The goal of this paper is to document how labour is divided and compensated (both monetarily and non-monetarily) in Canadian non-commercial scholarly journals. This study informs future research on sustainability in non-commercial academic publishing. As labour is essential for the continued success of these journals, understanding the extent (i.e., how many positions, how many hours per position), scope (i.e., which tasks are undertaken and who is responsible for them), and cost (monetary or non-monetary) of this labour will be critical in ensuring the sustainability of non-commercial academic journals in Canada. To investigate current practices, the authors distributed a survey to 484 Canadian journals meeting the above inclusion criteria. The survey was composed of two sections: how labour is divided at a journal (i.e., how many positions are there, what are the responsibilities of these positions, and how many work hours per week are dedicated to these positions) and compensation (i.e., does the journal provide monetary or non-monetary compensation to members of its editorial team, which positions receive compensation, and what is the source of these funds). The authors received 119 responses, for a 25 percent response rate. Among the main findings are that the majority of respondents compensate at least one journal position and that the source of these funds comes primarily from sponsoring organizations (i.e., affiliated institutional/university departments and scholarly associations). Additional findings include that the top three most commonly compensated positions are copyeditor, editorial assistant, and managing editor. Compensated positions such as translator, graphic designer, and copyeditor are often contracted out. Task distribution amongst editorial team members varies; however, editors-in-chief and managing editors are responsible for the greatest variety of tasks. Editorial assistants and managing editors tend to work more hours than other positions. Additionally, journal production was related to editorial team size, with larger teams producing more volumes on average than smaller ones. Recurring themes in free-text comments were large workloads, lack of compensation, and lack of recognition. This paper provides empirical evidence of the extent and variation of labour and compensation in Canadian non-commercial scholarly publishing. It provides data on current non-commercial journal practices which will be of interest to library publishers, journal editors, and other stakeholders in Canadian scholarly publishing.

Abstract
The publication of scientific work is an absolute thing that must be owned and produced by academics at this time. Moreover, when referring to the Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (PAN RB) Regulation No. 17 of 2013 and the Minister of Education and Culture Regulation No. 92 of 2004 which states that the increase in the academic level of lecturers requires publication of accredited national scientific journals and journals internationally reputable in their field. In addition to being very important for the performance of lecturers, the publication of scientific papers has become a government regulation through the Director General of Higher Education, which requires S1, S2 and S3 students to make a summary of scientific work published both online and in print as one of the graduation requirements. Seeing this, Raharja College has participated in providing publication media for scientific works, especially in online forms, one of which is iLearning Journal Center (iJC). Until now iLearning Journal Center has overseen 5 (five) journals in it with different scope of research. However, the problems that occur at this time are still a lack of the general public to know especially in the Higher Education environment regarding the iLearning Journal Center (iJC) as a publication media for online scientific work. In this study will be discussed about the steps or methods taken to maximize the use of iLearning Journal Center (iJC) as an online journal publication media to improve the quality and quantity of scientific works. This study uses SWOT analysis method and system design using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and the applications used in this study by applying the Open Journal System (OJS) which is known as management software and publishing online journals. The results of this study are a governance or management that can be done as a step to maximize the increase of publication of online scientific works for the academic community.

Thus, this is a history of the journal, a glimpse into the work of its editors, and a brief case study of organizational evolution.

Purpose: Following up an Research on Social Work Practice article published a decade ago, this study aimed to examine reference error rates among five, widely circulated social work journals. Methods: A stratified random sample of references was selected from the year 2013 ( N = 500, 100/journal). Each was verified against the original work to detect errors among author name(s), publication year, article title, journal title, volume number, and page numbers. Interrater consistency was 0.88. Results: In the sample, 163 (33%) references contained at least 1 error, producing 258 total errors. Author names held the highest error rate (0.26) and the volume number held the lowest (0.04). The highest error rate was found in Social Service Review (0.48), statistically significantly higher than the remaining journals. Discussion: Reference accuracy in social work journal articles has increased marginally. Substantial reference errors in articles among widely circulated journals may portray an aggregate lack of polished, scholarly writing/editing skills within the profession.

The OSH journals represented in this session are: JOH (Journal of Occupational Health, Japan), OEM (Occupational and Environmental Medicine, UK), SHAW (Safety and Health at Work, Korea), SJWEH (Scandinavian Journal of Work Environmental Health, Finland), AOED (Archives of Occupational and Environmental Diseases, France), and IJOMT (International Journal of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology). An examination of a random sample of four medical journals— The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association, and The Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine—reveals that one-fifth of the space of articles in medical science is devoted to an average of three tables and three flow charts, graphs, or photographs. Given these figures, the absence of discussion of visuals in the literature on medical communication may seem puzzling. But the puzzle is easily solved: our basic education gives us a coherent vocabulary for talking about prose, but no coherent vocabulary for talking about tables and visuals. Once we have this vocabulary in hand, we make another step in the direction of an explanation of the nature of communication in the medical sciences. We may note that understanding the meaning of a medical article is not just a consequence of understanding its texts; it is a consequence of understanding all its meaningful components working together—verbal, tabular, visual.

In a conversation with the executive editor of a reputable periodical, I noticed that the journal “Economic Consultant”, according to the financial model of Gold Open Access, publishes its articles in the open access, but at the same time charges the authors (or institutions) for publishing services. In response, I heard the editor exclaim: “If our journal becomes paid, I will leave my job!” The authors are also dissatisfied with the need to pay for the publication, I quote: “I don’t agree! I have never paid for my intellectual product, and I am not going to pay for it. I give it for free, and I consider the publication of my material as a fee for my work”. Indeed, some institutions have their own journals, the publication of which is free for employees. However, this is possible because the work of proofreaders, reviewers, and employees of the printing house is paid by the scientific or educational organization itself. Young commercial publishers that do not have sponsorship have to cover their costs through payments from authors. It should be noted that the absence of printed versions of journals does not in any way simplify publishing: electronic periodicals have additional expenses for maintaining the site, preparing data for uploading to bibliographic and information databases, etc. With that, it is necessary to understand that the reflection of the results of specialists’ research work in periodicals significantly increases the authority not only of the authors themselves but also of these publications. A number of commercial periodicals take a hybrid approach to publishing. For example, some publications do not charge authors who “do credit to the journal”. There are journals in which the authors act as free consultants, reviewers, thereby getting the opportunity to publish their own articles free of charge. The rector of one of the higher education institutions, after another open day, said: “We used to choose, and now they choose us”. Something similar is now observed in the publishing industry – there is a struggle between authors for publication in reputable periodicals, and young journals themselves have to fight for authors. The journal “Economic Consultant” adheres to the financial model of Gold Open Access, which provides for payment by the authors for the services of preparing an article for publication. Almost the entire amount received from the author is spent on translating Russian-language articles into English, the rest – on typesetting, that is, the author understands what he is paying for. No fee is charged for authors of English-language articles – in this case, we work according to the Platinum Open Access model since we do not charge either readers or authors. Publishing activities under the open access model are funded by institutions, societies, using grants. In the absence of financial support, the publisher is forced to work for free – for the future, for credibility.

Abstract: This article examines a series of pivotal moments in the history of the postwar French journal Critique , tracing the development, refinement, and reassertion of the journal's singular style of critical practice. We present the journal's founding documents and consider editor Georges Bataille's identification of Maurice Blanchot as the guiding model for the journal. Then we examine two defining texts in the review's development: Alexandre Kojève's "Hegel, Marx and Christianity" (1946) and Alain Badiou's "The (Re)commencement of Dialectical Materialism" (1967). Kojève's celebrated article crystallised the ideals of the journal's programme; Badiou's article meanwhile tested those ideals, precipitating a minor editorial crisis.

Cette thèse a pour but d’étudier l’écriture du journal chez Annie Ernaux à partir de sept textes diaristiques : Journal du dehors, « Je ne suis pas sortie de ma nuit », La Vie extérieure, Se perdre, le « photojournal » d’Écrire la vie, L’Atelier noir et Regarde les lumières mon amour. Ces journaux se différencient par leur forme et par leur fond : journal intime, journal externe, journal d’écriture et photojournal. Ils entretiennent également des liens avec les textes littéraires de leur auteur. Nous nous sommes intéressé tout d’abord à leur poétique, en partant du cadre théorique de la forme journalière pour analyser leur transcription du temps, leur structure fragmentaire et la figure de la diariste. Puis nous avons étudié le rôle triple joué par la pratique diaristique chez l’auteur : le besoin de conserver une trace du vécu et du fait social, l’aide psychologique au quotidien et la découverte de soi. En dernier lieu, nous avons analysé les résonances des journaux dans les différents textes de notre corpus, les liens les unissant aux extraits intimes parus dans des revues littéraires, de même que les rapports entre journaux et récits, tant par leurs thématiques que par leur conception et le recours à la photographie. Notre étude montre ainsi toute l’importance jouée par le journal dans la vie et le travail littéraire d’Annie Ernaux. La forme diaristique lui est en effet indispensable pour retracer son existence, garantir sa vérité et accompagner ses projets d’écritureThis thesis aims to study the diary writing of Annie Ernaux from seven diaristic texts: Journal du dehors, “Je ne suis pas sortie de ma nuit”, La Vie extérieure, Se perdre, “photojournal” in Écrire la vie, L’Atelier noir and Regarde les lumières mon amour. These diaries are differentiated by their forms and their contents: intimate diary, impersonal diary, literary diary, and photojournal. They also have links with the literary works of their author. We were interested first of all in their poetics, based on the theoretical framework of diary form in order to analyze their time transcription, their fragmentary structure and the diarist’s figure. Then we studied the triple role played by her diaristic practice: the need to keep a record of personal experience and social facts, the psychological assistance in daily life and the self-discovery. Finally, we analyzed the resonances in the texts of our corpus, their links with diary fragments published in literary journals, as well as the relationship between diaries and literary works, in their themes, their conception and the use of photography. Thus our study shows the diary’s importance in the life and the literary work of Annie Ernaux. The diaristic form is essential for her to trace her existence, guarantee her verity and accompany her writing projects

William Impey (1818-1896) came to South Africa as a Wesleyan Methodist Missionary in 1839. He held various missionary and colonial appointments until 1860 when he succeeded William Shaw as Chairman of the Albany and Kaffraria District and General Superintendent of Wesleyan Methodist Missions in South-East Africa. Impey's major contribution was in the provision of education for the indigenous peoples of this region, especially as President of Healdtown (1868-1878). This institution eventually became one of the most highly thought of mission education academies in South Africa. To date little has been known of the life and work of William Impey despite his senior position in South African Wesleyan Methodism. J Whiteside's History of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of South Africa, the last comprehensive history of South African Methodism, published in 1906, only devotes a few lines to Impey. He does however make further reference to Impey's work in his section on education. The Methodist Archive at Manchester University, which contains the personal records of all 19th century Wesleyan Methodist ministers, also has very little information about Impey. The reason for this relative lack of information is that he resigned from the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1878 on doctrinal grounds. Impey came under the influence of 19th century liberal theology and eventually drew the conclusion that he could no longer accept the doctrine of 'eternal punishment'. He believed that the only honest thing for him to do was to resign from the Wesleyan Methodist Church, which he believed required its ministers to adhere to this doctrine. He was accepted for ordination by the Anglican Church and served as a deacon in 1878 and then as a priest until his death in 1896. Impey's journal affords the reader an opportunity to have a glimpse into what life was like for a 19th century missionary living and working in South Africa. Perhaps its particular value lies in the many detailed entries Impey made about his personal spiritual experiences. The aim of this thesis is to place the life's work of William Impey in its historical and theological context in the belief that this will enable us better to understand the 19th century missionaries. It is hoped that this study will make a further contribution to our understanding of both 19th century missionaries and the times in which they lived and worked.

Cette thèse traite du processus de valorisation des quotidiens nationaux d’informations générales sur le double marché de la presse (lecteurs et annonceurs) en s’intéressant au rôle de l’activité d’édition dans la création de valeur. L’analyse de l’activité des « travailleurs de la presse » (rédacteurs, secrétaires de rédaction, direction des journaux, personnel des régies publicitaires, etc.) vise à décrire la production d’un bien hybride, à la fois informationnel et publicitaire, dont les caractéristiques finales résultent d’opérations de qualification et d’évaluation des contenus, et d’opérations rédactionnelles et techniques transformant des projets éditoriaux en produits édités. L’observation du travail éditorial et des usages des dispositifs d’édition dans les rédactions de presse quotidienne montre l’existence d’un processus de rationalisation de l’activité de conception et de fabrication du journal. Les directions cherchent à maîtriser ce processus pour accroître leur contrôle de l’édition et de la valorisation des quotidiens mais la rationalisation industrielle ne garantit pas la rentabilité des entreprises dans un marché des biens informationnels en mutation. Pour faire face aux incertitudes liées à la valorisation des journaux, les éditeurs agissent sur le positionnement éditorial des titres et sur le travail d’édition effectué par les rédactions, tout en engageant le développement de structures rédactionnelles « plurimédias ». L’activité d’édition des contenus est au cœur de la chaîne de valeur du journal, mais l’évolution des pratiques culturelles et la transformation du paysage médiatique engendrent une remise en cause des modèles économiques des entreprises de presse et bousculent les pratiques de travail dans les rédactions comme les représentations des métiers qui s’y exercentThis thesis deals with the process of valorization of national daily newspapers on the two-sided market of the press (readers and advertisers) and considers the role of the edition activity in the creation of value. The analysis of the activity of “press workers” (writers, editors, managers, commercials in advertising agencies) aims at describing the production of an hybrid good, both informational and advertising, of which final characteristics result from operations of qualification and valuation of contents, and from editorial and technical operations that transform editorial projects into edited products. The observation of editorial work and edition systems uses in daily press newsrooms shows a process of rationalization of the conception and production of newspapers. Editors want to master this process in order to reinforce their control of edition and valorization of newspapers, but industrial rationalization does not guarantee firms profitability in a changing market of informational goods. To face uncertainty of newspapers valorization, editors take action on the editorial position of papers and on the work of edition done by editorial staff, and they engage the development of cross-media newsrooms. The activity of contents edition is at the heart of the value chain of newspaper, but the evolution of cultural practices and the transforming media landscape put in question business models of newspapers and challenge work practices as well as representations of occupations in newsrooms

In 1929, the Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory was established in Chicago–the first of its kind in the United States. The purpose was to engage in practical use of scientific methods in the detection of crime. In 1930, the institute published its own periodical called The American Journal of Police Science. Applying the theory of boundary-work, this essay analyses how the novelty institute argued its legitimacy as a scientific establishment through the expansion of Police Science as a collective field of knowledge. The boundaries of Police Science expanded through certain patterns: the need for, and success of, science in solving crimes; its connection to the Northwestern University, engaging in education and research; by relating contested fields of knowledge to established sciences; through technological artefacts; by language demarcating “pseudo-science” from “real science”; and as an activity based on structure. Through professionalization, higher education and official accreditation the expert became science-by-proxy representing his field of knowledge in the court of law. Exclusion of pseudo-scientists was imperative to maintain and establish epistemological and scientific authority. Influenced by the “Progressives”, Police Science included reforms such as basic education for police officers; the removal of illegal and unscientific, but institutionalised, practices such as “third-degree” to regain the public‟s trust. In the conflict between the old-school and the new generation, Sherlock Holmes became a symbol used by both sides to discredit the opponent.

AbstractFinding a suitable open access journal to publish scientific work is a complex task: Researchers have to navigate a constantly growing number of journals, institutional agreements with publishers, funders’ conditions and the risk of Predatory Publishers. To help with these challenges, we introduce a web-based journal recommendation system called B!SON. It is developed based on a systematic requirements analysis, built on open data, gives publisher-independent recommendations and works across domains. It suggests open access journals based on title, abstract and references provided by the user. The recommendation quality has been evaluated using a large test set of 10,000 articles. Development by two German scientific libraries ensures the longevity of the project.

AbstractAs an early career researcher, you will probably not be extensively involved in reviewing journal articles or research proposals, or editing scientific journals. However, reviewing, evaluating and editing are important aspects of research. As an early career researcher, especially after getting a doctoral degree, you may be invited by a journal to serve as a peer reviewer, or may edit or work in a scientific peer review journal. It is important that you understand what to expect from a responsible review of your work – when you submit a manuscript to a journal or a grant proposal. In this chapter, we will look at different types of journal peer review. We will address the responsibilities of peer reviewers toward the authors and editor, including confidentiality, objectivity, and competing interests. We will focus on journal peer review, because this is something that you will certainly experience from the author’s side, and possibly as a reviewer. The principles of professional and responsible peer review also apply to other types of peer review, such as for grants of academic/research advancement.

AbstractCancer research is needed in the Arab world to provide evidence to healthcare workers and health policy makers. This chapter examines the literature on cancer research productivity in the Arab world, and the output of the 22 countries with respect to the number of publications, main types of cancers studied and top journals that researchers aim to publish their findings in. Although the Arab region is lagging in its cancer research output, it is reassuring that productivity has been on the rise in the last decade. There are great variations between countries in their contribution to cancer research, with Egypt and Saudi Arabia contributing the most and sub-Saharan Arab countries the least. Breast cancer is the most researched cancer in the Arab countries, overshadowing other leading cancers. The top journals that researchers published their work in are the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention, Pan African Medical Journal, Saudi Medical Journal, Tunisie Medicale, the Gulf Journal of Oncology and the Journal of the Egyptian National Cancer Institute. The last two occupied the fifth rank equally. All these journals are Q3 journals except for the first, which is a Q2 journal. The challenges and barriers facing researchers in the Arab world should be examined and sources of cancer research funding expanded. Collaborations with researchers in international academic institutions should be encouraged to improve the quantity and quality of cancer research.

The problem of import substitution in the spring of 2022 affected many areas of activity in Russia, including assessments of the effectiveness of scientific activities. A national system for evaluating the effectiveness of scientific research and development is being created using the database of leading Russian journals Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI). The article presents some results of the analysis of the RSCI normalized rating published in December 2022. The work was performed using the journal citation graph constructed from the data Math-Net.Ru. Using the example of thematic group OECD 101.Mathematics shows that in the presence of a large number of selfcitations of journals, a relationship is found between the normalized rating and the number of references, and the relationship with self-citation is somewhat stronger than without self-citation. Analysis of the distribution of journals by thematic groups shows that using a single attribute, such as the OECD, as a criterion does not allow forming a group as a community of journals with a single strongly connected component in the citation graph. It is concluded that the research methods of journal citation graphs are a good basis for a comparative analysis of the characteristics of journals and their ranking, which means they can be used as tools for further development and improvement of journal ratings.

This work is concerned with the effect on the film pressure distribution caused on a hydrodynamic tilting pad bearing, by the change in surface properties of the journal. Here two identical journals, both manufactured with AISI 9840, were employed. One of them was coated with DLC by the triboadhesion process, and the second, was used as a reference without applying any coating. During tests, the tilting pad experienced a lower film pressure distribution when the journal coated with DLC was employed. This phenomena could readily be attributed to the different surface energies of the coated and uncoated journals, which in time causes that the fluid film characteristics to be modified by the reduction of the shear stresses at the wall, thus reducing the maximum film pressure measured and shifting the maximum pressure to the line of symmetry, drawn from the center of the journal to the pin of rotation of the tilting pad.

A journal bearing system, if journal is disturbed from its equilibrium position, experiences change in the hydrodynamic forces acting on it. This disturbs the equilibrium of the journal and makes its center to whirl around the static equilibrium position. The dynamic response of a journal bearing system under these conditions can be obtained using either linear or non-linear equation of journal motion. The present work is aimed to determine realistic dynamic response of hole-entry hybrid journal bearing system compensated with constant flow valve restrictor. In this paper, the nonlinearized dynamic response of the journal bearing system is studied by considering two cases of journal mass (MJ) with respect to critical mass (Mlc obtained from linear analysis. i.e MJ = Mlc and MJ > Mlc. The deviation in stability margins is established by comparing the results obtained from the linearized and nonlinearized stability analysis for each case namely, isothermal, elastohyrdostatic, thermohydroststic and thermoelastohydrostatic. The coupled solution of Reynold’s, energy, conduction and elasticity equations is obtained using finite element method and the equation of motion is computed using fourth order Runga-Kutta method. The results obtained in the present work for nonlinear dynamic analysis of a constant flow valve compensated hole-entry hybrid journal bearing shows a increase in stability margin as compared to linear analysis for a case when isothermal conditions are assumed and bearing is considered rigid. When variation of viscosity with temperature is considered i.e. THS case, the stability margin is found to be about 20% higher than that estimated by linear analysis.

Repairing marine diesel engine crankshafts is a significant part of overall engine repairs and thus is very important for the ship building and ship repair industry. When a ship’s diesel engine is repaired, crankshaft journal surfaces must be renewed according to very precise geometrical and surface roughness requirements. Although current technologies are sufficient to meet these requirements, they are very time consuming and consequently expensive. A comprehensive research into the surface machining of marine diesel engine crankshaft journals allowed to improve technological processes and to identify respective surface roughness parameters, as well as to provide appropriate technological recommendations. It is important to note that crankshaft journal surfaces must be seen as 3D objects, whose micro-topographical surface roughness parameters have to be defined so that they reflect the actual surface. To summarize all available scientific research in this field, we can state that there has been no analysis into the impact of technological regimes on the surface micro-topography of marine engine crankshaft journals. Bearing in mind the aforementioned arguments a study has been launched to develop a novel grinding technology, enabling diesel engine crankshafts with medium-sized crankpin journals to be repaired directly inside the engine housing. This paper covers the following issues: 1) Description of the novel technological equipment for crankshaft journal grinding; 2) 3D roughness model of the crankshaft journal surface; 3) calculation of 3D parameters based on practical metrological and technological characteristics. This technology saves significant financial resources as well as reduces engine repair time. By solving problems related to surface accuracy, it is possible to considerably improve the crankshaft machining process, along with the performance of maintenance operations and consequently the overall quality of repair work. In this paper, the crankshaft journal surfaces will be defined using 3D surface roughness parameters.

Predict citation studies hold significant importance for editors and often involve analyzing various factors to forecast the future impact or number of citations a particular paper might receive. In this work, we study the prediction of citations for two business journals indexed in Scopus and WoS using four predictors: citations, peer-review process, bibliographic information, and study characteristics. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and negative binomial regression. Results revealed significant differences between the two open-access business journals, highlighting that there is no unique model, even within databases. The four variables have different predictive importance.

The paper emphasizes the need and challenges to synchronize multi time-domain and multi physical-phenomena data acquisition systems. On the way from a raw data sensor system to an independent decision-making edge device, there are still some challenges to be solved along the way. Identifying and combining technologies from foreign domains is the focus of the journey. Open and standardized communication protocols like OPC UA or MQTT are already wellestablished technologies with a high level of security. These communication protocols allow users to discover and receive structured data from compatible sensors and edge devices in the network. Moving the data processing and decision-making further to edge leads to reduced data transfer volume, lower latencies and improved privacy, security, and cost-effectiveness. This requires an extensible platform to embed custom feature extraction algorithms and to deploy trained machine learning models. ONNX, the open standard for machine learning interoperability, is a further puzzle piece on this journey. The paper shows the status of work, ongoing developments in the open standard community like OpenAE and platform strategies for advanced analytics and AI.

This work presents the novel design of a smart hydrodynamic journal bearing with adjustable radial clearance. The dynamic behavior of this bearing was mathematically modeled and examined. Finite Element Analyses were conducted to determine the effort needed to change and maintain a desired value for the radial clearance. First, the bearing set was modelled as a two-degrees-of-freedom dynamic system. For an initial value of a radial clearance of c = 0.0508 mm, the bearing set exhibited an unstable behavior under its postulated operating condition. A Generic Algorithm (GA) was used to define an objective function so that an optimum value of c could be determined in order to ring the bearing into a stable operating condition. The GA determined the value of radial clearance of c = 0.0051 mm for this purpose. Second, a Jeffcott rotor was modeled as an eight-degrees-of-freedom vibratory stem supported by two identical smart bearings. For an initial value of c = 0.025 mm, the disk’s peak-to-peak vibrations amplitude was determined to be 8 × 10−5 meter and 8.5 × 10−5 m along two orthogonal axes of a reference frame respectively. The GA was used to determine a new value for the radial clearance of the supporting bearings in order to reduce the disk’s vibration level. A new value of radial clearance c was determined to be 0.095 mm which in turn reduced the vibrations of the dick from 8 × 10−5 and 8.5 × 10−5 meter to 3.5 × 10−5 and 2.5 × 10−5 m respectively.

Female-coded family work keeps women away from late working life – but it makes a difference where in Europe they live because Nordic countries do not recognize this divide. Key Findings Childcare impacts upon late working life – women tend to be employed part time or outside paid labor if they engaged in childcare during earlier life stages; men with children are more likely to be in full-time employment. Women are more affected by early working life decisions – previous labor-market participation or a reduction in working hours due to childcare obligations have a greater impact on late working life. A North–South divide in Europe – it is mostly in southern and western Europe that women’s domestic work or part-time employment prevents full-time employment in late working life, but in northern Europe, female employment in late working life is barely affected by previous family obligations. Contrary to a widespread belief that open access publications are paid by their authors, a significant amount of scientific articles are published with no fees to both readers and authors (or “Diamond” model). In 2021, it is estimated that between 17,000 and 29,000 scientific journals rely on a Diamond model. 73% of the journals registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals charge no fee. The Diamond model is attested on a world wide scale. It is especially prevalent in Latin America (95% of journals) following the emergence of large publicly-supported platforms, such as SciELO and Redalyc and to a lesser extent in Eastern Europe and South-East Asian countries like Indonesia. Diamond journals are frequently embedded in local communities of researchers, non-academic professionals and private citizens: they play an important role in the circulation of knowledge and in the preservation of linguistic diversity in science. Diamond journals are an efficient economic model. The median cost per article is estimated at $200, or 1/6th of the expenses of commercial journals. Most of their funding is covered by a variety of non-commercial support: recurrent funding, grants, technical support, volunteer work. Diamond journals are also less productive than commercial journals. They represent a lower output of academic articles overall, making up less than half of all publications indexed by the Directory of Open Access Journals. While the concept of “diamond journal” was only introduced in 2011, community-owned scientific journals have a long history. A variety of common-based structures from subsidized university publishers to volunteer-run cooperatives have existed for decades and been revived by the development of open science in the late 1990s. Reliance on communities is one of the main strengths of Diamond journals. Although they are measurably a major model of open science publishing, diamond journals have long been little acknowledged by academic policies and funders. Leading indexes like the Web of Science or Scopus tend to favor commercial publications. Archiving has been identified as a major concern, as several publications can remain unnoticed from the main preservation initiatives. In 2022, new national and international policies, such as the UNESCO recommendation on open science, or the action plan for diamond Open Access supported by cOAlition S aims to support the development of Diamond journal. Diamond journals are increasingly part of an emerging ecosystem of “scientific commons” alongside open science infrastructures, free academic software, open data programs or open metrics.

The Child Labour: Action-Research-Innovation in South and South-Eastern Asia (CLARISSA) programme uses Action Research (AR) to understand the dynamics which drive the worst forms of child labour (WFCL), and to generate participatory innovations which help to shift these underlying dynamics and mitigate their worst effects. Through 13 Action Research Groups (ARGs) in Bangladesh and 12 groups in Nepal, the programme is generating a rich understanding – particularly through children’s lived experiences – of the complex underlying drivers of harmful work and working children and their employers are themselves defining, piloting and evaluating their own innovative actions that aim to increase children’s options to avoid WFCL. This group worked on the theme 'Journey to work'.

As part of CLARISSA’s qualitative, thematic research agenda, Geographic Information System (GIS) journey mapping and ethnographic observation was conducted to gain insights into the daily lives, experiences, journeys, and feelings of children involved in the Adult Entertainment Sector (AES). Twenty children documented their daily activities using a mobile app, with support and accompaniment from CLARISSA researchers. Subsequently, a collaborative analysis was conducted with participants and the CLARISSA research team, culminating in the formation of a number of GIS-based Action Research Groups to work on predominant issues or themes. This process generated evidence that is often deeply veiled and difficult to uncover. The formation of this ARG was prompted by recurring issues around children’s journeys to work that emerged through the research. The group was focused on the theme, ‘The journey to work and back’.

The Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS) is a landmark study for our nation. The ACMS research team has generated the first nationally representative data on the prevalence of each of the five types of child maltreatment in Australia, and their associated health impacts through life. We also identified information about the context of maltreatment experiences, including how old children are when it occurs, and who inflicts it. This knowledge about which children are most at risk of which types of abuse and neglect, at which ages, and by whom, is needed to develop evidencebased population approaches required to reduce child maltreatment in Australia. The concerning prevalence of maltreatment and its devastating associated outcomes present an urgent imperative for nation-building reform to better protect Australian children and reduce associated costs to individuals, families, communities and broader society. The ACMS collected data from 8500 randomly selected Australians aged 16-65 years and older. We included an oversample of 3500 young people 16-24 years of aged to generate particularly strong data about child maltreatment in contemporary Australian society, to assess its associated impacts in adolescence and early adulthood, and to allow future prevalence studies to detect reductions in prevalence rates over time. Our participants aged 25 and over enabled us to understand prevalence trends at different times in Australian history, and to measure associated health outcomes through life. Participants provided information on childhood experiences of each of the five types of child abuse and neglect, and other childhood adversities, mental health disorders, health risk behaviours, health services utilisation, and more. Our findings provide the first nationally representative data on the prevalence of child maltreatment in Australia. Moreover, the ACMS is the first national study globally to examine maltreatment experiences and associated health and social outcomes of all five forms of child maltreatment. Taken together, our findings provide a deep understanding of the prevalence, context and impact of child abuse and neglect in Australia and make an important contribution to the international field. This brief report presents the main findings from the ACMS for a general public audience. These main findings are further detailed in seven peer-reviewed scholarly articles, published in a special edition of the Medical Journal of Australia, Australia’s leading medical journal. Forthcoming work will examine other important questions about the impacts of specific maltreatment experiences to generate additional evidence to inform governments and stakeholders about optimal prevention policy and practice. There is cause for hope. In recent years, there have been reductions in physical abuse, and in some types of sexual abuse. These reductions are extremely important. They mean that fewer children are suffering, and they indicate that change is possible. Policies and programs to reduce these types of maltreatment are having an effect. Yet, there are other concerning trends, with some types of maltreatment becoming even more common, including emotional abuse, some types of sexual abuse, and exposure to domestic violence. And new types of sexual victimisation are also emerging. As a society, we have much work to do. We know that child maltreatment can be reduced if we work together as governments, service sectors, and communities. We need to invest more, and invest better. It is a moral, social and economic imperative for Australian governments to develop a coordinated long-term plan for generational reform. We have found that: 1. Child maltreatment is widespread. 2. Girls experience particularly high rates of sexual abuse and emotional abuse. 3. Child maltreatment is a major problem affecting today’s Australian children and youth – it is not just something that happened in the past. 4. Child maltreatment is associated with severe mental health problems and behavioural harms, both in childhood and adulthood. 5. Child maltreatment is associated with severe health risk behaviours, both in childhood and adulthood. 6. Emotional abuse is particularly harmful, and is much more damaging than society has understood.

The article examines the publicistic texts of the journal «Suchasnist», which at various times of its existence developed the national idea, united Ukrainians, supported the patriotic spirit, oriented politically, informed about the events of cultural life, published new works of art by domestic writers, revealed to readers the names of those banned during the Soviet era talented representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora. The main problems of the journal in the last years of its operation have been clarified. The issue of the negative impact of the entire Russian and Soviet heritage on the development of Ukraine, the unreliability of many historical facts and their manipulation, the peculiarities of Ukrainian democracy, the strengthening of the influence of the oligarchy, the inertia of civil society, and the decline of national culture is considered. The place of keywords in the context of journal publications, which are characterized by frequency of use and additional associative subtext, is determined. Key words: Ukraine, independence, civil society, nationalism, Ukrainian elite, power, revolution.
