages can be distinguished: 1) 1890–1897, when Polish students took an active part in legal and conspiratorial associations, fraternities and societies were operating in Right-Bank Ukraine, and were structured in the revolutionary and national-patriotic movement; 2) 1898–1904 – aperiod when the members of the «Corporation» moved from propaganda to the practice of revolutionary action, participating in All-Russian student strikes, speeches of working enterprises, rallies and demonstrations of workers in the struggle for economic, social and political rights and freedoms. The article highlights the transformations that took place in the «Corporation» itself, as well as the participation of the Poles in other secret revolutionary societies and circles. Keywords: polish ethnic minority, student youth, «Corporation», opposition movement, autocracy

Résumé :
This paper describes the development of a Decision support system (DSS) for earthquake warning service in Vietnam using Web GIS technology. The system consists of two main components: (1) an on-line database of earthquakes recorded from the national seismic network of Vietnam, and (2) a set of tools for rapid seismic hazard assessment. Using an online earthquake database, the system allows creating a shake map caused by a newly recorded earthquake. In addition, the Web GIS environment allows any user, including non-professional to get useful information about a just-occurred event and the possible impact caused by the earthquake shortly after its occurrence. A fault-source model developed for Vietnam was used as a part of the hazard calculation and mapping procedure. All information and results obtained from the system are automatically included in the earthquake bulletins, which will be disseminated national wide afterward by the Vietnam earthquake information and tsunami warning Center. The shake maps produced by the DSS in terms of both Peak Ground Acceleration and intensity values are rapidly available via the Web and can be used for emergency response, public information, loss estimation, earthquake planning, and post-earthquake engineering and scientific analyses. Application of the online decision support system in earthquake warning service can mitigate the earthquake risk and reduce the losses and damages due to earthquakes in Vietnam in future.ReferencesBoore D.M., Joyner W.B. and Fumal T.E., 1994.
